Penta set to defend WWE Intercontinental title in AAA

Penta is now confirmed to defend his WWE Intercontinental Championship in AAA.

In the main-event segment of the AAA Rey de Reyes third week on Saturday, March 28, fans witnessed El Hijo del Vikingo address his loss against Dominik Mysterio, before calling out Penta.

Vikingo claimed that he had a new goal in mind and wanted Penta and his WWE Intercontinental Championship. Immediately, Penta would come out to the ring and confront Vikingo.

The two then engaged in a war of words before Penta accepted Vikingo’s title challenge. Penta is now scheduled to defend his WWE Intercontinental title at the upcoming AAA show in Mexico City on April 11. This will mark the first time the WWE Intercontinental title is defended in AAA.

The April 11 AAA show will also feature Lady Flammer’s longest-reigning Reina de Reinas championship celebration. She is now the longest-reigning Reina de Reinas champion in AAA’s history.

Penta wins Intercontinental title on WWE Raw

A new Intercontinental Champion has been crowned.

Penta defeated Dominik Mysterio on Monday to win the title for the first time. The finish had Mysterio posting Penta and asking his Judgement Day stablemates Finn Balor and JD McDonagh to give him the bell hammer at ringside. McDonagh went to get the hammer but Balor stopped him, saying this was something Mysterio needed to do on his own. Penta then took out both with a dive, dodged a 619 attempt by Mysterio back in the ring, then laid out Mysterio with the Mexican destroyer for the win.

Mysterio had been champion since Survivor Series, defeating John Cena. Aside from Cena’s short reign with the title, Mysterio had been champion dating back to last year’s WrestleMania.

Penta defeated El Grande Americano to earn a future title match last month. On tonight’s show, Mysterio asked Balor and McDonagh if they would be out there for him. McDonagh said yes, but Balor was hesitant, saying he thought this was something that Mysterio had to do on his own. Mysterio replied saying he only wanted them out there to celebrate with him after he retained the title. It was only then that Balor agreed to be at ringside.

Shortly before the match, the Judgment Day ran into one of WWE’s newest stars, Danhausen. The meeting didn’t go down well, leading Danhausen to put a curse on Mysterio.

Intercontinental title match added to WWE Backlash

A new match has been added to Saturday’s WWE Backlash event, and the Intercontinental Championship will be on the line.

IC Champion Dominik Mysterio will defend his title against Penta at Backlash on Saturday, May 10 in St. Louis. The new match for Saturday was announced during Monday’s WWE Raw.

Mysterio won the title in a four-way match at WrestleMania 41 also involving Penta. Mysterio retained the title in his first defense against Penta on the Raw after WrestleMania after interference from JD McDonagh. Penta then defeated McDonagh on this week’s Raw to set up the title bout.

Five matches are official for Backlash. The two-hour pre-show begins at 5 p.m. Eastern time, with the main card kicking off at 7 p.m. Eastern.

The duo first had an in-ring promo battle that ended with Uso hitting Breakker with a spear. After the show’s main event, Uso tried to run in to save Damian Priest from a beatdown at the hands of The Judgment Day, but Breakker cut Uso off with a spear of his own.

Also announced for next week’s Raw, Drew McIntyre will return to the show to respond to CM Punk’s comments on this week’s show. The two are set to square off in a Hell in a Cell match at Bad Blood on October 5.

Two-out-of-three falls Intercontinental title match official for next WWE Raw

A SummerSlam rematch is set for next week’s Raw.

On this week’s show, Sami Zayn was despondent backstage over his loss against Bron Breakker on Saturday. Jey Uso attempted to cheer him up, saying he knew he’d get his title back in a rematch. Zayn then revealed he already went to Adam Pearce and got the rematch for next week. The graphic for the next Raw announced it would be a two-out-of-three falls match.

Breakker defeated Zayn at SummerSlam to win the Intercontinental title for the first time, ending Zayn’s reign that started at WrestleMania 40.

Also set for next week is Damage CTRL (IYO SKY & Kairi Sane) taking on Zoey Stark & Shayna Baszler in a match that will determine the next contenders for the WWE Women’s Tag Team titles. During Monday’s show, Damage CTRL came out and attacked the trio of Sonya Deville, Stark, and Baszler. The latter trio responded by taking out Dakota Kai backstage, injuring her knee. When Deville came out for her match against Kai, SKY took her place, scoring the win for Damage CTRL.

