Chelsea Green on Matt Cardona’s WWE return: ‘Waited for this moment for five years’

Matt Cardona’s return to WWE SmackDown last week didn’t come out of nowhere. His wife and coworker Chelsea Green says it was the result of five years of hard work.

In an interview with Branson Quirke and Roger Corral of TMZ Sports, Green was asked if she had been nervous for Cardona’s return. “I think I got all my nerves out of the way when he debuted at the John Cena’s last match tournament,” she replied. “So, it wasn’t as much nervousness as it was then in Albany, but it was a different feeling because we’ve now waited for this moment for five years.”

“And I know how hard I worked to get back here. He worked even harder to get back here,” she added. “He worked twice as long on the indies this time around and he really reinvented himself and that was also kind of like where a little bit of the nerves came into play.”

Green also talked about how Cardona had changed in his time away from WWE. “How are we going to go from transitioning him out of Zack Ryder and into Matt Cardona and still paying respects to who he was and the fact that some fans will only remember Zack Ryder?” she asked. “They won’t have known his indie run. They won’t have known that he trended worldwide for a death match against Nick Gage. They won’t know that he’s now the indie god or that he’s a completely different person, that he that he never was a heel in WWE and now spent the past five years as a heel.

“All those things are things we need to now introduce the WWE universe to. So it’s kind of a whole new bunch of nerves, but it’s just more excitement than anything.”

Green also talked about losing the WWE Women’s United States Championship to Giulia on SmackDown. “So, full disclosure, I’m lucky to have hair left after that match,” she said. “I was limping on both legs. It was definitely like a Japanese strong style match. And I’ve been to Japan. That was the hardest Japanese strong style match I’ve ever had. Even after living in Japan and wrestling [Kairi Sane] and [Iyo Sky] and [Mayu Iwatani] and all of the Stardom girls. It was really, really rough. I have to give it to Giulia because she beat my ass.”

Giulia wins Women’s United States title on WWE SmackDown

Two months after losing the WWE Women’s United States Championship to Chelsea Green, Giulia regained it on Friday’s WWE SmackDown.

After Green got a nearfall with Radio Silence (the finishing move of her husband, Matt Cardona, who returned to WWE earlier in the evening), she went to the top rope. Giulia brought her down with a butterfly superplex, then followed with a northern lights bomb for the clean win and title change.

Green originally won the title in November after Giulia was distracted by a brawl between Kiana James and Alba Fyre at ringside. Green quickly pinned Giulia with a schoolgirl, getting her feet on the ropes for leverage.

Giulia and James have been feuding with Green and Fyre in both singles and tag matches, on TV and on house shows ever since.

Giulia has now won two WWE Women’s United States Championships, one NXT Women’s Championship, and one Iron Survivor Challenge in just 16 months as a member of the WWE roster.

Title match, Cody Rhodes-Drew McIntyre segment added to WWE SmackDown

WWE has made a couple of new announcements for tonight’s episode of SmackDown.

SmackDown moves back to three hours starting with tonight’s show from Buffalo, New York. A title match has been added to the lineup with Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green defending against Giulia, who is looking to reclaim the belt after Green won it from her back in November.

Green and Giulia are two of the only three women to have held the Women’s U.S. title since it was introduced at the end of 2024. A two-time champ, Green regained the belt in their November match by taking advantage of a distraction and pinning Giulia while having her feet on the ropes for leverage.

WWE has also announced that Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre will appear on SmackDown tonight — and McIntyre will reveal the stipulations for their upcoming Three Stages of Hell match. That match is taking place on the January 9 edition of SmackDown with Rhodes putting his WWE Championship on the line against McIntyre.

Here is the updated lineup for tonight:

WWE SmackDown (Friday, January 2) —

  • Drew McIntyre reveals stipulations for Three Stages of Hell match against Cody Rhodes
  • Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green defends against Giulia
  • Ambulance match: Damian Priest vs. Aleister Black
  • IYO SKY, Rhea Ripley, Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss vs. Asuka, Kairi Sane, Nia Jax & Lash Legend
  • Non-title: WWE Women’s Champion Jade Cargill vs. Michin (may be in question due to Michin’s shoulder injury)

WWE NXT live results: Women’s United States title match

WWE NXT celebrates Christmas week with a pre-taped episode airing tonight on The CW.

