WWE NXT video highlights: Pretty Deadly vs. Bron Breakker & Wes Lee

The NXT Tag Team Champions put their titles on the line against the NXT Champion and North American Champion last night.

Bron Breakker came out in the opening segment only to be interrupted by Elton Prince and Kit Wilson. The tag champs were upset that they were not given a segment to celebrate their victory over Edris Enofe & Malik Blade from last week. This brought out Wes Lee as well and eventually a title match was set for later in the night.

Pretty Deadly would retain after Carmelo Hayes interfered by pushing Lee off the turnbuckle, allowing Wilson to score the pinfall with a crucifix. Von Wagner would then attack Breakker after the match.

Also on last night’s show, the planned celebration for Mandy Rose’s one-year spent as NXT Women’s Champion was interrupted by Alba Fyre. Smoke billowed from inside the Performance Center during Toxic Attraction’s promo and where there is smoke, there is Fyre. She took out Gigi Dolin and promised to do the same to Jacy Jayne next week before taking the title from Rose in two weeks’ time.

Ava Raine and Schism took part in a sit-down interview during last night’s show as well. Raine explained what led to her joining the faction.

R-Truth was also injured last night. He began clutching his leg after a dive to the outside during his match with Grayson Waller. The match would be stopped early and Truth had to be helped to the back.

Eric Bischoff responds to Tony Khan calling him hypocritical over AEW criticisms

Eric Bischoff has responded to Tony Khan calling him “contradictory & hypocritical” regarding his criticisms of AEW.

Bischoff has been critical of AEW for frequently having “cold matches” with no build on its programming. Khan recently fired back on Bischoff’s criticism by stating that during Bischoff’s time running WCW, the company often had matches with no storyline behind them on its programming as well.

“Frankly, the person that has been the most incendiary, contradictory, and hypocritical on this entire point is Eric Bischoff,” Khan said on Busted Open last week.

Bischoff responded to Khan’s comments on an episode of his 83 Weeks released on Monday.

“There were certainly random matches that didn’t have any story in WCW, I’m not denying that but I’m also going to point out, I don’t think I ever said in any of my commentary about AEW, that I believe every match should have a story,” Bischoff said.

“When you are introducing new talent or when you have talent that you haven’t really matched up storyline-wise with an opponent yet but you want to expose that talent, you want the audience to become familiar with that talent, you want to establish that talent, sure, put people in matches that don’t really have story. But use that time, in non-storyline matches, to give us some real backstory and information about said talent.”

“My issue and my comments about AEW and the creative behind it is really a bunch of top matches that don’t have sufficient story or structure or at least a compelling one.”

“Your top matches, your A, B, C, and D storylines, that’s different. I’ve seen a lot of matches, a lot of storylines – what AEW considers a storyline- that I feel are just nothing more than excuses for a match. They are not well-crafted stories.”

“I believe in today’s competitive environment with television being what it is, that if you want to – pay attention, Tony – build and grow your audience, you are going to have to do it with well-crafted, compelling, well-structured storylines and I don’t see it. I see excuses for matches, and that’s not a storyline.”

Shinsuke Nakamura details WWE/NOAH negotiations for Great Muta match

Shinsuke Nakamura has opened up about WWE granting him permission to face The Great Muta.

It was announced on Sunday that Nakamura will face Muta at Pro Wrestling NOAH’s The New Year 2023 event on January 1 at Budokan Hall. An article in Tokyo Sports recently revealed how Nakamura was able to receive permission from WWE to do the match.

“After a disagreement at first, he persisted in negotiating with a new regime after Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon retired in July,” a translation of the article reads. “The final agreement was reached on the 26th of this month, and it seems that the tenacity has paid off.”

Nakamura mentioned in the article that the match against Muta is something he worked hard to make happen.

“It’s nothing but a miracle,” Nakamura said. “Of course, I wanted to do it. I opened a door that no one could break in. Hahaha…it’s a real ‘Forbidden Door’.”

“I think it’s really fate, and I worked hard to make it happen. I’ve fought Keiji Muto twice in the past, but this was my first encounter with Great Muta, the first and last. I definitely think that I am in the midst of the miracle of the times,” he continued.

Keiji Muto’s last match as The Great Muta will take place on January 22, 2023 at The Great Muta Final Bye-Bye show in Yokohama. He will team with Sting on the show. Muto’s retirement tour then concludes with his final match on February 21, 2023, at the Tokyo Dome.

Jimmy Uso ready for Ava Raine to ‘pop off and represent The Bloodline’

Jimmy Uso was impressed with Ava Raine’s WWE NXT debut.

Real-name Simone Johnson, the daughter of The Rock was revealed as the newest member of The Schism on Tuesday. Jimmy Uso spoke to TMZ recently about the 21-year-old’s future in the business.

“I’m ready to see what she can do. I’m ready for her to pop off and represent The Bloodline,” he said.

“We are all family. We all look out for her. She has the whole squad side on her side.”

