AEW Forbidden Door notes: Jay White’s opponent, Countdown show, Dynamite

During his weekly appearance on Busted Open Radio, AEW head Tony Khan said the Forbidden Door opponent for IWGP Champion Jay White will be revealed on tonight’s Dynamite.

Last week after attacking Hangman Page as Adam Cole gleefully looked on, White said he wouldn’t be defending the title against Page or Cole which then made Cole dismayed.

White recently defeated Okada for the title. Cole said in a promo last week that the former champion will not be on Sunday’s pay-per-view, but it’s unclear if that was storyline or not.

More matches, more NJPW talent tonight

Khan also said more matches will be announced for Sunday’s PPV on tonight’s Dynamite which will also feature more NJPW talent on AEW TV than fans have seen thus far.

Countdown show time & network

Khan said the countdown show for Sunday’s PPV will air at 11 PM Eastern following Friday’s Rampage and will feature the usual video packages to help better introduce fans to NJPW stars who they might not otherwise be familiar with.

Here’s the current card for Sunday:

  • Interim AEW World Championship match: Jon Moxley vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi
  • IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Jay White defends against an opponent TBD
  • AEW Women’s World Champion Thunder Rosa defends against Toni Storm
  • IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay defends against Orange Cassidy
  • Four-way match to crown the inaugural AEW All-Atlantic Champion: Miro vs. PAC vs. Tomohiro Ishii vs. either Malakai Black or Penta Oscuro
  • Winner-take-all match for the ROH Tag Team titles and IWGP Tag Team titles: FTR vs. The Great-O-Khan & Jeff Cobb vs. Roppongi Vice

AEW’s Tony Khan stopped Tanahashi vs. Moxley from happening ‘many times’

AEW head Tony Khan admitted that he put the kibosh on Jon Moxley vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi happening, not once but many times in the past.

During his weekly appearance on Busted Open Radio, Khan said there was backstory with how the match came to be, saying that in the past, “I would never allow it to happen.”

“They tried to do it so many times…I have always been there to stop it from happening. It’s such a huge match that we had to be involved if it was going to happen,” he said, joking he was like Vince McMahon at WWF Armageddon when McMahon drove out to the ring in a truck to prevent the six-way cage match from happening.

Khan said “it’s fate” that now is the right time and place for Moxley vs. Tanahashi to happen as it will be the main event for this month’s cross-promoted Forbidden Door pay-per-view with NJPW. The two will battle over the interim AEW World title.

Earlier this year, Moxley had challenged Tanahashi for May’s Capital Collision, saying he wanted the Japanese legend to stop ducking him.

The two will come face-to-face for the first time ever on Wednesday’s Dynamite.

Andrade, Lucha Bros not appearing at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door

Due to the partnership between NJPW and CMLL, AAA contracted wrestlers Andrade El Idolo, Penta Oscuro and Rey Fenix will not appear at this month’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view.

LuchaBlog first reported the news Monday, saying Andrade was booked at one point and then removed from the show. Bryan Alvarez noted that with Penta and Fenix, it’s been known they wouldn’t be able to work the show “for a long time.”

AAA and CMLL are rival promotions in Mexico. Luchablog insinuated on Twitter that it was CMLL who forced NJPW’s hand:

Earlier Monday, Andrade tweeted the following:

https://twitter.com/AndradeElIdolo/status/1536220228291645443

As of this writing, neither Fenix nor Penta have tweeted anything about the situation

LuchaBlog also noted that there are apparently issues between Andrade and AAA over a canceled booking that wasn’t communicated properly that cost him an opportunity (and money) to work somewhere else. Andrade deleted a tweet replying to Konnan who tweeted the following:

At this point, the issue won’t affect FTR who are the current AAA Tag Team Champions. The creative direction appears to be a three-way with Roppongi Vice and new IWGP Tag Team Champions Great-O-Khan and Jeff Cobb at the Sunday, June 26th PPV. The AAA titles haven’t been mentioned in the buildup.

Interim AEW World Championship match set for Forbidden Door

Jon Moxley’s opponent in the interim AEW World Championship match at Forbidden Door is set following today’s NJPW Dominion show.

Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated Hirooki Goto to advance in the eliminator tournament to crown an interim AEW World Champion at Dominion, and will now face Jon Moxley in Chicago on June 26 at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.

Tanahashi appeared on the June 1 AEW Dynamite and confronted CM Punk, seemingly setting up Punk vs. Tanahashi in an AEW World title match in Chicago. Punk then went on the shelf with an injury, and underwent surgery this past week.

An eliminator tournament was set, with Jon Moxley taking on a battle royal winner on the June 8 Dynamite, and Tanahashi facing Goto at Dominion. Moxley defeated battle royal winner Kyle O’Reilly, and now Tanahashi has defeated Goto to set the first official bout for Forbidden Door.

The first-ever AEW All-Atlantic Champion will also be crowned at Forbidden Door, with a four-way tournament final the only other match announced for the event.

AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door, Sunday, June 26 —

  • Interim AEW World Championship: Jon Moxley vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi
  • AEW All-Atlantic Championship tournament final
