AEW’s Chris Jericho suffers broken nose in barbed wire death match

Chris Jericho suffered a broken nose during his barbed wire death match against Eddie Kingston at Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite.

AEW revealed the news on Twitter Thursday night:

The injury happened during a Codebreaker spot with a barbed wire wrapped chair that accidentally hit Jericho in the face. He immediately checked his nose, which was bleeding, and continued working the match per normal.

Jericho defeated his rival in the end, using an assist from Sammy Guevara, to hit a Judas Effect on Kingston to get the win. Afterward, Kingston gained a measure of revenge by throwing Jericho in a barbed wire pit on the outside of the ring.

It’s unknown how long Jericho and Kingston will be out of action or off TV selling the injuries from the match.

It was the latest escalation in the feud between the two men that dates back to this year’s Revolution. Wednesday was only their second singles bout.

Warner Bros. Discovery asked for AEW gimmick match to tie in with Shark Week

Warner Bros. Discovery asked AEW to help promote this year’s Shark Week.

It was announced on AEW Rampage that Eddie Kingston will face Chris Jericho in a barbed wire death match on the July 20 edition of Dynamite. During the match, members of the Jericho Appreciation Society will be locked inside a shark cage suspended above the ring.

Our own Dave Meltzer addressed the gimmick match on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio

“The shark thing I guess is the gimmick having to do with Shark Week. Discovery asked them to do a tie-in so they came up with a match to do a tie-in in,” Meltzer said on the show.

The barbed wire death match between Kingston and Jericho will be the second time they’ve met in singles competition. Kingston defeated Jericho in their first meeting at AEW Revolution in March.

Shark Week begins July 24 on Discovery+ and will feature numerous shark-related documentaries. The annual programming block first premiered in 1988.

Chris Jericho vs. Eddie Kingston barbed wire death match set for AEW Fyter Fest week 2

A barbed wire death match is set for the second week of AEW Fyter Fest.

It was announced tonight on AEW Rampage that Eddie Kingston will take on Chris Jericho in a barbed wire death match. Members of the Jericho Appreciation Society will be locked inside a shark cage suspended above the ring.

Jericho and Kingston have continued to feud following their Blood and Guts match last month. Kingston had Jericho submitting to the plum stretch in that match, but Claudio Castagnoli scored the win after submitting Matt Menard.

On this week’s Dynamite, footage was shown of Jericho orchestrating an attack on Kingston’s friend, Ruby Soho, with Tay Conti slamming a car door on Soho’s hand. On this week’s Rampage, Kingston said that after defeating a young star like Konosuke Takeshita, he wanted another shot at Chris Jericho.

The first week of Fyter Fest begins on Dynamite this coming Wednesday. Matches announced include Claudio Castangnoli vs. Jake Hager, The Young Bucks vs. Swerve Strickland & Keith Lee and Powerhouse Hobbs & Ricky Starks for the AEW World Tag Team titles, Anna Jay vs. Serena Deeb, and Christian Cage & Luchasaurus will appear.

Blood and Guts announced for June 29 edition of AEW Dynamite

The return of Blood and Guts is happening later this month.

AEW announced that a special edition of Dynamite, Blood and Guts, is set to take place on June 29 in Detroit, Michigan. This follows an angle during tonight’s Dynamite that saw Chris Jericho accept a Blood and Guts challenge on behalf of the Jericho Appreciation Society from William Regal and Eddie Kingston.

Jericho appeared during tonight’s show, highlighting himself and the Jericho Appreciation Society winning the Anarchy at the Arena match at Double or Nothing this past Sunday. Kingston arrived with Regal, with Regal dropping the term “blood and guts”.

Jericho initially rejected the challenge. However, after Ortiz ran into the ring and managed to snip off a lock of Jericho’s hair, Jericho accepted. Jericho, however, said he wanted something in return. He wanted a hair match against Ortiz that was later confirmed for AEW Road Rager on June 15 in St. Louis, Missouri.

After Jon Moxley defeated Daniel Garcia on tonight’s Dynamite, he said he wanted in the Blood and Guts match as well.

The first and so far only Blood and Guts match took place on the May 5, 2021 edition of Dynamite. In the match, The Pinnacle (MJF, Wardlow, Shawn Spears, and FTR) defeated The Inner Circle (Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, Jake Hager, Santana, and Ortiz).

Jon Moxley & Eddie Kingston vs. Private Party set for AEW Dynamite

A new match announcement has been made for tonight’s Double or Nothing go-home edition of Dynamite

Tony Khan revealed on Wednesday that Eddie Kingston & Jon Moxley will team up to face Private Party on the show. He also noted that this will be the first time since September that Moxley and Kingston have teamed up in AEW.

Wednesday’s edition of AEW Dynamite will take place from the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The full lineup for the show is as follows:

  • FTR vs. Roppongi Vice for the ROH World Tag Team titles
  • Owen Hart Tournament men’s semifinal: Samoa Joe vs. Kyle O’Reilly

AEW’s Eddie Kingston vs. Tomohiro Ishii official for NJPW Capital Collision

The first match for Saturday, May 14’s NJPW Capital Collision has been announced.

After issuing a challenge to Tomohiro Ishii at last Saturday’s Windy City Riot, Eddie Kingston will indeed face Ishii in Washington D.C., as NJPW made the match official today.

Ishii defeated Minoru Suzuki at Windy City Riot in the show’s semi-main event. After the bout, Kingston appeared and issued the challenge during an in-ring promo segment.

Ishii appeared at this week’s AEW Rampage taping, facing Adam Cole in an Owen Hart Foundation Men’s Tournament qualifying match. That match will air Friday on Rampage on TNT.

Kingston has been a regular at NJPW Strong tapings in recent months, appearing at March’s Strong Style Evolved taping, last December’s Nemesis taping, as well as last October’s New Japan Showdown taping in Philadelphia.

Capital Collision will air as a pay-per-view event on FITE TV.

The announced lineup so far:

NJPW Capital Collision, Saturday, May 14 —

  • Eddie Kingston vs. Tomohiro Ishii

Eddie Kingston challenges Tomohiro Ishii at NJPW Windy City Riot

Eddie Kingston challenged Tomohiro Ishii to a match for NJPW’s Capital Collision event on May 14.

After Ishii defeated Minoru Suzuki at tonight’s Windy City Riot event in Chicago, Kingston came out and confronted Ishii. He said that while Ishii is known for his strong style, Kingston lives and breathes the king’s road style, referring to All Japan’s style of wrestling in the 1990s. He then issued the challenge for May 15th in Washington D.C., a challenge that Ishii quickly accepted.

Kingston has made several appearances for New Japan Strong in the last year. Most recently, he teamed with Fred Rosser to defeat Daniel Garcia and Fred Yehi at NJPW’s Strong Style Evolved tapings that were held on March 20. That continued the ongoing feud between Kingston and the Jericho Appreciation Society, which Garcia is a member of.

Names already announced for Capital Collision include Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Jay White, Will Ospreay, Jon Moxley, Minoru Suzuki, Jeff Cobb, Tom Lawlor, and Fred Rosser.

Chris Jericho to address Eddie Kingston on AEW Dynamite

A new segment has been announced for Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite.

Following his defeat to Eddie Kingston at Sunday’s Revolution pay-per-view, Chris Jericho will address Kingston on Dynamite.

Jericho took to his Instagram account on Monday to further his storyline with Kingston, and to tease the segment for Wednesday.

Jericho had promised to shake Kingston’s hand if Kingston was able to defeat him. Following their Revolution bout, Kingston offered the handshake. After hesitating, Jericho declined the offer and left the ring.

The Jericho segment joins a TNT title match, as well as a number one contender’s match for the AEW Women’s World title in Wednesday’s announced lineup.

AEW Dynamite, Wednesday, March 9, 8 p.m. Eastern time —

  • TNT Championship match, winner faces Wardlow at Dynamite St. Patrick’s Day Slam: Sammy Guevara (c) vs. Scorpio Sky
  • AEW Women’s World Championship number one contender’s match: Thunder Rosa vs. Leyla Hirsch
  • Chris Jericho addresses Eddie Kiingston

Chris Jericho vs. Eddie Kingston set for AEW Revolution

Chris Jericho vs. Eddie Kingston is officially on for AEW Revolution.

The two agreed to the match during an intense promo segment on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite in which Jericho questioned whether Kingston can win “the big one” due to his fear of success.

Kingston retorted by saying he wants the Jericho that was the first AEW World Champion, that turned WCW upside down, the one that got the respect of one of Kingston’s heroes Tenryu in WAR and the one that Jericho’s close friend “Levesque” hated.

This will be the first ever singles meeting between the two and is a match that has been building for months, built on Kingston not wanting Jericho’s help when he did several run-ins when Kingston was getting attacked by 2point0 and Daniel Garcia.

Here’s the current card for the Sunday, March 6th pay-per-view from Orlando, Florida:

  • AEW World Champion Hangman Page vs. Adam Cole title match
  • AEW Women’s Champion Britt Baker vs. Thunder Rosa title match
  • AEW Tag Team Champions Jurassic Express vs. reDRagon vs. TBD three-way title match
  • CM Punk vs. MJF in a dog collar match
  • Face of the Revolution ladder match featuring Wardlow, Powerhouse Hobbs, Keith Lee, Ricky Starks and several TBDs
  • Matt Hardy, Andrade El Idolo and Isiah Kassidy vs. Sting, Darby Allin and Sammy Guevara in a tornado trios match

AEW’s Eddie Kingston fractures orbital bone, hoping to return in three weeks

AEW’s Eddie Kingston is out of action for what he hopes is around three weeks after he fractured his orbital bone, according to Dave Meltzer.

Tony Khan announced that Kingston was injured during Saturday’s AEW Dark tapings in Orlando, Florida, but didn’t give specifics. Kingston was part of the commentary team for the shows.

Kingston’s last match was against Joey Janela on January 8th in a match taped for AEW Dark. It’s unknown if that is when he was hurt.

If the timetable for his return is accurate, he would be back in plenty of time to build for a match at the March 6th Revolution pay-per-view.

The 40-year-old was scheduled for action at this Sunday’s The WRLD on GCW pay-per-view. It’s unknown whether he will still make an appearance at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.

Kingston has been involved in a storyline with Chris Jericho that has also included 2point0, Daniel Garcia and Santana & Ortiz as of late.

NJPW Strong results: Eddie Kingston vs. Gabriel Kidd

Report —

TJP defeated The DKC

The battle of the acronyms.

LA Dojo trainee The DKC came into this match like a fireball. He lit TJP up with chops early on. DKC had a couple of very vocal supporters in the audience and was very over at the venue.

TJP slowed the match down once he took control on offense. He worked over DKC’s knees with a variety of leglocks. The DKC came back with a leg lariat and a flurry of knife-edged chops from all angles. He then used DK Fire on TJP, which is a signature spot of his where he bends his opponent across his knee, almost like a GTR, but then just starts chopping the opponent up.

The DKC is about chops and fire, and I can get behind that.

TJP made a late comeback in this and eventually laid the DKC out with a nice backdrop suplex. Actually, both were out on the mat after that. He’d later catch the DKC in mid-air with a dropkick, then put him away with a big Black Mamba frog splash. Good opener.

Bullet Club (Hikuleo & Chris Bey) defeated Jordan Clearwater and Keita Murray

Murray was subbing for Clark Connors, who had to miss the tapings after he contracted COVID-19.

Bullet Club was pretty popular with the Hollywood crowd. These two have been a semi-regular team lately, not just competing for NJPW Strong but also on IMPACT.

Murray and Bey kicked things off and had a short but sweet exchange. Clearwater and Murray would double-team Bey until Bey tagged out to Hikuleo. These two could be a money feud for Strong in 2022 and beyond.

Murray spiked Bey with a DDT. He and Clearwater double-teamed the larger Hikuleo, but eventually Bey snuck into the ring and took Murray out with a roundhouse kick to the head and a ripcord knee to put Murray away and pick up the win for BC.

