Fenix scheduled to wrestle tonight after suffering leg injury

Update —

Big Time Wrestling on Facebook announced that Fenix would be wrestling on their show in Enfield, CT tonight.

Original story —

Yet another key match for AEW’s All Out PPV could potentially be in jeopardy as Fenix was injured in a match in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on Friday night.

Fenix & Pentagon Jr. were facing Juventud Guerrera & Teddy Hart for Big Time Wrestling when the injury happened.

Fenix superkicked Hart and then picked up Guerrera, and collapsed and grabbed his leg. He rolled out of the ring and waved for help from the back. Fenix was brought to the back. In the ring, in what was clearly an audible, Guerrera immediately pinned Pentagon, who rushed to the back to check on his brother.

Early reports that he was seriously injured and may have broken his leg were premature. He was walking on the leg, but it was weak. He was hopeful it was only a sprain and was saying that he thought he would be able to do his ladder match at All Out in Chicago.

We will update when he has it examined.

We are only eight days away from All Out, where Pentagon & Fenix are scheduled to defend their AAA Tag Team titles in a ladder match against The Young Bucks. Fenix is also scheduled for AAW in Chicago prior to AEW.

Kenny Omega now facing PAC at AEW All Out

AEW has revealed Kenny Omega’s new opponent for All Out.

With Jon Moxley off the pay-per-view, Omega is now facing PAC at All Out. Omega vs. Moxley had originally been set, but Moxley announced today that he won’t be able to wrestle at All Out because a serious case of MRSA has returned in his elbow.

This will be PAC’s debut for AEW. He was supposed to face Hangman Page at Double or Nothing, but PAC was removed from that match due to creative differences. PAC vs. Page instead took place for WrestleGate in Nottingham, England ahead of All Out.

PAC was also supposed to team with Pentagon Jr. & Fenix against Omega & The Young Bucks at Fyter Fest. Laredo Kid instead took his place in that match.

PAC lost Dragon Gate’s Open the Dream Gate Championship to Ben-K last month.

All Out will also be the first time PAC has wrestled in the United States since leaving WWE. The PPV is taking place at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois on Saturday, August 31. Here’s the updated card:

  • Chris Jericho vs. Hangman Page for the AEW World Championship
  • Kenny Omega vs. PAC
  • AAA Tag Team Champions The Lucha Bros (Pentagon Jr. & Fenix) defending against The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) in a ladder match
  • Cody Rhodes vs. Shawn Spears
  • Hikaru Shida vs. Riho
  • Darby Allin vs. Joey Janela vs. Jimmy Havoc
  • Best Friends (Trent Barreta & Chuck Taylor) vs. The Dark Order (Evil Uno & Stu Grayson) (winning team gets a first-round bye in AEW’s Tag Team title tournament)
  • Women’s Casino Battle Royale (pre-show)
  • Private Party (Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen) vs. Angelico & Jack Evans (pre-show)

Jon Moxley off AEW All Out due to ‘serious case of MRSA’ in elbow

Jon Moxley’s elbow injury will prevent him from wrestling at All Out.

On Twitter today, Moxley announced that he’ll have to miss his match against Kenny Omega at the pay-per-view because a serious case of MRSA has returned in his elbow: “I’m absolutely gutted to have to deliver this news but I’d rather it come directly from me. In a nightmare scenario, a serious case of MRSA has returned in my elbow. The timing couldn’t be worse. In this circumstance I am forced to pull out of the fight 8/31 vs Omega at All Out.”

Dave Meltzer notes that Moxley is expected to be out of action for four weeks. Moxley added that he expects to be ready to return in time for when AEW debuts on TNT on Wednesday, October 2: “I apologize to all involved, most importantly the fans. I am incredibly frustrated and pissed off. I’ll have surgery this week to remove the bursa sac in my elbow and be done with it for good. Should be a quick recovery so I will be 100% for AEW Wednesday nights on TNT.”

Moxley vs. Omega had been set up when Moxley made a surprise appearance at Double or Nothing and laid out Omega at the end of the show. Cody Rhodes tweeted that AEW will actively try to reschedule Moxley vs. Omega for down the road.

Cody also wrote that a replacement match for All Out will be announced soon.

All Out is taking place at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

Big Swole and Sadie Gibbs added to AEW Casino Battle Royale

Two more entrants have been confirmed for the women’s Casino Battle Royale at All Out.

AEW announced today that Big Swole (Aerial Monroe) and Sadie Gibbs will be taking part in the Casino Battle Royale. The match will be part of the All Out pre-show on Saturday, August 31.

