Four new participants announced for WWE Royal Rumble

Four new participants have been confirmed for this year’s men’s Royal Rumble match.

Happy Corbin, Madcap Moss, Sami Zayn, and Kofi Kingston have been added to the lineup for the men’s Rumble, bringing the number of announced participants up to 14. Angelo Dawkins, Montez Ford, Rey Mysterio, Dominik Mysterio, Austin Theory, “Jackass” star Johnny Knoxville, Sheamus, Damian Priest, AJ Styles, and Big E have also been confirmed for the match.

There are still 16 open spots for the men’s Rumble.

On tonight’s SmackDown, Kingston read a proclamation from Xavier Woods announcing that Woods wouldn’t be able to be in the Royal Rumble this year due to his torn plantaris injury. Woods said the Rumble still needed royal representation, so Kingston would be in the match.

Moss defeated Kingston in a singles match on SmackDown tonight.

Zayn has been feuding with Knoxville leading into the Royal Rumble. Zayn is also the number one contender to Shinsuke Nakamura’s Intercontinental title.

Mickie James WWE Royal Rumble appearance originally planned as a surprise

Impact Knockouts Champion Mickie James’ upcoming appearance in the women’s WWE Royal Rumble match was originally planned to be a surprise.

James went into detail with Ariel Helwani Friday about how the appearance came out and about the infamous delivery of her old gear in a trash bag.

James said the ball got rolling a few weeks ago as WWE’s John Laurinaitis called Impact’s Scott D’Amore to gauge James’ interest in returning for the night. D’Amore then called her and she was “immediately excited” with no hard feelings about the fallout from being released and her belongings packaged up in a trash bag

She said that since most fans bring that incident up when it comes to her WWE runs, it will be “great to have that not be the last thing” they think about.

“It’s amazing what can happen in a year,” she said.

James said her appearance in the Rumble was initially talked about as a surprise and that she was out shopping for a guitar on the Friday before her Hard to Kill match with Deonna Purrazzo when she found out.

She said Laurinaitis and WWE’s camp wanted to get the word out there and make it part of the Friday Rumble announcement on Fox so it all worked out.

“The response from the announcement has blown my mind,” she said, adding she had some apprehension that the timing would take away from the Purrazzo match the next night.

She is planning on walking out with the Knockouts title and to her current “Hardcore Country” entrance song for the match.

She kayfabed whether this is a one-off appearance, but said her dream would be to work with Charlotte Flair.

She has maintained a good relationship with WWE following the trash bag incident, saying she “personally wasn’t as offended as the rest of the world was” and that her posting the picture was initially meant to be sarcastic. Some good came out of the situation as released talent’s gear and belongings will no longer be sent in that fashion.

James said she never was reached out directly to by AEW following her release, but said that people knew she wanted to work with husband Nick Aldis in the NWA and to do the Empower pay-per-view. She said she didn’t want to sign a multi-year deal because of all of her outside projects and family life.

Raw Women’s title match official for WWE Royal Rumble

Becky Lynch has her Royal Rumble challenger.

It will be Lynch vs. Doudrop for the Raw Women’s Championship at the Royal Rumble on Saturday, January 29. Doudrop became the number one contender to Lynch’s title by defeating Liv Morgan and Bianca Belair in a triple threat match in the main event of tonight’s Raw.

The number one contender’s match included interference by Lynch. As Belair was about to get the victory after hitting the KOD on Morgan, Lynch broke up the pin. Doudrop then gave Morgan a Banzai Drop to win the match as Belair was focused on Lynch.

Lynch acted like she was going to give Doudrop a handshake after the match, but she slapped Doudrop in the face instead. Lynch then went to hit the Manhandle Slam, but Doudrop powered out and pushed Lynch out of the ring.

Lynch was on commentary for the number one contender’s match. Before it started, she cut a promo giving backhanded compliments to Belair and Morgan. Lynch gave Doudrop respect for being a fellow Celt who takes what she wants. Lynch said the three of them were fighting for the right to one day be able to tell their grandchildren that they lost to Big Time Becky Lynch.

On last week’s Raw, Doudrop went to Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville and demanded to be in the Raw Women’s Championship picture. She complained about the same women always getting opportunities.

