Seth Rollins says first match back at WrestleMania 42 is ‘nerve-wracking’

Getting cleared in time for WrestleMania 42 was a concern for Seth Rollins after getting injured in October 2025. Despite which he is ready to face Gunther at the Premium Live Event keeping note of their career parallels.

Speaking with ESPN, Rollins talked about his history with Gunther who he’s known since their first in-ring encounter at Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) in 2019.

“He’s the real deal, that guy there’s no joke there. He’s legitimate. I mean you watch his body of work and I’ve been, this is a guy that I’ve known since he was Walter back in his wXw days in Germany. I crossed paths with him and he’s one of those guys that we have something very similar in that we came from kind of nowhere. No one really thought that we were going to be huge, major stars in the industry when we were young cats. And now we’re at a point where ‘here we are at Wrestlemania’, the Grandest Stage, two of the most renowned in-ring performers, the last two decades.”

“And this will be our first real go at it. We’ve had one in-ring encounter which was like seven years ago and this will be this will be an interesting test and especially for my first match back”

Talking about his mindset heading into WrestleMania 42, considering it’s his first match back in six months, he stated fans can expect the best version of him.

“As far as outcome is concerned, what I will predict is that I will put on a show because it’s Wrestlemania and that’s what I do. And so, if anybody out there is wondering what version of Seth Rollins we’re going to get, I promise you right now, I will look you dead in the eye. You are going to get the very best version. You are going to get the Wrestlemania version of Seth Rollins that you know and are accustomed to.”

He added that while it’s exciting, having a WrestleMania match as his first bout back post-injury is nerve-wracking especially without trial runs to ease into it.

“I’ve been jonesing for it. Yeah, it’s exciting. I mean, it’s nerve-wracking anytime you come back and your first match is at WrestleMania. You don’t even get a couple of trial runs or anything like that. You’re just into the fire.”

Rollins vs. Gunther is slated for Night One of WrestleMania 42 on April 18. Last month, he attacked Paul Heyman on Raw, and was arrested. On the March 30 edition of the show, Gunther ambushed Rollins further escalating their rivalry for the Premium Live Event.

Fight Game: What’s left for Chris Jericho in AEW?

John LaRocca and Garrett Gonzales return with a brand-new Fight Game to discuss some of the most topical things going on in pro wrestling this week.

They gave out their thumbs up and thumbs down before jumping into two main topics:

  • The first is about the return of Chris Jericho to AEW. What does he have left and why did he choose AEW over WWE?
  • Then, they focused on the Gunther vs. Seth Rollins match at WrestleMania 42, which John predicted last week, as well as the newly-made WrestleMania 42 matches.

They finished up with their Observe This segment, talking about stories from Dave Meltzer’s 1985 Observer Book. They went over the very first WrestleMania, gave thoughts from the rewatch, and also discussed Dave’s comments from 1985.

How Gunther vs. Seth Rollins WrestleMania 42 match came together

The current health status of Bron Breakker didn’t have a direct role in the making of Gunther vs. Seth Rollins for next month’s WWE WrestleMania 42, according to our Dave Meltzer.

The match between the former WWE World Heavyweight Champions came together on Monday’s Raw after Rollins took out Paul Heyman with a chair. The angle was discussed on Wrestling Observer Radio with Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez speculating the bout was made due to Breakker not being cleared.

On X Tuesday, Meltzer wrote the Gunther vs. Rollins match wasn’t made because Breakker wasn’t cleared in time and “that was the updated plan regardless.”

He later added, “There were multiple other ideas since that specific injury.”

Breakker and the also injured Bronson Reed took Rollins out in storyline last October to cover for Rollins’ shoulder surgery. Rollins made his return in February but without Breakker or even Reed to get revenge on.

The news comes after reports earlier this month that there was optimism for Breakker’s return before WrestleMania 42 as he recovers from hernia surgery.

Gunther was reportedly set to take on Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania before Mysterio got injured.

Seth Rollins vs. Gunther official for WWE WrestleMania 42

Seth Rollins and Gunther will do battle at WrestleMania.

The match was made during a show-long angle on Raw that saw Adam Pearce ask Paul Heyman if he had read his emails. Heyman ignored Pearce and headed to the ring to talk about Rollins instead. Pearce cut him off and announced that not only had all charges against Rollins had been dropped, but Rollins was also medically cleared.

This brought out the former head of The Vision who attacked Heyman from behind with a steel chair. He went for the stomp but suddenly was dragged out of the ring by Gunther, who had not been seen on television for the last few weeks. He dragged Rollins to the announce table and put him to sleep with a rear naked choke as he pointed to the WrestleMania sign.

Later backstage, Jackie Redmond asked Pearce for a medical update. Pearce said that Rollins was still cleared, and he’ll get his chance for revenge at WrestleMania.

Rollins returned to WWE at Elimination Chamber, targeting Paul Heyman who was out of action briefly after Rollins laid him out with a steel chair and a stomp. Heyman lured Rollins to the ringside area on last week’s Raw, only to have Rollins be escorted out by security after announcing he had filed a restraining order.

From revenge quests to Attitude Era legends, who could be Gunther’s WrestleMania 42 opponent? | Opinion

His wrestling resume steadily growing after retiring John Cena and AJ Styles in back-to-back months, Gunther’s dominant streak has hit an abrupt halt since February.

He was not present for the past few episodes of Raw which has drawn concern from fans on what’s in store for him at WWE WrestleMania 42.

