Three matches have been made official for next week’s episode of NXT.
– Dakota Kai and Rhea Ripley will face off in a number one contender’s match on NXT next Wednesday. The winner will challenge for Io Shirai’s NXT Women’s Championship at TakeOver XXX on Saturday, August 22.
Shirai retained her title against Tegan Nox in the main event of NXT two weeks ago but was then laid out by a kick to the face from Kai. On tonight’s NXT, Shirai teamed up with Nox and defeated Candice LeRae & Kai after Kai forced LeRae to tag back in.
Kai did a backstage interview later on tonight’s NXT and said she isn’t a team player anymore. Kai declared that she’s the number one contender to Shirai’s title, but Ripley then confronted Kai. Ripley said the next shot at Shirai’s title is hers and she doesn’t mind going through anyone who thinks otherwise.
– In another match with TakeOver implications, Damian Priest vs. Ridge Holland vs. Oney Lorcan is set for next week’s NXT. The winner will qualify for the ladder match for the vacant North American Championship at TakeOver XXX.
Holland, a former rugby player whose real name is Luke Menzies, is part of the NXT UK brand.
Bronson Reed and Dexter Lumis have already qualified for the ladder match. It will feature five wrestlers in total.
– The NXT Tag Team titles will be on the line next Wednesday as Imperium (Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner) defend against the Undisputed Era (Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish). Imperium defeated Ever-Rise on NXT tonight but were then attacked by all four members of Undisputed Era after.
In an interview with TMZ, former WWE star Mark Henry said he is upset with Lio Rush over his recent comments and claimed he is considering a defamation suit against the former WWE star.
On Thursday, Rush tweeted that comments Henry made last May still needed to be addressed, referring to things Henry said on Busted Open Radio in 2019. At the time, the 25-year-old was taking a break for most of the spring and summer due to some reported backstage issues.
The 48-year-old Henry said he had tried to help Rush navigate things in WWE, but Rush didn’t see it that way. He continued to tag Henry in tweets the past few days, but Henry specifically took umbrage with the following:
Rush claimed he tried to call into Busted Open while Henry was on, but the phone number didn’t work.
In his talk with TMZ, the WWE Hall-of-Famer said that he has helped around 80% of his estimated 25 current Performance Center trainees of color get there, and chalked up Rush’s actions of late to promoting his album. Henry said he would have helped Rush do an angle of sorts if he wanted.
“You can’t question my blackness. Like nobody can question my blackness, pull my black card. No, not allowed. Nobody,” he said.
He said his lawyers aren’t happy and would like to sue Rush, but Henry didn’t come off as if that was seriously being considered.
As the two continued to go at it Sunday on Twitter, Henry claimed he asked WWE to not fire Rush last year and said it was the last time they would speak unless Rush apologized. He also threw a jab at AEW’s Joey Janela who went after Henry for threatening to sue someone who is out of work and has a family to raise.
Rush said he could sue Henry for ‘de framing my name on national radio [sic]’ and that Henry deserves to be known for the ‘the greatest heel turn ever and not for threatening to sue a 25-year-old during a pandemic’.
Ahead of the tournament starting on Friday, wXw has announced a change to this year’s 16 Carat Gold.
Jeff Cobb is replacing Lio Rush in the three-night, 16-wrestler tournament. wXw wrote that the change was made due to Rush being pulled by WWE: “Unfortunately WWE has pulled @itsLioRush from #wXw16Carat due to his WWE schedule. We are as dissapointed about this as you are. We are excited to confirm @RealJeffCobb as Lio’s replacement for #wXw16Carat.”
16 Carat Gold is taking place in Oberhausen, Germany this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The first round matches are:
Marius Al-Ani vs. Cara Noir
Jeff Cobb vs. Alexander James
Bandido vs. Julian Pace

The Rotation vs. Puma King
Lucky Kid vs. Jurn Simmons
Black Taurus vs. Shigehiro Irie
It was also announced yesterday that Alex Shelley, who was only set for 16 Carat Gold night two, would no longer be appearing. wXw posted a statement from Shelley and tweeted: “We regret to inform you that [Alex Shelley] won’t be at #wXw16Carat. As Alex works with immunocompromised patients in a clinic in his real job, he cannot risk exposing himself to a possible infection with the corona virus by traveling to Germany & wrestling.”
On the Friday, March 13 episode of 205 Live, Lio Rush will be one of the captain’s in the NXT vs. 205 Live originals Captain’s Challenge match. The 10-man elimination tag match will be Rush, Isaiah “Swerve” Scott, Tyler Breeze, Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch vs. Tony Nese, Mike Kanellis, Brian Kendrick, Ariya Daivari & Jack Gallagher.
Joaquin Wilde took the rubber match in his third 205 Live meeting with Raul Mendoza.
Tensions between NXT’s and 205 Live’s respective teams increased during the Lio Rush-Tony Nese main event as their 10 man tag match inches closer.
**Show Recap**
Joaquin Wilde defeated Raul Mendoza via pinfall
The match began with immediate offense saw Mendoza deliver a dropkick in the opening moments. The pace quickly slowed as Mendoza overwhelmed Wilde with a whip to the corner followed by a prolonged nothing-happening mat wrestling segment. For a crowd as uninterested as the one watching this match, this did nothing but encourage their continued lack of attentiveness.
Wilde slowly worked his way to his feet and gained some advantage. After a small struggle, Wilde delivered a power bomb to Mendoza who was seated on the top rope. Mendoza rolled to the outside and Wilde delivered a stair assisted hurricanrana. To no avail, Wilde attempted to engage the crowd with the sound of a DJ horn.
Eventually, the pair traded roll-ups, roll throughs, and reversals in the fastest and most interesting sequence of the match. After a failed rollup attempt by Mendoza, Wilde found himself in position for his Wilde thing finisher, helping him score the win and the 2-1 advantage over his rival.
Seeing as there was little to no interest in this to begin with, the match itself was fairly lackluster with no reason to revisit this rivalry.
— A hype package played reminding viewers of the NXT vs. 205 Live ten-man tag scheduled for 205 Live in two weeks. The team captain of team NXT, Lio Rush, and the team captain of 205 Live, Tony Nese, are set for action in the main event.
Lio Rush defeated Tony Nese (w/Mike Kanellis) via disqualification
Both guys got a slightly louder crowd reaction compared to the previous match. After the bell sounded, Nese took a knee and flexed his arm for the first truly audible reaction of the night.
After a fairly typical WWE style feeling out process, Rush delivered an enziguri that sent Nese to the outside. Nese quickly found his way back into the ring and passed through a rollup attempt to deliver a swift kick to the head of Rush. Nese continued to work Rush with slow heelish offense that provided Rush with an opportunity to gain match control. Rush did so with a perfectly executed corkscrew dive variation.
Rush’s control did not last long. Mike Kanellis (who accompanied Nese to the ring) distracted Rush after he ascended to the top rope. Nese struck the distracted Rush and executed a gutbuster, maintaining his control long enough to perform a visually stunning springboard moonsault.
Nese tried to follow with a superplex but was blocked. Rush regained control with a crossbody followed by a float over DDT. Rush went for a second crossbody but was caught by Nese who transformed the catch into a bridging suplex.
Nese rolled Rush to his belly and locked in a deep boston crab. Rush broke free and delivered a spin kick, but Kanellis succeeded in gaining Rush’s attention after he stepped onto the apron. Rush knocked Kanellis to the floor and hit Nese with the come up. When Rush attempted to pin Nese, Kanellis hit the ring and attacked Rush.
Nese and Kanellis took turns stomping Rush long enough for Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch of Team NXT to come to the aid of their captain. The two teams brawled into the back leaving only Rush in the ring. Before Rush could make it to his feet, he was attacked by the returning, and now heavily tattooed, Jack Gallagher.
Gallagher, now a part of Team 205 Live, stood tall after Rush was brutalized.
Final Thoughts:
This week’s show featured two fairly uninteresting matches, both of which had little to no heat. Neither match was bad in execution per se. They were both just boring and devoid of heat, even with the angles that led to them.

The 27-year-old Garza submitted Lio Rush to win the title in a fantastic match that opened up the show. It’s the first taste of NXT gold for Garza who signed with WWE this spring.
Following the match and while NXT was in commercial, Garza did a babyface promo and brought his girlfriend into the ring. He pulled out the ring and asked her in Spanish to marry him. They aired the proposal when they came back from break.

Two title matches and the brands fallout from TakeOver: WarGames and Survivor Series are set for tonight’s NXT.

On the eve of American Thanksgiving let us be thankful for another night of live pro wrestling.
The show opened with hip hop artist Josiah Williams leading a slew of the NXT roster to the ring with a live rap song. The crowd got involved with call and response as video highlights from TakeOver: War Games were mixed in with the live performance at Full Sail.
Undisputed Era interrupted the concert to scold and malign everyone celebrating. They were not responsible for success, the credit instead goes to Undisputed Era according to NXT Champion Adam Cole. Those celebrating were claiming “we are NXT”, when Cole claimed Undisputed Era is the reason for NXT’s success.
Tommaso Ciampa stopped Cole’s speech. Ciampa was flanked by Keith Lee, Matt Riddle and Dominik Dijakovic. Ciampa cut a promo where he announced that Lee & Dijakovic would be challenging Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish for the NXT Tag Team Championship.
Ciampa then addressed to the NXT Championship as he called it by his pet name.
“Goldie, I told you that you had to wait because daddy was going to war,” Ciampa said. “Well, war’s over, and daddy won.”
Ciampa went on to say no one in Undisputed Era is standing in his way. Ciampa continued issuing a warning to Cole before Finn Balor entered the scene. Balor walked past Undisputed Era and said to Ciampa, “It looks like I’m standing in your way.”
Ciampa then challenged Balor to a match tonight, and Balor accepted the challenge. The match is apparently on for later tonight.
Keith Lee then gave Ciampa a vote of confidence before ordering Fish & O’Reilly into the ring for their match because it was “basking season” on NXT.
Cut to a shot of the announcers where Beth Phoenix welcomed viewers to the show. She announced that Mauro Ranallo was not there, but they were looking forward to seeing him next week . He was replaced on commentary by Tom Phillips to join Phoenix alongside Nigel McGuninness.

Strong as a replacement pinned Dijakovic to retain the titles. Bobby Fish started the match, but he was soon replaced by Strong.
Lee press slammed Fish over the ropes outside of the ring on to O’Reilly before a commercial break. Roderick Strong during the break replaced Fish. Strong was wearing street clothes such as jeans and shoes.
Fish was taken out of the match for “medical reasons”, and Strong was allowed to replace him because of the Freebird rule. That was the explanation for Fish leaving the match. Nigel on coommentary speculated on a possible knee injury.
The match continued while they figured everything out. Before long Dijakovic was suplexing Lee on top of Strong & O’Reilly. Strong a moment later targeted Dijakovic’s knee.
Strong was working the knee was the show went to another commercial break. This time no split screen. The show returned from break with Undisputed Era still working the leg.
Lee eventually cleaned house after a hot tag. He smashed O’Reilly & Strong with splashes and strikes. They tried to double-team him, but Lee tossed them over his shoulder. Lee teased a dive, and Strong clipped his leg. O’Reilly then delivered a flying knee off the apron.
Lee was weakened, but he soon tagged out. Dijakovic ran wild. He went for a chokeslam, but O’Reilly caught him in a triangle. Dijakovic powered out with a deadlift powerbomb while also grabbing Strong for a chokeslam at the same time. This popped the crowd and led to a close near fall.
Dijakovic went for his finisher, but O’Reilly escaped. Lee was again chop blocked at ringside, and Dijakovic made a save with a flip dive to the outside. A double down led into them teasing a sunset bomb. Kai went to use Nox’s knee brace, but for some reason she was unable to do so. LeRae just powerbombed her instead for a near fall.
LeRae missed a springboard quebrada, and Kai hit her finisher. LeRae still kicked out at two and a half. LeRae moments later executed La Mistica and turned that into the Gargano Escape.
Kai rolled out of the ring where she retrieved the knee brace she brought to the ring. LeRae was going for a tope when Kai hit her with the brace for the DQ.

There was some cool video game reversals, which led to a double down where they both kicked each other. The fight spilled onto the apron.
Tozawa gave Rush a German suplex to the floor. They teased a double count-out, but both leapt back in the ring to break the count.

The match was just getting underway when NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler and the Horsewomen walked on stage. Lee landed a spin kick and pinned Borne.

The crowd heckled Baszler with chants for Rhea Ripley. Interrupting Baszler’s speech, Ripley then made her way to the ring. Baszler and the Horsewomen powdered.

Finn Balor defeated Tommaso Ciampa

This was billed as the first match between the two. The match was back-and-forth during much of the early portion. That is until Ciampa catapulted Balor into a ring post before a commercial break. The split screen was also back for the main event.
Balor cut off Ciampa during the break, and Ciampa made a comeback when the commercials were done. Balor crashed into the barricade when Ciampa knocked him off the apron with a knee strike. Another knee strike by Ciampa netted him a near fall.

Balor executed a reverse DDT on the belt, but was not DQ’d because the belt being in the ring was apparently ruled accidental. Ciampa kicked out on a cover.
Cole then interfered as he hit Ciampa with a kick, and Balor hooked him to deliver the 1916. Balor covered Ciampa for the pin as Cole looked on with a smirk.
Posing over a prone Ciampa after the match, Cole clutched his championship and flashed the Undisputed Era hand sign. Balor displayed the finger guns as Cole went to pat him on the back. Balor suddenly dropped Cole with a Pele kick out of nowhere. Balor stood alone as the show faded to black.
