AEW Late Night Dynamite live results: Brandi Rhodes vs. Anna Jay

Late Night Dynamite airs tonight on TNT.

Three matches have been advertised for the AEW special.

Brandi Rhodes will be in action against The Dark Order’s Anna Jay. The Dark Order took Rhodes’s husband out of action on the August 22 edition of Dynamite. Mr. Brodie Lee defeated Cody for the TNT Championship that night. Cody was assaulted by Dark Order after and did a stretcher job.

Shawn Spears will face Matt Sydal. Both were participants in the Casino Battle Royale at All Out on September 5. Sydal eliminated Spears from the match before being tossed himself by Eddie Kingston.

Scorpio Sky, the fifth-ranked singles competitor in AEW, is also scheduled for tonight’s show. Sky will face Ben Carter. Carter made his AEW debut on the September 8 episode of AEW Dark in a losing effort against Ricky Starks. According to AEW’s website, Carter is a former Black and Brave Wrestling Academy student.

Our live coverage begins following the conclusion of tonight’s NBA playoff coverage on TNT.

**********

Jim Ross, Excalibur and Tony Schiavone were the broadcast team.

Chris Jericho entered and joined the commentary desk. Jericho milked the Judas reaction.

**********

Scorpio Sky defeated Ben Carter

This was a quality opener.

Carter is fundamentally sound and looks to be a pretty good athlete. They worked a slow pace and kept things simple.

They traded basic holds, including hammerlocks. Both appeared to be going after the other’s left arm. Sky used a leg sweep. Carter hit a deep arm drag. Sky rolled outside to collect himself. They traded dropkicks and chops before a commercial break.

Sky was working a chinlock after the break. Carter rolled to the apron and blocked a suplex back in. Carter hit a moonsault press into a reverse DDT for a two count. He followed with a standing shooting star for another two count.

Carter missed a moonsault off the post but connected with a tope con giro. Carter hit a frog splash for another two count.

Sky avoided a phoenix splash and hit a neckbreaker for a two count. Sky tried a fisherman buster but Carter blocked. Sky got the fisherman buster on a second attempt for a near fall.

Carter used a schoolboy for a near fall. Sky hit a double stomp, a big boot and a TKO for the pin.

Sky and Carter shook hands after the bout.

**********

They aired a hype video for Moxley, Hobbs & Allin vs. Archer, Cage & Starks on Wednesday’s Dynamite.

**********

Anna Jay defeated Brandi Rhodes

This was much better than it had any right to be given their combined in-ring experience level. The announcers put this over as a grudge match and they definitely worked it that way.

Brandi came out firing forearms and elbow strikes. Brandi hit a DDT on the apron.

Brandi hit a Thesz press and worked on Jay’s abdomen with strikes. Jay did a nice job selling.

Jay used her Queen Slayer rear naked choke but Brandi flipped it over into a cradle for a two count.

Jay cut Brandi off and hit some strikes before using a chinlock. Brandi came back with a slingblade.

Stu Grayson and Evil Uno ran in and took the ref. Brandi hit A Shot of Brandi but there was no ref to count the pin.

Jay used the Queen Slayer and Brandi passed out in the hold for the finish.

**********

Alex Marvez interviewed Scorpio Sky. Sky said he’s going after the TNT title.

Matt Sydal entered. Sydal and Sky buddied up to each other and put each other over. Sky invited Sydal out for drinks later and said Marvez could come with.

Sky was the best promo of this bunch and that’s not saying a lot.

**********

A video package for the TNT title match between Orange Cassidy and Brodie Lee aired. JR put Cassidy over strongly.

**********

Shawn Spears (w/Tully Blanchard) defeated Matt Sydal

They opened with some chain wrestling. Spears hit some chops. Spears teased a plancha but Sydal took him out with a leg sweep on the apron.

Sydal hit a leg lariat for a two count. Sydal worked an armbar before a break.

Sydal hit a top rope rana after the commercial break. Sydal hit some kicks and used a wacky cradle for a two count. Sydal hit a slice for a two count. Sydal hit a tornillo for another near fall.

Sydal teased the shooting star press but Spears cut him off. Spears hit a spinebuster for a two count.

They traded strikes. Sydal hit a jumping knee strike. Spears hit an ushigoroshi into a double down.

Spears went for a DVD but Sydal blocked. Sydal hit a hot shot and a meteora for a near fall.

Spears sat on a chair on the floor. Sydal hit a running knee and celebrated in the ring while Blanchard loaded Spears’ glove.

They did a couple of teases with the loaded glove before Spears finally connected with a punch and a C4 for the pin.

**********

Spears went after Sydal after the match but Sky ran in for the save.

Shawn Spears vs. Dustin Rhodes added to AEW Double or Nothing

Saturday’s AEW Double or Nothing card appears to be complete with the addition of Shawn Spears vs. Dustin Rhodes, made official on Wednesday’s edition of Dynamite.

Playing a broadcaster on “SSN” (Shawn Spears News), Spears mocked Rhodes and said he was retired before making a comment about how Rhodes had no problem popping pills 12 years ago. He then said he was upset about not being booked for Saturday’s show and challenged Rhodes. The match was then announced by the broadcast team a few minutes later without Rhodes appearing to officially accept.

