Tom Lawlor recovering following successful hip surgery

Tom Lawlor is doing well following hip surgery.

Bryan Alvarez has provided an update following Lawlor’s hip replacement surgery, which was scheduled for Tuesday.

“Filthy Tom’s hip surgery was a success and he’s currently recovering, continued best wishes to him!,” Alvarez reports.

Lawlor, who is a co-host on Wrestling Observer Live with Alvarez and is a frequent contributor to the Wrestling Observer/Figure Four website, revealed last week that he would go under the knife on Tuesday. Lawlor was optimistic about his recovery when revealing the news.

“Yeah, I’ve heard from quite a few people that have had hip replacements…this is one of them that a lot of people say they’ve had great success with, was a game changer, helped them out,” he said. So hopefully I fall into that boat as well.”

Lawlor has been out of action since May with a number of injuries. In addition to his hip, he’s also said that he might need back surgery in the future as he’s also dealing with herniated discs.

Tom Lawlor provides update on hip replacement surgery

Tom Lawlor is heading in for surgery.

On Friday’s Wrestling Observer Live, the former NJPW Strong Openweight Champion confirmed that he would be getting hip replacement surgery next week for his left side.

“Going under the knife Tuesday morning, 7:30 a.m.,” he said. “Yeah, I’ve heard from quite a few people that have had hip replacements…this is one of them that a lot of people say they’ve had great success with, was a game changer, helped them out. So I hopefully I fall into that boat as well.”

Lawlor, who has been wrestling on the independent scene for a number of years following his UFC run, hasn’t wrestled since May. Last month, he confirmed he’d need the surgery.

“I went to a local medical facility,” he explained. “A local medical professional took a look at me. He took a look at these scans that I’ve had done and he said, ‘You know what, Filthy Tom Lawlor? If you walked in to the nursing home right now, there are 90 year old women who would rightfully have pity upon the shape that your left hip is in. He said the right’s not great either, but the left side’s so bad that there’s just a ton of bone spurs that have pushed the hip out of the socket.”

In addition to his hip, Lawlor said he is also suffering from herniated discs and has lost a lot of feeling in his left leg as a result.

Tom Lawlor confirms he needs hip replacement surgery

“Filthy” Tom Lawlor needs hip replacement surgery.

During his regular appearance co-hosting Wrestling Observer Live on Wednesday, Lawlor revealed he recently had his hip evaluated and the doctor was particularly descriptive in their diagnosis.

Lawlor said:

“I went to a local medical facility. A local medical professional took a look at me. He took a look at these scans that I’ve had done and he said, ‘You know what, Filthy Tom Lawlor? If you walked in to the nursing home right now, there are 90 year old women who would rightfully have pity upon the shape that your left hip is in.”

Lawlor then mentioned he will be having his hip replaced.

“He said the right’s not great either, but the left side’s so bad that there’s just a ton of bone spurs that have pushed the hip out of the socket.”

Lawlor hasn’t wrestled since May. He revealed on Wrestling Observer Live late last month that, in addition to his hip problems, he might also require back surgery.

“The L5 S1 vertebrae in my back, down at the bottom, I have herniated discs, there’s no discs there anymore. And the spinal column, that portion is out of place and is pinching a nerve in my back and that’s why I’ve lost a lot of feeling in my left leg, some size was atrophied. And really, I have a hard time walking.”

Lawlor co-hosts episodes of Wrestling Observer Live every Wednesday. Earlier this month, he awarded his mid-year Filthy Awards for various categories. He also unveiled a new star-rating system last week:

Tom Lawlor gives injury update, doesn’t know if he’ll wrestle again

Tom Lawlor has provided an update on his health.

On Monday’s Wrestling Observer Live, Lawlor gave an update on his injury status as he hasn’t wrestled for the last six weeks.

“I had some scans done and unfortunately, its sounds as if I’m heading towards…what I’ve been told I need to have done is have a hip replacement in my left hip and some sort of spinal surgery,” he said.

“I don’t know how long I’m going to be on the shelf, I don’t know if I’ll ever wrestle again,” he added. “It really depends on that the neurosurgeon says.”

He told Bryan Alvarez that he will get “a few different looks” from doctors. He said he was also a potential candidate for disc replacement surgery.

“Physically I’m feeling awful, Mentally, emotionally I’m fine,” he stated.

So far In 2025, Lawlor has made appearances for MLW, Jersey Championship Wrestling, GCW, and New Japan Strong.
