AEW Women’s Champion Hikaru Shida vs. NWA Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa is now official for AEW All Out.
Last Saturday, Rosa made a surprise appearance on Dynamite and challenged Shida to a title match at the company’s September pay-per-view. On Thursday’s Dynamite in a video package, Shida accepted and the contract was signed. The match is not title vs. title and is for just Shida’s belt.
Rosa has been champion since January but with the NWA in a hiatus due to the pandemic, Tony Khan approached Billy Corgan about Rosa’s availability and a deal was worked out. Corgan and footage of Rosa in the NWA were part of the video package Thursday.
Shida has been champion since May 23rd when she defeated Nyla Rose at Double or Nothing to win the title.

The field for the 21-man Casino Battle Royale at All Out began to take shape as several participants were announced or announced their intention to be in the match.
Darby Allin, Lance Archer, Brian Cage, Ricky Starks. Eddie Kingston, The Butcher, The Blade, Pentagon Jr. and Fenix will all be involved, leaving twelve participants left to go. The winner earns an AEW World title shot.

Following their brawl Thursday, an eight man tag team match was announced for the show featuring Dark Order (TNT Champion Mr. Brodie Lee, Colt Cabana, Evil Uno and Stu Grayson) vs. The Natural Nightmares (Dustin Rhodes and QT Marshall), Scorpio Sky and Matt Cardona.
Three months after making their promotional debut, FTR are less than two weeks away from their first opportunity at the AEW Tag Team Titles.
On Thursday’s Dynamite, FTR won a four team tag team gauntlet, last defeating Best Friends to earn a tag team title shot at All Out against champions Kenny Omega and Hangman Page.
The Young Bucks started the gauntlet by defeating The Natural Nightmares and then were defeated by Best Friends when Page came out and held Nick Jackson’s leg, preventing a Meltzer Driver and leading to Trent rolling up Matt Jackson for the win.
FTR then defeated Best Friends when Dax Harwood submitted Chuck Taylor to earn the tag title shot. Taylor had hurt his knee against the Bucks which was part of the story of the finish.
Omega and Page have held the titles since January 21st when they defeated SCU on the Jericho Cruise edition of Dynamite to become the second-ever AEW Tag Team Champions.
All Out is scheduled for Saturday, September 5th at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida, headlined by AEW World Champion Jon Moxley vs. MJF.
Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone and Chris Jericho were the broadcast team.

FTR won a number one contender’s tag team gauntlet
The Young Bucks defeated Natural Nightmares
Natural Nightmares and the Bucks did a short back and forth match to start the gauntlet.
Dustin hit a destroyer and powerslams on both Bucks. QT tried a QT Special on the Bucks but missed and got cut off.
Marshall tried a cutter but got shoved into a high kick from Nick. The Bucks hit tandem superkicks and a BTE Trigger for the win.
**********
Best Friends defeated The Young Bucks
The key to this was Hangman Page turning on The Young Bucks.
These guys had an excellent match, the best of the three in the gauntlet. Both teams hit signature spots. Trent took a German on the apron. Best Friends hit their sole food/half and half suplex combo.
Chuck sold his knee after kicks from Nick. Nick hit a springboard facebuster on Chuck. Trent hit Nick with a spear on the floor. Best Friends got the heat on Nick which is a change of pattern from the typical Bucks match where Matt sells most of the way.
Matt got a hot tag and hit his rolling northern lights suplexes on Trent. Nick tagged back in for some strikes and got cut off again. Best Friends tried Strong Zero but Matt saved for Nick before they could hit it.
Nick hit a 450 to Trent as he was draped in the ropes and Matt covered for a two count.
The Bucks went for a Meltzer Driver. Hangman Page came out of nowhere and grabbed Nick’s ankles, holding him on the apron. Trent then sat down into a cradle and pinned Matt.
Page walked off and acted very solemnly.
**********
FTR (w/Tully Blanchard) defeated Best Friends
FTR attacked Best Friends before the bell and worked them over through a commercial break.
