AJ Styles and Cedric Alexander are officially set to face off at Clash of Champions.
Coming out of last night’s Raw, WWE has announced that Styles will defend his United States Championship against Alexander at Sunday’s pay-per-view. It’s taking place at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Alexander pinned Styles in the main event of Raw last night. Alexander teamed with Seth Rollins, Braun Strowman & The Viking Raiders against Styles, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson, Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode.
The O.C. (Styles, Gallows & Anderson) attacked Alexander during a backstage segment on last week’s Raw. Alexander initially faced Styles in a non-title singles match last night, with The Viking Raiders making the save after Gallows and Anderson caused a disqualification.
Here’s the updated card for Clash of Champions:
Universal Champion Seth Rollins defending against Braun Strowman
WWE Champion Kofi Kingston defending against Randy Orton
Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch defending against Sasha Banks
SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley defending against Charlotte Flair
Roman Reigns vs. Erick Rowan
Raw Tag Team Champions Seth Rollins & Braun Strowman defending against Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode
SmackDown Tag Team Champions Big E & Xavier Woods defending against The Revival
Women’s Tag Team Champions Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross defending against Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville
United States Champion AJ Styles defending against Cedric Alexander
Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura defending against The Miz
The finals of the King of the Ring tournament
WWE Cruiserweight Champion Drew Gulak defending against Humberto Carrillo and Lince Dorado in a triple threat match
Another match has been added to the lineup for Monday’s episode of Raw at Madison Square Garden.
WWE has announced that United States Champion AJ Styles will face Cedric Alexander in a non-title match on the show. It comes after an angle where The O.C. (Styles, Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson) attacked Alexander while he was doing a backstage interview on this week’s Raw.
After the attack, Alexander lost to Baron Corbin in the quarterfinals of WWE’s King of the Ring tournament. In the semifinals of the tournament, Corbin will face Ricochet and Samoa Joe in a triple threat match on Monday’s Raw.
WWE has yet to announce who will challenge for Styles’ US title at Clash of Champions. The pay-per-view is taking place at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina on September 15.
Monday’s Raw is the go-home show for Clash of Champions. Rey Mysterio vs. Gran Metalik is set for the episode. Steve Austin will also appear and moderate a contract signing for Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman’s Universal Championship match at Clash of Champions.
Date: September 2, 2019 Location: Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, MD
The Big Takeaway —
Bayley turned heel and appears to have realigned herself with Sasha Banks. Read more below.
Steve Austin will host a contract signing on Raw in MSG next week between Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman. They had a contract signing tonight but it was interrupted by the OC and for some reason, they can’t just sign the paper in private.
The quarterfinal match between Samoa Joe and Ricochet somehow ended in a draw and both men advanced to the semifinals next week. Baron Corbin beat Cedric Alexander to advance and will face both Joe and Ricochet in a triple threat.
Show Recap —
Universal Championship Contract Signing
Michael Cole hosted a contract signing between Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman. Both men received good reactions. They shook hands upon entering the ring. Cole asked how they would function as a team.
Rollins said he was no stranger to defending two titles and would do it again at Clash of Champions. Rollins intended on remaining a double champ after Clash. Strowman said he also intended on beating Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler, then asked Rollins how awkward it would be when his tag partner beat him for the Universal title.
Rollins reminded him that he slayed the beast, something Strowman couldn’t do, and at Clash the would slay the monster. Rollins signed the contract, but before Strowman could sign it, the OC interrupted. The crowd loudly chanted for Styles.
Styles mocked all of this, then wondered why Strowman was getting the title opportunity. It seemed like he only got the shot because he was Rollins’ partner and dumbly stared at the Universal title belt long enough.
Styles said he should get the next shot by proxy because he was US champion. He wondered who his opponent was going to be at Clash and figured it would be whoever looked at his belt long enough. He then advised his buddies not to look at his belt. He also mocked Roode and Ziggler, then threatened the men in the ring.
Cole tried to calm him down, then Styles said, “Shut up Michal Cole! I’ll slap your teeth down your throat.” The crowd cheered. Styles ripped up the contract and tossed it in the air. Strowman threw the table at him, then Rollins and Strowman cleared the ring and they abruptly went to break (about 11 minutes into the show).