After defeating Bayley at Saturday Night’s Main Event, Sol Ruca has been awarded a title match by NXT General Manager Ava. She gets her shot tonight against Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green. Ruca already owns a victory over Green from a tag team match that took place on SmackDown back in October.

A tournament begins tonight as WWE decides the next challenger for men’s Speed Champion Jasper Troy. The first-round matchups are Tavion Heights vs. Eli Knight and Andre Chase vs. Lexis King.

Lola Vice vs. Izzi Dame is also set to air on the episode. Along with that, there will be a mixed tag team match with WWE LFG winners Skylar Raye & Shiloh Hill taking on Arianna Grace & Stacks. It’s billed as a no holds barred Christmas Chaos match.

Join us for coverage starting at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

**********

NXT was taped in front of a live studio audience. From a sound stage at the Performance Center in Orlando, NXT is on the air with a holiday-themed episode.

Opening the show is a singles match in the women’s division.

Lola Vice vs. Izzi Dame (with The Culling)

The match goes through a commercial break, with Dame escaping a sleeper hold just before the show cuts to commercials. When the show returns from the break, Vice escapes a Boston crab. Vice then begins a comeback with a few near falls and an Umaga splash.

At ringside, Shawn Spears distracts Vice trying to trip her feet. That allowed Dame to boot Vice in the face. Suddenly, the noise a chain saw fills the arena. Tatum Paxley is Chainsaw Charlie, as she busts through a gimmicked section of the set wielding a chainsaw. No actual chain on the saw but the motor was revved up, so Shawn Spears ran for his life.

Dame was distracted by the chain saw run-in, and she walked into a spinning back fist from Vice. Dame drops like a stone, and Vice covers her.

Match results: Lola Vice defeated Izzi Dame via pinfall.

In a post-match angle, Kelani Jordan runs in and ambushes Vice. Jordan pummels Vice and stands over her with a scowl.

— NXT Women’s North American Champion Thea Hail talks with Jordynne Grace in a locker room skit. They are watching Hail’s title win from last week. Hail then leaves, as she heads to the ring for a monologue.

— NXT Men’s North American Champion Ethan Page cuts a cocky promo on Myles Borne in another backstage skit. Page talks down to Borne. Page also says people think the main roster is the shark tank, but Page insists that NXT is the shark tank. Sharks from all over the ocean come here. Page says live up to the task or move on. Page also tells Borne he can watch Page take care of TNA’s best talent next week in a match.

Blake Monroe confronts Thea Hail

Thea Hail enters the ring with her newly won Women’s North American title belt. Hail acknowledges last week was controversial, and though she cannot believe she won, Hails still won the title! This has been the greatest week of her life.

Hail gets emotional as the studio audience chants she deserved it. Hail emotions Andre Chase teachings, along with lessons from her friendships have all lead to her becoming the youngest Women’s North American Champion in history.

Blake Monroe interrupts the monologue, and Monroe still looks panicked after last week. Monroe also appears disheveled. Monroe rants about Hail’s title win being a fluke and a mistake. Monroe wants her title back, but Hail says no. Hail insists that Monroe lost clean. Monroe buries the referee from the match.

Hail eventually says she will grant Monroe a rematch next week for the title. Monroe then hits Hail with a cheap shot, and they brawl around the ring until officials separate them.

— Sarah Schreiber interviews Sol Ruca and Zaria. “You can’t control the wave, but you learn how to ride them,” Ruca says. Sage advice from Sol Ruca. She won a match on Saturday Nights Main Event. Thus, Ruca earns a title shot against Chelsea Green. Zaria says Sol deserves her title back, and Zaria will be in her corner to help.

Eli Knight vs. Tavion Heights in a Speed tournament match

Of course, the match was quick with a three-minute time limit, but it was pretty dang good while it lasted. Heights won with a belly-to-belly suplex. Knight got a fly, and he shined during the match. He and Heights shook hands and embraced in a show of good sportsmanship.

With the win, Heighs advanced from the first round of the number one contender’s tournament for a shot at the WWE Speed Championship.

