TKO exec says ‘there will always be periodic fan dissatisfaction’ around WWE creative execution

During Wednesday’s investors call to discuss the robust TKO financials from the first quarter of the year, company head Mark Shapiro both acknowledged and went on the offensive around the narrative regarding creative around WWE WrestleMania 42.

Shapiro addressed that narrative and discussion during his portion of pre-recorded remarks on the call, followed by a question later in the Q&A portion where he went further into his thoughts.

In the pre-recorded portion, he said TKO has fielded investor questions “about WWE demand and the state of creative, driven by online commentary and the year-over-year WrestleMania ticket sales performance,” saying they weren’t concerned about the sales as it was “unrealistic” to expect WrestleMania 42 to surpass what 41 did.

“As it relates to the creative, there will always be periodic fan dissatisfaction around creative execution, commercial load, and celebrity usage. We listen to all the feedback. We do not turn a deaf ear, but these are not new criticisms,” he said.

During the call, he did not mention, nor was he asked, about how the ticket sales story was brought into WWE creative by Pat McAfee who was one of the celebrities grumbled about on social media.

Later on the the call when asked about creative again, Shapiro said, “We take any and all feedback, especially from our core fanbase….extremely serious, high priority. We listen, we learn. At the same time, balancing the fan experience…with the business of sports is never easy whether you’re talking ticket prices or commercial integration. It’s as old as time and crosses genres.”

At last month’s WrestleMania 42, fans watching at home were deluged with ads throughout both nights of the broadcast, amplified by frustrations with match time.

Shapiro made comparisons about rising prices at the movies, increasing ads on ESPN from one to two minutes on SportsCenter, NBA sponsorship patches, naming rights on the Dodgers Stadium field, and ad breaks for major sports events as things fans have complained about in the past and eventually, learned to live with.

“Change takes getting used to,” he said, adding that WWE is “truly new to commercial integration and sponsorship” and that “change will be more glaring for some as we inevitably commercially integrate.”

He said there will be trial and error with their approach and that they have experimented thus far, pushing boundaries with some events while pulling back from others. He reiterated that with WWE or UFC, “our product comes first” and that marketers want to reach their young, unique, hard to reach and super passionate fan base.

“Remember this: our audience is resilient. We don’t take it for granted. It doesn’t mean we can do whatever we want to do, absolutely not, quite the contrary. But, it is resilient. Currently, we are experiencing record attendance, record viewership, and record engagement,” he said.

Shapiro, someone who appears frequently at major events and is a public face for the company, earned $42.6 million in 2025, according to public records.

WWE reportedly not ending celebrity involvement ‘anytime soon’

A new report states that WWE won’t be ending its focus on celebrity involvement anytime soon.

On Sunday, Fightful Select reported that WWE sources said the company is “extremely happy” with all the celebrity performances at WrestleMania 42.

The outlet also reported that WWE sources said celebrity involvement won’t be stopping anytime soon. While the amount of celebrity involvement after WrestleMania is expected to decrease, there are plans for additional celebrities to be involved in WWE programming in the future, including this summer.

The report also notes that Tom Brady was contacted regarding possible involvement with the company, but it’s unclear why that didn’t lead to anything.

Celebrities in WWE at WrestleMania 42

Jelly Roll, IShowSpeed, Lil Yachty, and Pat McAfee all had roles at WWE WrestleMania 42. Yachty appeared on the post-WrestleMania SmackDown as well, where he was attacked by Sami Zayn while Zayn was dressed as the Gingerbread Man. Trick Williams said on last Friday’s show that he did not know if Yachty would be okay.

Report: Ted DiBiase Jr. was never considered for the Randy Orton-Cody Rhodes WWE WrestleMania feud

Long rumored to be a part of Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes’ WWE WrestleMania feud, a recent report revealed that Ted DiBiase Jr. was never considered for it.

At WWE WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas, Nevada, fans saw Ted DiBiase Jr. in attendance with his lawyer. Despite DiBiase Jr. being found not guilty in a fraud case, a recent report from Fightful Select revealed that he was never considered to be involved in Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania feud.

Based on DiBiase Jr’s past storyline connection to Orton and Rhodes, fans heavily speculated him to be a part of the feud. However, that did not happen, and despite him being in the stadium and filming his reactions, there were reportedly no “serious considerations” for DiBiase Jr. to get involved.

Fightful Select also reported that while DiBiase Jr. attended WrestleMania with his lawyer, he was not invited by WWE as a guest. Instead, he was in town for WrestleCon. One of Fightful’s sources speculated that he was sponsored by the water company on his shirt for a ticket.