Universal Champion Seth Rollins & Braun Strowman defeated Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson (w/US Champion AJ Styles) in a non-title tag team match
The OC worked over Rollins, then chucked him from the ring before he could tag out. Styles levelled him with a clothesline and they went to break. After the break, Rollins made the hot tag and Strowman ran wild on Anderson. He knocked down both opponents with a shoulder tackle, but missed a charge on Anderson and ran into the post.
Rollins gave Anderson a flying knee, then knocked Styles off the apron. Rollins then countered a schoolboy into a schoolboy of his own for the pinfall win.
Styles attacked Rollins immediately afterwards, but Rollins fought him off and gave him a suicide dive. Strowman then ran over both Anderson and Gallows with shoulder tackles outside the ring. However, Strowman also ran over Rollins by accident.
Ziggler and Roode ran out to attack Strowman. The OC joined in and they drove him into the steel steps. Rollins tried to make the save but Ziggler superkicked him and Roode gave him a Glorious DDT. All of the heels except Styles gave Strowman a Magic Killer, then they picked him up so Styles could finish him off with a Phenomenal forearm.
Charly Caruso interviewed Cedric Alexander, who commented on Baron Corbin playing dress-up last week with the crowd. He was suddenly attacked by the OC who laid him out. Cole and Renee Young wondered why the OC would attack Alexander.
Ziggler superkicked Hawkins, then Roode gave him a Glorious DDT for the pinfall win.
There were commercials for Undertaker on Smackdown next week and Becky Lynch on Steve Austin’s show after Raw.
Lacey Evans defeated Natalya (5:12)
As Evans made her entrance, Natalya’s music hit and she shoved down Evans on her way to the ring. Natalya was amused with herself and the crowd chanted for her.
Evans missed a moonsault, then Natalya came back with clotheslines and a snap suplex. Natalya called Evans a “nasty bitch.” As Natalya attacked Evans in the ropes, the referee pulled her off. Then Evans tossed her handkerchief at Natalya and clocked her with the “women’s right” for the pinfall win.
[Second hour]
Becky Lynch promo
Cole plugged Lynch’s match later (Lynch & Bayley vs. Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross), calling it a first-ever women’s championship showcase. Ugh.
Lynch said Banks bumbled her way through all of her excuses last week, calling it a bunch of crap. She said Banks had nothing to complain about, noting that Banks was the centrepiece of NXT and main evented all the time once she was on Raw while Lynch was the afterthought.
Lynch said Banks and Charlotte Flair were paraded around like the frauds that they were, but she showed the Flairs why she was The Man, and it was time to teach Banks that same lesson. The crowd chanted for Becky.
Lynch said Banks left with nothing after WrestleMania, but Bayley has been doing just fine without her. She said it must hurt Banks that Lynch is the face of the company because it really could have been Banks in that position.
Banks came out on the stage. Banks said Lynch was right — she was supposed to be in the Mania main event and be on all the posters, but the only reason Lynch got the spot was that Nia Jax broke her face. Banks reminded her that she left her laying a few weeks ago. Lynch dared her to fight.
Banks said she wasn’t going to fight for free in front of these people. She said the only way she would fight Lynch was for the title at Clash. Lynch said all she had to do was ask and accepted the challenge. Banks said the Man would be the Boss’ bitch.
Backstage, the Street Profits were speechless over the last segment, then sent us to commercial.
King of the Ring Quarterfinal Match: Baron Corbin defeated Cedric Alexander (14:27)
I guess whoever is in charge of this show didn’t think it might be a good idea to switch the order of the KOTR matches to give Alexander some time to recover.
Alexander was in control until he fell upside down over the ropes and Corbin drove him into the post. After a break, Corbin was in control. Alexander ducked a clothesline and came back with a dropkick but Corbin caught him with a spinebuster for two. Alexander tried a slingshot move but Corbin countered into a Deep Six for a nearfall.
Alexander avoided a charge and Corbin went shoulder-first into the post. Alexander sent him into the post three more times, kicked away at his shoulder, then hit a flip dive. Alexander caught him with a kick off the top but Corbin kicked out.
