F4W NEWSLETTER: Figure Four Weekly: All Elite Wrestling becomes official

As the clock struck midnight and we entered 2019, All Elite Wrestling finally became official. Weeks of speculation culminated with AEW being formally announced at the end of a Being the Elite episode that was released at midnight Pacific time on January 1, 2019. With that came the announcement of Double or Nothing, which is the sequel to All In. While there are plenty of questions about what the roster for AEW will look like, the initial group of wrestlers has started to come into focus.

WON NEWSLETTER (ONLINE ONLY): January 7, 2019 Observer Newsletter special: History of the Tokyo Dome – NO HARDCOPY AVAILABLE

When the Tokyo Dome opened on March 17, 1988, the idea of pro wrestling there wasn’t even an idea.

The Dome was built to be the new modern home of two baseball teams, the Yomiuri Giants of the Central League, the team of Shigeo Nagashima and Sadaharu Oh years earlier, the unofficial national team that had all its games on NTV, and sold out every game. The Dome held 48,316 fans for baseball, but for years, every single Giants game announced the attendance as 56,000. The other team, the Nippon Ham Fighters of the Pacific League, which played there through the 2003 season, were the ones that the average person could get tickets to see.

The idea was baseball and concerts, the Rolling Stones (who have 19 Tokyo Dome sellouts), Michael Jackson (who sold 405,000 tickets for nine dates in December 1988), U2, Madonna and Japanese artists. But while it has housed numerous sporting events, including NFL and Major League Baseball, with the exception of baseball and concerts, it’s probably best known for pro wrestling.

Pro wrestling was still huge on television back then. All Japan, headed by Giant Baba, was a fixture on Nippon TV, one of the major networks. New Japan, on TV-Asahi, had matches airing in prime time.

NXT Tag Team title match set for TakeOver: Phoenix

The tag team title match for TakeOver: Phoenix has been set.

General Manager William Regal made the announcement during tonight’s episode of NXT. The War Raiders will get another crack at the Undisputed Era’s Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong.

The War Raiders have been feuding with all of Undisputed Era for the last few months. Back at the September tapings, the duo defeated the champions by DQ. They later squared off inside War Games, where they, Pete Dunne and Ricochet defeated the entire stable.

On tonight’s episode of NXT, the War Raiders made the save for E3 after all of the Undisputed Era jumped following a match against Adam Cole.

The only other matches announced for TakeOver thus far are is the NXT title match between champion Tommaso Ciampa and Aleister Black, as well as Shayna Baszler defending the NXT Women’s championship against Bianca Belair.

PAC appears at All Elite Wrestling rally

PAC made an appearance at today’s All Elite Wrestling rally.

Hangman Page on stage and was talking about becoming the first ever AEW World champion when PAC’s Dragon Gate music hit. That was when he came out in full gear, sporting Dragon Gate’s Open the Dream Gate championship.

PAC said he was here in AEW and that he was already a champion. The two then had a staredown before PAC made his exit. Hangman said if that was meant to be some sort of challenge, he accepts. It isn’t clear at this time if PAC has officially signed with the promotion.

Formerly known as Neville in the WWE, PAC officially left the promotion last August after spending nearly a year at home due to contract disputes. Since then, he was wrestled mainly for Dragon Gate, winning their top title back on December 4.

During the rally, it was announced that the first show under the AEW banner, Double or Nothing, would take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 25.

KUSHIDA set to face Hiroshi Tanahashi in final NJPW match

KUSHIDA’s final match with New Japan will be against the top heavyweight in the promotion: IWGP heavyweight champion Hiroshi Tanahashi.

The match will take place during The Road to New Beginning tour that will take place on January 29 at Korakuen Hall, just a few days before KUSHIDA’s contract with New Japan expires. It isn’t known where he is headed, but Dave Meltzer reported last month that WWE had interest in signing KUSHIDA.