The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis will be the host of this year’s Royal Rumble. The updated card for the pay-per-view is listed below:

  • Men’s Royal Rumble match
  • Women’s Royal Rumble match
  • WWE Champion Brock Lesnar defends against Bobby Lashley
  • Universal Champion Roman Reigns defends against Seth Rollins
  • Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch defends against Doudrop
  • Mixed tag match: Edge & Beth Phoenix vs. The Miz & Maryse

Big E declares for WWE Royal Rumble

Big E is the latest to declare himself for this year’s Royal Rumble.

The former WWE Champion declared himself as an entrant in the men’s Royal Rumble match that will take place on January 29. He did so during a Seth Rollins promo that eventually led to a match.

Big E said that his one goal was to headline WrestleMania and beat Rollins to win the title. Rollins said that was doubtful and that Big E couldn’t beat him. Big E suggested they have a match. Rollins initially rejected the idea, but eventually accepted. Rollins won the match after a curb stomp.

Other participants already announced for the men’s Royal Rumble match include Angelo Dawkins, Montez Ford, Rey Mysterio, Dominik Mysterio, Austin Theory, Johnny Knoxille of Jackass fame, Sheamus, Damian Priest, and AJ Styles.

Entrants for the women’s Royal Rumble match so far include Rhea Ripley, Nikki A.S.H., Dana Brooke, Carmella, Queen Zelina, Tamina, Shotzi, Natalya, Aliyah, Naomi, Shayna Baszler, Charlotte Flair, The Bella Twins, Lita, Michelle McCool, Kelly Kelly, Summer Rae, and Mickie James.

United States Champion Damian Priest is the latest wrestler to declare for the 2022 Royal Rumble.

Priest posted a video today announcing that he’ll be in this year’s men’s Royal Rumble match:

Priest said he made an immediate impact when he debuted in the 2021 Royal Rumble, and the way he’ll upstage that is by winning the Rumble this year. Priest said he’ll still be United States Champion after WrestleMania — the only question is what other title he’ll be holding too: the WWE Championship or the Universal Championship.

At SummerSlam last August, Priest defeated Sheamus to win the United States title. Priest retained the title against Dolph Ziggler on Raw last week.

Impact comments on Mickie James WWE Royal Rumble announcement

On Friday night’s SmackDown, it was announced that Mickie James will be returning to WWE to take part in this year’s women’s Royal Rumble match.

The announcement came with the acknowledgment that James is the current Impact Wrestling Knockouts Champion. It was mentioned by Pat McAfee on commentary, and WWE also referred to James as the Impact Knockouts Champion on social media.

Impact Wrestling’s website posted an article about the announcement after it was made. The article included a quote from Impact Wrestling executive vice president Scott D’Amore.

“WWE wanted it, Mickie wanted it and IMPACT Wrestling’s philosophy is always to work with other major promotions to create buzz for the fans, ” D’Amore said. “Everything is signed and agreed with WWE and IMPACT Wrestling – the only question is whether or not Mickie will enter one of WWE’s most historic annual matches as the reigning Knockouts World Champion.”

James will defend her Knockouts title against Deonna Purrazzo in a Texas death match at tonight’s Impact Wrestling Hard to Kill pay-per-view.

James, who was released by WWE during the company’s April 2021 roster cuts, also made an Instagram post commenting on the upcoming Royal Rumble appearance:

Sheamus added to WWE men’s Royal Rumble match

A new participant has been added to this year’s men’s Royal Rumble match.

During Friday’s SmackDown, it was announced that Sheamus will be taking part in the men’s Rumble. He joins Angelo Dawkins, Montez Ford, Rey Mysterio, Dominik Mysterio, Austin Theory, and “Jackass” star Johnny Knoxville as the first seven participants to be confirmed for the match.

Sheamus was in action on the pre-show for WWE’s Day 1 pay-per-view last Saturday, teaming with Ridge Holland to defeat Cesaro & Ricochet. It was essentially a handicap match after Holland suffered a broken nose shortly after the bout started.

The Royal Rumble is being held at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis on Saturday, January 29. WWE has already announced 19 of the 30 wrestlers who will be taking part in the women’s Royal Rumble match.