The crowd chanted for Alexander as he reversed an End of Days into a schoolboy for a nearfall. He then hit a Michinoku Driver for another nearfall. Alexander tried a springboard move but Corbin tripped him off the top rope and hit End of Days for the pinfall win.
This was good. Alexander got a chance to shine and the crowd was into him. It should be noted that whatever happened to Alexander in his match with Cesaro last week was completely ignored. They instead focused on his bum shoulder, which was injured at the hands of the OC earlier.
They plugged NXT on USA.
They aired a recap of the Roman Reigns/Daniel Bryan stuff, then showed Bryan’s statement. They also showed Steve Austin’s tweet suggesting that he host a contract signing next week between Rollins and Strowman.
Caruso interviewed Bayley, asking her about Banks’ return. Bayley said nothing. Caruso asked about Banks’ comment about the tag titles. Bayley said Banks was still her best friend and they’ve talked about it, but she’s keeping that to herself.
She said Banks did take her ball and go home, but now she was Smackdown Women’s champion and suggested Caruso ask her about that instead. Caruso wondered if Bayley was being overshadowed by Lynch. Bayley said no, the Smackdown title meant as much as the Raw title, and we’d see who was standing in whose shadow tonight.
The Viking Raiders defeated two jobbers (1:23)
Before the match, Caruso interviewed the two jobbers who drove here all the way from Pittsburgh for this match. The Baltimore crowd booed them. One of the jobbers said they’d make the Viking Raiders look like a couple of Baltimorons. The Viking Raiders won with the Viking Experience.
Backstage, Sarah Schrieber (who appeared to be hiding in a corner) approached Banks and asked her if she was rooting for her friend tonight. Banks yelled at her to get out of her face.
Steve Austin will be on Raw next week at MSG to host a contract signing.
King of the Ring Quarterfinal Match: Samoa Joe vs. Ricochet (15:57)
[Third hour]
Joe was in control until Ricochet sent him to the outside and nailed a moonsault off the barricade. In the ring, Joe hoisted up Ricochet, crossed his legs, then drove him into the mat. Ricochet followed later with a Lionsault for two. Ricochet landed awkwardly on his feet, then Joe caught him with a Uranage before driving him into the barricade.
After a break, Ricochet came back with a forearm, front dropkick, springboard clothesline and standing shooting star press for two. Joe avoided a move off the top and hit a powerslam for two. Ricochet fought back with a superkick and a space flying tiger drop.
Ricochet went to the top but Joe went up and caught him in the Coquina Clutch. Ricochet countered and sent them both off the top. Each man had their shoulders down and had their arms on each other, so the referee counted to three but didn’t announce a winner. The crowd seemed surprised.
The referee went to the timekeeper’s area and asked for a headset to talk with someone in the back. I guess he was willing to count the fall but had no idea who won. After talking with someone in the bank, Ricochet asked him what happened and who won. The referee said a ruling would be made later as he left up the ramp. Joe tried to attack but Ricochet fouth him off. This was weird.
Strowman confronted Rollins about Austin being involved next week. He thought maybe they were in cahoots. Rollins noted how ridiculous this was, and how ridiculous it was that Strowman was worried about that after they got jumped by five guys. Rollins let him know that he’s turned his back on his partners before, and also knows what it’s like to get stabbed in the back by his best friend. But Rollins assured him he doesn’t have anything to worry about and was fine with Austin moderating next week. Strowman said if Austin got in his face, he would get these hands.
Firefly Fun House
Bray Wyatt thought what the Fiend did to Finn Bálor was super duper rude and apologized on behalf of everyone at the Firefly Fun House. The Vince McMahon puppet appeared and asked how he dares to challenge Seth Rollins or Braun Strowman to a title match at Hell in a Cell. Wyatt let Vince know that he was making something and pulled out a wad of cash. Dollar signs appeared in Vince’s eyes, then Bray fed him dollar bills. The Vince puppet was happy and left. Bray said “see you in hell” as the Fiend mask briefly appeared.
Backstage, Corbin told Corey Graves that he’s getting a bye into the KOTR final. The referee told him that wasn’t true, that instead, Corbin would face both Joe and Ricochet in a triple threat match. Corbin was displeased.
Backstage, Rey Mysterio told Caruso that he wasn’t done and he had much more to accomplish. He was doing it for his son Dominick. The crowd applauded.
