SmackDown Tag Team title match set for WWE SummerSlam

The Mysterios are getting their SmackDown Tag Team title rematch at SummerSlam.

WWE announced today that The Usos will defend their SmackDown Tag Team titles against Rey & Dominik Mysterio at SummerSlam. At Money in the Bank last month, The Usos won the SmackDown Tag Team titles by defeating The Mysterios on the pre-show.

The finish of that title match was Jimmy Uso rolling up Rey Mysterio while Jey Uso used his feet to give his brother extra leverage. On SmackDown two weeks ago, Jey did the same thing to help Jimmy defeat Dominik in a singles match. But The Mysterios then returned the favor last week when Dominik helped Rey defeat Jimmy.

SummerSlam is taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 21. Here’s the updated card for the pay-per-view:

  • Universal Champion Roman Reigns defends against John Cena
  • WWE Champion Bobby Lashley defends against Goldberg
  • Raw Women’s Champion Nikki A.S.H. defends against Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley in a triple threat match
  • SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos defend against Rey & Dominik Mysterio

Bobby Lashley vs. Goldberg official for WWE SummerSlam

Goldberg is officially the next challenger for Bobby Lashley’s WWE Championship.

Lashley will defend his WWE Championship against Goldberg at SummerSlam on Saturday, August 21. A confrontation between Lashley and Goldberg on Raw tonight led to the match being made official for SummerSlam later in the episode.

After Goldberg headed to the back following the confrontation, Lashley went face-to-face with Goldberg’s son Gage at ringside. Lashley and MVP both taunted Gage. As MVP was telling Gage that Lashley will end Goldberg’s career at SummerSlam, Goldberg came back out and hit a spear on MVP.

Goldberg returned to Raw two weeks ago and kicked off the build to him facing Lashley at SummerSlam. Goldberg also confronted Lashley on that episode, but Lashley dismissed Goldberg’s challenge. Lashley finally accepted the challenge during a backstage interview on Raw tonight. Lashley said he hopes Goldberg brings his son with him to SummerSlam so his son can watch Lashley annihilate Goldberg.

SummerSlam will be the first time Goldberg has wrestled since losing to Drew McIntyre at the Royal Rumble this January.

Lashley has been WWE Champion since winning the title from The Miz this March.

SummerSlam is taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Roman Reigns vs. John Cena official for WWE SummerSlam

The main event of SummerSlam is now official.

On tonight’s SmackDown, it was confirmed that Roman Reigns will defend his Universal Championship against John Cena at SummerSlam. The pay-per-view is taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 21.

WWE had been teasing that Finn Balor would instead challenge Reigns at SummerSlam, but a contract signing on tonight’s SmackDown ended with Reigns vs. Cena being made official. Baron Corbin took out Balor before Balor could sign the contract. Corbin attempted to sign the contract instead, but Cena ran in and sent Corbin out of the ring. Cena then signed the contract.

Paul Heyman tried to argue that the contract shouldn’t be binding, but Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville told him that it was good enough for them.

On last week’s SmackDown, Reigns declined Cena’s challenge for a Universal Championship match at SummerSlam. Balor then came out to the ring and issued his own challenge to Reigns. Reigns agreed to face Balor.

The build to Reigns vs. Cena began when Cena returned to WWE programming and confronted Reigns at Money in the Bank earlier this month.

Here’s the updated card for SummerSlam:

  • Universal Champion Roman Reigns defends against John Cena
  • Raw Women’s Champion Nikki A.S.H. defends against Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley in a triple threat match

Tiffany Haddish to host WWE SummerSlam after party

Image: NBC

Comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish will host the official WWE after party for SummerSlam in Las Vegas.

The event is invite-only and will feature “WWE Superstars, celebrity guests and influential business partners.”

WWE announced they will make a donation to Haddish’s She Ready Foundation which helps kids in the foster care system have a better life.

The press release did not mention whether the event will also be aired on Peacock and WWE Network, either live or after the event is over.

It will be a busy night in Las Vegas on that Saturday, August 21st as Manny Pacquiao will face Errol Spence Jr. in a highly-anticipated boxing match at the T-Mobile Arena. SummerSlam, held at Allegiant Stadium, is expected to wrap in time for fans that have tickets to both events to make it to the main event.

SummerSlam is expected to feature Universal Champion Roman Reigns vs. John Cena and WWE Champion Bobby Lashley vs. Goldberg.

Triple threat Raw Women’s title match set for WWE SummerSlam

The Raw Women’s Championship will be on the line in a triple threat match at SummerSlam.

During the opening segment of tonight’s Raw, it was announced that Nikki A.S.H. will defend her Raw Women’s Championship against Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley in a triple threat match at SummerSlam. The pay-per-view is taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, August 21.

