Drew McIntyre drops update on WWE SmackDown status

Drew McIntyre has shared a message addressing his frustrations ahead of tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown.

A matchup between McIntyre and Fatu is set to take place on SmackDown this Friday night. In a social media promo, McIntyre expressed his discontent over not walking into WrestleMania 42 as Undisputed WWE Champion. He voiced disappointment for his family, including his nephew who will attend the event without seeing McIntyre walk down the aisle as champion.

“Came for a check-in. Been a rough few weeks, right? Yeah. Same old story for Drew McIntyre,” he said. “Difference this time is that so many people are opening their eyes to the truth that I’ve been preaching and realizing it’s not whining, it’s not complaining. It’s just been fact this whole time. I don’t care how many of you are trying to jump on the bandwagon. It doesn’t make me champion, does it? I’m not gonna shy away from the fact that I should be walking into Mania as champion either. Family are all coming to America. Nephew, should be seeing his uncle walk down that aisle as champion but he’s not. I’m not gonna focus on how it all went down. I’ve done this dance so many times. I gotta keep fighting, I gotta keep pushing forward. But this time, I’m doing it my way.”

McIntyre then shifted focus to Fatu. He praised Fatu’s athleticism in the ring while mocking his past physique. McIntyre then dove deeper into his own WWE tenure where he was once on the same roster with the likes of Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, and Umaga.

“There’s a bunch of stuff I’ve got to focus on, but right now let’s just focus specifically on Jacob. You cannot move around WWE without bumping into a nepo baby or a fraud — Jacob happens to be both. I’ll say this about him, he’s an animal. Freakishly athletic for a guy that used to resemble a bumblebee and move like one. But [he’s] a pretty jacked bumblebee these days, I’ll give him that. He’s quick and he’s strong, he’s legitimately a bad man. He’s a man in a world full of boys. This used to be a man’s business. And as a bad man, I like that. But I’m quicker, I’m stronger, I’ve got the experience fighting the best this industry has to offer for a long time, hell I was in the same roster as Triple H at one point and Shawn Michaels. And that same day when I was looking around at those two, I went ‘My God, there’s Ric Flair in the corner.’

“I was in the ring with one of the best members of The Bloodline. I didn’t need anyone to fight my battles. I fought Umaga in WWE. That’s how long I’ve been around and yet I’m still one of the youngest grizzled young veterans. This point I should be way more grizzled [with] all the crap I’ve been through. But I am the original athletic freak in this game.”

Lastly, McIntyre said that he was not intimidated by Fatu’s criminal past and prison time. McIntyre proceeded to confirm his appearance for SmackDown despite claiming last week that he was “quitting” the show.

“Just cause you did time Jacob, means nothing to me. Nobody knows my whole story, they don’t know anything about me. They know what I put out there. Everyone says they’re a gangster until the real gangster walks in the room, right?”

“What does my future hold? I really don’t know. I really don’t know at this point. But what I do know is I’ll see you this Friday on SmackDown, Jacob.”

The road to WrestleMania 42 saw McIntyre drop the Undisputed WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes after Fatu got involved in the match. Rhodes will now defend the title against Randy Orton at Mania.

Though McIntyre and Fatu are facing off on SmackDown tonight, it’s expected that their rivalry will continue into WrestleMania.

WWE Hall of Famer voices support for Drew McIntyre after title loss

WWE Hall of Famer Booker T has offered some words of encouragement for Drew McIntyre after his recent title loss.

Speaking on his Hall of Fame Podcast, Booker T sympathized with McIntyre after suddenly dropping the WWE Championship to Cody Rhodes on the road to WrestleMania. Booker T said McIntyre has always been one of his favorites — and he believes McIntyre was a hell of a champion for WWE.

“Drew McIntyre was always in my fav five. Always. I think he had a residency in my fav five. I definitely feel for him right now,” Booker T said. “Just because I feel like no matter what role you give Drew McIntyre, he’s gonna take it and he’s gonna knock it out of the park, and I thought he was a hell of a champion.

“It’s gotta be tough. I wouldn’t wanna be in that position. No one does. But that’s the business, that’s just part of the business. Play the cards that you’re dealt.”

Booker T is also of the belief that the situation will improve for McIntyre despite the unfortunate timing of the incident.

“I’m sure the time is gonna come back around for Drew McIntyre. If not, I’m not gonna worry about Drew McIntyre or anything like that, because he can do whatever he wants in this business,” Booker T said.

“I’m sure it’s disappointing to him to have to drop that strap so close to WrestleMania, because that’s every wrestler’s ultimate dream, I would imagine – walking out (at) WrestleMania as champion, or walking into WrestleMania the challenger, and you win the championship. I’m sure he’s feeling it.”

Rhodes dethroned McIntyre on the March 6 episode of SmackDown, immediately altering the landscape for WrestleMania 42. Rhodes will now defend the WWE Championship against a longtime ally, Randy Orton, who is looking to win his 15th World title.

As for McIntyre, his WrestleMania plans have yet to be announced, though a match against Jacob Fatu would make sense given their ongoing feud.

Drew McIntyre reveals details on canceled John Cena match

Drew McIntyre vs. John Cena sounds like a WWE dream match, and though it was scheduled to take place last year, it never happened.

McIntyre discussed the missed opportunity with Shakiel Mahjouri of SHAK Wrestling at the WWE 2K26 hands-on event.

“I mean, I can’t change the creative direction,” McIntyre said. “I talked about getting that match with Cena, getting in a situation on the microphone with Cena, just to prove what I’m capable of. Because I want to compete with the best, and he is, or was, the best on the microphone.”

McIntyre was originally scheduled to wrestle Cena at Crown Jewel in Australia last October. Those plans were scrapped shortly after Cena sent out a post on X asking if fans wanted to see him wrestle AJ Styles, and sure enough Styles eventually got the match at Crown Jewel. Cena later said his opponent was switched to AJ Styles so they could give the crowd “a feel-good moment.”

“I heard the quote. I heard what John said. Whatever people weren’t feeling what was going on, they decided to pivot. He outright asked, ‘Do you want AJ?‘ And the match was incredible. So, I could sit there and go, ‘Damn, what if?’ Or, ‘What if he Tweeted my name?’ But the reality is, he’s retired and I’m World Champion, so I think it worked out just fine for Drew McIntyre.”

McIntyre reiterated there is nothing he could have done to force his way into the match.

“I keep my head down and I keep working, no matter what happens. I can’t take his phone and say ‘Just Tweet my name.’”

McIntyre and Cena never had a singles match. They have shared the ring for tag matches and multi-person matches, including three times in 2025: at the Elimination Chamber, Royal Rumble, and when Cena and Cody Rhodes defeated McIntyre and Logan Paul on the August 8 SmackDown.

WOL: How will 2025 trends affect wrestling in 2026?

It’s the last WOL Saturday of the year with Jim Valley.

Today’s show looks ahead at what could happen in 2026, back at 2025, and some trends that aren’t going to go away simply because the ball dropped in Times Square.

We’ll preview AEW’s Worlds End with a tease of at least one prediction: people will complain that it’s too long – AGAIN.

Carmelo Hayes had a great match as he pinned Ilja Dragunov for the U.S. Title on an otherwise very standard episode of WWE SmackDown.

For better or worse, a lot of this year’s trends could also affect 2026.

We’ll take a look into our crystal ball and see what could lie ahead for wrestling companies all over the world in 2026.

WOL: The sameness of SmackDown

It’s the Saturday Wrestling Observer Live with Jim Valley.

This weekend has an international flavor with Friday’s TNA Emergence, Saturday’s TripleMania & the finals of the G1 Climax tournament, AEW Collision, NOAH, and the main event of CMLL’s 91st Anaversario card set.

Meanwhile, Friday’s WWE SmackDown felt like a lot of the same wrestlers doing the same things against the same opponents and the same outcomes. There’s a lot of top quality talent, but I feel like I’ve seen it again and again.