Chuck got a couple of hope spots and cradled Dax for a near fall. Cash hit a suplex on Trent on the floor and essentially turned it into a handicap match.
Chuck sold damage from his first match and having his legs posted here by FTR.
Dax used an inverted figure four/kneebar with an ankle lock and Chuck tapped out.
**********
A Darby Allin hype video aired. He wore a Rciky Starks mask and jumped off a suspension bridge into a body of water. He’s nuts.
Allin and Lance Archer were announced for a 21-man Casino Battle Royale at All Out with the winner getting a future AEW title match.
**********
Lance Archer (w/Jake Roberts) defeated Sean Maluta
The announcers said that Maluta was Afa’s nephew.
Archer won a squash with a pounce, suplex, chokeslam, Blackout and EBD Claw.
**********
Roberts and Archer did a promo after a commercial break. Roberts said they only have one blemish on their record and it’s cost them a lot. Roberts interviewed Archer who said he’ll win the battle royale.
Taz, Ricky Starks and Brian Cage came to the ring and confronted Roberts and Archer. Roberts called Team Taz “Flinstones.” Taz was trying to get his promo out but Roberts kept cutting him off.
Allin then skated in and attacked Starks, knocking Starks out of his shoes. That was great.
Cage and Archer faced off to end the segment, so they’re teasing a big monster battle there.
**********
A nice video package played for the AEW Women’s World Championship match at All Out.
Billy Corgan did voiceovers for the video and put over how great it is that AEW and NWA are working together.
Schiavone and Corgan put Thunder Rosa over as a big star and talented wrestler. JR said that Shida was put on earth to be a pro wrestler.
They signed the contract for the match and Shida promised to win.
**********
Moxley/MJF contract signing
MJF entered with his lawyer, Mark Sterling and his campaign entourage. Moxley entered to a nice ovation. The crowd sounded louder at the opening of the show, though.
MJF said he was a pro wrestling prodigy who grew up studying guys like Ernie Ladd and Buddy Rogers while Moxley was watching Sandman, Onita and John Zandig. MJF said maybe Mox’s “hot little wife” should call him since he’s single.
Moxley said he wants to use the Paradigm Shift, he wants to hurt MJF and cause him permanent neck damage, but by banning the move MJF has just forced him to find more creative ways to hurt him.
Moxley signed the contract. The big swerve here was that Moxley added a stip to the contract where he gets to wrestle Sterling next week.
**********
A Santana and Ortiz hype video aired. They recapped their feud with Best Friends.
**********
The Butcher, The Blade, Pentagon Jr. & Rey Fenix (w/Eddie Kingston) defeated Joey Janela, Sonny Kiss, Brian Pillman Jr. & Griff Garrison
They sent Janela, Kiss, Pillman and Garrison out there to be tackling dummies for Kingston’s new stable. Janela and Pillman both took some spectacularly stupid bumps.
Pentagon and Fenix hit stereo dives. Pentagon hit Janela with a package piledriver on the apron. Pillman took a bump on his head off a lariat.
Fenix hit a springboard double stomp and pinned Pillman.
**********
Kingston cut a promo after the match and said he and his stable will be in the battle royale and one of them will win.
**********
Mr. Brodie Lee’s TNT Championship celebration
Dark Order came to the stage carrying a casket. They held a funeral for Cody and the Nightmare Family.
Mr. Brodie Lee entered. They did a less entertaining rehash of their comedy celebration from this week’s BTE before Lee cut a serious promo. He said the open challenge is over and no more TV time for indie geeks. He said Cody’s career is over.
Natural Nightmares ran in to attack. Dark Order beat them down. Scorpio Sky ran in. He got beat down.
Matt Cardona rumbled to the ring and cleaned house.
The first part of this segment was like bad WWE comedy. The second half set up a couple of challengers for Lee and accomplished what it needed to.
**********
Dasha Gonzalez caught up with Hangman at the backstage bar. The Young Bucks entered and confronted Hangman for costing them the match earlier.
Matt said all the Bucks ever wanted was for Hangman to be their friend. Nick said he called Hangman a jobber a long time ago but didn’t mean it, but said Hangman was a jobber tonight. Page didn’t react to any of this.