Other highlights of The Road to New Beginning tour include elimination matches between the Los Ingobernables de Japon and Suzuki-gun stables that will take place on 1/28 at Korakuen Hall and 2/7 in Aichi.

A rematch from New Year Dash will also take place, as NEVER six man tag team champions Guerrillas of Destiny and Taiji Ishimori take on Togi Makabe, Toru Yano and Ryusuke Taguchi on 1/30 in Miyagi. On the same card, BUSHI will take on El Desperado and Shingo Takagi will face Yoshinobu Kanemaru in singles bouts.

EC3, Lacey Evans wrestle in dark matches prior to WWE Raw

Two of the NXT stars slated to be called up in the near future wrestled prior to Raw tonight in Orlando, Florida.

Natalya pinned Lacey Evans to start off the night. EC3 then pinned Curt Hawkins in the next match. Despite initial reports, these will not air on Main Event this week and are only dark matches.

The two, along with Heavy Machinery, Lars Sullivan and Nikki Cross, are set to be called up to the main roster in the next few weeks. Vignettes have been airing on both Raw and Smackdown for the last month.

Some of the wrestlers appeared to say their goodbyes over the weekend during NXT house show events. In Atlanta, EC3 and the War Raiders defeated the Undisputed Era and did their chant with them after the match. On the same card, Lacey Evans tagged with Aaliyah in a losing effort to Kairi Sane and Xia Li.

Meanwhile, Heavy Machinery said goodbye to the crowd in Jacksonville, Florida after defeating the Forgotten Sons.

Takashi Iizuka to retire next month

Takashi Iizuka will wrap up his career next month.

NJPW Chairman Naoki Sugabayashi announced during a press conference tonight that Iizuka is retiring, and will be holding his retirement ceremony on February 21 during a New Japan Road event at Korakuen Hall. It isn’t known what his final match will be.

Iizuka trained at the NJPW dojo and had his first match for the promotion on November 2, 1986, facing Akira Nogami. He would go on to win the IWGP tag team championship three times: first with Riki Choshu in 1989, a second time with Kazuo Yamazaki in 1996 and a third with Toru Yano in 2012, who he also held the GHC tag team championships with.

Iizuka underwent a gimmick transformation when he turned on then stablemate Hiroyoshi Tenzan  in 2008, shaving his head and adopting a wildman persona, running through the crowd during entrances and ignoring rules, often using his iron fingers of death for DQ finshes. He first aligned himself with the CHAOS stable upon the transformation, then turned on them to join Suzuki-gun in 2014.

Since Suzuki-gun returned from NOAH in 2017, he has mostly wrestled in tag team matches in the undercard.

Kenny Omega says he’s leaving NJPW

Kenny Omega says he is leaving New Japan Pro Wrestling.

In a new article on Tokyo Sport’s website, Omega says following his loss to Hiroshi Tanahashi at Wrestle Kingdom 13, he needs to take time away. The article also mentions that he is likely to go to either All Elite Wrestling or WWE.

“There is no real place for me to fit, so it’s best for me not to be in (NJPW),” Omega is quoted as saying. “I can’t be there working under Tanahashi. I don’t think he’s surpassed me, don’t think he’s better. If we can, I want to face him again. But I need time away, and not just from New Japan.”

His departure comes as the most of the Elite stable are leaving the promotion to start All Elite Wrestling. Cody, The Young Bucks and Hangman Page all lost their respective matches at Wrestle Kingdom and did not appear the following day at New Year’s Dash. Marty Scurll remains under ROH contract.

Omega’s contract with NJPW expires at the end of the month.

NJPW notes: Future programs, YOSHI-HASHI, Bullet Club

A number of new programs were started earlier this morning at New Japan Dash.

The theme of the main event centered around the return of YOSHI-HASHI to the promotion, who had been gone since September with a bad concussion following a bad fall. Despite the big return, he was pinned by Jay White in a six man tag team match main event.