The Miz defeated Cesaro (5:07)
Cole noted that Miz could tie the Intercontinental title record on Sunday if he beats Shinsuke Nakamura. He didn’t mention who has the record. (It’s Chris Jericho.) The announcers also talked about Cesaro’s match at NXT UK Takeover on the weekend. Graves said the match reinvigorated Cesaro. Miz beat him clean with the Skull Crushing Finale in five minutes.
Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch & Smackdown Women’s Champion Bayley defeated Tag Team Champions Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross via DQ in a non-title match (10:44)
Bliss wrestled in a t-shirt. Less than two minutes into the match, Banks came out to her music and they went to break.
Cross and Bliss worked over Bayley. Lynch eventually got a hot tag and attacked Bliss with strikes, a running forearm and diving leg drop but Cross broke up the cover. Lynch gave Cross an Exploder, then kicked her out of the ring. As Lynch booted Bliss, Banks attacked Lynch from behind for the DQ.
Banks attacked Lynch with a chair until Bayley jumped in and pulled the chair away. Bayley then smiled at Banks and attacked Lynch repeatedly with the chair. The crowd popped for the turn, then erupted in Yes chants. They abruptly went off the air as they ran out of time.
Samoa Joe and Cedric Alexander are the first two wrestlers to advance to the King of the Ring quarterfinals.
Joe defeated Cesaro in their first round match on tonight’s Raw, while Alexander defeated Sami Zayn. Joe submitted Cesaro with the Coquina Clutch. Alexander pinned Zayn after hitting the Lumbar Check.
Ricochet vs. Drew McIntyre and The Miz vs. Baron Corbin will take place on Raw next week. The winner of Ricochet vs. McIntyre will face Joe in the quarterfinals. The winner of Miz vs. Corbin will face Alexander.
Ricochet & Miz defeated McIntyre & Corbin in a tag match on Raw tonight.
The first round of King of the Ring is set to continue on this week’s SmackDown. Kevin Owens vs. Elias and Apollo Crews vs. Andrade will take place on the show.
Ali vs. Buddy Murphy and Chad Gable vs. Shelton Benjamin are the other opening round matches on the SmackDown side of the bracket.
The finals of King of the Ring will be held at Clash of Champions in Charlotte, North Carolina on September 15.
WWE has announced two King of the Ring first round matches for Monday’s Raw and two for Tuesday’s SmackDown.
Cesaro vs. Samoa Joe and Cedric Alexander vs. Sami Zayn are set for Raw, while Kevin Owens vs. Elias and Apollo Crews vs. Andrade will take place on SmackDown.
The bracket for King of the Ring was revealed yesterday. Ricochet vs. Drew McIntyre and The Miz vs. Baron Corbin are the other first round matches on the Raw side of the bracket. The winner of Cesaro vs. Joe will face the winner of Ricochet vs. McIntyre in the second round. The winner of Alexander vs. Zayn will face the winner of Miz vs. Corbin.
Ali vs. Buddy Murphy and Chad Gable vs. Shelton Benjamin are the other first round matches on the SmackDown side. The winner of Owens vs. Elias will take on the winner of Ali vs. Murphy in the next round. The winner of Crews vs. Andrade will face the winner of Gable vs. Benjamin.
King of the Ring is a multi-week tournament that will culminate at Clash of Champions on September 15.
Monday’s Raw is taking place at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota is hosting Tuesday’s SmackDown.
Rey Mysterio and Andrade will face off in a two-out-of-three falls match tonight. Cedric Alexander vs. Drew McIntyre is set for the show as well.
WWE has also announced that Steve Austin will appear on tonight’s Raw via Skype. Austin will give his reaction to the SummerSlam main event, which saw Seth Rollins defeat Brock Lesnar to win the Universal Championship.
“Straight Up Steve Austin” premieres on the USA Network after Raw tonight. Rob Riggle is Austin’s guest on the episode.
Andrade has defeated Mysterio on Raw each of the past two weeks. He eliminated Mysterio in a gauntlet match two weeks ago, then ripped off Mysterio’s mask in a post-match angle. Andrade went to rip off Mysterio’s mask again in their match last week. Zelina Vega interfered after the distraction, and Andrade hit a hammerlock DDT on Mysterio to get the win.
