Josh Barnett explains why Bloodsport is ending & won’t return under another name

After making the surprise announcement Friday that he was ending his Bloodsport series, Josh Barnett went into further details as to why, confirming that it’s not a hiatus and is “closed unless something is done to get us where we need to go.”

Appearing on The Ariel Helwani Show Monday, Barnett said there was no tragedy or bad thing that caused him to make the decision but that in order to go forward with his vision, Bloodsport would need more capital, more employees and an office — more than an indie promotion and a lot less than WWE or AEW to be fully realized for how he views it.

“For me, Bloodsport had an evolution of where it was trying to get to, and we’re just not thereβ€”we’re not close. For me, it was better to end it now than to keep going and, quite possibly, diminish what the product is,” he said.

He said he had been considering the shutdown for quite sometime and something he had thought “very deeply and heavily about.” He had looked at sponsors “and some outside elements to help with building toward the ultimate example is. We weren’t able to do it,” he said, joking about a nice pitch deck he made for that effort.

“I had a timeline and we didn’t meet those goals,” he said.

He said when he made the announcement, he wasn’t trying to make a big deal out of it and didn’t want it to come off as a gimmick or to be insincere. He admitted to conflicting feelings in his own heart about whether that was going to be the case or not, but “I feel like I made the right choice.”

Asked if Bloodsport could go on without him, he shut that down quickly, saying it wouldn’t be revived under any other name, noting “It’s my show, my concept.”

He also said WWE had no influence in how their talent is booking on his shows and that both Paul Levesque and Nick Khan want their talent to get better and to get reps. He said he was backstage for Saturday’s WrestleMania 42 card.

Josh Barnett announces he is ending GCW Bloodsport ‘for the foreseeable future’

After nine years and 18 events, Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport is taking a break.

Barnett revealed the news during Friday’s event in Las Vegas as part of WrestleMania week after his win over Yugi Nagata in the main event. He ran down their accomplishments, said they had done some amazing things, “but for now, this door is closing.”

The former UFC heavyweight champion said is “shutting shop and calling it a day” while they have their dignity and that fans still love what they do. He put over GCW owner Brett Lauderdale’s efforts.

Barnett said he has his reasons for shutting things down and while Bloodsport is not done forever, it’s done “for the foreseeable future.” He thanked the wrestlers, Lauderdale and the fans before bidding adieu.

The no ropes worked shoot style debuted as Matt Riddle’s Bloodsport in April 2018 with Barnett taking over the franchise a year later. Since then, GCW has run Bloodsport events from New Jersey to Indiana to Los Angeles to Tokyo to New York City to London and more.

The shows brought wrestlers from all organizations at one point including WWE, AEW, TNA, NJPW and others.

Barnett spoke to me in 2019 about the Bloodsport concept and why he initially got involved which you can listen to for free here.

Two new matches official for Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XV

A clash between Nattie Neidhart and Shayna Baszler is one of two new additions to the card for Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XV.

It was announced today that Neidhart vs. Baszler and Erick Stevens vs. Fuminori Abe will both take place at the April 17 Bloodsport event in Las Vegas. Promoted by Barnett and Game Changer Wrestling, the show will air live on Triller TV+ with a start time of 3 p.m. Pacific/6 p.m. Eastern.

Outlets like Bloodsport helped Neidhart develop the heel “Nattie” persona that she’s now brought to WWE. She’s 2-0 in Bloodsport matches with victories over Miya Yamashita and Masha Slamovich.

Baszler was the first-ever WWE wrestler booked for Bloodsport when she wrestled at the event in 2024. She has a 3-0 Bloodsport record with wins against Slamovich, Yamashita, and Konami.

Though Baszler was released by WWE in May 2025, she still maintains a good relationship with the company while competing on the indies. She helps guest coach at the Performance Center and has appeared twice in cameos on NXT.

Stevens is a former ROH wrestler who has made a couple of indie comebacks after initially retiring in 2010. Getting to face Japanese standout Abe is a dream match for him, with Stevens calling Abe “one of the most skilled and prolific grapplers of the last decade.” Abe is a freelancer with experience in Big Japan, All Japan, and DDT.

This is the first match officially booked for the Bloodsport card, which will stream live on TrillerTV+ with a start time of 6 p.m. Eastern/3 p.m. Pacific on the Friday of WrestleMania week.

Dunne currently plays the character Rayo Americano in WWE but will be wrestling as himself at Bloodsport. In WWE, he’s part of a faction with El Grande Americano (Ludwig Kaiser) and Bravo Americano (Tyler Bate).

Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XIV results: Natalya vs. Masha Slamovich, Nick Khan in attendance

Natalya/Nattie Neidhart remained undefeated in Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport action, defeating TNA wrestler Masha Slamovich by TKO in the headliner of Saturday’s 14th event in Rutherford, New Jersey.

The beginning of the end saw Slamovich push Neidhart into the crowd and then hit a somersault dive. Back on the mat, the former TNA Knockouts Champion hit a spin kick and then some ground and pound before Neidhart got up and applied a sharpshooter.

Slamovich eventually escaped, the two exchanged some adult language and middle fingers, and then Neidhart spit in her face. Neidhart then started pounding on Slamovich until the referee called for the TKO to end the match in just over seven minutes.

The 43-year-old is now 2-0 in Bloodsport after debuting with a win over Miyu Yamashita in April.

WWE contracted wrestlers went 4-1 on the afternoon as Neidhart, Pete Dunne, Charlie Dempsey and Erik of the War Raiders picked up wins with only Ivar of the War Raiders falling in defeat.

WWE president Nick Khan was also in attendance at the show, but was not officially shown during the Triller+ broadcast. He has been in attendance for Bloodsport shows previously including during WrestleMania 40 weekend in Philadelphia.

Barnett himself was not in action on his event for the first time since the fifth edition back in February 2021.

Game Changer Wrestling has confirmed that Dunne vs. Gresham will take place at Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XIV in New Jersey this Saturday. The show is being held at the Williams Center in Rutherford and will air live on TrillerTV+.

Josh Barnett hyped the Dunne vs. Gresham matchup as featuring two of the best grapplers in wrestling.

Dunne — who will be wrestling his first match since May — has a 1-0 Bloodsport record with a victory over Timothy Thatcher from earlier this year.

Gresham is looking for his first Bloodsport win, holding an 0-2 record at the moment with losses to Zack Sabre Jr. and Masashi Takeda.

In addition to Dunne, WWE wrestlers Natalya and Charlie Dempsey will be competing at this Bloodsport indie event. Natalya vs. TNA’s Masha Slamovich is booked for the show. An opponent for Dempsey has not been announced yet.
