Kurt Angle on working with Hulk Hogan & Eric Bischoff: ‘They bring nothing but good’

Kurt Angle is excited to work with Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff again, this time outside of the professional wrestling world.

It was announced last week that Angle has joined Hogan and Bischoff’s Real American Freestyle organization as a commentator and analyst. He’ll be part of the broadcast team for the organization’s inaugural event on August 30 working alongside combat sports veterans Chael Sonnen and Bubba Jenkins.

In an interview with TMZ Sports to promote the new group, Angle discussed linking back up with Hogan and Bischoff.

“It’ll be like it was in TNA and WWE. You know, I worked with these guys for years,” the 56-year-old Angle said. “I understand their philosophies and what they bring to the table, and they bring nothing but good. They’re going to be able to make this a little more entertaining than a regular amateur wrestling duel would be.”

The Wolstein Center in Cleveland is hosting Real American Freestyle’s August 30 event. It was announced today that the organization has reached a deal with Fox Nation to broadcast the show.

Hogan and Bischoff have partnered with amateur wrestling coach Izzy Martinez for this venture. Angle — a legend in both amateur and pro wrestling — told TMZ Sports that one of the things that drew him to Real American Freestyle is that the promotion has signed the top Olympic-style wrestlers available and will have the best of the best on display.

Angle believes that, if something like this existed when he was younger, he might have never even entered pro wrestling.

“Oh gosh, I would have loved to have had this. This would have been my thing,” he said. You know, I don’t even know if I would have crossed over into pro wrestling. I probably would have stuck with amateur wrestling. We didn’t have a pro league back then. So I’m a little jealous, but I’m also excited to be a part of it.”

Real American Freestyle reveals its exclusive broadcast partner

Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff’s Real American Freestyle (RAF) has announced its exclusive broadcast partner.

On Monday, the promotion revealed that its debut event, RAF 01, will air on Fox Nation on August 30.

“Real American Freestyle is creating something that’s never been done before, and we needed a partner that understood that and could build with us,” said RAF commissioner Hulk Hogan. “FOX Nation is synergistic with our brand, they appreciate the importance of bringing this sport to the masses, and they believe in our goal.”

The broadcast team is set to consist of Kurt Angle, Chael Sonnen, and Bubba Jenkins. Angle was quoted in a Fox press release on the news:

“I grew up freestyle wrestling and achieved the highest level of success in the sport,” Angle said. “I couldn’t be prouder to support athletes at all levels of their careers and partner with Real American Freestyle to make it happen. Chael and Bubba will bring a unique aspect to their analysis given their own backgrounds in combat sports, and I’m excited to join them for RAF 01 to bring freestyle wrestling to audiences around the world.”

Fox Nation president Lauren Petterson was also quoted in the release:

“We’re thrilled to partner with the Real American Freestyle team as they build a visionary brand that redefines the future of wrestling. Fusing elite athleticism with unmatched entertainment, it’s an honor to be part of the new era of the world’s oldest and most iconic sport.”

RAF 1 will be held in Cleveland’s Wolstein Center on the campus of Cleveland State University. The venue holds over 13,000 for basketball and approximately 15,000 for concerts. As of Friday’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, 639 tickets had been distributed to the show.

Six matches are advertised for the show:

RAF 01 lineup for August 30:

  • Bo Nickal vs. Jacob Cardenas
  • Yianni Diakomihalis vs. Bajrang Punia
  • Darrion Caldwell vs. Real Woods
  • Austin Gomez vs. Lance Palmer
  • Kennedy Blades vs. Alejandra Rivera
  • Sarah Hildebrandt vs. Zeltzin Hernandez

Kurt Angle joins Hulk Hogan & Eric Bischoff’s freestyle wrestling venture

Kurt Angle is linking up with Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff to play a role in their new freestyle wrestling venture.

It was announced today that Angle — a Hall of Famer in both amateur and pro wrestling — “will serve as live event commentator, analyst, and partner” for Real American Freestyle Wrestling, calling the promotion’s inaugural show alongside combat sports greats Chael Sonnen and Bubba Jenkins. The event is set to take place in Cleveland on August 30.