The Bucks officially kicked Page out of The Elite and stormed off.
Page stared into a broken mirror like a comic book villain at the point in his origin story where he turns evil.
**********
Big Swole defeated Britt Baker, Penelope Ford & Reba (w/Kip Sabian) in a handicap match
Baker cut a promo before the match that was very good and that’s where the highlights ended. I’m a big Penelope and Swole fan but this was a worst match of the year contender.
Baker said that if Swole wins she gets Baker in any kind of match she wants at All Out.
Baker stayed on the stage in her wheelchair and never tagged in.
Ford picked Swole up and almost dropped her on her head. Reba and Ford worked over Swole. Reba’s offense looked terrible.
Baker threw Reba a crutch. The ref took the crutch away. Sabian took the ref. Baker threw another crutch to Reba. Reba hit Ford with the crutch by mistake but actually missed her by a mile. Swole pinned Ford.
Why is Reba in the match if not to get pinned? She’s a makeup artist.
Worst match on American TV this year.
**********
Cody vs. MJF’s lawyer, Santana & Ortiz vs. Best Friends, Chris Jericho vs. Joey Janela, Private Party & SCU vs. Young Bucks & Jurassic Express in an 8-man where the winners face each other at All Out were announced for next week.
**********
Dark Order came to ringside to recruit Taya Conti. Conti accepted and hugged Anna Jay.
This was a strange time to do an angle.
**********
Natural Nightmares, Matt Cardona & Scorpio Sky vs. Brodie Lee, Stu Grayson, Evil Uno & Colt Cabana was announced for All Out.
**********
Sammy Guevara entered for the main event and did his cards gimmick during a commercial break.
Tables match: Sammy Guevara defeated Matt Hardy
Who times these shows out? They went to another commercial break almost immediately after the match began.
They busted each other open during a commercial break. Hardy missed an elbow off the apron and went through a table but it was not a finish as the AEW table match rules are you have to be put through a table by someone else’s offensive move.
Hardy set Guevara up on a table and teased a top rope legdrop. Guevara cut him off and hit a superplex through the table for the win.
These guys killed themselves for a 7 minute TV match where half of it took place during commercials.
**********
Jericho was putting over what a great episode this was when Orange Cassidy ran in and attacked him. They brawled as the show went off the air.
Brian Pillman Jr. will make his in-ring AEW Dynamite debut Thursday as part of an eight-man tag team match.
He will join regular Dark partner Griff Garrison, Joey Janela and Sonny Kiss to take on The Butcher & The Blade and the Lucha Bros in a match announced Thursday afternoon.
Since MLW has gone on hold due to the pandemic, Pillman Jr. has worked four matches on Dark since July, going 0-4.
Butcher, Blade and the Lucha Bros have been a regular four-man unit since July, going 3-1 with their lone loss coming at the hands of Jurassic Express and the Natural Nightmares. They will be accompanied by Eddie Kingston who aligned himself with the group in an in-ring promo after that loss.
The match joins a lineup that includes a tables match between Matt Hardy and Sammy Guevara; a tag team gauntlet match featuring The Natural Nightmares, Young Bucks, Best Friends, and FTR with the winners getting a AEW Tag Team title shot at All Out; Big Swole vs. Britt Baker, Rebel, and Penelope Ford in a handicap match; and a TNT title celebration by new champion Mr. Brodie Lee.
Tony Schiavone, Taz, and Veda Scott are on commentary for the second straight week. Taz was absolutely awful last week, so hopefully he is locked in tonight.
Tonight’s Dark will feature thirteen matches in total which is a record for the show.
Best Friends (w/Orange Cassidy) defeated Storm Thomas and Demetri Jackson
The Best Friends, currently feuding with Santana and Ortiz, are the no. 2 ranked tag team in AEW while this is the first time Thomas and Jackson have teamed together.
Chuck Taylor toyed with Thomas at the start before both tagged in their partners. Jackson attempted some kicks, but Trent regained the advantage with double knees and a draping suplex that Jackson barely rotated over for. After Taylor tagged back in, he taunted Thomas, but Jackson knocked him down to put his team on top.
