NJPW crowns G1 Climax 34 winner

The G1 Climax 34 winner has been crowned. But they aren’t necessarily going to the Tokyo Dome.

Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Yota Tsuji on Sunday to win the G1 Climax tournament for the first time, winning with a submission that hooked both of Tsuji’s arms and legs in a match that lasted over 30 minutes. In his post-match promo, Sabre thanked his mentor Yoshinari Ogawa, who recently retired. He then made the announcement that he thought January was too far away, and liked the idea of having his title match at Ryogoku Sumo Hall. He said he wanted to have his IWGP World Heavyweight title match at King of Pro Wrestling, which is scheduled to take place on October 14.

During his backstage comments, Sabre said the goal was to win the IWGP World Heavyweight title at King of Pro Wrestling, then have his first defense the following week at Royal Quest IV on October 20 in London.

On commentary, it was noted that Sunday’s match marked the first time since 2012 that both finalists were competing in the finals for the first time. In that bout, Kazuchika Okada defeated Karl Anderson.

Finals set for NJPW G1 Climax 34

Semifinals set for NJPW G1 Climax 34

Only four wrestlers remain in this year’s NJPW G1 Climax.

The tournament playoffs began today with Shingo Takagi and Yota Tsuji securing their spots in the semifinals. Takagi defeated Great-O-Khan to advance, while Tsuji advanced with a victory against Konosuke Takeshita. Both semifinal matches are taking place this Saturday (August 17). It will be Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Takagi and David Finlay vs. Tsuji.

Sabre and Finlay won their respective blocks to earn a bye to the semifinals. In A Block, Sabre finished in first place with 14 points. Finlay topped the B Block standings with 12 points.

Airing live on NJPW World, Saturday’s event has a start time of 4 a.m. Eastern. Sumo Hall in Tokyo is hosting the show and will also host the tournament finals on Sunday (August 18).

The G1 winner earns the right to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 19 in January 2025. Currently, that title is held by Tetsuya Naito. Sabre and Takagi both defeated Naito in their A Block tournament matches.

Sabre, Finlay, and Tsuji have never held the IWGP World title before. Takagi is a one-time champion.

The full report from today’s G1 event can be read here.

Shingo Takagi defeated Great-O-Khan

Shingo was the first man to establish control by driving O-Khan into the corner and dropping him with a tackle. A suplex from O-Khan allowed him to take control from Shingo. O-Khan then used targeted holds and strikes to begin wearing down the arm of Shingo, perhaps to prevent the pumping bomber later in the match.

A DDT from Shingo opened the door for a rally. This lasted for a while, but O-Khan fired back with more grappling and more targeting limb work.

A quick side suplex from Shingo reset the match. Shingo followed up with a superplex. He then tried for Made in Japan but couldn’t get O-Khan up. After that didn’t work, he tried for pumping bomber, and each time, his targeted arm prevented the move from properly connecting. O-Khan then grabbed the arm and carried Shingo to the mat.

A pump kick from O-Khan opened the door for an Eliminator attempt. Shingo slipped free and hit the pumping bomber, but O-Khan kicked out. O-Khan then clubbed Shingo with a lariat and tried for a lariat again, but again, failed to connect.

Shingo tried for another bomber but was stuffed, leading to back-and-forth headbutts. O-Khan caught Shingo with a punch and transitioned into an arm breaker in the middle of the ring, nearly forcing the submission.

O-Khan went for an Eliminator attempt that Shingo reversed into a DDT. Shingo hit a German suplex and a pumping bomber with his other arm for a nearfall. He then landed Last of the Dragon and pinned O-Khan to win the match.

Shingo advances to face Zack Sabre Jr. in the Semi-Finals.

Yota Tsuji defeated Konosuke Takeshita

Takeshita secured an early lead, which he used to work over Tsuji on the mat. He tried following up with a senton from the top, but his injured knee slowed him down, allowing Tsuji to reverse and take control of the match. Tsuji then launched into an all-out attack on the knee after the door was opened.

Tsuji’s deliberate offense kept Takeshita grounded. Takeshita used Tsuji’s own speed to catch Tsuji with a lariat to reverse the match’s momentum. Takeshita followed up with a superplex before covering Tsuji with chairs and landing a senton to the floor.

Tsuji caught Takeshita with a backbreaker and a tope to re-assert his control. Takeshita fired back with a German before a double lariat left both men grounded.

Tsuji landed Raging Fire for a nearfall. He tried to close with Gene Blast, but Takeshita cut him off with a knee strike. Takeshita then climbed to the top, where Tsuji met him. Takeshita won out with a lariat, scoring him a nearfall of his own.