There were reports of him hoping to add Rey Mysterio to the list of star careers to end at his hands. However, Mysterio’s rib injury altered those plans.

Gunther has proven his spot among the top names of the WWE roster and it would be strange for him not to be part of WWE’s biggest shows of the year. So, let’s dive into a few fun potential opponents for the Ring General at The Grandest Stage of Them All.

Dragon Lee fulfills his revenge quest against Gunther

Dragon Lee remains one of the most compelling options based on his storyline with Gunther, In February, Gunther showed no remorse when he attacked Lee and refused to let go of a sleeper hold. Lee was left unconscious in the ring despite Adam Pearce swooping out security to control the situation.

At WrestleMania 42, the feud could come full circle if Lee stands up to Gunther and they battle it out in a rematch to settle the score once and for all.

Penta confronts Gunther and raises the stakes

If it’s not Lee, Intercontinental Champion Penta could face off against Gunther for what he did to his friend and ally instead.

While they have worked together on house shows, the two have never crossed paths on TV.

With Dominik Mysterio otherwise occupied with Finn Balor’s exit from the Judgment Day, a rematch between him and Penta for the IC Title at WrestleMania seems unlikely.

Penta could raise the stakes for a Gunther match by putting the Intercontinental title on the line against Gunther. After all, Gunther does hold the record as the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion for 666 days which could add a way to get to the match that makes sense.

Joe Hendry capitalizes on WrestleMania 41 momentum

After Kevin Owens was pulled from action due to serious neck surgery in April 2025, Randy Orton walked into WrestleMania 41 without knowing who would be his opponent.

Joe Hendry, then TNA World Champion, responded and got the shot against Orton, Despite the loss, the positive fan reaction helped his smooth transition to NXT.

Hendry became a viral star during his TNA tenure with this entrance song and the “Say his name and he appears” catchphrase of sorts. He competed on NXT since 2024 amid the brand’s crossover feud with TNA.

In November 2025, Hendry officially put pen to paper in a deal with WWE. After Oba Femi relinquished the NXT Championship for his move to the main roster, Hendry won a seven man ladder match in February to win the title.

Hendry could appear at WrestleMania 42 in a showdown against Gunther to sustain momentum from last year’s show, maybe in another mystery opponent presentation. This would also further sow the seeds for a potential main roster feud someday.

A “Stone Cold” Steve Austin standoff leads to Kevin Owens’ return

With Gunther targeting WWE legends to keep in line with his ‘career- iller’ persona, he could find himself standing opposite an icon from the Attitude Era, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

Earlier this month, Austin commented on a potential WrestleMania 42 appearance, citing an interest in attending the event while hyping the current talent on the WWE roster.

If Gunther attempts a feud with Austin, Kevin Owens could step up and stand toe-to-toe with Gunther. The reports on his recovery suggest a return sometime this year after recovering from his neck surgery in 2025. He has also been spotted at the WWE Performance Center, signaling positive progress in his recovery.

Even if it doesn’t lead to a full-fledged in-ring return, an Owens appearance at WrestleMania 42 would elevate the moment. His alliance with Austin is solidified after their impromptu match at WrestleMania 38 with Owens using the Stunner as his signature move.

If Owens has time, he would also have ample opportunity to reunite with Sami Zayn who is navigating a tough time on SmackDown.

The Rock might have more than CM Punk to worry about

The Rock might already have his hands full with CM Punk following his remark about Sika Anoa’i. It further fuels their history from a little more than 12 years ago.

Roman Reigns gave each member of his family free rein to take revenge on Punk for his comments. This statement was made after The Usos’ interference which begs the question: which other Anoa’i Family member might step up next?

The Rock’s schedule around WrestleMania is uncertain in light of his movie filming and Hollywood commitments.

However, if The Rock shows up at WrestleMania 42, Gunther might be tempted to provoke him into a match. After all, Gunther has built his reputation around retiring greats and what better name to add to that list than The Rock?

Final thoughts

It is a tough call for WWE to make while considering a worthy opponent for Gunther especially with WrestleMania being the battlefield. Whether it’s a returning legend or an unexpected name from the current roster, the match has the potential to shape his next chapter in WWE.

Either way, WrestleMania 42 remains the perfect stage for Gunther to continue defining his legacy. Perhaps we’ll find out on Monday’s Raw from Madison Square Garden who might help him get there.

Update on planned WWE WrestleMania 42 matches | Exclusive

Dave Meltzer has an update on the currently planned WWE WrestleMania 42 card.

In today’s edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer wrote that in addition to the announced matches, Drew McIntyre vs. Jacob Fatu and AJ Lee vs. Becky Lynch are expected to be added.

Meltzer wrote:

“Matches that have been confirmed to us on the show or announced are the two main events, Stephanie Vaquer vs. Liv Morgan and Jade Cargill vs. Rhea Ripley for the two different women’s titles, AJ Lee vs. Becky Lynch for the IC title, Lesnar vs. Femi, and Drew McIntyre vs. Jacob Fatu. McIntyre vs. Fatu is scheduled for the 3/20 Smackdown show but it was described as something designed to heighten interest in their Mania match.”

Meltzer also speculated that Seth Rollins will either wrestle Logan Paul or Bron Breakker on the show, depending on if Breakker is healed from hernia surgery in time.

