JDC wrestles final match at TNA Genesis

JDC has wrestled his final match.

In a competitive match at Saturday’s Genesis pay-per-view event, Eddie Edwards defeated JDC in what ended up being an emotional back-and forth match. Although JDC kicked out of one Boston knee party, Edwards followed it up with the Die Hard driver and went to the corner for a second. JDC, seemingly accepting this was the end, instructed Edwards to follow through. Edwards connected with the knee then pinned JDC to end his final match.

After the bell rang, the rest of The System and other babyfaces on the roster came out to applaud JDC as he recovered in the ring. He made his exit and slapped hands with fans as he made it to the stage. He posed one final time on the entrance ramp before the segment ended.

JDC had announced his retirement back in November, saying his final match would take place at Genesis. The following month, he unsuccessfully challenged then-champion Frankie Kazarian at Final Resolution for the TNA Championship. When he came out for Saturday’s match, he wore Terry Funk-style tights as a tribute.

Despite his final match taking place, JDC is still scheduled for this coming Thursday’s episode of TNA on AMC, where he and the rest of the group will introduce a new member of The System.

Starting his career in 1999, JDC is best known for his run in WWE under the name Fandango. He and Tyler Breeze formed a successful tag team, holding the NXT Tag Team titles at one point. He also won season 4 of NXT under its reality show format.

WWE announces new movie theater partnership ahead of SummerSlam

WWE has entered into a new partnership that will make SummerSlam available to watch in some movie theaters.

It was announced via Deadline today that WWE is partnering with movie ticket company Fandango for a multi-event collaboration that starts with SummerSlam. Fans will be able to watch the PLE at select Regal Cinema theaters across the country, with both single-night and two-night bundle tickets available. The two-night bundle also includes an exclusive SummerSlam T-shirt.

“While Regal will be the official exhibitor for SummerSlam, additional exhibitors are expected to join for future WWE live events,” Deadline wrote.

SummerSlam is taking place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Saturday, August 2 and Sunday, August 3. It’s the first two-night SummerSlam in history. The show will stream live on Peacock in the United States and Netflix elsewhere.

Among the matches scheduled are John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes, Gunther vs. CM Punk, Tiffany Stratton vs. Jade Cargill, and a triple threat between Naomi, Rhea Ripley, and IYO SKY. Country music star Jelly Roll will make his in-ring debut on the card, teaming with Randy Orton against Logan Paul & Drew McIntyre.

“WWE is one of the most electrifying global entertainment brands, and its events deserve to be experienced on the big screen,” said Will McIntosh, the president of Fandango. “We’re thrilled to work with WWE and Regal Cinemas to bring the action-packed SummerSlam 2025 cinema presentation to fans nationwide.”

Back in 2022, WWE had a movie theater partnership with Fathom Events for that year’s WrestleMania. The promotion currently has a deal with Cosm to air PLEs in immersive reality at Cosm’s venues in Los Angeles and Dallas.

JDC appears on WWE NXT, set to challenge Lexis King next week

JDC has returned to WWE.

The TNA star made his return to NXT on Tuesday night, confronting Lexis King as he was talking about amending the Heritage Cup rules. Coming out to his old Fandango music, JDC scored a big reaction from the NXT audience.

Reintroducing himself, JDC explained he was representing TNA as part of The System and said he wanted to win some gold for the group, saying he talked to Ava and set up a trophy match for next week.

JDC was part of the WWE system starting in 2006 and later best became known as Fandango, who managed to get over due to his theme song. After a initial push, he was later known for teaming with Tyler Breeze, at one point holding the NXT Tag Team titles. He was cut from WWE in 2021 and joined TNA the following year.

During his promo on Tuesday, King bragged about his trophy win and declared that the European rounds rules for the title was done and moving forward, the belt would be a one fall, winner take all match.

Dirty Dango signs new deal with TNA Wrestling

Dirty Dango has re-signed with TNA Wrestling.

The 40-year-old returned to Impact/TNA for the first time since 2004 at Bound for Glory 2022 and signed a one-year deal with the company that January.

During an appearance on the Paltrocast With Darren Paltrowitz, Dango revealed he’s recently signed a new deal to remain in TNA.

“I signed a year deal in January of 2023, I think it was. So, about a year ago I signed a year deal and then I just signed another,” Dango said on the show.

The audio cuts out as Dango is revealing the length of the contract, but it sounds as though he’s agreed to another one-year deal.

“I kind of told myself I’d wrestle until 40 and then I was going to probably ease up a bit but like I tell everybody, it’s what I’ve done my whole life. I don’t know how to not be a wrestler,” he said.

“Just being around TNA has made me really fall back in love with wrestling,” he continued.

Dango is scheduled to wrestle PCO on Saturday’s TNA Hard to Kill pay-per-view.

July 5, 2021 Observer Newsletter: More WWE cuts, Del Wilkes passes away

WWE cut another 14 wrestlers this past week, with many who had been regulars on 205 Live, plus former main roster performers Tyler Breeze & Fandango, the Bollywood Boyz and Killian Dain, the husband of Nikki Cross.

It’s obvious that the names were not decided as recently as two weeks ago since on the 6/8 episode of NXT, Breeze & Fandango got a win over Imperium, and shot an angle where Breeze was buried underneath the Imperium flag, which appeared to be a way to revive that program.

Also on the list of cuts were 205 Live regulars Tony Nese, Ariya Daivari and August Gray, along with the tag team of Ever Rise, which had been getting TV time of late with NXT, Curt Stallion, who got a few week push on NXT and then was forgotten about and did some 205 Live dates, Arturo Ruas, a Brazilian amateur wrestler, Marina Shafir, who former high-level judoka who was part of the Ronda Rousey led Four Horsewomen, Tino Sabbatelli, a former legitimate NFL player noted for a great physique who would have been a major star had he come along in the 70s, and Killian Dain, the husband of Nikki Cross.

WWE releases 14 wrestlers: Fandango, Tyler Breeze, Tony Nese

Image: WWE

The rumored WWE releases coming Friday turned out to be accurate as the company continued their recent paredown of the roster, focusing on both NXT and 205 Live talents.

The final list as of Friday night: Fandango, Tyler Breeze, Tony Nese, Ariya Daivari, August Grey, Ever-Rise (Chase Parker and Matt Martel), Curt Stallion, the Bollywood Boyz (Sunil and Samir Singh), Arturo Ruas, Marina Shafir, Killian Dain, and Tino Sabbatelli.

The majority of the releases were first reported by Fightful or PWInsider.

The 39-year-old Fandango (Curtis Hussey) had been with the company since 2006 when he signed a developmental deal and started with Deep South Wrestling. Wrestling as Johnny Curtis, he won the fourth season of NXT with R-Truth as his mentor but was only up on the main roster for a short period of time.

He developed the Fandango character and was called up to the main roster in 2013, eventually forming Breezango with Tyler Breeze in 2016. They eventually found their way back to NXT in 2019 and won the Tag Team titles — his only gold in WWE over his 14-year run. He thanked Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon and Paul Levesque in a tweet.

  • Breeze had been in the system since 2010 and spent five years in FCW/NXT before being called up to the main roster, paired with Summer Rae in a feud with Dolph Ziggler. The 33-year-old had opened a Florida-based wrestling school with Shawn Spears in 2019.
  • The 35-year-old Nese started with WWE in 2016 as part of the cruiserweight division and held the Cruiserweight title in 2018-19. He was a 205 Live fixture with some NXT appearances sprinkled in. He did appear once on SmackDown in 2020, losing to Matt Riddle.
  • Similar to Nese, the 32-year-old Daivari was also a 205 Live and cruiserweight division fixture since starting in 2016. He never held a title during his five years. His brother, Shawn, was recently rehired in a producer role. He tweeted it was time to put sports entertainment behind him and get back to professional wrestling.
  • Parker and Martel (Jeff Parker and Matt Lee) signed in 2019. They had also been working in both NXT and 205 Live. After nearly two months off, they returned on this week’s NXT in a losing effort to Hit Row (Ashante Adonis and Top Dolla).
  • Grey (Anthony Greene) signed with WWE in August 2020 and also worked both 205 Live and NXT. In a bit of irony, he will be on Friday’s 205 Live in a match with Grayson Waller while the aforementioned Daivari will face Ikemen Jiro. Grey joked on Twitter that his match is now a loser-leaves-town affair.
  • Stallion was signed in October 2020 and also was featured on 205 Live. He had recently been cleared to return to action following a wrist injury.
  • The Singh brothers (Gurvinder Sihra and Harvinder Sihra) started in 2016 and were paired up with then-WWE Champion Jinder Mahal on the main roster in 2017. After nearly two years, they were back on 205 Live. They did each hold the 24/7 title in 2019.
  • A freestyle wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace, Ruas (Adrian Jaoude) signed in 2015 and was in NXT for nearly his entire run, save an appearance on Raw Underground last year. He has been on the sidelines with an injured bicep and hasn’t been in action since last November.
  • Shafir, a friend of Ronda Rousey and part of the Four Horsewomen group, signed in 2018 along with Jessamyn Duke. Similar to Ruas, she was in NXT for nearly the duration of her run but made her own Raw Underground appearance. She is married to current NXT roster member Roderick Strong.
  • Ther 36-year-old Dain (Damian Mackie) signed in 2016 and was part of the Sanity faction that started in NXT and eventually called up to the main roster. After the group was disbanded, he returned to NXT in 2019. He tweeted a lengthy thank you and “see you in 90 days.”
  • Sabbatelli (Sabatino Piscitelli) was the final name reported Friday, released in his second stint with WWE. Signed in 2014, he was best known for teaming with Riddick Moss in NXT. He was cut in April 2020, re-signed in October but didn’t actually wrestle after he returned. In the between time, he worked one match on AEW Dark.

Fandango returns in NXT tag team number one contender’s match

Fandango returned to the ring for the first time since December on tonight’s episode of NXT.

Tyler Breeze & Fandango defeated The Undisputed Era (Roderick Strong & Bobby Fish) and Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch in a triple threat match on tonight’s show to become the number one contenders to the NXT Tag Team titles. WWE hasn’t announced when Breezango will be getting their title shot.

Undisputed Era were distracted during the match by Dexter Lumis appearing in the crowd. Breezango got the win after Breeze hit the Beauty Shot on Fish and Fandango followed with a flying leg drop from the top rope.

After the match was over, NXT Tag Team Champions Imperium (Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner) came out to the ramp and had a staredown with Breezango. Indus Sher (Rinku & Saurav) and their manager Malcolm Bivens then also came out to the stage and joined the staredown.

Beth Phoenix said on commentary that Fandango opted for physical therapy instead of surgery to heal the UCL injury he suffered in his left elbow. The injury happened when Breezango faced The Singh Brothers on the December 11 episode of NXT. Fandango had indicated at the time that he would need to undergo Tommy John surgery.

F4W NEWSLETTER: Recapping WWE TLC 2019 Joseph Currier gives his thoughts on WWE’s final PPV of the decade.

WWE’s final pay-per-view of the decade took place on Sunday night and exemplified some of the changes we’ve seen over the past 10 years.

TLC 2019 was very much a B-level PPV in the WWE Network era. Not only were the top men’s and women’s singles titles from each brand not defended, there were no singles titles on the line at all. Seth Rollins vs. Kevin Owens and AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton seemed like they were being built up as non-title matches that would help anchor the card, but they didn’t end up getting added. The show even ended with an angle instead of a match. After Asuka & Kairi Sane’s tables, ladders, and chairs match against Becky Lynch & Charlotte Flair, a locker room brawl that featured Roman Reigns and Baron Corbin continued. The image that closed the show was Reigns spearing Corbin from an elevated area onto a pile of bodies. It felt like the ending of an episode of Raw or SmackDown instead of a major event.

It’s kind of funny especially at the end. It’s the second time that Bad Bunny features a pro-wrestler in a video as he did one with Ric Flair a few years ago. He grew up in the 90’s watching RAW and is a big fan of WWE and had made various references to pro-wrestlers in his songs. (thanks to Leonardo Mendez Toledo)

Fandango, Goldust both undergo successful surgery

Two WWE wrestlers underwent surgery in Birmingham, Alabama yesterday.

Fandango had a left labrum tear in his shoulder repaired, while Goldust had surgery on both of his knees. WWE.com posted articles on each of their surgeries and noted that they were successful.

Fandango estimated that he’d be out of action for “6-?” months before having his operation. He wrote overnight: “Surgery went well Very overwhelming to get so many nice tweets/texts/calls. This surgery will be a thing of the past. The [love] is forever ….”

WWE said that Goldust is expected to make a full recovery but didn’t reveal further details on the type of surgery he had or when he’ll be able to return. He also tweeted last night: “Hey everybody, letting you know that both my knee surgeries went well. Ready to ride up outta here.”

Though he appeared on the May 7 episode of Raw, Goldust hasn’t wrestled on television since April. He was wrestling at house shows up until mid-June.

Fandango to undergo surgery for torn labrum

Fandango is expected to be out of action for an extended period of time due to a shoulder injury.

WWE announced today that Fandango will require surgery for a left labrum tear in his shoulder. The surgery is scheduled to take place this coming Tuesday.

Fandango tweeted this morning: “Seeya guys in 6-? Months.” He then thanked everyone for the love they’ve sent him.

WWE didn’t indicate when Fandango suffered the injury or how long he’s been dealing with it. His most recent appearance on television was on the episode of Main Event that was taped on June 25, where he teamed with Tyler Breeze & Bobby Roode to defeat Curt Hawkins & The Ascension.

After previously being on SmackDown, Breezango (Fandango & Breeze) moved over to the Raw roster in the Superstar Shakeup this April. Since then, they’ve been used as depth in the show’s tag team division.

Breeze also tweeted today: “Well, damn.”

WWE Main Event results: Breezango vs. The Revival

The Big Takeaway: Gran Metalik & Lince Dorado dispensed with Jack Gallagher & Brian Kendrick in a fun cruiserweight tag team opener and Breezango made their Main Event return to score a surprise victory over The Revival.

**********

Gran Metalik & Lince Dorado (w/ Kalisto) defeated Jack Gallagher & Brian Kendrick (4:56)

The Canadian crowd enjoyed this one, as they went 100 mph from the get-go. Kalisto played cheerleader on the outside throughout, but it felt like a waste as they could have gone for a six-man here and gone all out.

Dorado, who looks in great shape these days, was the star of the show both selling and moving like an elite performer. After dominating in the first half, he played babyface in peril until Metalik could grab the hot tag.

Dorado hit a back-handspring into a double stunner on both Gallagher and Kendrick, then Metalik launched Dorado into a hugely impressive senton over the top rope onto Kendrick on the outside. Dorado then landed his top rope elbow drop on Gallagher for the win.

Breezango defeated The Revival (6:04)

Tyler Breeze and Fandango came out as total babyfaces here and garnered a really good reaction from the crowd throughout. This was their first match on Main Event since November of 2016. The commentary trio strongly put over The Revival before this one, too, with Nigel McGuinness talking about them as being “tag team excellence” in WWE.

The result, therefore, came as quite a surprise given The Revival’s dominant streak of wins lately on Main Event. They cut the ring in half, using a ton of cheap shots and double teams to control the match. Much like the opener, they built this around the hot tag, with Breeze bringing in Fandango.

The finish saw Fandango help Breeze out of a double-team suplex by The Revival and hit a dropkick on Dash Wilder. Breeze then ducked a clothesline attempt by Scott Dawson and hit the Unprettier on him for the victory. There was almost a tangible sense of surprise on commentary when they scored the win.

The Usos vs. Breezango set for WWE Backlash

Another title match has been added to the card for SmackDown’s Backlash pay-per-view.

Tyler Breeze & Fandango will get a tag title shot as they face The Usos at the PPV. That was announced on Tuesday night’s SmackDown, with Breezango winning a Beat the Clock challenge to become the new number one contenders.

Other teams involved were The Ascension, American Alpha, and The Colons. American Alpha beat The Colons in 5:17 before Breezango went over The Ascension in 2:41.

The Usos vs. Breezango is the third title match set for Backlash. Randy Orton will defend his WWE Championship against Jinder Mahal on the show, and AJ Styles will challenge for the United States title. Backlash is scheduled for May 21st in Chicago.

There was also an angle on this week’s SmackDown that concerned the brand’s June PPV. A video was shown where Rusev said that he wouldn’t come to SmackDown unless he got a championship match at Money in the Bank. Rusev underwent shoulder surgery in March but could be back in time for that show.