“I grew up freestyle wrestling, and achieved the highest level of success in the sport. I couldn’t be prouder to support athletes at all levels of their careers and partner with Real American Freestyle to make it happen,” the Olympic gold medalist said in a press release. “Chael and Bubba will bring a unique aspect to their analysis given their own backgrounds in combat sports, and I’m excited to join them for RAF01 to bring freestyle wrestling to audiences around the world.”

The formation of Real American Freestyle was announced this April with Hogan, Bischoff, and wrestling coach Izzy Martinez leading the venture. The Wolstein Center in Cleveland is hosting the August 30 event.

“Kurt Angle is a living legend. He’s achieved every accomplishment he could in wrestling, so it makes sense that he’s partnering with Real American Freestyle as we actively change the name of the game across the sport,” Hogan was quoted as saying. “Kurt will provide fire, infamy, and unparalleled experience to the commentary and analysis of our live events. We couldn’t be more excited to have him on the Real American team.”

Hogan has been experiencing health issues ahead of the Real American Freestyle launch, but his wife is denying rumors that he’s in grave condition. Sky Daily Hogan said her husband has been in and out of the hospital over the past six weeks as he recovers from neck fusion surgery.

Chael Sonnen joins Hulk Hogan’s Real American Freestyle as commentator

Former UFC star and MMA commentator/podcast host Chael Sonnen is adding the new Real American Freestyle promotion to his list of jobs.

Announced by the promotion co-founded by Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff and Israel Martinez, the 48-year-old Sonnen will be a live commentator and analyst for the new group.

The group, which will be focused on traditional freestyle wrestling, will hold their first event on August 30th in Cleveland, Ohio.

Both Sonnen and Hogan walked out with Colby Covington for his December 2014 UFC fight against Joaquin Buckley.

Before moving into fighting, Sonnen was a standout amateur wrestler, earning All-American status at the University of Oregon along with being a two-time PAC-10 runner-up. He won a silver medal at the 2000 Greco-Roman World University Championships, and was a two-time Dave Schultz Memorial International Greco-Roman winner.

In his MMA career, he competed in the UFC, WEC and Bellator where he ended his career in June 2019. He also founded Submission Underground in 2016, a submission grappling promotion. Along with his YouTube channel, Sonnen is also a UFC analyst for ESPN.

Sonnen made news Wednesday for publicly apologizing to the couple he confronted in a Las Vegas hallway in December 2021 while allegedly intoxicated. After he was initially charged with battery by strangulation along with 10 misdemeanor battery charges, Sonnen pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of breaching the peace and was fined $750.

Eric Bischoff ‘confident’ Real American Freestyle will land streaming deal

Eric Bischoff says he’s confident his new venture with Hulk Hogan, Real American Freestyle, will land a broadcast deal.

Bischoff and Hogan were guests on Monday’s episode of The Ariel Helwani Show. During the interview, Bischoff was asked about where the promotion’s debut event on August 30 will air. He responded:

“As a matter of fact, as soon as we’re done with this, I have a call with a major platform that everybody would know about and recognize. We may end up there, we may not. We are going to end up on a platform on August 30th. We’re in discussions. I don’t even want to call negotiations. I’ll be really straightforward with you on this. We’re in discussions with two different platforms. Like I said, one over the next 45 minutes. I’m confident that we’re going to land a streaming opportunity and it may be a cable broadcast, but time will tell, you know.”

“I’m not concerned that we won’t have a platform. I’m only concerned with which one it will be and how it will work for us.”

Also during the conversation, Hogan and Bischoff mentioned their goal is to run one event per month. The Real American Freestyle website lists an event in Michigan for October and one in New Jersey for November, but no other details have been disclosed.

Bischoff was also asked about the status of Olympic gold medalist Kyle Snyder with the promotion. Snyder is one of 8 athletes to be featured on the RAF website. Snyder was recently revealed as one of 16 men arrested as part of a prostitution sting in Ohio earlier this month. Bischoff says they will review the matter internally.

“I just read about that about an hour ago, actually. I’ve been on the phone all morning and we’ll talk about it internally. I don’t know enough about the facts to comment on it here. Other than to say, I don’t know how old Kyle is, but as a young man or woman, once you start reaching certain levels of success in life and people know who you are, it becomes even more critical that you are careful in the way you conduct yourself, whether it’s in the business or away from the business.”