Jimmy Uso also commented on Raine being part of The Schism faction.

“Schism throwing up the twos, uce, we throwing up the ones,” he said.

“The sky is the limit,” Jimmy continued to say of Raine. “She’s got the workhorse in her like we all do. It runs deep in the blood, and I’m excited for her future. I can’t wait to see where this takes her.”

Raine is part of the Anoaʻi family dynasty as her great-grandfather, Peter Maivia, was considered “blood brothers” with Amituana’i Anoaʻi, with their kids being considered cousins with one another.

AEW hires Tony Schiavone’s son, Matt Schiavone, as TV producer

AEW has hired Matt Schiavone as a TV producer.

The son of Tony Schiavone has worked for Fox News, the MLB Network, and Starrcast. He was responsible for building all show formats for Starrcast II, III & IV.

Matt Schiavone started with AEW last Friday at the Rampage taping from Jacksonville.

Tony Schiavone revealed the news on an episode of AEW Unrestricted released on Friday.

“We have just hired a brand new producer to help us backstage and it’s a producer who has had 15 years of network TV experience, really knows what he’s doing, and I really wrestled with even wanting him to come to work for us, and it’s my son, Matt, who will start as a producer in Jacksonville and as this thing airs, it’s already happened. He had such a good job but he, just like us, absolutely loves pro wrestling and wanted to do it,” Tony Schiavone said on the show.

Tony Schiavone also revealed that his son will be working under Sonjay Dutt.

“I’m very proud of him and maybe we can get him on to talk to us sometimes. He worked for Fox News in New York City for 15 years, as a producer there. So, you go from Fox News and news to pro-wrestling, it’s two completely different things but it’s still TV.”

Adnan Virk says Vince McMahon was cordial, blunt with WWE Raw feedback

Adnan Virk says he appreciated how direct Vince McMahon was with his feedback.

Virk was the play-by-play commentator for WWE Raw from April 12, 2021, until he was released on May 25, 2021. He appeared on the Sports Media podcast recently and spoke about his short time in the company.

“I was only there for seven weeks, but I tell ya, it was such an overwhelming experience,” Adnan said. “Obviously, I was being criticized heavily in all corners.”

He continued to say that the current Raw commentator, Kevin Patrick, offered him some advice during this time.

“He came over to me and he was like, ‘Listen, I know what you’re going through. We are not from this world.'”

“In that wrestling world, you’re not one of us, you don’t belong here. And he goes, ‘I feel that too, I’m coming from MLS and soccer, you’re coming from baseball and ESPN, so I sympathize with you. Every time I hear you calling this stuff, I’m like, man, don’t check Twitter.'”

Virk continued to talk about what it was like working with Vince McMahon.

“Vince was very cordial. He was respectful. He’s not hobnobbing in the locker room asking what I think about the [Toronto Blue] Jays but at the same time, he wasn’t screaming at me every five minutes. He does his own thing and he would be very direct, he was very blunt with his feedback. He’s not in the mood to offer pleasantries but at the same time, I appreciate a direct approach.”

WWE notes: Bray Wyatt merchandise sales, Sasha Banks, Chelsea Green

Dave Meltzer shared some WWE news and notes in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter

Bray Wyatt tops WWE merchandise sellers

Meltzer is reporting that Bray Wyatt has surpassed the Bloodline as the top merchandise seller in WWE. He also noted the success of the QR code/White Rabbit videos will lead to similar teases in the future. Meltzer noted that such tactics will be “used more often as a facet of storylines and mystery.”

There has also been talk of a potential program involving Roman Reigns and Wyatt in the future, considering how hot Wyatt is at the moment.

Sasha Banks still under WWE contract

Sasha Banks is still under contract to WWE. Meltzer wrote, “She is still under contract to WWE but there is no word on when she’ll return as there were said to be hang-ups in negotiations for a new deal.”

Banks was in Spain recently for the World CBD Awards show. She owns a new CBD brand with Kalisto/Samuray del Sol named Premier Kanndela Labs. They won the award for Best Industry Newcomer.

Sheamus getting married

The Bloodline recently attacked Sheamus, injuring his arm and seemingly writing him off of television for a while. This was likely done as a way to explain Sheamus’ absence from television as he takes time off to get married. His fiance, Isabella Revilla, has been posting to Instagram about the upcoming wedding.

Chelsea Green is possibly WWE-bound

According to PW Insider, Chelsea Green is done with Impact Wrestling. She filmed an “exit vignette” at the last set of tapings and many are under the impression she is headed back to WWE.

Green signed with WWE in 2018 and wrestled a couple of matches on the main roster in late 2019 and early 2020, including the 2020 Royal Rumble. She broke her wrist during a match on the November 13, 2020 edition of SmackDown and was eventually released on April 15, 2021.

Chris Jericho, other ‘key top names’ unwilling to work with CM Punk in AEW

According to Dave Meltzer, several top stars in AEW stated that they are not willing to work with CM Punk.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer reported that the feeling backstage is that Punk will not be back with the company.

“A few names were mentioned with Chris Jericho being the name mentioned most but that many, if not most, of the key top names were saying that they wouldn’t work with him,” Meltzer wrote.

From the WON:

Another top star in AEW said, “Punk won’t be back. His value on screen isn’t one percent worth the hassle and black cloud he causes backstage.”

Fightful Select reported that Jericho confronted Punk backstage at All Out following the media scrum and altercation with Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks, reportedly telling Punk he was “a cancer to the locker room and a detriment to the company.”

Meltzer reported recently that AEW is in negotiations with Punk over a buyout of his contract with a holdup being the length of a non-compete clause.

On Wednesday, Wrestling Inc.’s Nick Hausman reported that those from Punk’s camp said Punk’s dog Larry was injured during the backstage altercation. Larry was said to have been hit in the face by the locker room door when it was “kicked in” by the Young Bucks. At a veterinarian appointment a few days later, Larry had to have two teeth removed.

However, the story is being denied by those from The Elite’s camp.

From the WON:

“A completely made up story,” said one person regarding the story. “He’s (Punk) losing (in the investigation results) and is desperate. There was a multiple weeks long investigation and this was oddly not discovered? Hmm. Also, it’s so happened to be mentioned the moment there was news about (the Bucks & Omega) possibly coming back? It’s insane that people would even humor this.”

“The dog story is a complete lie,” said a neutral party who was in the locker room seconds after the incident occurred. “When the altercation was happening Punk was a total psycho.”

“Kenny picked the dog up to save him from being hurt and gave him to Megha. Megha was holding the dog screaming at Punk to stop. Punk didn’t even register that his `baby’ was being held by a stranger in the middle of a fight. It didn’t stop him one bit.”

Laredo Kid stable and improving after emergency surgery

Laredo Kid is recovering in hospital following emergency surgery.

The 35-year-old luchador was injured on Sunday during a match with Vikingo in Monterrey. Although he was in pain, Laredo took pictures with fans after the show before eventually being taken to hospital. He then underwent emergency surgery to repair torn intestines.

“Laredo Kid’s Instagram story was updated with a message saying he’s stable and improving, with signs his operation went well,” wrote LuchaBlog on Twitter. “He’ll get to go home in a couple of days if everything goes well.”

Promoter Ishaan Idnani-Ramos spoke to the Laredo Morning Times earlier this week about Laredo’s injury.

“Right now, he was just operated on, and basically all we know now is that he is stable,” Idnani-Ramos said. “However, what happened was a rupture in his intestines. As of right now, he is OK, but we don’t know how this will affect him as for his upcoming bookings. But right now he is OK.”

“He is really grateful for all that have reached out and sent him positive vibes and prayers and things like that,” he continued.

Sami Zayn ‘past the point of trying to predict’ where WWE Bloodline angle goes

Sami Zayn says the audience’s reaction to his angle with the Bloodline has changed where the story is headed.

Zayn spoke with MIrror UK recently and noted that the original plan was for him and the Bloodline to have some on-screen interactions only “every now and again.” Now he says the angle is only “scratching the surface” of where it can go.

“This is one of the more filled-out, long-term stories I’ve ever been a part of, and it’s long, even by WWE standards. Usually, we might do two or three-month stories, but I’ve been aligned with The Bloodline in some respects since April and we’re still only kind of scratching the surface as to where this is going to go,” Zayn said.

“The initial idea was just to have some on-screen interactions every now and again because it made sense as the self-proclaimed locker room leader I should have a good rapport with the Head of the Table. So we were kind of cooking up that idea,” he continued.

Zayn would say, however, that he was confident that the dynamic between him and the Bloodline would be successful.

“On some level, I knew that when you add the lightness that my character brings to kind of the seriousness and the star power that they bring that it was gonna light the whole thing up. That was the goal.”

He continued to say that the audience’s reaction to the angle changed the direction the story is taking. Zayn said his on-screen interactions with Jey Uso are an example of this.

“But one of the things I’m realizing is with live audiences these stories tend to take a life of their own, and you kind of don’t know where they’re going to go and that’s actually what’s exciting about it.”

“For example, the dynamic between Jey and myself? I don’t know that it was ever meant to be like this but now you’re starting to get people guessing what’s Jey going to do and where is it going for him.”

“I’m past the point of trying to predict what the end game is. But I think at this point, we have such a level of investment that whatever happens, I think fans are going to just be there along for the ride. It’s been really a lot of fun and seeing how much the fans have been loving it has been really rewarding.”

Zayn also spoke with BT Sports recently and said that the segment where Roman Reigns gifted him the Honorary Uce t-shirt is something he hopes fans will remember for a long time.

“It’s probably the best in-ring segment I’ve ever done,” Zayn said. “I hope people will remember that moment for years to come”