Before WWE WrestleMania 42, Orton, while speaking to Culture Kings, revealed that he was owed $25,000 by DiBiase Jr., although the reason for this still seems missing.

Ted DiBiase Jr. opens up after acquittal

After being found not guilty on multiple charges in the fraud case, Ted DiBiase Jr. shared a statement on his social media regarding the acquittal.

“They got it right. And I give all the glory to God. I give all the credit to my lord and savior, to [my legal team]. I think they did an amazing job of portraying the truth,” DiBiase said. “Seven years of being slandered and made to be something that is completely false has about torn my family apart, but we’re strong. And I’ve had so many friends and so much family that have come around us. And I’m proud that we’ve walked through this. And I’m so thankful that it’s over.”

Triple H to CM Punk before WWE WrestleMania 42: ‘Thanks for the house’

WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H shared his gratitude with CM Punk before WWE WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas.

Long gone from WWE, Punk returned to the promotion in 2023 and soon rose to the top. With back-to-back WWE WrestleMania main events, a new behind-the-scenes video released by the promotion showed Triple H and Punk engaged in a deep conversation.

In a WrestleMania 42 production video shared on WWE’s socials, Triple H was seen working with the WWE Superstars on their WrestleMania entrances when he chanced upon an encounter with Punk.

Triple H met with Punk and thanked him for “the house” as they looked toward the production stage and the stadium for WWE WrestleMania 42. Moving past their previous animosity, Punk developed a new relationship with WWE’s management and returned to the promotion after almost a decade.

It’s a big f***ing deal, right? It’s because of you, man. Thanks for the house,” said Triple H. “It was a team effort, you know that. It always has been. Thank you, those are kind words,” responded Punk.

While Triple H noted that he was happy for Punk to be in WWE, the former World Champion replied, “I’m happy to be here, you know that. Thank you for the opportunity.”

Punk main-evented WWE WrestleMania 42 Night Two against Roman Reigns, where he lost his World Heavyweight Championship.

WWE considered alternate result for Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk at WrestleMania | Exclusive

Dave Meltzer addressed the main event of WrestleMania 42 night two in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Meltzer wrote that WWE had considered a different finish for the match that would have seen CM Punk defeat Roman Reigns to retain the World Heavyweight Championship. This would have led to a rematch at Backlash where Reigns would win the title.

Meltzer wrote:

“It was possible and apparently talked about that Punk could beat Reigns and then lose the title at Backlash, so they’d be ‘even’ when it was over but Reigns would end up as champion, as a way to protect Punk’s position. But the decision in the end was for Reigns to win here.”

As for the match itself, Meltzer awarded it a five-star rating. It was Punk’s fourth time receiving a five-star rating. His previous five-star matches came in 2024 against Drew McIntyre in Hell in a Cell, in 2011 against John Cena at Money in the Bank, and against Samoa Joe in Ring of Honor in 2004.

As for Reigns, this marks his first five-star match, although he has also had four matches rated four and three-quarter stars.

Meltzer wrote of the match:

“Reigns’ win over Punk was clean, and among the best matches in WrestleMania history. They went 33:56, ending when Punk had Lesnar on his back for a second GTS, and then collapsed and Reigns then pinned hi with a spear. The storyline played into the interviews, where the match was long and grueling, and Punk got old and collapsed in the deep waters.”

New details on Cody Rhodes defeating Randy Orton at WrestleMania 42 | Exclusive

Backstage chaos on the Saturday of WrestleMania 42 was described as “like WCW.”

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer addressed the decision to have Cody Rhodes defeat Randy Orton in the night one main event of WrestleMania 42 on Saturday, April 18.

Meltzer wrote that after Pat McAfee opted out of continuing with WWE, the decision not to go with Orton as champion was part of “all the chaos” taking place behind the scenes on Saturday. However, he also noted that the decision to have Rhodes win the match had been made before Saturday.

Meltzer also noted that the belief in WWE was that it wasn’t just the negativity from fans that led to McAfee opting out, but the response from WWE talent as well.

“I don’t know if he gave a reason but the belief in WWE was that he didn’t like the negativity of the fans, not the heel heat, but the negativity, plus even worse, the negativity of the angle from so much of the talent,” Meltzer wrote.

Meltzer wrote that there were WWE talent who felt Rhodes and Orton had a strong storyline dating back to Orton serving as Rhodes’ mentor in Legacy, and that McAfee and Jelly Roll being involved took away from the stronger story.

“So when (McAfee) asked out, the decision was made to go in the direction of Punk vs. Rhodes as a big match (perhaps for SummerSlam although I don’ t know that) and thus not go with Orton as champion. There were those who said the decision was part of all the chaos taking place behind-the-scenes on Saturday before the first show and the call was made the day of. However, those in the know, confirmed the chaos, even saying it was like WCW, but we were told the decision to go with Rhodes over Orton was made prior to the day of the show.”

