Lio Rush wins Cruiserweight title from Drew Gulak on NXT

A new Cruiserweight Champion was crowned on this week’s episode of NXT.

In the opening match of the show, Lio Rush defeated Drew Gulak to win the Cruiserweight title. Rush pinned Gulak after hitting a frog splash, a springboard stunner (springboarding off the bottom rope), and another frog splash.

There was then a post-match angle where NXT general manager William Regal was putting the Cruiserweight title on Rush but was stopped by Gulak. Gulak gave the title to Rush and shook his hand.

Rush returned to WWE television on the September 18 episode of NXT. He became the number one contender to the Cruiserweight title by defeating Oney Lorcan.

The Cruiserweight title is now known as the NXT Cruiserweight Championship.

Dave Meltzer reported in Monday’s Daily Update that a new episode of 205 Live is schedule to stream on the WWE Network after SmackDown this Friday. Despite WWE announcing the show’s move to Fridays and two matches being announced, there wasn’t a new 205 Live episode last week.

Two tournament matches set for next week’s WWE 205 Live

The first two matches for the upcoming 205 Live #1 Contender tournament have been announced.

Next week on 205 Live, Kalisto will face Tony Nese and Brian Kendrick will face Drew Gulak in the opening matches of the tournament, which is a single elimination eight man tournamentThe remaining four participants have yet to be announced.

On tonight’s episode of 205 Live, two matches took place that 205 General Manager Drake Maverick said would have big implications coming out of the tournament. In those matches, Humberto Carrillo defeated TJP while Mike Kanellis defeated Cedric Alexander. It seems based on those two wins, they will likely be a part of the tournament.

The eventual winner of the tournament will receive a title match against Buddy Murphy at WrestleMania 35. Murphy has been champion since October 6, winning the title at WWE Super Show-Down in Australia. Most recently, he defeated Akira Tozawa at Elimination Chamber.

205 Live next week will take place at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

WWE announces 205 Live tournament for WrestleMania title shot

An eight man tournament has been announced on 205 Live, where the winner will face Buddy Murphy for the Cruiserweight title at WrestleMania 35.

205 Live General Manager Drake Maverick made the announcement tonight at the start of 205 Live. The tournament will be an eight man, single elimination tournament that will take place over the next six weeks leading to WrestleMania. Two matches were then announced for tonight, with Humberto Carrillo facing TJP and Cedric Alexander taking on Mike Kanellis. Maverick said that these matches would have big implications heading into the tournament, which starts next week.

A similar tournament took place last year to determine a new Cruiserweight champion after Enzo Amore was stripped of the championship and released from the company. Cedric Alexander ended up winning the title, defeating Mustafa Ali in the finals at WrestleMania 34.

Buddy Murphy defeated Akira Tozawa at the Elimination Chamber pre-show this past weekend to successfully retain the title.