Here is the lineup for next week’s Raw:

  • Two out of three falls match for WWE Intercontinental title: Bron Breakker defends against Sami Zayn
  • Number one contender’s match for WWE Women’s Tag Team titles: Damage CTRL (IYO SKY and Kairi Sane) vs. Shayna Baszler & Zoey Stark

Bron Breakker wins Intercontinental title at WWE SummerSlam

Bron Breakker did it on his second try.

Breakker captured the Intercontinental title from Sami Zayn at SummerSlam. The match only lasted about five minutes, with Zayn gaining control early after dodging a spear, sending Breakker into the turnbuckle. However Breakker bounced back and hit two spears, winning the title for the first time.

This ends Zayn’s run with the title after 119 days, defeating Gunther at WrestleMania 40 and ending his own historic reign with the title after 666 days. Gunther had been the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion.

Breakker’s father Rick and uncle Scott Steiner, as well as Diamond Dallas Page, were seen in the crowd celebrating following his win.

After failing to win the title at Money in the Bank last month, Breakker at first acted like he had no reason to deserve a rematch. However, that turned out to be a ruse as Breakker jumped Zayn following a confrontation on Raw, indicating he wasn’t done. On the July 22 edition of Raw, Breakker became number one contender again after defeating Ilja Dragunov.

Sami Zayn vs. Bron Breakker Intercontinental title match set for WWE SummerSlam

Bron Breakker is getting another Intercontinental title match.

Breakker defeated Ilja Draungov on Monday’s Raw to become the new number one contender for the title, earning a title match against Sami Zayn for SummerSlam on August 3. The finish had Dragunov attempting a strike off the apron, but Breakker countered with a spear in mid-air. After checking on Dragunov, the referee stopped the match and awarded the bout to Breakker.

The very end of Raw saw Breakker spear Zayn after he and Jey Uso defeated World Tag Team Champions Finn Balor & JD McDonagh.

After losing to Zayn at Money in the Bank, Breakker has continued to seek another title match. On last week’s Raw, he attacked both Dragunov and Zayn during their title match, ending the bout prematurely.

It was also announced on Raw that music star Jelly Roll will be performing at SummerSlam. An exchange between Jelly Roll and Triple H on X last week teased a possible appearance.

Intercontinental title match added to WWE Clash at the Castle

Chad Gable is getting another Intercontinental title shot.

On Raw, Sami Zayn was in the ring when Maxxine Dupri, Akira Tozawa, and Otis came to the ring. Dupri read a note from Gable saying that he wouldn’t be there to confront Zayn and proceeded to ridicule the rest of Alpha Academy. After Gable mentioned he wanted another Intercontinental title match, Zayn agreed to defend the title against Gable at Clash at the Castle on June 15 if it meant ending the feud once and for all.

After Zayn accepted Gable’s challenge, Gable jumped him from behind. Zayn managed a comeback but during the brawl accidently hit the ropes, causing Dupri and Tozawa to fall off the apron and to the floor. Otis, conflicted, eventually blamed Zayn for the accident and laid him out with a forward slam.

Later backstage, Gable praised the rest of Alpha Academy for their work, ignoring that Tozawa and Dupri were hurt from the accident. Gable told Otis that he was proud of him and they would win the Intercontinental title together.

Liv Morgan confronted Lynch on Monday, asking when she would get the title match Lynch had promised last week after Morgan defeated Nia Jax. WOR Video: Gunther set to make history as longest-reigning IC Champion

Gunther has now made history, becoming the longest-reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion of all time.

By defeating Chad Gable on Monday’s Raw, Gunther is now set to break The Honky Tonk Man’s 35 year record. Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer discussed the development on Wrestling Observer Radio Tuesday morning.

“I was surprised it lasted this long,” Meltzer said regarding the Honky Tonk Man’s reign. “It was inevitable that they’d find somebody. Gunther’s done a great job.”

Both had praise for the main event, which Meltzer called “a super match” and Alvarez saying that it was “awesome”. Despite a valiant fight, Gable came up short, losing after being laid out with a sleeper suplex, a powerbomb, and a clothesline. A young member of Gable’s family at ringside was shown visibly upset over Gable’s loss.

“I wasn’t a fan of focusing on her,” Meltzer said. “She was there for that reason. She was pretty young. If you’re older and a really good actress you can pull that off, that’s awesome. She had that traumatized thing…I wasn’t comfortable with that at all.”

With Gable’s loss, one has to wonder where he’ll go from here.

“Usually, historically, it’s not a good pattern,” Meltzer said.
