With WrestleMania 41 being held in Las Vegas, an appearance by “Stone Cold” Steve Austin could potentially be in the cards.
The Athletic spent time with Austin at his ranch in Nevada for a profile piece that was published this week. In the story, Austin indicated there’s a chance he could appear at WrestleMania 41 next April.
“I said I won’t leave Nevada. It’s hard to get me out of this state,” Austin said. “But … WrestleMania next year is in Vegas. That’s in Nevada.”
Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas is hosting WrestleMania 41 on Saturday, April 19 and Sunday, April 20, 2025. If Austin is involved with the event, it will be his first WrestleMania appearance since coming out of retirement to face Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38 in 2022. That no holds barred match — which wasn’t officially announced in advance — was Austin’s first time wrestling in nearly two decades.
There were rumors that the 59-year-old Austin could potentially show up during the Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes main event at WrestleMania 40 night two this April. Instead, two other legends filled that role. The Undertaker and John Cena helped Rhodes fend off interference by The Rock and the rest of The Bloodline. Rhodes defeated Reigns to win the Undisputed WWE Championship.
In the new edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer explained why there wasn’t a cameo by “Stone Cold” Steve Austin at WrestleMania 40.
The WrestleMania 40 night two main event between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns included appearances by WWE legends John Cena and The Undertaker. Some fans were hoping that Austin would also get involved and renew his rivalry with The Rock, but it didn’t end up happening.
Meltzer reports that Austin and WWE couldn’t reach a financial agreement. Because of that, Undertaker appeared in the spot that Austin was earmarked for:
I think a lot of people expected Steve Austin to come out next and take out Rock with a stunner, and then Rhodes would start hitting Cross Rhodes and win the title. Undertaker’s gong hit and he choke slammed and took out Rock. Austin was the person originally earmarked for that spot, but in the end they couldn’t reach a financial agreement and Undertaker was put in his place.
Cena, Undertaker, Seth Rollins, and Jey Uso all helped Rhodes fend off interference by The Bloodline in Sunday’s main event. It ended with Rhodes defeating Reigns to end his 1,316-day run as champion.
At WrestleMania 38 in 2022, Austin came out of retirement to defeat Kevin Owens in a no holds barred match. Austin hasn’t appeared at WrestleMania in the two years since.
Some of WWE’s biggest legends of all time could be involved with WrestleMania 40.
In the new edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reports that the belief right now is “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Undertaker, and John Cena “will have something at WrestleMania” in some form. Meltzer notes that nothing is official regarding them appearing at the event:
Nothing is official but the belief right now is that Steve Austin, Undertaker and John Cena will have something at WrestleMania in some form. At press time, there is no creative locked in for Cena and Austin at this moment, or if there is it’s a well-guarded secret. A lot depends on how much they are willing to do and money. Cena is free but depending on what acting stuff he has and how quick after he’s filming would determine how much he can or can’t do for insurance reasons. Austin and Undertaker would be based on willingness that they have.
After returning to the ring against Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38 in 2022, Austin did not appear at WrestleMania 39 last year.
Undertaker was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame during WrestleMania 38 weekend.
WrestleMania 40 is taking place from Philadelphia on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7. The Rock will be in action in the night one main event, teaming with Roman Reigns against Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins. Reigns vs. Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship will then headline night two of WrestleMania 40.
“Stone Cold” Steve Austin isn’t closing the door on competing in the ring again.
Austin came out of retirement at WrestleMania 38 in 2022, wrestling his first match in nearly two decades. He defeated Kevin Owens in a no holds barred match that wasn’t officially announced in advance. It was instead advertised as a KO Show segment with Owens and Austin.
In an interview with ESPN to promote WWE 2K24, the 59-year-old Austin didn’t rule out the possibility of having another match:
I said I’d never get in a ring again unless all the stars aligned. And for some reason, somehow, they all did. And at the age of 57, I headlined the first night of WrestleMania. I never thought I’d do that. If you’d have told me that when I retired in [2003], I’d have said, ‘You’re crazy.’ So I’m not gonna sit here and say no to anything, because you never say never in this crazy business of sports entertainment.
Austin told ESPN that, if he does wrestle again, he has an opponent in mind who he would like to face. Austin did not name who that opponent is.
ESPN wrote:
When asked whether he had an idea of what opponent he would want in what would likely be his final career match, Austin said he did. But he did not want to mention the name, because he was not promoting the match, nor did he want to add pressure on WWE or the foe to make it happen.
When asked about potentially facing CM Punk, Austin said that the matchup “would be a good one.”
I like Punk, and I think Punk likes me — so, as long as he can take a [Stone Cold] Stunner [laughs]. I consider him a great friend, a great guy and a great wrestler who’s had a great career. We’ll see.
Punk returned to WWE at Survivor Series last November and was scheduled to challenge World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40, but Punk will instead be out of action for several months after suffering a torn triceps in the Royal Rumble. Punk underwent surgery for the injury earlier this month.
Austin told ESPN that he loves the pro wrestling business more than anything else he’s ever done in his life:
I love the sports entertainment business more than anything I’ve ever done in my life. And you get a dose of it, and you want more. And so here I am talking to you a couple years later about doing it again. And that’s how addicting it is to me, just to talk about it. And I get excited, and I’ll start talking too fast.
But it’s not gonna happen. But it could.
On Wrestling Observer Radio last December, Dave Meltzer and Garrett Gonzales discussed the possibility of a potential Austin vs. Punk dream match:
Alpha Academy and Drew Gulak will be guests on this week’s The Bump.
Slim Jim announced that their ‘Fast Meat’ car featured at WWE’s Survivor Series event has been stolen. It was last seen in California, as the car was headed to Los Angeles for a photo shoot. People with tips are encouraged to contact the LAPD or Los Angeles Crime Stoppers.
Stone Cold Steve Austin on X: Thanks to everyone for the Happy Birthday wishes today. I always appreciate it. I had a great f****** time both living a dream and entertaining the @wwe and Pro Wrestling fans all over the world. What a f****** ride..Cheers, M***********!! And that’s the bottom line, cause Stone Cold said so.
PWInsider is reporting that Marvin Jackson, who filed a lawsuit against WWE over alleged injuries that took place while he attended WrestleMania 38, will get a chance to argue for the continuation of the lawsuit during the week of February 5. Jake Hager joined News 9 to talk about AEW’s upcoming debut in Oklahoma.

It appears “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s in-ring days have officially come to an end in WWE or anywhere for that matter.
Austin told NBC Los Angeles that while he loves his relationship with WWE, he doesn’t miss being in the mix on a regular basis — although he sounded open to return for appearances.
“Coming back to do something from time to time is fine, because I love my relationship with WWE, but my days in the ring are done. Although, I did do the main event at WrestleMania last year in Dallas but that was kind of a fluke and we pulled it off,” he said. “It’s good to be back and see some of the faces, but I’ve been gone for a long time and I do not miss it.”
Austin returned at the first night of last year’s WrestleMania 38 in Dallas, Texas, confronting Kevin Owens during an interview segment that turned into a no holds barred match. It was Austin’s first in-ring action since 2003’s WrestleMania.
Austin said he has been focused on other business opportunities like with his Broken Skull beer line and Kawasaki.
Steve Austin says he kept turning down WWE’s pitches for a WrestleMania 38 match until they came back with different creative.
Austin appeared on Out of Character on Wednesdy and spoke about his in-ring return last year.
Austin said:
I turned them down several times until they kept coming back with different creative. KO was always in the conversation, I was down with that cause I love that guy, he’s awesome.
On the inside, I was knocking his head-off so many times because I hadn’t thrown a punch in 19 years. I told him when we got finished, I said, ‘Dude, I cannot believe you didn’t give me a receipt out there.’ That’s the good-natured heart of KO.
I think he was thrilled to be out there and I was thrilled to be with him. It took some talking, we got everthing lined up, you saw what happened.
He was asked about his preparation for the match and if he did any in-ring training ahead of time.
Austin responded:
Zero in-ring training. I was doing cardio. Here’s an inside tip for you. I love Sheamus, he’s got a great YouTube channel, Celtic Warrior Workouts, whatever it’s called. I got on there, I watched Edge’s routine, I watched Bryan Danielson, Daniel Bryan’s, whatever his name is, I watched his training routine. But the one that really got me was Becky Lynch’s comeback routine. So, I did Becky Lynch’s routine over and over again and then I invented my own out of that.