Eventually, Trent fought back with a tornado DDT and a suicide dive. He hit a running knee on Jackson before tagging in Taylor for the hug. Trent hit a stuff piledriver followed by Taylor hitting the Awful Waffle for the win.
While short, this was surprisingly a back-and-forth match as the losers controlled around half the match. Also, I hate to keep bringing this up, but Taz was already completely grating one match in as he made no attempt to have any chemistry with Schiavone while Scott, who is potentially the best commentator of the bunch, could barely get a word in edgewise.
Spears has been winning matches of late with a Kevlar-loaded glove. he hit a quick armdrag at the bell before the two locked up while Taz and Schiavone are calling each other “heels” on commentary.
Sorensen fought back with an armdrag and dropkick which led to Spears regrouping with Blanchard outside. Spears hit strikes on Sorensen in the corner before landing a standing dropkick. He continued to lay in punches after tying Sorensen up in the ropes. Spears then took his opponent outside and attempted to stomp on his hand, but Sorensen escaped.
Back in the ring, Sorensen got some breathing room in with a jackknife cover and a neckbreaker. Sorensen set up for a tornado DDT, but Spears fought out and hit the death valley driver for the pin. The most notable thing about this match is that Spears didn’t need to win using his Kevlar insert.
Post-match, Blanchard discussed things with the referee as Spears inserted the Kevlar and knocked Sorensen out with a palm strike.
Mel defeated Red Velvet
There was a huge size disparity in this one as Mel is nearly a foot taller than Velvet. Velvet came out striking at the bell and immediately took Mel off her feet. After more kicks, Mel countered a rope run into a side slam. Mel threw Velvet across the ring by her hair and smashed her head into the canvas. Velvet escaped to the top rope, but Mel caught her with a chokeslam to complete the squash victory.
Lance Archer (w/Jake Roberts) defeated D3
Archer came out already having beaten up some guy who wasn’t in the match. He attacked D3 before the bell and implored him to hit back which just made Archer even more mad. Roberts was talking into a ringside camera for much of this match.
A sky-high chokeslam would have given Archer the victory, but he picked D3 up after two and started gouging at his nose and eyes. He placed D3 in the corner, but D3 actually fought back with an elbow and a kick before completely missing a moonsault. Archer decided his fun was over, hitting Blackout followed by the EBD Claw to end this destruction. I continue to love the many different ways that Archer comes up with to make his squashes interesting.
The Initiative were 0-10 heading into this one. Luther and Serpentico attacked at the bell and when the dust settled, Luther and Avalon were the legal competitors. Luther beat down Avalon before tagging in Serpentico, but Avalon escaped and tagged in Cutler. He and Serpentico performed some lucha as The Initiative maintained their advantage.
Cutler continued to land moves on Serpentico, but Luther stopped his offense. Luther and Serpentico hit some strange bedfellows tag moves before Serpentico kept the heat up with a chinlock. Cutler finally escaped to Avalon for the hot tag.
A sit-out powerbomb on Serpentico nearly got the win for the Initiative, but Luther once again stopped the offense. “I think Veda’s getting annoyed at you and I” was a direct quote from Taz on commentary at this point in the match.
Bates distracted the referee, allowing Avalon to fight back, but the referee stayed distracted too long for the count. Cutler hit a gutbuster followed by a splash from Avalon, but Luther broke it up. Bates gave Avalon her book, but Avalon inadvertently hit his partner. Luther and Serpentico hit a diving meteora/powerbomb combo to get the hard fought win.
This was the first real match on this week’s Dark and it was still just okay. Luther has a cool look, but isn’t a strong worker. Notably, The Initiative continue to work from underneath as babyfaces during the match before Bates gets involved, that is.
Nyla Rose (w/ Vickie Guerrero) defeated KiLynn King
Rose is AEW’s no.1 ranked female wrestler and the fact that she’s on Dark is a minor indictment of how limited their women’s division remains right now. Early on, Rose threw King outside the ring before wrapping her opponent around the ringpost.
