NWA Power results: Kerry Morton defends the Junior Heavyweight title

Tuesday’s edition of NWA Power was the third consecutive show from the Highland Park, IL tapings. Joe Galli and Tim Storm got right into the action.

Carnage (w/ Aron Stevens) defeated Jax Dane (w/ Chris Silvio Esq.) by countout

Usually, when you start a show with two guys in the ring, you would want them to get going fast and get the crowd excited. These two thought they should do the opposite by staring at each other and locking in rest holds. They started fighting on the outside where Carnage really took advantage. A snap slam actually got a near fall only about three minutes into the match.

Dane kicked out and countered Carnage and when he went for a spear, Stevens held his leg. Dane moved to the outside and tried to attack Stevens but when Carnage distracted him and the ref, Dane got hit with Stevens’ loaded glove. Dane looked extremely dizzy and couldn’t return to the ring for the 10 count. He then got into announcer Tim Storm’s face after the match for some reason. Storm later talked about how he and Dane had a history but that’s all it was.

Mike Knox & Trevor Murdoch defeated Russ Jones & Schaff

This was just all about putting Knox and Murdoch over. The entirety of the commentary was about how they won the Crockett Cup and are the “best tag team in the world.” Jones and Schaff are actually the AAW Tag Team Champions and the commentary made sure to explain that. It created a weird dynamic where they were trying to get both of these teams over in different ways which didn’t really help either of them.

The Cup winners were still in control for most of it, using their size and teamwork to cut off the ring. Murdoch got the pop-up spinebuster for a near fall, but Schaff broke it up. Knox then hit his own pop-up spinebuster to set up Jones for the high-low and the pin.

– May Valentine was with Mims, asking how he was going to handle Chris Silvio Esq. at ringside tonight for his match with Troop. He then cut a whole promo about how scary his opponent was and how he wasn’t going to back down to him or anybody else.

Blake Troop (w/ Chris Silvio Esq.) defeated Mims by referee’s decision

Troop’s whole gimmick is that he’s an MMA fighter as well as being a professional wrestler. That is true, but for this specific match, the storyline was that he had a jiu-jitsu tournament over the weekend and he injured his ribs, which were still taped up.

This was a pretty slow match that was smooth for the most part. They went back and forth until Troop locked in a kneebar that looked excruciating. Mims was able to get the ropes, but Troop left it in as long as he could. They kept going back and forth until Mims locked in a bear hug. Troop went for Mims’ eyes to get out and locked in the kneebar again. Mims was screaming in pain and he was reaching for the ropes when he passed out from the pain.

– Eric Jackson was the lucky man to get interviewed by Valentine next. She asked about his tag team match for next week. Jackson put his tag team partner (Robert Anthony) over until Fodder interrupted and put himself over, saying he destroys anyone in the ring.

Jordan Clearwater & Odinson defeated U.S. Tag Team Champions The Country Gentlemen (AJ Cazana & Anthony Andrews) in a non-title match

So, last week we found out the two teams that are gonna face each other at next month’s PPV for a shot at these titles. This week, the champions lost a non-title match to two guys that have never teamed together? This immediately made me not care.

Clearwater and Odinson even had an argument about who would start. Cazana started the match for the champions and got a quick advantage. The champs cut off the ring on Clearwater and they dominated. Odinson finally got into the match and turned things around. They cut off the ring on Cazana until he hit a lariat for the Andrews hot tag. He ran wild on both men with some crazy power moves, throwing Clearwater and Odinson around like they were dolls. Odinson regained the advantage and pounced him mid-air.

They rid the ring of Cazana and set up Andrews for another pounce and the clean win. So, again, a team that has never tagged before just beat the champions clean a week after the champions got their PPV match.

– This week’s edition of DLZ was just a quick run-down recap of everything that’s happened in the past few weeks. It seems like a thing that the locker room has a lot of fun with but he talks so fast you can’t understand anything he’s saying. But I’ll take his word for it!

– May Valentine checked in with Dak Draper who was making sure that his friend Mims was okay as he went to the hospital with a bad hamstring injury. But next week, Draper is facing off against Damage and Chris Adonis in a three-way, which should be pretty exciting. Draper talked about how this was his big opportunity to prove he is worthy of the now-vacant NWA National Championship. But he started the promo by saying, “May, what does NWA stand for?’ After she said the correct answer, he said, “No, May. It stands for opportunity.” What?

NWA Junior Heavyweight Champion Kerry Morton (w/ Ricky Morton) defeated Matt Vine to retain

Morton made his way to the ring and told the commentary team to acknowledge the champion. He is really exceptional at being a heel. They started the match quickly with a tie-up, quickly into running the ropes, and a shoulder tackle by Vine. Morton locked in another submission hold and started jawing with Storm — the second wrestler of the night to have a problem with the former NWA World Champion.

They kept the pace high with mostly Morton on offense, using the ropes and targeting the right leg of Vine. Vine took advantage of Morton showboating and hit a clean uranage. Morton rolled out of the ring to his dad, who surprisingly didn’t interfere, and then connected with the Showstopper for the win. I believe it’s official now that Colby Corino will take on Kerry Morton for the title at NWA 75, but you never know with this company.

NWA Power results: The World is a Vampire tour from Australia

Kyle Davis hosted this week’s edition of NWA Power which featured matches from the NWA vs. WAOA portion of The World is A Vampire Festival that stopped at Ballarat, Australia’s Kryal Castle on April 23rd.

The Southern 6 (Alex Taylor & Silas “Thrillbilly” Mason) defeated Caveman Ugg & Jake Taylor

Davis was in the ring with the competitors and a guy with a knight’s suit on. It was Sir Phillip if anyone knows who that is, and he announced that the matches could commence. Thank you, Phillip.

The commentary team was quick to point out that Alex Taylor and Jake Taylor have no relation. Ugg and Jake were destroying Alex, but he got out quickly to tag in Mason. They got the heat on Ugg and worked him over. Part of that was Mason grabbing the nasty Caveman’s foot and biting his toes. Gross.

Jake got his own hot tag that was interrupted by Mason and Taylor. Mason hit his signature Thrillride onto Ugg but was quickly thrown out of the ring by Jake who was then thrown out by Alex so he could pin Ugg for the win.

Natalia Markova defeated Aysha by DQ

Aysha was the hometown favorite from Melbourne, and cut a promo before the match talking about how she just got back from a tour in the U.S.

They started hot in this one, going back and forth with armdrags and reversals. You could easily tell Markova was the veteran as Aysha is shockingly only 23. An early cutter by Markova set up a nearfall. Aysha fought back in and got her own nearfall with a Russian leg sweep. A simple counter on the four turnbuckle spots continued the back and forth until they were both knocked down.

They both traded near falls and Markova set up something in the corner but was interrupted by NWA Women’s TV Champion Kenzie Paige. She hit Markova with a superkick that ended the match by DQ. Aysha even attacked Paige to show she did not want it to end that way.

Slex defeated Mercurio

The fans really did not like Mercurio, but they did like Slex. Mercurio almost got hot in the match, but Slex’s power proved too much. He did play heel though, so he was able to get a few nearfalls until they did a cool near-suplex spot that Slex got the best of.

A few pinning combos and strikes later, Mercurio locked in a rest hold that Slex fought out of, leading to his comeback. After a little delay, Slex finally hit a Blue Thunder bomb, but that didn’t put down Mercurio either. They kept going back and forth with Mercurio kicking out of a superplex. The match lost me at this point as these two had no chemistry and just kept going with weird, lackluster work. This match was about eight minutes longer than it should have been and finally ended with a Slexecution out of nowhere for the pin.

NWA Junior Heavyweight Champion Kerry Morton defeated Adam Brooks to retain the title

After a long night of wrestling, I was actually excited about this one as I have seen Brooks a few times in Deadlock Pro at the start of the year. Morton cut a complete heel promo before the match, burying the town and the women in the front row. Brooks also talked a bit about how he was going to hurt Morton for the title.

They traded headlocks to start, took it slow, and went at each other in a good way. You could tell when Brooks flipped the switch from being a wrestler to a fighter. He was really dominating until Morton started using the ropes to work over Brooks’ arm. This was just perfect heel work from Morton.

Brooks finally turned it around with a leg sweep to the middle turnbuckle. A superplex was teased, but Morton fell off the top rope. Brooks went for a top rope dive just for Morton to get the knees up. They started going back and forth again with action that looked so awesome and so smooth.

Morton got trapped in the corner and right when Brooks looked like he might have a real chance, Morton hit the Showstopper for the win and successful title defense.

NWA Power results: Kerry Morton vs. Mecha Wolf

NWA Power opened with Joe Galli interviewing Chris Adonis, asking how his preparations are going for his World title match against Tyrus at NWA 312. Tyrus then made his way onto screen after Adonis said that the Master Lock would take the title from him. Tyrus talked about how he was the bogeyman underneath the bed of all the Internet fans, and claimed Adonis couldn’t lock the Master Lock on someone as big as him.

Kenzie Paige defeated Ashley D’Amboise

This was a short match, but one that was decent given the time it had. Paige looked good as usual, and D’Amboise was able to show a little bit of her ability before the finish.

A promo package before the match with Paige dismissing D’Amboise as a threat. D’Amboise talked about being a great French Canadian and that Paige was a dirty American, so it’s hard to know who the babyface is here. Paige called D’Amboise incompetent in French, which was a nice touch. This showed the personalities of both wrestlers.

The babyface/heel confusion continued as D’Amboise and Paige both pulled each other’s hair in the opening moments and after an exchange, they crashed to the mat while pulling each other’s hair again. D’Amboise hit a nice neckbreaker for a two-count. Paige drew D’Amboise in and necked her on the middle rope and then hit a cutter after an exchange for the pin.

– Trevor Murdoch talked about how the NWA decided to put him through a test with the big man he faced recently (Beast Mode) that he coined “Van Hammer Jr.” and that he was coming back to NWA Power Live to have a talk with the big man. Beast Mode is a far worse name than Van Hammer Jr.

Mike Knox defeated Stacee Alexander

Knox looked good in this one. Maybe he missed his calling as a babyface. I can’t believe I wrote that in 2023, but here we are.

Knox was over in this match, getting a lot of reaction being in his hometown, but also getting cheered due to how he took out Matt Cardona. Alexander was wearing a CYN shirt and after being beat around the ring by Knox for a few minutes, he raked Knox’s eyes and got a bit of heat before Knox hit the Knoxout for the win.

– May Valentine was with Bobby Fulton and they discussed The Fixers mocking him and stealing the NWA U.S. Tag Team titles. Fulton then offered an open challenge to either Fixer, saying he was an old man but he was going after them for disrespecting both he and the titles. Valentine suggested that his health struggles might prevent him from doing that. Fulton said that it may be true and that his voice is evidence of the throat cancer he had, but he was going to stand up and do the right thing. I sincerely hope he isn’t going to wrestle, but man, this was a good babyface promo.

– Valentine asked about Rolando Freeman’s relationship with Aron Stevens, and Freeman said that Stevens betrayed him like he did Valentine. Freeman blamed Stevens for getting in his head and causing him to go out to fight Tyrus for the title where he failed immediately. Freeman said he was coming for Stevens and was going to get some revenge for Valentine, too.

NWA TV Champion Thom Latimer defeated Rhett Titus to retain the title

This was a solid match that only went around four minutes, limited by the 6:05 time limit of all TV title matches on Power. But, it was good given the time it had.

Latimer and Titus exchanged a lot of technical wrestling throughout. Latimer doesn’t show that side of his work very often, but he did a good job here. Titus, of course, is quite experienced in that style, being a part of The Foundation in ROH. Titus went up and over in the corner and Latimer hit a spear out of the corner for a two-count. Latimer immediately went for the crossface, but Titus blocked, so Latimer went back to the knee that he worked on early on and transitioned into an STF for the submission.

– Thrillbilly Silas was backstage with Valentine and disheartened because he didn’t get the NWA National title. He then called out Brady Pierce, saying he was going to climb back to the top. Pollo Del Mar emphasized that it was not personal, but Silas was going to take Pierce out to get to the top.

Kerry Morton defeated Mecha Wolf

This was easily the best match on the show with these two having a nice basic match.

Wolf used a series of submission attempts after hitting an armdrag off the top rope and Morton almost went out in a Koji clutch shortly after. Wolf went for a double jump moonsault off the middle rope, but Morton dodged and hit some punches in the corner. Wolf hit a tornado DDT for a two count.

Wolf went for a power bomb, but Morton countered and almost got a three count. After this, Bestia 666 made his way down to ringside, but because he didn’t have a manager’s license, the referee tried to get rid of him. Bestia passed a Tag Team title belt to Wolf, but the referee caught him and he turned around into a jumping knee from Morton and a GTR for the pinfall.

Final Thoughts:

This was a pretty good episode by NWA standards with simple storyline progression and some decent wrestling. The only problem was that it wasn’t must see and in today’s wrestling landscape, that begs the question: ultimately, who is this show for and can it grow their audience?

MLW Fusion results: Von Erichs vs. Ricky & Kerry Morton

Joe Dombrowski and Rich Bocchini welcomed us to Charlotte, North Carolina and ran down the card for tonight: Marshall & Ross Von Erich are forced to face their friends in Ricky Morton and his son Kerry, Myron Reed defends his Middleweight title against TJP, plus the return of Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat.

**********

Cesar Duran came to the ring to open the episode and said Charlotte is no Mexico and is a trash can full of ghosts. He talked foul of the legends and older wrestlers who have graced Charlotte over the years, which of course brought out Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat to confront him.

Steamboat told us all that he was the guest matchmaker for tonight as Duran is under investigation by MLW. As Duran was being led away by security, a masked henchman tried to attack Steamboat but “The Dragon” got the better of him.

Steamboat was about to tell us some good news, but Richard Holliday and Alicia Atout decided to interrupt and try to get Steamboat to announce Holliday as the number one contender. Atout said her man wants “a big match.” Steamboat teased announcing Alex Hammerstone vs. Holliday but instead gave him Matt Cross.

Emilio Sparks caught up with new MLW Tag Team Champions EJ Nduka & Calvin Tankman. Tankman dedicated their title win to his baby daughter. They were then congratulated by Middleweight Champion Myron Reed before his title defense against TJP.

MLW Middleweight Champion Myron Reed defeated TJP to retain his title

In a pre-match video package, TJP said he was bigger, stronger, and better than Reed, and if Reed was to do what TJP did by the time he was 24, Reed would need to live for 100 years. Reed said he didn’t care how long TJP had been doing this and it was his job to slay the dragon and get him out of here.

They had a really good match that built slowly and was given plenty of time to reach a hot finish.

After an early exchange, Reed extended his hand — but TJP took a cheap shot. Reed got his revenge moments later with a dropkick to the face, but the champion’s shine didn’t last too long as he landed hard on his shoulder and TJP drove him into the ring post.

TJP pulled out his usual repertoire of slow methodical heel traits like boot scrapes mixed in between his crisp fluid transitions and targeted attacks. He kept going back to the shoulder, locking in an octopus hold before switching to a surfboard.

Reed had enough of the cocky TJP, so he took his chance and hit a huge dive to the outside to swing the match in his favor. Inside, Reed hit a leg drop while the challenger hung on the middle rope, then hit a big enzuigiri to floor TJP.

Reed tried to hit his running cutter to the floor while TJP was on the apron, but TJP reversed to a neckbreaker on the apron. TJP then hit a frog splash for a close near fall. TJP locked in a Fujiwara armbar after Reed missed a springboard 450 splash, but the champion got to the ropes.

TJP went for a second frog splash, but Reed caught him in mid-air with a cutter out of nowhere to pick up the win and retain his title.

Richard Holliday (w/ Alicia Atout) defeated Matt Cross

Holliday was quick to be the aggressor, but Cross had the crowd on their feet minutes later with a handspring elbow and a dive to the floor.

Cross was tripped while on the middle rope and he dropped back and neck-first on the top turnbuckle. Holliday took him out with a hard clothesline, then Atout added insult to injury with a slap behind the referee’s back.

Cross fired back with a springboard crossbody, but Holliday returned with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker as the action started swinging back and forth. Cross reversed Holliday’s finisher before he hit his Cross Cutter, but Holliday kicked out.

Holliday hit a pop-up right hand after he dodged Cross’ Shooting Star Press. Holliday finally put Cross away with his suplex swinging neckbreaker “2008” finisher.

Bocchini tried to get a word with Holliday and Atout, but Atout stole the mic as she was “the true interview queen.” Holliday then told us all that The Dynasty was always about him and that he and Atout now run the show.

We had an in-depth look into Tag Team Champion EJ Nduka as we heard stories from earlier in his life as he pursued a career in football. Nduka spoke about being part of WWE developmental and being released due to budget cuts. Nduka said one of the calls that he got after being released was from MLW, and their vision for the future coincided with Nduka’s.

Sparks then caught up with Alex Kane and Mr. Thomas, but they blew off his question when he tried to ask who was funding their Bomaye Fight Club.

Marshall & Ross Von Erich defeated Ricky & Kerry Morton

Kerry Morton and Ross Von Erich had a good early exchange. When Kerry’s dad tagged in, the Mortons hit some fan friendly double-team moves in this face vs. face matchup.

The Von Erichs hit the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express double dropkick finisher, which didn’t sit too well with Ricky as the Von Erichs started to show a few small heel tendencies. Moments later, after breaking up a pin, Ricky Morton hit Ross with a Destroyer to the shock of the announce team.

Marshall locked in The Claw on Ricky. Kerry tried to get Marshall to break the hold and shouted “What are you doing?” as the friendly rivalry started turning a bit sour. Ross grabbed Kerry and rattled him with a few right hands before helping his brother hit The Claw Slam to pick up the win.

After the bell, the two teams had a shoving match before Julius Smokes came out and bad mouthed all four competitors, which caused the distraction so 5150 could come through the crowd and attack them from behind.

Even after their heated match, the Von Erichs and Mortons regrouped and sent Rivera and Slice Boogie packing as Fusion went off the air.

Ricky & Kerry Morton are making their MLW debuts at SuperFight. It was announced last month that The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) are going on a farewell tour so that Morton can focus more on teaming with his son Kerry and on the behind the scenes of the pro wrestling business.

The Von Erich brothers were supposed to challenge 5150 (Slice Boogie & Danny “Limelight” Rivera) for the MLW Tag Team titles at last month’s Blood & Thunder tapings in Texas, but Ross & Marshall had to pull out of the show due to testing positive for COVID-19.

Ricky & Kerry Morton to make MLW debut at SuperFight

A pro wrestling legend and his son are set to make their MLW debuts later this month.

Ricky & Kerry Morton will debut for MLW at the promotion’s SuperFight tapings on Saturday, February 26. The tapings are being held at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“The father and son duo are taking advantage of MLW’s open door policy and look to show MLW’s tag team division the iconic southern tag team style the Mortons are masters of,” MLW wrote.

“A highly touted prospect, 20-year old Kerry Morton is a 3rd generation grappler trained by his father. Just like his father in the 1980s, Kerry looks to showcase his talents to the world in Charlotte’s Grady Cole Center.”

Last month, Ricky Morton announced that The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express would be going on a farewell tour. Morton wrote that he wanted to focus more on teaming with Kerry and on the behind the scenes of the wrestling business.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express’ farewell tour began with Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson losing to FTR at a show for Big Time Wrestling in January.

Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat is also returning to Charlotte to appear at the MLW SuperFight tapings. In storyline, Steamboat is the matchmaker for the night.

Here’s the updated SuperFight lineup:

  • MLW World Heavyweight Champion Alex Hammerstone defends against Davey Richards
  • Stairway to Hell match: Jacob Fatu vs. Mads Krugger
  • MLW National Openweight Champion Alex Kane defends against Calvin Tankman, Matt Cross, and ACH in a four-way match