“In looking at other things, Seth Rollins vs. either Logan Paul or Bron Breakker seems like a likely direction. It has not been confirmed to us on whether Breakker will be ready after hernia surgery and we were [told] the Paul & Austin Theory vs. Usos direction does not necessarily mean Paul won’t be in that match and is unrelated.”

Theory & Paul vs. The Usos is scheduled for Monday’s edition of WWE Raw.

Earlier this month, there were reports that WWE is planning at least six women’s matches for the WrestleMania card this year. Meltzer added that a multi-team match for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships could be added to the lineup.

Meltzer added:

“It certainly appears there will be a multiple team women’s tag title match with Nia Jax & Lash Legend, Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss, Bayley & Lyra Valkyria, Asuka & Kairi Sane and the Bella Twins all seeming to be in that mix. I could also see something similar for the Smackdown tag titles.”

Earlier this week, it was reported that Gunther vs. Rey Mysterio had been the plan for Mania before Mysterio suffered a rib injury.

“Gunther doesn’t seem to have any kind of a program. Some think Rey Mysterio, who has also been injured. A Grande Americano vs. Grande Americano mask vs. mask match would seem to be a direction, whether at this event or later,” Meltzer continued.

“Carmelo Hayes seems to be in the direction of Ilja Dragunov for the U.S. title, Trick Williams with Sami Zayn as well as Giulia vs. Tiffany Stratton for the US title.”

Meltzer further speculated about Jelly Roll’s possible involvement for WrestleMania 42 following his SmackDown appearance last week as a guest on The Miz TV.

“There seems the possibility of something involving Jelly Roll. But that looks to be most of the show right there given there are expected to be 14 to 16 total matches over the two nights.”

The full edition of this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter is available for subscribers here.

WWE WrestleMania 42 announced lineup:

  • Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship
  • Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship
  • Stephanie Vaquer vs. Liv Morgan for the Women’s World Championship
  • Jade Cargill vs. Rhea Ripley for the WWE Women’s Championship
  • Oba Femi vs. Brock Lesnar

Update on Gunther’s WWE WrestleMania 42 plans

WWE reportedly had another legend lined up for Gunther at WrestleMania 42.

BodySlam reports that Gunther was originally slated to begin a program with Rey Mysterio which would have culminated in a WrestleMania 42 match. The angle was to begin after Gunther attacked Dragon Lee on the March 2 episode of WWE Raw. However, plans for Gunther vs. Mysterio are currently uncertain due to Mysterio having suffered a rib injury in January.

Mysterio suffered fractured ribs during a match with Austin Theory on the January 26 WWE Raw. He took part in the Royal Rumble match the following Saturday but hasn’t wrestled since. Mysterio has been doing commentary for recent editions of AAA on Fox, including Saturday’s airing of the first part of Rey de Reyes.

Gunther’s attack on Lee earlier this month was his last televised appearance.

WrestleMania 42 will emanate from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on April 18 and 19. Already scheduled for the show is Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk for the World Heavyweight title and Randy Orton challenging Cody Rhodes for the WWE title.

‘Female Gunther’ weighs in on nickname, names WWE dream opponent

A WWE prospect recently revealed her reaction to being labeled the “female Gunther” by fans after an awkward encounter last year.

Just over a year ago, former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Gunther visited the trainees during the WWE LFG show. An interaction with Zena Sterling (real name Olena Sadovska) in particular stuck out as he blatantly mocked her mannerisms and added that “no one wants to see Barbie.”

Speaking with TMZ’s Inside the Ring, Sterling was asked about the “female Gunther reference” by WWE fans on social media and she said it doesn’t bother her and considers it a compliment, admitting that she reads them and jokingly pats herself on the back when she does.

The 23-year-old has been competing on WWE NXT live events and was last seen losing to Tyra Mae Steele on a late-January episode of Evolve.

When asked about her dream opponent in WWE, Sterling instantly named Rhea Ripley. She distinctly pointed out the similarities between them, especially with Ripley’s shy and quiet demeanor when she first joined the WWE PC.

“She’s always been an inspiration of mine because she got to the Performance Center when she was 19, just like me and she was once shy as well. I feel like we just connect on so many levels and I see myself in her. So, it’s her development and where she is now. Over time as I develop that same way and get better, I feel like that could be a cool, little match.”

Sterling was a runner-up on LFG Season 1, mentored by Bubba Ray Dudley. And is now an active competitor on WWE Evolve.

Meanwhile, Gunther and Rhea Ripley are cited as credible talents to emerge from WWE NXT and the Performance Center. Gunther was primarily recognized for his work in NXT UK before being absorbed with the central brand in 2022.

This year, Ripley walks into her seventh WrestleMania match as she aims to dethrone Jade Cargill for the WWE Women’s Championship.

Oba Femi isn’t the only good option for a Brock Lesnar WrestleMania 42 opponent | Opinion

Last month, Brock Lesnar issued an open challenge for WWE WrestleMania 42 with rumors running rampant afterward that Oba Femi will be the man to step up.

On tonight’s WWE Raw, it’s possible that we will finally learn who will answer the challenge as Lesnar is scheduled to appear.

Femi exploded onto the main roster scene at the Royal Rumble, not only marking his debut at the event but also entering at number one. He eliminated five men before his run came to an end at the hands of Lesnar who eliminated him.

But what if Femi isn’t the pick if WWE doesn’t want to defeat either he or Lesnar right now?

Given that, here’s a few other names to consider, some longer shots than others.

