ROH Women’s World Champion Athena will put her title on the line as part of the run-up to AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.
Announced Thursday, Athena will put her record-long title streak up against Stardom’s Syuri who will be making her promotional debut as part of the newly-announced ROH vs. CMLL vs. Stardom Global Wars show that will air on June 18 on HonorClub.
The match will be filmed either this Wednesday or next Thursday during AEW’s two nights in Cincinnati for their Summer Blockbuster shows. As of this writing, no other matches have been announced.
It will be a rematch from February’s NJPW The New Beginning USA where Syuri successfully defended her IWGP Women’s title. Both women also shared the ring during last July’s women’s Casino gauntlet match at All In: Texas that marked Syuri’s AEW debut.
Athena will be looking to extend her near-1300 day title run. She is awaiting her opponent in the semifinals of the AEW women’s Owen Hart Foundation tournament which will likely take place while she is in Cincinnati as well.
Forbidden Door, which will feature talent from AEW, CMLL, NJPW and Stardom, is set for Sunday, June 28 in San Jose, California.
IT’S OFFICIAL! Global Wars: Cincinnati will see #ROH Women’s World Champion @AthenaPalmer_FG defend her title against @syuri_wv3s!
Several wrestlers from Stardom have responded to Thekla.
The AEW Women’s World Champion spat on the Stardom logo during Wednesday’s broadcast of AEW Dynamite and “declared death” to the promotion.
Stardom wrestlers Syuri, Starlight Kid, and Lady C, the official Stardom account on X, and English commentator Walker Stewart have all responded to Thekla’s actions.
Lady C wrote, “Why would you do something like that…? I’ve clashed with Teca a few times, but not once did I ever understand what was going through her mind. Even after getting fired from Stardom, even after becoming the AEW Women’s World Champion, her obsession with Stardom still— isn’t it because she actually loves Stardom?”
Lady C later added, “It’s so frustrating. Even when someone leaves, we’ve kept protecting Stardom. One person’s strength might be small, but we’ve protected it together. Stardom is our pride.”
Former Stardom wrestler Mina Shirakawa wrote: “Damn… that’s really disrespectful. Man, that’s really harsh, for real.”
Stardom English commentator Walker Stewart wrote: “Absolutely disgusting. Don’t forget where you came from…”
It was a busy night for Syuri at NJPW New Beginning USA. Minutes after she defeated Athena to retain one championship, Alex Windsor challenged her for another at Pro Wrestling EVE’s Wrestle Queendom in March.
Syuri is the current IWGP Women’s Champion and New Japan STRONG Women’s Champion. She pinned Athena with a Death Valley Driver to retain the IWGP title in Trenton, New Jersey, on Friday night. Afterwards, she grabbed Athena’s ROH Women’s World Championship belt, teasing a match for that title. Before either could make that match official, however, the lights went out and Windsor appeared on the video screen.
As the video showed Windsor working out and training, her voice was heard talking about her previous loss to Syuri in a challenge for the IWGP Women’s Championship at a previous Pro-Wrestling: EVE event in London last June.
Windsor then turned and spoke to the camera, addressing Syuri by name. “It seems like destiny just keeps bringing us back together, doesn’t it?” she asked. “The only thing that has changed since last time is the prize I am fighting to take off you. On Sunday the Eighth of March, International Women’s Day, at the Indigo O2, I challenge you for your New Japan Strong Women’s Championship. Wrestle Queendom VIII. Syuri-Windsor II.”
This is the eighth match announced so far for Wrestle Queendom VIII, which has already sold out. Other championship matches include Rhio defending the EVE Championship against Session Moth Martina, Kris Statlander defending the EVE International Championship against Charlie (Dakota Kai), and Hollie Barlow & Lana Austin defending the EVE Tag Team Championships against Charli Evans and a mystery partner.
Harley Cameron, Willow Nightingale, AZM, and Jamie Hayter have also been announced for the show.
A champion vs. champion match has been booked for New Japan Pro Wrestling’s New Beginning USA event later this month.
Ring of Honor Women’s Champion Athena announced on social media that she will be facing Syuri on that show, and that Syuri’s IWGP Women’s Championship will be on the line.
This will be the second defense of Syuri’s current championship reign, and the first since she defeated Saya Kamitani to win the NJPW Strong Women’s championship in a title vs. title match at WrestleKingdom 20 on January 4. That match barely went 12 minutes but still got a ****1/2 rating from Dave Meltzer.
Syuri’s last match in the United States was a Casino Gauntlet Match at AEW All In Texas last July. The winner of that match: Athena.
Athena has been ROH Women’s Champion for over 1,100 days, having defeated Mercedes Martinez for the title in October of 2022. It appears her title will not be on the line against Syuri.
