November 25, 2019 Observer Newsletter: Jim Cornette leaves NWA, weekend preview

After a week of controversy, Jim Cornette has resigned from his position as television announcer for the NWA Powerrr promotion.

Cornette, 58, to his credit, was arguably the best announcer as far as all aspects were concerned in the business at this point, if you figure in smoothness of delivery, ability to turn a phrase when warranted, knowledge of the moves as well as match and announcing psychology, and the key job of all, getting over new talent and storylines.

Ironically, it was that second aspect, turning a phrase, that led to his departure.

On the 11/19 show, during a match with NWA champion Nick Aldis vs. Trevor Murdoch, in an attempt to get Murdoch over, Cornette said that Murdoch was so tough that he “could strap a bucket of fried chicken on his back and drive a motor scooter through Ethiopia.” The commentary, and the show itself, were done live in Atlanta at the PBS Studio on 9/30.

Adam Cole to defend NXT title at WWE Survivor Series

UPDATE —

After originally announcing that Pete Dunne vs. Damian Priest vs. Killian Dain would be on this week’s NXT, WWE has noted that the match will instead take place at TakeOver: WarGames on Saturday night. The winner will challenge for Adam Cole’s NXT Championship at Survivor Series.

**********

The NXT Championship will be on the line at Survivor Series.

WWE announced today that Pete Dunne, Damian Priest, and Killian Dain will face off in a triple threat match at NXT TakeOver: WarGames on Saturday. The winner will advance to challenge Adam Cole for the NXT Championship at Survivor Series the next night.

Dunne, Priest, and Dain have been involved in a program on NXT. Dunne and Dain were supposed to have a match against each other last week, but Priest attacked Dain as he was making his entrance. A brawl broke out, with Priest standing tall after hitting a dive on Dunne and Dain.

WWE Champion Brock Lesnar and Universal Champion The Fiend also have title defenses at Survivor Series. Lesnar will defend his title against Rey Mysterio in a no holds barred match, while Daniel Bryan will challenge for The Fiend’s title.

Cole will be in the men’s WarGames match at TakeOver. It will be The Undisputed Era (Cole, Roderick Strong, Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish) vs. Tommaso Ciampa, Keith Lee, Dominik Dijakovic, and a partner.

Cole will face Dijakovic in a ladder match on this Wednesday’s NXT to decide which team gets the WarGames advantage.

WWE has also hyped that there will be an “open door” for Raw and SmackDown on Wednesday’s NXT. That will include The Revival facing NXT Tag Team Champions O’Reilly & Fish in a non-title match.

WWE adds no holds barred stipulation to Lesnar vs. Mysterio

A stipulation has been added to Brock Lesnar and Rey Mysterio’s WWE Championship match at Survivor Series.

During tonight’s Raw, WWE announced that Lesnar vs. Mysterio at Survivor Series will now be a no holds barred, no disqualification match. The pay-per-view is taking place at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois on Sunday (November 24).

Lesnar vs. Mysterio was confirmed for Survivor Series after a challenge that was issued by Mysterio two weeks ago. That came after an angle where Lesnar went looking for Mysterio on Raw, but Mysterio instead attacked Lesnar with a metal pipe and laid him out with a belt shot with the WWE title.

On tonight’s Raw, video of a promo from Paul Heyman aired. Despite saying that Lesnar will be 100 percent at Survivor Series, Heyman said there are rumors that Lesnar was injured in Mysterio’s attack. After mentioning the no holds barred stipulation, Heyman declared that Mysterio will either pull off a miracle or will be massacred so badly by Lesnar that Heyman can’t put it into words.

Mysterio then did an interview responding to Heyman. He accepted the stipulation and said Lesnar made the mistake of a lifetime. Mysterio said the old him would be demanding an apology, but he won’t be coming for an apology at Survivor Series. He’ll be coming for the WWE Championship.

Lesnar and Mysterio’s feud began when Lesnar attacked Mysterio and Dominick in September. Lesnar retained his WWE title against Cain Velasquez at Crown Jewel, with Mysterio then fighting off Lesnar with a steel chair after the match.

Here’s the updated card for Survivor Series:

  • WWE Champion Brock Lesnar defending against Rey Mysterio in a no holds barred, no DQ match
  • Universal Champion The Fiend defending against Daniel Bryan
  • Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch vs. SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley vs. NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler in a non-title match

  • Team Raw vs. Team SmackDown vs. Team NXT five-on-five-on-five men’s elimination tag match
  • Team Raw vs. Team SmackDown vs. Team NXT five-on-five-on-five women’s elimination tag match

November 25, 2002 Observer Newsletter: Survivor Series review, more

The WWE changed five championships, including the big two, and debuted the most expensive structure in wrestling history to headline the Survivor Series on 11/17 from New York’s Madison Square Garden.