Rose picked apart King before her opponent made a comeback, but Rose stopped it with a spinebuster. King attempted a few rollups and hit an impressive samoan drop on the much larger Rose for two. King went to the top rope, but Guerrero pushed her off and Rose hit the sit-out power bomb for the win.
This was bad from start to finish. The work was sloppy, and the fact that Rose, who is ostensibly this unstoppable monster, needed help from Guerrero to defeat somebody who has never won made no sense. Post-match, Guerrero cut a promo, saying that Rose “symbolizes fear and destruction” and named their alliance the “Vicious Vixens.”
Billy & Austin Gunn defeated Frank Stone & Baron Black
Billy and Austin have been mainstays on Dark over the summer while this is the first time Stone and Black teamed together. On commentary, Taz got angry at Schiavone for referring to wrestlers as “he” instead of by their names. The story is that Taz is still bitter with Billy from their WWF days.
The Gunns maintained an early advantage with quick tags and power moves before Stone finally cut Austin off with a tilt-a-whirl side slam. He and Black continued the cycle of tags and power moves. Gunn landed awkwardly on his shoulder on a belly-to-back where he seemed unsure whether he was supposed to rotate to his stomach.
Billy finally got the hot tag and ran wild with strikes. He missed the Fameasser, however, and got tripped up by Stone. Stone and Austin both tagged in and had a weak-looking striking battle before Austin hit the Quick Draw (what looks like a simple hip toss) for the win.
Penelope Ford (w/Kip Sabian) defeated Heather Monroe
Ford is AEW’s no. 3 ranked women’s wrestler, while this is Monroe’s Dark debut after facing Hikaru Shida a couple weeks ago on Dynamite. They got completely lost at the start as Monroe attempted some lucha style offense. Monroe maintained control as Sabian blasted her with leaf blowers from outside in a comedy spot. That distracted Monroe enough for Ford to take advantage with a gutbuster.
Ford and Sabian kissed while Ford was choking Monroe in the ropes. Monroe almost stole a victory with some cradles followed by a lung blower, but Ford fought back with a handspring, elbows, and a fisherman’s suplex bridge for three. Ford is a very solid talent, but Monroe struggled greatly here.
Santana & Ortiz defeated The Metro Brothers (Chris & JC)
The announcers discussed Santana & Ortiz’s ongoing feud with Best Friends. This was the Metro Brothers’ AEW debut and, I believe, the first time they have wrestled since the pandemic started. Ortiz started off while the announcers provided no name distinction between the two Metro Brothers.
Ortiz hit a powerslam and tagged in Santana for a lariat. Santana laid in kicks and a standing senton, followed by the Three Amigos suplexes. They allowed the beaten down Metro Brother to make a tag. The fresh competitor tried to run wild, but Ortiz immediately cut him off. Santana caught his opponent out of mid-air for a brutal powerbomb, and he and Ortiz hit the powerbomb knee lift combination for the easy squash win.
Post-match, Best Friends ran in and attacked. Taylor and Trent continued to run wild, but Ortiz and Santana gained the advantage when they introduced weapons. They fought out to the parking lot where Ortiz hit Taylor with a suplex onto a trash can which is where the segment ended.
Ricky Starks defeated Shawn Dean
On commentary, Taz emphasized that Starks and Brian Cage are Team Taz. This match was pretty back and forth. Starks and Dean locked up at the bell before Starks was knocked down with a shoulder tackle.
Dean went for a slingshot spear, but Starks feinted and hit a knee strike to gain control. Starks hit a standing Coffin Drop for a one count, referencing his feud with Darby Allin. Dean made his comeback with a DDT and a running knee, but Starks hit Roshambo out of nowhere for the win. While short, this was very well worked overall from both men.
Post-match, Starks celebrated with Taz at the commentary desk and drank out of Scott’s beverage.