Match result: Tavion Heights defeated Eli Knight via pinfall to advance in the WWE Speed Championship number one contender’s tournament.

— TNA X-Division Champion Leon Slater and NXT Champion Oba Femi are sitting down for a face-to-face interview alongside Kelly Kincaid.

TNA X-Division Champ Leon Slater face-to-face with NXT Champ Oba Femi

The successful year of Femi is discussed first, with them pointing out many of Femi’s highlights like his run as champion of NXT and wrestling Cody Rhodes. Femi has proven himself as “The Ruler” in NXT. When he recently returned, Femi looks to prove he is the ruler of not just NXT — but WWE itself.

Slater talks about being turned on to wrestling via video games, DVDs, and action figures. He started training at nine years old. It is not so crazy when you have his passion for it. Slater makes moment, and me will make another moment next week at New Year’s Evil when he defeats Femi for the NXT title.

Femi responds by warning Slater’s story will not have a happy ending. Slater insists they will see who speaks louder in their title match. Femi smirks as he agrees, and they shake hands.

Je’Von Evans and Ricky Saints face-to-face

— NXT General Manager Ava is in the ring to host the face-to-face meeting of Saints and Evans. Ava is flanked by security as Saints and Evan enter separately.

Evans wonders why they are talking and not throwing hands. Saints remarks that Evans is so impulsive while speculating he lacks emotional intelligence. Saints takes a dig at Evans over him being too young to rent a car, let alone be the face of the NXT brand.

They banter back-and-forth. Evans accuses Saints of being jealous, so that is why Saints attacks Evans during his match with Oba Femi. Saints scoffs as he rants about how he could be on Good Morning America. Saints further insults Saints about the way he talks.

Evans says that may be true, but Evans points out he was on Raw and Smackdown. Saints was not there. Nor was he on the card for John Cena’s last match like Evans. They banter some more before Ava cuts them off and says they will settle this feud next week in a match. Security keeps them apart. And scene.

— In a backstage skit, Fatal Influence confronts Wren Sinclair and Evolve Women’s Champion Kendal Grey. NXT Women’s Champion Jacy Jayne challenges Sinclair to a “warm-up match” next week on NXT. Sinclair accepts the challenge.

Shiloh Hill & Skylar Raye vs. Arianna Grace & Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo in a mixed “Christmas Chaos” match

This was a hardcore match with a Christmas theme, and it was pretty decent in spite of the cheesy holiday gimmick. They took some crazy bumps in the name of comedy. Cliches are king, with holiday-themed weapons like a kendo stick wrapped as a candy cane. Ornaments, presents, wreaths and some yuletide are all used as props.

Hill & Raye jump the heels before the bell, and the brawl is under way. Gimmicks come into play earlier and often, as they brawl through a commercial break. They play on the bowling ball spot from ECW decades ago, except this time it is slapstick comedy. With Hill tied in the corner by a strand of Christmas lights, Grace presents Stacks the gift of a bowling ball. Except she inadvertently gives Stacks a low blow and drops the ball on his foot. Comedy ensues.

On the floor, Grace takes a bump on a Christmas tree in another comedy spot. Hill puts a wreath around Stacks before delivering a guillotine legdrop. Hill & Raye then toss sugar cookies into the crowd, until they are cut off. Moments later, Hill takes Santa’s sack and dumps pines cones on a table. Hill then powerbombs Stacks through the table. Raye then leaps off the top rope with a frog splash on Grace, and Raye covers her for a three count.

Match result: Shiloh Hill & Skylar Raye defeated Arianna Grace & Stacks in a Christmas Chaos match when Raye pinned Grace.

— Joe Hendry appears in a skit where Darkstate are in Ava’s office. Dion Lennox and Darkstate offer warnings to Hendry. After Darkstate leaves, Hendry pitches to Ava a live concert for next week.

— OTM and Swipe Right are on a collision course after another backstage skit. Kelly Kincaid is interviewing OTM when the Vanity Project trio roll up to give Kincaid gifts they originally got for Blake Monroe. OTM take exception to the interruption of their interview, and they issue a warning to Swipe Right.