Hogan was also asked about the negative reaction he received at the WWE on Netflix premiere earlier this year. He responded that the media treats him differently than others when he’s booed.

“The last time I was in LA, I was Hollywood with the black beard and doing the bad guy thing. I can go out there and get booed in LA or The Rock can get booed in LA or John Cena gets booed in LA but when I get booed, there’s a whole different reaction media wise. For some reason I’ve laid some type of groundwork that people are still interested in what I’m doing. And so for those that are on the team and are riding with the train to the station, that’s great. For those that are the haters and still have a problem with me, there’s nothing I can do to fix that except just keep proving by my actions that I’m still in the game. I’m still pushing hard.”

“When you get booed and then you get 3.2 billion engagements, and you rock that whole world in LA with how much interaction there was on the internet, I’ll take it.”

Hogan was asked if he felt it was people booing his character rather than him personally. Hogan responded:

“All of the above. There were certain people who boo the character, there were certain WWE Superstars who had an opinion and had advice for me but I would like to ask the same guys when I go to New York or Chicago and the people cheer out of the rooftops, I would like to know what their advice is then and what their opinion is.”

“So it’s a double-edged sword and it’s always been that. It’s part of the character, it’s part of me personally, it’s part of my professional life, it’s part of my personal life, it’s all the above. And at the end of the day I’m just like an old scarred up seal with a bunch of scars on me and I’m really relatable to most normal people because a lot of people have been through a lot of stuff I have professionally.”

Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff announce Real American Freestyle Wrestling

Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff are entering the world of professional freestyle wrestling.

Earlier this week, the pair teased a new project and a mysterious “third man” who would be involved. On Wednesday, they announced Real American Freestyle Wrestling, a professional freestyle wrestling league set to launch this summer. They also revealed world-renowned wrestling coach Izzy Martinez as their mystery third man.

Real American Freestyle Wrestling will feature eight men’s weight classes and four women’s weight classes. The promotion’s first event is scheduled for August 30 in Cleveland.

Hogan says his inspiration for launching the league came from watching Wyatt Hendrickson defeat Gable Steveson to win the NCAA National Heavyweight title in March and then celebrate with the U.S. President.

“When I saw that happen and I saw our President hug him, I went, OK, we are on point, we’re ready to go and instincts have prevailed and I smell victory,” Hogan told the Associated Press. “I think we’re right on track, brother.”

Neither Steveson nor Hendrickson are currently signed to the new league, although Hogan teased a possible rematch between the two as something the company has on its radar.

“These kids are young, they’re smart. They’re watching TV. They know about branding, they know what sells. And they’ve all got that little Conor McGregor swag,” Hogan continued.

Olympic silver medalist Kennedy Blades has committed to the league. Hogan says she will be the face of the women’s division. Ben Askren and Zahid Valencia will compete on the men’s side.

Hogan says Bischoff is setting up the new league from a production standpoint.

“Eric jumped in with both feet, and he’s doing a lot to guide this ship right now, brother,” Hogan said. “He’s setting so much stuff up production wise — just moving us forward, light years ahead of where we could have been on our own.”

Martinez is a world-renowned freestyle wrestling and MMA coach and founder of the Izzy Style Wrestling training program in Illinois. He’s helped train Jon Jones for UFC fights, and was Holly Holm’s wrestling coach for her victory over Ronda Rousey at UFC 193. Martinez will serve as the league’s Chief Operating Officer. Hogan will be the league’s commissioner.

“I see this as an opportunity for me to get involved,” Hogan said, “to get back, quit sitting on the couch, to get involved with a bunch of powerful athletes that I can relate to as far as championship material, guys that are on top of their game, and I just — I couldn’t pass on it.”

Bischoff and Hogan also spoke with Forbes about the new league. According to Bischoff, RAFW will be about “World-class athletes, elite-level athletes, Olympic-level wrestlers, collegiate champions, but in a professional environment with a lot more entertainment.”

Hogan added:

“Well, I think Eric described it the best when he said if you think of The Voice. You do the backstories first, so the people care about the athletes, and you see where they started, and the injuries and what type of family background they have, and in the history package, I think that kind of sets people up to care for the athletes, like Eric said. And that’s where we’re going to begin, with the people warming up and getting to know the athletes, and then it’s up to the athletes to perform.”