Spears and Rhodes have wrestled once in a tag team match on AEW Dark, but never in a singles match. Spears has won his last three singles matches while Rhodes was last seen in a losing effort to Lance Archer in the TNT championship tournament semifinals.

As of now, Saturday’s pay-per-view is as follows:

  • AEW Champion Jon Moxley vs. Brodie Lee
  • AEW TNT Championship: Cody vs. Lance Archer
  • Stadium Stampede: The Inner Circle vs. The Elite & Matt Hardy
  • AEW Women’s Champion Nyla Rose vs. Hikaru Shida
  • Casino Ladder Match
  • MJF vs. Jungle Boy
  • Britt Baker vs. Kris Statlander
  • Private Party vs. Best Friends

AEW Dark results: Billy Gunn vs. Shawn Spears

Video —

Report —

AEW Dark was a one-match show this week.  The bout saw Shawn Spears take on Billy Gunn, a main event anywhere in the world.

**********

Shawn Spears defeated Billy Gunn (w/ Austin Gunn)

Spears began with a lot of stalling before finally locking up. Billy used an arm wringer and targeted the left arm of Spears. Spears rolled outside and stalled more.

Billy missed a charge into the corner. Spears then missed a charge into the corner. Billy hit some kicks in the corner. Spears again rolled outside. Austin began jawing with Spears.

The match spilled outside, where Billy beat Spears around ringside. They did a comedy spot which saw Spears land with his face in the lap of ring announcer Dasha Gonzalez. Spears posted Billy and began working the big man over.

Spears used a DDT for a near fall. Spears threw a series of strikes. Billy countered with a lariat and began a slow-motion comeback.

Billy fired up and hit some strikes. He went for the Fameasser. Spears blocked and rolled Billy up for a two count. Billy hit a deep six into a double down.

The finish saw Billy miss a charge into the corner. Spears hit his C4 and pinned Gunn.

Final thoughts —

Unless you are a massive Billy Gunn fan or a Gunn family member, you can skip this.

AEW Dynamite live results: TNT Championship tournament begins

AEW Dynamite airs tonight from The Nightmare Factory in Norcross, Georgia.

The TNT Championship Tournament will begin with a first round match between Cody and Shawn Spears. Cody and Spears last squared off at AEW All Out last August in a match where Cody was victorious.

Britt Baker will take on Hikaru Shida in a women’s division match. Baker taunted Shida from the sidelines during Shida’s match last week, setting up this contest. Baker also threatened to attack Shida with her shoe.

Kenny Omega and Michael Nakazawa will team against the Best Friends duo of Trent and Chuck Taylor. Omega holds the AEW World Tag Team titles with Hangman Page, but Page has not appeared on Dynamite in recent weeks.

Lance Archer and Brodie Lee are also scheduled for singles bouts tonight against unnamed competitors, likely in squash matches.

The commentary team for tonight’s show will be Tony Schiavone and Chris Jericho.

Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

**********

The show opened with a strong Jake Roberts promo. He asked Cody if he was a man or a mouse and asked him to squeak up and tell him.

Roberts said he expected Cody to slip on a banana peel and lose tonight so he wouldn’t have to face Lance Archer later in the tournament.

Lance Archer defeated Allen Angels

Angels didn’t get a graphic. Archer won a squash with the Blackout.

**********

Chris Jericho and Tony Schiavone previewed the rest of the card. Jericho put over Britt Baker’s ring gear, he said he loves sparkly outfits.

**********

Hikaru Shida defeated Britt Baker

These two beat the hell out of each other. The match went a little long but was very intense and very good. Maybe the best match of Baker’s career.

Tony commented that Baker had an attitude change in recent months. Jericho said he was in the same place as Baker in 1997. Then he started shaking babies and kissing hands rather than the other way around and became the Jericho we know today.

Baker used underhanded tactics to take control on Shida. Baker hit a very real punch to the face on the mat. Baker started playing to the camera, allowing Shida to come back with an attack on the floor. Shida hit a knee lift before a commercial break.

Shida was still in control after the break. Baker used a quick cradle for a two count. Shida used a triangle choke but Baker forced a break.

Baker hit a slingblade and a double arm suplex for a near fall. Baker went for Lockjaw but Shida forced a rope break.

They traded stiff strikes. Baker ended up with a bloody nose. Shida hit a Michinoku driver for a near fall. They traded cradles for near falls.

Baker hit a swinging neckbreaker and a superkick for near falls.

The finish saw Shida hit a gutbuster on the top rope, then follow up with a shining wizard for the pin.

**********

Kenny Omega and Michael Nakazawa met backstage. Omega said they’re teaming tonight and they used to be a great team in DDT but they need a team name. Nakazawa suggested “Best Friends.”

Orange Cassidy and Best Friends entered and they had a comedy pull-apart. Omega said if he and Nakazawa win tonight they get the Best Friends name.

**********

A video package detailed the latest AEW rankings. I hope they do this every week.

**********

A strong video package aired hyping the Jake Hager vs. Jon Moxley title match next week.

Moxley said he’s not in the business of putting smiles on faces. He said he’s going to beat Hager and it’s going to be ugly and violent.

Hager did a much better promo than last week in this package. His wife Catalina Hager said that either Hager comes him a victor or he doesn’t come home. Hager’s MMA coach put over his dedication.

