Mustafa Ali addresses scary TNA Slammiversary dive: ‘No one to blame but me’

Mustafa Ali is taking the blame for his rough landing at TNA Slammiversary last night.

During his match against Cedric Alexander at Sunday’s pay-per-view, there was a scary moment where Ali flew through the middle ropes for a dive to the outside. He hit the top of Alexander and almost flew over him entirely before taking a scary head-first landing onto the floor. A group of Ali’s Secret Service members were there but did not catch him. That has drawn criticism from fans, but Ali says no one is at fault but himself.

“Appreciate everyone’s concern. Unfortunately, I have to pull the curtain back here because the talent ringside was absolutely not responsible for that scary fall in any way and they are getting all the blame.” Ali tweeted this morning. “They did exactly what they were instructed to do. I tried to do a variation of a dive and simply slipped off my opponent. No one to blame but me.”

Ali was able to finish the match and get the victory over Alexander. And despite how scary the spot looked, Ali says he’s “all good.”

“I am all good,” he wrote. See ya on #TNAiMPACT”

After being released by WWE in 2023, Ali debuted for TNA in 2024 and is signed to a contract with the promotion. He plays a heel politician character, leading a faction called Order 4 with Jason Hotch, John Skyler & Tasha Steelz.

TNA’s next event following Slammiversary is a live episode of Impact in Kingston, Rhode Island this Thursday. The promotion will also hold TV tapings there on Friday.

TNA announces North American attendance record for Slammiversary

A record-breaking night in Long island.

TNA issued a press release during Slammiversary announcing a new North American attendance record of 7,623 for Sunday’s show at the UBS Arena. The previous record was TNA Lockdown 2013, where they drew 7,200 at the Alamodome in Texas.

“This company has worked tirelessly since last December when it was announced that Slammiversary would be held at the UBS Arena,” TNA Wrestling President Carlos Silva said in a press release. “To see a record-setting crowd at the UBS Arena was a milestone moment for TNA Wrestling that no one will ever forget.”

The night saw new champions crowned as Jacy Jayne won the TNA Knockouts title from Masha Slamovich, becoming a double champion. Leon Slater defeated Moose to win the X Division title, and The Hardys won a four-way to become TNA Tag Team Champions once more. But in the main event, Trick Williams retained the TNA World title over Joe Hendry and Mike Santana, keeping TNA’s top title out of the company’s hands.

Jacy Jayne is a double champion.

Jayne won the TNA Knockouts title at Sunday’s Slammiversary, pinning Masha Slamovich in a match where both the Knockouts and NXT Women’s Championship were on the line. As a result, Jayne has become the first person ever to simultaneously hold titles in both companies.

The finish of the match had Jazmyn Nyx and Fallon Henley at ringside interfere, only for Xia Brookside and Lei Ying Lee to come out and brawl with them into the crowd. Slamovich hit the Snow Plow and got a visual pinfall, but the referee was down after Jayne connected with an inadvertent superkick. The two traded nearfalls until Slamovich was sent into the ring post, then was pinned followig rolling encore by Jayne.

Slamovich had been champion since October of last year, defeating Jordynne Grace at Bound for Glory. She had been making appearances on NXT television in the weeks leading to the double title match, teaming with Sol Ruca and Zaria to defeat Fatal Attraction on this week’s NXT.

Jayne has held the NXT Women’s Championship since May 27, when she defeated Stephanie Vaquer in a surprise on an episode of NXT.

A new eight-man tag featuring members of WWE NXT’s DarkState vs. TNA’s The System is set for Sunday’s Slammiversary pay-per-view.

As announced during Thursday’s Impact go-home show, Matt Cardona will team with The System’s Eddie Edwards, Brian Myers, and JDC against DarkState’s Dion Lennox, Cutler James, Saquon Shugars, and Osiris Griffin.

The new match stems from an angle on Impact where DarkState attacked Cardona, but The System came to Cardona’s rescue:

Seven matches are set for the pay-per-view portion of the card on Sunday, with a Knockouts Tag Team title match and a Busted Open panel set for the Countdown to Slammiversary pre-show on TNA’s digital media channels.

Update on AJ Styles-TNA Slammiversary rumors

AJ Styles — the greatest homegrown star in TNA Wrestling history — could be returning to the promotion for an appearance this weekend.

Speculation that Styles will be appearing at TNA Slammiversary began this week when, while posting a tweet promoting the show, TNA President Carlos Silva was sure to capitalize the word “PHENOMENAL” — a possible reference to Styles. There has been no official announcement that Styles will appear, but Sports Illustrated’s The Takedown reports that several members of the TNA roster expect him to be at Sunday’s pay-per-view in some capacity.

“The Takedown has learned that a potential Styles appearance at Slammiversary has been in the works for some time now and was a top priority for the upper brass within TNA,” the report said. “The expectation among several members of the roster is that he will indeed be at UBS Arena for Slammiversary in some capacity.”

Styles is one of the most decorated wrestlers in TNA history but has not competed for the promotion since 2013. The 48 year old recently signed a one-year contract extension with WWE. An appearance at Slammiversary would be possible because of the growing working relationship that WWE has with TNA Wrestling.

The build to Slammiversary has been heavily featured on WWE NXT — and NXT stars Trick Williams and Jacy Jayne are competing in two of the top matches at the pay-per-view. Williams, the current TNA World Champion, is defending his title against Joe Hendry and Mike Santana in a triple threat match. Jayne and Masha Slamovich are facing off in a winner-take-all bout where the NXT Women’s Championship and TNA Knockouts Championship are both up for grabs.

After a segment on last week’s Impact where he demanded to be added to the Trick Williams vs. Joe Hendry World title bout set for the July 20 Slammiversary pay-per-view, TNA announced Monday night that director of authority Santino Marella had granted his request. The TNA World title match at Slammiversary will now have Williams defending against Hendry and Santana in a three-way.

Santana responded to the announcement with a social media post on X:

“I’ve worked my entire adult life for opportunities like this… FIRST EVER PUERTO RICAN TNA WORLD CHAMPION sounds pretty badass to me!!!”

Joe Hendry to challenge for TNA World title at Slammiversary

Joe Hendry is getting another shot at the TNA Championship.

TNA announced on social media Friday that Hendry will challenge for the TNA Championship at Slammiversary, which takes place on July 20 at the UBS Arena.

However, during Friday’s TNA Impact taping that aired live for TNA+ subscribers, Mike Santana declared he wanted a shot at the title, wanting to challenge both men and walk out of his hometown the TNA World Champion. The triple threat has yet to be made official.

Hendry lost the title to Trick Williams in the main event of NXT Battleground back in May, putting the title in the hands of a WWE-contracted wrestler for the first time. Shortly after, Santana faced Williams in a TNA title match on an episode of NXT. He was unsuccessful thanks to interference from First Class, AJ Francis and KC Navarro. Santana defeated Francis at Friday’s tapings as a measure of revenge.

Since losing the title Hendry has been on a losing streak, failing to defeat Frankie Kazarian and coming up short in a four-way for the X Division title at AAA’s Triplemania Regia.

X-Division title match official for TNA Slammiversary

The first match is official for TNA Slammiversary and it will be for the X-Division Championship.

TNA announced during Thursday’s Impact that X-Division Champion Moose will defend his title against Leon Slater on the Sunday, July 20 Slammiversary pay-per-view.

Slater picked up a victory over Jason Hotch on Thursday’s Impact as his title challenge was revealed in a picture-in-picture segment during the contest.

Although not yet official, another title match appears to be set for Slammiversary following Thursday’s Impact.

The returning Killer Kelly won the 8-4-1 match on Thursday’s episode to earn a future Knockouts World title shot against Masha Slamovich, her former MK Ultra tag partner.

A Champions Challenge match set for next week’s Impact could provide further clarity to the Slammiversary lineup, with World Champion Trick Williams, X-Division Champion Moose, Tag Team Champions Nic Nemeth and Ryan Nemeth, and International Champion Steve Maclin facing a team of potential challengers in Joe Hendry, Elijah, Zachary Wentz and Trey Miguel of The Rascalz, and Mike Santana.

Slammiversary is set for the UBS Arena on Long Island, New York on Sunday, July 20.