Hulk Hogan & Eric Bischoff tease new project

Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff are reuniting for a new project, though concrete details about the venture are unknown.

The two posted an NWO-inspired teaser to their social media accounts on Monday morning hyping that they’re back and ready to “slice and dice the world of wrestling.” Hogan and Bischoff — longtime friends who have collaborated together in WCW, TNA, and on entertainment projects — said they have a third man who will be involved with this new endeavor.

“Should we tell them who our third man is? Should we talk about his credentials? Should we talk about all of his championships? Should we talk about the world-class athletes that he has brought to the very top of this sport? Should we talk about that? No, not yet, not yet, not yet,” Bischoff said. “But do stay tuned, because when we do announce our third man, it’s going to rock your world.”

“He’s a badass, dude,” Hogan added. “He’s a real, real badass.”

The teaser was also posted by Bischoff’s 83 Weeks podcast, which he hosts with Conrad Thompson on the Podcast Heat network.

Hogan is the co-founder of Real American Beer, which announced a partnership with WWE earlier this year. He was booed by the Los Angeles crowd while promoting Real American Beer on Raw’s Netflix debut episode in January.

Tony Khan on Eric Bischoff: ‘I don’t really care what he says’

Tony Khan doesn’t care what Eric Bischoff says.

Bischoff was a guest on The Ariel Helwani Show this week ahead of his appearances at WWE NXT on Tuesday and MLW One Shot on Thursday. During the interview, Bischoff was once again critical of AEW, as he frequently has been in recent years, saying the promotion has “no hope.”

Khan appeared on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Thursday and was asked why Bischoff has such an antagonistic relationship with AEW. Khan responded:

“I have no idea. I don’t really care what he says. We’ve done really, really well and we’ve got a great thing going with AEW. We’ve got something really, really to be proud of. We not only are going to be for years to come doing the shows on TBS and TNT, we’re going to set the record for the longest run of pro wrestling ever on TNT, in fact.”

“It’s pretty amazing because for a company that’s only five years old, we’ve accomplished so much. Like I said, we set the world record for wrestling ticket sales, and we’re just going into this new media rights deal that is historic and it hasn’t even kicked in yet.”

“Starting January 1st, every week you can watch Dynamite still on Wednesdays on TBS, but we’re going to be live streaming on Max, which is a top streaming platform, and I really think it’s the best streaming platform with the best movies and TV shows. And we’re going to have AEW every Wednesday night live streaming on Max and every Saturday night on Max in addition to TNT. So, it’s really important for us because cable is massive, it’s massive for sports and wrestling and TBS and TNT, those are staples of cable, as Eric himself knows very well but it’s really important for the future to also have a foothold in streaming. And that’s what we’re going to have now with AEW also on Max, in addition to TBS and TNT. So I think AEW is doing fantastic.”

WWE NXT drew its lowest demo number of 2024 for Tuesday’s show, which featured Bischoff’s appearance. His segment with Trick Williams and Ridge Holland averaged 612,000 viewers and 174,000 in the 18-49 demo. The show overall drew a 0.13 rating in 18-49, the lowest it has done since July 4, 2023. It averaged 593,000 viewers on The CW, down 6.2 percent from the previous week and the lowest viewership NXT has had since moving to The CW.

The final two Iron Survivor Challenge spots for Deadline will be up for grabs in last-chance qualifying matches. Cora Jade vs. Kelani Jordan vs. Jaida Parker vs. Wren Sinclair is the women’s qualifier. On the men’s side, it’s Axiom vs. Lexis King vs. Eddy Thorpe vs. Cedric Alexander.

**********

NXT is on the air with a show taped in front of a live studio audience from a sound stage the Performance Center in Orlando. Opening the show is a last chance qualifier.

On commentary is Vic Joseph and Booker T, and the ring announcer is Mike Rome. Sarah Schreiber is in the Mean Gene role doing backstage interviews.

Wren Sinclair (with Charlie Dempsey) defeated Cora Jade and Kelani Jordan and Jaida Parker in a fatal four-way match to qualify for the Women’s Iron Survivor Challenge.

Sinclair pinned Jade, thanks in large part to outside interference by Lola Vice. Jordan and Jade are also doing a program in a subplot, seemingly setting up a match between them in the near future.

