Report: The Hardys meet with WWE officials in Cleveland

Update —

Fightful reports that Matt & Jeff Hardy were meeting with WWE “to film content and interviews for upcoming documentaries.”

**********

With both sides in Cleveland, The Hardy Boys reportedly had a meeting with WWE.

PWInsider reports that Matt & Jeff Hardy met with WWE officials in Cleveland on Friday morning, but there’s no word on what was discussed.

“We are told that The Hardys met with WWE very early this morning,” the report said. “No word on what was discussed, but we have also heard some content was filmed to be rolled out via WWE digital as well.”

Matt & Jeff Hardy are both currently free agents after departing AEW when their contracts with the promotion expired. When his deal came up in April, Matt stated that he was still talking with AEW and was speaking with WWE as well.

The Hardys are appearing at the Destination WrestleCon convention in Cleveland on Friday. Matt also has a match against Nick Gage for Game Changer Wrestling that’s taking place in the city tonight.

WWE SummerSlam is being held at Cleveland Browns Stadium this Saturday, though The Hardys are scheduled to be in Florida on Saturday for TNA Wrestling’s television tapings at the Florida State Fairgrounds.

Jeff Hardy still has ‘so much guilt and shame’ over personal issues ruining AEW opportunity

Jeff Hardy is looking to make things right after his personal issues impacted The Hardy Boyz’s run with AEW.

In June 2022, Hardy was arrested for DUI in Florida. Hardy — who has battled substance abuse issues throughout his life — submitted a plea of nolo contendere and did not receive jail time in his sentence. His license was suspended for 10 years.

The Hardys were supposed to win the AEW Tag Team titles in 2022, but it never happened due to Jeff’s arrest. They were with AEW until departing the company earlier this year. Now, the legendary duo is back teaming together in TNA Wrestling.

Jeff told Busted Open Radio today that his goal in TNA is to win the Tag Team titles. He still feels “so much guilt and shame” over breaking peoples’ trust in AEW and wants to make things up to his brother Matt.

“Definitely to win the TNA Tag Team titles,” Jeff said. “Basically because I have so much guilt and shame within me still, just from AEW giving me an opportunity — and even Matt — to me breaking trust with my personal issues in real life. And so, I just want to make that up to Matt. And I can say right here that I will not break TNA’s trust. That is in my past, and it feels good to have somewhat of a clean slate with all that stuff and kind of start fresh instead of having that guilt and shame about what I did in a certain world of pro wrestling.”

Jeff said sobriety, recovery, and staying on the straight and narrow are what’s important. Having the support of his family means everything to him.

“So many things have happened since my last run-in with the law that have been really beautiful,” he said. “It’s like an enlightenment connection I have with everything around me, mainly nature. The force of nature is a huge drive with my internal love.”

ABC (Ace Austin & Chris Bey) are the current TNA Tag Team Champions.

The Hardys to challenge for TNA Tag titles on next Impact

Matt Hardy & Jeff Hardy will challenge The System for the TNA Tag Team titles on the July 18 Impact.

The return of The Hardys and their imminent Tag title challenge was made official on this week’s Impact. It will be Matt & Jeff facing Eddie Edwards & Brian Myers with the Tag Team gold on the line on next week’s episode.

A trios match featuring WWE NXT’s No Quarter Catch Crew is also set for the July 18 Impact, as Charlie Dempsey, Myles Borne, and Tavion Heights of NQCC face Trey Miguel & Zachary Wentz of The Rascalz and a mystery partner.

Alisha Edwards vs. Xia Brookside in a Knockouts Division contest has also been announced for next week’s Impact.

The Thursday, July 18 TNA Impact is the go-home show for the Saturday, July 20 Slammiversary pay-per-view. The latest card for Slammiversary is here. Spoilers for next week’s Impact are available here.

The announced card for the Thursday, July 18 TNA Impact:

  • Alisha Edwards vs. Xia Brookside

AEW Rampage live results: The Hardys & Mark Briscoe in trios action

The Hardys & Mark Briscoe will team up in trios action on tonight’s AEW Rampage.

Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, & Briscoe will take on The Butcher, The Blade, & Kip Sabian in a six-man tag team match.

An ROH Pure Championship defense is also scheduled for the show, as Wheeler Yuta defends against Komander. Yuta defended his title on last week’s Rampage against Matt Sydal, but lost at Saturday’s Worlds End Zero Hour show in an FTW title match against Hook.

Two women’s division contests are also set for Rampage.

In singles competition, Hikaru Shida will take on Anna Jay.

In a tag team match, Kris Statlander & Willow Nightingale will face off against two enhancement talents. Nightingale handed Statlander her first loss in a singles match since May 2022 on last Saturday’s Worlds End Zero Hour pay-per-view pre-show.

Tonight’s episode was taped Wednesday, January 3 in Newark, New Jersey at the Prudential Center. Spoilers from the show are available here.

It’s AEW Rampage – Taped in Newark, New Jersey.

Ian Riccaboni, Tony Schiavone and Excalibur were on commentary.

Mark Briscoe & The Hardys (Matt Hardy & Jeff Hardy) defeated Kip Sabian, The Butcher & The Blade (11:14)

Riccaboni actually remembered that months ago, Sabian was running down Phiadelphia sports team on Rampage, and used that as backstory for this match.

Sabian was soon in trouble, suffering a double suplex from the Hardys. Sabian raked Jeff Hardy’s eyes and got the tag to the Blade. Tony Schiavone said the Hardys “haven’t lost a step,” which might be his biggest exaggeration since he described some of those 2000s Nitros as “the greatest night in the history of our sport.”

Matt Hardy hit a middle rope splash on the Butcher (that spot used to be a legdrop), but Butcher came back with a clothesline. Matt got worked over by the heel trio in their corner. Matt came back with an inverted neckbreaker and got the tag to Mark Briscoe, who hit some “redneck kung fu” on his opponents. Briscoe cleared the ring with a middle rope dropkick, then dove through the ropes to hit a dropkick on the Blade. Butcher caught Briscoe with kind of F-5 on the ring apron, and Sabian followed up with an Arabian press on Briscoe. Briscoe got triple teamed in the heel corner, and Butcher with an inverted backbreaker for a near fall.

The heels worked over Briscoe through the split-screen break. Briscoe exchanged “Boo! Yay!” punches (when the crowd boos the heel punches and cheers the babyface punches) with The Blade, then caught him with a neckbreaker. Jeff Hardy got the hot tag and Sabian bumped off some elbow for him. Jeff hit a middle rope splash for a near fall. The Hardys stacked Butcher and Blade in the corner, then Jeff whiffed on Poetry in Motion in the corner.

The heels got the advantage on Matt and held him open for a springboard dropkick, but Jeff broke that up and Sabian dropkicked his partners out of the ring instead. Sabian suffered a Twist of Fate from Matt, a Swanjob from Jeff and a Froggie Bow from Briscoe, and Mark Briscoe got the pinfall.

– Renee Paquette interviewed Sammy Guevara and Chris Jericho. Guevara cut a promo about his singles match with Ricky Starks on Dynamite Wednesday. Jericho warned Big Bill to stay away, or else he will gonna knock Bill’s teeth out “and Uncle Joe is gonna cry!”

Kris Statlander & Willow Nightingale defeated Notorious Mimi and Kenedi Hardcastle (2:33)

Stokley Hathaway did the ring introductions for this match. He put over Statlander huge, barely acknowledged Nightingale, and didn’t even know who Mimi and Hardcastle were.

Statlander and Nightingale took turns slamming Mimi, then Nightingale hit a senton. Hardcastle and Mimi actually got a bit of an advantage on Nightingale, until she reversed a double suplex. Stalander hit a double clothesline, power slammed Hardcastle and dropped Mimi onto Copeland. Nightingale got the pinfall after a spinebuster on Mimi.

– Renee Paquette interviewed the Hardy Boys. Jeff said they need to get on Dynamite “and bring up those ratings.” Private Party interrupted, and the Matt congratulated them for striking out on their own. Matt Hardy subtly credit for the newfound confidence of Private Party, then condescendingly gifted Private Party “ring worn Hardy Boys t-shirts.” This felt like the start of a heel turn for the Hardys.

Hikaru Shida defeated Anna Jay (7:56 aired)

There is a long-term story being told with Shida and Jay. They first wrestled on the early pandemic tapings from QT Marshall’s gym, Jay’s first match in the company. Each time Jay has wrestled Shida, she is getting closer to victory. In this match, Jay flat out dominated in the early goings and through a commercial break. After the break, Jay continued to dominate. Shida caught Jay with a lariat and the Falcon Arrow. But Jay countered the pin attempt into a cradle for a very close near fall (the crowd actually thought Jay won and kind of turned on Shida a bit). Jay went for the Queen Slayer, but Shida escaped and hit a sliding knee for a near fall. Shida came of the top with a meteora, and hit a spinning kick to get the pinfall. This was a great effort of Jay and a fantastic story. After the match, Shida was bleeding from the mouth.

– Apparently, Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal are no longer getting along. Sonjay Dutt tried to mediate the dispute, and this did not go well. Jarrett called Lethal a loser. Lethal said Jarrett wouldn’t win any matches without his help. Jarrett said he was a “12 time world champion.”  Bottom line, it looks like Jay Lethal is going babyface.

Wheeler Yuta vs. Komander (w/Alex Abrahantes) for the ROH Pure Championship

Jimmy Jacobs, Pat Buck and Christopher Daniels were the judges for this match.

This is the Pure Champion Yuta’s 3rd title defense. There is a running clock on the screen for the match, which they should be doing for every match to enhance the “sports based” presentation they’re going for.

Barely a minute into the match, Komander had to use a rope break to get out of an armbar. Komader came back with some clever matwork of his own, transitioning from a Lag Magistral cradle into a half crab. Yuta had to break the hold with his own first rope break. Komander sent Yuta to the floor with a rana. Komader went for a plancha, and Yuta cut him off on the dive with a fist that maybe caught Komader in the face (which is illegal under “Pure Rules”) .

After a split-screen break, Yuta is stretching Komader, who had to use one of his rope breaks during the break. Komader came back with a springboard dropkick, but was selling his injured left shoulder. Komader hit a spinning DDT but a weak cover only got him a near fall.

Komader went for a splash, but Yuta avoided it and caught Komader with an angle slam. Yuta got a hammerlock on Komader, and he had to use his third rope break. Komader caught Yuta with a cradle out of a rana for a near fall. Komader hit a back heel kick, but Yuta came back with a boot. A german suplex from Yuta got a near fall. Yuta went for the seatbelt, but Komader countered with a sunset flip for a near fall. Yuta rolled out and into the hammerlock again. Komader went to the ropes, but since Komader’s rope breaks were exhausted, Yuta did not have to release the hold. Unable to escape, Komader tapped out. Very good bout, and I liked that the “Pure Rules” played into the finish of the match.

Matt Hardy: ‘Very frustrating’ how AEW has utilized The Hardys recently

Matt Hardy is frustrated with how The Hardys have been presented in AEW as of late.

Hardy spoke about how he and his brother have been utilized in the company over the last four months during a recent episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy

“I feel like there is such a great spot for us at AEW if we’re just utilized in the correct way and we’ve just got to get there,” Hardy said on the show.

“There’s a huge fanbase that wants to see us and we’re beloved. Sure, we’re not Matt & Jeff Hardy of 1999 and 2000 but there is so much we can do to help young guys continue to come up and also give our rub-off to these young guys, but we just need to be utilized in the right way. And we hope we can get there, we feel like we’re taking steps in the correct direction now.”

Hardy continued to say that how they’ve been used over the last four months has been “very frustrating.”

“Creatively, just the way we’ve been utilized the last four months, it’s been very frustrating. We’ve been very patient but there has been a lot of frustration (with) things we’ve done, and kind of how we’ve been utilized in some ways.”

Hardy also expressed his belief that the brothers turning heel and adopting a more aggressive style could be something they do “to get back to where we want to be.”

The Hardys had been planned to win the AEW World Tag Team Championships last year. However, concerns over Jeff Hardy’s health led to the company changing plans.

Other wrestlers have also expressed frustration regarding how they’ve been used in AEW of late. Britt Baker posted to X on Wednesday that she has not received any live promo time in 2023.

Young Bucks vs. Hardys, MJF & Adam Cole appearance set for AEW Dynamite

The card for this Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite was rounded out Friday with the Young Bucks vs. Jeff & Matt Hardy as the featured new attraction.

In a backstage promo on Rampage, Matt & Nick Jackson said they were going to get back into the tag team division when they invited the Hardys to join them on-screen. Matt Hardy then suggested if they were getting back into the deep end, they should face them right from the start and the match was made.

The two teams have squared off several times throughout the years, but just once in AEW when the Hardys defeated the Bucks at 2022’s Double or Nothing.

In another tag team match, the Blackpool Combat Club’s Jon Moxley & Claudio Castagnoli will take on the Lucha Brothers following Moxley & Castagnoli’s victory over Best Friends Friday in their parking lot fight.

After their rematch for the AEW World title was made Wednesday for this month’s All In at London’s Wembley Stadium, champion MJF and Adam Cole will be on the show.

The additions join the previously announced FTW title match between champion Jack Perry and Rob Van Dam.

Here’s the current lineup:

  • The Hardys (Matt & Jeff Hardy) vs. The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson)
  • MJF & Adam Cole appearance
  • Blackpool Combat Club (Jon Moxley & Claudio Castagnoli) vs. Lucha Brothers (Penta El Zero Miedo & Rey Fenix)
  • FTW Champion Jack Perry defends against Rob Van Dam

The Hardys vs. The Gunns added to AEW Dynamite

Matt Hardy & Jeff Hardy vs. Austin Gunn & Colten Gunn has been added to the June 21 AEW Dynamite.

After The Gunns issued a challenge to The Hardys on this week’s Dynamite, The Hardys accepted the challenge on Friday’s Rampage and the match has been officially announced for next week.

Already set for Dynamite, AEW International Champion Orange Cassidy & Ring of Honor Pure Champion Katsuyori Shibata will face NJPW World TV Champion Zack Sabre Jr. & Daniel Garcia in another tag team bout.

TBS Champion Kris Statlander also laid out a challenge to Taya Valkyrie on Rampage for “next week,” but it was not made clear whether that match is set for Dynamite, Rampage, or Collision.

Wednesday’s Dynamite will take place at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, and is the final Dynamite before the Sunday, June 25 Forbidden Door pay-per-view.

The announced Dynamite lineup:

  • The Hardys vs. The Gunns
  • Orange Cassidy & Katsuyori Shibata vs. Zack Sabre Jr. & Daniel Garcia

TBS title rematch, trios match announced for AEW Double or Nothing

The TBS title will be on the line at next weekend’s AEW Double or Nothing as Jade Cargill defends against Taya Valkyrie in a rematch.

After Cargill defeated two indie wrestlers with ease on Friday’s Rampage, another came out to challenge but was held off by Valkyrie who returned after a storyline suspension. The two confronted each other with Valkyrie hitting Cargill with Road To Valhalla which is the same move as Cargill’s Jaded. Valkyrie then said she would see the champion at Double or Nothing.

Weeks after Valkyrie debuted for AEW and first confronted Cargill, the two squared off for the first time but Valkyrie was unable to use her finisher. Cargill picked up the victory, but the finish was done in a way to open things up for a rematch.

Cargill is the inaugural TBS Champion and has yet to taste defeat in her young career.

In another new match made Friday, Jeff & Matt Hardy will team with Brother Zay against Ethan Page and The Gunns. If the Hardy team wins, Hard gets control of Page’s contract. Page and the Gunns laid out the Hardys and Zay Friday.

The AEW International Championship blackjack battle royal began to take shape as QT Marshall revealed he has entered his group into the match.

The other new bout made after a big brawl Friday was Adam Cole vs. Chris Jericho in an unsanctioned match.

Here’s the updated card for next Sunday’s pay-per-view from Las Vegas, Nevada:

  • AEW World Champion MJF defends against Sammy Guevara, “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry and Darby Allin in a four-way
  • AEW Tag Team Champions FTR defend against Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal
  • AEW International Champion Orange Cassidy defends the title in a 21-man Blackjack battle royal

  • Chris Jericho vs. Adam Cole in an unsanctioned match
  • The Gunns (Colten and Austin) & Ethan Page vs. Jeff & Matt Hardy and Brother Zay with Page’s contractual status on the line

Matt Hardy opens up about Jeff Hardy’s AEW return: ‘He seems different’

On a new edition of the Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Matt Hardy opened up about his brother Jeff returning to AEW.

Jeff made his return to AEW television on Dynamite this Wednesday. It was Jeff’s first appearance since a June 2022 DUI arrest where he was driving at more than three times the legal limit. It was Jeff’s third DUI arrest since 2018.

Jeff was suspended without pay after the arrest, with AEW saying that he could only return “upon successfully completing treatment and maintaining his sobriety.”

Jeff’s DUI case was resolved this February without him having to serve any jail time. Due to him spending time in rehab, Jeff was given 38 days credit for time served. His license has also suspended for 10 years.

Matt Hardy said on his podcast that Jeff “seems different” after the work he’s done on himself during his 10 months away from AEW.

This is the most work I’ve ever seen him do on himself. And he had 10 months. He seems different. He seems different. And once again, I don’t want to sit here and vouch for him. I don’t want you to take my word for it. I don’t want you to take anyone else’s word for it. I want you to watch him and follow his actions. He’ll make you a believer, if that’s what you need. I am confident his actions, his conduct, and his behavior will make people a believer.

He’s made me a believer. I’ve got to see a lot of him and I’ve got to follow his journey and I know the work he has put in and I know how dedicated he has been to legitimately changing and trying to get his sh*t together once and for all. And all I can say is like I’m just so extraordinarily proud of him. He’s done great.

And [on Wednesday] everybody was so happy to see him. And he was like happy to be there. It was so adorable, right before we went out, he was so nervous and he was so worried because he hadn’t been in a ring at all. He actually came to my house on Monday night and got in my ring, ran the ropes a little bit, took a few bumps… It was a fun time, just catching up with him was.

Matt also spoke about the reaction Jeff received in his return:

He was worried how the people were going to react to him. Jeff is just one of the few individuals who just has ‘it’ and something that’s just so extremely special and people are connected to him in such an organic way. And when he came out and the people went nuts and they were cheering and chanting for him. They hit that, ‘Welcome back! Welcome back!’ It was great, man. A magical moment. Really glad we got to this point and I’m very excited to see where we go forward from here.

When his co-host Jon Alba said it will be up to Jeff to prove himself to the world, Matt agreed:

That’s correct. Obviously coming off his past, he has stuff to prove to people. Once again — I’m the ultimate optimist. My mentality doesn’t work for everybody, but I say, like hey, people change, give them a chance, especially if they’ve legitimately put the work in and tried. I do that with everybody. Either he’ll prove them wrong or he’ll prove you right. I have a very good feeling about this point Jeff’s at in his life right now.

In his return appearance, Jeff saved Matt Hardy, Isiah Kassidy, and Hook from a beatdown by The Firm. Matt said on the Extreme Life of Matt Hardy that, after recently undergoing eye surgery, Jeff got cleared for physical activity at the end of last week.

AEW has announced that we’ll hear from The Hardys on this Friday’s episode of Rampage.

Matt Hardy says Jeff Hardy is ‘so remorseful, so embarrassed’ over DUI arrest

Matt Hardy has addressed how his brother Jeff is doing following his recent arrest.

On an episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy released on Friday, Matt spoke about mental health and substance abuse issues. During the discussion, he also commented on some of the challenges his brother has faced.

“A lot of people know our history and I feel like some of Jeff’s issues probably come from our mother dying when he was so, so, so young. I know that was always an issue that he carried with him deeply.”

Matt continued to say that Jeff feels remorseful and embarrassed following his arrest on Monday.

“After speaking to Jeff the last couple of days, he is just so remorseful, so embarrassed. He, like, hates himself and I think that’s part of it too. He has to know, obviously, what he did was atrocious and terrible, terrible decision-making but then also he has to know that people love him. It’s very important and just like you said, at the end of the day, it all comes down to the individual. You have to keep yourself in check, you have to be on top of yourself, you are the only person that can really ensure you’re not going to go awry or go in a bad direction whether it’s because of mental issues or because of addiction issues.”

Matt also addressed his reaction to finding out Jeff had been arrested for DUI.

“When I first learned about Jeff’s situation, my heart sunk. Hugely overwhelming. You just have to stop and breathe.”

Matt will be performing for AAA at Triplemania Tijuana on Saturday. Jeff will not be on the show, however.

“I’ll be going to TripleMania in Tijuana for AAA, I’m pretty excited about that,” Matt said. “We’re going to have a mystery partner. We will probably announce the mystery partner, in all reality, but I’ll be teaming with someone else.”

“Jeff right now is focused on life which is much bigger than pro-wrestling. I will be there. I will be honoring my meet and greet session and I’m going to do everything in my ability to make everyone as happy as possible and give them the best fan experience that they can possibly have.”

“As far as what I’m doing going forward, I’m sure I will be doing something in some capacity on AEW. I’m going to change it up a little bit, tweak things a little bit, and try to make some magic happen.”

Jeff Hardy’s scheduled brain scan led to change in AEW Tag Team title plans

The Hardys had been set to win the AEW World Tag Team Championships before Jeff Hardy was scheduled for a brain scan.

Bryan Alvarez noted on the Bryan & Vinny & Jonathan Show that plans changed after concerns were raised about Jeff following the Hardys vs. Young Bucks match at Double or Nothing.

“The idea was the Hardys were going to win the tag titles in this ladder match, that was the plan for awhile,” Alvarez said. “Apparently, at the pay-per-view when the Hardys and the Bucks had their match, Jeff was not looking good. Apparently, they examined him afterwards and he was all beat up and he didn’t remember the match.”

“Remember when Jeff got pulled over and said he was on his way to a brain scan? He was on his way to a brain scan. So, his idea was to drink whatever he drank and then drive to his brain scan.”

“They had advertised the ladder match. He was never actually going to be in the ladder match. They were going to do the angle where he and Matt were going to be coming out for the ladder match, they were going to be jumped on the ramp and they were going to be carted off and they weren’t actually going to do the match. So, whether he had his DUI or not, Jeff was never going to do that ladder match. It was always going to be Jurassic Express vs. the Young Bucks for the tag team titles with the Young Bucks winning.”

“The Hardys were going to be in the ladder match but then after they scheduled him for the brain scan, he wasn’t going to be in the ladder match.”