Eddie Kingston defeated Gabriel Kidd

The crowd in Hollywood were chanting “ED-DIE! ED-DIE!” before Kingston even walked out. He felt like a big deal, which in turn made the match feel like a big chance for Kidd.

They locked up. Kingston forced Kidd into the corner, then missed an uraken spinning backfist when Kidd parried. Kingston gave Kidd the “this close” gesture.

The two exchanged hard chops and elbows next. Kidd was fired the hell up. He put Kingston on the mat with a big boot. The crowd began booing him. That’s how hot the crowd was for Kingston at the tapings.

Kingston poked Kidd in the eye, headbutted him, then bit him. Kidd threw a penalty kick into Kingston’s back, which apparently woke Kingston up because he immediately stood up and blasted Kidd in the face with two hard palm strikes. His singlet straps came down next. Business time.

They had another pretty insane exchange of strikes on their feet, and again Kingston laid Kidd out with palm strikes. I was actually in attendance for this and wanted to emphasize how physical and brutal, this was. It wasn’t over the top, just physical and very intense.

They traded machine gun chops in the corner. The crowed loved that. By around five minutes into the match it felt like these two had thrown at least 100 chops. Kidd took Kingston down with a hard European uppercut.

Before Kingston stood up, Kidd kicked him, then called him a “motherf*cker.” The crowd immediately began chanting “YOU F*CKED UP!”

The exchanged even more chops next. Both had red & purple chests. They traded really hard palm strikes. Kidd cursed at him again. Kingston responded with another eye poke. Kingston’s mouth was bleeding late in this.

Kidd earned a two count after a backdrop suplex. He next used an exploder suplex, which Kingston was immediately up from. Kingston threw Kidd with his own exploder. Kidd was also immediately back up from Kingston’s suplex.

If this were a video game, both wrestlers’ spirit meters would be flashing like crazy. Kidd plowed Kingston with a two hard lariats and a brainbuster, but he wasn’t able to make it back up to pin Kingston. The ref started a double countout.

Kingston stuck Kidd with a DDT. At the 10-minute mark, he earned a near fall after a sit-out power bomb. He’d connect with the uraken next but Kidd wouldn’t go down. Kidd launched Kingston with a German suplex. Kingston answered with a backdrop suplex of his own.

The crowd was hot for this as it came to a finish. They had yet another palm strike exchange before Kingston spiked Kidd onto his head with a half-nelson suplex before putting Kidd away with the uraken, which he’d attempted at the top of the match.

The crowd chanted for Kingston as he exited. Kidd was helped to the back by ring staff.

Final thoughts:

Good episode of Strong with an absolutely killer main event.

We’ve all seen tons of great wrestling of the past week, but I’d consider Kingston vs. Kidd must-see. Kidd is going to be a big, big deal in the future, while Kingston clearly is a big deal right now.

Next week sees the next installment of NJPW Strong: Nemesis from Hollywood.

AEW’s Eddie Kingston to headline NJPW Strong

Three matches have been announced for this week’s episode of NJPW Strong.

In the show’s main event, AEW’s Eddie Kingston will face Gabriel Kidd. This will be Kingston’s second appearance on Strong, his first being in a main event street fight at the NJPW Showdown tapings in Philadelphia in October, teaming with Jon Moxley against Minoru Suzuki and Lance Archer.

In the second match, Bullet Club’s Hikuleo and Chris Bey will take on Keita Murray and Jordan Clearwater.

In the opener, it’s a battle of initials, as TJP faces The DKC.

The Nemesis episodes of Strong were taped on December 9, 2021 in Los Angeles, California at the Vermont Hollywood. Saturday’s show will also be available on demand immediately following airing.

Here is the full lineup:

NJPW Strong Nemesis night one, Saturday, January 8, 8 p.m. Eastern time on NJPW World–

  • Eddie Kingston vs. Gabriel Kidd
  • Hikuleo & Chris Bey vs. Keita Murray & Jordan Clearwater
  • TJP vs. The DKC