Jordan got to shine with several high spots, like a quebrada off the barricade around ringside. But it was Parker in control as the show cut to its first commercial break. Parker stacks Sinclair and Jade in the ropes and Parker drops a bomb on both. Parker boasts with a dance that is shown on replay just before the show goes into the break.

They come back from the break with an awkward Tower of Doom spot, and they go into a series of near falls. They took turns breaking up the pinning attempts. Sit-out powerbombs, Swanton Bombs, Falcon Arrows, and frog splashes are just some of the big moves.

Just before they go home, Jordan does a 450 splash. Parker breaks up Jordan’s pin on Jade. In a call back to earlier in the match, Parker then goes to stack Jordan in a corner. Suddenly, Lola Vice on the apron. Vice goes to throw a spinning back fist at Parker. Ducking the back fist, Parker avoids Vice’s attack, but Sinclair is inadvertently struck by Vice’s back fist. Sinclair falls like a stone, landing on a fallen Jade. Sinclair is out, but she is in a pinning combination. The referee counts a pinfall on Jade. Meanwhile, Vice drags Parker out of the ring. Fluke win by Sinclair, but she nevertheless qualifies for the Iron Survivor Challenge at Deadline.

Sarah Schreiber interviews Eddy Thorpe in a backstage area. He has a fair chance tonight, and he vows to win. Up walks Lexis King to interrupt the interview, telling Thorpe to control his temper. King makes a wisecrack about Thorpe being a “loose cannon,” and Thorpe responds by saying King has “daddy issues.”

Out comes an angry Jaida Parker, with a microphone in one hand and a brick in the other. Parker is yelling for to take down the ring ropes. Parker is calling out Vice for an Underground match. The show cuts to a commercial break just as Parker hijacks the show. This leads to an Underground match being added to the Deadline card.

Back from commercials, and Parker is in the ring calling out Vice. Referees around the ring taking down the ropes. Out comes NXT General Manager Ava, and she tells Parker she can have an Underground match. Just not tonight. Ava says Parker cannot wrestle twice in one night.

Lola Vice storms back onto the sound stage and she is yelling for Parker. Vice confronts Parker in the ring. The GM seems powerless to stop an altercation. Parker tossed the brick to Vice, but that was a diversion. Parker then drops Vice with a roaring elbow. Vice is knocked out as Parker stands over her. Parker against Vice in the Underground at Deadline is set.

Karmen Petrovic is chatting backstage with Dion Lennox and Brinley Reece, when Petrovice gets roses from Ashante “Thee” Adonis. The romance continues.

Myles Borne wins a Number One Contenders’ Tag Team Battle Royal

Myles Borne wins the battle royal, which makes the No Quarter Catch Crew the number one contenders for the tag team titles. Borne and Tavion Heights will challenge for the NXT Tag Team Championship at Deadline against champions Nathan Frazier & Axiom.

Unlike other tag team battle royals, an elimination of one team member does not mean both teammates are eliminated. The last man in the ring wins the match her his team. The final three are Borne, Tank Ledger, and Lucien Price. Borne clotheslines Tank over the top rope, and then Borne dropkicks Price off the turnbuckles.

Eric Bischoff hosts a face-to-face confrontation with NXT Champion Trick Williams and challenger Ridge Holland

Bischoff does a good job of hosting this segment and hyping it up. The confrontation between champion and challenger led to a brawl and an injury angle. Trick Williams leaves on a stretcher after Holland uses his DDT finisher to spike Williams on the announce desk.

Before the injury angle came walking and talking, as Bischoff enters the soundstage. He is joined by his guests, and promos are cut. Holland and Williams trade barbs. They then get into a brawl. The fighting spills outside the ring. Holland smashes Williams into the ring steps, and then Holland gives Williams an implant DDT on the announce desk. The desk did not break, and they sold it like Willaims was seriously injured from the spot. A stretcher is wheeled out for Williams.

After a commercial break, Williams is shown being taken out on a stretcher. Reporter Sarah Schreiber offers an update from Ava, who was unsure what potential injury means for the NXT Championship match at Deadline. Thanks for the update, I guess.