Gunther

As of late, the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion has built his reputation and in-ring performance on being the “career killer.” After adding Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles to that list, it would be natural for him to target Lesnar next — another bold statement feat on his wrestling resume and one that would continue to solidify him as a ruthless heel in 2026.

They have never battled each other in singles competition despite it being teased nearly three years ago. Coincidentally, it was at the 2023 Royal Rumble where the two briefly collided in an intense exchange. Both Gunther and Lesnar have openly expressed interest in the blockbuster clash which has yet to come to fruition, but could at WrestleMania or perhaps SummerSlam if Lesnar does indeed retire in his native state of Minnesota.

Royce Keys

Keys was a dominant force in AEW for nearly six years as Powerhouse Hobbs before moving to WWE. He also made his WWE debut at the Royal Rumble this year. However, he has not made any appearances since then and has yet to make an impact. If Lesnar walks into WrestleMania 42 without knowing his opponent is, Keys could be an interesting one to answer the challenge.

Such a high-profile match could help sustain Keys’ momentum and establish him among the fanbase. Despite a potential loss in this once in a lifetime match against Lesnar, it could possibly be remembered as a career-defining moment and reveal his potential as a top star going forward.

Talla Tonga

The nearly seven foot giant has proven to be a formidable weapon for The MFTs on SmackDown. Towering over the other WWE stars, Tonga uses his size and agility with brutal strikes in the ring.

A potential match between he and Lesnar at WrestleMania 42 would be the ultimate battle of strength and supremacy. Both men possess overwhelming athleticism and power aligning with their physique which could set the stage for a first time ever encounter.

Tonga made his WWE debut at Night of Champions later year to assist Solo Sikoa in his United States Title match against Jacob Fatu. It not only established Tonga’s powerful presence but also an immense challenge for future heavyweights and anyone who dared oppose The MFTs.

Omos

While it would not be a full-fledged match, WWE could use the opportunity and capitalize on Omos’ return for WrestleMania.

Omos and Lesnar already share a history with their WrestleMania 39 showdown. The wrestling giant’s last televised match in WWE was in 2024 but since then, he has been somewhat active in dark matches in NXT and appearances in both Pro Wrestling NOAH and AAA.

His potential return at WrestleMania 42 to challenge a former rival could bode well in his re-establishment as a dominant force on the roster, even if it lasts for a few minutes.

Bron Breakker

Breakker’s meteoric rise to stardom on the main roster within a couple of years in addition to being dubbed ‘the next big thing’ would have made him the perfect rival for Lesnar. However, the uncertainty surrounding his hernia surgery recovery puts him at a disadvantage for being out of in-ring action for most of the first half of 2026.

In spite of reports on Lesnar’s WWE retirement some time this year, a bout between the two at some point is a must. It’s unlikely for WrestleMania, but would be a surprise if it happened.

Final Thoughts

Gunther would be an ideal fit to face Lesnar at WrestleMania 42. If he destroys Lesnar at WrestleMania, he could be further positioned as the prime heel in 2026, possibly joining the ranks of Roman Reigns as one of the defining villains of the decade.

As of this writing, Gunther has no feuds on his radar. And to avoid a failed boost that built momentum over the past few years, the opportunity should be seized by WWE to check off a blockbuster feud against Lesnar. Regardless of whoever would walk away with the win, the bout would leave a lasting impact and could leach to a rematch.

While Femi’s rising popularity is not to be forgotten, a push too soon for a WrestleMania clash combined with a premature loss on a stage of such grand magnitude could impact his ever-growing momentum.

Perhaps we’ll see what happens tonight.

Gunther doesn’t want wrestling character to be a ‘foreign menace’

Gunther doesn’t have any interest in playing a stereotypical pro wrestling “foreign menace.”

On a new episode of “What Do You Wanna Talk About?,” Gunther said he gets annoyed when anyone thinks of him as just being a foreign bad guy. There was a point early in his career where people wanted him to put a flag on his ring gear, but Gunther was sure to remove it as quickly as possible because he thinks pro wrestling has moved past the point where tropes like that are effective.

“No, I’m not a foreign menace. I always get a little bit annoyed because they go like, ‘Oh, he’s just a bad foreigner.’ I try to avoid everything that has to do with a flag or something,” Gunther said. “I mean, they put it on my trunks when I started out. They really wanted to have the flag on my — whatever, I got rid of it as soon as I could because it just doesn’t do anything. It’s not 1990 anymore. And I think today it’s about the person.”

Stereotypes like this might have had more of an impact in the 1980s, but Gunther feels like the United States is such a diverse place now and people from other countries are everywhere.

“I feel like now America is such a diverse country and stuff like that. I don’t know, depending where you’re at, but we had a place up, like, in the Northeast a little bit or something. I barely met an American person there,” he said. “There’s always somebody from somewhere else. It’s such a diverse place, I think.

“It doesn’t matter where you’re born in the world. Home will always be home. And nothing will ever be able to replace it. It does not matter. Even if you come up in a country that’s poor and you didn’t have a good upbringing or something, that feeling of home, nothing can replace that.”

Gunther is originally from Austria and spent much of his early wrestling days in Germany. Since joining WWE, he’s relocated to the United States. He’s accomplished a lot in his WWE career so far, including World Championship reigns and retiring legends like Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles. His goal is to keep growing as a performer while taking on more and more responsibilities.