Jake Hager defeated Marko Stunt
Stunt came out alone without the rest of Jurassic Express. Hager offered up a headlock for Stunt at the bell, but immediately stood up out of it and tossed Stunt aside. He opened the ropes and implored Stunt to walk out but Stunt then kicked the ropes into Hager’s groin and taunted him with the floss dance. Hager threw a tantrum in the ring.
There was no more mercy for Stunt as Hager cornered the smaller man before hitting a biel. Stunt tried to fight back but ate a big boot for his trouble. Hager hit a uranage into the head and arm choke for the squash stoppage.
Post-match, Hager threatened to attack even further, but Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus came out to make the save. Luchasaurus begged Hager not to attack Stunt, but he did anyway and quickly bailed. Hager flipped off Jurassic Express and left.
This was only Kazarian’s fourth singles match of the year (1-2) while Sabian came in with a 10-5 record. They performed technical chain wrestling at the bell and Sabian got the upper hand after an eye poke, but Kazarian returned fire with a running shoulder tackle and a dropkick. Kazarian attempted to keep up the offense but was tripped up by Ford. Sabian followed up with a soccer kick outside.
Kazarian attempted a comeback, but Sabian reversed it into the grounded octopus hold. Eventually, Sabian missed another soccer kick and Kazarian finally made his comeback with clotheslines and a flying forearm. He followed it up with an electric chair drop into a bridge for a near fall. Sabian went for the draping neckbreaker, but the two seemed to get a bit lost as they transitioned to the apron and traded strikes.
Sabian went for a springboard back in, but Kazarian cut him off and hit a slingshot cutter. Kazarian went for the pinfall but Ford moved Sabian’s foot to the bottom rope. Sabian went for the top rope stomp, but Kazarian moved and hit the inverted DDT for the pin.
This was a prime example of a match that desperately needed a crowd. Aside from the one awkward spot towards the end, the match was very solid and hard hitting, but there were unfortunately moments of dead silence. Additionally, despite the good work, both competitors feel somewhat directionless right now.
The Hybrid2 (Jack Evans & Angélico) defeated Joey Janela & Sonny Kiss
Kiss and Janela have been a fun team and one of the few consistent highlights on Dark. They came into this one with a 7-1 record. The Hybrid2 have only had two matches back in AEW since the pandemic started.
The Hybrid2 put themselves on top when Evans drove Kiss’ face into the turnbuckle. They worked as clear heels, which was established when Evans attempted a back handspring into an eye gouge. Angélico put Kiss into an inverted figure four, but the official had words for Janela who tried to break it up. While the official was distracted, the Hybrid2 double-teamed Kiss in the ring.
Janela finally got the hot tag and immediately hit a high crossbody on Evans. There was an innovative spot where Janela essentially forced Angélico to DDT his partner. Janela hit an STO on the apron, tagged in Kiss for a double stomp, and then hit a death valley driver on the floor, completing three consecutive rough bumps for Evans. Kiss hit a moonsault on the outside and a 450 splash on the inside, but Angélico broke up the pinfall.
Janela went for another death valley driver on Angélico, but he fought out and knocked him out of the ring. Evans put Kiss in a pinning predicament via a backslide followed by the wraparound bridge for the pinfall.
There were plenty of cool individual moments in this match, but it never really came together as a whole package.
Final Thoughts:
I have watched every single episode of AEW Dark, and not only was this the longest (the same length of an episode of Dynamite), it may have been the worst. Most weeks, Dark is neither very good nor bad, but aside from Kazarian vs. Sabian, every single match this week either (1) had a noticeable botch or sloppy work or (2) was a squash.
Compounding things was the commentary situation. Last week, I mentioned that Taz struggled, but this week, he was exponentially worse. I get that he is a heel commentator, but relentlessly arguing with Schiavone and belittling Scott, both over minuscule things, just made for an agonizing experience. Even worse, I have seen him plenty on Dynamite where he is just fine. Without making any sort of comment or judgment on the circumstances behind his absence, this show *needs* Excalibur back.
Nothing on the show was Dynamite-worthy, but if I had to pick the best match, I’d go with the aforementioned Kazarian vs. Sabian.
Mr. Brodie Lee will celebrate his TNT title victory on Dynamite this Thursday.