Punk and Rhodes were involved in an angle on Raw this past Monday, teasing a possible title match between the two.

John Cena is teasing that he will have a role at WWE Backlash.

The PLE takes place on Saturday, May 9 at the Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida.

Cena, who turned 49 years old on Thursday, posted to social media saying he has promised Club WWE something special and is going to try to do “something epic” on the show.

Alas, the years pass. I am still gonna try to do something epic in Tampa for 5/9. I promised Club WWE something special… stay tuned.”

No matches have been announced so far for Backlash. However, our own Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that before the decision was made to drop the Pat McAfee storyline, McAfee and Randy Orton were scheduled to team against Jelly Roll and Cody Rhodes. With McAfee opting out of continuing with WWE, the match is no longer expected to take place.

Cena’s full post is available below. The post he is responding to incorrectly lists his age as 45.

Ric Flair clarifies comments on Charlotte Flair’s WWE WrestleMania 42 match

Ric Flair has released a statement regarding the interview he gave to Ariel Helwani on Wednesday.

During his appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Flair said he did not enjoy his daughter Charlotte Flair’s match at WrestleMania 42, noting that he believes she should be a singles wrestler. Charlotte Flair teamed with Alexa Bliss in the four-way women’s tag team title match on the show.

Flair’s statement on Thursday reads:

“I Want To Make Something Very Clear To Everyone After Yesterday’s Podcast With @arielhelwani. Number One- I’m More Than Thrilled To See @MsCharlotteWWE Wrestling With Her Friend @AlexaBliss_WWE. I’ve Never Seen Her Happier! So Let’s Clear That Up!

Number Two- I Enjoyed Her In Singles Matches Because I Feel Like She Is Able To Put More Of Her Talent On Display.

Number Three- No One Will Ever Criticize Or Make Any Attempt To Judge My Daughters Or Say Anything About Them.

Number Four- I Wish We Could All Just Put Everything Behind Us, And Please Don’t Report Something On Me Unless It’s 100% True.

Thank You! May We All Continue To Be Successful, And For So Many Of Us As We Grow Older, There May Be No Tomorrow. May Peace And Friendship Be With Us All. Let’s Go Back To Being The Brotherhood That We Were. That Was So Sacred At One Time!

Flair’s interview with Helwani also made headlines for comments he made regarding not being permitted to attend WrestleManias in recent years. Flair stated that prior to WrestleMania 41, he contacted Tiffany Stratton’s then-boyfriend Ludwig Kaiser and threatened to beat him up over comments Kaiser had made about Charlotte Flair. Flair said Kaiser then spoke with Triple H and he was not permitted to attend WrestleMania.

He also noted that Dennis Rodman asked him to induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame this year, but Flair said he never heard back from WWE regarding whether he would be allowed to do so.

Flair’s social media post is available in full below.

Jelly Roll suggests he & Pat McAfee ‘get back to what we’re good at’ following WrestleMania 42

The inclusion of Pat McAfee and Jelly Roll into the Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton WWE WrestleMania 42 program was met with mixed reaction, to say the least.

In his new vlog featuring some of the action from this past weekend, the hit musician suggested both he and the sports talk star get out of the WWE spotlight for a while and back to their respective industries.

While being driving in a golf cart backstage at Allegiant Stadium, Jelly Roll said, “I had one goal tonight and I kind of succeeded. Pat, I love you man. Neither one of us had any business here. I say we get back to what we’re good at. man, even though I’m not actually really good at anything. But you’re great at something, so go do it. I’ll keep searching for what I’m going to do when I grow up.”

The video showed him the night before backstage at SmackDown, saying hi to Damian Priest and Trick Williams before watching the show with his son and friends in a luxury box. It then moved to night one of WrestleMania with him saying hi to music producer and wrestling fan Rick Rubin and John Cena while also watching the show from a box.

The clip of him elbowing McAfee through the announcers’ table was shown followed by him joking he needed to frame the picture of him “levitating” above McAfee.

At one point, it was believed WWE was building to a Jelly Roll/Rhodes vs. McAfee/Orton match but that appears to be a no go after McAfee held to his pre-Mania word that if Orton lost, he would be gone from WWE forever.

Triple H expresses gratitude after WWE WrestleMania 42

Just days after concluding WWE WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the second time in a row, Triple H has shared a grateful message.

On social media, WWE’s Chief Content Officer, Paul Levesque, aka Triple H, shared a message expressing his gratitude to everyone involved in producing and delivering WrestleMania.