Karmen Petrovic defeated Nikkita Lyons

Petrovic pinned Lyons after the “Silent Slice” kick. Ashante “Thee” Adonis becomes involved in the match just before the finish, and Petrovic is angry with him for pushing her. He was seemingly trying to save her, but that is not how it worked out. Nonetheless, Petrovic perseveres to deliver the Silent Slice.

Shawn Spears talks with Brooks Jensen and Niko Vance. Spears is playing the long game. Whatever that means in NXT. This skit made Spears look foolish, as both Tatum Paxley and Gigi Dolan clown on him. This leads to Spears scouting the next match. Whatever that means.

Gigi Dolan (with Tatum Paxley) defeated Izzi Dame

Dame fought valiantly, and she got a lot of offense. In WWE logic, that foreshadowed the outcome where Dolan wins in the end. Dolan won via pinfall after a “Gigi Driver” finish. Paxley became involved during the match, and she takes a bump for Dame. Spears is in the aisle for much of the match being creepy as heck as he watches on.

Sean “X-Pac” Waltman, in a cameo appearance, joins Je’Von Evans for a backstage interview. X-Pac says he was the same age as Evans when Waltman beat Razor Ramon. Evans goes to shake hands with Waltman, but X-Pac wants to “Too Sweet” instead.

Eddy Thorpe defeated Axiom and Lexis King and Cedric Alexander in a fatal four-way match to qualify for the Men’s Iron Survivor Challenge

Several wrestlers are on hand watching the match. Ethan Page is providing guest commentary at the announce desk. Je’Von Evans is watching among the studio audience, while Wes Lee is Crow Sting (as he watching from a platform overlooking the ring).

Thorpe pinned King, after stealing a pinfall from Axiom. Just as they go home, Axiom delivers the “Golden Ratio” to King. Axiom seemingly has a pinfall, but Thorpe pulls Axiom out of the ring NWO style. Thorpe then jumps into the ring to cover King for a three count. In winning, Thorpe becomes the final qualifier for the Men’s Iron Survivor Challenge. The first part of the match, before the commercial break, was okay. After the break, the match greatly heats up and the action intensifies.

GM Ava is FaceTiming with Stevie Turner and Robert Stone. Ava insists the NXT title match at Deadline will go on as plans, despite Trick being injured in the brawl earlier tonight.

Thorpe also cuts a promo on Turner and Stone.

NXT Women’s Champion Roxanne Perez get into the ring, wearing street clothes and the NXT title over he shoulder. Perez cuts a heckuava promo, and she also cuts promos on all of the participants of the Iron Survivor Challenge.

This all leads to Sol Ruca, Zaria, Stephanie Vaquer and Giulia all coming out to confront each other and Perez. A brawl erupts between the four women. Meanwhile, Wren Sinclair lays out Perez. Sinclair then stands over Perez while holding the title belt overhead.

TO THE BACK, where Eddy Thorpe is laid out after being jumped by a mystery assailant. The show ends with a Tonya Harding angle on this go-home episode of NXT.

    • If you had told me that in 2012 that 12 years later CM Punk would be a far more fascinating character than he is now at the height of his rebellious status, I’d say that’s just not in the cards for him. And yet I look at what he did with [Drew] McIntyre and realize that he’s so much more interesting now. He has a deeper connection with the audience now, which I never imagined would have been possible.
    • You realize that rebels age out and once they do, they can no longer be the embodiment of the disruption that progresses against the establishment. And yet he is now the older rebel with a little more wisdom behind him and a little more tact involved and he’s that much more compelling version of a character and persona — let alone his ability to portray it — than ever before.