Andre Chase vs. Lexis King in a WWE Speed tournament match

They both had inset promos like this was an old episode of Superstars of Wrestling from back in the day. Much like matches on that show, this bout was short. That was more because it was a Speed match, instead of a squash. Chase got to shine, but King wins after executing The Coronation.

King advances to the final round of the tournament, where he faces Tavion Heights for a shot at WWE Speed Champion Jasper Troy.

Match result: Lexis King defeated Andre Chase via pinfall to advance in the WWE Speed Championship number one contender’s tournament.

— Hank & Tank gives Tavion Heights a pep talk in a backstage skit that also involved Myles Borne.

Chelsea Green (with Alba Fyre & Ethan Page) vs. Sol Ruca (with Zaria) for the WWE Women’s United States Championship

On commentary, Booker T is able to reference Killer Tim Brooks. That popped me at least. Booker was unhinged at times, and it was hilarious. Meanwhile, a title bout ensues that goes through a commercial break. Green takes a bump outside the ring, which sets up Ruca doing a back flip off the top into a moonsault on the floor. Green and the Secret Hervice are the target.

Ruca gets to shine, and they go on to trade near falls. They also took some big bumps. After Ruca does her signature cartwheel into a DDT, she hooks a leg on Green. Ethan Page interferes by putting Green’s leg on the rope, thus breaking up the pin attempt. Zaria confronts Page at ringside, and she yells at him. Suddenly, Moose runs down to attack Page. They brawl their way off stage.

For the finish itself, Ruca goes for her finisher. However, Alba Fyre interferes by grabbing Ruca’s foot. That allows Green to counter Ruca, and Green drops her with an Unprettier. Green then covers Ruca for a three count. And still…

Match result: WWE Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green defeated Sol Ruca via pinfall to retain her title with the help of outside interference.

In a post-match attack, Zaria spears Green and Fyre. Ruca then executes a double Sol Snatcher on Green and Fyre. Happy ending of sorts as they send viewers into the holidays. But first, a hard sell for next Tuesday night on NXT.

Chelsea Green happy to ‘be the idiot’ in WWE

Chelsea Green has no problem playing an “idiot” in WWE because it’s a role that keeps bringing her more and more success.

In her WWE career, Green has prioritized character work to make sure that she always has a spot on the card. That approach has brought her success in the ring as well, with Green currently being a double champion. She holds the Women’s United States Championship on SmackDown and is one-half of the Lucha Libre AAA Mixed Tag Team Champions with her NXT tag partner Ethan Page.

Green appeared on a recent live episode of Insight with Chris Van Vliet and was asked why she feels so comfortable being the butt of the joke.

“Because it gets me views, and it gets me a new contract, and it gets me a raise, and it bought me my new house,” Green responded. “And honestly, hopefully, in the next year it gets me numerous auditions, you know what I mean? Like, hopefully this parlays into something even bigger than we ever could have imagined — because I was able to just, like, tuck my tail between my legs and be the idiot.”

Green signed a new five-year contract with WWE this year. Along with her WWE work, Green has ambitions of further breaking into the entertainment field as an actor and host.

“I’ve been auditioning for role after role, and trying to dabble in the hosting space as well,” Green told Women’s World magazine this October. “I’m trying to start at the bottom and not cut corners. I want to do it the right way and gain respect within film and TV — not get there because I had it handed to me on a WWE silver platter.”

Chelsea Green credits ‘pestering’ for Matt Cardona’s WWE return: ‘They caved’

Chelsea Green spoke about her husband Matt Cardona’s WWE return as Zack Ryder during a recent interview, saying that “pestering” factored into it.

Speaking to Unlikely with Adrian Hernandez, Green said that she and her husband only found out at the very last moment about his return.

“We didn’t really know what was happening until the very last moment. You know how WWE is, you know how professional wrestling is,” she said. “It can be in talks for months or it can be in talks for 24 hours. Either way, when they call you, you pick up the phone and then you get on a plane.”

Green mentioned that it was the same for Ethan Page for a recent appearance on WWE SmackDown, where he was given little notice before having to travel to the show.