Gunther thinks ‘underratedly charismatic’ Ludwig Kaiser would be a great actor

Gunther believes his “best friend” Ludwig Kaiser has huge potential both in and out of the ring.

The Ring General praised Kaiser on the latest episode of “What Do You Wanna Talk About?,” calling him underratedly charismatic and a very talented person. He thinks Kaiser could use those talents outside of wrestling and pursue opportunities in Hollywood.

“Yeah, 100 percent,” Gunther responded when Cody Rhodes asked if he thinks Kaiser is capable of big things. “I think he’s underratedly charismatic and he’s a really good talker. Like, I always tell him, it’s like, you need to go to Hollywood at some point, because he’s got something for the whole acting thing. Like, I always tell him, I think he would have been an amazing, like, theater actor or something like that. Because he’s very talented with languages, too.

“So, yeah, very, very, very talented person. When it comes to the wrestling side, yeah, of course.”

Though Rhodes does not know Kaiser that well personally, he loves watching Kaiser perform and agreed with Gunther that he has big potential in WWE.

Gunther said Kaiser is someone who is good at keeping him grounded and putting things in perspective. Outside of his friendship with Kaiser, Paul Heyman has given Gunther good advice on the big picture of pro wrestling.

Kaiser and Gunther were formerly stablemates in Imperium. They are not aligned on-screen anymore with Kaiser playing the character El Grande Americano and feuding with the original El Grande Americano (Chad Gable). Kaiser also regularly competes in Lucha Libre AAA with his Americano gimmick.

Gunther on his WWE goals, if he sees himself as best wrestler in the world

Taking on more and more responsibilities is Gunther’s biggest goal for his WWE career.

During the latest episode of “What Do You Wanna Talk About?,” Cody Rhodes asked Gunther if he knows what he wants to achieve next in WWE. The Ring General explained that he doesn’t keep a traditional list of goals. He just wants to keep growing and conquer the next situation that’s put in front of him.

“Yeah, but not in the sense of like I never had that list of ‘That’s what I want to achieve, I want to win this’ or whatever. It’s more like, I don’t know, I always kind of want to grow in the responsibility I can take on, if that makes sense. I feel like that’s what kind of drives me, where it’s like, ‘Okay, I’ve mastered this very difficult situation. Okay, now I can master something even more difficult.’ I see it kind of like in that sense. And I guess in our world that automatically means like titles, big matches, and all of that.”

Gunther said wrestling is always what he’s wanted to do. Throughout his career, he’s always had fun in all of his matches, even if he wasn’t feeling great going into the bout.

Over the past year, Gunther has retired all three of Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles. He’s adopted the moniker of “Career Killer” and would like to add Brock Lesnar to that list next.

Rhodes asked Gunther if he believes himself to be the best wrestler in the world.

“See, I don’t think about that. I don’t know,” he responded before Rhodes pressed him to answer. “At least one of, It’s hard to say.”

WWE Raw live results: Elimination Chamber fallout

Date: March 2, 2026
Location: Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, IN

The Big Takeaway —

CM Punk and Roman Reigns had their latest war of words. Reigns got the last word in their first encounter, while Punk got it here. After Reigns threatened to retire Punk, Punk threatened to bury Reigns next to his father.

Also, Penta won the Intercontinental Championship.

Show Recap —

There was a full recap video of all four matches at Elimination Chamber, plus the debut of Danhausen (no crowd reaction included, of course).

CM Punk and AJ Lee, Judgment Day (minus Finn Bálor), and Gunther arrived at the arena.

They abruptly cut to Paul Heyman as he led Logan Paul and Austin Theory to the ring. Heyman wasn’t interested in starting the show the same way as always. So he gave us a talking segment. Heyman said, “I hate to piss on everyone’s parade, but excuse me while I whip this out. We are here to talk about Seth freakin’ Rollins.”

Heyman hated Rollins and his song. He said Rollins stole the credit for co-founding the Vision. He stole the credit for co-founding the Shield. He didn’t deserve credit for the Shield, but that wasn’t Heyman’s problem. Rollins stole the Elimination Chamber and the WrestleMania main event from Logan Paul.

Heyman said Rollins thieved oxygen from every human being on the planet that was worthy of living, and Mr. Lynch (Rollins) was not one of them. They planned on stomping Rollins’ ass the next time he stepped into a ring. That wasn’t a spoiler—that was a personal guarantee from the Vision.

Theory grabbed the mic to cut a useless promo. Fans drowned him out with “You suck” chants, and he responded, “Rollins ain’t in the ring right now, so you can’t chant that,” which is not a good comeback. Paul was pissed because he had eliminated three people in the Chamber, and the last person to do that was Brock Lesnar.

Paul called out Rollins, but he got Adam Pearce, who was not interested in hearing them complain. Pearce also accused them of taking out Jey Uso last week. Heyman didn’t appreciate that. Heyman remarked about Rollins, but Pearce said he would deal with Rollins personally because he wasn’t cleared to compete.

If you thought they were done with the masked men, you were wrong. Three different masked men appeared in the crowd, and they were chased away by the two idiots, Theory and Paul, as well as Pearce’s security.

That left Heyman alone in the ring. A fourth masked man appeared in the aisle, now abandoned by Pearce, who also fell for Rollins’ trick. Heyman pleaded with him as a fifth masked man appeared behind Heyman.

Rollins unmasked and hit Heyman in the back with a steel chair (like he did to Roman Reigns). Rollins curb stomped Heyman as the crowd went wild. Rollins left through the crowd as medical staff checked on Heyman.