Takeshita tried for multiple lariats, but Tsuji refused to fall. Tsuji fired back with his own lariat and knee strike, followed by a barrage of slaps, a headbutt, and a curb stomp. When Tsuji tried his top rope stomp, Takeshita reversed into the blue thunder bomb.

Takeshita tried for Raging Fire, but Tsuji slipped free and hit the Gene Blaster. Takeshita used the rope to escape the pin, keeping his G1 alive. Tsuji tried for another, but Takeshita sidestepped it and hit a German. Before Takeshita could follow up, Tsuji bounced back, hit a second Gene Blaster, and won the match.

Tsuji will face Finlay in the semi-finals.

NJPW G1 Climax 34: First playoff match set, final A Block standings

G1 Climax 34 continued on Monday with the last night of A Block round-robin action in Nagaoka.

Zack Sabre Jr. went into today’s show having already clinched the top spot in the group. He receives a bye to the tournament semifinals. He beat SANADA on today’s show to finish the round-robin with 14 points and a 7-2 record.

Shingo Takagi and Great-O-Khan are the other two wrestlers to advance out of the group. They will meet in a quarterfinal match on Thursday. They finished tied with EVIL and Tetsuya Naito with 5-4 records and 10 points. The tie-breaker in that scenario is the head-to-head records of all tied competitors. Takagi advances out of the group as the second seed due to his 3-0 round-robin record against the other tied wrestlers. He beat Naito, EVIL, and O-Khan in the round-robin. O-Khan advances as a result of his 2-1 round-robin record over the other tied wrestlers. He had round-robin wins over Naito and EVIL.

G1 Climax 34 night 15 results:

  • A Block: Great-O-Khan (5–4) defeated Tetsuya Naito (5–4)
  • A Block: Shota Umino (4–5) defeated EVIL (5–4)

  • Jado & El Phantasmo defeated Gedo & David Finlay
  • Hirooki Goto & Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated Yota Tsuji & BUSHI

Other notes from today’s show:

  • Gabe Kidd attacked Callum Newman after their match. Kidd gave him a piledriver on a steel chair and Newman had to be helped to the back after.
  • Zack Sabre Jr. continued his good run in the tournament, beating and eliminating SANADA in the second round-robin bout of the show. ZSJ had already clinched the top spot in the group and celebrated in the crowd after the match.
  • The third tournament match had Jake Lee vs. Shingo Takagi with both wrestlers needing a win to keep their tournament hopes alive. Takagi picked up the win with a pumping bomber to increase his tally to 10 points. Lee attacked Takagi after the match as well but it was broken up pretty quickly.
  • Before the semi-main event could take place, House of Torture forced the ring announcer to read a statement saying that Umino was not there but Umino showed up moments later and the match began. Unsurprisingly, House of Torture interfered in the match. At one point, they had a five-on-one advantage on Umino with the referee down. It took a very long time, but NJPW president Hiroshi Tanahashi eventually came out to make the save. With everyone cleared from the ring, Umino hit EVIL with the Death Rider and picked up the win.
  • Heading into the main event, both IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Tetsuya Naito and Great-O-Khan needed a win to advance to the knockout round. After kicking out of a Destino, Great-O-Khan got the win with the Eliminator.

Sunday Update

– Our weekend show with Garrett Gonzales is up on the site, where we talked heavily on the life of Kevin Sullivan. That show is likely very different from any other show you’ll hear about him because of different perspectives of so many different parts of his career and post-career. We also talked about the key stories in the Observer. Bryan and I will be back tonight talking about lots of different topics including weekend shows, G-1, N- 1 and more.

– Hulk Hogan turned 71 today.

– Yuya Uemura is out of the G-1 tournament due to an elbow injury suffered in his win over Yota Tsuji yesterday in Sendai. For Thursday, if Jeff Cobb, David Finlay or Ren Narita, all 5-3, win on Thursday then they all make the playoffs. If they lose, they will be in a pack that would include the winners of bouts with Tsuji, Hirooki Goto and Konsuke Takeshita who can make the playoffs with a win and the right head-to-head record involving everyone who ends up with a 5-4 record.

– Saw a clip. 50 years ago yesterday I was at the Cow Palace for a show headlined by Jack Brisco vs. Moondog Mayne for the NWA world title (one of only  two Brisco NWA title bouts at the Cow Palace). It was a good match. All Brisco matches in that era were, but far from the type of bout he’d have with Dory Funk Jr., Harley Race or Johnny Valentine. The most memorable thing about the night is that early in the show, ring announcer Allan Bolte came out and announced that Brisco wasn’t there and Roy Shire hadn’t heard from him all day (no cell phones in 1974). He said they are assuming that he won’t be there and we have a new main event of Pat Patterson vs. Mayne in a non-title match. They offered refunds (they had to, back then if a main eventer didn’t appear a promoter had to offer refunds per athletic commission rules). Patterson was going to win to set up a U.S. title shot  at Mayne. Then 30 or so minutes later, Bolte comes running out, “Jack Brisco has arrived! The world champion has arrived”. Shire never booked Jack Brisco again.

– Looking for reports from today’s RevPro show at York Hall, the two Stardom Five Star Grand Prix shows from the weekend and today’s ROH show in Arlington, TX. We’re looking for results, finishes and  highlights to [email protected]

– I’m still going through a lot of stuff but two matches I have seen that are pretty much must-sees are Kaito Kiyomiya vs. Ryohei Oiwa from the N-1 tournament. You will see Oiwa in a completely different light from that one. The other is Oleg Boltin vs. Konosuke Takeshita from yesterday. Takeshita needs to take it easy on some of those high angle bumps because he has the talent to be one of the five best for probably another decade if he works smart. My God, talk about making Boltin look good.

– The Kennedy Blaydes German suplex at the Olympics yesterday.

– Kyle Snyder at 213 pounds only placed fifth at the Olympics. It was the first time the U.S. didn’t have a men’s gold medalist since 1968. Zain Retherford was injured in the first round and unable to continue. Spencer Lee got a silver medal. Aaron Brooks got a bronze. Kyle Dake got a bronze medal as well. Blaydes on the women’s side ended up with a silver medal.

– Japan won the team standings.

– At the closing ceremonies several members of Team Mexico wore masks, notably one wearing a Rayo de Jalisco mask.

– Masai Russell won the 100 meter hurdles yesterday, earning a gold medal. Russell is under contract to WWE as an NIL athlete.

– Raw on Monday announced Shayna Baszler & Zoey Stark vs. Iyo Sky & Kairi Sane, Bron Breakker vs. Sami Zayn for the IC title in a 2/3 fall match, Damian Priest vs. Carlito, and The Creeds vs. Otis & Tozawa, plus Rhea Ripley and Randy Orton are also announced.

– The angle at today’s RevPro show at York Hall saw MJF beat Michael Oku to keep the American title using the Tiger Driver.  Oku sold an injury. MJF then teased doing the move to Amira Blair (Oku’s girlfriend). Will Ospreay made the save and basically said he would not hesitate to use the Tiger Driver on MJF at All In.

– A block in G-1 finishes the round-robin in a show at 4 a.m. Monday morning Eastern time:

  • Evil (5-3) vs. Shota Umino (3-5)
  • Tetsuya Naito (5-3) vs. Great O’Khan (4-4)
  • Shingo Takagi (4-4) vs. Jake Lee (4-4)
  • Sanada (4-4) vs. Zack Sabre Jr. (6-2)
  • Callum Newman (2-6) vs. Gabe Kidd (3-5)

– Sabre has already won the block. Even if he loses, and Evil and/or Naito win, he’s got singles wins over both of them he’s in first. If Naito or Evil win, they are in the playoffs. If they lose, that opens it up for O-Khan, Takagi and Sanada if they win. Then it comes down to tie-breakers.

– Regarding ordering All In on Triller, it is now available to order. It wasn’t until late Friday. Also, they have a deal where for $84.99, or a $15 discount, you can order both All In and All Out.  That’s only on Triller

– Ninja Mack is leaving NOAH after tomorrow’s show. He said that this isn’t a permanent departure but he’s leaving for now.

– Donovan Dijak vs. Gabe Kidd has been added to the 8/24 Rev Pro show in London at the  Copper Box Arena.

– House of Glory debuts on 9/5 in Chicago at the Logan Square Arena. That’s two nights before All Out. Mike Santana vs. Donovan Dijak is the main event plus Mustafa Ali, Zilla Fatu and a women’s title match with Megan Bayne defending against Kylie Rae.

– FTR is doing a meet and greet in conjunction with the 9/29 Prestige Wrestling show in Portland, OR at the Roseland Theater.

– Tavion Heights lost on today’s N-1 show at Korakuen Hall to Manabu Soya. Heights is now 1-2 while Josh Briggs is 2-1, after losing yesterday to Jack Morris. Fans were chanting for Heights today because of his cool suplexes.

