AEW Collision live results: MJF opens the show

Following his actions on AEW Dynamite, MJF opens this week’s AEW Collision from Southaven, MS.

The former AEW World Champion savagely attacked Daniel Garcia on Wednesday following his loss to Will Ospreay, bloodying him up with his Dynamite Diamond Ring and delivering a second rope tombstone piledriver, scurrying away when Ospreay made his way back to the ring.

The second men’s Owen Hart Foundation semifinal will take place as Hangman Page takes on Jay White. The winner faces Bryan Danielson this Wednesday to determine AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland’s challenger for August’s All In.

After being out since March, Riho will make her in-ring AEW return against Lady Frost. AEW Women’s World Champion Toni Storm will be in non-title action, taking on Trish Adora.

The Conglomeration (Mark Briscoe, Kyle O’Reilly & Orange Cassidy) will take on the Iron Savages (Jacked Jameson, Bulk & Bear).

We’ll also hear from new TNT Champion Jack Perry and from the Patriarchy (Christian Cage, Luchasaurus & Nick Wayne).

**********

It’s Saturday night, you know what that means. Collision starts with a recap of MJF’s attack on Daniel Garcia from this past Wednesday’s Dynamite, with words from Matt Menard telling MJF that he had better be sure that he finished the job. MJF made his way to the ring as Tony Schiavone & Nigel McGuinness were on the call.

MJF Town Hall

A good reset for MJF, as his reasons for turning on the fans were strong and logical. His vendetta against the fans allows him to go after any babyface he wants, with his focus seeming to be on Will Ospreay in particular.

MJF immediately dumps on the locals, calling them inbred. MJF said that Daniel Garcia was nothing but a pawn. He was never going to give Garcia a match at All In: Wembley and was always going to stab him in the back. MJF called Garcia a Make-A-Wish kid, having offered him the biggest match of his life only for Garcia to not answer him. After what he did to Garcia, MJF said that he would never wrestle again.

MJF then threw to footage from the August 2nd, 2023, episode of Dynamite where he opened up to the fans about his mental issues and the childhood bullying he endured. Back in the ring, MJF was furious at the fans for turning on him despite him opening up about those issues. He watched from home as people chanted Thank You Joe for taking the World Title from him. The fans turned on him in favor of people like Swerve Strickland, Kazuchika Okada, and Will Ospreay.

MJF said what he did wasn’t personal to Garcia, it was personal to the fans. He was going to take everything from the fans because what they like sucks. MJF said that the fans have ruined the promotion that he built, and the only way to fix it will be with him on top. MJF said that Will Ospreay was a child, who only cared about star ratings instead of Nielson ratings. MJF challenged Ospreay to a fight right now.

Ospreay’s music hit, but Schiavone noted that Ospreay wasn’t here. MJF said that Ospreay wasn’t here because he was a two-faced coward before telling the fans that they could thank him later.

The Conglomeration were backstage with Lexy Nair. Kyle O’Reilly was bummed out after Forbidden Door, but Mark Briscoe fired them up with the word of the day: epiphany. Failure was only in the mind, and they were going to get a piece of the Iron Savages tonight. As usual, Orange Cassidy didn’t care.

The Conglomeration (Kyle O’Reilly, Mark Briscoe & Orange Cassidy) defeated Iron Savages (Boulder, Bronson & Jacked Jameson)

I wondered what the point of putting O’Reilly against the Undisputed Kingdom was since they feuded very recently. But if the Conglomeration is going to be a regular unit, then making this a trios feud will be fun.

The Undisputed Kingdom made their way to the commentary table. After some shenanigans with the Savage Sauce, the Savages isolated O’Reilly as we went to a commercial. After the break, Briscoe got a hot tag in and ran wild. After some cajoling from Briscoe, Cassidy tagged in and ran wild on all three Savages. Cassidy and O’Reilly hit a high knee/chop block combination, leading to Cassidy scoring the win with an Orange Punch on Bronson.