“Another historic [WrestleMania] in the record books, another opportunity to say THANK YOU to our performers, staff, and crew who make this event the spectacle it has become. No one does it alone.

He finished his message by stating WWE’s International presence and beginning the countdown for WrestleMania 43 in Saudi Arabia.

“Grateful to our fans who bring their energy and passion to wherever [WWE] goes around the globe – we are nothing without you. The countdown to [WrestleMania] 43 begins…”

Retired from in-ring action, Triple H has mostly maintained a backstage presence for the past few WrestleManias. His wife, Stephanie McMahon, was also inducted into the 2026 WWE Hall of Fame.

Why Ric Flair did not like Charlotte Flair’s WWE WrestleMania 42 match

Wrestling veteran Ric Flair was not fond of Charlotte Flair’s WWE WrestleMania 42 match on Night One.

At WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas, Charlotte Flair teamed with her tag team partner, Alexa Bliss, in the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship match against Lash Legend, Nia Jax, Brie Bella, and Paige.

Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Flair was asked about his thoughts on his daughter’s WrestleMania 42 match. Flair opened up and revealed that he did not like the match and pitched his daughter’s return to singles competition.

“I didn’t like her match at all, and I think that Ashley [Charlotte Flair] needs to be [a singles wrestler], and I know she enjoys her relationship with Alexa, but if Ashley is not in a title picture right now, in my life and as a spectator, without her in the main event in a singles match.

The match she had with Rhea Ripley two years ago, they’ve never had a match like that ever in the history of women’s wrestling, and Rhea’s getting gold as well, I’m putting them both over,” he added.

At WrestleMania 42, Paige returned and replaced the injured Nikki Bella. She and Brie Bella later finished the match by securing the titles.

WWE WrestleMania 42 site fee, contract details revealed in new public documents

Even with fewer ticket sales, WWE’s site fee from Las Vegas for this year’s WrestleMania 42 and accompanying events grew from what they took in from WrestleMania 41.

Revealed in public documents received by Post Wrestling’s Brandon Thurston, WWE will take in $6 million from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, an increase from the $5 million they received for bringing WrestleMania 41 to Las Vegas. It’s termed a sponsor fee in their contract which included WrestleMania 32 and a minimum of 300,000 square feet of convention space for WWE World and their on-site merchandise store.

That will put WWE’s total take at over $10.3 million in incentives as the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development has already approved over $4.3 million in tax credits. The LVCVA got visibility on WrestleMania ads, involvement in press & promotional events, a suite for both nights, ten daily tickets to WWE World, and 20 lower level tickets for Raw, SmackDown and NXT (even though NXT didn’t take place in Las Vegas during the week).

WWE has already touted the business success of the weekend, but did not reveal a total revenue number, only saying it was among the highest-grossing events in WWE history.

WWE touts business success of WrestleMania 42

TKO has issued its annual press release touting the business success of WWE WrestleMania weekend.

Though down from recent heights, TKO says WrestleMania 42 was still among the highest-grossing events in company history. A gate figure was not provided, but the press release claims an attendance of 106,072 across the two nights. That’s down from the attendance number of 124,693 that WWE self-reported for WrestleMania 41 last year.

Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas hosted both WrestleMania 41 and 42. Returning to the same city so soon is likely one of the reasons for the year-over-year attendance drop, with high ticket prices also playing a factor. WWE President Nick Khan, when asked about there being a downtick in business metrics, said the decreases are small and pointed to how WWE has focused on building for the future over the past year.

In the press release, TKO said WrestleMania 42 had record or near-record performances in sponsorship, merchandise, and digital metrics:

  • WrestleMania 42 featured a record 32 marketing partners, including Snickers, 2K, Riyadh Season, Ram, DoorDash, Wingstop, Wheatley American Vodka, Minute Maid, The General Insurance, PepsiCo’s MUG Root Beer and Chumba Casino.
  • At WWE World, a five-day interactive fan experience in partnership with Fanatics, paid experience sales reached all-time highs. WWE World also featured a lounge for attendees who signed up for Club WWE, the recently announced Gold membership experience for fans.
  • Additionally, WrestleMania 42 set a new digital record, generating more than 1.3 billion views across all social platforms – up 18 percent from the record set at WrestleMania 41.

This was the first time WrestleMania aired on the ESPN app (in the United States). The first hour of each night was also simulcast on television. Full viewership is not available, but the press release highlighted the success of those TV simulcasts:

  • WrestleMania Saturday was the most-viewed telecast of the year on ESPN2, while WrestleMania Sunday was the most-viewed telecast of the entire weekend on ESPN.

WrestleMania won’t be back in the United States until at least 2028, with Saudi Arabia set to host WrestleMania 43 next year.