Nikki A.S.H. became Raw Women’s Champion by cashing in her Money in the Bank briefcase on Charlotte last Monday. Nikki A.S.H. had won the briefcase in the previous night’s women’s Money in the Bank ladder match.

Charlotte’s reign with the Raw Women’s Championship lasted just one day after winning the title from Ripley at Money in the Bank. They faced off in a rematch on last week’s Raw, but Charlotte intentionally got herself disqualified.

Ripley hit Riptide on Charlotte outside of the ring after last Monday’s title match. Nikki A.S.H. then cashed in her briefcase, hit a top rope crossbody on Charlotte, and pinned her to win the Raw Women’s Championship.

Nikki A.S.H. opened tonight’s Raw before being interrupted by Charlotte. Ripley then made her way out to the ring. The segment led to WWE authority figures Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville announcing the triple threat Raw Women’s Championship match for SummerSlam. It was also announced that Nikki A.S.H. will face Charlotte in a non-title match later tonight.

This is the first match that’s been officially announced for SummerSlam. Roman Reigns vs. John Cena for the Universal Championship, Bobby Lashley vs. Goldberg for the WWE Championship, and Seth Rollins vs. Edge are also expected to take place at the PPV.

WWE & TikTok launch SummerSlam ring announcer contest

WWE and TikTok are launching a contest to find two people who will appear as ring announcers at SummerSlam.

“Beginning today, WWE will launch a search for its next great ring announcer on TikTok, as users can upload their most entertaining videos using the hashtag #WWEAnnouncerContest,” WWE announced. “The best performers will earn a trip to SummerSlam at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 21, where they will serve as a ring announcer at WWE’s biggest event of 2021. The announcer search is presented by Pure Life Purified Water.”

WWE will review each submission in the weeks leading into SummerSlam. The two winners will then be announced on WWE’s TikTok channel on Monday, August 16.

“Our engagement on TikTok to date has been incredible and we couldn’t think of a better platform to help us find the next great ring announcer,” said Steve Braband, WWE Vice President, Digital.

“Today’s announcement follows another innovative TikTok activation, through which WWE aims to discover and recruit its next generation of Superstars via the TikTok Resumes product,” WWE wrote. “The search culminates in a multi-day talent tryout in Las Vegas as part of SummerSlam.”

Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium is hosting SummerSlam on Saturday, August 21. John Cena returned to WWE programming at Money in the Bank last night to confront Universal Champion Roman Reigns and set up a match for SummerSlam. The match has yet to be officially announced.

Report: Goldberg returning to WWE Raw on Monday

WWE’s first episode of Raw back in front of fans could have a major star return, according to a report.

Fightful Select reports that as of today, Goldberg is scheduled to return to WWE Raw on Monday’s episode at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The Fightful report also states that WWE’s current plan is to have Goldberg face Bobby Lashley for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam on Saturday, August 21 at Allegiant Stadium in Nevada. The report also states that Goldberg’s WWE contract runs through 2022 and calls for two matches per year.

Goldberg’s last WWE appearance came at Royal Rumble 2021 on January 31. He challenged Drew McIntyre for the WWE title on that show in a losing effort.

Goldberg wrestled twice in 2020, defeating The Fiend for the Universal title at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia in February, then dropping the title to Braun Strowman on night one of WrestleMania 36.

Goldberg also wrestled twice in 2019. He lost to The Undertaker at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia in June, then defeated Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam in Toronto.

John Cena’s movie schedule won’t affect WWE SummerSlam plans

Image: WWE

On Monday’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said John Cena’s upcoming filming schedule will not affect any plans for a SummerSlam return.

Cena vs. Universal Champion Roman Reigns has been the discussed SummerSlam plan for some time, but the news last week of Cena’s filming commitment to new project “Argylle” raised some questions.

Meltzer said he was told the filming schedule, set to begin in Europe this August, isn’t expected to be a hurdle and whatever is going down at SummerSlam is still a go.

“Argylle,” which is based on a novel that will be published next year, will “follow the globe-trotting adventures of a super-spy named Argylle across the U.S., London and other exotic locations.” Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and pop star Dua Lipa have been announced for the movie.

Cena recently said in interviews that he would definitely be returning to the ring and is excited to do so, though Cena said he didn’t know when his return would be happening. This would be his first action since his cinematic match against “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt at 2020’s WrestleMania.

SummerSlam is set for Saturday, August 21 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Reigns will next defend his Universal title against Edge at Money in the Bank this Sunday.

June 21, 2021 Observer Newsletter: WWE SummerSlam & Hell in a Cell notes, NXT TakeOver: In Your House review

SummerSlam tickets for 8/21 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas officially go on sale to the public on 6/18, but with no matches or talent announced, it looks like the idea of making it the company’s big-time travel show of the year is going to work.

