Gage talks pressure of following Bill Goldberg’s legacy

Bill Goldberg and his son, Gage Goldberg talked about the veteran’s legacy in wrestling and football. Gage discussed embracing the pressure that went along with the Goldberg name.

In an interview with Memphis in May, Gage Goldberg says he wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and potentially surpass Bill Goldberg’s legacy.

“I’ve always wanted to continue his legacy. I feel like there’s always been the shadow of it. So, I’m just trying to do exactly what he did and maybe do it even better.”

“I’ve been having to deal with it my whole life. I mean, I’ve just been overcoming it and just trying to do exactly what he’s been doing and live up to that legacy and then hopefully get over the shadow and become a better badass than he was.”

Bill Goldberg discussed the hardships in transitioning from football to pro wrestling.

“I think the hardest part was two very difficult things for me. First and foremost, it was not to hurt people. Because you go from a sport that’s 100% full contact to more of a drama-filled because you go from a sport that’s 100% full contact to more of a drama-filled the existing wrestlers because it it it I’m coming in from a professional background trying to take the job of one of these guys who have aspired to do that their entire lives. For me, I was born in a football helmet and I’ve wanted to be a football player my entire life. And I transitioned to wrestling because I had to retire from football ‘cause I got hurt.”

“It’s tough to enter a profession as an outsider and there was a lot of pressure on me. But the reality is I came from a sport where I got two guys that are 320 lbs trying to kill me at the same time. So for me, anything beyond the football field was easy.”

When asked about the toughest obstacle faced as a pro wrestler, Goldberg reflected on a match with Paul Wight. He had to lift him up for a jackhammer, a move Wight significantly hated for being upside down.

Goldberg officially retired from wrestling in July 2025. He lost to Gunther at SNME that month, and it also kicked off his career killer persona in WWE.

Meanwhile, Gage plays linebacker for the University of Colorado and has expressed interest to pursue a career in wrestling.

In the same interview, Bill teased a reality show with his son, Gage for the Discovery Channel.

Goldberg returns on WWE Raw, facing Gunther at SNME

WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg returned on Monday’s WWE Raw.

The Hall of Famer Goldberg interrupted a Gunther promo and threw down the gauntlet for a World title challenge at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta on July 12 on Monday’s WWE Raw, with WWE confirming the match moments later.

As Gunther discussed potential next opponents, the crowd began to chant for Goldberg. Gunther tried to shut the chants down, but Goldberg’s music hit and the former WCW World Champion made his way to the ring to issue the challenge for Atlanta.

The SNME bout stems from an angle last October at Bad Blood where Gunther, Goldberg, and Goldberg’s son Gage were involved in a segment at the PLE. Goldberg has stated his intention to have a retirement match this year in WWE for months, and has discussed in detail some of the injuries that he has suffered in training for the bout.

Goldberg, 58, has not wrestled since 2022. He says that former WWE chairman Vince McMahon had promised him a retirement match, but went back on his word. With Paul “Triple H” Levesque now helming WWE Creative, it became clear with the Bad Blood appearance that the retirement match was a real possibility.

During a commercial break on Monday’s show, WWE commentator Michael Cole mentioned the “rumors” of a Goldberg retirement match, but did not commit to the SNME bout in fact being billed as the final bout in the 58-year-old’s Hall of Fame career.

WWE has also unveiled a new “Goldberg’s Last Ride” merchandise collection to coincide with his return:

Bill Goldberg says he’ll be cleared to wrestle soon

Bill Goldberg believes he’ll be cleared to wrestle soon.

During an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show on Wednesday, the 58-year-old said it’s still the plan for him to wrestle his retirement match in 2025, and he will likely be cleared to do so shortly after recently undergoing stem cell treatment.

“I don’t have any idea,” he said when asked about a time frame for the match. “I just know that I got stem cells five weeks and six days ago, and I’m cleared physically in a very short period of time.”

Goldberg said on his podcast in December that he planned to undergo stem cell treatment ahead of his 2025 retirement match, citing his shoulder as his biggest concern.

“I haven’t been able to do much at all preparation-wise. But I think that the positives of the stem cell treatment were such a positive that it was worth me staying out of the gym for the longest period of time I ever have in my entire life and and staying away from physical activity.”

