WWE Backlash review: Smoke and mirrors

John Cena and Randy Orton met one last time (probably) on Saturday.

It started out relatively fine, some good back and forth, somewhat mechanical in nature but perfectly alright. The crowd was totally into hometown hero Orton even though most probably knew he wasn’t winning. Then we got the dreaded first ref bump of the match. Cena went through the new announce table that doesn’t do a good job of breaking. Another ref bump. Then Cena went through another table.

They wind back up in the ring with another ref who also gets taken out. For some reason this, somehow, causes SmackDown GM Nick Aldis and a bunch of former wrestler agents to come out and check on this one referee. Nevermind another referee was taken out earlier and was still laying on the floor, this is the referee they’re concerned about. Orton proceeded to lay everyone out one by one until it was just him and Cena. But then R-Truth came out to do the idiot shitck, he was taken out. Cena recovered just in the nick of time to low blow Orton then strike with the WWE Championship for the victory.

This was significantly better than Cena’s WrestleMania match, but geez Louise it was way too overbooked. Someone thought of doing THREE ref bumps in this match when one probably would have been fine. By the time of the third ref bump I was begging for this to end, and thankfully not long after it did. Cena clearly can’t go at the same level as other main event WWE stars so doing smoke and mirrors is fine. I would prefer he do it for the rest of the year. Just, please, do a finish that doesn’t suck.

What’s next for Cena? R-Truth. Yes, during the press conference Cena took out Truth and put him through a table. Remember when Triple H was winning the perception wars against AEW handily just a few months ago? Yeah, that seems to be running out fast.

Backlash overall was an easy show to watch, two in a half hours of mostly good wrestling padded with a lot of commercials and highlight videos and talking heads. I think there’s a happy medium between this and AEW’s five-hour twelve match format, but that’s just me.

Here’s the rest of the show:

  • The four-way that opened the show was very good and probably the best match on the show overall, right next to Lynch/Valkyria. Very intense, a lot of cool spots and it helped that the crowd, which was hot all night, was totally into it. Based on the giant chokeslam spot at the end Drew McIntyre and Damian Priest are probably having one more big match, perhaps in Saudi Arabia as long as McIntyre is okay.
  • Dominik Mysterio defeated Penta to retain the IC title in a good match. Mysterio did some cool stuff like a suicide dive into a DDT that looked very clean. The finish was a backdrop to El Grande Americano running in and interfering yet again, causing another loss for a luchador. I’m kinda ready to get to the part where Americano loses or gets unmasked because it seems like they’re too into the heat building part. Maybe Worlds Collide?
  • Becky Lynch and Lyra Valkyria also had a very good match, with Lyra retaining the title in somewhat of a surprise. These two have terrific chemistry with one another and I think this will be a feud that gets over Valkyria, who is very good but needs something more here on the main roster level. The finish came out of nowhere, but Lynch’s beatdown afterwards clearly implies this is just the start of what will be a long storyline involving Valkyria, Lynch, and eventually Bayley.
  • Gunther mostly destroyed Pat McAfee in a match that was perfectly fine. People got into McAfee big time and absolutely lost it when Cole took off his headset to help. But I have to say, McAfee’s offense looked so ineffective at times, particularly towards the end of the match as he’s throwing punches that did not look good at all, like Shane McMahon-level. Still, can’t complain too much about a match that the crowd enjoyed. I wonder what the direction is for Gunther moving forward…

John Cena attacks R-Truth during WWE Backlash press conference

The abbreviated press conference that took place after Backlash ended with an angle.

As Triple H was answering a question about celebrity usage in the company, John Cena interrupted and took over the press conference, saying he was going to commit to answering questions after previously refusing to do so in previously. As he was about to answer the first question, R-Truth interrupted and congratulated Cena, saying he was proud of him even if people were saying he sucked and couldn’t wrestle.

Cena got up and calmly told R-Truth if he said another word he would get laid out. R-Truth tried to explain but Cena grabbed R-Truth and gave him an AA through the table, ending the segment.

In recent weeks, R-Truth has been defending his “childhood hero” Cena despite Jimmy Uso and others being skeptical. Truth was also part of the finish to Backlash, coming out to prevent Orton from getting the win. Truth’s distraction allowed Cena to low blow Orton and bash him with the WWE title, allowing him to remain champion.

Only two people took questions from the media following Backlash: Jacob Fatu and Triple H. During his portion of the conference, Triple H said that Drew McIntyre was “a little banged up” but fine following his United States title match. He also said that John Cena and Randy Orton’s careers were very important to WWE and is proud of the stars they’ve become, and told the press that he considered Logan Paul a regular as opposed to a part-time celebrity.

Gunther defeats Pat McAfee at WWE Backlash

Pat McAfee gave it his all, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Gunther.

The Ring General submitted McAfee at WWE Backlash with a rear naked choke. McAfee for most of the match took a beating from Gunther, taking multiple chops to the chest and was put in several submissions, including a Boston crab. Michael Cole on commentary repeatedly pleaded with Gunther to go for the cover and end the match, but the former World Champion refused to finish off McAfee.

Cole eventually left commentary and confronted Gunther in the ring. Gunther responded by attempting to powerbomb Cole, but McAfee made the save as Cole escaped. McAfee countered with a sleeper hold of his own, but Gunther powered out and hit McAfee with a lariat. Gunther then applied the rear naked choke. McAfee struggled and got back up on his feet, but collapsed and eventually passed out, giving the match to Gunther.

After the match, Cole helped McAfee up on his feet as they stared at Gunther, who seemed to acknowledge McAfee for his efforts before leaving the ring.

Potential WWE Backlash Spoiler: Debut planned for the show

A debut is “planned” for WWE Backlash tonight, according to a new report from Fightful Select ahead of the Premium Live Event. The Fightful Select Patreon subscription service noted that former New Japan Pro Wrestling star Jeff Cobb is planned for the show tonight.

“Jeff Cobb has absolutely been discussed for WWE Backlash. As of Friday he was planned for the show” it was revealed in an early scoops thread for the show tonight. It was also noted that “Cobb had been discussed for involvement with a Bloodline-related story at one point.”

Jeff Cobb WWE Debut

It is not currently confirmed that Jeff Cobb will be making his WWE debut tonight, but it does appear as though that is the working plan. It has also not been made public exactly how he may be making his debut for the company, although some sort of interference in the US Title Fatal Four Way would make sense, as Bloodline member Jacob Fatu is of course the reigning champion.

Cobb’s final match in NJPW took place on April 19, where he faced Hiroshi Tanahashi during the Road to Wrestling Dontaku tour. After the bout, Cobb expressed gratitude to NJPW, his United Empire stablemates, and the fans, marking the end of his nearly eight-year tenure with the promotion.

WWE Backlash Match Order Leaked: Opener ‘confirmed’

The match order for tonight’s WWE Backlash card appears to have been leaked ahead of time. According to Cory Hays of Bodyslam.net and PWN, Dominik Mysterio vs Penta for the Intercontinental Championship is set to open the night and John Cena vs Randy Orton will be the closer.

It’s not a shock to see Cena and Orton in the main event, but the Intercontinental Championship match opening may well be a surprise to some. The Women’s IC Title is reportedly set to be in the penultimate spot of the night, with Becky Lynch challenging Lyra Valkyria for the recently established title.

WWE Backlash Preview: What’s happening tonight

WWE Backlash 2025 will be taking place tonight from the Enterprise Center in St Louis, Missouri. The main event of the card will see John Cena face Randy Orton for the final time in their long careers. While Backlash has been a bit of a throwaway card in recent years, there’s a chance that the five matches set for tonight’s PLE could actually make for a decent night. Here’s our preview for tonight’s action:

Main Event: John Cena vs. Randy Orton – Undisputed WWE Championship

John Cena’s heel turn and retirement tour has been pretty lackluster so far, but this match against Orton could help to heat it up a bit. This is being billed as a Last Time Ever match, which while you can’t guarantee that’s actually the case (twice in a lifetime anyone?), their history and the dynamic of a heel Cena and face Orton could actually make this quite the spectacle.

Women’s Intercontinental Championship: Lyra Valkyria (c) vs. Becky Lynch

After returning at WrestleMania 41, winning the Women’s Tag Team Championships, losing them the next night and then turning heel, Becky Lynch will be getting a shot at Lyra Valkyria’s Intercontinental Title. There’s already history in NXT between these two women, and if this is given some time then it could well end up being one of the best matches on the card. It’s worth noting that on this 5 match announced card this will be the only women’s match tonight.

Intercontinental Championship: Dominik Mysterio (c) vs. Penta

Dominik Mysterio puts his own Intercontinental Championship on the line tonight against former AEW star Penta. Mysterio won the belt at WrestleMania 41 to a rapturous response from the crowd, so there’s a chance he’ll get similar in St Louis. This could also be a decent match if given time.

United States Championship Fatal Four-Way: Jacob Fatu (c) vs. LA Knight vs. Damian Priest vs. Drew McIntyre

Jacob Fatu puts his US Title on the line in a fatal four way against LA Knight, Damian Priest and Drew McIntyre. WWE has a knack for producing some decent multi-person matches in recent years, so this should hopefully add to that run.

Pat McAfee vs. Gunther

This ‘special attraction’ will likely be Gunther absolutely destroying Pat McAfee for five minutes and then leaving him a bloody mess. That’s exactly what it should be and the chance to write McAfee off television for a few months so he can do his podcast.