AEW’s social media confirmed the segment this afternoon. It comes as Lee squashed Cody to win the championship on Dynamite this past Saturday, ending Cody’s 91 day reign with the championship.
The squash was brutal enough that Cody had to be stretchered out after the match. The rest of the Dark Order, however, blocked the medics from taking Cody to the backstage area. The show ended with the Dark Order taking out Cody, Arn Anderson, and the rest of the Nightmare Family, with Lee dumping remnants of the old TNT title on Cody.
Already announced for next week’s Dynamite include Matt Hardy vs. Sammy Guevara, a tag team gauntlet match featuring The Natural Nightmares, Young Bucks, Best Friends, and FTR with the winners getting a AEW Tag Team title shot at All Out, Big Swole vs. Britt Baker, Rebel, and Penelope Ford in a handicap match, and a contract signing between MJF and Jon Moxley for their match at All Out.
Due to the NBA playoffs, Dynamite won’t air in its normal timeslot this week. Instead, it will air the following day, Thursday, at 8 p.m. EST.
Britt Baker’s tag team partners for Dynamite have been revealed.
AEW’s social media confirmed that Britt Baker will team with Rebel and Penelope Ford to take on Big Swole in a 3-on-1 handicap tag match for Dynamite. This follows a segment that took place on Dynamite Satuday where Baker successfully recruited Ford as a tag partner. Ford agreed after Britt promised that “Reba” would do Ford’s makeup for a year.
This would mark Baker’s return to the ring after a leg injury suffered back in May.
Already announced for next week’s Dynamite include Matt Hardy vs. Sammy Guevara, a tag team gauntlet match featuring Natural Nightmare, Young Bucks, Best Friends, and FTR with the winners getting a AEW Tag Team title shot at All Out, and a contract signing between MJF and Jon Moxley for their match at All Out.
Due to NBA playoffs, Dynamite will not air in it’s normal timeslot. It will instead air on Thursday at 8 p.m. EST.
While Shaquille O’Neal’s re-signing with WarnerMedia normally wouldn’t make headlines in the pro wrestling world, a sentence in the release caught people’s attention Monday.
The popular former basketball star will add to his duties with Turner Sports with possibility of AEW being one of those duties: “Could Shaq return to the ring, making a cameo at a future All Elite Wrestling (AEW) event on TNT? We shall see….”
The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch noted in his story about the new contract said the possibility is “in the embryonic stage at best” but that O’Neal had a message for Cody Rhodes: “I’d love to fight Cody. Write it. Print it. Text it to him. Call AEW up and tell them.”
The 48-year-old wrestling fan has made appearances in various top promotions through the years, first in WCW at 1994’s Bash at the Beach as he presented the World title to the winner of Hulk Hogan vs. Ric Flair; a guest host for a 2009 episode of WWE Raw; and backstage with Hogan on a 2012 episode of Impact Wrestling.
He appeared as a surprise participant in the 2016 Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania 32 and the plan was to work toward a singles match with Big Show at WrestleMania 33 but it never materialized due to O’Neal’s schedule.
The Dark Order dominated episode 218 of Being The Elite.
Dark Order celebrated Brodie Lee’s TNT Championship win in their locker room with food from Chili’s. They then discussed how each member spent their Chili’s endorsement deal money:
Alex Reynolds spent $1 million on tap dancing lessons.
Evil Uno bought a cardboard Brodie Lee cutout.
10 bought guns.
5 bought hair implants.
John Silver bought beer.
Lee bought six riding lawnmowers even though he doesn’t have a lawn to taunt Hangman Page.
A “F*ck Hangman” chant broke out in the Dark Order locker room. Lee gave Silver a hip toss onto a table.
Other highlights included:
The Young Bucks were shown hanging out at Dynamite, then signing inserts for their upcoming book.
Peter Avalon, Brandon Cutler and Leva Bates are tired of losing matches and can’t agree on whether or not to cheat to win their matches.
Matt Hardy asked The Bucks to fire Sammy Guevara after he gives Sammy a receipt for busting him open with a chair.