– Anna Jay debuted in the Stardom Five-Star Grand Prix beating Saori Anou. It was a good match. We heard Mayu Iwtani vs. Tam Nakano on yesterday’s show was a great match, as was Syuri vs. Starlight Kid (thanks to Paul Adams)

– Empire State Wrestling is doing a charity event with the PUNT Foundation to host a BBQ party to support local  families fighting pediatric cancer. The event is 9/7 at the Rapids Fire Hall in Lockport, NY.  It will run from 1 p.m. to 6 pm.

 – Antony Smith vs. Dominik Reyes is scheduled for the 12/14 UFC PPV  show in Las Vegas at the T Mobile Arena.

– Brock Anderson will make his MLW debut on 8/29.  He will form a new Andersons tag team with C.W. Anderson of ECW fame.

Yuya Uemura out of NJPW G1 Climax tournament due to injury

Yuya Uemura is out of the G1.

NJPW announced that due to an arm injury suffered Saturday morning against Yota Tsuji, Uemura has been pulled out of the tournament with no timetable for a return. Their website reads:

During his league match with Yota Tsuji in Sendai on August 9, Yuya Uemura sustained an injury to his right arm, and after consultation with NJPW medical staff, it has been determined that Uemura not compete in the remainder of the tournament.

The website also revealed that as a result of the injury, his final G1 match against Oleg Boltin on August 14 will be forfeited, with both men ending their run with eight points. The scheduled match on August 12 where Uemura and Taka Michinoku were scheduled to face Boltin and Toru Yano has been canceled.

The final cards of the G1 Climax tournament take place this week, with the finals taking place on August 18 at Sumo Hall. Standings as of night 14 can be found here.

Recommended Matches

SANADA vs. Great-O-Khan – This was a fun match built around limb work. While SANADA isn’t at his strongest selling an injury, O-Khan more than made up for that with a focused performance.

Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Gabe Kidd – This was a fantastic clash of styles. Kidd and ZSJ meshed well here, leading to a firey battle to determine the fate of A Block.

A Block Results

Tetsuya Naito defeated Callum Newman

This match was what you’d expect from a Naito opener in 2024. It wasn’t horrible, but nothing I’d seek out.

Newman rushed Naito on his way to the ring. Naito tried to hold on outside the ring but a dropkick sent Naito into the barricade, leaving Newman with an early lead over the IWGP champion.

Once the match entered the ring and officially began, Naito dumped Newman to the floor and removed his entrance vestments. He then pulled Newman back in the ring and began to focus on Newman’s neck.

Naito tried for his super hurricanrana, but Newman flipped onto his butt instead of his head. Newman followed up with a pair of kicks to gain some momentum over Naito, but a spinebuster and more neck work ended his rally.

Newman reversed Destino into a knee strike, setting up an OsCutter attempt that he missed. Naito then tried for Destino again, hit it, but only scored a nearfall. To close, Naito hit another Destino and pinned Newman to win the match.

Naito’s victory leaves him with 10 points.

Great-O-Khan defeated SANADA

This match was surprisingly great. I was focused and played to O-Khan’s strengths quite well.

O-Khan opened the match by trying to catch SANADA off guard, initially by pushing him into the ropes before transitioning a choke into a spinning backbreaker of sorts.

After missing an early attempt at Eliminator, O-Khan ate a SANADA magic screw reversing the momentum of the match. SANADA then tried for the rounding body press but landed on his feet, jamming his knee on the landing. This opened the door for a targeted O-Khan attack, forcing SANADA to the floor.

On the outside, O-Khan continued to focus the leg with attacks against the barricade and on the floor. The assault continued in the ring, with O-Khan utilizing multiple holds to establish control in the ring.

A pair of dropkicks bought SANADA some separation. He followed up with a quick plancha to establish control, but his leg stopped him from taking full advantage. SANADA tried for Skull End, only for O-Khan to reverse into a leg hold. SANADA slipped free and hit a partial shining wizard that did more damage to SANADA than O-Khan.

O-Khan delivered a couple of kicks to the back of SANADA’s knee but SANADA managed to answer with a TKO. The follow-up shining wizard was blocked by a stiff right from O-Khan, resetting the match.

O-Khan tried to get the eliminator, but SANADA slipped free. The response O’Connor roll from SANADA was reversed into a sleeper. O-Khan transitioned into a German suplex, but SANADA landed on his feet, leaving him free to hit the shining wizard to the back of O-Khan. SANADA hit a second shining to set up Deadfall, but O-Khan reversed into a facebuster. O-Khan then landed eliminator and pinned SANADA to win the match.