The women’s Royal Rumble entrants that have been confirmed are: Rhea Ripley, Nikki A.S.H., Nikki Bella, Brie Bella, Shotzi, Natalya, Michelle McCool, Dana Brooke, Carmella, Zelina Vega, Mickie James, Tamina, Kelly Kelly, Aliyah, Summer Rae, Naomi, Shayna Baszler, Lita, and SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair.

Seth Rollins to challenge for Universal title at WWE Royal Rumble

Former Shield stablemates will face off for the Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble.

At the end of Friday’s episode of SmackDown, it was revealed that Seth Rollins will challenge for Roman Reigns’ Universal title at the Royal Rumble. The pay-per-view is taking place at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis on Saturday, January 29.

There was a storyline on Friday’s show where Adam Pearce said WWE management informed him that he needed to choose Reigns’ Royal Rumble opponent before the end of the night. The episode closed with Reigns receiving a knock on his door. He told the person to come in — and it was revealed to be Rollins. Rollins laughed hysterically, and Reigns looked befuddled.

Rollins is a member of the Raw roster. He was involved in the fatal five-way match at Day 1 last Saturday where Brock Lesnar pinned Big E to win the WWE Championship.

Reigns returned to SmackDown this week after missing Day 1 due to testing positive for COVID-19. He was originally scheduled to defend his title against Lesnar in the main event of the PPV.

There was a face-to-face confrontation between Reigns and Lesnar on SmackDown. Lesnar told Reigns during the segment that he wanted to face him in a title vs. title match. Reigns said it was a good idea, but it wasn’t Reigns’ idea. Reigns said this is his show and they do what he says. Reigns also said that he doesn’t do business with people who do business with trash like Paul Heyman.

Heyman was upset that Reigns would talk to him that way. Heyman said Reigns was his Tribal Chief and he worshipped the ground Reigns walked on when they worked together. Lesnar told Heyman to shut up, and Reigns told Lesnar not to talk to Heyman like that. Heyman tried to de-escalate the tensions between Reigns and Lesnar, but Reigns gave Lesnar a Superman punch when Lesnar’s attention was turned away.

The updated card for the Royal Rumble is listed below:

  • Men’s Royal Rumble match
  • Women’s Royal Rumble match
  • WWE Champion Brock Lesnar defends against Bobby Lashley
  • Universal Champion Roman Reigns defends against Seth Rollins
  • Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch defends against either Liv Morgan, Bianca Belair, or Doudrop (Morgan, Belair, and Doudrop are facing off in a number one contender’s match on Monday’s Raw)
  • Mixed tag match: Edge & Beth Phoenix vs. The Miz & Maryse

WWE announces women’s Royal Rumble entrants: Mickie James, Bellas, Charlotte, more

WWE has announced 19 of the 30 entrants who will be competing in this year’s women’s Royal Rumble match.

The entrants were revealed during a promo by Charlotte Flair on tonight’s SmackDown. Despite being the SmackDown Women’s Champion, Charlotte declared that she will be taking part in the Rumble match. Charlotte said she’ll be the first champion to win the Royal Rumble and choose her WrestleMania challenger.

Charlotte announced that Mickie James, Nikki & Brie Bella, Michelle McCool, Kelly Kelly, Summer Rae, and Lita will be returning for the women’s Royal Rumble. WWE acknowledged both on television and on social media that James is the current Impact Wrestling Knockouts Champion.

James will defend her Knockouts title against Deonna Purrazzo in a Texas death match at Impact Wrestling’s Hard to Kill pay-per-view this Saturday.

James was released by WWE during the company’s April 2021 roster cuts.

Rhea Ripley, Nikki A.S.H., Shotzi, Natalya, Dana Brooke, Carmella, Zelina Vega, Tamina, Aliyah, Naomi, and Shayna Baszler have also been announced for the women’s Royal Rumble match.

The Royal Rumble is taking place at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis on Saturday, January 29. Angelo Dawkins, Montez Ford, Rey Mysterio, Dominik Mysterio, Austin Theory, “Jackass” star Johnny Knoxville, and Sheamus are the first seven participants to be confirmed for the men’s Rumble match.