White made it clear after the match that he was targeting Hiroshi Tanahashi’s newly won IWGP Heavyweight title. Bad Luck Fale laid out Kazuchika Okada with the grenade after he tried to make the save for Tanahashi, who was attacked by Fale, Gedo and White.

Meanwhile, Suzuki-gun’s targets for 2019 are Los Ingobernables de Japon, who currently hold the bulk of New Japan’s titles. Taichi made Naito’s next program crystal clear, hitting him with a steel chair to kick off a ten man tag team match featuring the two groups. Taichi stunned everyone by pinning Naito with the black mephisto (air raid clash), setting up a future title match.

The Rev Pro tag team champions Zack Sabre Jr. and Minoru Suzuki attacked new IWGP tag team champions SANADA and EVIL after the match, while former El Desperado and Yoshinobu Kanemaru attacked new Jr. tag champions Shingo Takagi and BUSHI, setting up title programs in both divisions.

In addition, Yuji Nagata and Tomohiro Ishii had to be pulled apart after their tag match, while Hirooki Goto and Jeff Cobb also exchanged words.

The only angle of the show involved Yujiro Takahashi and Chase Owens. After leaving Hangman Page and Marty Scurll to dry during Wrestle Kingdom 13’s pre-show, they made it clear where their allegiance lies after helping the Guerrillas of Destiny and Taiji Ishimori retain the NEVER six-man tag team titles, pushing Togi Makabe off the top rope with Chase Owens leaving Togi Makabe lying following the package piledriver. Both Owens and Yujiro celebrated with the Bullet Club after the match, rejoining the stable.

NJPW New Year Dash live results: Wrestle Kingdom 13 fallout

The start of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s direction for 2019 begins this morning at Korakuen Hall.

New Year Dash will feature a number of matches, usually multi-man tag team bouts featuring stars who completed the previous night at the Tokyo Dome. There usually isn’t anything noteworthy about the matches themselves. But in recent years, big angles have taken place on the show that pave the way for the rest of the year.

Some big angles that have gone down in the last couple of years include Jay White rejecting Kenny Omega’s offer to join the Bullet Club (later siding with CHAOS, then restructuring the Bullet Club under his command) and the return of Suzuki-gun after an extended leave of absence.

Most matches won’t be announced until the show begins. However, a NEVER Six Man tag team title match has been confirmed for the show. Former tag team champions The Guerrillas of Destiny and new Jr. heavyweight champion Taiji Ishimori will defend their titles against the makeshift team that won yesterday’s pre-show gauntlet: Togi Makabe, Toru Yano and Ryusuke Taguchi.

The action begins at 4:30 a.m. ET. There will be English commentary.

**********

The main event will feature the return of YOSHI-HASHI, who was been out most of the fall following a concussion after a bad fall. He will team with Kazuchika Okada and Hiroshi Tanahashi against Jay White, Bad Luck Fale and Gedo.

None of the Elite stable are on tonight’s card.

Roppongi 3K and Rocky Romero defeated KES and Takashi Iizuka

Stunningly, Suzuki-gun quickly take it to the outside, resulting in a brawl. Archer chokeslammed Romero onto the apron. Iizuka came in and bit everyone. Heels controlled a lot of this one, with DBS even scoring a nearfall after a powerslam off the middle rope.

Rocky turned the tides with a suicide dive to the outside, taking out Archer. Iizuka went in and started to bite everyone, but he went to the well once too often as YOH grabbed him and rolled him up for the surprise win.

DBS was not happy after the match, destroying a young lion with a powerslam on the floor. Archer took out some as well.

Chase Owens and Yujiro Takahashi defeated Tomoaki Honma and Toa Henare

Before the match, Chase Owens indicated and he and Yujiro were done with Hangman Page and I guess the rest of the Elite. They’re still wearing Bullet Club gear despite being away from that group for months so who knows about these two.

Owens and Yujiro were in control for a bulk of the match. Even Pieter got involved. Honma got back and made the hot tag. He’s been protected in a lot of these tag matches but you can tell his best days are over just by seeing the way he moves in the ring.