NJPW New Beginning USA 2026 will take place at the CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton, New Jersey, on February 27. Tickets are available here.
Already booked for that show:
El Phantasmo defending the NJPW World Television Title against Konosuke Takeshita
Tomohiro Ishii defending the NJPW Strong Openweight Title against Oleg Boltin
Syuri defending the IWGP Women’s Championship against Athena
NJPW has announced a few more names who will be making the trip over for New Beginning USA 2026.
On February 27, NJPW comes to CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton, New Jersey for the New Beginning event. It was announced today that Syuri, Tomohiro Ishii, Oleg Boltin, and El Desperado will be among the talent competing. Their matches have not been announced yet.
Syuri enters the show as a double champion following her victory over Saya Kamitani at Wrestle Kingdom 20. She retained the IWGP Women’s Championship in the match and now also holds the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship.
Ishii is the men’s NJPW Strong Openweight Champion, having won the title from Gabe Kidd in April 2025. His only defense so far has been a victory over Drilla Moloney.
This appearance will be Boltin’s first time wrestling in the United States. An amateur wrestler from Kazakhstan, he made his in-ring debut for NJPW in 2023.
So far, the New Beginning card has one confirmed match: El Phantasmo vs. Konosuke Takeshita for the NJPW World Television Championship. It’s also been announced that Yota Tsuji — the IWGP Heavyweight Champion and Global Heavyweight Champion — will be in action.
In the official second match of the night at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20 on January 4th, 2026, at the Tokyo Dome, fans witnessed Syuri crown herself as the brand new NJPW Strong & IWGP women’s double champion.
IWGP Women’s Champion Syuri faced off against the NJPW Strong Women’s Champion Saya Kamitani in a Winner Takes All match for both titles. Following an impressive and hard-fought match, Syuri was able to defeat Kamitani and capture the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship.
In the closing moments of the match, Syuri hit the flaming torrent and kept Kamitani down for three count and sealed the victory. While an emotional Syuri celebrated and soaked in the moment, fans also noticed a sour Kamitani, disappointed at the result, throwing a small tantrum before walking out to the back with her team.
The title victory tonight marks Syuri’s first reign as the NJPW Strong Women’s Champion, while Kamitani’s reign came to an end at 99-days. She had previously won the title from AZM on 27th September, 2025, who in turn had won the championship from Mercedes Mone, earlier in 2025.
Meanwhile, Syuri has been the IWGP Women’s Champion since NJPW King Of Pro-Wrestling 2025.
After making her AEW debut on Saturday at All In Texas at Globe Life Field, Syuri is back in Japan and will undergo elbow surgery soon. She announced the news in a post to her Instagram Stories on Tuesday.
“I’m having surgery this month on my elbow, which has been hurting for a while!!” She wrote (translation via @meraWrestling)
Shortly after losing the IWGP Women’s Championship to Sareee in June, Syuri announced she was taking a sabbatical from Stardom to wrestle in the United States, although no U.S. bookings were ever officially announced. A vignette promoting Syuri’s debut aired at ROH Supercard of Honor on Friday. She was then a surprise entrant in the Women’s Casino Gauntlet match on Saturday. The day after All In, she posted to Instagram that she was headed back to Japan.
Several surprise entrants appeared in the Women’s Casino Gauntlet match at AEW All In.
Former IWGP Women’s Champion Syuri entered the match in the number 11 position. A vignette featuring Syuri also aired on the ROH Supercard of Honor broadcast on Friday night. She revealed shortly after losing the IWGP title to Sareee in June that she would be taking a break from Stardom to wrestle overseas.
Harley Cameron also returned to AEW during the Casino Gauntlet. She wasn’t an official entrant but interfered by pushing Penelope Ford off the top rope. Cameron wore a face mask after undergoing nose surgery last month.
After announcing she had signed with AEW in June, Alex Windsor returned to the promotion for the first time since Global Wars Australia in February. She entered in the number 12 position and immediately started a striking exchange with Syuri, who she challenged for the IWGP title last month at an EVE show in London. They were the final two entrants into the match, which ended when Athena pinned Mina Shirakawa after an O-Face.
During ROH’s Supercard of Honor event on Friday, a vignette aired highlighting the Stardom star’s background in karate and her striking abilities, with a voiceover saying that Syuri would be coming. It wasn’t specified if she was coming to AEW, ROH, or both rosters.
— ROH – Ring of Honor Wrestling (@ringofhonor) July 12, 2025
Earlier this month, Syuri and Stardom announced that she would be ‘taking a break’ from the company to wrestle overseas. Her announcement came shortly after losing the IWGP Women’s Championship to Sareee.
