Kyle Fletcher, Marq Quen likely to miss significant time due to injuries

The injury bug has bitten AEW twice over the last week as both Kyle Fletcher and Private Party’s Marq Quen are expected to miss significant time with injuries.

First acknowledged on this past Saturday’s Collision, Fightful Select reported some updates on both Monday.

Fletcher, the reigning TNT Champion, is said to have sustained a meniscus injury in addition to other undisclosed “additional injuries” that are expected to keep him out of action for a while. He appeared to sustain the meniscus injury during his March 28 tag team match that saw he and Mark Davis defeat The Rascalz, but it’s unclear if the other injuries are linked to that.

It remains to be seen whether AEW will keep the title on Fletcher or introduce an interim title as they have in the past.

Quen and Isiah Kassidy just returned to AEW in March after more than a year away, wrestling two tag team matches, the latest coming on the same edition of Collision where Fletcher got hurt. Fightful reported that Quen may have sustained a tear, but it’s unknown to what body part.

Regardless, they stated it’s expect he will miss “some significant time.” It’s also unknown if he sustained his injury during that March 28 match.

On this past Saturday’s Collision, Kassidy alluded to Quen being injured and targeted reigning Continental Champion Jon Moxley, but a match between the two has yet to be announced.

WOR Video: Mercedes Mone, others injured

Mercedes Mone, among others, are currently dealing with injuries.

On Monday’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave and Bryan discussed Mercedes Mone’s injury during the main event of NJPW Resurgence on Sunday. Mone had attempted to do a code red off the top rope, but instead crashed to the floor, breaking her ankle. She then went into the ring, where opponent Willow Nightingale gave Mone two doctor bombs to pin Mone and become the first Strong Women’s Champion.

“Obviously Mercedes was supposed to win the championship,” Meltzer said. “I can’t say one hundred percent, but when I was told about [the tournament], which was before it happened, I was told she was winning the tournament. You can tell the ref was just freaked out.”

With Nightingale’s win, Meltzer argued that this could be what AEW needs in order to really get going on Nightingale.

“AEW kinda got handed something with Willow winning this match and beating Mercedes and everything, and should really capitalize on it ASAP rather than just letting it fall through,” he said.

Other injuries were also talked about including Liv Morgan suffering a shoulder injury that may require surgery, Dakota Kai with an unknown injury, Mark Davis of Aussie Open suffering an injury that forced Aussie Open to vacate both the IWGP and Strong Tag Team titles, and Taiji Ishimori suffering an injury to his cervical vertebra that has caused him to pull out of the Best of the Super Juniors tournament.

Alexa Bliss reportedly taking time off for sinus surgery

Alexa Bliss is reportedly taking time off for sinus surgery.

PWInsider reported this afternoon that Bliss was written off WWE TV following Extreme Rules due to upcoming sinus surgery. They could not confirm how long she would be out of action for.

At Extreme Rules, Bliss was unsuccessful in challenging Charlotte Flair for her Raw Women’s title. After the match, Charlotte laid out Bliss and proceeded to destroy Bliss’ doll, Lilly. Once Bliss was able to recover, she became inconsolable over the apparent death of her doll, wailing on the entrance ramp with what remained of Lilly.

Sheamus is another WWE star that is set to undergo surgery. He underwent surgery for a second time for a broken nose that will keep him out of action for a few weeks. He lost the three-way United States title match between himself, champion Damian Priest, and Jeff Hardy at Extreme Rules, then lost another title match the following night on Raw where there were no disqualifications and no count outs.

WWE’s Natalya undergoing surgery for leg injury

Natalya has provided an update on the leg injury she suffered during a match on Raw this past Monday.

In a tweet, Natalya mentioned that she would be undergoing surgery.

“Today my surgeon told me that I’m an anomaly,” she wrote. ”It’s been an intense week to say the least. All I asked was to be put back in the fight and FAST. Surgery will fix me, defending our championships will drive me. #UNBREAKABLE”

WWE additionally tweeted that more information on Natalya’s injury would come this Monday on Raw.

During Monday’s match, Natalya and her tag team partner Tamina, who carry the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles, faced Eva Marie and Doudrop in a contender’s match. As Doudrop wrestled Natalya, she rolled over Natalya at one point, causing injury to Natalya’s leg. Tamina was tagged in and finished the match quickly as Natalya was checked on by WWE medical staff.

Natalya and Tamina have held the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles since the May 14, 2021 edition of SmackDown, defeating Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler.

Simone Johnson to undergo knee surgery

Simone Johnson is undergoing knee surgery tomorrow.

Johnson revealed the news on her Twitter account today, writing the following: “so tomorrow i’m having knee surgery for the third time. as not fun as surgery is, i’m looking forward to my knees not popping out anymore. that said, please send me video games suggestions, movie suggestions (preferably scary) or anything else to help pass the time.”

Johnson, daughter of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, signed with the WWE back in February and has been training at the WWE Performance Center. She has not appeared on NXT television, but has been seen in the crowds during Raw, SmackDown, and NXT shows.

The Rock announced earlier this month that he and his family, excluding Simone, had all tested positive and were recovering from COVID-19. While his two younger daughters only had mild symptoms, Rock said that he and his wife, Lauren Hashian experienced harsher symptoms.

ACH return bout announced for NJPW Strong, Alex Coughlin injured

New Japan Pro Wrestling announced matches for this Friday’s Strong event while also announcing an injury.

The company announced this evening that Alex Coughlin has suffered a neck injury and as a result will not be competing in upcoming Strong events.

Coughlin last competed during the Lion’s Break Collision tapings in June.

Matches were also announced for this Friday’s New Japan Strong. In a six-man tag team match, TJP, ACH, and Alex Zayne will face PJ Black, Misterioso, and Blake Christian. This will be the first time ACH has wrestled for NJPW since 2018, working Lion’s Break Project 1.

In a tag team match, Clark Connors and Jordan Clearwater will face Logan Riegel and Barrett Brown..

The two semifinal matches in the NJPW Cup USA tournament will also take place on this card. KENTA will face Jeff Cobb, while David Finlay will face Tama Tonga. The winners of these two matches will face off in the finals on August 21.

Hiromu Takahashi off this week’s NJPW shows due to shoulder injury

Hiromu Takahashi is off upcoming NJPW events due to a shoulder injury.

NJPW posted on their website tonight that their medical staff has determined that Takahashi has suffered an injury to his left shoulder. As a result, Takahashi is off tomorrow morning’s card in Shizuoka and the July 31 card at Korakuen Hall.

Despite the injury, NJPW wrote in their statement that they are still expecting Takahashi to return for his scheduled IWGP Jr. title match against Taiji Ishimori. That match is scheduled to take place at Summer Struggle in Jingu on August 29.

A six-man tag match pitting  Hiromu Takahashi, Tetsuya Naito, and BUSHI against EVIL, Dick Togo, and Taiji Ishimori was scheduled to take place both on July 29 and July 30. Both matches have now been changed into a tag team match, with Natio & BUSHI taking on EVIL & Ishimori.

Takahashi last wrestled on July 27, teaming with Tetsuya Naito & SANADA in a losing effort against Bullet Club’s EVIL, Taiji Ishimori, and Dick Togo.

Velveteen Dream involved in car accident, released from hospital

Velveteen Dream has been released from the hospital following a car accident.

Further details about the accident haven’t been revealed. Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful was first to report the news, saying Dream (real name Patrick Clark, 24) was released from the hospital on June 26. Dave Meltzer has since confirmed this report.

The news comes as new accounts of sexual misconductallegations have surfaced involving Velveteen Dream and underage minors during the #SpeakingOut movement. Neither Dream nor WWE have commented on the allegations. Dream didn’t appear on this week’s episode of NXT, though he was included in the commercial that aired for NXT’s Great American Bash.

Dream was previously accused of inappropriate behavior on social media with an underage fan back in April. He issued a statement then denying that allegation: “A private photo of mine was shared without my consent or knowledge and I am working with a third party to look into this matter.”

Dream was last seen on television in an interview that aired on the June 17 episode of NXT. At TakeOver: In Your House earlier this month, he unsuccessfully challenged for Adam Cole’s NXT Championship in a Backlot Brawl.