Honma hit a kokeshi as Henare and Chase were tagged in. Owens put Henare in an ankle lock but Honma broke it up. Yujiro helped take Honma out as Henare went for a backslide. Owens countered with a superkick then pinned Henare with the package piledriver. Pretty decent.

Juice Robinson and David Finlay defeated Best Friends by DQ

Baretta gave a shout out to his mom, who was in the crowd, before the match. At one point during the match, he exited the ring and gave his mom a hug, which Chuckie T didn’t like.

Baretta gave Finlay a double foot stomp as he was draped on a guardrail. They continued to work on him, including a cool looking northern lights suplex when Finlay was on the top rope. The champion and future challenger went at it, exchanging chops.

Robinson countered the dudebuster then blocked a high knee with a punch. Finlay tagged in and was getting the better of Beretta when Chucky T ran in again with a chair for the DQ.

Chucky grabbed more chair and he was laying waste to Finlay. Robinson took away a chair, and as he and Beretta were arguing Chucky threw a chair at Robinson, taking him out. Beretta tried to get Chucky to the back, but then he fled back and gave Finlay a piledriver on a chair.

Will Ospreay, Tomohiro Ishii and Hirooki Goto defeated Yuji Nagata, Jeff Cobb and KUSHIDA

KUSHIDA and Will Ospreay started things off. Ospreay tagged in Ishii, who didn’t sell KUSHIDA’s offense. KUSHIDA was worked over until he springboarded onto Ishii and Ospreay and tagged in Nagata.

Nagata and Ishii went at it, pummeling each other with punches and kicks. Cobb and Goto followed, KUSHIDA and Ospreay had a great sprint, with Cobb coming in and giving a great assist with a wheelbarrow into a moonsault by KUSHIDA for a near fall.

KUSHIDA tried for the back to the future but Ospreay cut him off and with Ishii hit a standing corkscrew moonsault, then soon followed with the stormbreaker for the win. Judging by taking the fall here I guess you can bring up questions about KUSHIDA’s future, as rumors have been swirling. This was a really good match, by the way, better than it had any right to be.

Ishii and Nagata had to be seperated after the match. Cobb and Goto also exchanged words, so those are future programs.

Guerrillas of Destiny and Taiji Ishimori defeated Togi Makabe, Toru Yano and Ryusuke Taguchi to retain the NEVER six-man tag team titles

One of the stories of the match was that Tama Tonga has turned over a new leaf, and is now going by The Good Guy Tama Tonga, so he was apprehensive in doing anything heelish. Taguchi and Ishimori went it, with Jado doing his spot with the kendo stick on Taguchi.

Makabe went for a pinfall after hitting Loa with a lariat, but Ishimori pulled the referee out of the ring. Jado came in, but was taken out by Yano. Makabe was going for the King Kong knee drop, but Owens and Yujiro came in to interfere, with Owens laying out Makabe with the package piledriver. Loa then hit his finish on Makabe for the win.

Owens, Yujiro and the rest of the Bullet Club reunited after the match, so there’s your answer on them.

Minoru Suzuki, Zack Sabre Jr., El Desperado, Yoshinobu Kanemaru and Taichi defeated Tetsuya Naito, EVIL, SANADA, Shingo Takagi and BUSHI

Taichi started by match by hitting Naito square in the head with a chair. Cool. Suzuki and SANADA brawled into the hallway as Taichi choked Naito with a chair on the floor. Sabre and Suzuki worked as a team, doing a double leg scissors on BUSHI.

After spending a lot of the match brawling around the ring, SANADA and Suzuki wrestled in the ring. Sabre and EVIL followed, then Taichi and Naito again. Taichi distracted the referee as Taka introduced the IC title into the ring. Taichi grabbed it, hit Naito with it and hit the black mephisto (air raid clash) for the win.

So yes, Tachi is probably next in line for an IC title shot. First reaction to that is repulsion. Second reaction is morbid curiosity.

Desperado and Kanemaru laid out Shingo and BUSHI, while EVIL and SANADA were taken out by Sabre and Suzuki. So those two are your future programs.

Taichi grabs a microphone and mentions how easily it was to beat Naito tonight. He said to hand the belt to him and he’ll control it. Suzuki then said Suzuki-gun is ichiban.

Jay White, Bad Luck Fale and Gedo defeated Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi and YOSHI-HASHI

YOSHI-HASHI was tagged in soon after the bell and went after White, but it soon went to the outside with everyone trading blows. Gedo ended up hitting YH with chairs on the insider then posted him before sending him back in the ring.

Heels worked over YH until he made a hot tag to Okada, who immediately took care of Gedo. Tanahashi and Jay White went at it soon after. White issued a challenge to Tanahashi after last night’s main event, so that is likely the big match next month.

It went back to YOSHI-HASHI and Jay White. YH built offense, but White cut him off and went for the blade runner when Okada ran in. Tanahashi laid out White as YH hit a lariat and hit a new move, a brainbuster into a death valley driver for a nearfall.

YH went for karma but White grabbed the ref. YH responded with a superkick but couldn’t hit karma, with White drilling him with a suplex then pinning him with the blade runner for the win.

White says he’s better than Tanahashi and this his his era and the belt he has is his. He called him an old man as he walked back to the ring. Like a dope, Tanahashi walked into the ring with Fale right there and ended up getting jumped by Gedo. Okada ran in for the save, but Fale took him out with the grenade, so we’re seeing that again soon in what feels like an annual tradition.
White held up the IWGP title and emphasized this was his new era as the show closed.

A good, fast paced show. Unless you want to paint Owens and Yujiro rejoining the Bullet Club as a big angle, there wasn’t one this year. The big story of this show is Jay White and the Bullet Club — they’re going all the way with White as the top guy, which…I’m not too sure of. But that’s their goal for this year.

Really interesting there were no members of the Elite present; the biggest story here is probably about who wasn’t here more than anything else.

Kota Ibushi suffered concussion at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 13

Kota Ibushi has been diagnosed with a concussion following his match at Wrestle Kingdom 13.

New Japan issued a short statement this afternoon on their Japanese website saying that Ibushi suffered a concussion during his match against Will Ospreay. They say it is not serious, though he was stretchered out after the match.

It isn’t known when Ibushi got the concussion. One of the more memorable spots of the match was Ospreay wailing Ibushi win the back of the head with an elbow. Ibushi finished the match, but lost the NEVER title to Ospreay following a stormbreaker.

Ibushi’s most recent injury was a cervical disc herniation that he suffered back in late 2015. When he recovered, he resigned from NJPW and worked dates as a freelancer, including appearing in WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic tournament.

He later returned to NJPW in late 2016, first appearing as Tiger Mask W. He made his official return to the promotion during the 2017 G1 Climax tournament.

NJPW running back-to-back shows at Tokyo Dome in 2020

For the first time in New Japan’s history, their annual 1/4 event will now run on two consecutive nights inside the Tokyo Dome.

Prior to the main card of Wrestle Kingdom 13, New Japan showed a video highlighting tour dates through August. But they saved the biggest news for last: Wrestle Kingdom 14 will be held on two consecutive nights. January 4 and 5, 2020.

This would be a big change in format from recent years. New Japan has ran the Wrestle Kingdom on January 4 while New Year’s Dash, a more angle-heavy show featuring tag team matches, usually runs the next day at Korakuen Hall.

Other dates announced include:

  • The New Beginning in Sapporo on February 2 and 3
  • The New Beginning in Osaka on February 11
  • New Japan Cup in Niigata on March 23 and 24
  • ROH/NJPW G1 Supercard at Madison Square Garden in New York City on April 6

I believe that more than talent…more than chance…work ethic will guide me where i’d like to go,” he wrote on Twitter. “To be Executive Vice President for our new venture, and to be flanked by Matt and Nick and a few familiar names sharing that position; this is my dream job. I can’t think of a time when so many of wrestling’s top free agents all opted out of the road usually traveled and instead wanted to start something new. I am excited to see AEW into existence.

“What’s old isn’t new – what’s new is new. Perception isn’t reality – reality is reality. Fans first” he concluded.

The statement, which confirms Cody’s role as Executive Vice President, comes as the Elite confirmed through a video that was uploaded at midnight PST on 1/1 that All Elite Wrestling is real, and the first show under that banner will be called Double or Nothing.

There will be further announcements regarding AEW and Double or Nothing next week at a Double or Nothing rally, which will take in the parking lot in front of West Club at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida. The advertisement notes that the rally will feature an announcement from The Elite,. and that there would be special guests.

WWE Raw live results: Ziggler vs. McIntyre steel cage match

Tonight’s New Year’s Eve episode of Raw was taped at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan this past Friday.

Former tag team partners Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre face off in a steel cage match on the episode. Last week, both were involved in a triple threat match that was won by Finn Balor. McIntyre targeted Ziggler after the match, but Ziggler laid him out with the Zig-Zag.

McIntyre was officially announced for the men’s Royal Rumble match last week. The build to the pay-per-view will continue on tonight’s episode.

WWE will follow up on Ronda Rousey defeating Natalya in their Raw Women’s Championship match last week. A performance by Elias is also being promoted for tonight, along with Seth Rollins having unfinished business with Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose. Rollins lost the title to Ambrose at TLC earlier this month, and WWE has announced that there will be no more automatic rematches.

Our coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

The cage lowered for the steel cage match as the announcers ran down the Royal Rumble card.

Drew McIntyre defeated Dolph Ziggler in a steel cage match

Ziggler immediately tried to escape the cage, but McIntyre blocked him. He also tried to escape, but Ziggler thwarted his plans. Both men crotched themselves as they fell to the floor.

Ziggler gained control, hitting a famouser. He tries to escape, but McIntyre intercepted and laid out Ziggler with a headbutt. Ziggler tried to escape again, but McIntyre used the cage door and rammed it into Ziggler’s head.

Back from break, Ziggler struggled to escape as McIntyre grabbed him and dropped to the floor with a giant superplex off the cage. McIntyre then rammed him into the cage head first, telling him he won’t get away that easy. Ziggler came alive with a zig zag for a nearfall.

McIntyre out of nowhere then drilled Ziggler with the claymore kick. McIntyre then took his time as Ziggler recovered, then hit a second for the pinfall win. This was a pretty solid match, but nothing special.

After the match, Ziggler yelled at McIntyre “Is that all you got?”. McIntyre responded by returning to the cage, pinning Ziggler with a chair against the cage and drilling him with another claymore kick.

McIntyre took a microphone after the match and said he was the king of the Raw jungle. He told Ziggler to walk away, but he kept trying to get his scraps. Ziggler doesn’t even deserve his scraps, he said.

He said this chapter was closed, but it is now time to prove he is the king of the WWE. He said he would win the Royal Rumble match and fulfill his destiny by winning the Universal championship. McIntyre then left Ziggler lying with one last claymore kick.

Shane McMahon and Triple H arrived in a limo.

Finn Balor’s new year’s resolution is to win the Universal title again (good luck). Ember Moon said hers is to win the women’s Royal Rumble. The Ascension wants the tag titles, while the Lucha House Party just said 2019 will be their year.

Seth Rollins came out to talk. He mentioned the term “fresh start” and eventually said he wanted another shot at Ambrose. This brought out Triple H. He mentions there’s no more anything — his automatic rematch for the IC title isn’t happening.