WWE Backlash 2025 Predicted Match Order

WWE Backlash 2025 is set to take place tonight (Saturday, 10 May 2025) from the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri. As the first Premium Live Event following WrestleMania 41, Backlash will be setting up the state of the company as we head towards the summer. While the official match order hasn’t been confirmed, here’s our predicted sequence based on current storyline developments and match significance.

Opener: Lyra Valkyria vs. Becky Lynch – Women’s Intercontinental Championship

Kicking off the event, Women’s Intercontinental Championship match between Lyra Valkyria and Becky Lynch will likely set the tone. Following their brief alliance and subsequent fallout, Lynch’s heel turn adds a different dynamic to this one.

Mid-Card Highlight: Gunther vs. Pat McAfee

Next, the clash between Gunther and Pat McAfee will probably provide a slightly different momentum to the even. Gunther will likely be destroying McAfee here to write him off TV, so putting it second on the show doesn’t derail momentum into the rest of the card.

Dominik Mysterio vs. Penta – Intercontinental Championship

The Intercontinental Championship match between Dominik Mysterio and Penta will likely follow. Mysterio’s recent title win and Penta’s pursuit of arguably the most prestigious midcard title in the company could lead to this being a sleeper for match of the night.

Penultimate match: Jacob Fatu vs. LA Knight vs. Damian Priest vs. Drew McIntyre – United States Championship Fatal 4-Way

The Fatal 4-Way for the United States Championship features Jacob Fatu defending against LA Knight, Damian Priest, and Drew McIntyre, and we think that it will be the penultimate match on the card. This will be a quick and hard hitting affair so getting it on just before the main event makes sense.

Main Event: John Cena vs. Randy Orton – Undisputed WWE Championship

There’s nothing else that could be in the main event. John Cena vs Randy Orton for the final time is one of the biggest bouts the company can do right now in Cena’s retirement tour, so this will end the night (hopefully) with a bang.

What Are WWE Press Conferences?

WWE press conferences are official post-event media sessions where WWE Superstars, executives, and sometimes producers answer questions from journalists and provide insight into the night’s matches. These pressers are typically streamed live on platforms like WWE’s YouTube channel and offer fans exclusive reactions, storyline developments, and occasionally breaking news. Modeled after traditional sports media events, WWE press conferences help bridge the gap between sports entertainment and legitimate sporting presentation.

WWE Backlash Predictions

John Cena vs. Randy Orton – Undisputed WWE Championship

In a rivalry that has defined an era, John Cena will defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Randy Orton for the final time. With Cena’s recent heel turn and his quest to retire as champion, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Despite Orton’s hometown advantage, Cena’s current and WWE’s reported plans for his retirement tour suggest he’ll retain the title.

Prediction: John Cena retains the Undisputed WWE Championship.

Gunther vs. Pat McAfee

In a surprising matchup, former Intercontinental and World Heavyweight Champion Gunther faces off against Pat McAfee. This will likely be the way that McAfee gets written off television for some time, so expect Gunther to decimate him this weekend.

Prediction: Gunther defeats Pat McAfee.

Lyra Valkyria vs. Becky Lynch – WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship

Becky Lynch challenges Lyra Valkyria for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship. Given Lynch’s star power and the potential for interference from someone like Bayley to add to the drama, we can see Lynch winning the newly created title from her countrywoman Valkyria.

Prediction: Becky Lynch captures the Women’s Intercontinental Championship.

Jacob Fatu vs. LA Knight vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Damian Priest – WWE United States Championship Fatal Four-Way

Jacob Fatu defends his United States Championship against LA Knight, Drew McIntyre, and Damian Priest in a high-stakes Fatal Four-Way match. With Fatu’s recent run and popularity it looks like he’s poised to retain.

Prediction: Jacob Fatu retains the United States Championship.

Dominik Mysterio vs. Penta – WWE Intercontinental Championship

Dominik Mysterio puts his Intercontinental Championship on the line against Penta. Having only won the belt at Mania, it’s unlikely that Mysterio will drop the belt here. Still, it could end up being a sleeper for match of the night.

Prediction: Dominik Mysterio retains the Intercontinental Championship.

What Could Be Announced This Week for WWE Backlash 2025

Seth Rollins & Bron Breakker vs. Sami Zayn & Roman Reigns – Tag Team Match

The alliance between Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker has caused turmoil on RAW, especially after their attack on Roman Reigns. With Sami Zayn showing interest in challenging the new power duo, a tag team match pitting Rollins and Breakker against Zayn and Reigns could be added to the show late on. Although, this is probably not likely as Reigns is expected to be off programming for some time.