“I’m going to jump in the ring and start sparring seven to eight days from now. I got to be smart about it. But yeah, 2025, it’s going to happen. And I don’t know who it’s going to be against. I don’t know when it’s going to be. But I guarantee you, whoever it’s against, they’re going to understand what it’s like being in there with Goldberg.”

Goldberg also addressed the possibility of facing Gunther in his retirement match after they were involved in a segment at WWE Bad Blood in Atlanta last October. During the segment, Gunther referred to the former WCW and WWE World Champion as a “one-trick pony” and said he hoped Goldberg was a better father than he was a wrestler.

“If it was Gunther and I that would be logical. There’s some heat there, obviously, that’s already been placed. And he’s the new generation. I’m the old generation. It’s kind of like a passing of the torch in a way.”

Goldberg’s full appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show can be watched below.

Goldberg: WWE had ‘some Japanese girl’ beat my undefeated streak

Bill Goldberg had some comments regarding his WWE career in a new podcast interview, including that WWE had “some Japanese girl” beat his undefeated streak.

Appearing as a guest on Tim Green – Nothing Left Unsaid, Goldberg spoke about Asuka setting a new record for most consecutive matches undefeated as he arrived in WWE for his second run with the company in 2016:

Well, a girl beat my winning streak… beat my undefeated streak. I can’t even remember…

Asuka [mispronounced] was her name, some Japanese girl. And they touted her as being the one to have the longest winning streak. And it just so happened that that culminated when I got there, right?

While Goldberg returned to WWE in 2016, Asuka debuted in NXT in 2015 and her undefeated streak in the company continued into her time on the main roster before losing to Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 34 in 2018.

When Asuka won her 174th consecutive match to begin her WWE career surpassing Goldberg’s 173-0 WCW run [which also ignores that he lost his third career WCW match in 1997], Goldberg posted this congratulatory tweet:

Goldberg also spoke conspiratorially about a proliferation of wrestlers using the spear:

And then it just so happened that every single wrestler uses the spear in their moves, right? Pretty ironic that it happened when I got there, right?

When asked what may have caused friction between Goldberg and WWE, Goldberg cited his frosty relationship with now-CCO of WWE Paul “Triple H” Levesque:

The fact that I didn’t get along with Paul Levesque, which is Vince’s son-in-law, I think had everything to do with it when I got there.

In speaking about his feud with Triple H during his first WWE run in 2003-2004, Goldberg said:

I think a lot of that between Hunter and myself was real.

The full interview can be seen in the embedded video below.

Goldberg: Vince McMahon is a ‘piece of s**t,’ promised me retirement match

Goldberg called Vince McMahon a “piece of s**t” during a recent interview.

He appeared live on the Steve & Captain Evil podcast during their annual benefit for Helicopters for Heroes on Monday. During the show, Goldberg was asked by a member of the audience about his relationship with Vince McMahon.

Goldberg responded:

Vince is like Dana White. He’s the big boss and he makes everything happen but in all honesty he gave me the opportunity to put my wife and my son in the front row and gave me the ability to perform again in front of them. So I owe him everything, until we went to Saudi Arabia and he asked me to put Roman Reigns over and I had COVID.

I remember calling him from my house here and I said, ‘Listen here’s the deal, I’ll do it if you give me a retirement match.’

Goldberg continued:

So I put myself in a horribly shitty situation to get what I wanted to but to satiate him and to give him what he wants. The problem is, he never held up his part so Vince is a piece of shit as far as I’m concerned.

He also spoke about his relationship with Sting during the interview and revealed that he tried to be part of Sting’s upcoming retirement match at AEW Revolution.

Goldberg said:

Sting is the reason why I broke into the business. Sting set a great example. He’s about to retire in February and I tried to be a part of his retirement match, you know, but..

I wouldn’t have chosen to get into the world of professional wrestling if it wasn’t for Sting. Don”t take offense to this, he was a normal dude who went out and did abnormal things. Wrestling is like being in the circus, I mean it truly is. I never looked at it with much respect but after I watched him from afar, I realized that I had the ability to go do it because he was not only a performer but he had self-respect and he commanded respect. It’s really hard to describe him.

Steve Borden, Sting, is one of the best human beings on the planet and he set an example for me and I just tried to grab the torch and run with it and make him proud.

Earlier this year, Goldberg teased self-promoting a retirement match in Israel, with Sting once being linked to the rumored show as well. Goldberg told 93.7 in April that with McMahon not delivering on his promise, he wants to end his career on his terms.