She continued to say that Cardona has been in contact with WWE “constantly” since his departure in 2019. She says he always makes sure to let Triple H know that he is available for appearances, the Royal Rumble, etc.

Green continued:

“He’s been in contact with WWE constantly. The whole five years he’s been in contact with WWE. He’s always making sure that Triple H knows what he’s doing or that he’s available for a Rumble and things like that.

She also said that Cardona’s return can be attributed to her pestering WWE, John Cena pestering WWE, and Cardona pestering the company as well, calling it a “perfect storm.”

I just think it was a perfect storm of this made the most sense because he does have a personal friendship and relationship with John Cena, so why wouldn’t he want to be John Cena’s final opponent? It worked perfectly between me pestering WWE, between John Cena pestering WWE, and Matt pestering WWE, they caved.”

Green’s comments about Cardona’s return come in around the 13-minute and 53-second mark of the interview. It is cued in the below video:

Chelsea Green explains why she’s so proud of new WWE merch item

Getting her signature hat released on WWE Shop is something Chelsea Green views as one of her biggest pro wrestling accomplishments.

The gold-colored hat went on sale earlier this month and will be shipped out no later than the end of January 2026. Green tweeted that getting the hat released meant a lot to her, calling it a multi-year labor of love. She went into more depth while speaking with Adrian Hernandez, explaining the three-year process she went through to make the hat available at a reasonable price.

“The past three years, every Friday, I pitched that hat. Every single Friday,” Green said. “I found out who to pitch it to. Then I found out who the buyers were. Then I found out where they were buying. Then I found out why they couldn’t get the hats made. Then I found out how to make the hats more of a reasonable price for my fans. Like, I have literally been along for the entire ride of these hats. That’s why it means so much to me to put them out.”

Green said the merch item holds so much value to her because it’s something she made happen. She’s proud of her title reigns as well, but the hat might be her biggest accomplishment.

“I’m not joking when I say that that might be the best accomplishment I have in WWE — or in my wrestling career,” she said.

“Because at the end of the day, I made that happen. These [titles], I didn’t make happen necessarily. I worked my ass off, but at the end of the day, someone decides these things, right? That hat — I did everything to make sure that hat went on sale and [that] it went on sale for $34.99 and [that] it went on sale this year. I’m so proud of it. I’m so proud of it, because I know that little girls and boys are going to go up, they’re going to look at that wall of merch, and they’re going to see that sparkly hat and they’re going to choose that over a Yeet shirt.”

Green is currently on her second reign as WWE Women’s United States Champion, along with holding the AAA Mixed Tag Team titles with Ethan Page.

Mixed Tag Team title match added to next AAA TV taping

A newly released WWE Shop merchandise item is something that Chelsea Green has been working on for a long time.

Priced at $34.99, a replica version of Green’s signature hat is now on sale via WWE Shop. Green called the merch release a huge moment for her, saying it’s been a two-year process to convince WWE to create the item and then design and source it.

“I don’t know if I can put into words what it means to have this hat go on @WWEShop,” Green wrote. “It has been a two year labor of love! From convincing, to sourcing, to designing. This is a huge moment for me and for the fans who have been with me on this (almost) 12 year ride. 2025 has been my greatest year in wrestling yet!”

Green, who signed a new five-year WWE contract this year, is a double champion after notching two recent title wins. She holds the Women’s United States Championship on SmackDown in addition to being one-half of the AAA Mixed Tag Team Champions with Ethan Page. The Green-Page duo has been featured in NXT, where Page is the men’s North American Champion.

Chelsea Green, Matt Cardona share statements on Green’s WWE US title win

Chelsea Green and her husband Matt Cardona have both shared statements regarding Green regaining the WWE Women’s United States Championship.

The now two-time champion defeated Giulia for the belt on SmackDown with a roll up and her feet on the ropes. Following her win, Green promised to “rebuild our company” in her second “term” as champion.