    • I don’t care what your politics are. You’re wrong, but I still love you. And I’m going to say hello and I’m going to give you a hug whether you want it or not when I see you. • As far as creativity and my fingerprints on the show, I’m thinking more of the production than storylines. Let’s be real, I’m not fluent in the backstory and talent and everything that has been going on in MLW. That will become important and clearly, Court [Bauer] and his team have a handle on that. What I want to do is whatever stories they have in place already, I’m focused on telling that story. What could I do from a production standpoint? For example, the way we treat the backstage interviews or the way we thread the story throughout the show. The way we build anticipation for the main event. Whatever is fundamental in professional wrestling but often times overlooked. Everyone is focused on the finish, the big spot in the match or the in-ring promo. All things that deserve attention, but in the process on focusing on the big things, producers have a tendency to lose sight of the little things that make the show flow and creates emotion and hold viewers’ interest, and surprise them.
  • Bischoff addressed whether he could see himself working for MLW if the show goes well:
    • It’s a good question and fair question, but I’m trying not to think about it because I just want to see how much fun I have. It’s not just me having fun. If Court and his team don’t enjoy it, just slug through it. I don’t want to do that. Or I feel that way, I don’t. The door is open certainly. I got bills. I got a life. I get bored in the middle of nowhere Wyoming occasionally and like to throw myself into something to put pressure on myself with something that challenges me.
    • It’s not a test. My only expectation is to have a great time and make sure the audience has fun. Make sure the talent I work with walks away with maybe saying, ‘I’ve heard all these terrible things about him. He is not such a bad guy.’ Better yet, maybe they say they learned something from this experience. That’s the fun of it. Directing talent and getting more out of them than they thought they could give that’s the home run. In addition to collaboration, that’s the part I miss.

Thursday Update

WWE

  • To promote Royal Rumble tickets going on sale this week, WWE posted a video with John Cena hyping that it will be the final Royal Rumble event he ever competes at. Cena’s retirement tour is set to last from January through December 2025.
  • Angelo Dawkins cut a social media promo ahead of The Street Profits challenging Motor City Machine Guns for the WWE Tag Team titles on SmackDown this Friday.
  • LA Knight made an appearance at last night’s Milwaukee Bucks NBA game, working the giant T-shirt cannons.
  • Speaking with The Takedown, Kurt Angle reflected on working for WWE during the Attitude Era:
    • It’s actually more difficult (to work for WWE during a hot period) because you have to outdo yourself from the prior week. I was very lucky to get in the business right in the peak of the Attitude Era. It was the best era in wrestling. And the crazy thing about back then was everybody was a star. It didn’t matter if you were the opening card match, mid card match, main event card match. You were a star and your name was held in high regard.
    • Nowadays, you have your handful of stars, and then everybody else is kind of at a lower level. Back then, everybody was the household name. I mean, The godfather, Val Venis, and Bob Holly, and then you know Undertaker, The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin — just everybody was widely known throughout the world. If you want to be at the top of the heap, you have to produce. So, I knew that when I started.
  • Former Miami Dolphins defensive back Trill Williams – who attended a tryout for WWE this summer – appears to have signed with the company. He was spotted in the background of a segment on NXT this week.
  • With their 10-year anniversary approaching, all three members of The New Day were featured on an episode of WWE Break It Down, looking back at some of their past ring gear.
  • Here’s the lineup for this Friday’s episode of NXT Level Up:
    • Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo & Luca Crusifino vs. Uriah Connors & Kale Dixon
    • Oro Mensah vs. Drake Morreaux
    • Carlee Bright vs. Izzi Dame