TNT Champion Jack Perry spoke backstage in the reflection of his newly won championship. He challenged the first TNT Champion for the title, but he wasn’t ready then. Perry said that he was now ready to make the sacrifices needed to be champion and spoke as if he was issuing an open challenge for the title tonight.

We got a video package highlighting Swerve Strickland’s successful AEW World Championship defense at Forbidden Door.

Hangman Adam Page was backstage with Lexy Nair. When asked why he returned now, Page said it was because of convenience. Not for him, but for them, referring to the Young Bucks. They didn’t care about what he and his family were going through, it only mattered when they found an opportunity to use him. He knew why Hangman was back, this time referring to Swerve Strickland. Pronouns, pal. Hangman promised to his dying breath to go to Wembley Stadium and right the wrongs done to him in the past. When asked about wrestling a man he’s never beaten in Jay White in tonight’s tournament match, Page walked off.

Toni Storm (w/Luther & Mariah May) defeated Trish Adora (w/ The Infantry)

Adora took an early advantage, tying Storm up in several submissions. Storm came back with a hip attack that sent Adora off the apron. Storm then took the mic and threw it to commercial after requesting a standing ovation.

After the break, Adora caught Storm with a Bossman Slam backbreaker. Adora caught Storm with a kneeling German suplex but got tripped up on a corner charge. That allowed Storm to hit a hip attack and a DDT for a nearfall. A strike exchange ended with Storm catching a lariat and hitting the Storm Zero for the win.

We got a video package previewing Willow Nightingale vs. Mariah May in the Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Finals.

After a promo for the new Brodie Lee memorial Reeboks, Christian Cage & The Patriarchy were backstage. He said that people were shocked that he allowed Bullet Club Gold to speak to him that way last week. They had to google who the champions were because of how lackluster the champions were before running them all down one-by-one. Cage planned on bringing the Trios Championships to new heights, and hoped to bring out the Jay White that everyone thought they were getting when he signed to AEW.

Cage called in Kip Sabian, who was standing near their camera shot. Sabian said that he just lost his father. Cage said that Sabian should be happy that his father wasn’t around to see what a disappointment Sabian turned out to be. Cage then had Killswitch beat up Sabian off-screen.

TNT Championship Open Challenge – Jack Perry defeated Marko Stunt to retain

What a pull, getting Perry’s old partner Stunt for his first title defense. Stunt was fantastic here, bumping like a madman for Perry as the hometown crowd went wild for him. I wouldn’t be opposed to Stunt being a regular again if he can make everyone look as good as he helped Perry look. This was perfect for what they went out there to do.

Perry looked like he saw a ghost, seeing his former Jurassic Express partner and local hero Marko Stunt accept his challenge. Perry offered Stunt the chance to leave, but Stunt instead headbutted him and laid in the shots. Perry laid him out with a clothesline and laid in shots. Stunt went for a tornado DDT, but Perry lawn darted him into the turnbuckle for a sick nearfall.

The crowd chanted for Stunt as Perry laid the boots to him. Stunt fired up, catching Perry with a hurricanrana off of a suplex attempt. Stunt hit a tornado codebreaker before going to the top rope. Perry caught Stunt off the top rope and powerbombed him into the turnbuckle. Perry then hit the Glass Jaw knee for the win.

We got a video package on Bryan Danielson’s win on Dynamite, which advanced him to the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament finals.

Claudio Castagnoli defeated The Beast Mortos

This was a fun first-time encounter between these two international powerhouses. Powerhomes? They’re keeping Castagnoli warm for something, possibly a title challenge.

Mortos caught Castagnoli with a chop block, but Castagnoli came back with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker and a stomp. Mortos came back with a gamengiri and a powerslam for a nearfall. Mortos went for a rising knee in the corner but Castagnoli moved, sending Mortos over the top rope into a cameraman. Mortos avoided a baseball slide before hitting a tornillo to the floor. Castagnoli sent Mortos into the post before hitting a back suplex as we went to the commercial.

They traded strikes as we came back from the break, with Mortos scoring a nearfall with a pop-up Samoan drop. Mortos hit a step-up headbutt but ran into an uppercut. Mortos popped out of a Ricola Bomb and hit a spear for a nearfall. Castagnoli vaulted Mortos to the floor on a monkey flip attempt, then high-fived the cameraman Mortos ran into before hitting a running uppercut on the barricade.

Mortos came back, picking Castagnoli up and dropping him with a Bane-esque backbreaker for a nearfall. Castagnoli caught Mortos off the second rope with an uppercut, then hit the Giant Swing. Castagnoli hit a running lariat for the win.

Matt Menard was backstage with Lexy Nair. He suffered a concussion in the attack by MJF on Wednesday. Daniel Garcia is back at home in Buffalo, having lost all strength in the left side of his body. He will be making a full recovery, and Menard promised him that he’d let Garcia get his hands on him first. MJF didn’t know when that would be, but when it came, he wouldn’t get dancing Daniel Garcia. MJF would get Red Death.

Serena Deeb spoke on Riho’s return backstage. She spoke on their highly acclaimed match from Double or Nothing 2021, but warned Riho that she was stronger than she was back then.

Riho defeated Lady Frost

Always good to see Riho back in action. I was live for the Deeb/Riho match from Double or Nothing 2021, and it was a standout match. It’s interesting to see a downcard feud in the women’s division. No titles or massive grudge, just two talents looking to find out who is the better woman. I like it.

Frost started with the advantage, hitting a neckbreaker for a nearfall. Riho sidestepped a Frost corner charge, getting her in position for a 619 – or an 03 if you want the area code for Shinagawa, Japan. Riho hit a high cross for a nearfall as we went to commercial.

After the break, Riho sent Frost to the floor and hit a high cross to the floor. Frost avoided a double stomp and hit the Chilla Drilla for a nearfall. They traded strikes before Frost hit an overhead belly-to-belly suplex. Frost hit a high-arcing moonsault for a nearfall. Riho came back with a dragon suplex before hitting a leg-trap Code Red called Runhei – for reference, Kofi Kingston does a similar move called the SOS – for the win.

Shane Taylor Promotions & Top Flight were backstage with Lexy Nair, with a match set up between them for next week’s Rampage. They got in each other’s faces before leaving with no physicality.

We got a video package hyping the Samoa Joe vs. Chris Jericho Stampede Street Fight on next week’s Dynamite.

Owen Hart Foundation 2024 Men’s Tournament Semifinal Match – Hangman Page defeated Jay White

This was an awesome main event. These two had great chemistry, with White picking his spots against Page like a bullfighter sidestepping a raging bull. Several threads came together with the finish, with Jeff Jarrett and Christian Cage getting involved to set up future bouts. This was an odd match on paper, but it came together beautifully.

Ring announcer Bobby Cruise informed the crowd before the bell that the Bang Bang Gang were to be ejected from the building by order of The Young Bucks, as the Bucks continue to try and curry favor with Page. Page took the fight to White, laying in heavy strikes to White in and out of the ring. Page sent White flying with a fallaway slam, but White caught Page with a neck wringer across the ropes.

Page came back quickly, sending White to the floor with a triangle clothesline and a hard whip into the barricade. Back in the ring, White almost caught Page with a Blade Runner, but Page clawed at White’s face to escape before spinning him around in a sleeper hold.

After a commercial, Page was heavily lacerated as White caught Page’s leg with a Dragon Screw leg whip. White hammered Page with chops before clawing his eyes. White dropped Page with a DDT for a nearfall. Page hit a rolling elbow, but White caught him with a swift flatliner before hitting a deadlift German suplex.

The two fought to the apron as the announcers ran down the Dynamite card, with the addition of a Global Glory Four-Way Match between Claudio Castagnoli, Kyle Fletcher, PAC, & Tomohiro Ishii. Also announced was a match for Collision next week as Konosuke Takeshita would take on Tommy Billington in Calgary. Page sent White into the ring post before powerbombing him into the apron.

Page went for the Buckshot Lariat, but White slumped to the mat, baiting White into a small package for a nearfall. White caught Page with another Dragon Screw through the ropes, but Page came back with a pop-up powerbomb for a nearfall. Page went for another Buckshot, but White caught him with a uranage for a nearfall. White hit a sleeper suplex, but Page fought out of the Blade Runner. The two countered each other’s finishers before Page sent White into the referee.

Page got a visual cover with a Deadeye before whipping White with his belt. Jeff Jarrett came down to take the belt away from Page before getting escorted away by another referee. Christian Cage snuck into the ring to spear White, allowing Page to hit the Buckshot Lariat to clinch his spot in the tournament final. A bloody Page eyed up the Owen Trophy as the show ended.

The lineup for Saturday’s AEW Collision in Southaven, Mississippi, has been further bolstered with two new matches and promos from both Christian Cage and Jack Perry.

Former AEW Women’s Champion Riho will return to the AEW ring for her first match since March when she takes on Lady Frost. Riho recently returned to confront Serena Deeb after Deeb asked for tougher competition.

The Conglomeration (Mark Briscoe, Kyle O’Reilly & Orange Cassidy) will unite in trios action against the Iron Savages. Briscoe declared himself for the upcoming Blood & Guts on behalf of Team AEW while O’Reilly was taken out by The Elite when he attempted to defend Briscoe from an attack.

New TNT Champion Jack Perry (seen above) will be on hand to share his thoughts following his title win at Forbidden Door while The Patriarchy (Christian Cage, Luchasaurus & Nick Wayne) are also scheduled for the show to share their mind.

The additions join the previously announced MJF promo, the men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament semifinal between Jay White and Hangman Page, and AEW Women’s Champion Toni Storm vs. Trish Adora in non-title action.

Here’s the current lineup:

  • MJF promo
  • Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament semifinal: Hangman Page vs. Jay White
  • AEW Women’s Champion Toni Storm vs. Trish Adora in a non-title match
  • Jack Perry promo
  • The Patriarchy (Christian Cage, Luchasaurus & Nick Wayne) promo
  • Riho vs. Lady Frost
  • The Conglomeration (Mark Briscoe, Kyle O’Reilly & Orange Cassidy) vs. Iron Savages (Jacked Jameson, Bulk & Bear)

Jack Perry wins vacant TNT Championship at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door

Jack Perry is the new TNT Champion.

Perry grabbed the title in a ladder match that took place at Sunday’s Forbidden Door. In a match full of wild bumps and crazy ladder spots, Perry got the win after striking Mark Briscoe with a ladder, stepping over him in order to climb up the ladder and grab the title, winning the championship for the first time.

The title had been declared vacant after Adam Copeland broke his leg after jumping off the steel cage at Double or Nothing. Soon after, The Elite stripped Copeland of the title and was set to declare Perry the champion when Christopher Daniels came out on behalf of Tony Khan. Daniels instead announced that qualifying matches would take place across AEW programming to determine the six people to enter the match. Perry defeated Dustin Rhodes to qualify.

Since returning to AEW at April’s Dynasty pay-per-view, Perry has aligned himself with The Elite and took part in laying out Tony Khan. Despite being lit on fire, he pinned Bryan Danielson in the Anarchy in the Arena match that took place at Double or Nothing.

Jack Perry qualifies for TNT title ladder match at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door

Jack Perry is entering the TNT ladder match.

Perry defeated Dustin Rhodes with a running knee on AEW Dynamite to become the latest to qualify for the match that will determine a new TNT Champion at Forbidden Door on June 30 in New York.

After Adam Copeland injured his leg during his barbed wire steel cage match at Double or Nothing, The Elite stripped Copeland of the title and were prepared to put it on Perry, the only person in The Elite without a championship. However, Christopher Daniels came out and announced that he was the new interim EVP of AEW, and instead a ladder match would take place at Forbidden Door to determine a new champion.

Qualifying matches have taken place since then, with Konosuke Takeshita and Mark Briscoe advancing. Perry was seen watching Briscoe’s win and congratulated him, but said he would soon be TNT Champion.

Here is the updated lineup for Forbidden Door:

  • AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland defends against Will Ospreay
  • Ladder match for the vacant TNT Championship: Konosuke Takeshita vs. Mark Briscoe vs. Jack Perry vs. TBA
  • Title for title: TBS Champion Mercedes Mone vs. NJPW Strong Women’s Champion Stephanie Vaquer
  • AEW Women’s Championship: Toni Storm defends against Mina Shirakawa

TNT Championship qualifying match added to AEW Dynamite

A TNT Championship qualifying match has been added to  AEW Dynamite.

Dustin Rhodes will face Jack Perry after Rhodes called out Perry on this week’s AEW Collision. After defeating Johnny TV, Rhodes called out Perry, saying that he was excited to see Perry back in AEW until he beat up Tony Khan. He said that growing up Perry had a silver spoon in his mouth and that he was mediocre because he was a follower, not a leader. Rhodes then announced the match, telling Perry that he would destroy him.

The match was later announced as being a TNT Championship qualifying match, with the winner advancing to the ladder match at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door to crown a new champion.

Perry scored the winning fall at AEW Double or Nothing, pinning Bryan Danielson. Since then, he has focused on capturing the TNT title, congratulating Mark Briscoe on his qualifier win on Dynamite but insisting he would be the next champion.

Here is the updated lineup for AEW Dynamite:

  • AEW International Champion Will Ospreay defends against Rey Fenix
  • TBS Champion Mercedes Mone defends against Zeuxis
  • TV Time with Chris Jericho featuring Private Party
  • TNT title qualifyting match: Dustin Rhodes vs. Jack Perry
  • Rush in action

The Elite defeat Team AEW at Double or Nothing Anarchy in the Arena match

Image: JJ Williams

In a wild brawl, The Elite defeated Team AEW in the Anarchy in the Arena headliner of Sunday’s AEW Double or Nothing.

The end came when Jack Perry hit a running knee strike on a bloodied Bryan Danielson, who had already been hit with a Kazuchika Okada Rainmaker and a Young Bucks’ EVP trigger, to get the pin and win.

Perry’s legs had been lit on fire earlier in the match by Allin’s flamethrower after Perry grabbed Tony Khan from the gorilla position and brought him out to the ramp.

The match started at just after midnight Eastern which is traditionally when AEW pay-per-views wrap up, lasting until 12:32 AM Eastern. The match featured a little bit of everything on a card that had already featured a barbed wire steel cage match in addition to an FTW rules match earlier on the show.

Some of the notable highlights and spots included:

  • Darby Allin, wearing a protective mask that also had tacks sticking out of it, hoisted up by a winch legs first, leaving him prone to a Bucks’ superkick to the face courtesy of their new Reebok Pumps with thumbtacks on the bottom. Allin remained upside down for minutes on end, leading to fans chanting “Please help Darby.”
  • Matthew Jackson hitting Dax Harwood with an exploding chair, followed by a superkick to Cash Wheeler. That led to a thumbtack-adorned sleeve put on by Okada who used it on Wheeler. Okada then pulled out a shoebox with the aforementioned Pumps with tacks on the bottom.
  • Danielson using one of the Pumps against both Bucks with Nicholas getting superkicked by Matthew accidentally, busting him open.
  • Allin and Perry brawling into the loading dock area earlier in the match where Allin dunked Perry in a tank full of water. As a play on Allin recently being hit by a bus, Perry later drove a small bus painted black with ‘Scapegoat’ on it through pallets and other junk with the announce team speculating he ran over Allin. The camera focused on the driver’s seat and that Perry had knocked himself out on the steering wheel.
  • After powerbombing Allin through a collection of chairs, the Bucks brought him up to their entrance and sent him down through the elevator-style hole they come up through.
  • Nicholas Jackson jumped off one of the entrances with a senton atomico through Wheeler who was on a table while Okada elbow-dropped Dax Harwood through a table off the stage.

Team AEW came out early during Perry’s intro to get things started. When Allin’s music began, the majority of the song played when Matthew Jackson requested they play their music instead. Danielson then requested they play the greatest song in the history of wrestling and Europe’s “The Final Countdown” began playing for several minutes until Jackson asked for it stop because it cost $200,000 every time it played. That led to fans to chant “we want music.”

This was the third Anarchy in the Arena match, dating back to 2022.

AEW Dynasty media scrum notes: Tony Khan on Jack Perry, streaming library

Tony Khan and other AEW stars spoke to the media following AEW Dynasty.

New AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland, new TBS Champion Willow Nightingale, AEW Women’s Champion Toni Storm, Will Ospreay, and Khan spoke following Sunday’s pay-per-view event. Here are the notes:

Swerve Strickland

  • The first thing Swerve said upon being introduced was “My champion is black.”
  • He said that he was offered opportunities for the International title but turned them down, saying he wanted to shoot at the top.
  • When asked what message would he want to send to little Black boys and girls who are watching. Swerve replied that he wanted to send the message that it’s possible, but it’s not easy. He had to take it.
  • He named Kofi Kingston winning the WWE Championship back at WrestleMania 35 as one of the most inspiring things in history. He said that was something that motivated him and something he wants to do for the next generation “multiple times.”
  • After he finished taking questions, Swerve introduced his shoes that will be coming out soon. He gifted them to Khan before leaving.

Willow Nightingale

  • When asked about Mercedes Mone, Willow said she would need to refocus, but just wants to celebrate the win for now and think about that and other title defenses before Double or Nothing.
  • She said that when she wrestled Mone last year, won the Owen Hart Cup tournament, and headlined an ROH show against Athena all at the same time, that is when she thought she could be on this level.

Toni Storm

  • Storm gave a statement, where at one point she said Nicole Garcia couldn’t hold a “p**** scented candle to her.”
  • She stormed off after someone asked a question regarding if she’d wrestle Mariah May, who is currently in the rankings.

Will Ospreay

  • Before Ospreay answered any questions, he started by apologizing by saying he didn’t see the doctor’s call before he laid out Danielson with the hidden blade for the win. He said he felt awful about what had happened. Moving forward, he will retire using the Storm Driver 91. Khan mentioned that he thought Danielson would be “okay” and that it was still a great match.
  • When asked about his recent jab against Triple H, he said that he’s done mentioning anyone from WWE because he’d just be lowering himself to that standard. He said it was the first time he’d experienced “true tribalism” over his remark. He doesn’t regret what he said, but he doesn’t want to go down that road moving forward.
  • After someone asked if he’d be going after the World title, he sidestepped the question by saying that he remembers seeing Swerve back when he was in CZW and put him over heavily.
  • One person asked about Ospreay paying for a ring for Softground Wrestling in Uganda. Ospreay said it reminded him of wrestling in his back garden. One of his dreams is to wrestle in Uganda.
  • Ospreay said the match he had tonight was probably the best one he’s ever done. He’s never felt more joy performing at that level.

Tony Khan

  • Thought Swerve stepped up another level with his recent matches against Hangman Page. He also mentioned the Casino Battle Royal back in 2022.
  • Regarding Jack Perry’s return, he said the return got a huge reaction. He also mentioned the response Perry got in Chicago last weekend. He called airing the footage “a bold call”, saying he felt that he had a responsibility to the home viewer to explain Jack Perry’s circumstances.
  • Someone asked if Mercedes Mone was cleared. Khan said that “she’ll be cleared at Double or Nothing.”
  • Regarding another pay-per-view in St. Louis, Khan said that the pay-per-view calendar is set for 2024, but would love to bring another event to the city.
  • One person asked if he would take all three of AEW’s shows to a streaming platform, he said it was “an interesting question.” They’re still in an exclusive negotiation window with Warner Bros. Discovery and Khan likes having wrestling on TBS and TNT. He hopes to have AEW’s library online in 2025, mentioning AEW and ROH libraries while also mentioning the possibility of bringing in other content like NJPW.
  • When asked about WBD’s morale, he said he heard positive things from them following Dynasty and got a text message from them right before he entered the press conference.
  • Regarding financial details for Dynasty, Khan said data is coming in from multiple sources, but is looking positive.
  • When asked about MJF, he would love to get MJF back sooner rather than later. Another person asked about Kenny Omega and Britt Baker. Khan said hopefully we’ll see them soon. He hoped to have Omega back for when they run Winnipeg, even if he isn’t cleared to return to the ring. For Baker, the sooner she’s back, the better.

Young Bucks win Tag Team titles at AEW Dynasty after Jack Perry interferes

For the third time, The Young Bucks are AEW Tag Team Champions thanks to interference from old friend Jack Perry at AEW Dynasty.

Matthew & Nicholas Jackson defeated FTR at Sunday’s pay-per-view in a ladder match for the vacant titles, aided by Perry’s surprise return. As Dax Harwood was up on the ladder and about to grab the belts, a man in a white mask and hood ran into the ring and pushed Harwood off the ladder.

Security swarmed him and commentary played it up like he was a fan, but they removed his mask to reveal Perry. Nicholas then was up on the ladder to grab the belts and win the titles. Perry was taken out by security afterward as the Bucks pretended to be surprised by everything.

The titles were vacated by Darby Allin & Sting following Sting’s retirement at March’s Revolution and put up in a tournament. FTR advanced with wins over The Infantry and Top Flight while the Bucks defeated Private Party and Best Friends (Orange Cassidy & Trent Beretta) to get to the finals.

It’s the third reign for the Bucks and their first since a 28-day reign in 2022. This was the fourth-ever meeting between both teams with each winning two of them.

Perry has been out of AEW since last August’s All In when he got into a backstage skirmish with CM Punk that AEW aired footage of several weeks ago. He just wrapped up a short run in NJPW where he adopted the “Scapegoat” moniker to help play off the Punk controversy.

Both teams did their best to follow the spectacular Bryan Danielson vs. Will Ospreay match that preceded them, pulling out all the stops and eventually getting the crowd back into things.

Some highlights:

Wheeler hit a running spear to Matthew on the ring apron who then slid on the table and broke it before his body then nailed the barricade, followed by Nicholas hurricanrana counter onto Harwood through a table at ringside.

Harwood and Wheeler hit a massive powerplex onto Nicholas off the ladders.

In a nasty looking bump, Nicholas hit a 450 splash onto Wheeler through a table while Harwood hit a piledriver onto Matt on top of a ladder, but the ladder broke making for an awkward fall.

Young Bucks say Jack Perry ‘needed something controversial’ to open people’s eyes

The Young Bucks believe Jack Perry is wrestling’s next breakout star.

Perry, who appears destined to return to AEW shortly, received a mixed but passionate reaction in Chicago for Windy City Riot on Friday. His match with Shota Umino took place two days after security footage of his altercation with CM Punk backstage at AEW All In aired on Dynamite.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Matthew and Nicholas Jackson said Perry has an “edge and swagger” to him now coming off his run in NJPW with House of Torture. They believe all the controversy involving what happened at All In has given him a chip on his shoulder.

“He’s been the next breakout star for a while now and he just needed something controversial to happen to him to open people’s eyes,” said Nick Jackson. “It happened with us early on in our careers, too.”

“Jack Perry was one of my original AEW hires,” said Matt Jackson. “I saw a video clip of him on the indies, and then I went and watched everything I could find. Years prior, I’d heard stories about a nine-year-old boy being brought to wrestling training in Southern California by his celebrity dad Luke Perry. I wondered, whatever happened to that kid? Apparently, he’d been working hard and turning into a heck of a talent. I watched the videos and thought, ‘Whoa. Young, handsome SoCal kid with a great head of hair. Seems misunderstood. Has tons of confidence. He reminds me a lot of me and Nicholas at his age.’

“Coming back from Japan, Jack Perry now has that edge and swagger. And coming off all of this BS he’s been dealing with, he has a chip on his shoulder. He’s a dangerous cat right now and is about to blow up.”

Regarding AEW’s decision to air the security footage from AEW All In, the Bucks say they have no regrets regarding their part in the segment. Matthew Jackson reiterated previous storyline comments made about the segment, saying it was important for them to tell the fans why they lost to FTR in Wembley that night.

“Since we are wrestling FTR at Dynasty, and with it being the first time doing that since All In London, so many feelings and thoughts came rushing back,” said Matt Jackson. “Old wounds were reopened. We decided it was only fair to be transparent and honest with our fans. We needed to give them context about why we feel we came up short at All In London. Our bodies were there in the ring wrestling FTR at Wembley, but our minds were in the back with the scapegoat in the entire situation, Jack Perry. The three of us specifically were wronged that night, and I haven’t gotten over that.”

“As EVPs, we were given a task for that week by the boss and we did it to the best of our abilities. Zero regret.”

Wrestling Observer Live: A new era for WWE

I am back with another Sunday edition of Wrestling Observer Live, discussing the latest news from the past week in professional wrestling.

I kick off by sharing my thoughts on Dave Meltzer’s star ratings from last weekend’s WWE WrestleMania 40, offering insights on night two and the potential directions emerging after the weekend’s events.

I then talk about Friday’s WWE SmackDown which kicked off the next chapter of The Bloodline storyline. Tama Tonga made his debut, attacking Jimmy Uso and aligning with Solo Sikoa, who now appears poised to become the new head of the table. I explore the implications and potential outcomes coming out of Friday.

Jon Moxley’s IWGP World Championship victory at Windy City Riot in Chicago is also covered. I discuss potential future opponents for Moxley, and highlight Jack Perry’s heat-inducing entrance in Chicago.

We also do an early look at next Sunday’s AEW Dynasty, Big E’s health update, Kenny Omega’s comments on Brawl Out, AEW’s decision to air the Perry/CM Punk pull-apart finish and more.

NJPW Windy City Riot notes: Jack Perry, Tony Khan, title changes

News and notes from Friday’s Windy City Riot event, which featured multiple title changes:

  • Jack Perry faced Shota Umino on Friday’s undercard, coming to the ring with a “Cry Me A River” jacket. Perry adopted many of CM Punk‘s mannerisms including his GTS taunt, and tried for a GTS in the match as the crowd chanted about Perry being choked out or not choked out by Punk. Umino defeated Perry, and the two shook hands after the match.
  • AEW’s Tony Khan attended the show and a fan snapped a photo of Khan chatting with Renee Paquette:

  • As covered here, Jon Moxley won the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, and Shota Umino & Ren Narita were set up as potential challengers.
  • Nic Nemeth defeated Tomohiro Ishii in the show’s semi-main in a match where Nemeth’s IWGP Global Championship was not on the line.
  • Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Matt Riddle to reclaim the NJPW World TV Championship, becoming the first two-time NJPW TV Champion.
  • Gabe Kidd‘s team defeated Eddie Kingston‘s squad in an eight-man tornado tag match. Kidd teamed with Bullet Club’s KENTA, Clark Connors & David Finlay, while Homicide, Jeff Cobb & TJP sided with Kingston. Kingston challenged Kidd to an NJPW Strong title bout for Resurgence on May 11 in a Last Man Standing match.
  • Mustafa Ali made his NJPW debut on the show, defeating former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi.
  • TMDK’s Mikey Nicholls & Shane Haste won the NJPW Strong Openweight Tag Team titles in a four-way that included the West Coast Wrecking Crew, Tom Lawlor & Fred Rosser, and El Phantasmo & Hikuleo. The WCWC attacked Lawlor & Rosser after the match.
  • Stephanie Vaquer retained the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship, defeating Stardom’s AZM.
  • Ren Narita defeated Minoru Suzuki in the main card opener, giving him a win before his involvement in the main event angle.