WWE announces five new participants for men’s Royal Rumble

The first six participants have been confirmed for this year’s men’s Royal Rumble match.

During tonight’s episode of Raw, WWE confirmed five more entrants for the men’s Rumble. They are: The Street Profits’ Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford, Rey Mysterio, Dominik Mysterio, and Austin Theory. “Jackass” star Johnny Knoxville will also be taking part in the match.

The Street Profits and The Mysterios each cut promos on Raw tonight declaring that they’ll be in the Royal Rumble. Theory was informed that he’d be in the match by Vince McMahon.

The Royal Rumble is taking place at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis on Saturday, January 29. WWE hasn’t yet announced any of the participants for the women’s Royal Rumble match.

Here’s the updated card for the Royal Rumble:

  • Men’s Royal Rumble match
  • Women’s Royal Rumble match
  • WWE Champion Brock Lesnar defends against Bobby Lashley

  • Mixed tag match: Edge & Beth Phoenix vs. The Miz & Maryse

Brock Lesnar vs. Bobby Lashley official for WWE Royal Rumble

WWE has set a date for the first-ever one-on-one match between Brock Lesnar and Bobby Lashley.

Lesnar will defend his WWE Championship against Lashley at the Royal Rumble on Saturday, January 29. Lashley getting the title shot was made official when he defeated Big E, Seth Rollins, and Kevin Owens in a fatal four-way number one contender’s match in the main event of tonight’s Raw.

Lashley pinned Owens to win the number one contender’s match. Big E and Rollins were also speared by Lashley leading into the finish.

Lesnar became WWE Champion by defeating Big E, Rollins, Owens, and Lashley in a fatal five-way match at Day 1 last Saturday. Lesnar was added to the match at the last minute after Roman Reigns tested positive for COVID-19. Reigns had been scheduled to defend his Universal Championship against Lesnar at Day 1.

At Day 1, Lashley was the only wrestler in the match that Lesnar didn’t hit the F-5 on. Lashley gave Lesnar a spear through the barricade at one point in the match, and there was also a spot where Lashley got a near fall after hitting a spear on Lesnar in the ring.

When asked for comment after Lashley’s win tonight, Lesnar didn’t acknowledge Lashley. Lesnar said that he’d see Reigns on SmackDown this Friday night.

Lesnar reunited with Paul Heyman during the opening segment of tonight’s Raw.

The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis will be the host of this year’s Royal Rumble. Here’s the updated card for the pay-per-view:

  • Men’s Royal Rumble match
  • Women’s Royal Rumble match
  • WWE Champion Brock Lesnar defends against Bobby Lashley
  • Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch defends against either Liv Morgan, Bianca Belair, or Doudrop (Morgan, Belair, and Doudrop will face off in a triple threat match on Raw next week to determine Lynch’s Royal Rumble challenger)
  • Mixed tag match: Edge & Beth Phoenix vs. The Miz & Maryse

‘Jackass’ star Johnny Knoxville declares WWE Royal Rumble entry

The first talent has declared their entry for the 2022 WWE Royal Rumble, but that talent is not a professional wrestler.

Johnny Knoxville of Jackass fame declared his entry into the Royal Rumble match in a video posted today on his Instagram account, insulting Big E and Roman Reigns, plus stating that WWE did not have any wrestlers big enough to throw him out of the Rumble match.

WWE’s official Instagram account replied to the declaration:

“Good luck @johnnyknoxville!!”

Knoxville posted the video with the caption:

“Happy New Year’s Day and love to everyone. I have a big announcement that I have been dying to get off of my chest. I spent a lot of times over the holiday thinking about how i wanted to start off my 2022, and I decided I want to do it kicking ass and taking names. And the best way to do that i feel is making a run for the Rumble, that’s right @WWE’s Royal Rumble. Training starts today, not that I will need a lot of it because I have seen the WWE’s current roster and it’s laughable to think anyone can throw me over the top rope. LAUGHABLE! I will be channeling my wrestling heroes like @therock, Abdullah the Butcher and the great Gorilla Monsoon. The way I’m looking at it I am giving myself a %100 chance of winning. What chance do you think I have? Sincerely, Johnny Knoxville, World Champ #roadtowrestlemania #royalrumble #wwe #jackassforever”

This year’s Royal Rumble will take place on Saturday, January 29. Knoxville’s next film, Jackass Forever, is scheduled for a February 4 release.

