Jelly Roll appearance, Tag Team title match set for next WWE SmackDown

For the first time since winning the WWE Tag Team titles a week ago, the first defense for The Wyatt Sicks will come on next week’s edition of SmackDown.

Made during Friday’s show, Rey Mysterio & Andrade will challenge Dexter Lumis & Joe Gacy for the gold they won from The Street Profits. The duo earned the shot in a fatal four-way as they defeated three sets of former champions in #DIY, Fraxiom and the Motor City Machine Guns.

Mysterio last held the gold with Dominik Mysterio in 2021 while Andrade has never held WWE tag team gold.

Jelly Roll, Logan Paul, Randy Orton and Drew McIntyre will all be on hand as the build toward their SummerSlam match — and Jelly Roll’s pro wrestling debut — continues.

Ahead of Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair challenging Women’s Tag Team Champions Roxanne Perez & Raquel Rodriguez at SummerSlam, Bliss and Perez will go one-on-one.

Here’s the current lineup for Cleveland, Ohio:

  • Jelly Roll, Randy Orton, Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul appearances
  • WWE Tag Team Champions The Wyatt Sicks (Dexter Lumis & Joe Gacy) defend against Andrade & Rey Fenix
  • Alexa Bliss vs. Roxanne Perez

Charlotte Flair opens up about divorce, injury recovery: ‘This is my biggest comeback yet’

After all she’s been through recently, Charlotte Flair feels like she’s in the middle of her biggest comeback yet.

Charlotte spent the entirety of 2024 out of action due to a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus. At the same time as she was recovering from knee surgery, Charlotte was going through a divorce from WWE star Andrade. She filed for divorce in June 2024, but the news was not made public until earlier this year.

During an appearance on “Sherri” with Sherri Shepherd, Charlotte opened up about the difficult year she had. She felt like she was failing in all aspects of her life. And with this being her third divorce, Charlotte was embarrassed by the comparisons she knew people would make to her father’s failed marriages.

“I felt like I was failing at my job, I felt like I was failing in my personal life. And the embarrassment of being divorced again and then being compared to my father. Hold on, let me gather myself,” the visibly emotional Charlotte said. “When I made the decision to file for divorce, the only thing that I kept thinking was like, I just didn’t want anyone to know. Like, ‘Oh my gosh, I have failed again.’ And then my knee and then I think, you know, as women — I think men, too — but it’s like, everyone’s probably thinking, ‘Well, she’s going to come back a year older. She’s going to come back less than. She’s coming back off this knee injury.’ And, unfortunately, the WWE audience hasn’t gotten to see the comeback of Charlotte Flair. This wasn’t a Charlotte Flair redemption story. But for me, it’s a redemption story for me, because everything that I have feared or been scared of or embarrassed of publicly. Because everyone has an opinion, even if they don’t know the facts.”

The process was difficult, but Charlotte feels like she has now found her worth. She returned to the ring this February and won the women’s Royal Rumble, earning a title shot against WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton at WrestleMania 41.

“It’s ok not to be ok, that’s what I learned. It’s ok to take a moment, take a breather, to start over. And I was able to keep the divorce a secret until I came back, won the Royal Rumble, and then I was on Monday Night Raw,” Charlotte told Sherri. “And then, boom, everything hits the media. Everything that I had been scared of hit that day. And I was like, ‘The fight’s over. I have nothing to fight. This is me, this is who I am, I’m standing in my worth, and people can have their opinions.’ I think to the audience who watches wrestling, they don’t know what Charlotte has been through to get to where she is. But I know. So for Ashley, this is my biggest comeback yet.”

The title match between Stratton and Charlotte is fast approaching with WrestleMania being held at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday, April 19 and Sunday, April 20.

Dragon Lee defeats Andrade for WWE Speed title

Dragon Lee is the third-ever wrestler to hold the WWE Speed Championship.

A title change aired on Speed this week with Dragon Lee defeating Andrade to become the new champion. Taped in Milwaukee at last Friday’s SmackDown event, the match took up nearly 4:30 of the extended five-minute time limit that exists for title bouts. Andrade appeared to take advantage of the match by countering Operation Dragon in the closing stretch, but Lee used an inside cradle to get the pinfall victory as Andrade was going for Three Amigos.

The two shook hands after the match and Andrade put the WWE Speed title belt around Lee’s waist.

Ricochet, Andrade, and Lee are the first three wrestlers to hold the WWE Speed Championship since the show premiered on X/Twitter this April. Following his win, Lee cut a brief promo thanking everyone who has supported him:

The focus on Speed will now shift back to the women’s division next week with the start of a number one contender’s tournament. The tournament will determine the first challenger for inaugural women’s WWE Speed Champion Candice LeRae.

Zelina Vega vs. Chelsea Green is premiering on Speed at noon Eastern time next Wednesday (November 27). Natalya vs. B-Fab, Katana Chance vs. Alba Fyre, and Michin vs. Ivy Nile are the other first-round matches that will be taking place in the weeks to come.

Dragon Lee to challenge for WWE Speed Championship

Dragon Lee has the chance to bring championship gold to the LWO.

By winning a tournament, Lee is now the number one contender to the WWE Speed Championship. He will challenge Andrade for the title on the episode of Speed that premieres on X/Twitter at noon Eastern time next Wednesday (November 20).

The finals of the number one contender’s tournament aired today with Lee defeating Akira Tozawa. Lee got the victory with Operation Dragon, pinning Tozawa with 23 seconds remaining on the clock. Lee then helped Tozawa up after the match as the two showed respect to each other.

Lee defeated NXT wrestler Tavion Heights in the first round of the tournament and then got a bye with Sheamus and Bron Breakker both being eliminated due to a time limit draw.

Next week’s match will be Andrade’s fourth title defense since becoming WWE Speed Champion in June. He’s retained the belt with victories over Xavier Woods, Baron Corbin, and Pete Dunne. Title matches on Speed have a five-minute time limit, an increase from the usual three minutes for non-title bouts.

WWE SmackDown live results: Cody Rhodes & Gunther go face-to-face

Nearly one week before they square off at Crown Jewel, undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes will go face-to-face with WWE World Heavyweight Champion Gunther on tonight’s WWE SmackDown from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The last time these two shared a ring was on the October 14th Raw where they exchanged verbal barbs before Rhodes invited Gunther to SmackDown. The two will meet for the ceremonial Crown Jewel Championship next Saturday in Saudi Arabia.

Carmelo Hayes and Andrade will go one-on-one in the finale of their recent best-of-seven series. United States Champion LA Knight will be the special guest referee.

After winning their respective triple threat matches last week, #DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa) will face the Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) who debuted on last week’s show. The winner will earn a future Tag Team title shot against The Bloodline.

Join us for live coverage starting at 8 PM EST.

**********

– The show opened with the Crown Jewel Championship case shown being brought into the arena. Gunther and Cody were also shown entering the building. Ditto for Motor City Machine Guns, #DIY and Randy Orton, the last of which featured Orton stopping on the way to the ring to talk to Paul Levesque in Guerrilla Position. Levesque motioned for Orton to go the ring.

The Randy Orton/Paul Levesque segment

Well, it was fun to have Levesque out there, and it was fun seeing Orton walk past him backstage before ultimately getting to the ring and calling Levesque out. They tried with the promo. Hard. Really hard. Noticeably hard. But I am interested in seeing what this means for how Owens approaches their match at Crown Jewel. If he’s going to be painted as a ruthless, angry fella, he better be both ruthless and angry and he better not hold back – especially after all this.

Orton noted how he wanted to get his hands on Kevin Owens, but it looks like Owens is off limits. Orton then invited Levesque to the ring. Orton said he thought Levesque was protecting Owens from Orton. The Triple H music then hit and Levesque was seen getting up from Guerrilla and Levesque appeared in the entranceway. Levesque said Orton never shows up to work on time and because of that, they had to “do this now.”

Orton yelled that Levesque is protecting Owens, but Levesque said he wasn’t protecting anybody. Levesque told Orton that the match isn’t going to happen and Orton kept yelling it is because Levesque is trying to protect Owens and finally Levesque shut orton up and said he was trying to protect Orton. The crowd chanted “RKO!” Levesque explained that Owens has never had a friend in this business. Levesque noted how Owens is all about nothing but business. Levesque said for the first time, Owens let his guard down and trusted Orton and Cody. Levesque worked in calling Orton a “miserable prick.” Levesque then noted how Cody and Orton turned on Owens.

Levesque said he talked to Owens and he doesn’t think Owens is the same Kevin Owens and he doesn’t want to put him in the ring with Orton. Levesque referenced how steel rods were just put into Orton’s back and he said he doesn’t want to see Orton go back on the shelf – perhaps permanently. Orton said none of that would happen and he didn’t ask “Paul Levesque” to come to the ring – instead, Orton wanted the Cerebral Assassin and The Game. Orton referenced how The Game used to beat the hell out of him, including in his front lawn. Orton asked Levesque what he would do if he was in Orton’s shoes. Orton said this was him talking man to man. Orton said Levesque knows what it’s like to have everything taken away from him and if Levesque was in Orton’s shoes, he would want to handle his business the only way he knows how – in the middle of the ring. Orton begged Levesque for the match against Owens.

Levesque said he hopes to God Orton knows what he’s asking for and noted how if Orton wants Owens at Crown Jewel, he’s got him. Levesque then left the ring after saying he hopes Orton protects himself at all times.

Andrade vs. Carmelo Hayes ended in a No Contest [9:45]

Lame. Lame on every level. Lame on every single solitary level. Even the live crowd agreed as the finish fell flat and Knight, who is typically super-over everywhere he goes, got little to no response as he spoke on the microphone. WWE stumbled into a great wrestling-focused program with Andrade and Melo and this is how they blow it off? Obviously, this won’t be the real blow off, but to tease a Game 7 like that and then do this? It’s a betrayal of trust to any fan who bought into the Melo/Andrade series organically based almost exclusively on the fact that they had good wrestling matches. You could see this coming. But it was still dumb.

Knight was wearing his vest, sunglasses and his U.S. title during the match. Andrade went for a quick pin after a back elbow and got a two-count out of it. Hayes rolled to the outside and Hayes threw Andrade into the barricade. Back in the ring, Andrade retook control with some chops and stomps. Knight was yelling at Andrade and Hayes took advantage of it until Andrade simply pushed Hayes over the top rope. Andrade ran for a splash, but Knight stopped him to start a count. As a result, Andrade flipped over Knight and landed on Melo as the show went to a commercial break.

The show returned and there was an inverted Spanish Fly off the second rope, but both guys sold the effects. Knight, at this point, had his belt and sunglasses off. Hayes and Andrade traded blows until Hayes planted Andrade with a tilt-a-whirl face-buster for a two-count. “This is awesome!” chants began from the crowd. Andrade set up for The Message, but it turned into a Destroyer from Andrade onto Hayes. Andrade hit a double-knees in a corner and got a two-count out of it. When Hayes kicked out, he threw Andrade onto Knight, which meant Knight wasn’t free to count a pin. Melo then accidentally super-kicked Knight. Andrade went for Three Amigos, but it turned into a Melo planting Andrade. Knight then threw Hayes into the commentary table and hit a BFT on Andrade. Knight did the same to Melo.

Knight walked to the outside and rang the bell and grabbed a microphone. Knight said “to hell with Game 7.” Knight said he was the United States Champion and he was the winner of Game 7. Knight’s music hit and Knight walked to the back and the match was off.

**********

– Nia Jax and Tiffany Stratton were talking backstage and Candice LaRae walked into the frame. LeRae said she’d take care of Jax’s Naomi problem and Stratton looked disgusted.

– Knight was walking backstage and walked into GM Nick Aldis, who was angry and booked Knight, Melo and Andrade in a triple threat for the U.S. title at Crown Jewel.

Naomi defeated Candice LeRae [8:53]

I was kind of hoping LeRae would somehow get the win, but it was not to be. As such, does this mean LeRae’s momentum is halted after that win last week? I hope not. Time will tell. As for this match, it was fine. It started slow and was a little clunky to start, but the women worked hard and got to the next gear by the time the finish came around, so good for them. I’d just prefer a better way to get out of this match, but those decisions are not mine to make.

LeRae had control early until Naomi hit a kick to the head. LeRae came back with a cross-body and a couple pin attempts. Naomi earned the upper hand with a kick and a Bulldog into the turnbuckle. Naomi went to the top and LeRae caught Naomi, planting her on the apron. The show then went to a commercial break.

The show returned and Naomi had control until LeRae pulled Naomi down by her hair. LeRae worked a ground-and-pound. Naomi fought back and planted LeRae to even things out. Naomi then landed a series of dropkicks and a Bulldog. Naomi went for another Bulldog, but LeRae countered and Naomi went to the outside. Indi Hartwell ran Naomi into a ring post and rolled Naomi into the ring. Bayley’s music hit and Bayley took Hartwell out. This distracted LeRae and Naomi hit her finish on LeRae for the win.

**********

– Lin-Manuel Miranda was shown in the front row and he even gave the camera the Suck It sign. Cody’s music hit and at the 9 p.m. EST turn, we went to the Cody/Gunther segment.

The Cody/Gunther face-to-face

Undoubtedly the best segment of the night. This was great. Tell me where Gunther is telling lies and I’ll tell you that you’re wrong. He has such a way of keeping his badass-ness, taking pot shots and maintaining composure in such a unique way – a way that’s even kind of impossible in today’s world of smart wrestling fans. There is absolutely nothing anyone should ever change about that character. Cody, for his part, showed up, too, and this was a major improvement from last week. Good fire. Good verbal jabs. Good stuff all around.

As Cody was about to do the third (or fourth?) “Whoa!” inside the ring, Gunther’s music hit to ruin the fun, which was great. The crowd chanted “Cody!” Gunther asked Cody what he wanted to talk about, which was funny. Cody told Gunther he wanted to know why he wanted to be Crown Jewel Champion. Gunther said it was “totally unnecessary” to mention his daughter last week, so he clearly reads this website regularly. Gunther talked about how Cody finished his story and it was all for the legacy of Dusty Rhodes.

Gunther mocked Cody for asking for the “John Cena schedule,” just to live up to other standards. Gunther said Cody just loves the dramatics. Gunther said his only reason is himself and he is the greatest pro wrestler in the company and the crowd responded in kind. Gunther said he simply just wanted to live up to himself. Gunther asked Cody what the real reason was that he wanted the Crown Jewel Championship.

Cody responded by saying that was the dumbest question he’s ever been asked in a wrestling ring. Cody said none of it exists without all the fans. Cody then led the crowd in a “Whoa!” and he even counted it in. Cody said, “you bet your ass I’m dramatic,” and he said he was proud to be dramatic. He also celebrated the Cody Crybabies. Cody talked about he was making the media rounds and he realized that what Gunther was missing was the responsibility that came with being a champion. Gunther interrupted Cody and said he knows everything about responsibility. The crowd actually cheered.

Gunther told Cody he gets the same requests Cody does, but Gunther just tells them no because he has the guts to say no. Gunther said he has the guts to say no “to all of them,” referring to the fans, who booed. Gunther said the reason Cody doesn’t say no is because his “little story is over,” and that makes Cody a “gutless champion.” Gunther said the gutless champion will always be secondary to Gunther. Cody mocked Gunther for being a “ring general” and said he sees no general because he leads no one but himself.

Cody said his whole career has been built on guts and out of nowhere dropped down and hit Gunther with a punch. Ludwig Kaiser ran in and stopped Cody and as a result, Kaiser and Gunther attacked Cody. Gunther hit a lariat on Cody, but Randy Orton ran out and chased the heels out of the ring. The crowd chanted “Randy!” Cody’s music hit the end the segment.

**********

– A video recapping last week’s Bloodline developments aired.

– A ton of women were arguing backstage. Adam Pearce, Ava and Aldis walked into the frame. Aldis said at Crown Jewel Bianca Belair & Jade Cargill will defend their tag titles against Damage CTRL, Piper Niven & Chelsea Green, and Jakara Jackson & Lash Legend in a Fatal Four-Way.

– Next week, Liv Morgan and Nia Jax will go face-to-face. Also, Cody Rhodes & Randy Orton will go up against Gunther & Ludwig Kaiser. Plus, the Fatal Four-Way for the women’s tag titles will take place on SmackDown – and not Crown Jewel.

Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) defeated #DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa) to become the No. 1 Contenders for the WWE Tag Team Championship [11:17]

This was a very good match, if not a tiny bit predictable. Perhaps the most interesting development is the inevitable dissension between Gargano and Ciampa. In a weird way, I’m hoping they aren’t pulling the trigger on a breakup yet, but at the same time, we know they both probably work better as singles acts. Either way, the tag action was great here and this was a big step up from last week’s debut match from MCMG. And good on them for it. All four guys felt like they had something to prove and the result was a very good tag team wrestling match. The Bloodline vs. MCMG should be a lot of fun.

Gargano and Shelley started the match. The two traded pin attempts and things restarted. Ciampa tagged in and before long, Sabin came in to hit Ciampa with a series of rapid-fire double-team moves. Gargano tagged in and #DIY hit their own double-team moves on Sabin. Gargano kicked Sabin’s head for a two-count. Gargano chopped Sabin and tagged in Ciampa, but Sabin tagged in Shelley. Things broke down and Ciampa was recipient of a Meet In The Middle from MCMG. Gargano hit a spear on Sabin and Ciampa worked over Shelley on the outside. Gargano and Ciampa celebrated and the show went to a commercial break.

Back from the break and Sabin was battling both Gargano and Ciampa. Ultimately, Shelley tagged in and the two worked over #DIY, complete with a wild double-team move that involved all four wrestlers. Sabin tagged in and lifted Gargano, but Gargano rolled Sabin up before kicking Sabin in the ear. Ciampa tagged in and hit an assisted Fairytale Ending. Ciampa landed a running knee on Sabin for a good near-fall. Gargano tagged in and they set up for a Meet In The Middle, but that resulted in multiple failed pin attempts. Gargano then accidentally super-kicked Ciampa. Shelley tagged in and they hit Skull & Bones to win the match.

After the match, Gargano and Ciampa argued a little on the outside of the ring. The Bloodline’s music hit and Solo Sikoa walked out with his crew as MCMG stood in the ring. The Bloodline walked to the ring and the show went to a break.

**********

– The show returned and Nick Aldis was in the ring. Aldis said the tag match would not happen tonight and the crowd chanted “OTC!” Sikoa told Brooklyn to “shut your mouth.” Sikoa said he just wanted to come out and introduce themselves to the No. 1 Contenders. The crowd booed loudly. Sikoa then did his “acknowledge me!” bit to Brooklyn and got a lot of heat for it. Sikoa welcomed MCMG to SmackDown and told MCMG to acknowledge Sikoa as their Tribal Chief. Sabin introduced MCMG and said they’d wrestle any place, anytime. Sikoa said that was funny and if they wanted to make an “impact” – which was funny – they could have the match now.

Aldis chimed in and said MCMG has given everything to the business and he’d be damned if he’d standby and let … Shelley interrupted Aldis and said Aldis knows more than anyone else what they put into the industry. Shelley said if they want a match right now, they can have it. Aldis asked MCMG if that’s what they want, they said yes and a match was made.

Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) defeated The Bloodline (Tama Tonga & Tonga Loa) to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. [7:27]

I love it. I don’t care that the Bloodline nonsense had to happen. I don’t care if it feels too soon. I don’t care if the title change is overshadowed. Sabin and Shelley deserve this and more and to see it happen in real time is almost surreal, especially if you’ve followed them all these years. Goodness, that was a lot of fun. This was a show that had a borderline terrible first hour and a borderline perfect second hour. Pro wrestling, man. There’s nothing like it.

The four guys brawled to begin the match, but Tonga and Loa dropkicked MCMG to take them down. The show went to its final commercial break. The show returned and Tonga was working over Shelley. Loa and Tonga went for a double splash, but Shelley moved and Jimmy Uso appeared to attack Sikoa and Fatu on the outside. Sikoa and Fatu quickly fought back and Roman Reigns’s music hit. Reigns then walked out and gave Fatu a Superman Punch. Reigns, Jimmy, Sikoa and Fatu fought to the back.

Sabin tagged in and Sabin worked over Tonga and hit a shotgun dropkick. The Bloodline fought back and moved the referee in the way of a splash. With the referees out, Tonga and Loa grabbed chairs. Another man in a hoodie appeared and it was Jey Uso. He took out Loga and threw him over the commentary table. Jey then hit Tonga with the chair and landed a spear on Tonga before revealing himself. MCMG set up their finisher, hit it and got the win.

After MCMG made it to the back, Jey was alone in the ring and Jimmy walked back out to the ring. Jimmy and Jey hugged hard in the middle of the ring. Roman stood in the entranceway and watched. Roman looked contemplative as the show went off the air.

The sixth bout in the ongoing series between Andrade and Hayes was officially announced for the Friday, September 27 WWE SmackDown during this week’s episode.

Andrade holds a 3-2 edge in the series after claiming the first two matches on July 19 and August 2, then the fifth bout on the September 13 SmackDown. Hayes won two in a row on August 16 and August 30 for his victories in the series.

A number one contender’s match is also set for the September 27 SmackDown.

Bayley and Naomi will go one-on-one next week to determine the number one contender to Nia Jax’s WWE Women’s Championship and will face Jax for the title at Bad Blood on October 5.

Bayley and Naomi teamed on Friday’s SmackDown in a match where the person executing the pinfall would earn the Bad Blood title shot, with both Bayley and Naomi declared the winners in a double pin over Jax. Had Bayley or Naomi taken the pinfall, they would have been forced to leave SmackDown.

The announced lineup for the Friday, September 27 WWE SmackDown:

  • Andrade vs. Carmelo Hayes (Andrade leads series 3-2)
  • Number one contender’s match, winner faces Nia Jax for the WWE Women’s Championship at Bad Blood: Bayley vs. Naomi

WWE SmackDown live results: LA Knight vs. Andrade U.S. title match

After pulling out the victory against Carmelo Hayes last week, Andrade has earned himself a United States title match on WWE SmackDown tonight.

Andrade and Hayes each had two wins against one another going into last Friday’s bout. Following Andrade’s victory, Knight appeared in the entrance way to set up his title against Andrade for tonight’s show.

Also tonight, Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns will meet in a taped segment. Set on the campus of Georgia Tech, where Roman Reigns played college football, the two recently had “an intense conversation,” and WWE cameras captured the interaction.

In a tornado tag team match, Nia Jax & Tiffany Stratton will take on Bayley & Naomi. Last week, the stipulation was set that whoever scores the fall will challenge Jax for the WWE Women’s Championship at Bad Blood. If Bayley & Naomi lose, whoever loses the fall must leave SmackDown forever.

Then, after Apollo Crews spoiled Giovanni Vinci’s debut two weeks ago, beating Vinci in three seconds, the two will have a rematch tonight.

Join us for live coverage starting at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

– A video package recapping last week’s Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, Bloodline developments opened the show.

– The Bloodline was shown entering the building earlier today and Jacob Fatu attacked the entire security staff. LA Knight’s music hit and we went to the ring for the first match.

LA Knight defeated Andrade to retain the United States Championship [17:10]

That post-match thing was odd. Knight seemed genuinely miffed, but it could have been because he slipped on the ropes a couple times as the match went to the finish. The commentary team did a good job covering up for it, but it looked like Knight didn’t feel like Andrade was blameless. Interesting. This was one of the best LA Knight matches in a long time and I have to think that has a lot to do with Andrade being the one standing opposite Knight. It’s rare you see an LA Knight match go longer than 15 minutes on television, but this one did and it worked – actually, it worked much better than I anticipated it would. Even better: No Carmelo Hayes interference. I wonder if that means he’s done with Andrade for good, for real, for real. I hope not.

Andrade stuck out his hand for a handshake to start the match and Knight shook it. Knight when for an inside cradle early and got a one-count. Both guys went for their finishers less than a minute into things, and both got out of the attempts. The show then went to a commercial break. Back from the break, the two were trading strikes inside the ring. Andrade landed a few loud chops and went to the top to hit a cross-body for a two-count. Andrade then worked a head-lock to slow things down.

Andrade ran the ropes, which eventually ended with Andrade running into an elbow from Knight. Action spilled outside and Knight slammed Andrade’s head off the commentary table repeatedly. Andrade found himself back in the ring and Knight hit a slingshot shoulder block for a two-count. The two fought on the apron and Andrade ran Knight into the ring post to take control. Andrade went to the top and actually landed a moonsault onto Knight from the corner top onto the outside. The show then went to another break.

Back from that break, Knight and Andrade collided in the middle of the ring to reset things. Andrade got to his feet first and played to the crowd, which was a mixed bag. Andrade went for a double-knees, but Knight moved and followed up with a DDT, which was good enough for a two-count. Knight stomped on Andrade in a corner, which led to a running knee from Knight. Knight hit a neck-breaker for a good near-fall. Knight lifted Andrade and put him on the top turnbuckle as the crowd chanted “This is awesome!”

Andrade elbowed Knight off the top rope and that led to the missed-moonsault-into-a-standing-moonsault spot (and it looked a lot closer to disaster than normal). Andrade then landed a double-knees in the corner, but Knight kicked out. Andrade ran at Knight, but Knight caught him and hit a powerslam, followed by an elbow from the top rope. Knight went for a BFT, but Andrade countered into a roll-up for a two-count and then hit a wild spinning back elbow for a great near-fall. The two battled on the top and Knight slipped twice, which led to an attempted dropkick from the top via Andrade, but Knight moved and hit a BFT for the win. Knight stood up and was bleeding from the eyebrow. The two had a weird exchange after the match, with Andrade wanting to shake Knight’s hand, but Knight wouldn’t open his hand. Andrade raised Knight’s arm and Knight looked angry to close the segment.

**********

– Tiffany Stratton was talking to Nia Jax backstage and she said it would be so good to never see Bayley or Naomi on SmackDown again. Jax said if Stratton loses, it might be a good idea if Stratton leaves SmackDown.

– Andrade and Melo were talking backstage and Melo said Andrade choked harder than the Kings did against the Lakers some years back (he wasn’t entirely wrong). It quickly escalated and the two had a nice backstage brawl.

The Cody Rhodes/Roman Reigns confrontation

I … I … I don’t know. This wasn’t for me. Not on a pro wrestling show. I understand it – production is great, drama is there, it looks like a movie, blah, blah, and blah. I could have done without it because I like my pro wrestling with a side of grit. Now, with that said: This was great in terms of explaining how and why these two will team together. Cody wanted Roman’s word that he would stand by him, considering they are going into battle against Roman’s family, and that was a key aspect to this story that needed to be explained. So, in that way, this worked better than a standard opening SmackDown promo segment that would have felt too normal. That said, mission accomplished. The shiny excess, though? Not for this viewer.

The walkup looked like a scene from “Love Is Blind.” A ton of black SUVs pulled up to the Georgia Tech football stadium. Reigns got out of one of them and walked to the 50-yard line. A single white car pulled into the stadium and Cody hopped out of it from the driver’s seat. Cody walked to the 50-yard line as well. Roman talked first and told Cody that everyone Cody saw was Roman’s. Reigns then followed that up by saying it’s his field and his stadium and his city. Reigns asked Cody what he has done for Roman’s city.

Cody noted how Center Stage and The Omni were in Atlanta and multiple generations of his family have bled for the city. Cody said it might be Roman’s field, but it is Cody’s home. Roman grinned and said, “That’s very good. This is your home.” Roman told Cody that he signed himself into a lose/lose situation because Cody has everything to lose and he’s dealing with people who have nothing to lose. Roman recalled all the bad things The Bloodline did to Roman and Roman said he has nothing to lose because they took everything him from. Roman said he was a man with no country.

Cody responded by saying that Roman is a chief without a tribe. Cody said they took Jimmy, his Wise Man and the Ula Falla. Cody asked Roman to take a good look around WWE because WWE has a Tribal Chief and a champion and neither of those things are Roman Reigns. Cody essentially said Roman is a shell of himself. Roman looked shook and asked Cody what he wanted. Cody said he wanted Roman’s word that Roman will have his back so Cody can have Roman’s. Roman gave Cody his word. Roman said he’d have Cody’s back, but after it’s done, Roman will take back what’s his – the Undisputed WWE Championship. Cody said it wasn’t Roman’s to take. Roman told Cody he was in his way. Cody moved and Roman said Cody was in his way … in life. Roman then walked away.

Kevin Owens was shown watching the video backstage. Byron Saxton walked up and asked Owens what he thought. Owens just walked away.

Apollo Crews defeated Giovanni Vinci [1:35]

I don’t really know that I’m a fan of whatever gimmick this is supposed to be. If anything, this is getting Crews over … right? I thought WWE did a good job of building Vinci’s debut up and making him feel like a big deal. The first loss put him in joke territory and this second loss throws him into mid-card hell. I don’t know what’s next, but you have to think he eventually gets a win. At this point, so what?

Crews’s entrance was not televised. Vinci’s entrance, meanwhile, was, indeed televised. As for the revolution … OK, sorry. Anyway, the bell rang and nobody won right away, so we didn’t get a repeat of their fist match. Instead, Vinci attacked Crews with a series of chops and slaps. Vinci worked a ground-and-pound and weirdly threw Crews into the ropes repeatedly. Vinci lifted Crews, but Crews wiggled out and rolled up Vinci for the win yet again. After the match, Vinci attacked Crews and hit a brain-buster. Vinci then jawed at Crews and left the ring.

– Saxton walked up to Owens again backstage and asked Owens what he thought. Owens said he’d rather talk about it in the ring and walked to the ring as the show went to break.

The Kevin Owens segment

There wasn’t much to this, though I do wonder where Sikoa (and for that matter, Roman) is tonight. I could do without the impromptu booking, which has been run into the ground in WWE Land, but it should be a serviceable main event. In the meantime, Owens feels like he’s spinning his wheels a bit in these random roles that aren’t necessarily random, but they aren’t necessarily fresh, either. With all the contract chatter surrounding him lately, it does make you wonder what his immediate future might look like.

Owens said he’s aware that people wonder what he thinks of the situation between Cody and Roman. Owens said he has to be honest … but then Tama Tonga’s music hit and Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa and Jacob Fatu walked out – sans Solo Sikoa. Tonga received a ton of boos and said last week, Cody and Roman embarrassed Sikoa last week and that was a big mistake. Tonga said Cody and Roman will get what’s coming to them at Bad Blood, but tonight, Owens will get what he has coming by orders of the real Tribal Chief, Solo Sikoa.

Owens invited everyone into the ring and ultimately faced off with Jacob Fatu. The Bloodline put the boots to Owens until #DIY ran out for the save, complete with a Shatter Machine on Tonga. Nick Aldis then walked out with a microphone and a bunch of security guys. The ring was filled with security and Aldis said he was sick and tired of everyone fighting each other when there isn’t a bell ringing. Aldis said he noticed there were three heels and three babyfaces and as such, a six-man tag match was booked for the main event.

– Bayley and Naomi were talking backstage and Bayley said they have a common goal of getting the belt off Nia. Naomi said when she wins, Bayley will be the first with a title opportunity.

Naomi & Bayley defeated Nia Jax & Tiffany Stratton [11:05]

Well, it appears a triple threat is coming. The tiny moment between Naomi and Bayley was fun, but outside of that, this was a pretty standard tornado tag by WWE standards. Stratton accidentally hitting a Swanton on Jax only furthers their will they/won’t they story, and that’s fine, but I’m about two weeks away from that whole thing running my patience thin. This means Jax leaves SmackDown forever, right? I’m joking, but that would create a neat wrinkle.

The match opened with the heels taking control until Naomi and Bayley came back with some splashes. The heels quickly regained the upper hand and the show went to a commercial break. Back from that break, the action spilled to the outside and Jax threw Naomi over the barricade. Jax tried to do the same to Bayley, but Bayley got out of it and pushed Jax into a Naomi kick. Bayley hit a suicide dive on Jax and Naomi landed a cross-body on Stratton on the outside.

The action returned to the ring and Stratton clotheslined Naomi. It worked until Bayley hit Stratton with a suplex and went for a pin, but Naomi broke up the pin, so the babyfaces had a moment of discord. Naomi and Bayley made up and landed a double back-drop on Jax. Jax came right back and took down Naomi before going for her finish, but Bayley came over and cut Jax off. Stratton got involved, but that only led to a stereo elbow/leg drop from Naomi and Bayley on Stratton and Jax. Naomi and Stratton were working on the top rope, but it led to an X-Factor from Naomi on Jax. Stratton then accidentally hit a Swanton on Jax.

Bayley and Naomi hit a 1-D on Stratton. All of this was enough for Jax to gain her energy back. From there, Bayley and Naomi countered something from Jax and subsequently pinned Jax at the same time. As such, they won the match simultaneously. Jax looked shocked as the show went to a commercial break.

– A Chelsea Green vignette aired and it featured Green taking the literal trash out. Green then beat up a mannequin with Michin’s face taped onto the top of it. Green was ostensibly training for a dumpster match with Michin, which was set up last week. Turns out, the match will happen in Nashville in two weeks. As for next week, Melo and Andrade will have their sixth match in the series.

– Naomi and Bayley were talking to Nick Aldis in his office. Aldis said the solution to the finish of their match will be that next week, Naomi and Bayley will face each other. The winner will take on Jax for the WWE Women’s Championship.

– Kevin Owens made his entrance for the main event, but video of #DIY being beat up backstage was shown. The Bloodline then came out and attacked Owens. From there, the Street Profits’ music hit and the Profits ran to ringside for the save. Owens landed a Swanton on everybody on the outside. It looked like Owens and the Profits would take on the responsibility of the six-man tag after a commercial break.

The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) & Kevin Owens fought The Bloodline (Jaco Fatu, Tama Tonga & Tonga Loa) to an apparent no-contest [14:49]

I’m not sure why #DIY was taken out of the match … only to have the Profits replace them … only to have #DIY run out for the save after the match … only for #DIY to quickly be dispensed. I also don’t quite know why the referee calls it all off after someone is thrown into the steps, which happens routinely in WWE every week on television. But. If you can get past all that, I suppose, this was fine. SmackDown has become extremely formulaic anymore and this six-man tag was the epitome of that. At some point, this show has to get out of its rut, but my fear is if it does actually move to three hours next year … well, that’s going to be a tough ask. For now, outside of Roman and Cody (and perhaps Andrade and Melo, though that clearly has a shelf life), SmackDown is an increasingly tough watch. Not very compelling. Not very different. Not very interesting. That said, on to next week.

Owens and Loa started the match and Owens got the better of it. Dawkins tagged in and got his strikes in before Ford tagged in and worked over Loa. Dawkins came back in and kept up the offense. Owens followed that up with a tag in and a clothesline and a two-count. Ford tagged in and stomped on Loa as the crowd chanted “OTC!” Eventually Loa was able to tag in Fatu and Fatu quickly gained control over Ford. Tonga tagged in and landed a springboard splash onto Ford. Tonga hit a sliding clothesline on Ford for a two-count. Fatu tagged back in and landed a running elbow on Ford, but missed a hip attack.

Dawkins tagged in and fired things up, hitting a leaping back elbow and hitting the rest of the Bloodline … until Dawkins ran into a super-kick from Fatu. Fatu followed it up with a moonsault and the show went to a commercial break. Back from the break, Tonga covered Dawkins for a two-count. Tonga eventually leapt at Dawkins, but Dawkins caught him and suplexed Tonga. Fatu tagged in and cut off Dawkins, whipping Dawkins into a turnbuckle. Fatu ran at Dawkins, but Dawkins countered with a leaping kick. Fatu jumped at Dawkins and Dawkins moved, ultimately getting the hot tag to Ford.

Tonga tagged in and Ford hit a series of moves, complete with a step-up knee and a standing moonsault, for a two-count. Owens tagged in and immediately ran around the ring outside of it, clotheslining everyone in the Bloodline and hitting a Frog Splash on Loa from the apron. Back in the ring, Owens hit a Cannonaball and Swanton on Tonga for a good near-fall. Owens went to the top and Tonga cut Owens off. Tonga went for a super-plex, but Owens countered with his usual counter suplex. A pin attempt was broken up via Loa. Owens hit a Stunner on Tonga, but Loa pulled Owens off Tonga and for whatever reason, the ref rang the bell to end the match.

After the match, Ford landed a flip dive on The Bloodline and pumped up the crowd. A brawl between the teams ensued. The Bloodline got the best of the babyfaces, including an attempt at a triple powerbomb on Owens … until #DIY stumbled out from the back and broke up the brawl. It didn’t quite matter because The Bloodline fought them off, too. The trio set their sights on Owens … until Cody’s music hit and Cody ran out with a chair. Cody hopped into the ring with Fatu and Fatu kicked the chair out of Cody’s hands. Cody came back, however, with a Cody Cutter on Fatu. Owens grabbed the chair and stood behind Cody. Cody turned around and it looked like Owens was going to hit Cody with the chair, but Owens dropped the chair. Cody extended his hand and Owens shook it. The two half-hugged and the show ended.

United States title match, stipulation tag team bout official for next WWE SmackDown

A United States title match is set for next week’s SmackDown.

LA Knight will defend the title against Andrade on next week’s show in Sacramento. Andrade won the best-of-five series between himself and Carmelo Hayes on Friday. After the match, Knight came out and congratulated Andrade on his win. However, he said he’ll drop Andrade on his head next week.

The two started their series back in July, with Andrade scoring the first two wins before Hayes rallied back with two wins of his own.

A tag team bout with big stipulations is also set for next week. After both Bayley and Naomi confronted Nia Jax and Tiffany Stratton on Friday’s SmackDown, Jax suggested the tag match. She also named the stipulations: Whoever pinned her or Stratton would get a title match at next month’s Bad Blood PLE. However, if Stratton or Jax pinned either Bayley or Naomi, whoever lost the fall would have to leave the SmackDown brand.

Here is the card so far for next week’s SmackDown.

  • WWE United States title: LA Knight defends against Andrade
  • Nia Jax & Tiffany Stratton vs. Bayley & Naomi – whoever pins Jax or Stratton gets a WWE Women’s title match at Bad Blood. If Jax & Stratton win, the loser must leave SmackDown

Andrade vs. Carmelo Hayes trilogy matchup set for WWE SmackDown

The rivalry between Andrade and Carmelo Hayes is set to become a trilogy.

WWE has announced that Andrade vs. Hayes III will take place on SmackDown this Friday night. In their first two meetings, Andrade has a 2-0 record. This third match comes after interference by Hayes cost Andrade a United States title number one contender’s bout against Santos Escobar last week.

“You see what happens when you take matters into your own hands? You see what happens when you don’t beg for opportunities like some people? You get exactly what you want,” Hayes said in a social media promo. “And that’s why tomorrow I got exactly what I want — and that’s Melo vs. Andrade III in Orlando.”

Andrade’s two victories against Hayes took place on the July 19 and August 2 episodes of SmackDown. The updated lineup for this Friday’s show is listed below:

WWE SmackDown (Friday, August 16) —

  • Roman Reigns appears
  • Nia Jax WWE Women’s Championship celebration hosted by Tiffany Stratton
  • WWE Tag Team title number one contender’s match: The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) vs. DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa)
  • Naomi vs. Blair Davenport
  • Kevin Owens vs. Grayson Waller
  • Andrade vs. Carmelo Hayes

Santos Escobar earns United States title match on WWE SmackDown

Santos Escobar is getting a title shot.

Escobar defeated Andrade on Friday to earn a future United States Championship match. The finish of the match had Carmelo Hayes interfere, pulling Escobar out of danger as Elektra Lopez distracted the referee. The confusion allowed Escobar to roll up Andrade for the win.

Right before the match, LA Knight came out for a United States Championship celebration after he defeated Logan Paul last weekend at SummerSlam. Escobar interrupted the celebration and said Knight winning the title was nothing more than a fleeting moment and an opening act to his own championship reign. Knight said it didn’t matter who won the number one contender’s match as everyone knows that it’s his game.

Back in June, LA Knight defeated Paul and Escobar in a three-way match to advance in the Money in the Bank ladder match. After MITB, Knight had attempted to get a title match, going as far as to getting into Logan Paul’s house. Paul eventually agreed to the match at SummerSlam, which he lost despite using brass knuckles given to him by MGK.

Andrade retains WWE Speed title, NXT’s Je’Von Evans set for contender’s tournament

Andrade is still the WWE Speed Champion after making his second title defense.

This week’s WWE Speed episode saw Andrade defeat Baron Corbin to remain the show’s champion. With 48 seconds remaining on the five-minute clock, Andrade used a crucifix pin to beat Corbin. He countered an End of Days attempt into the crucifix to get the victory.

Andrade is the second-ever WWE Speed Champion, winning the title from Ricochet last month as Ricochet was on his way out of WWE. Andrade has made title defenses against Xavier Woods and Corbin since then.

On WWE Speed next week, a new number one contender’s tournament will begin with NXT Tag Team Champion Axiom facing Joaquin Wilde. Here’s the full list of first-round matchups:

  • Axiom vs. Joaquin Wilde
  • Pete Dunne vs. Julius Creed
  • Austin Theory vs. Montez Ford
  • Je’Von Evans vs. Ashante “Thee” Adonis

Evans is one of the brightest young stars in NXT. He teamed with Axiom & Nathan Frazer last night in a loss to The Rascalz.

WWE Speed premieres on X/Twitter every Wednesday at noon Eastern time.

Logan Paul’s return set for next week’s WWE SmackDown

The United States Champion will return to WWE SmackDown on July 19 to answer LA Knight’s SummerSlam challenge.

Logan Paul’s return has officially been announced for the Friday, July 19 SmackDown, where he will presumably answer the SummerSlam challenge issued by LA Knight during this week’s episode. Knight presented a signed contract for a title match against Paul at SummerSlam during Friday’s show, with only Paul’s signature standing in the way of a US title bout for the August 3 pay-per-view in Cleveland.

A one-on-one contest has also been announced for next week’s show.

Following a backstage interaction between the two on this Friday’s episode, Andrade and Carmelo Hayes are set to square off in the ring on the July 19 SmackDown.

The bout will be the first for Hayes since taking part in the Money in the Bank ladder match on July 6, a contest he qualified for by pinning Randy Orton in a triple threat qualifier on the June 21 SmackDown.

The announced card for next week’s show:

  • United States Champion Logan Paul returns
  • Andrade vs. Carmelo Hayes