Monroe is an Air Force veteran who is from Clearwater, Florida. She participated in WWE’s Mae Young Classic last year, losing to Zeuxis in the first round.

Gibbs is signed to AEW and will be having her first match for the promotion at All Out. She’s from the United Kingdom and debuted for Stardom earlier this year.

The winner of the Casino Battle Royale will advance to the match to crown the inaugural AEW Women’s Champion, which is taking place on AEW’s TNT premiere on Wednesday, October 2.

There will be 21 entrants in the Casino Battle Royale, including members of the roster and others who aren’t signed with the company. It will begin with five wrestlers in the ring, with groups of five entering every three minutes after that. The 21st wrestler will then enter on their own.

Teal Piper, Ivelisse, and Jazz have officially been announced for the battle royal, with Nyla Rose, Britt Baker, Yuka Sakazaki, Allie, and Brandi Rhodes also mentioned as being entrants.

Hikaru Shida vs. Riho added to AEW All Out

The card for All Out is now up to eight announced matches.

AEW announced today that Hikaru Shida vs. Riho is set for the pay-per-view. It’s taking place at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois on Saturday, August 31.

This will be the second time Shida has wrestled for AEW. She and Riho teamed with Ryo Mizunami at Double or Nothing and defeated Aja Kong, Yuka Sakazaki & Emi Sakura.

Riho defeated Nyla Rose and Sakazaki in a triple threat match at Fyter Fest. On the Fight for the Fallen pre-show, Riho & Britt Baker lost to Shoko Nakajima & Bea Priestley.

Here’s the updated lineup for All Out:

  • Chris Jericho vs. Hangman Page for the AEW World Championship
  • Kenny Omega vs. Jon Moxley
  • AAA Tag Team Champions The Lucha Bros (Pentagon Jr. & Fenix) defending against The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) in a ladder match
  • Cody Rhodes vs. Shawn Spears
  • Darby Allin vs. Joey Janela vs. Jimmy Havoc
  • Hikaru Shida vs. Riho
  • Best Friends (Trent Barreta & Chuck Taylor) vs. The Dark Order (Evil Uno & Stu Grayson) (winning team gets a first-round bye in AEW’s Tag Team title tournament)
  • Women’s Casino Battle Royale (pre-show)

F4W NEWSLETTER: Rey Mysterio and avoiding missed opportunity

Joseph Currier looks at Rey Mysterio’s current WWE run and the value he could still have to the company. Plus, Vinny’s TV reviews.

After three years away from the company, Mysterio made his full-time return to WWE last fall. His current run hasn’t been a failure, but this is the time when he’s freshest to WWE and the fans. That hasn’t really been capitalized on.

Mysterio won the US title from Samoa Joe at Money in the Bank, but his reign never got a chance to begin. He had to vacate the title after separating his shoulder. Wherever WWE was going with Mysterio’s son Dominick being by his side against Joe, that’s seemingly been dropped. When Mysterio returned, he was demolished by Bobby Lashley in his first match back.

Mysterio also participated in a number one contender’s battle royal last month, with Rollins winning and advancing to challenge Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. Mysterio defeated Zayn at Raw Reunion, though the segment was mostly about returning legends getting to appear. RVD, Sgt. Slaughter, The Hurricane, and Kurt Angle stopped Zayn from walking out. Mysterio then hit the 619 and a frog splash to get the win.

Raw Reunion capitalized on the nostalgia of returning wrestlers from previous eras. Mysterio appearing on the same episode as them showed how much of an opportunity WWE is missing with him. Even at 44 years old, Mysterio is such an incredible in-ring performer. He can still be one of the most marketable people on the roster and one of the wrestlers with the most mainstream appeal. He can still connect as a top babyface. He’s a Hall of Fame wrestler that still has a ton of value to the company. WWE moved on from John Cena too quickly when he should have had time left as a top star, and they shouldn’t make the same mistake with Mysterio.

Lucha Bros vs. Young Bucks ladder match added to AEW All Out

The Lucha Bros and The Young Bucks are officially set to face off in a ladder match at All Out.

At the end of this week’s Being the Elite episode, Matt & Nick Jackson accepted Pentagon Jr. & Fenix’s challenge for the ladder match. Pentagon & Fenix’s AAA Tag Team titles will be on the line.

The ladder match was set up when The Lucha Bros issued their challenge to The Young Bucks at Fight for the Fallen earlier this month. It’s being billed as “escalera de la muerte.”

The Lucha Bros and The Young Bucks have traded the AAA Tag Team titles over the last few months. Pentagon & Fenix’s current reign began when they defeated The Young Bucks at AAA Verano de Escandalo in June.

The Young Bucks defeated The Lucha Bros at Double or Nothing, then teamed with Kenny Omega to defeat Laredo Kid, Pentagon & Fenix at Fyter Fest. The Young Bucks defeated Cody & Dustin Rhodes at Fight for the Fallen, while The Lucha Bros defeated Scorpio Sky & Frankie Kazarian.

All Out is taking place at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois on Saturday, August 31. Chris Jericho will face Hangman Page to determine the first AEW World Champion. Omega vs. Jon Moxley is official, along with The Dark Order (Evil Uno & Stu Grayson) vs. Best Friends (Trent Barreta & Chuck Taylor). Cody Rhodes vs. Shawn Spears has also been set up for the show.

The team that wins the Dark Order vs. Best Friends match will get a first-round bye in AEW’s Tag Team title tournament.

Tully Blanchard agrees to multi-show deal with AEW

Tully Blanchard has joined AEW as an “exclusive advisor” to Shawn Spears.

A press release was sent out today confirming that Blanchard has entered a “multi-show agreement” with AEW.

The press release was mostly in storyline. AEW’s Tony Khan was quoted as saying “Shawn Spears’ new advisor Tully Blanchard is a legendary retired wrestler and a canny tactician known worldwide for his vicious streak and penchant for chicanery. Given the challenge that Shawn has issued to Cody for a match at ALL OUT as well as the long, bitter history between Tully and the Rhodes family, plus Shawn’s recent behavior in AEW, it appears that Tully Blanchard has a great deal of influence over Shawn’s intents and actions. This indicates that going forward Shawn Spears will be one of the most feared and unpredictable wrestlers in AEW.”

Blanchard appeared at the end of the Road to All Out video that premiered last night. He interrupted a discussion between Jim Ross and Spears and told Ross that the discussion was over.

Shawn Spears challenges Cody for AEW All Out

Shawn Spears has challenged Cody Rhodes to a match at All Out.

The first episode of The Road to All Out, which can be seen below, featured a discussion between Jim Ross and Shawn Spears. Ross asked Spears why he attacked Cody Rhodes at Fyter Fest last month with a steel chair. He explained to Ross that there are certain terms that you don’t say in the wrestling industry, and one of those terms is “a good hand”.

He went on to call Rhodes a leech, calling back to their days as a tag team in Ohio Valley Wrestling. He said that Rhodes then moved on to partners like Hardcore Holly, Ted DiBiase Jr. and Damien Sandow and then asked where they were now. He ended up challenging Cody to a match at All Out.

The discussion ended when Tully Blanchard walked in and whispered something into Spears’ ear. He then told Jim Ross that the discussion was over.

Lucha Bros challenge Young Bucks to ladder match at All Out

The feud between The Young Bucks and the Lucha Brothers is not over.

After defeating SCU (Frankie Kazairan and Scorpio Sky) at Fight for the Fallen tonight, Fenix and Pentagon Jr. took out a ladder and scaled it. They then cut a promo challenging the Young Bucks to a ladder match at All Out on August 31. The announcers pointed out the AAA World Tag Team titles would be on the line which are currently held by the Lucha Bros.

This would be the third match between the two teams. The first was back at AAA Rey de Reyes in March, when the Bucks defeated the Lucha Bros. in an impromptu match. The second was at Verano de Escandalo in June, where the Lucha Bros. regained the titles.

The Lucha Bros. will team with Laredo Kid to take on the team of the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega at TripleMania next month.

June 24, 2019 Observer Newsletter: AEW does another sell out, Stomping Grounds struggles, more

It was not unexpected that All Elite Wrestling would sell out its next major event, All Out, on 8/31 at the Sears Center in suburban Chicago, or even that it would do so instantly.

But what happened was still stunning. With only two matches announced, a Chris Jericho vs. Hangman Page match to determine the first AEW champion and the strategically announced Kenny Omega vs. Jon Moxley match released the day before tickets would go on sale with the hope of sparking a ticket rush, the 10,400 seat building sold out in 15 minutes, the length of time it took to process that number of tickets. That was neither surprising, nor the story.

The story was, according to professionals in the ticket industry, was that the show had the most activity when tickets first went on sale of any ticket to a pro wrestling event in history by a wide margin.