Moxley said Hager popped right up from the move that’s put down everyone in this business in the Paradigm Shift. He said they don’t get paid by the hour and next week’s match could go three or thirty minutes.

**********

Best Friends defeated Kenny Omega & Michael Nakazawa

Taylor and Trent won after hitting Strong Zero on Nakazawa.

This went approximately as long as Edge and Orton at WrestleMania.

Nakazawa did his baby oil and underpants spots. That’s fine. It just went way too long.

Omega and Nakazawa cut off Taylor, then Trent, then Taylor, then Trent. Orange Cassidy jumped in and did some comedy spots with Nakazawa.

Schiavone and Jericho weren’t burying this on commentary but they weren’t sure how to sell it either.

**********

A Brodie Lee video aired. He ripped on two minions for not dressing as sharply as another minion and wearing a tie. Lee said perception is reality and the perception when walking through an airport is important.

**********

Britt Baker cut a promo. She said Shida is the dirtiest wrestler she’s ever been in the ring with and she’s lucky Shida didn’t touch here teeth. Baker said actually, if Shida had broken her teeth, Britt could fix them herself because she’s a dentist.

**********

We got another Moxley/Hager video package. Moxley cut a great promo about how there are no judges or scorecards when Hager steps in the ring with him.

Moxley said in no uncertain terms, he’s going to “f*** Hager up.”

Hager’s talking was not very good in this video. He said AEW will be better off with Hager as champion.

**********

A Matt Hardy promo aired.

He ripped on Jericho for targeting his allies The Elite. He said he won’t allow the circle that’s internal to take over AEW.

He said Sammy Guevara is a false god and a false Latino. He said he can’t wait to eat Proud and Powerful because he loves Puerto Rican food. He said all Hager needs to complete his transformation to a Jakenstein is two bolts in the side of his head.

Hardy called on Vanguard 1 to bring him the Inner Circle shirt from Jericho. Vanguard said Jericho’s shirt was a dumpster fire.

Hardy challenged Jericho to come to the Hardy compound and face him in The Elite Deletion.

I think the Broken gimmick is stale and doesn’t fit in AEW but if you disagree, you would probably enjoy this promo.

**********

Brodie Lee defeated Lee Johnson

This is the second Lee Johnson match I’ve seen this week. I’ve learned that he throws a great dropkick and takes a hell of a flip bump.

Lee won a quick squash. He suplexed Johnson right on his head, hit a black hole slam, then used the discus lariat for the pin.

*********

Cody (w/Brandi Rhodes) defeated Shawn Spears

Cody came out of the gate strong and used a cutter for a near fall. Cody used a variety of holds and got some quick covers for two counts.

Cody really made a point of covering chest to chest and not hooking legs as he brought up on commentary last week. I’m not sure which technique would be more effective in a shoot. But after years of hooking a leg being emphasized in pro wrestling, it looks weird to see a different cover.

Cody missed a moonsault which allowed Spears to take over before the first commercial break.

Spears hit a suplex on a guardrail on the outside, then continued to beat Cody down in the ring. Spears missed a springboard frog splash and Cody got his knees up.

Cody made a comeback with his weight belt. Cody missed a Disaster Kick. Spears hit a spinebuster for a two count before the second commercial break of the match.

Spears pulled a table from under the ring. Cody nailed him with a suicide dive. Spears hit a double underhook superplex but could not follow up with a cover.

They did a spot where they teased Brandi going through the table off the apron. Instead, Spears tossed Cody over the top through a table. Cody made it back in after a countout tease.

Cody blocked a C4 and hit two Cross Rhodes. Spears kicked out.

The finish was unique. Cody locked on a figure four. Spears put his shoulders on the mat in the hold and Aubrey Edwards counted the pin.

**********

This show had some life thanks to the presence of extras and enhancement talent serving as the crowd for the night. Way more than ten people in the room if that’s still a thing we’re talking about.

Shida and Baker had a killer match and Spears and Cody were solid in the main event.

The promos and hype videos were mostly good. I’m down on the Matt Hardy stuff and thought the comedy tag match went way too long, but otherwise enjoyed the show.

Cody vs. Shawn Spears set for next week’s AEW Dynamite

The first match in the TNT title tournament will take place next week on Dynamite.

Cody will battle longtime rival Shawn Spears next week in the first round of the tournament that will decide the first-ever TNT champion. Cody and Spears, former tag team partners in OVW, collided at last year’s All Out event, with Cody picking up the win.

Tonight’s AEW Dynamite was headlined by a tag team match where Cody and Darby Allin lost to Shawn Spears and Sammy Guevara. Spears rolled up Allin for the win after distracting him with a steel chair.

Other matches that will be held in the first round include Darby Allin vs. Sammy Guevara, Kip Sabian vs. Dustin Rhodes, and Lance Archer vs. Colt Cabana.

The finals of the tournament will take place at Double or Nothing, which is currently scheduled to take place on May 23 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

AEW Dynamite live results: Cody & Allin vs. Spears & Guevara

After weeks of airing from Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida, AEW Dynamite airs tonight from an undisclosed location.

New restrictions on hotels in Jacksonville and the presence of a new coronavirus testing center in a parking lot close to Daily’s Place forced the shift.

It is unclear how much of tonight’s show will be live versus taped, as our Dave Meltzer reported yesterday that a significant amount of footage was recorded yesterday for use in upcoming shows.

Announced for tonight’s show is a tag team match featuring Cody and Darby Allin teaming against Shawn Spears and Sammy Guevara. All four have also been announced as competitors in the upcoming TNT Championship tournament.

Guevara will face Allin and Cody will face Spears in the quarterfinals of the tournament. The four other tournament participants will be announced this evening as well.

Also announced for tonight’s show is Kenny Omega vs. Trent. These two last met in singles competition in NJPW in November 2017, when Omega successfully defended the IWGP United States Heavyweight title.

Lance Archer is also scheduled to make his AEW in-ring debut tonight against an unnamed competitor.

Our coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

**********

Kip Sabian vs. Dustin Rhodes and Lance Archer vs. Colt Cabana were announced as the other two matches in the first round of the TNT tournament.

Billy and Austin Gunn stood in the babyface section of the crowd. Kip Sabian, Penelope Ford, Jimmy Havoc and Britt Baker stood several feet apart on the heel side.

Cody, his dog Pharaoh and Tony Schiavone previewed the card for this evening.

**********

Kenny Omega defeated Trent (w/Chuck Taylor & Orange Cassidy)

They had a very good TV bout. The story of the match was that Trent was getting the best of the wrestling exchanges. Omega became frustrated and resorted to brawling. Trent became frustrated at that and started using brawling tactics himself.

They began with a handshake.

Omega hit his kotaro krusher. Trent connected on some chops. They brawled around the arena and fought into the crowd. Omega hit a pop-up powerbomb into a post in the crowd.

They traded strikes in the ring. Omega hit a V-Trigger. Trent hit a piledriver. Omega blocked a swing DDT and connected with a snap dragon suplex.

Omega took a flip bump off  lariat. Omega hit a powerbomb and a V-Trigger. They traded shots on the apron as they really began teasing a time limit draw.

Trent hit a nasty suplex off the top rope. He never had his feet set and the ropes looked loose and he almost killed Omega with a head drop superplex. Trent covered for a two count.

Omega hit a V-Trigger and used the One-Winged Angel for the pin with a minute left.

**********

A video recapped the Matt Hardy/Chris Jericho angle from last week. That feels like it was a year ago at least.

**********

A Hikaru Shida hype video played.

**********

Hikaru Shida defeated Anna Jayy

Jayy looked good here in her debut and they had a competitive match.

Jayy hit a knee strike. Shida hit a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker and a knee lift before jawing with Britt Baker on the outside.

Shida hit a forearm strike. Jayy came back with kicks and used three quick cradles for near falls. Shida tried a triangle choke but Jayy reached the ropes.

Shida hit a vertical suplex, a knee strike, then used the falcon arrow to pick up the pin.

**********

Shida and Baker exchanged more words after the match.

**********

A Jake Hager vs. Jon Moxley hype video played. Moxley and Chris Jericho were excellent in this video package.

Hager vs. Moxley in a no holds barred empty arena match for the AEW title was announced for the April 15 Dynamite.

**********

Colt Cabana joined Schiavone on commentary as Cody left to prepare for his match.

A Lance Archer hype video played. Jake Roberts cut a promo and said Cody might be smarter than he gave him credit for.

He said Cody might be smart enough to be afraid of Archer. Either that or his better half is ordering Cody to stay away. Roberts said Cody’s better half wears the pants anyway.

**********

Lance Archer defeated Marko Stunt

Archer dominated with a variety of power moves. Stunt hit a tope suicida and teased another dive, but Archer cut him off with a lariat and hit a pounce.

Archer hit a chokeslam. He had Stunt pinned but pulled him up at the count of two to dish out more punishment.

Archer then hit Blackout and pinned Stunt.

**********

Archer threw Stunt out of the ring and over the barricade onto the babyface side of the crowd after the match.

**********

A Brodie Lee video played. This week he freaked out over a minion not referring to him as Mr. Brodie, then went off on another for yawning.

**********

Dustin Rhodes & QT Marshall (w/Brandi Rhodes) defeated 8 & 9

8 and 9 were masked Dark Order geeks. Marshall had the mask that Dark Order offered him last week. He tossed it aside and went on the attack.

8 and 9 got some offense on Marshall. Marshall came back with some impressive power spots and gave Dustin the hot tag. Dustin ran wild with trademark spots including his bulldog, powerslam and a flip dive off the apron.

Dustin and Marshall hit their tandem flapjack for the pin.

**********

Brodie came to the ring after the match to deliver a powerbomb to 8 or 9 for failing.

**********

A Jericho video promo played. This was essentially a rehash of last week’s angle, minus a Hardy appearance.

Jericho was in a hot tub at his estate. He ran down The Elite and used a variety of catchphrases. This was wildly entertaining.

Vanguard One approached Jericho. Jericho tried to apologize but couldn’t say te word “sorry.”

Jericho again offered Vanguard One a spot in The Inner Circle and placed a tiny Inner Circle shirt on a iny hanger on Vanguard. Vanguard flew away with the shirt.

Jericho ordered the hounds to be released at his his estate. The dogs chased the drone as it flew away.

Some will like this, some will hate this.

**********

Cody vs. Shawn Spears in a TNT tournament match was announced for next week.

**********

A Young Bucks video package showed Nick and Matt working in the ring as Nick prepared to come back from his attack at the hands of The Inner Circle.