She wrote:

“I vow to rebuild our company and this @WWE United States Women’s Championship starting TODAY. 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 🇲🇽 Red, White & GREEN begins now. The second term will be the most historic. 🫡 @WWENXT @luchalibreaaa”

Cardona, a former men’s United States Champion, also released a statement on social media after Green’s win, noting that Green’s win should serve as inspiration to anyone released from WWE, writing:

“When wrestlers ask me for advice, I say don’t quit…that’s it. You might make it if you don’t. You definitely won’t make it if you do. @ImChelseaGreen is proof of that.
A career of highs and lows…didn’t complain…did the work…did the extra work…was Alwayz Ready! (she’ll hate that I said the part)
I’m very proud of you babe…I love you.”

Green responded to Cardona’s post:

“Underdog mentality is done. Im in the top 1% and I deserve it. Nobody did this for me. I did this.”

Green winning the WWE Women’s United States title was the second title win for Green this week. Along with Ethan Page, she won the AAA Mixed Tag Team Championships from La Hiedra and Mr. Iguana last Sunday, November 2. They are set to defend the belts against Thea Hail and Joe Hendry at NXT Gold Rush on November 18 after an angle set up the match on NXT on Tuesday.

Cardona and Green’s posts are below:

WOL: It’s not the number of titles, but what you do with them

It’s time for the Saturday edition of Wrestling Observer Live with Jim Valley.

This week’s introduction of the AEW National title has reignited the old argument about too many titles in wrestling. How many is too many? Three? Five? Eleven?

Until Friday, Giulia was one of two women’s champions on WWE SmackDown. Is she a bigger star after being U.S. Champion? It’s not the number of titles — it’s what you do with them.

Plus, Jim’s thoughts on WWE SmackDown, NOAH, NJPW, AEW Collision, and a talk with author Dan Murphy on his new book about Olympic and pro wrestler Ed Don George.

Giulia reacts to losing WWE Women’s United States Championship

Giulia is angry after losing the WWE Women’s Championship on SmackDown on Friday.

One day after setting the record for the longest reign with the title, Giulia dropped it back to the previous record holder, Chelsea Green, who scored the win with a roll-up and her feet on the ropes.

Giulia reacted to the loss on Saturday via social media, writing:

“I’m angry at myself, Chelsea…….at EVERYTHING. That’s real funny dumbass. Just watch. I’m going tear it all apart.”

Green responded to Giulia, writing:

“Get used to that feeling G. I’m your champion now… looks like you’re going to be angry for a while”

Giulia’s manager Kiana James also replied to a post from Green referring to herself as a double champion.

“You are a DOUBLE pain in my ass and a coalition of incompetence,” James wrote.

Green responded, “Kiana, how many times do I have to say… jealousy is a disease and honey you are infected.”

Friday marked Green’s second title win of the week. Alongside Ethan Page, she also captured the AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championships from La Hiedra and Mr. Iguana on November 2.

It was the fourth title change in the championship’s 11-month history. Green won the inaugural title at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 14, 2024.

Ethan Page says pairing with Chelsea Green is a ‘yin and yang situation’

Ethan Page discussed his pairing with Chelsea Green in a recent interview.

Page and Green won the AAA Mixed Tag Team Championships from La Hiedra and Mr. Iguana on November 2. Five days later, Green defeated Giulia to regain the Women’s United States Championship on SmackDown.

Speaking with The Mark Moses Show, Page said Green brings out a softer side in him while he aims to bring out a more dangerous side in her.

“She definitely brings out a softer side in me, whereas I feel I will bring out a more dangerous side in her, maybe a darker side, a more violent side,” Page said.

“I think it’s like a yin and yang situation too. I am very obsessed with wrestling, have been my whole life, almost to the point of a historian, at least with the skill set of wrestling. And she is not. She is a full-fledged entertainer turned wrestler and has fallen in love with this throughout her career. So we have different perspectives on wrestling, and I think that helps it as well.”

Page was ringside at SmackDown for Green’s title win. Giulia dominated much of the match until Alba Fyre and Kiana James brawled at ringside, distracting Giulia and allowing Green to roll her up, put her feet on the ropes, and score the pin.

Up next, Green and Page have been challenged to defend their AAA Mixed Tag Team Championships against Joe Hendry and Thea Hail at the November 18 NXT Gold Rush show. Page is also scheduled to challenge El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. for the AAA Latin American Championship on December 20 at Guerra de Titanes.

Page’s full appearance on The Mark Moses Show is available below:
