WOR Video: The CM Punk saga continues

The tensions in AEW aren’t settling down anytime soon.

After Saturday’s Collision went off the air, CM Punk cut a post-show promo thanking the audience before directing his remarks towards Hangman Page, calling him a “peg warmer” and how nobody buys Page’s merchandise while Punk claimed he was the one driving ticket sales.

On Monday morning’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer talked about the situation. Meltzer reiterated that this was not a storyline.

“Believe me, that is not the case,” Meltzer said. “Every time Punk does something like this it makes things worse…there’s been stuff since day one that’s been going on. A lot of people wanted to keep it quiet but it’s not quiet now because once he did that, things started to come out.”

Page was originally set to be at the Collision tapings on Saturday to do a pre-tape that would air on another AEW show. However, he was later told that the pre-tape had been moved to another building.

Ryan Nemeth was also scheduled to be at Saturday’s tapings, but was told not to go to the building. Back on the debut episode of Collision in June, Nemeth and Punk had words regarding something Nemeth wrote on Twitter that Punk perceived to be aimed at him.

“I was told it was all settled, it wasn’t a big deal. Obviously it was not all settled,” Meltzer said.

Meltzer said this was not the only time this has happened, specifically naming Matt Hardy and Christopher Daniels as two people who were originally booked for the Saturday show, but were later removed.

“How this is going to end, I don’t know. The idea that they are keeping people apart because some people don’t want other people in the dressing room, however this is all going…as far as the people themselves, they believe it’s Punk. Everyone believes it’s Punk. I’m sure Tony [Khan] will say it’s not Punk.”

NJPW crowns winner of G1 Climax 33

Tetsuya Naito has won the G1 Climax tournament for a third time.

In what ended up being a back and forth war, Naito defeated Kazuchika Okada in the finals of this year’s tournament Sunday morning at Sumo Hall. The finish had Naito hit one Destino, only for Okada to kick out. He then followed with two more Destinos and pinned Okada to pick up the victory.

After he was awarded the trophy, as well as the G1 flag by Masahiro Chono, Naito cut a promo thanking the fans at Sumo Hall. Due to Naito winning the tournament, he will now be eligible to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight championship at Wrestle Kingdom 18 on January 4. That championship is currently held by SANADA, Naito’s former teammate in Los Ingobernables de Japon.

During a backstage interview, Naito was confronted by Jeff Cobb challenging him to a match, pointing out that Cobb defeated Naito during the second night of the tournament. When Naito asked when, Cobb said it would be soon before walking off.

As part of this year’s 32-man tournament, Tetsuya Naito placed on top of the D Block and advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Hikuleo. He then defeated Will Ospreay in the semifinals to reach this morning’s finals.

This is Naito’s third G1 tournament win, ha ving previously won in 2013 and in 2017.

AEW’s QT Marshall wins Latin American title at AAA Triplemania XXXI Mexico City

QT Marshall is the new AAA Latin American Champion.

Marshall appeared at Saturday’s AAA Triplemania event in Mexico City, pinning Pentagon Jr. in a match that also featured Dralistico and Brian Cage. The finish of the match had Marshall remove Pentagon’s mask, then pinned him to win the championship.

The Latin American title was held by Fenix until last month, when he announced his departure from AAA due to commitments elsewhere.. The title was vacated as a result.

In the main event, Psycho Clown defeated Sam Adonis in a four-way match that also featured LA Park and Rush. The stipulations of the match were that whoever was pinned in the match either had to lose their mask or their hair. There was a bunch of interference during the bout, including AEW’s Preston Vance making an appearance. The show ended with Psycho Clown being stretchered out due to taking a marionette towards the end of the match and Adonis’ hair being shaved off.

Elsewhere on the card, Flammer defeated Taya Valkyrie to win the AAA Reina de Reinas title. In the co-main event, Hijo Del Vikingo retained the AAA Mega Heavyweight title in a four-way defeating Daga, Speedball Mike Bailey, and Jack Cartwheel.

Darby Allin vs. Christian Cage announced for AEW Collision Fight for the Fallen

Darby Allin will be in action on next week’s Collision.

On Saturday’s show, Allin did a run-in and attacked Luchasaurus after Luchasaurus successfully defended the TNT title against Brock Anderson. After Luchasaurus and Christian Cage retreated, Allin challenged Cage to a match for next week. Cage accepted.

The segment had started with Cage and Luchasaurus coming out out for a promo and ran down Allin, who had earned a TNT Championship match at All Out several weeks ago after winning the Royal Rampage battle royal. This brought out Arn and Brock Anderson. Cage ended up challenging Arn, but Arn instead send out his son, who was eventually pinned by Luchasaurus. After Luchasaurus had successfully defended the title against Anderson, it was confirmed Allin would be facing Luchasaurus at All Out.

Diamante will also take on Willow Nightingale next Saturday. Diamante teamed with Mercedes Martinez on Saturday’s show to take on Nightingale and TBS Champion Kris Statlander. Martinez picked up the victory after Diamante helped Martinez pin Nightingale.

Here is the card so far for next week’s Collision:

  • Willow Nightingale vs. Diamante

The Young Bucks vs. The Gunns added to AEW Dynamite Fight for the Fallen

The Young Bucks will be wrestling on Wednesday.

It was announced on Saturday’s Collision that The Young Bucks will be wrestling The Gunn Club this coming Wednesday on Dynamite. The Young Bucks are set to challenge FTR for the AEW Tag Team titles at All In on August 27.

The Acclaimed will also be in action this Wednesday. After defeating The Iron Savages on Collision, Anthony Bowens and Max Caster said they would continue to climb back up the ranks in the AEW Tag Team division to get back into title contention.

Jey Uso declares he is ‘out of WWE’ on SmackDown

The Bloodline storyline continued further on Friday’s SmackDown.

After Jey Uso got the upper hand against the Bloodline, Jey then laid out his brother Jimmy. Facing the camera, Jey said he was done with the Bloodline, was done with SmackDown, and done with WWE. He then exited through the crowd to end the show.

Jimmy confronted Roman Reigns in the main event of Friday’s SmackDown. Before he could explain why he attacked his twin brother at SummerSlam, Jey arrived and demanded an explanation. Jimmy explained that he prevented Jey from winning because he didn’t want Jey to become the tribal chief, saying that Jey would become just as corrupt as Reigns if he attained that kind of power. Jey turned his back on his brother, causing Jimmy to eventually exit the ring. After Jimmy laid out both Reigns and Solo Sikoa, he motioned Jimmy to come to him. Jimmy did, but was soon met with a superkick by Jey.

At SummerSlam last weekend, Jey hit a splash on Reigns and was about to pin him when Jimmy dragged Jey out of the ring, laying him out with a superkick and allowing Reigns to pick up the victory. The two had spent their entire career in the WWE as a tag team until last Saturday.

Rey Mysterio wins United States title on WWE SmackDown

Rey Mysterio is the new United States Champion.

Mysterio ended Austin Theory’s long run with the title on Friday’s SmackDown after hitting a 619 to the back of Theory, then connected with a second 619 for the win. This ends Theory’s run with the title after 258 days, having defeated Seth Rollins in a match that also featured Bobby Lashley at last year’s Survivor Series. After the match, Mysterio celebrated with the rest of the LWO as pyro went off.

Santos Escobar had won the United States Title Invitational tournament two weeks ago, defeating Mysterio in the finals to set up a match between himself and Theory for this week’s show. In a show-long storyline, Theory attacked Escobar’s leg as Escobar was being interviewed. Although doctors cleared Escobar, another attack by Theory as Escobar was making his way to the ring prevented him from wrestling. WWE official Adam Pearce told Theory he would still defend the title tonight, but it would be against Mysterio.

This is Rey Mysterio’s third run with the United States championship, having last won it in 2019.

AEW announces Fight For the Fallen events, proceeds going to Maui Food Bank

AEW’s television next week will be called Fight for the Fallen.

Tony Khan on Friday afternoon announced that due to the recent wildfires in Maui, Hawaii, he has made the change to next week’s shows. Proceeds from the Dynamite/Rampage tapings in Nashville, TN and Collision in Lexington, KY will go to the Maui Food Bank.

“Based on the horrific fires in Maui, I’ve changed AEW’s upcoming schedule to provide assistance,” Khan wrote on X. “Next week on Wed/Fri/Sat, it’s AEW Fight For The Fallen 2023 on #AEWDynamite #AEWRampage #AEWCollision. Proceeds from AEW on 8/16 Nashville + 8/19 Lexington will go to @MauiFoodBank.”

Dustin Rhodes, who was in Maui with his wife when the wildfires erupted on Tuesday wrote about his experience on X.

“Prayers for everyone in Maui including my wife and I,” Rhodes wrote. “We were without power or food since early Tuesday morning. A brush fire (one of many), destroyed Lahaina just 2 miles from where we were staying. We evacuated to [the] other side of [the] Island and were lucky to find accommodations. Been a helluva day.”

59 people have been confirmed dead from the wildfires in Maui, and at least 11,000 people in the area remain without power, according to the Washington Post.

WOR Video: Between MJF & Adam Cole, someone’s turning

The saga between Adam Cole and MJF continued on AEW Dynamite.

Wednesday’s show saw the two issue a challenge to the ROH Tag Team Champions Aussie Open for a match on the All In Zero Hour, just hours prior to their main event title match. After Roderick Strong confronted Cole and left with The Kingdom, Cole confronted MJF over the way he treated Strong. There was a tense moment, but eventually they hugged it out.

“Someone’s turning here,” Alvarez said on Wrestling Observer Radio Thursday morning.

The question seems to be when, not if the turn is happening. The two were paired together in Blind Eliminator Tag Team title tournament they ended up winning, but failed to win the titles. Despite that, they have remained friends, and it was MJF that offered Cole the title match for All In.

“Don’t rush it,” Meltzer said.

“Every week there’s an issue where the fans chant for them to hug it out,” Alvarez pointed out the continued tension between the two.

“When the ratings start falling, that’s when I would split them,” Meltzer said. I would not split them early, it’s not easy to get something that’s hot.”

Kenny Omega sitdown interview with Jim Ross set for next AEW Dynamite

A sit-down with Kenny Omega is set for next week’s AEW Dynamite.

During Wednesday’s Dynamite,Omega was interviewed by Alex Marvez, who asked about All In. Omega said he would be talking to Jim Ross next week on a number of subjects including Konosuke Takeshita, Don Callis, and All In. Following Blood & Guts last month, The Young Bucks have since decided to move back to tag team competition, leaving Omega as a singles wrestler.

MJF & Adam Cole will also be on next week’s Dynamite talking about the main event of All In, which will see MJF defend the AEW World Championship against Cole. Cole on this week’s Dynamite pitched the idea to MJF on facing Aussie Open for the ROH Tag Team titles at All In’s Zero Hour pre-show event. MJF eventually agreed to the match, issuing the challenge to Aussie Open.

Darby Allin will team with Nick Wayne to take on The Gates of Agony, who are part of the Mogul Embassy with Swerve Strickland and AR Fox, Allin’s future opponents for All In. Britt Baker is also set to take on the returning Bunny, where the winner will advance to the four-way match for the AEW Women’s Championship at All In.

Here is the card so far for next week’s Dynamite, with more to be announced on Friday’s Rampage:

  • Jim Ross sits down with Kenny Omega
  • MJF & Adam Cole to talk about the main event of All In

Sting & Darby Allin vs. Swerve Strickland & AR Fox set for AEW All In

The AEW Tag Team title match is official for All In.

After The Young Bucks defeated The Hardys on Wednesday’s Dynamite, Nick and Matt Jackson started to cut a promo when FTR came out. The two teams had a staredown before Nick Jackson simply said “All In”, confirming the match. FTR had challenged The Young Bucks on Saturday’s Collision, saying they wanted a rubber match.

Sting & Darby Allin will team up in Wembley, taking on Swerve Strickland and AR Fox in what will be a coffin match. Allin confronted The Mogul Embassay on Wednesday and told AR Fox knew the reasons why he never called, crediting Fox getting into AEW by himself. Allin then said he had friends as well, introducing Sting. After Allin chased Fox into the crowd as Sting eliminated the rest of the Mogul Embassay, cornering Swerve and pointing to the All In banner.

MJF & Adam Cole challenge Aussie Open for AEW All In Zero Hour

MJF and Adam Cole may be wrestling twice in the same day.

Cole issued the challenge on Wednesday’s Dynamite to the ROH Tag Team Champions Aussie Open for a match on All In’s pre-show, known as Zero Hour. Cole pitched the idea to MJF who at first balked at the idea of wrestling twice in one night. But he eventually agreed, saying he was a sucker for a cheap pop.

The two are already scheduled to main event All In on August 27. Cole said during the promo that while he’s won the ROH World and Television titles, he’s never held the Tag Team titles, listing some of the top teams who have held that title including Kings of Wrestling and reDRagon. After MJF agreed to the title match, Roderick Strong came out and confronted Cole, upset that he didn’t want to team with him. He left with The Kingdom, who consoled Strong as they walked away.

MJF blew it off and told Cole that he didn’t need Strong, but Cole got mad and shoved MJF, saying that Strong was his friend too. Cole immediately apologized, with MJF shrugging it off and telling Cole to check in on Strong as the promo ended.

Dakota Kai was contacted for WWE SummerSlam hours before show

Dakota Kai had very little time to make it for her SummerSlam cameo.

Kai took to Twitch to detail her SummerSlam experience, where she showed up to congratulate Damage CTRL member IYO SKY after she won the WWE Women’s Championship. She found out that she was wanted for the show at 1 pm Saturday afternoon, the day of the show.

“It’s my sleep in day,” she said. “I’m gonna chill, not even gonna set my alarm. My phone was on ‘Do Not Disturb’…I wake up, my phone is blowing up. My anxiety was just through the roof, I saw all of these missed calls, all these texts…and [Bayley’s] like ‘We need you here!’.

Kai said that there was only one flight that would get her to the pay-per-view on time, Spirit Airlines, an airline that he had never traveled with before. After a flight delay due to mechanical issues, she managed to land in Detroit during the pay-per-view.

“Whatever match was after Shayna and Ronda, we landed,” Kai estimated on when she landed. “And thank goodness, they sent car service to come and get me and then they also had a makeup lady in the car…yes, lucky [SKY winning the title] was semi-main because I definitely wouldn’t have made it, I don’t think.”

At the SummerSlam press conference that took place following the event, Kai said that she was “a ways away” from returning from her torn ACL injury that took place back in May.

Ilja Dragunov vs. Trick Williams set for WWE NXT Heatwave

A match between Dragunov and Williams was made on Tuesday’s NXT. The two will meet on a special edition of NXT called Heatwave, which will take place in two weeks on August 22. Additionally, Noam Dar will meet Nathan Frazer in a match for the NXT Heritage Cup trophy.

Tuesday’s show also saw Tyler Bate defeat Noam Dar for the fake Heritage Cup trophy that the Meta-Four have introduced in recent weeks. In a backstage interview, Dar pleaded with Bate to give him back the trophy. Frazer arrived and told Dar he would make a deal with him where he would grant Dar a match for the real trophy if he admitted his trophy was fake. Dar eventually admitted that Fraszer held the original title that Oro Mensah lost on his behalf.

Here is the current lineup for Heatwave:

  • Ilja Dragunov vs. Trick Williams
  • NXT Heritage Cup: Nathan Fraszer defends against Noam Dar

Lee confronted Hayes after they lost a match against Oro Mensah and Noam Dar on last week’s show. On this week’s show, Lee passed by Trick Williams in the parking lot and told him to tell Hayes he’d take care of him after he took care of Dijak. After Lee left, Williams had a confrontation with Drew Gulak, setting up a match between them for next week as well.

Tony D’Angleo and Stacks will defend the NXT Tag Team titles against The Dyad. The two teams had a confrontation as The Dyad were looking for The Creed Brothers backstage. Later, The Schism attempted to interrogate Ivy Nile as to the whereabouts of the Creeds when D’Angelo and Stacks made the save.