Hunter said that he doesn’t think Seth deserves a rematch anything. He was always his most vocal supporter. Rollins brought up their history, saying he only used him as a puppet. Hunter said Seth made him believe in what he was doing through his actions and words. He mentions their WrestleMania match, saying Seth kicked his ass until he made him believe in him again.

Seth said he isn’t asking for anything — he’s carried Raw for the last year, being here having classics with Finn Balor and even Mojo Rawley (ouch) while Brock Lesnar was away. He asked Hunter if he wants the old Seth Rollins back. Hunter says yes, and he can prove it tonight by taking on Bobby Lashley. Seth says he’ll burn Lashley down then take everything away from Dean Ambrose. He’ll go after anyone that comes his way, including Triple H’s family.

This brought out Shane McMahon. He told Seth to get ready for his match, but someone will be facing Dean Ambrose for the Intercontinental title tonight in the Fresh Start battle royal. Finn Balor came out for the Battle Royal as Raw went to a commercial.

No Way Jose, then Baron Corbin (who is still wearing his GM outfit) entered to start the battle royal.

Apollo Crews won the Fresh Start battle royal

No Way Jose was the first man eliminated, followed by Viktor after both being press slammed to the floor by Crews. Zack Ryder was in here, so that stat about him not being on Raw in a match for the entirety of 2018 is officially broken. The Lucha House party worked together to eliminate Titus O’Neil.

Back from commercial, Balor eliminates the Lucha House Party as Crews eliminates the B-Team. Crews racks up eliminations, sending Mojo Rawley, Tyler Breeze and Konnor as well. Corbin eliminates Balor as he was working on Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder. Corbin eliminates Ryder, then Hawkins.

Crews and Corbin go at it. Crews hits an enziguri, then another as he eliminates Corbin for the win. Nice last few minutes in what was otherwise a plodding battle royal.

Charly Caruso was with Apollo Crews following the match. He says this is what he’s been begging for. He can’t think of any better way of spending the last day of 2018 by becoming Intercontinental champion.

Dasha brings in Natalya backstage, then recaps what happened last week in the Rousey/Natalya match. Dasha asked Natalya what the future holds for Natalya in 2019. She said 2018 had ups and downs for her, but the match last week pushed both of them to their limits. She said she is entering the women’s Royal Rumble match so she and Ronda can face one another again, this time at WrestleMania.

Nia Jax walks in, questioning if Ronda Rousey will even be champion by then —  maybe something will derail their plan. Tamina then jumps in from behind as she and Jax lay Natalya out.

Back from commercial, Corbin was upset in the ring, saying no one deserves a fresh start more than he does. He said the crowd had no idea how thought it was to be GM and he deserves an award.

This brought out Elias, who played Auld Lang Syne. He called Corbin a loser, and that led to chants of “You’re a loser” to Corbin. He said that Corbin said that Detroit was run down, but he and his friend Kid Rock agree that Detroit is making a comeback. Is Detroit like Raw? Or WCW after a reboot?

Elias started to play his song asking Corbin to go away. Corbin heard enough about a minute in and the two ended up brawling around the ring and into the crowd. Corbin eventually fled backstage as Elias stood tall.

Sasha Banks, Bayley and Ember Moon defeated The Riott Squad

Started off with some good action as everyone faced each other with some back and forth in the ring, spilling to the outside.

The Riott Squad were in control after the break, with the heels working over Sasha Banks for a long period of time. Morgan and Banks traded nearfalls. Moon broke up a pin and launched off with a crossbody to the floor, taking out Morgan and Riott. Bayley then laid out Sarah Logan with an elbow for the win. This was fine, good action throughout.

They aired a video showing Braun Strowman’s 2018 highlights. A lot of them included destroying Kevin Owens.

Lio Rush came out and said that if anyone deserves a fresh start in 2019, it’s Bobby Lashley. Rush told him to dominate as they headed to the ring.

Bobby Lashley defeated Seth Rollins by DQ

Rollins rushed Lashley at the start, but Lashley grabbed Rollins and threw him around shortly after. Rush interfered, sending Rollins into the post via hurricanrana.

Lashley had Rollins in a rest hold after the commercial break. Rollins made his comeback, but Lashley took opportunity with a Rush distraction with a slam. Rollins counters, but Rush is back on the apron. He and Rollins essentially play a game of cat and mouse, a game that Rush loses after being thrown into the barricade.
Lashley jumps Rollins, but he fights back with a steel chair for the DQ.

Something comes over Seth as he begins tearing into Lashley with steel chair shots. Rush launches off with a springboard, but Rollins lays him out and pelts the both of them with steel chair shots. The announcers said that this was what Triple H wanted. Rollins then stomped Rush for good measure.

Ronda Rousey looked mad backstage as Natalya paced around her.

They announced that John Cena will be on Raw next week.

For the third week in a row, they aired the same video about these fresh new faces from NXT coming to WWE.

Jinder Mahal and The Singh Brothers defeated Heath Slater and Rhyno

If you are wondering how Rhyno got his job back, well, I guess dressing up as Santa and hitting your finish on someone qualifies you to get a new contract.

Heels worked on Slater for a while. For the record, the Singh Brothers are about a million times more entertaining than Jinder Mahal  in the ring. Rhyno made a hot tag. He took care of all three then looked for the gore on Mahal. The referee was distracted by one of the Singh brothers. Mahal then just kicked Rhyno and pinned him with a Khallas. Cool.

Dean Ambrose ran down Seth Rollins for a bit. He will make it his duty to make Apollo Crews’ fresh start rotten.

Gable and Roode says they can’t think of anything better than to take on the Revival next week, and that they will continue to make the tag division glorious. Revival, Sasha Banks and Bayley all had tag-related resolutions for 2019 too.

Dean Ambrose defeated Apollo Crews to retain the Intercontinental title

Crews started off hot with some near falls, then landed a moonsault to the floor, which sends Ambrose reeling to the outside.

Back from break, Ambrose is in control, grinding down Crews, who eventually manages a comeback, hitting a crossbody and standing shooting star press for a couple of nearfalls.

Ambrose rakes the eyes and goes for dirty deeds, but Crews hits a blue thunder bomb, with Ambrose clutching the ropes to break it up. Crews hits a tope con hilo and makes his way to the top rope, going for a frog splash but it doesn’t connect. Ambrose then lays him out with the dirty deeds and gets the win. Thought this was good, but weird booking for Crews to lose clean like this when just a few hours ago he looked really strong in that battle royal.

Backstage, Alexa Bliss said she’d miss running the Raw women’s division. She said she made history, because if you say that enough times eventually it becomes true, I guess. She announced that A Moment of Bliss, her new talk show, would debut next week and Ronda Rousey will be the first guest. She then knocked Roddy Piper, saying Ronda better dress up as she’ll be in the ring with a goddess, not slumming it in some pit.

Highlights of Brock Lesnar aired. He’ll be on Raw next week.

Ronda Rousey and Natalya defeated Nia Jax and Tamina

Ronda, who was still ticked about the Natalya assault earlier, beat up Nia and Tamina right as she got in the ring. She beat up Tamina once the bell rang, but Nia splashed her in the corner. Nattie is tagged in as she and Tamina wrestle for a bit. Ronda is tagged backed in as she laid both women on the outside out with a crossbody.

Nia and Tamina both work on Nattie until Ronda makes the hot tag. Nia managed to cut her off as she went to the top rope for a big samoan drop. Ronda tried for a powerbomb but escaped instead, walking right into a Tamina superkick. Ronda goes for the armbar on Tamina, but Nia cut her off with a leg drop.

Tamina sets up Ronda for the superfly splash but Ronda gets her feet up and applies an armbar. Tamina quickly submits, giving Ronda and Nattie the win. And that is Raw, three hours of a television show that I can confirm existed here on December 31, 2018.

Have a happy new year. everyone!