Alexander defeated McIntyre on the July 15 episode of Raw. Since then, McIntyre has attacked Alexander twice before matches between them could get started.
WWE is back at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada for tonight’s Raw. Women’s Tag Team Champions Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross will defend their titles against Asuka & Kairi Sane. The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler has also been announced for the episode.
Shane McMahon & Drew McIntyre teamed against Roman Reigns and a partner of Shane’s choosing in the main event of Raw’s go-home show for Extreme Rules.
Shane paid Gary “The GOAT” Garbutt — a custodian from the arena — $5,000 to team with Reigns. Shane & McIntyre said they’d get Gary a mask, but it instead ended up being Cedric Alexander who wore it. He got some offense in while masked, but Shane & McIntyre won anyway after McIntyre gave “Gary” a Claymore Kick.
Reigns hit a Superman Punch on McIntyre after the match, and Alexander unmasked to reveal that it was him who teamed with Reigns.
A Beat the Clock Challenge on the episode decided the stipulation for Sunday’s SmackDown Women’s Championship match. After winning faster than Bayley did, Nikki Cross revealed that Bayley will now defend her title against Alexa Bliss & Cross in a handicap match at Extreme Rules.
Cross cut a promo and told Bayley to find a friend who is as loyal and honest as Bliss and who could slap some sense into Bayley. Bayley then laid out Cross with a Bayley-to-Belly and flying elbow drop.
Seth Rollins & Becky Lynch defeated Andrade & Zelina Vega in an elimination match. Rollins & Lynch were attacked by Baron Corbin & Lacey Evans after, and WWE questioned what would happen to their relationship if they lose to Corbin & Evans on Sunday.
The Big Takeaway: A better show this week. Sarah Logan got her win back against Dana Brooke as the pair had their third match in as many weeks. Robert Roode stole a win against Cedric Alexander when he used the ropes to gain the advantage.
**********
Sarah Logan defeated Dana Brooke (5:45)
They ran the tape from two weeks ago and referenced Brooke’s nasty facial injury, then showed us how Brooke had gotten her revenge on last week’s show. This kind of continuity is entirely rare for Main Event.
The match wasn’t quite as good as last week’s but was still full of decent work. Logan took the lead and has quite an array of moves in her locker. Her submission holds throughout and an impressive gutwrench suplex later on showed off her skill set.
Brooke was plucky throughout, trying to get an advantage whenever she could, but ultimately Logan had her beat. Just as they did last week, they did another spot where Brooke took a nasty looking turnbuckle bump, playing up that Logan was a threat.
Logan normally uses the Kentucky Knee, but here she finished Brooke with a flying knee to the back as Brooke was kneeling down. Presumably, this feud must continue.
Robert Roode defeated Cedric Alexander (5:36)
Roode and Alexander have also had a few matches together over the last few weeks on Main Event. They work well together, but are being utterly wasted on this show, particularly in Roode’s case.
Alexander did a tope through the ropes and looked like he had Roode beaten until he got caught with a spinebuster. Roode went for the Glorious DDT, but Alexander countered with a springboard enzuigiri.
As Alexander was about set up for the frog splash, he couldn’t get Roode down, so he slid under the ropes through Roode’s legs. Roode caught him and sat down, using the middle rope for leverage, stealing the win. He made out of there like a bandit.
Roode has won two straight now against Alexander, but Alexander would probably benefit from a rebrand and a new gimmick. His in-ring work is strong, but he essentially just comes out smiling and sticks his thumb up. Main Event would be an easy place for them to experiment with him.
The Big Takeaway: Dana Brooke got busted open when she was kneed and posted on the apron by Sarah Logan. Robert Roode made his first appearance on Main Event since November, defeating Cedric Alexander in a good match at the end of the show.
**********
Sarah Logan defeated Dana Brooke (4:03)
So, as most people will know, this match had a lot of publicity this week because it caused Brooke’s facial injury. The spot that caused Brooke to be busted open came about two minutes into the match after they had done some fairly solid back and forth.
Both of these performers have improved of late, but what led to Brooke being completely bloodied was partly because the spot was ill-conceived and partly because of a few mitigating factors.