Actual ticket sales started on 6/14 and at press time there were just over 3,000 seats remaining. The question, and WWE hasn’t answered, The building right now is set up for 41,600 total people which means for an event of this level, about 35,000 paid. However, many sections that would hit that total were not put on sale yet. They did come close enough to presale expectations since they put more seats on sale after day one than were on sale on day one. It appears that more than 30,000 tickets are out at this point between those sold and business comps, so tickets moved very well. WrestleMania did most of its selling in the presale and each night ended up in the 20,000 range. It is interesting that so many piggy backed off WrestleMania as was tradition, but right now nobody seems to be piggy backing off this even though it looks to end up with a lot more traveling fans.

June 14, 2021 Observer Newsletter: SummerSlam to Las Vegas, NJPW Dominion review

WWE officially announced SummerSlam for 8/21 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, which based on the routing was the clear favorite of the different stadiums announced.

Really, this was always the choice given Smackdown being taped the night before in Phoenix and a house show the next day in Denver. That ruled out New York, Miami and Nashville. Sources at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood have said it wasn’t happening there and that was the only alternative sight. We were told when WWE planted the five different locations they were considering story with Sports Business Journal that the decision had already been Las Vegas but they were trying to build up interest in announcing the location during NBC’s airing of The Belmont Stakes horse race on 6/5.

The company announced it was the first time SummerSlam will be held in an NFL stadium. That’s both technically true and technically not true. Wembley Stadium, the home of the 1992 SummerSlam show, has hosted NFL games regularly since 2007 and the London Monarchs of the NFL funded World League played their home games at the stadium. But the Wembley Stadium that the 1992 show was held at is a different version of the stadium the NFL games were at.

Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium to host WWE SummerSlam

SummerSlam is officially coming to Las Vegas this August.

WWE has confirmed that Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada will host SummerSlam 2021 on Saturday, August 21. The announcement of the event’s location was made during a video that aired on NBC’s pre-race show for the Belmont Stakes today.

SummerSlam tickets will go on sale on Friday, June 18. WWE has also opened registration for a ticket pre-sale.

Las Vegas had been considered the leading candidate to host SummerSlam leading into today’s announcement. Sports Business Journal had reported that five other NFL stadiums (Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida; SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California; NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas; MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey; and Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee) were also in consideration to host the show.

“Coming out of the pandemic, it was important to us to have a big event like SummerSlam in Las Vegas. We expect to deliver a great night of sports-entertainment for the people of the city and a boost in foot traffic for the casinos and local businesses,” said Nick Khan, WWE President & Chief Revenue Officer and Las Vegas native.

“The Raiders are thrilled to join WWE in hosting SummerSlam at Allegiant Stadium in August,” said Raiders President Marc Badain. “WWE is a leader in global entertainment, and to host one of its signature events in the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World is a perfect fit. The Raiders look forward to SummerSlam and a full schedule of events and entertainment to come at Allegiant Stadium.”

“We couldn’t be more excited to host SummerSlam for the very first time and welcome WWE, its Superstars and the WWE Universe to Las Vegas this August,” said Steve Hill, President and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. “Live entertainment and sporting events are returning to the destination in a big way, and SummerSlam is the perfect addition to the Las Vegas summer calendar.”

Allegiant Stadium opened last year and is the home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders. This will be the first time that SummerSlam has taken place at an NFL stadium. In 1992, SummerSlam was held at Wembley Stadium in London, England.

A boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Errol Spence Jr. will also be taking place in Las Vegas on the same day as SummerSlam with sources saying they expect the card to end before the main event starts.

SummerSlam will air live on Peacock in the United States and the WWE Network everywhere else. The main card will begin at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

Las Vegas leading candidate to host WWE SummerSlam

SummerSlam 2021 may be headed to the Las Vegas area.

Dave Meltzer has confirmed that Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada is the leading candidate to host SummerSlam 2021. The stadium, which opened last year, is the home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders.

Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso reported on Thursday that SummerSlam will take place in Nevada this August, but the report didn’t state which city or venue will be hosting the event.

On his Living The Gimmick podcast, Jon Alba reported earlier this month that Las Vegas was WWE’s main target to host SummerSlam and WWE was hoping that the show would take place at Allegiant Stadium. Fightful also reported that Las Vegas seemed to be gaining a lot of steam as the choice for SummerSlam’s host city.

Meltzer noted earlier this month that New York City’s Madison Square Garden was being considered as an option to host SummerSlam.

Barrasso also wrote that July’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view will be held in Texas. Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men Pro Wrestling podcast first reported that Money in the Bank will take place on Sunday, July 18 with a live audience. WWE is targeting mid-July for its return to running shows in front of live crowds.

Money in the Bank was originally set to take place in June before being moved to July. Hell in a Cell has instead been announced for Sunday, June 20 and is scheduled to be the final ThunderDome PPV before WWE returns to touring.