O-Khan keeps his G1 alive with this win, advancing to 8 points.

Jake Lee defeated Shota Umino

Umino reversed the expectations by rushing Lee as the match began. He then pursued Lee to the floor, where he tried having a War Dogs-style fight with Lee. Lee, unsurprisingly, won out here, drove Umino into the barricade, and hit Umino with a chair.

Back in the ring, Lee used basic holds to maintain his control, slowly working over Umino. After an extended period on the back foot, Umino landed a dropkick to gain a bit of momentum. The followup apron DDT and fisherman suplex scored Umino a nearfall.

Lee caught Umino with a knee strike to the midsection to force Umino back to the mat. Lee then kicked Umino while he was down, leading to a count that nearly ended the match.

Umino caught a knee from Lee and dropped him with a forearm. Umino then teased Lee with strikes, leading to an exchange in the middle of the ring. Lee won out and hit a German, only for Umino to answer with Blaze Blade. Umino followed up with ignition, scoring a nearfall.

On his second attempt, Umino hit death rider for a false finish. He picked Lee for another, but Lee reversed into a back suplex. Lee then turned back to his wear-down offense long enough to hit a chokeslam and score a nearfall.

Umino cut off the FBS with a Blaze Blade. He followed up with a second Blaze Blade, but the death rider followup was stuffed. Lee then landed Face Break Shot and pinned Umino to win the match.

Lee’s win puts him at 8 points, while this loss mathematically eliminates Umino from playoff contention.

Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Gabe Kidd

This match was fantastic. ZSJ was the perfect foil to Kidd’s ego.

Kidd tried chopping down ZSJ early. ZSJ responded by trying to take Kidd to the mat, but Kidd kept chopping. ZSJ fled to the floor, and Kidd continued to chop.

After dozens and dozens of chops, Kidd challenged ZSJ to sit in the ring and trade slaps. After landing a few back-and-forth palm strikes, Kidd bit ZSJ. This fired ZSJ up, leading to a rally.

After being on the receiving end of some high-impact ZSJ strikes, Kidd landed a lariat and a brainbuster. ZSJ responded with some targeted offense, focusing Kidd’s arm to maintain control. Kidd powered through with a suplex to reset the match.

After a short back and forth on the mat, Kidd hit ZSJ with Emerald Flowsion. He then attempted a moonsault, but ZSJ caught him in a triangle. Kidd fought out heavy strikes, but only after receiving heavy damage.

ZSJ tried for the Gotch piledriver, but Kidd stuffed it. When Kidd tried to answer, ZSJ caught him with the Zack Driver. A rebound lariat from Kidd led to another back-and-forth, ending with a choke from ZSJ. Kidd responded by saying he’d never tap out, flipping off the crowd, and passing out.

This win guarantees ZSJ’s spot in the playoffs with 12 points. Kidd has also been eliminated from contention.

Shingo Takagai defeated EVIL

This was horrible.

EVIL rushed Shingo as the match began, taking the match to the floor immediately. He drove Shingo into the barricade and attacked him with chairs to establish a strong lead.

After a long time on the back foot, Shingo hit a leg whip to gain some footing. Takagi’s rally was fairly uneventful, lasting until EVIL landed a lariat to retake control.

Shingo challenged EVIL with a quick strike exchange, ending with a sliding bomber that left Shingo ahead. When Shingo tried to follow up, EVIL bumped the referee and gouged EVIL’s eyes. Dick Togo then hit the ring, helping EVIL take control.

Hiromu ran to the ring to help Shingo but was overwhelmed without backup. A man dressed as BUSHI then appeared only to attack Shingo. Another BUSHI showed up, leading to the reveal that the original was Kaneamaru. From here, House of Torture destroyed Shingo with basically no pushback.

Shingo escaped Everything is Evil and landed a pumping bomber to buy some time. Shingo followed up with Made in Japan, but Dick Togo rang the bell early, breaking up the followup pin.

The referee was bumped again. Kanemaru then hit Shingo with his whiskey bottle, setting up the Magic Killer. Hiromu hit the ring again, causing enough distraction for Shingo to avoid Kanemaru’s whiskey misting. BUSHI then hit the ring and misted EVIL himself.

LIJ cleared the ring of HoT, leaving EVIL alone with Shingo. Shingo hit the pumping bomber. He then transitioned into Last of the Dragon and won the match.

Shingo now rests at 8 points, staying alive in the G1.