Logan had Brooke in a chinlock at the ropes and the referee called for a break, so Brooke went out on to the apron under the ropes. Logan followed Brooke and kneed her in the face, which caused Brooke to turn around and take a posting.
From seeing the tape back, it was a combination of two things that meant that the spot went wrong: the force of the knee and the proximity of Brooke to the post. It was clear that Brooke had underestimated how close she was to the post.
Logan sat on the ropes, not entirely sure how to react as the ref dealt with the blood.
They threw up the “X” and raised Logan’s hand, but she couldn’t hide her concern for Brooke. Logan then swaggered out of the ring and back up the ramp.
Robert Roode defeated Cedric Alexander (6:50)
Roode hasn’t been on Main Event since the back end of last year when he and Chad Gable were tagging together. He looked in tremendous shape as he defeated Alexander here.
In contrast to the opening match, this was a good, solid wrestling match between two strong performers. Their different styles worked well together and, although it’s a crime that Roode is on this show at all, they put on a good match.
Alexander took a ton of the offense throughout. He flipped around and grounded Roode down, getting close to winning on several occasions. It was only in the last minute that Roode was able to turn things around.
Roode caught the charging Alexander and nailed him with a spinebuster for two. Then Alexander came back. He blocked Roode’s DDT attempts, but Roode knocked him off the top rope and was able to hit the Glorious DDT for the win.
The Big Takeaway: Standard fare this week on Main Event. Natalya carried Tamina to a decent match as Natalya won in the opener, then Cedric Alexander beat EC3 as the pair slugged it out in an enjoyable main event.
**********
Sam Roberts returned to make it a three-man announce booth alongside Byron Saxton and Renee Young this week. Commentary on Main Event has been in a state of flux for the last few months, with no permanent replacement for Corey Graves in place yet.
Natalya defeated Tamina (5:48)
This was a tough week for the extended Hart family. Last Saturday marked 17 years since the passing of Davey Boy Smith, while this Thursday was 20 years since Owen Hart’s death. Seeing Natalya get a win here — even if it was on Main Event — was a nice touch.
This was Natalya’s first appearance on this show since she submitted Lacey Evans back in February, while Tamina has had to accept a few appearances on Main Event over the last few months. Her WWE career continues to stutter.
Tamina got a lot of offense in as they essentially took the match 50-50 here. After lots of rest holds, Tamina went to put Natalya on her shoulders, but was caught up in a small package. It literally looked like Natalya just rolled off her rather than Tamina actually kicking out.
Natalya then locked in the Sharpshooter and Tamina immediately tapped.
Cedric Alexander defeated EC3 (7:23)
Like a lot of people, I’m not entirely sure what they’re doing with EC3. Moving him up to the main roster has resulted in him being underused and, to some extent, misused. The argument for cutting their losses and moving him back to NXT is strong at this point.
EC3 lost here to Cedric Alexander. The pair then went on to be involved in the 24/7 Championship fiasco on Raw after Main Event was recorded, with both men losing.
Much like the opening bout, this was very much a back-and-forth, 50-50 contest. It looked like EC3 had it when he hit a fireman’s carry cutter followed by what he used to call the Ethan Carter Driver on Impact. Alexander kicked out by the skin of his teeth.
EC3 went for the One Percenter, but Alexander quickly reversed it into the Lumbar Check. Alexander didn’t quite connect perfectly with the move, so it looked a little unwieldy, but it was enough to bag the win for him after a pretty decent match.
Tony Nese and Cedric Alexander will square off in the finals of the 205 Live #1 contender’s tournament next week.
Nese and Alexander both won semifinal matches tonight to advance to next week’s finals. Alexander and Oney Lorcan had a hard hitting affair to open this week’s show, but Lorcan took too long to finish Alexander. While Lorcan was on offense, Alexander suddenly blocked him and laid him out with the lumbar check for the win.
Nese meanwhile battled Drew Gulak, who had the advantage on him near the end of the match with the Gu-lock. Nese battled through, using the ropes for leverage and managed to hop over Gulak, covering him to advance.
The winner of the match next week will face Buddy Murphy for the Cruiserweight title at WrestleMania 35. Murphy has been absent from the show in the last few weeks, instead sending in videos. This week, he said it didn’t matter who would end up winning the tournament as there’s no stopping the unstoppable.
