Adnan Virk says Vince McMahon was cordial, blunt with WWE Raw feedback

Adnan Virk says he appreciated how direct Vince McMahon was with his feedback.

Virk was the play-by-play commentator for WWE Raw from April 12, 2021, until he was released on May 25, 2021. He appeared on the Sports Media podcast recently and spoke about his short time in the company.

“I was only there for seven weeks, but I tell ya, it was such an overwhelming experience,” Adnan said. “Obviously, I was being criticized heavily in all corners.”

He continued to say that the current Raw commentator, Kevin Patrick, offered him some advice during this time.

“He came over to me and he was like, ‘Listen, I know what you’re going through. We are not from this world.'”

“In that wrestling world, you’re not one of us, you don’t belong here. And he goes, ‘I feel that too, I’m coming from MLS and soccer, you’re coming from baseball and ESPN, so I sympathize with you. Every time I hear you calling this stuff, I’m like, man, don’t check Twitter.'”

Virk continued to talk about what it was like working with Vince McMahon.

“Vince was very cordial. He was respectful. He’s not hobnobbing in the locker room asking what I think about the [Toronto Blue] Jays but at the same time, he wasn’t screaming at me every five minutes. He does his own thing and he would be very direct, he was very blunt with his feedback. He’s not in the mood to offer pleasantries but at the same time, I appreciate a direct approach.”

Adnan Virk felt like ‘weakest link’ on WWE Raw, wasn’t given training

Adnan Virk recently spoke with Peter Klein of Couch Potato Diary about his short stay in WWE.

Although he mostly spoke positive about his time with the company, he noted that they “didn’t give me any training” and that some people thought that was “unfair.” He pointed out that while other sports don’t throw people into the fire like that, he ultimately recognized “that’s the way WWE does things so no excuses. That’s my fault that I wasn’t good enough.”

Virk and WWE parted ways in May, less than two months after he started as the lead commentator on Raw. MMA commentator Jimmy Smith, also new to WWE and pro wrestling announcing, replaced him.

Virk also spoke about his relationship with Vince McMahon, noting that he didn’t meet the WWE chairman right away which he had noted in the past.

“It’s not like I met with Vince before my first show. I literally was just prepping on my own, doing my best, and Michael Cole was helping out. My first show was April 12. I didn’t meet Vince. I heard his voice in my ear at one point and he was giving some direction during the show. I met him after the second show. He summoned me in. I met him. He was very polite and very respectful and he basically just gave really good feedback. He went through everything….very detailed. At the end, he said, ‘You’re doing a good job. Best of luck.'”

There was an struggle for Virk to adapt to the wrestling commentary style which he attributed to not learning the “moves and mechanics.” Virk also noted that he was used to other sports commentary where he would receive notes on each athlete and their stats.

It was also made very clear by Virk that he couldn’t do the 52-week schedule, noting that he “really didn’t like” the travel aspect of the job.

Although he praised fellow commentators Byron Saxton and Corey Graves, he said he always felt like the weakest link.

“Everyone there is awesome. Corey Graves is phenomenal. I think he’s a huge talent. I think Byron Saxton is a huge talent. You never want to be in a situation where you’re the weakest link and I knew I was. That’s never a good feeling to have. Those guys were such good teammates because it’s like a baseball team. ‘We know you need some help, we’re here to help you out. You’re new, just lean on us and we’re good to go’ which was so generous of them.”

WWE, Adnan Virk ‘mutually agree to part ways’

This story was updated at 1:55 PM Eastern.

Adnan Virk’s WWE on-air tenure is over after less than two months as the company announced Tuesday that they and Virk “have mutually agreed to part ways.”

“WWE thanks Adnan for his work,” the brief statement read. In a tweet, Virk thanked WWE, Corey Graves and Byron Saxton and said, “The weekly travel along with my other jobs was a grind for me and my family. “

Virk was hired in April as the new lead announcer of WWE Raw despite having no previous experience in wrestling. A former Nick Khan client while the WWE president was at CAA, Virk had signed a multi-year deal and started on the April 12th Raw alongside Graves and Saxton.

It’s unknown who will replace Virk on the announce desk. He had replaced senior manager of on-air talent Tom Phillips who was moved to 205 Live and overseeing “special projects for WWE’s programming on Peacock and at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando.”

Virk was a Michael Cole hire after a mid-February audition that didn’t directly involve Vince McMahon. He approved after reviewing audition tapes with Khan and Cole after the audition and didn’t actually meet Virk until after his second night on Raw.

Virk has several other media jobs including with MLB Network, NHL Network, DAZN, and several podcasts he hosts.

New WWE Raw commentator Adnan Virk has now met Vince McMahon.

During an appearance on Sportsnet 960’s Boomer In The Morning after making his WWE commentary debut, Virk said he had yet to meet the WWE chairman. But on this week’s edition of the Sports Illustrated Media Podcast, Virk revealed that he met McMahon after his second show on the job this Monday.

“I met him after the second show and he was great,” Virk told host Jimmy Traina. “He was really supportive. He gave good feedback.”

Traina then asked Virk if McMahon is in his headset during Raw.