They cut a positive promo encouraging everyone to live life to the fullest. Nick said he can’t wait to get back to wrestling but he’s not ready yet.

**********

Sammy Guevara & Shawn Spears defeated Darby Allin & Cody

This was a hell of a match.

Cody and Allin got some shine at the outset. They hit stereo suicide dives before the first commercial break of the match.

After the ad break, Guevara and Spears worked over Allin. They took money out of their trunks and were gambling on who could hold Allin up for a monger suplex.

Allin came back with an air raid crash on Guevara. Cody got a hot tag and ran wild with a disaster kick, a springboard cutter and a powerslam.

Guevara took the referee allowing Spears to pull Cody outside. Cody got sent over the barricade where the heels worked him over before the second ad break.

After the commercials, Spears and Guevara traded quick tags in working Cody over. Cody came back with a moonsault press on Spears and made a hot tag to Allin.

Allin hit a missile dropkick and a suicide dive to Guevara. Allin tried a second dive to Spears but got caught and sent into the barricade.

Things broke down as Guevara hit a dropkick sending Allin over the barricade. Cody hit a dive. Spears hit a C4 on Cody.

In a crazy spot, Allin shimmied up a support beam and hit a Coffin Drop to Guevara and Spears on the floor. Allin tried a scond Coffin Drop but got cut off. Guevara tossed Allin off the top rope into the barricade.

Cody hit a superplex to Guevara. Spears hit a frog splash to Cody.

Spears teased a chair shot to Cody. Allin pulled the chair away. Guevara grabbed the chair allowing Spears to roll up and pin Allin.

**********

After the match, Allin laid out Cody with a right hand.

**********

I would call this a thumbs up show. It had a lot of good wrestling. The angles were a bit more spotty and their success or failure depends on what you want out of your wrestling.

Cody & Allin vs. Spears & Guevara set for AEW Dynamite

Ahead of the TNT Championship tournament, four of the wrestlers set for it will be in tag team action on this week’s episode of Dynamite.

AEW has announced that Cody & Darby Allin vs. Shawn Spears & Sammy Guevara will take place on Dynamite tomorrow. Those are the four wrestlers on the left side of the TNT Championship tournament bracket.

It will be Cody vs. Spears and Allin vs. Guevara in the first round of the TNT Championship tournament. The winners will advance to face each other in the semifinals.

The other half of the bracket for the TNT Championship tournament will be revealed on Dynamite tomorrow. It’s an eight-man, single-elimination tournament and will begin on Dynamite on Wednesday, April 8.

Dave Meltzer reported today that AEW’s TV is being moved out of Daily’s Place in Jacksonville and will now take place at an undisclosed location that’s believed to be in the Southeast. Meltzer wrote that it’s “believed they will be taping matches throughout Tuesday and Wednesday for this week’s Dynamite and Dark as well as future shows.”

Kenny Omega vs. Trent is also set for tomorrow’s Dynamite, along with Lance Archer making his AEW in-ring debut. Archer’s opponent hasn’t been revealed.

The first ever titleholder will be determined by an unforgettable tournament that fans will not want to miss, and that our wrestlers will be desperate to win. I’m excited for the announcement of the full bracket live on Dynamite this week. And, it’s only fitting that the champion and the title belt will carry the logo of the globally-respected TNT brand, and that they’ll represent not only AEW but also the great quality programming, massive reach, and storied history in the wrestling business that are all associated with TNT.”

The TNT Championship will be the fourth title that AEW has introduced. Jon Moxley holds the AEW Championship, Nyla Rose is the AEW Women’s Champion, and Kenny Omega & Hangman Page are the AEW Tag Team Champions.

This was a complete squash. Hager hit a wheelbarrow German, a uranage, then used a head-and-arm triangle for the submission win.

**********

The Natural Nightmares (Dustin Rhodes & QT Marshall w/ Brandi Rhodes) defeated Matt Sells & Jon Cruz (w/ Skyler Moore)

Sells and Cruz are an awesome jobber team. Sells looks like a cross between DDP and Shane Douglas.

Rhodes controlled the early part of the match with basic arm drag/shoulder tackle offense.

Marshall tagged in and got cut off after an illegal knee from the apron by Cruz and a forearm by Sells. Sells hit a neckbreaker for a two count. Marshall made a tag to Rhodes, who hit some signature offense.

The finish saw Marshall and Rhodes hit their unnamed tandem finisher, allowing Marshall to pin Cruz.

**********

SCU (Christopher Daniels & Frankie Kazarian) defeated Robert “Ego” Anthony & Shawn Spears (w/ Tully Blanchard)

This was the best and most competitive match on the show. The story of the match was that Anthony was actually pretty good and Spears was to blame for the loss.

Excalibur put over Anthony’s 20 years of experience.

Anthony and Kazarian began. Kazarian used a hip toss and an armbar to control Anthony. The gave Anthony some credibility as he nearly countered out of each of Kazarian’s holds.

Daniels and Spears tagged in and things went south for the Spears and Anthony duo. Daniels hit an interfering Anthony with an STO. Kazarian hit a double stomp to Spears.

Anthony interfered from the floor and pulled Kazarian outside. Spears hit a spinebuster on Daniels and took control of the bout.

Spears did a comedy spot where he jumped the railing and chanted for himself. Anthony and Spears worked over Daniels.

Daniels ducked a clothesline and made a hot tag to Kazarian, who used a lariat on Anthony for a near fall. Kazarian hit a springboard leg drop on Anthony for a two count.

Spears tried to interfere but twice accidentally hit Anthony. Anthony hit a rolling DVD on Kazarian for a two count.

The finish saw Anthony accidentally hit Spears with a clothesline. Spears then rolled out of the ring and left Anthony on his own. Daniels and Kazarian hit the Best Meltzer Ever for the pin.

**********

Blanchard gave a thumbs down after the match and Spears hit a C4 on Anthony.

**********

Kip Sabian (w/Penelope Ford) defeated Suge D

Suge D is better known as Sugar Dunkerton.

Sabian was canoodling in the corner with Ford after the opening bell rang, allowing Suge to use a quick roll-up for a two count. Sabian took the ref and Ford hit a drive-by dropkick on the apron.

Sabian hit a hangman neckbreaker for a two count. Suge used an intricate series of counters and reversals and hit a rolling elbow for a two count.

Sabian hit a half-and-half suplex, then used a Russian leg sweep to set up the Cruciatus Clutch. Suge tapped out.

**********

Colt Cabana defeated Brandon Cutler

These two had a solid babyface match with a simple story and a splash of comedy.

Cabana outwrestled Cutler in the opening minutes of the match. Cabana got cocky, then Cutler began to answer Cabana hold for hold.

Cutler hit a suicide dive. Cabana climbed back inside and Cutler tried a springboard attack. Cabana sidestepped and Cutler crashed to the mat.

Cabana then used a bionic elbow and a Superman Pin to put away Cutler.

**********

Sonny Kiss & Joey Janela defeated Corey Hollis & Mike Reed

Janela and Kiss opened the match working over Hollis. Kiss hit a double back handspring into a slap to the face.

Hollis caught a kick from Kiss, then Reed hit Kiss with a knee strike to the face and took control of the match.

Reed hit Kiss with some forearm shots. Kiss escaped a back suplex and Janela got the hot tag.

Janela hit a high cross off the top and a jawbreaker on Reed. Hollis jumped in and ate a DVD. Kiss hit an axe kick in the corner. Janela used Kiss as a launch pad and hit a top rope elbow.

The finish saw Kiss use a split-legged leg drop off the second rope, then cover Reed for the pin.

Six matches announced for this week’s AEW Dark

Shawn Spears (w/ Tully Blanchard) & Robert Anthony vs. SCU (Christoper Daniels and Frankie Kazarian)

Outside six-man tag matches with Scorpio Sky, this will be the first time Daniels and Kazarian have teamed together under the AEW banner.

Sonny Kiss and Joey Janela vs. Corey Hollis and Mike Reed

This is the first time Kiss and Janela have teamed up. This will be the promotional debuts for both the Alabama-born Hollis and the Florida-born Reed.

QT Marshall and Dustin Rhodes (w/Brandi Rhodes) vs. Matt Sells and Jon Cruz

The Nightmare Family members have teamed before in a winning effort over Peter Avalon and Shawn Spears on the February 19th AEW Dark. This will be the promotional debuts for the Georgia-born Sells and the Puerto Rico native who mainly works as Serpentico.

The Big News: Shawn Spears and Peter Avalon both walked out on their partners this week, leading to their teams losing.

**********

This past Tuesday, during my critically-acclaimed AEW Dark report, as Joey Janela hit Kip Sabian in the head with a prosthetic leg, I quipped “Do I really have nothing better to do on Tuesday nights?” Apparently AEW listened and here we are, for one week only, on Friday.

Excalibur and Taz started the show by introducing all the matches.

Luther defeated Sonny Kiss

51-year old Luther was making his AEW in-ring debut here. It still makes him younger than WWE Universal Champion Goldberg and ROH World Champion PCO. Not sure whatever happened to Mel and I wonder how she now feels about shaving her head for that Nightmare Collective angle.

Luther charged at the bell with a series of chops. Kiss tried to combat them with his speed, but Luther took his head off with a big boot. This was not the most exciting match in the world, but the fans were into it.

Kiss made his comeback with a series of boots and kicks and hit the Axes and O’s for a two count. Luther rolled out of the way of a moonsault, caught Kiss on a hurricanrana attempt, and laid him out with a powerbomb. Luther slapped on a Camel Clutch and began clawing at Kiss’ face before the submission.

Luther appeared to not want to break the hold, so Jimmy Havoc hit the ring, which caused Luther to run off.

Tony Schiavone and Dasha Gonzalez were high above the arena to talk about Revolution tomorrow night. Gonzalez wants title changes, especially the World title.

They also talked about how great it is to work with Excalibur and Taz.

The Dark Order (Evil Uno & Stu Grayson w/ Alex Reynolds and John Silver) defeated Michael Nakazawa & Peter Avalon (w/ Leva Bates)

This might be the weirdest team in wrestling history.

Dark Order will take on Scorpio Sky & Frankie Kazarian of SoCal Uncensored tomorrow night at Revolution. Bates took the mic and chastised Avalon for insulting every city they go to. Bates said she brought the perfect book for him: Don’t Be A Dick.