Vince McMahon and I had a handshake understanding that after the Roman Reigns match, I would have a proper retirement match and that hasn’t come to fruition through them and so therefore, nobody puts a stamp on my career, nobody tells me when I’m done, period, end of story. And when somebody tells me that, I kind of like to fight against it. I like to do things my own way and I go out my own way and I certainly don’t go out under Roman Reigns three weeks after I have COVID and agreed to a match.

Sting potentially involved with Goldberg retirement tour show in Israel

Bill Goldberg and Sting could potentially be involved in a huge show in Israel later this year.

Longtime promoter and agent, Rick Bassman, told Haus of Wrestling recently that he’s been in contact with Goldberg about a potential event in Jerusalem this September.

“First of all, I’m actively in touch with Bill, I’m working on a date right now,” Bassman began. “I don’t promote much these days but every now and then, something fun comes up, and it’s worth diving into. So working on a date in Jerusalem, Israel for September of this year. And that would involve, potentially, both Goldberg and Sting. And then on the whole ladder, you have the AEW clearance issues, of course. So that’s something that I really hope to put together.”

Goldberg told 97.3 The Ticket last month that he was looking into a self-promoted retirement tour. He noted that WWE promised him a retirement match after he agreed to face Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber 2022 but the company has not followed through on the deal.

As for Sting’s possible involvement, the 64-year-old noted in an interview with D Magazine in January that his AEW contract expires sometime in 2023. When his deal is up, Sting plans to retire.

Bassman also mentioned that he’s been in contact with Goldberg’s agent, Barry Bloom, regarding a potential event or tour. Still, Bassman would not be surprised if Goldberg ends up back in WWE.

Bassman continued:

“Now, only because I’ve been in touch actively with Bill, and then also with his agent, Barry Bloom, who is a longtime good friend. They are working on exactly what you described. But to my knowledge, it still needs to all be nailed down. That said, I would not be surprised to see Bill end up back in WWE for something massive.”

AEW’s Wardlow: ‘It does not get bigger than Wardlow vs. Goldberg’

Wardlow says wrestling Goldberg is a “dream monster match” of his.

The TNT Champion was interviewed by WhatCulture at WrestleCon recently and spoke about having interacted with Goldberg at the convention.

Wardlow said:

Goldberg did walk through just a minute ago and we exchanged words. I don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes but we both mutually agreed that if the opportunity comes, we would love to see who really is next.

He continued to list Goldberg amongst other all-time great “monsters” in wrestling, saying:

Batista, Lesnar, Goldberg, I put those three in the same category of dream monster matches. I mean, we just heard Ward-low [chants], we haven’t heard that since Goldberg so I think Wardlow vs. Goldberg, man, it doesn’t get bigger than that. It does not get bigger than Wardlow vs. Goldberg.

Asked about potentially retiring Goldberg, Wardlow responded:

If it comes down to Wardlow as the man to retire Goldberg, I can die peacefully.

It was reported last month that Goldberg’s WWE contract had expired and the 56-year-old is now a free agent. This led to speculation regarding what could be next for the Hall of Famer, including possibly signing with AEW.

When asked about Goldberg’s free agency recently, AEW president Tony Khan said, “It’s interesting to hear that he is a free agent, so that’s something to follow. He’s one of the biggest names in wrestling and certainly will be something else to keep an eye on for us.”

During a recent radio appearance, Goldberg said that he wants to have a proper retirement match. He noted that he is leaning toward a self-funded four-city tour to end his career.

Goldberg said:

So, if I go on a world tour and promote it myself, that’s a possibility. Hey, I’m a businessman and I’m fortunately in the position, I firmly believe, to where I can still make it happen. At the end of the day, like I said, I do believe that my character deserves a proper send-off and until that happens, I don’t believe I’m hanging them up. So, anything and everything is an option.

AEW’s Tony Khan: Goldberg free agent status ‘interesting to hear’

The news that Bill Goldberg is free and clear of his WWE contract has caught the attention of AEW & ROH head Tony Khan.

In an interview with The Bet Las Vegas & Sporting Tribune hyping up ticket sales for AEW Double or Nothing, Khan was asked about his interest in the free agent who he has got to know partially through charitable ties via Goldberg’s family in Jacksonville, Florida.