Christopher Daniels did a parody of a Life Alert commercial. This was great.
Guevara, Silver, Reynolds, Alex Abrahantes, Jake Hager, Willie Urbina, Marko Stunt, Santana and Ortiz had a Zoom call. This was a prolonged masturbation joke.
Kenny Omega and Hangman Page met Madusa backstage. Page looked Madusa in the eye and turned to stone.
Best Friends and Orange Cassidy set a trap to try to kill Cutler.
Colt Cabana met with Doc Sampson. Cabana’s face is completely covered in gold foil. He asked for Sampson to perform an experimental surgery to make him normal again. Sampson reluctantly agreed and the show ended with the surgery not going well.
A week after they had an eleven match lineup for Dark, AEW upped the ante and will roll with thirteen matches for this week’s show.
In one mismatch on paper, Jake Hager of The Inner Circle will face against Jurassic Express member Marko Stunt. This will be Hager’s first singles match since he lost to TNT Champion Cody on a July episode of Dynamite and his first match of any kind this month.
In another featured match, SCU’s Frankie Kazarian will return to singles competition against Kip Sabian (with Penelope Ford) who will be looking to extend a four match winning streak in traditional singles matches. Kazarian hasn’t worked a singles match since a July 1st win over Luther on Dark.
In other announced action:
Lance Archer (w/Jake Roberts) vs. D3
Penelope Ford (w/Sabian) vs. Heather Monroe
Mel vs. Red Velvet
Sonny Kiss/Joey Janela vs. The Hybrid2
Best Friends (w/Orange Cassidy) vs. Storm Thomas and Demetri Jackson
Billy and Austin Gunn vs. Frank Stone and Baron Black
Santana and Ortiz vs. Metro Brothers
Ricky Starks vs. Shawn Dean
Nyla Rose (w/Vickie Guerrero) vs. KiLynn King
Luther and Serpentico vs. The Initiative (w/Leva Bates)
Shawn Spears (w/Tully Blanchard) vs. Jessy Sorensen
AEW will give an update on Cody’s condition on the next Dynamite.
Their social media confirmed that an update will be given next next week following an attack that took place at the end of Saturday’s Dynamite.
Cody was set to defend the TNT title in the main event against Mr. Brodie Lee. Lee completely dominated the match, pinning Cody relatively quickly with the discus lariat to win the championship, ending Cody’s run with the title after 91 days.
Lee and the rest of the Dark Order eventually attacked Cody, preventing him from getting medical help. The rest of the Nightmare Family (Dustin Rhodes and QT Marshall) were laid out as Lee attacked Cody with a satchel. Brandi Rhodes came out to shield her husband from further attack, but was choked out by The Dark Order’s Anna Jay.
Lee finished the assault by dumping the contents of the satchel on Cody: the remnants of the former TNT title.
Due to the NBA playoffs, This week’s episode of Dynamite will air on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET.
Mr. Brodie Lee defeated Cody to win the TNT Championship in the main event of last night’s AEW Dynamite.
Lee beat Cody in what was essentially a squash match and his Dark Order faction left Cody’s Nightmare Family laying at the end of the show.
FTR continued their climb to the top of the tag team division with a win over Private Party in the show opener. FTR also revealed that they have aligned themselves with Tully Blanchard who accompanied them to ringside for the match.
Matt Hardy and Sammy Guevara’s feud continued last night. Hardy attacked Guevara with a chair, then sent him through a table. The two are scheduled to meet on Thursday’s Dynamite in a tables match.
MJF will challenge AEW World Champion Jon Moxley for the title at All Out on September 5, but last night MJF was in a neck brace and threatened legal action against Moxley unless Moxley agrees to not use the Paradigm Shift in their match.
The Elite trio of The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega defeated 3, 4 and 5 of The Dark Order, but the real story came after the match when Omega had to be pulled away from 5 by The Bucks for dishing out too much punishment.
Diamante and Ivelisse won the inaugural AEW Women’s Tag Team Cup tournament, scoring a victory over Brandi Rhodes and Allie.