Both semifinal matches in 205 Live’s number one contender’s tournament are set for next week.
Tony Nese vs. Drew Gulak and Cedric Alexander vs. NXT’s Oney Lorcan will be taking place on next Tuesday’s 205 Live, with the winners advancing to the finals. The winner of the tournament will challenge for Buddy Murphy’s Cruiserweight Championship at WrestleMania 35.
Alexander advanced to the semifinals by defeating Akira Tozawa in the main event of this week’s 205 Live, while Lorcan defeated Humberto Carrillo to advance. This was the second time that Lorcan has wrestled on 205 Live. He previously lost to Rich Swann on the show in April 2017.
Nese defeated Kalisto and Gulak defeated Brian Kendrick in first round matches last week.
At last year’s WrestleMania, Alexander won the Cruiserweight Championship by defeating Mustafa Ali in a tournament final. He held the title until dropping it to Murphy at Super Show-Down in October.
WrestleMania 35 is taking place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on April 7.
An eight man tournament has been announced on 205 Live, where the winner will face Buddy Murphy for the Cruiserweight title at WrestleMania 35.
205 Live General Manager Drake Maverick made the announcement tonight at the start of 205 Live. The tournament will be an eight man, single elimination tournament that will take place over the next six weeks leading to WrestleMania. Two matches were then announced for tonight, with Humberto Carrillo facing TJP and Cedric Alexander taking on Mike Kanellis. Maverick said that these matches would have big implications heading into the tournament, which starts next week.
A similar tournament took place last year to determine a new Cruiserweight champion after Enzo Amore was stripped of the championship and released from the company. Cedric Alexander ended up winning the title, defeating Mustafa Ali in the finals at WrestleMania 34.
Buddy Murphy defeated Akira Tozawa at the Elimination Chamber pre-show this past weekend to successfully retain the title.
All three of Buddy Murphy’s challengers for the Royal Rumble have now been revealed.
Murphy will be defending his Cruiserweight Championship against Kalisto, Akira Tozawa, and Hideo Itami in a fatal four-way match at the Royal Rumble in Phoenix, Arizona on January 27. Itami defeated Cedric Alexander in a qualifying match at this week’s 205 Live tapings.
Kalisto defeated Lio Rush and Tozawa defeated Drew Gulak in last week’s qualifying matches.
Murphy has been Cruiserweight Champion since winning the title from Alexander at Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia last October. He defended the title against Mustafa Ali at Survivor Series and against Alexander at TLC.
Noam Dar also defeated Tony Nese in a match at this week’s 205 Live tapings.
This week’s 205 Live was taped at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida prior to Tuesday’s SmackDown. The 205 Live episode will air on the WWE Network at 7 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesday (January 9).
Alexander was announced as Murphy’s next challenger on last week’s episode of 205 Live. On the November 28 episode of the show, Alexander teamed with Mustafa Ali and pinned Murphy during a match where Murphy teamed with Tony Nese.
Murphy vs. Noam Dar in a non-title match and Alexander vs. Nese are set for this week’s 205 Live.
Murphy won the Cruiserweight title from Alexander at Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia this October. Murphy then retained the title against Ali at Survivor Series last month.
Here’s the updated card for TLC:
WWE Champion Daniel Bryan defending against AJ Styles
Intercontinental Champion Seth Rollins defending against Dean Ambrose
If Braun Strowman is able to wrestle at the PPV: Strowman vs. Baron Corbin in a tables, ladders, and chairs match (Strowman will challenge for Brock Lesnar’s Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble if he defeats Corbin. If Corbin wins, he’ll become the permanent general manager of Raw. Corbin will lose all of his GM power if Strowman wins)
Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey defending against Nia Jax
SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch defending against Charlotte Flair and Asuka in a triple threat tables, ladders, and chairs match
SmackDown Tag Team Champions Cesaro & Sheamus defending against The Usos and The New Day in a triple threat match
Natalya vs. Ruby Riott in a tables match
Finn Balor vs. Drew McIntyre
Elias vs. Bobby Lashley
WWE Cruiserweight Champion Buddy Murphy defending against Cedric Alexander