“I have a lot of respect for Bill. I think Bill Goldberg is a great professional athlete and has had a great career in pro wrestling and is a very nice person,” he said. “He’s a household name in pro wrestling, so it’s interesting to hear that he is a free agent so that’s something to follow. He’s one of the biggest names in wrestling and certainly will be something else to keep an eye on for us.”

“Bill is an exceptionally exciting name and one of the biggest names in the sport. It’s certainly a big thing for us to pay attention to. I would take notice of that. It’s interesting,” he continued.

On Monday, Fightful reported that the 53-year-old’s WWE contract expired at the end of 2022. Goldberg first returned to WWE in 2016 after 12 years away, defeating Brock Lesnar in under 90 seconds at Survivor Series. He would wrestle 11 more times over the six years that followed  — a run that saw him win the WWE Universal title twice.

His last match came at last February’s Elimination Chamber in Saudi Arabia, losing to current undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.

Mercedes Mone comments

Khan was also asked about IWGP Women’s Champion Mercedes Mone’s recent comments where she said she “gotta get that phone call from Unc” regarding potentially appearing at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door II.

“It’s a very encouraging thing to hear. I have so much respect for Mercedes. I think she’s such a great pro wrestler and certainly one of the best in the world. Any wrestling company in the world, including AEW, is fortunate to have Mercedes. Currently, she is the world champion for our partner NJPW and I think she’s a great champion for them.

“I’m glad she brought up Forbidden Door as it’s going to be an exciting event. Certainly the shadow of Mercedes is looming large in NJPW right now. When AEW and NJPW clash at Forbidden Door, it will be very interesting to see what happens. She’s certainly one of their top stars and it makes for a very interesting situation going into Forbidden Door.”

Goldberg says he’s ‘done apologizing’ to Bret Hart

Goldberg is all done apologizing to Bret Hart.

The WWE Hall-of-Famer appeared on Talk is Jericho and spoke about Hart’s criticism of Goldberg regarding their Starrcade 99 match that left Hart with a concussion and led to the end of his in-ring career.

“He’s an idol to anybody and everybody who would have ever been in this business. I’m a human being like everybody else and there was absolutely no malicious intent whatsoever, none, zero,” Goldberg said.

“Does it bother me? Yeah, I’ll take it to my grave. But also, I got to say, and I’m kind of at a turning point, I’m done saying, ‘I’m sorry.’ I’ve said it a million times and I’m not going to continue to tear myself down, I’m done. I said, ‘I’m sorry,’ if he can’t accept my apology, it is what it is, you’ve got to move on and I’ve moved on.”

During Goldberg’s appearance on Chris Jericho’s podcast, the two also discussed a physical confrontation they got into during Goldberg’s first turn in WWE. Jericho believes that others were trying to pit the two of them against each other.

“I firmly believe that we had our backstage brew ha ha, scuffle backstage, that was manipulated, I think, by other people to kind of pit us against each other,” Jericho said on the show.

“I don’t believe that one was because of the true animosity you and I had for each other, it was a stage that was set by other people and we just followed out the storyline,” Goldberg added. “I will apologize to the end of my days for that.”

“Me too,” Jericho responded. “That was not something I was very proud about either, especially the fact that it was online 20 minutes later. That’s why I was like, ‘this was all a setup’ and we fell for it.”

Goldberg still under WWE contract, says ‘waiting for that one call to happen’

Goldberg is still under contract for WWE, and is waiting for the next call.

In an interview with The New York Post, Goldberg said he was still under contract with the company and noted he was in “pretty damn good shape” right now.

“I’m still waiting for that one [call] to happen one of these days,” Goldberg said. “But I suppose you never retire in the wrestling world until you’re dead, so who knows.”

He also revealed that his shoulder was injured prior to his match against Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber back in February. However, he said that he hasn’t gotten it “cut on because you never know when the phone’s gonna ring”. Goldberg said that his shoulder has been “absolutely destroyed over the past four or five years,” and was able to “hide it from everybody”. The shoulder injury was severe enough to the point where he couldn’t hold a five-pound weight. He has instead spent time rehabbing his shoulder.

“I have worked my ass off day, after day, after day to get to a point where I feel almost normal again,” he said. “I just kind of needed that break. I needed the mental focus of understanding that surgery wasn’t an option at the time and I needed to put my ass to the grindstone.”