“I have been wrestling for 17 years. I thought about it long and hard, but I have decided to take a break from #STARDOM,” she said in a statement. “I will train overseas and level up my game even more. My loss to Sareee was really frustrating. I won’t go out like this. I want to hold the IWGP again. That’s why I made this decision. I’m sorry to everyone who was looking forward to my appearances in the ring. I will be back in a STARDOM ring one day.”
Syuri is a former MMA competitor, amassing a 6-3 record with all of her losses taking place in the UFC. She returned to Stardom in 2020 and quickly rose to the top, winning the World of Stardom Championship in 2021 and holding it for one year.

Syuri won the Wonder of Stardom Championship at this morning’s Stardom Dream Queendom 2021 event, the company’s final show of the year. She won the match after pinning Utami Hayashishita, who had held the championship for over 400 days, defeating Mayu Iwatani on November 15, 2020. Both the World of Stardom and the SWA Championship were on the line; Syuri retained the latter championship.
After the match, Syuri first thanked her mom in heaven, then thanked Utami from the bottom of her heart. Utami was helped to the back as Syuri said at long last she had the top belt in Stardom. She said she would live the next year without regret and asked the Stardom fans for their support going into 2022.
Syuri and Utami have been feuding for most of 2021. On June 12, the two had a match that ended in a double KO. Another match, which took place in September as part of the 5STAR Grand Prix, ended in a time limit draw. This morning’s match had no time limit.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE
Bryan and I will be back tonight taking Raw and the latest wrestling news. You can also send questions to the show tonight to [email protected]
Raw tonight has Drew McIntyre vs. A.J. Styles, New Day vs. Randy Orton & Riddle and the debut of Eva Marie vs. Naomi. Rumor has it Eva Marie will have some muscle with her and with a debut against Naomi, that would put her on the heel side as we talked about the last few weeks.
We’ll have all the details in the issue, but the key ratings notes are that on Friday, Smackdown did 1,944,000 viewers and 0.48 in 18-49. AEW did 487,000 viewers and 0.19 in 18-49. AEW did 160,000 viewers on Saturday via DVR of the show.
SummerSlam tickets for 8/21 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas moved extremely well in today’s presale. We don’t know how many tickets were put on sale, but it appeared a large percentage of the planned total 41,000+ seats were put on sale because while there are empty sections not sold, most are. Of those put on sale, there were 1,085 left as of our last report. It’s pretty clear they’ll do a very healthy total. The general public on sale isn’t until Friday.
Saturday’s Utami Hayashishita vs. Syuri match for the Wonder of Stardom title is more than worth going out of your way to see. The negative is that if you don’t like hard-hitting matches with women, you won’t like this. But for technical skill, hard-hitting, and drama, this is one of the best matches of the year and in a completely different category than any women’s match in years. The match will be available on Wednesday or Thursday on Stardom World. You can watch it right now on PPV here. It didn’t have the crazy moves and blood of Britt Baker vs.Thunder Rosa but as a technical match it’s very much like a Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin mixed with Shinobu Kandori vs. Akira Hokuto. If you are a fan of women’s wrestling, now that they have English commentary on the shows, you really should subscribe to Stardom world. The storylines are good, emotional, work from top to bottom is very good and the people involved in the training of these women have a magic wand in getting people so good so quickly.
Scott Smoot, who had been Vice President of Live Events Production, who was let go in cuts, is being brought back since they are back to doing live events.
Regarding the return of Samoa Joe, who will be working in NXT it could be as a replacement for William Regal if he’s leaving, working with Regal in some fashion, and God knows they need a new opponent for Karrion Kross right now and Joe would certainly fit that thing and garner some interest there.
Kim Wood and I tell the story of Brian Pillman and Terry Funk’s idea of chaining him to the post during the Super Bowl in Phoenix.
Friday’s Lamar Odom vs. Aaron Carter Celebrity Boxing PPV did roughly the same number of television PPV buys as a good Impact PPV show.

Get ready for the return of the mouth of Colby Covington as he gets groomed for a rematch with Kamaru Usman. With Dana White confirming him for the next title shot, Colby Covington joined Submission Radio and reacted to Leon Edwards’ win over Nate Diaz: “I think that’s hilarious. I think Edwards Scissorhands, he’s out here claiming to be this god and he’s ready for a title shot. Dude, you’re struggling with a lightweight journeyman who has double-digit losses on his record, and this guy is almost finishing you? And you think you need to be in a title shot? That guy needs to go win ten more fights or 20 more fights if he can’t get by Nate Diaz like that. The guy’s a Stockton soy boy. He’s been finished by everybody. The guy has no gas left in the tank. He’s even saying himself he has no motivation left to fight. So, if you’re struggling with a guy like Nate Diaz, there’s no way you belong anywhere close to a world title fight.”
Andre Fili vs. Daniel Pineda is earmarked for the 6/26 show.