Avalon took the mic, again, when Nakazawa tried to pour oil all over himself. Avalon said he didn’t want any of that comedy crap. He ordered Nakazawa out of the ring, but Avalon then slipped on the oil Nakazawa already spilled on the mat and Nakazawa started anyway. The Dark Order immediately cut off Nakazawa and laid in a beating.

Nakazawa slipped out of a suplex and tried to make a tag. However, ladies and gentlemen, right here on AEW Dark, we saw the biggest betrayal since Benedict Arnold sold the plans to West Point to the British. Nakazawa reached for the tag, but Avalon jumped off the apron and walked away! Nakazawa was quickly pinned with Fatality.

They replayed the great Cody-MJF video package that aired on Dynamite.

Dr. Britt Baker defeated Miranda Alize

Alize, in her second AEW match, was here to get her first win, but the booking god’s were not kind to her and she went one-on-one with The Doctor.

Alize held her own briefly, but Baker quickly took over. Baker actually used an old William Regal trick where she got Alize down in the corner and back kicked her while the referee gave her a warning.

Baker hit a corkscrew fisherman neckbreaker for a near fall that she disagreed about. That gave Miranda a few seconds to make her comeback, but it wasn’t enough. Baker took her down with a slingblade and locked on the Lockjaw for the submission.

Private Party (Marq Quen & Isiah Kassidy) defeated Shawn Spears & Brandon Cutler (w/ Tully Blanchard)

Spears is really scraping the bottom of the barrel the last few weeks when it comes to getting tag team partners. From the winless Peter Avalon to the winless Brandon Cutler. What Cutler lacks in wins, he makes up for in having more polyhedral dice than anyone else in the locker room. Private Party spent three minutes throwing their beads to the crowd.

Cutler, Quen, and Kassidy had a great sequence where they went for moves on each other, but they kept being avoided or reversed. No one hit anything and it ended in a triple dropkick.

Spears did not like these shenanigans and demanded to be tagged in, which he did and took over when he got in. Cutler got back in and hit a nice series of moves on Private Party, before Spears tagged himself back in. The fans chanted “10,” and Spears shook his finger at the crowd and told them “no.”

Spears got the heat on Kassidy. While he distracted the referee, Tully tried to encourage Cutler to put the boots to Kassidy, which he refused to do. Kassidy eventually made the hot tag to Quen, who ran wild on both Spears and Cutler.

Quen did a dive over the top rope and Spears pulled Cutler in the way to take the blow. Spears yelled at Cutler and called him stupid. Then, ladies and gentlemen, right here on AEW Dark, in the biggest betrayal since Benedict Arnold sold the plans to West Point to the British, Spears threw his partner in the ring and walked out on him.

Cutler then hit the TPK on Quen and almost got the pin. Cutler begged Spears to come back. The fans chanted for Cutler as Spears walked off. Cutler then got finished off with Gin & Juice.

Just forget the same exact thing happened in the second match of the show.

That does it for Dark. Thank you for reading. Stay tuned for AEW Revolution tomorrow night and Dynamite next Wednesday!

AEW Dark results: Joey Janela vs. Shawn Spears

The Big News —

Proud & Powerful continued their quest to become the top contending team to SCU’s AEW Tag Team titles.

**********

It is the last AEW show for the entire year, so since I won’t see y’all until January 7, let’s get this out of the way. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Festivus, Happy New Year and safe travels to Tokyo for anyone going to Wrestle Kingdom!

Sammy Guevara defeated Brandon Cutler

They may call him a Spanish God, but Guevara is winless in singles competition going into this match. Cutler has won zero total matches, so something has to give here. Colt Cabana joined Excalibur behind the desk this week.

Guevara got the early advantage and lounged on the mat to mock Cutler, so when Cutler reversed momentum and knocked down Guevara, Cutler lounged on the mat to mock him.

Cutler and Guevara traded topes and suicide dives. They fought onto the apron, which is the hardest part of the ring, and Guevara hit a double foot stomp to a standing Cutler.

Guevara got some cheap heat by taking the mic and saying he doesn’t care about anyone in the arena. He set Cutler up for a big move from the top rope. However, Guevara saw that’s what the fans wanted, so he jumped down and slapped on a headlock.

Guevara hit a hook kick and a springboard cutter before hitting a Shooting Star Press. We almost had a Ted DiBiase-PJ Walker finish, as Cutler crucifixed a cocky Guevara, but Guevara kicked out. Finally, the Spanish God got serious and picked up his first singles win with a fireman’s carry into a knee strike to the back of Cutler’s head.

Jenn Decker interviewed Joey Janela. Janela said tonight it’s going down and he’s yelling timber. He told Shawn Spears he won’t remember tonight and the Bad Boy will be the one he won’t forget.

Proud & Powerful defeated Private Party, The Hybrid 2, and Best Friends in a four-way tag match

How long will it take for this match to break down into a crazy eight-way free for all? Jack Evans was not taking this match seriously at the start, which might help explain why TH2 has yet to win a two-man team match. He started taking it more seriously when Best Friends had their way with him.

Four minutes into the match we got our answer as to how long it would take before the match broke down. Referee Bryce Remsburg made faces like there was nothing he could do. I shouldn’t bother pointing out that he could throw the match out if he’s lost control.

Everyone just kind of stopped and resumed their previously scheduled tag team match. Remsburg was allowing tags that he physically wouldn’t be able to see even if I suspend my disbelief. Santana and Ortiz pulled up Isiah Kassidy’s jersey and took turns raking his back, which led to everyone chanting Eddie Guerrero’s name when Santana did two consecutive suplexes.

Jack Evans got big heat by ripping Marq Quen off the corner, not allowing Kassidy to make the tag and actually causing him to tag in Chuck Taylor. Tags became optional at this point as you just ran in and hit moves at your leisure while the referee pointed his hand at you.

Santana and Ortiz went under the table to get some plunder and Orange Cassidy was just lounging on the conveniently placed ladder under the ring. They shoved the ladder back under. Best Friends did the Rainmaker Hug before doing a pair of topes, which was followed by an Asai moonsault by Jack Evans.

TH2 decided to attack Cassidy, so they pulled out the ladder…and Cassidy had disappeared. Cassidy came out and did a dive to TH2 while they stood befuddled outside the ring. Finally, Ortiz ran around the ring and hit everyone with his sock with the baseballs in it and in the ring they pinned Kassidy with the Street Sweeper.

Decker did a live in-arena interview with PAC next. PAC dragged out Michael Nakazawa, who he has apparently been beating up for the last six days. In actuality, they do acknowledge that Dark is taped the same night as Dynamite and are openly saying PAC has “only” been beating him up for two hours.

PAC put a chair around Nakazawa’s neck and gave Kenny Omega his final warning to give PAC his rubber match. PAC jumped off the ropes and landed just in front of Nakazawa as a statement to Omega.

Joey Janela defeated Shawn Spears (w/ Tully Blanchard)

First Shawn Spears and then MJF — who is the next friend to turn on Cody? We’ll find out eventually, but as for now Spears took the mic and said this is the last AEW match of 2019. He asked who was in the holiday spirit and the crowd didn’t know how to react.

Spears turned to a child and was about to tell him something that his parents told him a long time ago. His mom covered his ears and Spears seemed about to claim Santa wasn’t real when Santa Claus came out!

Santa gave the kid a high five and it was time for some pro wrestling. Spears attacked Santa at the bell, which seems to indicate he’ll be on the naughty list. Spears knocked off Santa’s hair and beard and…OH MY GOD IT’S JOEY JANELA! NO ONE SAW THIS COMING!

Janela did a suicide dive in full Santa gear as Colt Cabana tried to list all of Santa’s reindeer. Spears went for a chop, but Janela ducked and Spears laid a hard chop into the ring post.

Spears shook off the hand injury, laid out Janela, and went to the top rope for a move, but Janela rolled away. Spears ran to the other corner and went for it, but again Janela rolled away. Spears tried a third time and got the same result, so he gave up.

Janela ran and jumped off a chair onto Spears in the crowd before asking women to DM him. Janela found a man dressed as Jesus Christ in the crowd and brought him out for a brief second. I guess there is no separation between church and wrestling.

Spears and Tully Blanchard went for the spike piledriver, but Janela shoved Spears into the steps. Jesus continued to steal the show and encouraged Janela to not turn the other cheek and instead punch Tully. Spears did not allow Janela to beat up a 65-year-old man, so the match continued. Janela actually won with a top rope elbow drop.

Janela offered Spears a post-match beverage, but instead gave Spears a Stone Cold Stunner. Well if you’re gonna rip off someone, you may as well rip off the biggest star of the last 25 years. Things ended there and nothing else that may or may not have happened afterwards aired.

The show ended with Tony Schiavone and Dasha Gonzalez promising to have a Best Of episode next week on AEW Dark. Anyhoo, that does it for this week. Take care!

Two more matches announced for tonight’s AEW Dynamite

Two new matches have been added to tonight’s AEW Dynamite.

Kenny Omega & Hangman Page will team up to take on Kip Sabian and Shawn Spears. Page recently left The Elite, prefering to go his own way.

Luchasaurus, meanwhile, will take on Sammy Guevara in a singles match. The Jurassic Express confronted Inner Circle leader Chris Jericho last week, which will lead to a match between Jungle Boy and Chris Jericho on next week’s broadcast.

Already announced tonight is a Texas Street Fight between The Young Bucks and Santana & Ortiz, as well as Emi Sakura vs. Big Swole, who has officially signed with the company.

MJF will also have an answer to Cody’s challenge that he made last week. Cody will also be in action, teaming with QT Marshall to take on The Butcher & The Blade, who attacked Cody two weeks ago.

Dynamite will take place tonight at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas.

Joey Janela vs. Shawn Spears added to AEW Full Gear

A new match has been added to Full Gear.

Joey Janela will face Shawn Spears in a singles match. This was confirmed on the AEW Countdown show that was posted shortly after Dynamite ended tonight.

The feud started on the episode of AEW Dark that aired Tuesday. Tully Blanchard, who manages Spears, approached Janela backstage towards the end of the show and said he didn’t like how Janela treated him the last time they met, which was on an episode of Being the Elite. Spears then attacked Janela, jamming cigarettes down Janela’s throat as the show ended.

On Dynamite tonight, Spears defeated Brandon Cutler in a quick match and continued to attack him after the bell rang, setting up a death valley driver on a steel chair. Janela came out for the save, driving off Spears.

Full Gear will take place this Saturday, November 9, at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.