Knoxville and the cast of the upcoming Jackass Forever film were backstage at WWE SmackDown in Los Angeles last month. The Jackass group was scheduled for a SummerSlam match in 2007, but Knoxville pulled out of the match in the wake of the Chris Benoit murder-suicide. Knoxville returned to the company in 2008 for angles with Great Khali and Beth Phoenix,, then again in 2010 during Raw’s guest host era.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio talking Raw, ratings, G-1 as well as taking you email questions to [email protected]

I wouldn’t worry much about Raw ratings tonight. Besides the usual Monday Night Football game (Indianapolis Colts vs. Baltimore Ravens), there are Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Devil Rays and San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers baseball playoff games. Baseball numbers are way up and are going against almost every wrestling show for the next few weeks.

Raw is from the Chase Center in San Francisco, head-to-head with the Giants-Dodgers. The advance was weak going in and I can see some people with tickets not coming. Main event is Charlotte Flair & Becky Lynch vs. Sasha Banks & Bianca Belair, plus in King of the Ring, Ricochet vs. Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston vs. Jinder Mahal, and Queen’s Crown has Doudrop vs. Natalya and Shayna Baszler vs. Dana Brooke. Big E & Riddle & Randy Orton vs. Bobby Lashley & A.J. Styles & Omos is the announced dark match main event.

UFC is looking at doing a Jorge Masvidal vs. Leon Edwards fight on its 12/11 PPV show. If that goes through, then the Brandon Moreno flyweight title defense against former champion Deiveson Figueiredo will be moved from that show to 1/22.  Edwards is listed as a -275 favorite.

G1 at 5:30 a.m. Eastern tomorrow morning from Sendai’s Xebio Arena

  • Hiromu Takahashi vs. Ryohei Oiwa non-tournament
  • Taichi vs. Tama Tonga
  • Sanada vs. Yoshi-Hashi

A quick note that Hall of Fame ballots have not been sent out yet. I’ve said this on some shows. It’s very time consuming and my schedule is pretty brutal right now.

Although it has been known for some time, ROH officially announced this year’s Final Battle for 12/11 at the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena in Baltimore. It’s the company’s next show with paying spectators as they were still doing empty arena TV tapings to keep results secret.

WWE has revealed the host city for the 2022 Royal Rumble.

It was announced today that The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis will host next year’s Royal Rumble on Saturday, January 29, 2022. The pay-per-view will be headlined by the men’s and women’s Royal Rumble matches.

WWE noted that this will be the largest venue to host the Royal Rumble in the event’s 30-plus year history. The Dome at America’s Center was formerly the home of the NFL’s St. Louis Rams before the team was moved to Los Angeles. The St. Louis BattleHawks played at the venue in Vince McMahon’s 2020 XFL revival.

St. Louis has hosted the Royal Rumble once before, with the event being held at the Enterprise Center in 2012.

Tickets for Royal Rumble 2022 will go on sale to the general public at 11 a.m. Eastern time on Friday, October 15. WWE has also opened up registration for those interested in ticket pre-sale information.

“WWE has a rich history in St. Louis and we are excited to bring Royal Rumble to the Dome at America’s Center, a venue that has hosted countless large-scale sports and entertainment events,” said John P. Saboor, WWE Executive Vice President of Special Events. “We look forward to giving the WWE Universe an opportunity to experience all that St. Louis has to offer.”

“The City of St. Louis is thrilled to host Royal Rumble at the Dome at America’s Center in January,” said St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones. “St. Louis has the best sports scene in the country, and Royal Rumble will enhance it even more. This event is an incredible opportunity for our city, bringing WWE fans from across the nation to St. Louis and helping keep our downtown vibrant during the winter season.”

This is the second WWE PPV that will be taking place in January 2022. On New Year’s Day, the State Farm Arena in Atlanta will host “WWE Day 1.” That PPV is also being held on a Saturday.