Goldberg has only wrestled once this year, losing to Reigns at Elimination Chamber. In 2021, he worked three dates, losing to Drew McIntyre at the Royal Rumble and Bobby Lashley at SummerSlam. He defeated Lashley in a rematch at Crown Jewel in October.

DragonKing Dark: The death of WCW

Continuing our 100 darkest moments in pop culture history, I return to the world of sports entertainment (pro wrestling) to find out how one company became the most profitable and successful wrestling company in the world and then sank over half of genre with it.

The death of WCW is an amazing account of how to literally run off half of the entire fanbase of a very popular pop culture genre with a bad product.

Goldberg confirms he has one match remaining on WWE contract

Bill Goldberg has one match remaining on his WWE contract, confirmed by the former WWE and WCW star Tuesday on the Pat McAfee Show.

McAfee asked him how many more years Vince McMahon was going to call him while he was drunk at parties and Goldberg replied by laughing and confirming that he had just one more match remaining on his deal.

The 55-year-old didn’t indicate when he would like that match to take place or who he would like it to be against although current WWE Champion Big E was pushing for the match at October’s Crown Jewel. Goldberg said he would be interested.

It’s also unknown whether Goldberg wants to continue wrestling after the final contracted bout.

After a two-year absence, Goldberg re-signed with the company in 2019 for a multi-year, eight-match deal — three of which have been in Saudi Arabia.

He wrestled the Undertaker in a widely-panned bout at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia that June, documented in Undertaker’s Last Ride series. He then defeated The Fiend for the Universal title the following February at another Super ShowDown event before losing it to Braun Strowman at the closed-set WrestleMania two months later. Strowman was a fill-in for Roman Reigns who opted to remain at home during the early part of the pandemic.

In January of this year, he returned to unsuccessfully challenge then-champion Drew McIntyre for the WWE title at the Royal Rumble before also unsuccessfully challenging then-champion Bobby Lashley for the Universal title at SummerSlam.

Goldberg got revenge by beating Lashley in a no holds barred, falls count anywhere match at WWE’s return to Saudi Arabia in October.

Report: Goldberg returning to WWE Raw on Monday

WWE’s first episode of Raw back in front of fans could have a major star return, according to a report.

Fightful Select reports that as of today, Goldberg is scheduled to return to WWE Raw on Monday’s episode at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The Fightful report also states that WWE’s current plan is to have Goldberg face Bobby Lashley for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam on Saturday, August 21 at Allegiant Stadium in Nevada. The report also states that Goldberg’s WWE contract runs through 2022 and calls for two matches per year.

Goldberg’s last WWE appearance came at Royal Rumble 2021 on January 31. He challenged Drew McIntyre for the WWE title on that show in a losing effort.

Goldberg wrestled twice in 2020, defeating The Fiend for the Universal title at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia in February, then dropping the title to Braun Strowman on night one of WrestleMania 36.

Goldberg also wrestled twice in 2019. He lost to The Undertaker at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia in June, then defeated Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam in Toronto.

F4W NEWSLETTER: Divisive main event headlines AEW Full Gear

Joseph Currier looks at the reactions to Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega’s unsanctioned match.

AEW’s first pay-per-view since debuting on weekly television was headlined by what will likely end up being the most divisive match of the year.

For some, Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega’s unsanctioned lights out match at Full Gear was a hardcore classic. To others, it was a gratuitously violent and long match that was a misstep for AEW. They wrestled for over 38 minutes and did everything they could to try and have the epic hardcore match that its biggest fans thought it was. A board covered in mouse traps, a chain, a screwdriver, glass, barbed wire, and a barbed wire spider web were just some of the weapons used. By the end of the match, part of the ring was deconstructed — and a Paradigm Shift DDT on the exposed wood finally put an end to things and gave Moxley the win.

Every move AEW has made in its brief history has been overanalyzed to the point of exhaustion. Each positive and negative moment has probably been assigned too much importance. But AEW is defining its identity over the course of the promotion’s first year. Moxley vs. Omega is now always going to be part of that. Full Gear was an opportunity for AEW to put their best foot forward to an audience that has sampled their first six weeks of TV. While it’s likely that some things were gimmicked and Moxley vs. Omega wasn’t quite as violent as it came off as, AEW not only didn’t shy away from the “blood and guts” criticism that Vince McMahon leveled at them — they leaned into it.