So, I was training hard at my house but I didn’t have a ring. Once I got to Dallas – I got there 3-4 days early because I always do – I ran the ropes a lot with Drew Gulak, who is absolutely wonderful and is a great talent, super guy, very intuitive in the ring.
Asked what he thought of his match with Kevin Owens on the show, Austin responded:
It was what it was. I wanted to give them more but the whole time, when you’ve got that amount of people out there, I’ve been in front of a million crowds, but you’re just trying to pace yourself. When you saw me go sip beers, I wasn’t doing that to advertise my beer, I was doing that to just take a breather and just kind of monitor the system because I was getting a little gassed.
In January, our own Dave Meltzer reported that Austin has turned down multiple pitches for a match at WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles. He turned down a pitch for a match against Brock Lesnar as well as Roman Reigns, opting to not wrestle on the show at all. He would later tell the Wrestling Classic that he believes WWE should focus on its current roster at this year’s event.
When asked if WrestleMania 38 was his final match, Austin responded by saying “never say never.”
If the stars align again, hell, it could happen again.

It was announced today that “Stone Cold Takes on America” will premiere on A&E at 10 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday, April 30. The show will be part of WWE’s Sunday night programming block on A&E. WWE programming returns to A&E this Sunday (February 19) with new seasons of “Biography: WWE Legends” and “WWE Rivals.” Sunday’s Biography episode will focus on the nWo. The Rivals premiere will spotlight the rivalry between Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant.
“As far as Austin goes, Steve might be at the show. I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised at all. He might do something on the show, but he did in fact turn down wrestling at the show,” Meltzer said. “He was offered [Brock] Lesnar, he was offered Roman Reigns. He could have named his opponent if he wanted to do it with anybody else, but he did not choose to wrestle on the show.”
Meltzer added that it’s a similar situation regarding Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s WrestleMania 39 status. Johnson didn’t feel he had the time to get into the type of shape he would need to be in for a WrestleMania-caliber main event this year. Meltzer said the door was left open for Johnson to wrestle at WrestleMania in 2024.
At WrestleMania 38 last year, Austin returned to the ring for the first time in nearly two decades. He defeated Kevin Owens in a no holds barred match in the main event of WrestleMania 38 night one. The match wasn’t officially announced in advance, instead being advertised as a KO Show segment with Austin and Owens.
WrestleMania 39 is being held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2. Here are the matches that have already been confirmed for the event:

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin has responded to rumors that he’s training for an in-ring return.
In a video from his home gym on Saturday, Austin noted that people have been asking him if the workout videos he’s been posting are because he’s training for an event. Austin said people can speculate what they want, but the reason he’s been working out is because he got tired of “looking like sh*t.”
People have been speculating, ‘Hey Steve, what are you doing? What are you training for? Are you training for an event?’ Speculate what you want for. I just simply looked in the mirror and realized I look like sh*t, so I called my diet coach up. And my macros are currently, give or take, roughly around 2650 calories, 300-320 grams of protein, 150 grams of carbs on a regular day, will spike at 420 on a load up. I still drink beer on Friday nights. Get three Broken Skull IPAs, and that’s pretty much it. I’m probably, as far as body weight goes, sub-232, the leanest I’ve been in forever. Anyway, that’s the bottom line, I’m out. I just got tired of looking like — when I looked in the mirror, I looked like sh*t. I got tired of looking like sh*t, so I’m taking actions to do something about it. I gotta go. Catch you down the road.
Fightful reported earlier this week that, following the retirement of Vince McMahon, WWE’s new regime has made an offer for Austin to wrestle another match. It’s not clear if that potential match would be at WrestleMania 39, an event in Saudi Arabia, or somewhere else.
At WrestleMania 38 this April, Austin returned to the ring for his first match in nearly 20 years. Austin defeated Kevin Owens in a no holds barred match in the main event of night one of WrestleMania 38. The match wasn’t officially announced in advance, with WWE instead promoting it as a KO Show segment and teasing that Austin could get physical.