On the positive side, it was a very entertaining stand alone show before a unique New York crowd that was very vociferous about what it liked. The bigggest pops were for the reuniting of the Dudleys, the debut of Scott Steiner, and the Raw title win by Shawn Michaels. It also, with booing, let the promotion know it didn’t like Edge all that much (the pretty boy thing), loved to boo Kurt Angle so much they were real mad when he was eliminated from the tag title elimination match, and thought more of Rob Van Dam than the promotion seems to. The effort was there in every match and while there was some sloppiness, there was nothing you would call a bad match.

Tonight, Bryan appeared on a Miz TV segment on SmackDown. Bryan said Wyatt/The Fiend is mentally unstable — but so is he. Rollins, Owens & The Street Profits defeated Imperium (WALTER, Marcel Barthel, Fabian Aichner & Alexander Wolfe) on tonight’s Raw. In the main event, Orton, Ricochet & Humberto Carrillo defeated The O.C. (AJ Styles, Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson).

Whether or not Orton would get along with Ricochet was the story of their six-man tag match on tonight’s Raw. He teased RKOing Ricochet but instead hit the move on Styles. After the match, Orton faked like he was going to attack Ricochet. Orton told Ricochet that he does what he wants, whenever he wants.

Teams from Raw, SmackDown, and NXT’s women’s divisions will also face off in an elimination tag match at Survivor Series. Sasha Banks is the captain of SmackDown’s team, with Dana Brooke and Carmella confirmed as her first two partners.

Lesnar vs. Mysterio WWE title match announced for Survivor Series

The WWE Championship will be on the line at Survivor Series later this month.

Brock Lesnar defending his WWE Championship against Rey Mysterio has been confirmed for the pay-per-view. The announcement of the match was made after a challenge that was issued by Mysterio on Raw tonight.

After Rey Mysterio fought him off with a steel chair at Crown Jewel, Lesnar appeared on this past Friday’s SmackDown and announced that he was “quitting” SmackDown to go after Mysterio on Raw.

Lesnar went looking for Mysterio on tonight’s Raw. But after Lesnar gave Dio Maddin an F-5 through the announce table, Mysterio attacked Lesnar with a baseball bat and laid him out with a belt shot with the WWE title.

Mysterio cut a promo challenging Lesnar to a match at Survivor Series. Mysterio vowed to get revenge for Lesnar attacking Dominik by coming after what Lesnar values most — the WWE title.

The Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois is hosting Survivor Series on November 24. Here’s the updated card for the PPV:

  • WWE Champion Brock Lesnar defending against Rey Mysterio
  • Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch vs. SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley vs. NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler in a non-title match

Raw, SmackDown & NXT tag champs to face off at WWE Survivor Series

A triple threat tag team match featuring the Raw, SmackDown and NXT Tag Team champions will take place at Survivor Series.

It was announced tonight on Raw that Raw Tag Team champions The Viking Raiders will face SmackDown champions The Revival and NXT champions Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly in a non-title triple threat match at Survivor Series. It plays into the event’s theme of brand supremacy, with NXT joining Raw and SmackDown for the first time.

Viking Raiders do have a history with the Undisputed Era stable as they won their first NXT Tag Team titles by defeating Roderick Strong & Kyle O’Reilly. The Revival are also former NXT Tag Team champions, becoming the first team to win them twice.

Another interpromotional match was announced earlier in the show, with Raw Women’s champion Becky Lynch facing NXT champion Shayna Baszler and SmackDown champion Bayley, also in a triple threat match.

Survivor Series 2019 will take place at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois on November 24.

Becky Lynch vs. Bayley vs. Shayna Baszler set for WWE Survivor Series

Three of WWE’s Women’s Champions will be facing off at Survivor Series.

On tonight’s episode of Raw, a non-title triple threat match between Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch, SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley, and NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler was announced for the pay-per-view. It’s taking place at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois on November 24 and will feature involvement from Raw, SmackDown, and NXT.

A sit-down interview with Lynch aired on Raw tonight. Lynch said she’s the target in the triple threat match, mentioning the issues she’s had with Bayley’s friend Sasha Banks and Baszler’s friend Ronda Rousey.

Baszler then interrupted the interview. She said Lynch defeated Rousey at WrestleMania, but Baszler isn’t Ronda Rousey. Baszler told Lynch that — while she won’t take her eyes off of Bayley — she’s going to pin Lynch or tap her out. She said the only thing Lynch will have to think about between now and Survivor Series is which one of her limbs will belong to Baszler.

Lynch responded by saying she’s happy they got the chance to talk so Baszler could feel the same doubt that Rousey felt. Lynch said she won’t be taking her eyes off Bayley either, but she’ll be coming directly for Baszler at Survivor Series. They went face-to-face to close the segment, with Lynch saying she’ll show Baszler who the real baddest woman on the planet is.

Baszler also took part in the NXT invasion of SmackDown last Friday and attacked Bayley after she had defended the SmackDown Women’s title against Nikki Cross.