“I would say he’s giving real-time feedback. I definitely know what he’s feeling,” Virk said. “It’s interesting — when you’re there, as a lifelong fan, there’s so much that goes through your mind when you see Vince McMahon. Obviously, you think of him [and] what he’s done on the air. But then off the air, I was telling my friends, this is like one of the great American success stories ever. If you think back like how he bet on himself the first WrestleMania. The fact what this has grown into — this is a global entity. It’s kind of remarkable. As I was talking to him, it’s tough not to just think about all that he’s accomplished. It’s amazing.”

Virk made his WWE commentary debut on the Raw after WrestleMania 37. Virk is the new lead play-by-play voice of Raw, with Corey Graves and Byron Saxton calling the show with him.

Virk, a sportscaster who also works for the MLB Network, NHL Network, and DAZN, auditioned for WWE this February and was later hired for the job. A handful of other broadcasters were also interviewed.

WWE president and chief revenue officer Nick Khan is Virk’s former agent.

WWE Raw announcer Adnan Virk has yet to meet Vince McMahon

New WWE Raw lead announcer Adnan Virk said on a radio show Thursday that he has yet to meet Vince McMahon.

During a regular spot on “Boomer In The Morning” on Canadian sports radio’s SN960, Virk said he didn’t meet the chairman during WrestleMania weekend or Monday when he made his debut.

He had previously said he didn’t meet McMahon during his audition, but that president Nick Khan and Michael Cole both vouched for him as the group watched audition tapes. During the Thursday appearance, he said McMahon didn’t have any idea who he was going into the audition, but liked his voice and presentation so he went with Khan and Cole’s recommendation.

He’s said he is sure McMahon was taking notes for how he can improve and joked that when he does meet McMahon, he wants to talk about Demolition.

Virk joked about making the rookie mistake of leaving his phone on the announce table during Monday’s show and it getting shattered during the main event during a spot through the table.

In talking about the audition, he said Cole told him his look and his height was good as it would make the talent look bigger which McMahon loves. At 5’8″, Virk joked that’s the first time he has ever been told that’s a positive.

MLB Network had to sign off on Virk moving ahead with WWE and that he couldn’t say no to the opportunity. He was contacted in late-2020 as WWE was interested in bringing on a sportscaster. He hadn’t been watching WWE on a weekly basis, but started in January and studied like he would for calling a hockey game, getting information from WWE’s website. His audition was in early-February, a process he said was “amazing.”

WWE reveals changes to Raw commentary team

WWE has confirmed that a new-look Raw commentary team will debut on tonight’s post-WrestleMania 37 episode of the show.

Sportscaster Adnan Virk has joined WWE and will be the new lead play-by-play voice of Raw starting tonight. Corey Graves and Byron Saxton will join Virk on the Raw commentary team.

Tom Phillips, Samoa Joe, and Saxton had formerly been the Raw commentary team. WWE notes that Phillips will become the new host of 205 Live and will “oversee special projects for WWE’s programming on Peacock and at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando.” Phillips will also continue in his role as senior manager of on air talent.

Joe remains part of the WWE talent roster.

The Athletic reports that Virk has signed a multi-year deal with WWE. Their article on Virk signing with WWE notes that he was recommended to the company after Cole called television agent Matt Olson of CAA (Creative Artists Agency) looking to see if he had any clients that would be interested in working in WWE broadcasting. Virk had an audition for WWE in February and WWE also interviewed a handful of other broadcasters. In mid-March, WWE decided to hire Virk.

“I’m elated to be joining the premier sports-entertainment company in my new role with WWE,” said Virk.  “As a kid who grew up idolizing WWE Hall of Famers like Bret Hart and Ric Flair, the opportunity to call modern legends like Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley, Randy Orton, Charlotte Flair and so many others alongside Corey Graves and Byron Saxton is truly humbling.”

Virk will continue in his role for the MLB Network this season, along with hosting his GM Shuffle with Michael Lombardi and Cinephile podcasts. Virk formerly worked for ESPN but was fired in 2019 for leaking information to the media about the company.

WWE president and chief revenue officer Nick Khan was formerly Virk’s agent.

Report: Adnan Virk replacing Tom Phillips on WWE Raw

The WWE Raw commentary booth will be changing once again as sports broadcaster and personality Adnan Virk is reportedly replacing Tom Phillips as lead commentator starting this Monday.

The news was first reported by Wrestling Inc. and confirmed by Mat Men’s Andrew Zarian. Dave Meltzer was unable to confirm as of Saturday night.

Virk has a tie to WWE President Nick Khan as he was Virk’s agent when he worked with CAA.

Zarian added that Virk, Corey Graves and Byron Saxton will make up the new Raw announce team. It’s unknown if that would mean Samoa Joe would head to SmackDown to replace Graves who is currently on the commentary team with Michael Cole.

The Canadian-born Virk made headlines in 2019 for being fired by ESPN for reportedly leaking information to the media about the company. He has since moved on to work for MLB Network, NHL Network, DAZN, and his own podcast talking about movies that is now part of Dan LeBatard and John Skipper’s new media entity.

If the news is accurate, it’s unknown what the future will hold for 31-year-old Phillips who has been with WWE since 2012. He has been the lead announcer on Raw, SmackDown, NXT, NXT UK, Superstars and Main Event in his tenure.

This would make the second change in personnel on Raw as Charly Caruso recently departed for ESPN following reports of backstage issues in WWE. She was replaced by Kevin Egan (Kevin Patrick).
