Broken Matt Hardy makes his return on TNA Impact

Broken Matt Hardy has returned to TNA Wrestling.

Matt Hardy has officially brought back his popular broken gimmick. On the latest April 30 episode of TNA Impact, Broken Matt Hardy returned to help his brother Jeff Hardy win his match against Vincent of The Righteous.

For weeks now, the Hardy Boyz have teased going back to their broken state. And now with Broken Matt’s return, things seem to be set in motion. Jeff Hardy also showed signs of returning to his character of Brother Nero.

Several years ago, in 2016, Matt Hardy introduced his Broken gimmick in TNA, which soon became extremely popular among the fans. However, after Matt joined WWE in 2017, he still possessed a limited version of the Broken gimmick, without much creative liberty. He still faced the same limitations when he joined AEW in 2020.

However, upon his return to TNA in 2024, fans saw Matt Hardy re-channel his broken character in his world title match against Moose, which also saw Jeff Hardy’s return to the promotion.

The Big Vinny V Show: TNA Rebellion review

On a new Big Vinny Show, I recap last Saturday’s TNA Rebellion which featured Nic Nemeth challenging Moose for the TNA World title, plus title defenses by TNA Tag Team Champions Eddie Edwards & Brian Myers, Knockouts Champion Jordynne Grace, and X-Division champion Mustafa Ali.

The big news, however, was the return of a trio of TNA legends: four-time tag team champion Mike Santana, former World champion Sami Callihan, and perhaps the most successful gimmick in TNA’s history: “Broken” Matt Hardy.

I discuss those returns, the credentials of some other guest stars, and why 2024 is such a great time to be a wrestling fan.

I also talk about Saturday’s AEW Collision and Rampage episodes, and Tony Khan’s comments on his media call this week including negotiations for a new TV rights package.

On Friday’s WWE SmackDown, The Bloodline saga continued with Solo Sikoa emerging as the new leader of the group, solidifying Roman Reigns’ status as a babyface when he does return.

Plus, WWE made some surprising cuts on Friday during SmackDown, “Broken” Matt Hardy re-emerged in TNA Saturday, and more.

‘Broken’ Matt Hardy returns at TNA Rebellion

Matt Hardy has returned to TNA Wrestling, making a big impact after Saturday’s Rebellion pay-per-view main event.

After Moose was celebrating his successful World title defense over Nic Nemeth, the “lights out” video montage that first aired this week teasing a surprise once again aired and then the lights went out. Hardy then appeared in his “Broken” character, kicked Moose in the gut, and hit his Twist of Fate before holding the TNA World title in celebration.

The 49-year-old’s AEW contract recently expired, making him a free agent. He has spoken frequently about the process and there had been rumors of a potential WWE return.

As of now, TNA has yet to announce any formal signing.

He was last part of TNA Wrestling for nearly four years from 2014-2017. During that time, he held the World title twice and the Tag Team titles twice with brother Jeff Hardy who is currently under AEW contract.

It was the third surprise return of the night as former TNA World Champion Sami Callihan returned during the Knockouts title match and former TNA Tag Team Champion Mike Santana made his own return after nearly five years awa.

Report —

Episode 210 of Being The Elite was released today. Some highlights included:

  • Brandon Cutler, Matt Jackson, Nick Jackson, Kenny Omega and Hangman Page were hanging out backstage before Dynamite. Omega complained about the bad catering and said he wanted baby back ribs. The group burst into song, belting out an old Chili’s restaurant jungle for ribs.
  • The Bucks told Cutler that he was teaming with Peter Avalon against them on tomorrow’s Dark. The Bucks thought he might cry. Cutler made fun of how many matches there are on Dark. I hear you, pal.
  • The bucks were with Luchasaurus at a Denny’s restaurant. Luchasaurus proclaimed himself the king of the claw machine but failed to win a stuffed animal.
  • We got a behind the scenes look at the filming of another commercial for the AEW action figure line.
  • Matt was shooting a video backstage. Nick approached and said that he used Matt’s blading trick to jump the line at airport security.
  • Cutler and Omega were about to try a new pre-workout. Matt entered. Cutler and Omega tried to get him to take the pre-workout. Matt said he and his brother are Christian AF.
  • Nick told Private Party that he was dead ass.
  • Alex Reynolds and John Silver approached Orange Cassidy backstage and tried to recruit him to Dark Order. Cassidy wasn’t interested until he heard that every Friday, Dark Order watches every Fast and Furious movie. Reynolds and Silver offered Kool-Aid. Cassidy knocked the Kool-Aid over and refused the offer.
  • We saw highlights from Dynamite.
  • Page approached Mr. Brodie Lee backstage and complimented his gear. Page said that he had applied to join Dark Order months ago but had never heard back. Lee was upset that he had missed the chance to recruit Page. Lee hit Silver and Reynolds with stacks of paper and chewed them out for missing the chance.
  • Frankie Kazarian ran into Cutler backstage. Kazarian was doing what may have been a Michael Hayes impression.
  • Damascus approached Nick and said that Nick was Harry Houdini, the original merch freak and a carny. Damascus used broken brilliance to explain the term.
  • Alex Abrahantes, Santana and Ortiz explained another Spanglish term, “ordere.” Silver and Reynolds thought they were speaking about them.
  • Colt Cabana appeared and entered The Elite’s dressing room. He walked in on them singing the Chili’s jingle.

The Name Game: Making sense of IP and the pro wrestling business

Written by Steve Te Tai for F4WOnline.com

Recent years have seen the subject of IP as a hot topic again with several situations involving wrestlers moving through different promotions including Cody Rhodes, Hornswoggle, Ryback, El Cuervo, and the Bullet Club among others, and of course “Broken” Matt Hardy & Brother Nero. In the majority of these situations, names are changed which means we get Cody, Swoggle, the Big Guy, Phantasma Jr, the Club, and the old Hardy Boyz instead of the more updated version.

Fans have become largely accustomed to this process ever since Vince McMahon and WWE standardized this concept. Occasionally, situations arise that puzzle or frustrate the fans such as when Rhodes found himself unable to use his famous wrestling last name despite his father being the legendary Dusty Rhodes and his brother Dustin wrestling for decades as members of the Rhodes family.

Unfortunately for Cody, his first official wrestling match was for OVW, the then-territorial system for the WWF/E, which made the name “Cody Rhodes” the IP of WWE.

To see how this started, you have to go back to the 1980s where McMahon normalized the practice of a wrestling promotion creating new names for their wrestlers. For decades prior, wrestlers created their own personas and nicknames and and like any actor or athlete, your name went with you. But as the 80s progressed, wrestlers joining the WWF saw their names change more and more.

When Curt Hennig was brought in, he became Mr. Perfect, the Dingo Warrior became the Ultimate Warrior, the Sheepherders became the Bushwhackers, Big Bubba Rogers became the Big Boss Man, and so on.

As the decade ended, it was almost a given that if you joined WWF, you would be given a new name. But what this change really meant for the industry wouldn’t be understood until years later when the Ultimate Warrior left and found he was no longer the Ultimate Warrior.

McMahon started this practice for two main reasons. The first was to distinguish the WWF as a world separate and different from the rest of the wrestling community. The second was by creating new names for these wrestlers, the names were legally the intellectual property of the WWF, which gave them exclusive rights to license and merchandise their character.

The name “The Ultimate Warrior” was the IP of the WWF because ultimately usage comes down to when it was done first, and with that legal reality, the Ultimate Warrior re-named himself Warrior in his WCW run. His look and “Warrior” name were established prior to his WWF run, so he had all rights to that sans the “Ultimate” part.

The wrestling world began to understand the new reality that with any talent movement between these major wrestling promotions, a name created and debuted in one organization was the intellectual property of that organization and would not go with them if they left.

The difference with real names

If it’s your real name, you own it which is what makes the sports world a lot simpler. Kevin Durant didn’t have to change his name when he joined Golden State and Chael Sonnen didn’t become Chael P. when he signed with Bellator. Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Jeff Jarrett, Jerry Lawler, Bobby Roode, and many more wrestled under their real names, so name ownership was never an issue with them.

What about CM Punk, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, and Sting?

They used those names from the starts of their careers prior to joining a major wrestling promotion. As long as you use the name once prior to joining a “publishing house” like New Japan, WWF or GFW, the name belongs to you. If you keep that name depends on the deal they make with their new home. Sometimes you get to stay as Shinsuke Nakamura while other times, you end up as Hideo Itami.

If New Japan owns the Bullet Club, how did they keep that name in GFW and ROH?

The Bullet Club was born in NJPW and therefore, NJPW owns and controls the rights to that name. Like GFW, New Japan has had working partnerships with multiple promotions over the years and woud allow these partners to use their IP. That’s why Big Van Vader competed in WCW but when New Japan’s partnership with WCW ended, he simply became Vader.

Because of this partnership, when Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows wrestled for GFW and ROH, they were the Bullet Club. But since there was no such deal with the WWE, Doc and Karl hooked up with AJ Styles as simply The Club.

But didn’t Finn Balor create the Bullet Club?

When Balor was in NJPW as Prince Devitt, he indeed was the face of the Bullet Club and was their first leader, spokesman and architect of the group that still exists to this day. One could say creatively he may have been the prime driving force along with Gedo, the head of NJPW creative. Regardless of who all played a part in the creation of this character, it was created and debuted in New Japan and is therefore their IP.

*******

Before I joined the wrestling industry many years ago, I worked in the comic book industry and and always appreciated the similarities to wrestling in how comics also operate as a roster of characters controlled by creative who receive pushes, gimmick changes, and sell merch with ongoing storylines told episodically in a “universe”. And when it comes to the legal ownership of characters, wrestling and comics have even more in common.

Marvel continues to churn out movies, TV, licensing, merchandise, comics, and cartoons, from the Spider-Man character. And what many people are aware of is Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee along with artist Steve Ditko and others playeing their part as well. But even with Lee publicly acknowledged as the creator of this character, Spider-Man is still the IP of Marvel, because he was created for Marvel while working at Marvel.

So, no matter who creates, designs, and writes a character under Marvel, DC, or anybody, the company always owns that character. And if there was any dispute, a 2013 court case re-affirmed that the creator is irrelevant as far as ownership and rights.

Lee is constantly credited with the creation of these characters and is lauded and heralded by Marvel as such, given a lifetime ambassador job with a hefty salary. But, it does not change the fact that he never owned these characters, Marvel did.

What about the Superman case?

The key difference between Superman and other characters is that Jerry Siegel & Joe Schuster actually created Superman before he debuted in DC. Back in the 1930s, these two sold the character to DC Comics. In a weird sense, Superman is to comics what CM Punk or AJ Styles is to WWE where the name was created before he joined the company.

With ongoing public situations like the Hardys’ Broken characters, it can be frustrating to wrestling fans to see talent switch to a new company and no longer be identified by their favorite names. For better or for worse, this is the reality that wrestling adopted in the 80s by McMahon and is the standard for how wrestling operates to this day.

Preview by Joseph Currier

TNA presents its first pay-per-view of the Anthem era tonight with a One Night Only show taking place live at the Impact Zone in Orlando, Florida.

The show will be headlined by TNA World Champion Eddie Edwards putting his title on the line against EC3. Other titles will up for grabs as well, with Rosemary defending the Knockouts Championship against Sienna, Eli Drake & Tyrus challenging The Broken Hardys for their tag titles, and DJZ putting his X Division title on the line in a fatal four-way match.

Elsewhere on the show, Bobby Lashley will face Davey Richards and Moose will take on “The Miracle” Mike Bennett in a no holds barred match.

Tonight’s PPV is part of a marathon period of tapings for TNA that kicked off with last night’s episode of Impact and will continue into next week.

Our live coverage begins tonight at 8 p.m. ET.

**********

Bobby Lashley defeated Davey Richards

Before the match, Lashley reminds us that Davey returned last night and prevented him from winning the World Championship. He claimed that Eddie is avoiding him but he gets the next best thing, Davey Richards.

Lashley jumped Richards to start the match. This was Richards’ first match back after suffering an ACL injury a year ago. Richards made a brief comeback and went for a handspring back elbow but Lashley caught him in the torture rack. Richards gained the advantage and hit three awesome suicide dives, rolling through on the last one. Lashley and Richards fought on the side of the ring until Lashley gave Davey an intense looking powerslam on the apron. Richards locked on an ankle lock, but Lashley fought off. He went for a spear but his leg gave out. Richards locked on the ankle lock again, however Lashley countered into an armbar for the submission win.

X Division Champion DJ Z defeated Andrew Everett, Braxton Sutter, and Trevor Lee in a four-way elimination match to retain his title

The match started off with DJ Z and Sutter working together against Lee and Everett. Sutter and DJ Z cleared the ring and went one-on-one. DJ Z went for the ZDT on Lee, but he threw him off and DJ Z rolled up Everett to eliminate him from the match. Lee knocked out DJ Z on the floor and worked over Sutter in the ring. Sutter blocked a ZDT attempt but Lee rocked Sutter with a knee and rolled him up for the next elimination. The final two are Lee and DJ Z. Lee was in control of the match until DJ Z hit the ZDT to retain the X Division Championship.

– Backstage, Davey and Eddie were talking. Richards was upset because he lost his match earlier and feels like he’s just a sidekick to Edwards. Edwards calmed him down and had something to tell him.

Bram defeated Robbie E

Robbie came out and made an open challenge to anyone in The DCC. Bram came out alone to accept the challenge but decided he wants the night off. Robbie E jumped off the top onto Bram to start the match. Bram took over and dominated a majority of the match. Bram hit move after move but Robbie kept kicking out, which frustrated Bram. Bram hit a low blow and followed up with the Brighter Side of Suffering to win the match.

– Jeremy Borash interviewed Mike Bennett and Maria. Bennett said Moose only retained the title last night because of crooked judges. He promised tonight will be different.

Moose defeated “The Miracle” Mike Bennett w/ Maria Kanellis in a no holds barred match

This match is not for the Impact Grand Championship. Moose put Bennett on a ladder that was wedged between the ring and guardrail. Moose missed a flip dive and crashed on the ladder. Moose made a comeback and set the ladder up in the corner. Bennett charged at Moose, but he backdropped Bennett into the ladder. Bennett tried to powerbomb Moose off the stairs onto a table but Moose countered into a backdrop sending Bennett through the table.

Moose set up a table in the ring. He ran up the turnbuckles and leaped off the top, but Bennett gave him a cutter through the table. Moose made a comeback and had the match won but Maria broke up the count. Bennett tired to spear Moose but he moved and Bennett speared Maria instead. Moose hit the Game Changer to score the win in a really good match.

– Backstage, Eli Drake revealed that his mystery partner to face the Broken Hardys is “The Fixer” Tyrus.

 Mahabali Shera defeated Marshe Rocket

Before the match, Marshe Rocket said he’s the hottest commodity in TNA and he promises this is going to be his year. Marshe was in control of the match until Shera made a comeback and hit the Sky High to win the match.

– TNA Hall of Famer Gail Kim made her way to the ring. She is here to answer questions about her possible retirement. She’s not medically cleared to wrestle but she will be back to regain her Knockouts Championship. This brought out Knockouts Champion Rosemary. Rosemary and Gail had a brief confrontation but referees quickly broke it up.

Knockouts Champion Rosemary defeated Sienna to retain her title

They fought on the ramp to start the match. Rosemary bit Sienna on the face but Sienna gained control with a Samoan drop. Sienna hit the Silencer but it sent Rosemary to the outside. Sienna pushed the referee out of the way and Rosemary spit the mist in Sienna eyes. Rosemary hit the Red Wedding to retain the Knockouts Championship.

James Storm w/ The DCC defeated Jesse Godderz

Jesse had the brief advantage in the match until Storm took over. Bram and Eddie Kingston interfered constantly in the match. Godderz started to build up momentum and knocked down both Bram and Kingston. Godderz locked on the Boston crab and Kingston and Bram tried to interfere but he fought them off. Storm caught Godderz with the Last Call superkick to score the win. Suddenly, the lights went out and Decay appeared in the ring. They spit mist in the eyes of Storm and Bram then double teamed Kingston.

– Jeremy Borash interviewed Ethan Carter III about his upcoming title shot against Eddie Edwards. He promised to win the championship tonight.

TNA World Tag Team Champions The Broken Hardys defeated Eli Drake & “The Fixer” Tyrus to retain their titles

Before the match, Broken Matt said The Hardys are on an odyssey to become the greatest team in all of space and time. He called his opponents the L.O.D., which stands for Legion of Dummies. Tyrus threw his shirt at The Pope before the match. Matt bit Eli’s finger to gain the early advantage in the match. Tyrus tagged in and worked over Jeff. Matt got the hot tag and ran wild until Tyrus cut him off.

Eli demanded to be tagged in and went for a Twist of Fate but Matt pushed him into Tyrus. Matt and Jeff both hit the Twist of Fate on Eli and Jeff followed up with a swanton. Matt scored the win to retain the Tag Championship.

– J.B. interviewed Eddie Edwards before the match. He promised to retain the title to prove who is the true champion and there will be no controversy.

TNA World Heavyweight Champion Eddie Edwards defeated Ethan Carter III to retain his title

Josh and The Pope pointed out that if EC3 loses, that’ll mean he lost two title matches in 24 hours. Lashley watched the match from ringside. Edwards dropped EC3 back first on the apron and worked over the injured back from last night. Lashley grabbed Edwards’ leg and the referee went out to yell at Lashley. Edwards hit a suicide dive taking out both Lashley and the referee.

EC3 hit a hangman’s One Percenter but there was no referee to make the count. Lashley entered the ring and handed a chair to EC3 but EC3 threw it away and flipped him off. Lashley speared EC3 and brought the chair back in. Lashley went to hit EC3 with the chair but Davey Richards ran out, took the chair from Lashley, and accidentally hit EC3 with it. Edwards hits the Boston Knee Party to win the match.

Sienna defeated ODB in a Knockouts #1 Contender Match

The referee got knocked down and ODB covered Sienna. Vanguard 1 came out to make the count but the referee pulled him out. Sienna hit ODB with a chair and hits the Silencer to pick up the win.

Lashley caught Edwards on the floor and powerbombed him into the crowd. Lashley speared Edwards through a door and both ended up outside. Lashley and Edwards continued to brawl in the woods, so the rest of the show will continue with them brawling outside.

– TNA Tag Team Champions The Hardys won Tag Team Apocalypto

The match included The Rock & Roll Express, The Helms Dynasty, Decay, The DCC and a few surprises along the way. Lashley and Edwards continued to brawl throughout this match.

The Hardys and the Rock & Rolls chased everyone with fireworks. The Hardys fought the Helms Dynasty all over Cameron including in the back of a pick-up truck, at the city limits, and train tracks. The Bravados sneak into the compound. Spud introduces his partner Swoggle, formerly WWE’s Hornswoggle.

Trevor Lee covers Matt but Skarsgard The Dilapidated Boat makes the save. The Helms Dynasty triple-teams the boat. Matt pushes Shane into the Lake of Reincarnation which leads to The Helms Dynasty turning into Three Count until Lee and Everett turned on Shane. The Rock and Rolls and Hardys battle in a ring set up outside near the volcano. Matt then pins Gibson to eliminate them.

Back in the Dome, Swoggle and Spud eliminate The Bravados and Swoggle turns on Spud, which leads to their elimination.

James Storm and The DCC attack Decay. Suddenly, the guy from the pick-up truck that Decay “killed” a long time ago showed up claiming to be a member of DCC. He was pinned, which eliminated DCC.

Decay, The Hardys, Edwards and Lashley brawled near the volcano when it exploded, sending all the guys flying. Vanguard 1 showed up and shot fireworks at Abyss. Lee and Everett double-teamed Matt until Hurricane Helms made the save to help eliminate Lee and Everett. Lashley and Edwards, still brawling, end up at Matt’s front door.

TNA announces Bound for Glory 2016 with Broken Matt Hardy commercial

TNA’s biggest pay-per-view of the year will take place on October 2nd, the promotion announced on Monday afternoon.

Bound for Glory 2016 will be headlined by Ethan Carter III challenging for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship that is currently held by Bobby Lashley. EC3 earned the right to challenge for the title by winning the Bound for Glory playoff series that had been the focus of Impact in recent weeks.

Though no venue has been officially announced, the show will take place in Orlando, FL.

Orlando is home to TNA’s Impact Zone, but Bound for Glory hasn’t been held there since the inaugural edition in 2005.

Gail Kim will also be inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame over the Bound for Glory weekend. And the event will likely feature the continuation of the Broken Matt Hardy and “Brother Nero” Jeff Hardy saga in some capacity.

TNA released a commercial with Broken Matt Hardy promoting the event:
