Sasha Banks cleared to return for WWE Elimination Chamber

Sasha Banks has been cleared to return to in-ring action after being out following the Royal Rumble.

Dave Meltzer reported on last night’s Wrestling Observer Radio (which you can see a clip of below) that Banks was cleared to compete at WWE Elimination Chamber on Tuesday. She was given partial clearance on Monday, which allowed her to do the barricade spot.

Banks last wrestled at the Royal Rumble, where she lost to Ronda Rousey in a Raw women’s title match. After not wrestling the following day, Bayley and Sasha Banks defeated Nikki Cross and Alicia Fox in a qualifying match to enter the Elimination Chamber on last week’s edition of Raw. Cross and Fox jumped Banks before the match, keeping her out of the bout entirely.

On Raw this week, Banks and Bayley competed against the teams of Nia Jax & Tamina and Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan. Banks was given a partial clear to be thrown into the barricade, which again kept her out of most of the match.

WWE.com has since ran a story saying that Banks has re-aggravated a shoulder injury, which is likely to play into the match on Sunday.

Kofi Kingston replacing Mustafa Ali at WWE Elimination Chamber

Mustafa Ali is officially out of Sunday’s Elimination Chamber match for the WWE Championship.

Due to a concussion, it was confirmed on tonight’s SmackDown that Ali won’t be wrestling at Sunday’s pay-per-view. Kofi Kingston is taking his place in the Elimination Chamber match for the WWE title, with Daniel Bryan defending against Kingston, AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Samoa Joe, and Jeff Hardy.

Ali worked house shows over the weekend but missed Monday’s event. On SmackDown, the storyline explanation was that Ali isn’t cleared for Elimination Chamber due to injuries that have accumulated.

Video of a promo from Ali aired tonight. Ali said there’s nothing more frustrating than your body giving out before your heart does. He mentioned that wrestlers keep trying to put him down, but he won’t stay down.

It was announced that a New Day member would be replacing Ali, and that was confirmed to be Kingston as tonight’s gauntlet match between the Elimination Chamber participants began. Kingston started the gauntlet with Bryan. The match lasted for the final hour of SmackDown, with Kingston defeating Bryan, Hardy, and Joe before losing to Styles.

Orton ambushed Styles and hit an RKO to win the gauntlet match. Orton will enter the Elimination Chamber last on Sunday.

WWE Elimination Chamber notes: Orton gets advantage, Deville & Rose start

The first two teams to enter the Women’s tag team title Elimination Chamber match has been determined, while we also now know who will enter the WWE title Elimination Chamber match last.

Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose lost tonight to Carmella & Naomi and the Iiconics in a three way match where the team that was pinned would start their Elimination Chamber match on Sunday. Naomi pinned Rose with a split legged moonsault off the top rope. They will start the match against Bayley & Sasha Banks, who lost a similar match on Raw against Tamina & Nia Jax and the Riott Squad.

Randy Orton meanwhile will enter the Elimination Chamber for the WWE title last. A gauntlet match was held for much of SmackDown’s second hour, with Kofi Kingston (entering the match after Mustafa Ali was pulled due to injury) outlasting four other men for nearly the entire duration of the match before tapping out to AJ Styles’ calf crusher. As Styles was anticipating Orton to enter the arena through the entrance, Orton instead snuck up from behind and planted Styles with the RKO, pinning him to win the match.

The Elimination Chamber PPV will be held this Sunday at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Gauntlet match for Chamber advantage set for WWE SmackDown

For the second straight year, there will be a gauntlet match on WWE television on the go-home week for Elimination Chamber.

WWE has announced that WWE Champion Daniel Bryan, AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Mustafa Ali, Samoa Joe, and Jeff Hardy will face off in a gauntlet match on Tuesday’s episode of SmackDown. Those are the six wrestlers who will be in next Sunday’s Elimination Chamber match for the WWE title.

The winner of the gauntlet match will enter the Elimination Chamber last during their match at the pay-per-view.

There was also a gauntlet match with Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, John Cena, Elias, Finn Balor, The Miz, and Braun Strowman on Raw’s go-home show for Elimination Chamber last year. Strowman won it, and Rollins defeated Reigns and Cena and was in the gauntlet for more than an hour.

The Usos will appear on “McMiz TV” with Shane McMahon and The Miz on Tuesday’s SmackDown, which is taking place at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio. Shane & Miz defending their SmackDown Tag Team titles against The Usos has been announced for Elimination Chamber.

Ronda Rousey vs. Ruby Riott official for WWE Elimination Chamber

Ronda Rousey’s next title defense will officially be against Ruby Riott.

WWE has announced that Rousey will defend her Raw Women’s Championship against Riott at this month’s Elimination Chamber pay-per-view. The event is taking place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas on February 17.

Rousey vs. Riott was set up for Elimination Chamber on this week’s episode of Raw. Rousey defeated Riott Squad members Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan in back-to-back singles matches. Riott got on the apron after the second match, but she backed off and went backstage with Morgan and Logan.

Riott then did an interview saying she didn’t run away from Rousey — Morgan and Logan needed her. Riott said that when she defeats Rousey, the Raw Women’s title will be on the line.

Morgan & Logan will be one of the six teams in the Women’s Tag Team Championship Elimination Chamber match at the PPV.

Here’s the updated Elimination Chamber card:

  • WWE Champion Daniel Bryan defending against AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Jeff Hardy, Mustafa Ali, and Samoa Joe in an Elimination Chamber match
  • Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey defending against Ruby Riott
  • Nia Jax & Tamina vs. Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan vs. Sasha Banks & Bayley vs. Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville vs. Peyton Royce & Billie Kay vs. Naomi & Carmella in an Elimination Chamber match for the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles
  • SmackDown Tag Team Champions Shane McMahon & The Miz defending against The Usos
  • Cruiserweight Champion Buddy Murphy defending against Akira Tozawa

Cruiserweight title match added to WWE Elimination Chamber

The Cruiserweight Championship will be on the line at this month’s Elimination Chamber pay-per-view.

Akira Tozawa defeated Cedric Alexander, Humberto Carrillo, and Lio Rush in a number one contender’s fatal four-way elimination match in the main event of Tuesday’s episode of 205 Live. Tozawa will challenge for Buddy Murphy’s Cruiserweight Championship at Elimination Chamber.

Tozawa last eliminated Alexander to win the number one contender’s match. Murphy then cut a promo on the video screen where he said Tozawa was on his path to going on to WrestleMania and cementing his legacy as the greatest cruiserweight of all time.

Murphy retained the title against Hideo Itami, Kalisto, and Tozawa in a fatal four-way match on last month’s Royal Rumble pre-show.

Elimination Chamber is taking place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas on February 17. Here’s the updated card for the PPV:

  • WWE Champion Daniel Bryan defending against AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Jeff Hardy, Mustafa Ali, and Samoa Joe in an Elimination Chamber match
  • Nia Jax & Tamina vs. Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan vs. Sasha Banks & Bayley vs. Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville vs. Peyton Royce & Billie Kay vs. Naomi & Carmella in an Elimination Chamber match for the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles
  • SmackDown Tag Team Champions Shane McMahon & The Miz defending against The Usos
  • Cruiserweight Champion Buddy Murphy defending against Akira Tozawa

Naomi & Carmella round out lineup for WWE Women’s tag title match

All six teams have now been confirmed for WWE’s Women’s Tag Team Championship Elimination Chamber match.

WWE posted a video tonight announcing that Naomi & Carmella have been added to the tag title match. Elimination Chamber 2019 is taking place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas on February 17.

All of Raw’s teams had Elimination Chamber qualifiers, while SmackDown’s were announced for the match. Nia Jax & Tamina, Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan, and Sasha Banks & Bayley are Raw’s teams. Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville, Peyton Royce & Billie Kay, and Naomi & Carmella are SmackDown’s teams.

Jax & Tamina qualified by defeating Alexa Bliss & Mickie James, Morgan & Logan defeated Natalya & Dana Brooke, and Banks & Bayley defeated Alicia Fox & Nikki Cross.

The Women’s Tag Team title match is one of two Elimination Chamber matches that have been announced for this month’s pay-per-view. Daniel Bryan will also defend his WWE Championship against AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Jeff Hardy, Mustafa Ali, and Samoa Joe inside the Chamber.

Sasha Banks & Bayley qualify for Women’s tag title Elimination Chamber

Bayley and Sasha Banks are the fifth team to qualify for the Women’s tag team title Elimination Chamber.

Banks and Bayley defeated the team of Nikki Cross and Alicia Fox after Bayley rolled up Fox for the win. The two were put at a disadvantage before the match started when Cross and Fox jumped them as they were making their way to the ring. The heels worked over Bayley most of the match, with Banks never tagging in.

It was reported this weekend that Banks had not been cleared by WWE to compete after suffering an injury at the Royal Rumble, but was expected to be cleared tonight prior to Raw.

Two other Raw teams, Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan of the Riott Squad and Tamina & Nia Jax qualified by winning matches last week. The IIconics and the team of Sonya Deville & Mandy Rose on SmackDown didn’t win any matches to qualify, but were also announced as part of the match.

Elimination Chamber will take place on February 17, 2019 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

The IIconics added to WWE Women’s Tag Team title match

Four teams have now been announced for the Women’s Tag Team Championship Elimination Chamber match that’s taking place at this month’s pay-per-view.

WWE revealed via Twitter on Saturday night that The IIconics (Peyton Royce & Billie Kay) will be one of the six teams in the Elimination Chamber match to decide WWE’s Women’s Tag Team Champions. They join Nia Jax & Tamina, Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan, and Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville as teams that have been announced for the match.

There will be three teams from Raw and three teams from SmackDown in the Elimination Chamber match. Raw’s final team for it will be confirmed when Sasha Banks & Bayley face Alicia Fox & Nikki Cross in a qualifier this Monday night.

Jax & Tamina defeated Alexa Bliss & Mickie James and Morgan & Logan defeated Natalya & Dana Brooke in their qualifying matches. WWE has announced SmackDown’s Rose & Deville and Royce & Kay for the Tag Team title match instead of having them win qualifiers.

The Toyota Center in Houston, Texas will host Elimination Chamber 2019 on February 17.

Bryan introduces sustainable title belt, Elimination Chamber match set

A second Elimination Chamber match has been added to next month’s pay-per-view.

This week’s SmackDown closed with the announcement that Daniel Bryan will defend his WWE Championship against AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Samoa Joe, Jeff Hardy, and Mustafa Ali inside the Elimination Chamber next month. Elimination Chamber 2019 is taking place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas on February 17.

Bryan threw his old WWE Championship belt in the garbage and introduced a new sustainable title belt in the main event angle of tonight’s SmackDown. He was interrupted by Styles, then Orton, Joe, Hardy, and Ali all came out. Triple H appeared on the video screen and announced the Elimination Chamber match.

Bryan said his new title belt is made from “100 percent sustainable, organic hemp” and carved from a naturally-fallen oak tree.

Bryan retained his title by defeating Styles at Sunday’s Royal Rumble PPV. Bryan aligned with the returning Rowan, with Rowan interfering at the end of the match after a ref bump. Rowan brought Bryan’s new title belt to the ring on SmackDown, and Bryan referred to Rowan as his “intellectual peer” during his promo.

There will also be an Elimination Chamber match to crown WWE’s Women’s Tag Team Champions at next month’s PPV. Nia Jax & Tamina, Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan, and Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville have been confirmed for it thus far. There are three teams left to be added.

Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville added to Women’s Tag Team title match

The first SmackDown team have entered themselves into the Elimination Chamber match that will crown the first WWE Women’s tag team champions.

On tonight’s episode, Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville were being interviewed when they declared themselves as a part of the Elimination Chamber, promising that they would become the first champions. This was starkly different compared to last night’s Raw where teams faced off against one another to get the opportunity to enter the Chamber.

Those matches on Raw had Nia Jax and Tamina defeat Alexa Bliss and Mickie James, while Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan defeated the makeshift team of Natalya and Dana Brooke. The third Raw spot will be decided next week when Bayley and Sasha Banks team up to take on the team of Alicia Fox and Nikki Cross.

These will be the first women’s tag team titles in the company since 1989, when the previous titles were abandoned.

Elimination Chamber qualifying match set for next week’s Raw

Raw’s final team for the Women’s Tag Team Championship Elimination Chamber match will be confirmed next week.

WWE has announced that Sasha Banks & Bayley will face Alicia Fox & Nikki Cross in an Elimination Chamber qualifying match on next Monday’s Raw. The winners will join Nia Jax & Tamina and Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan in the Elimination Chamber match to decide WWE’s Women’s Tag Team Champions.

There will be three teams from Raw and three teams from SmackDown in the Women’s Tag Team title match. Jax & Tamina and Morgan & Logan won qualifying matches on tonight’s Raw, with Jax & Tamina defeating Alexa Bliss & Mickie James and Morgan & Logan defeating Natalya & Dana Brooke.

Bayley answered an open challenge that was issued by Ronda Rousey tonight, with Rousey retaining her Raw Women’s Championship by submitting Bayley with an armbar. Becky Lynch then made an appearance and announced that she’ll be challenging for Rousey’s Raw Women’s Championship at WrestleMania 35.

The Toyota Center in Houston, Texas will host Elimination Chamber 2019 on February 17.

Elimination Chamber qualifiers, two more matches set for WWE Raw

WWE has made a few announcements for tonight’s post-Royal Rumble edition of Raw.

With the build to Elimination Chamber getting underway, WWE has announced that the Women’s Tag Team title Elimination Chamber qualifying matches will begin on tonight’s Raw. WWE didn’t reveal which teams will be wrestling in them.

There will be an Elimination Chamber match at the February 17 pay-per-view in Houston, Texas to crown the Women’s Tag Team Champions. It will include three teams from Raw and three teams from SmackDown.

Two other matches have also been announced for tonight’s Raw. Kurt Angle will be in action on the episode as he faces Baron Corbin. They also had a match at WWE’s house show in San Antonio on January 18, with Angle making a surprise appearance and losing to Corbin.

Angle was a surprise entrant in Sunday’s men’s Royal Rumble match.

Braun Strowman vs. Drew McIntyre is also set for tonight. The show is taking place at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.

Women’s tag champs to be decided at WWE Elimination Chamber

The first WWE Women’s tag team champions of the modern era will be decided inside the Elimination Chamber next month.

The announcement was made during Alexa Bliss’ talk show segment, A Moment of Bliss, tonight on Raw. Three Raw teams and three SmackDown teams will compete inside the Elimination Chamber, with the winners becoming the first champions.

The championships have been mentioned on and off for the last couple of months on WWE television. Sasha Banks and Bayley brought up the idea of the titles during an open forum that was hosted by Alexa Bliss. On the Christmas Eve edition of Raw, Vince McMahon said that the titles would be coming in 2019.

While these aren’t the first set of women’s tag team titles in the WWE, they would be the first in almost 30 years. The first champions, Velvet McIntyre and Princess Victoria, carried the NWA Women’s tag team titles over to the WWE in 1983. The titles would be more famously traded between the Jumping Bomb Angels and the Glamour Girls before they were deactivated in early 1989.

Elimination Chamber will take place on February 17, 2019 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

March 5, 2018 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Elimination Chamber review, Jon Jones hearing, more

There were some interesting twists and turns this past week when it came to the build for this year’s WrestleMania.

The Elimination Chamber show went as expected, with Roman Reigns winning the men’s chamber match, Braun Strowman being protected in the match as much as possible, and Alexa Bliss winning the women’s chamber match to retain her Raw championship.

The show itself was average. There was nothing overtly bad, but on paper going in, really only the men’s chamber match looked like it woUld be a strong match. It was good, but not as good as would be expected given the talent. The women’s match told a story, but dragged a lot and the undercard largely felt like filler.

The only real known change in the WrestleMania card is the original Miz vs. Strowman IC title match is out. Strowman’s role isn’t determined because right now he is the fallback position in case something happens with either Reigns or Brock Lesnar.