AEW/Other Wrestling

  • AEW uploaded post-Dynamite comments from Adam Cole, Will Ospreay, and Mark Davis.
  • In this week’s Mone Mag, Mercedes Mone reflected on returning to New England for recent AEW and NJPW events:
    • This week was extra special because I got to be back in BO$$TON/New England with Dynamite in NH, as I said, and Collision in Providence, RI, and even made a surprise appearance for NJPW in Lowell—more on that later. Being back in Boston, in any capacity, just fills me up; there’s something so comforting about being surrounded by friends, family, and fans.
    • It’s extra special for me because I get to have my brother Joshua tag along. He came to all three venues with me. To see him healthy and walking on his own was pure magic. Joshua’s face lit up as we walked by the AEW trucks, but when he saw Saraya on one of the trucks, he couldn’t contain himself, constantly asking, ‘Mercedes, when are you going to wrestle Saraya?’ That’s his dream match for me, and I can’t wait to make it happen someday.
  • Mone wrote about her NJPW appearance:
    • I ended up staying in BO$$TON for a couple of extra days to hang out with my brother, Joshua, and because NJPW had a show coming up in Lowell. And, of course, you can’t have such an incredible lineup without the NJPW Strong Women’s Champion, Mercedes Moné!
    • Truth be told, Lowell has a special place in my heart. It’s where my wrestling journey really kicked off. This town was home to Chaotic Wrestling, the organization that helped shape me into the wrestler I am today. Ironically, it was the very same ring I wrestled in! The amount of gratitude I have for the city, that time and those people can’t even be described. When you are the highest-paid female in our sport, you never forget where you came from or who helped get you there – or at least you shouldn’t. So, you know damn well that if I can make my schedule work to help support those who helped me get where I am today, I always and forever will.  I asked Rocky if I could make a surprise appearance, and luckily, he was thrilled to have me join!
    • As I got ready to make my entrance, I couldn’t help but think back to my younger self—the girl with dreams of becoming the best wrestler in the world. Fast forward 14 years, and here I am at NJPW with the TBS Women’s Championship in my hands. I took a moment to let it all sink in. When I finally stepped out, the crowd went wild, cheering for their CEO. The energy was just incredible.
  • Ricochet, who faces Dante Martin on the Rampage episode that airs tomorrow, says it’s a match he’s been wanting for a while.
  • AEW wished Amanda Huber a happy birthday.
  • Eric Bischoff told Fox News that he’s donating his pay for MLW One-Shot to Tunnels to Towers, a charity that assists the families of first responders and veterans following 9/11:
    • One of the things I told (MLW founder Court Bauer) right away was this isn’t about the money. He started to negotiate my fee and I really wasn’t interested in negotiating it, I just said whatever it is, I’m going to donate it to Tunnel to Towers.
    • So, it doesn’t matter, and I don’t want to negotiate it. I just want whatever it is to be donated because I’m not doing this for the money. I’m doing it for the fun.
  • The December 5 One-Shot event in New York City is being built around Bischoff being in control for the night, but Bischoff does not expect that he’ll be sticking around for a longer run:
    • I don’t even think about that. One of the things I told Court is that for me to do something in wrestling now, it has to be fun. If it’s not fun for me, if it’s just a job, or if it’s just a payday, I’m really not that interested. … When it comes to putting my toe back in the water in wrestling, my first priority is that it has to be fun. If it’s not fun, I’m not interested.
    • So it all depends. I honestly, to be very transparent about it, I can’t see it. I like my life just the way it is. I live in a beautiful part of the country out in the middle of nowhere where I can look out my back window and see Yellowstone National Park…
    • So, for me to commit – just committing to professional wrestling is 24 hours, seven days a week. If you’re not doing it, you’re thinking about it. If you’re not thinking about it, you’re worrying about it. If you’re not worrying about it, you’re sleeping. It’s hard for me to imagine. But again, it depends how much fun I have. If it’s successful and everybody, not just me, but if the audience enjoys, if Court and his team – most importantly- enjoy the process, then, you know, anything’s possible. But highly unlikely. Let’s put it that way.
  • Bischoff was a guest on No-Contest Wrestling.
  • Satoshi Kojima will defend his MLW World title against CMLL legend Ultimo Guerrero on the TV taping portion of the One-Shot event.
  • On Barstool’s Rasslin’ podcast, Matt Riddle explained how a promo where he forgot his lines helped him become friends with Randy Orton:
    • Before we actually wrestled a full match, Randy wasn’t a huge fan of me. I guess he thought I was disrespectful because I had my headphones on. He came to the locker room, everybody was shaking everybody’s hand.
    • I didn’t want to be like a nerd and go over. Didn’t wanna do that. So I [just] gave him a nod. I was waiting for my chance to shake his hand, but I guess he took that as disrespect. I wasn’t [blowing him off].
    • Later on, I did a promo with Asuka where I forgot my lines. I had this long segment about talking about robots in Japan, and I forgot it. I didn’t know we were live; I thought we were recording. When I did that, I was like, ‘Oh no, I’m probably in trouble.’
    • When I went to the locker room the first person that said anything was Randy. He goes, ‘I don’t know if that sh*t was planned, kid, but that was the funniest sh*t you’ve done since you’ve been here. That was your best promo yet.’ I was like ‘Well, at least Randy liked it.’ and then Vince and Bruce, and everybody else that was in creative also enjoyed it.
  • Salina de la Renta shared that she and her significant other Jovan Fresco have welcomed a baby into the world.

  • YouTuber and wrestler Simon Miller was a guest on Insight with Chris Van Vliet.