Heyman was dragged away during a break, and his face was covered in fake blood. After the break, Theory and Paul ran to check on Heyman as he was being loaded into an ambulance. Paul left to get their car while Theory remained.

Theory wanted the ambulance to leave, but it didn’t. Theory checked on an SUV that pulled up, thinking it was Paul, but it was actually Jimmy Uso. Jimmy punched Theory and tossed him into some equipment boxes. Jimmy checked on the ambulance driver, who was LA Knight. Knight said he’d take great care of Heyman, and he drove off.

Gunther vs. Dragon Lee

Dragon Lee attacked Gunther from behind during his entrance. He blindsided Gunther a few weeks ago, got beaten up, and it happened again here. Gunther fought him off and gave him a back body drop into the timekeeper’s area.

The match started during a break, and Gunther dominated throughout the break, when they came back from break, and through a second break. (Dragon got a brief flash of offence, but Gunther blocked his dive attempt and cut him down with a chop.)

Dragon fired back in time from them to return from break. He hit an enziguri and a low dropkick, but Gunther cut him off with a powerslam and hit two consecutive powerbombs. Gunther covered Lee and had it won, but lifted him up at the two count.

Gunther rolled Lee outside the ring before powerbombing him into the edge of the ring and onto the announce table. Gunther could have taken a count-out win, but he left the ring to try another powerbomb, but Lee countered into a sunset flip. Lee followed with a suicide dive and Operation Dragon.

Lee almost won by count-out, but Gunther slipped back in at nine. Lee managed to drop Gunther with a clothesline (after trying unsuccessfully a few times earlier).

Lee fired up and went for Operation Dragon again, but Gunther caught him in a sleeper. As they started going down to the mat, Gunther ripped Lee’s mask off (and you could see his face for a split second). Lee immediately tapped out as a result.

Match result: Gunther defeated Dragon Lee (14:19)

This was pretty fun by the end. Dragon Lee firing back after getting powerbombed on the apron and the table was a bit much, though. The crowd was into this, and it already seems like a much better crowd than they’ve had the past few weeks.

********

Asuka admonished Kairi Sane backstage until Sane was stunned into silence. AJ Lee walked by and checked on Sane, who was frozen and staring out into space until Asuka called her away. AJ made her way to the ring.

AJ Lee segment

Lee said she wasn’t sure how they got here. She returned to snatch the pretty hair off Becky Lynch’s big-ass head, but she wound up snatching her title. There was a modest, “You deserve it” chant.

She said the fans thought she could still go. They believed in her and had her back for a decade. They remembered her when some people wished that they would forget. They made her believe that she could still fight the very best.

That’s exactly what Lynch was. She was the best of the best, but Lee beat her. Lynch gave her the fight of her life—and she had the scars to prove it—but she proved to herself she could still be championship material. She was still who she thought she was. But now that “Becky boo-boo” was behind her, WrestleMania was ahead of her.

She wanted to be a fighting champion. It’s been 12 years since she won a title, and she wouldn’t waste any time. She called on anyone who wanted a shot because she planned on defending the Intercontinental Championship the next time she stepped into the ring.

The Original El Grande Americano (Chad Gable) wished Penta luck on his IC title match, but said he’d be first in line for a title match if he won. Penta was cool with this.

El Grande Americano (Ludwig Kaiser) and the other two confronted the Original after Penta left. Kaiser referenced their upcoming match on the next AAA show on March 14th. Gable wanted to fight tonight, but would gladly face Bravo or Rayo instead.

Liv Morgan promo

Liv Morgan cut a pre-taped promo on Stephanie Vaquer. She said Vaquer didn’t know anything about her or her struggles. But Vaquer was right about her being privileged. She got signed to WWE when she was 20 years old, while Vaquer was rejected in her first tryout. She had the best of the best, while Vaquer grew up with mud hut wrestling in flea-infested rings. That all happened because Morgan was a star.

Morgan didn’t dwell on her past as Vaquer did. Despite everything that’s happened, she sees some of herself in Vaquer. She was hard-working, talented, and a great champion. So Morgan would give her something at WrestleMania—the privilege of facing the Liv Morgan.

Original El Grande Americano vs. Rayo Americano (w/ El Grande Americano & Bravo Americano)

Gable Americano had control until a Kaiser Americano distraction allowed Rayo to hit a dive and take control through a break. Gable fought back in time for them to return from break. Gable tried ripping off the masks of Bravo and Rayo, but the distractions allowed Kaiser to hit a headbutt. Rayo followed with a running headbutt and a diving headbutt for a nearfall.

More distractions and more interference led to a schoolboy and nearfall for Bravo. Gable came back with a Chaos Theory suplex for the pinfall win.

Match result: Original El Grande Americano defeated Rayo Americano (10:10)

It’s about time they move on from this gimmick for Gable. I know Kaiser has a good thing going in AAA, but the American crowds aren’t into this anymore, and Gable in particular feels miscast. Not to mention the other two guys.

Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez played darts backstage. Morgan suggested that Rodriguez challenge AJ Lee for the IC title, win the belt, and go into Mania as champion. Rodriguez liked that idea (and acted like she never thought of this).

Dominik Mysterio was stressed out about his title defence. JD McDonagh said they had his back. Finn Bálor entered the room. He wasn’t happy about the result on Saturday, but he was at peace with it.

Dom said they could now focus on his title match. Bálor said this was something he had to do on his own, like he said last week. Dom simply meant that he wanted to celebrate with them post-match. Bálor said they could count on him to celebrate together.

Rusev and Oba Femi segment

After a clip of Oba Femi beating The Miz on SmackDown, Rusev marched out through the crowd and stood on the announce desk. Rusev was tired of hearing about Femi and called him out for a fight right now.

Femi entered the ring and told Rusev to join him. They traded right hands, and Femi got the better of it, but Rusev avoided a chokeslam and hit consecutive kicks. Femi dropped him with a chokeslam anyway and clotheslined him out of the ring.

Bayley and Lyra Valkyria spoke backstage. They had one of those conversations that makes you wonder if they ever talk outside of the show. Bayley was frustrated that they both missed out on the Chamber, and she felt stuck.

Valkyria didn’t want to see Bayley miss Mania again. She suggested that Bayley go after AJ Lee and her title. Like Rodriguez earlier, Bayley somehow never thought of this idea. Valkyria told Bayley to go talk to Pearce and get a title match. Bayley was about to leave, but she recalled costing Valkyria her IC shot with Lynch, so she invited Valkyria to join her.

Bayley and Valkyria walked to Pearce’s office, which happened to be around the corner. Iyo Sky left his office the moment they arrived, and she was not in a good mood.

Jimmy Uso vs. Austin Theory

This ended quickly by DQ. Jimmy set up Theory for a splash through the table, but turned his attention to Paul, who slipped into the ring. Jimmy attacked Paul as the referee watched. Theory tried to save Paul but was tackled by Jimmy, and the referee finally called for a DQ when Paul attacked Jimmy from behind.

— The Vision hammered away on Jimmy until Jey Uso’s music hit. Jey appeared from behind (like Rollins earlier) and slid a crutch to Jimmy. They attacked Paul and Theory with crutches and laid out Theory with a 1D.

Match result: Jimmy Uso defeated Austin Theory via disqualification (2:41)

They don’t want Theory to lose, but they’re afraid to have him beat anybody.

Danhausen approached Pearce backstage. (He only received a modest pop, but at least he wasn’t booed.) Danhausen said he debuted to thunderous applause, so he had a list of demands written on a napkin. He wanted a blimp, his face on all the trucks, a Hall of Fame induction this year, a personal assistant, and a Triple H pointing photo. Pearce asked why the napkin was soggy. Danhausen said it fell in the toilet.

Judgment Day walked by, and Pearce took the opportunity to bail so they could deal with Danhausen instead. Danhausan was happy to see them, but didn’t know McDonagh’s name. Danhausen also liked the look of Dom’s IC title belt.

Danhausen cursed Dom, and they laughed him off. But when they turned their attention back to Danhausen, he was gone.

Rhea Ripley interview

Jackie Redmond interviewed Rhea Ripley, accompanied by Iyo Sky, on the stage. Ripley said it’s been a whirlwind couple of days. Losing the tag titles on SmackDown sucked. It especially sucked because Sky meant a lot to her, including being her best friend. Ripley thanked her for always being there for her and pulling her out of a dark situation.

Sky said Ripley did the same for her. Sky said Ripley won the Chamber and showed everyone why Mami was always on top. Sky told Ripley she would be fine on Raw and told Ripley to go handle her business and win the title at WrestleMania. They hugged. (In fact, they held each other the entire segment until the end.) Ripley said she would win the title for Sky.

Ripley told Sky to hold down Raw because she was headed to SmackDown on Friday to see Jade Cargill face-to-face, and at WrestleMania, she would leave as champion. Sky leaped into Ripley’s arms.

Intercontinental Championship: Dominik Mysterio (c) (w/ Finn Bálor & JD McDonagh) vs. Penta

Penta hit a flip dive, and they went to break one minute into the match. (I wish I kept track of how many times that’s happened in a Penta match.) Bálor and McDonagh watched peacefully while seated at ringside. Penta took too much time staring them down, which allowed Dom to take over. Even Michael Cole noted this was Penta’s own fault.

Dom cut off Penta’s comeback attempt after a break and hit an Edge-o-matic. (Cole had a new name for it, but I’m not sure what he said.) Dom went for three amigos, but Penta countered the last suplex into one of his own. Dom cut him off again, this time with a DDT onto the apron. After Dom used a dive to take out Penta outside the ring, Dom also hit a running crossbody, sending them both over the barricade and into the timekeeper’s area. (Cole said Penta was once again staring over at Bálor and JD as this happened.)

During a break, Dom tied Penta’s mask to the bottom rope and stomped away at him. (For whatever reason, they always seem to do this spot to Penta, and sometimes Dargon Lee, only during commercial breaks. It’s happened multiple times.)

Penta fought back in time for them to return from break (again). Penta hit a superkick with Dom trapped upside down in the corner, followed by a backstabber for two. Penta went for a Destroyer, but Dom countered into a Michinoku Driver for two.

Dom went for a frog splash, but Penta blocked it and snapped his arm, followed by a Penta Driver for a close nearfall. A frustrated Penta repeatedly booted Dom in the corner until the referee made him stop. Penta tried driving Dom into the corner, but Dom ducked, and Penta went shoulder-first into the post.

Penta sold like he was hurt, so the ref checked on him as Dom told McDonagh to grab the ring bell hammer. McDonagh grabbed it, but Bálor stopped him, and the fans cheered. As McDonagh and Bálor argued, Penta wiped them out with a dive.

Back in the ring, Penta set up a Destroyer, but Dom tripped him onto the middle rope. However, Penta ducked a 619 and hit a Canadian Destroyer for the pinfall win. Penta is the new champion. The crowd was happy.

— Penta posed with his new belt as fireworks went off.

Match result: Penta defeated Dominik Mysterio (16:24)

This was the right call here. Penta was long overdue for a win like this, and frankly, Dom isn’t much of a champion.

Roman Reigns and CM Punk main event segment

Roman Reigns entered. He told Indianapolis to acknowledge him. They did. Before he could say anything else, CM Punk entered. They both got big reactions.

Punk asked why Reigns why he was mean-mugging him. Punk was just feeding his ego and acknowledging him. Punk hoped Reigns would say more than “acknowledge me” because they pay a lot of money for one of Reigns’ dates, and that could’ve been a tweet.

Reigns asked “Phil” if his tweet (following Elimination Chamber) hurt his feelings because, for a champion, Punk had thin skin.

Punk said the tweet didn’t hurt his feelings. He didn’t care what people tweeted. He didn’t hold grudges about what people said about him on podcasts (like Reigns did). Reigns’ tweet was accurate, though, because Punk was tired. It was a good thing Punk had bags under his eyes because he had to carry Reigns’ bullshit all the way to WrestleMania.

Punk said they had history here in Indianapolis. This was where the Shield debuted and where Punk brought him to the dance. Reigns corrected him because Punk only brought in the other two, not him.

Punk said they remembered things differently. But if Punk didn’t pick him, Reigns certainly picked Punk for the main event of WrestleMania. If you ask the fans, they’d tell you he (Punk) already won. The last time they were face-to-face, Reigns told him that he hated him. Now, Punk said, “I got you right where I want you. I made you this emotional lady.” (An odd thing to say, but not the first time Punk’s had a line like that.) Punk said he was in Reigns’ head—as empty as it was.

Reigns reiterated that he hated Phil. But if he didn’t have the title, Phil wouldn’t even be on his radar. Reigns said we brought Phil back to entertain the 30- to 40-year-old virgins who lived with their parents. To sell a few t-shirts and maybe draw a house in Chicago. But not to be the champion. That was too much responsibility and power for Punk. It was above his paygrade.

Reigns said we can’t trust Phil because he is a liar. He lied to the people. He has them thinking that he was having a good time, that he was a leader, that he was smiling as he made every town, hanging out with his cousins (the Usos). But we knew the truth. His cousins told him all about Phil’s bitching and moaning. He wasn’t CM Punk—he was just a punk-ass bitch.

Reigns would end Punk’s backup plan (his WWE return) at WrestleMania. After taking his title, Reigns would put him on a John Cena retirement tour. They would make as much money off Punk as they could until they sent him to NXT, where Punk would teach the next generation until they sent them to the main roster so the Tribal Chief could snatch everyone of them.

Reigns was about to leave, but Punk pulled him back. Punk said they weren’t done. Punk wondered who Reigns meant when he kept saying “we” because he was all alone. Alone on his bus, alone in his room. His cousins weren’t with him. The Shield couldn’t help him. The wiseman was gone because Punk took him away. This all illustrated Reigns’ entire career: “You chasing me.”

Punk was the champion, and Reigns was in the main event because Punk was in the main event. This was Punk’s show. He was in the locker room and hanging out with the Usos while Reigns was alone. Reigns could hate him all he wanted, but Reigns would not disrespect him.

Punk took particular offence to Reigns saying he would retire him. Because now, Punk said, he wouldn’t just beat Reigns at Mania, he’d bury him. “And then you won’t be all alone anymore because I’m going to bury you next to your father.”

Punk slammed the mic down and left as Reigns was left speechless.

Gunther wants to retire Brock Lesnar from WWE

After retiring Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles over the past year, Gunther would like to add Brock Lesnar to that list.

There are rumors that Lesnar could be retiring at SummerSlam this August with the show taking place in his former home state of Minnesota. There’s no word yet on who Lesnar’s opponent would be if those rumors prove to be true, but Gunther sounds interested in the matchup.

Gunther, appearing on The Morning Shift in Atlanta ahead of tonight’s Raw, was asked whose career he plans on ending next. When the host mentioned Lesnar’s name, Gunther agreed that it would be a good idea.

“That’s a good one, right?,” Gunther responded. “So, yeah, we’ll see. I think there’s a bunch of examples of people that overstay their welcome. That just hang on a little bit too much, that just chase one moment too much, maybe. It feels like there is a big amount of people to choose from.”

A Gunther vs. Lesnar match would be their first time ever facing each other one-on-one. Gunther has wanted the matchup for a while, seeing Lesnar as his “final boss.”

Gunther defeated Styles at the Royal Rumble last month to end his career, though Styles has not completely closed the door on returning in the future if the right circumstances emerge. Tonight’s Raw in Atlanta is set to feature a tribute to Styles. An appearance by Lesnar is also part of the announced lineup for the episode.

On The Morning Shift, Gunther addressed whether he plans to get involved in the Styles tribute segment.

“I don’t know what I’m doing with it now at the moment, to be honest,” Gunther said. “Obviously I could stay away from it, because why would I involve myself? [But] it’s tempting to try and ruin it, so we’ll see.”
