Kevin Owens replacing Rey Mysterio at NASCAR event

Kevin Owens is set to make an appearance that his fellow WWE star Rey Mysterio was previously scheduled for.

At NASCAR’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 this Saturday night, Owens will serve as the grand marshal. The race is taking place at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona, Florida, which is the state where Owens resides.

“UPDATE: Stepping in for Rey Mysterio, we’re excited to welcome @FightOwensFight as the Grand Marshal for tomorrow night’s #CokeZeroSugar400!,” NASCAR’s announcement said.

A reason for the swap was not given. Mysterio had tweeted yesterday that he was honored to be the grand marshal for the event.

Both Mysterio and Owens are currently out of action with issues that prevented them from competing at WrestleMania 41. A torn groin has sidelined Mysterio since April, but he could be back soon if the initial expected timeframe for his return proves to be correct. Mysterio recently made an appearance at Lucha Libre AAA’s Triplemania, where he inducted Konnan into the AAA Hall of Fame.

Owens, who has not wrestled since March, underwent successful neck surgery last month.

Rey Mysterio reacts to chants for Alberto El Patron at Triplemania

AAA fans would like to see Alberto El Patron return to the promotion.

Last night during Triplemania, fans chanted for El Patron as Rey Mysterio was in the ring to induct Konnan into the AAA Hall of Fame. Mysterio acknowledged the chants and responded in Spanish, telling the crowd something to the effect of, “I’ll bring him. Wait on me.”

A clip of Mysterio responding to the chants is available here and also at the end of this article.

El Patron was recently banished from the promotion after losing to El Mesias at AAA’s show in Mexico City on July 25. The match carried the stipulation that if El Patron lost, he would have to leave the company.

El Patron lost the AAA Mega Championship to El Hijo del Vikingo on May 31, a little over a month after WWE announced it was purhcasing the company. Earlier this month, our own Dave Meltzer addressed his standing with WWE in the August 4, 2025, edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Meltzer wrote:

“As of right now, there are no plans for Alberto El Patron in the U.S. market. But that could change. The belief is he will return to AAA soon. There are those in WWE who do want him on the main roster as they see his work as excellent in AAA (his matches are nothing but he does carry himself like a major superstar), since he was the most over guy and see him now as a guy who can be a major heel on the main roster or the top face on the AAA roster. However there is the negative baggage, including the social media reaction to him. That led to them taking the title off him and going with El Hijo del Vikingo, who the original idea would be the world champion and face of the Mexico promotion and also get exposure on major WWE television in an initial idea.”

Rey Mysterio to induct Konnan into AAA Hall of Fame

Rey Mysterio is set to play a role at Lucha Libre AAA Triplemania later this month, inducting one of his best friends into the company’s Hall of Fame.

Mysterio sent out a tweet today announcing that he will induct Konnan into the AAA Hall of Fame at Triplemania on Saturday, August 16. The show is taking place in Mexico City and will air live on WWE’s YouTube channel in both English and Spanish.

“It’s an honor for me to induct my brother @Konnan5150 into the Hall of Fame this August 16th at TripleMania!! @luchalibreaaa,” Mysterio wrote.

The AAA Hall of Fame was first established in 2007 and includes Mysterio as a member.

Konnan has been a friend and mentor to Mysterio for decades, and Mysterio is now returning the favor for Konnan after Konnan helped induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023.

A superstar in Mexico, Konnan also had success in the United States for WCW. He’s been a key backstage player in Mexico as the booker of AAA.

WWE announced its acquisition of AAA this April ahead of the companies presenting a Worlds Collide event together in Los Angeles in June. Konnan was one of the commentators for the show, which also featured an appearance by Mysterio. A torn groin has sidelined Mysterio since April, but he could be back soon with Mysterio targeting August for a return to the ring.

Rey’s son Dominik Mysterio will be competing in the main event of Triplemania. It’s a four-way match with El Hijo del Vikingo defending the AAA Mega Championship against Dominik, Dragon Lee, and El Grande Americano.

Jelly Roll appearance, Tag Team title match set for next WWE SmackDown

For the first time since winning the WWE Tag Team titles a week ago, the first defense for The Wyatt Sicks will come on next week’s edition of SmackDown.

Made during Friday’s show, Rey Mysterio & Andrade will challenge Dexter Lumis & Joe Gacy for the gold they won from The Street Profits. The duo earned the shot in a fatal four-way as they defeated three sets of former champions in #DIY, Fraxiom and the Motor City Machine Guns.

Mysterio last held the gold with Dominik Mysterio in 2021 while Andrade has never held WWE tag team gold.

Jelly Roll, Logan Paul, Randy Orton and Drew McIntyre will all be on hand as the build toward their SummerSlam match — and Jelly Roll’s pro wrestling debut — continues.

Ahead of Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair challenging Women’s Tag Team Champions Roxanne Perez & Raquel Rodriguez at SummerSlam, Bliss and Perez will go one-on-one.

Here’s the current lineup for Cleveland, Ohio:

  • Jelly Roll, Randy Orton, Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul appearances
  • WWE Tag Team Champions The Wyatt Sicks (Dexter Lumis & Joe Gacy) defend against Andrade & Rey Fenix
  • Alexa Bliss vs. Roxanne Perez

Rey Mysterio gives update on recovery from torn groin

Rey Mysterio is optimistic that he’ll be back in the ring soon as he progresses in his recovery from a torn groin.

While being interviewed by La Platica, Mysterio said he’s started physical therapy and hopes that he’ll be back in action by August. He suffered the injury during a six-man tag match on SmackDown the night before WrestleMania 41 this April, forcing him out of his scheduled Mania match against El Grande Americano.

“Good, pretty good,” Mysterio responded when asked about his recovery. “Yeah, man. I started my [physical therapy]. Not to mention, I had a busted eardrum as well, so I fixed that during my time off. I’m on the road to recovery. I should be back hopefully by August.”

Mysterio said — as is usually the case — the injury wasn’t caused by a crazy spot. It was just a routine moment in the match when he pushed off with his leg and ended up tearing his groin.

“I stepped in the ring, the guy that I was wrestling stood in front of me, he bailed out the ring underneath the bottom rope and I went to chase him. And when I pushed off with my left leg, I just heard a [tear],” Mysterio said. “Like, ‘That’s it? I tore my groin like that?’ Yeah, usually it happens on the simplest sh*t. But with all the stuff that I do, you would always think that it’s something crazy. No, it’s always the opposite. Always the small stuff.”

The 50-year-old Mysterio told La Platica that he knows retirement is definitely “really close,” but he still loves wrestling and the connection he has with fans. He feels like he got a second wind in his career when his son Dominik Mysterio joined the industry. Dominik is also currently sidelined due to injury but is not expected to miss much time.

Earlier this month, Rey made an appearance at WWE & AAA’s Worlds Collide event, kicking off the show with a promo celebrating the evolution of lucha libre.

Rey Mysterio appears via video at AAA show: ‘The future flies here’

Rey Mysterio appeared via video at Saturday’s AAA event.

While WWE’s purchase of AAA has yet to be finalized, the two companies have begun promoting their joint event, Worlds Collide, set for June 7 at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California.

A video featuring Mysterio promoting the event kicked off Saturday’s show in Mexico City. He says in the video:

“For nearly a century, Lucha Libre has redefined wrestling. And now the whole world is watching AAA and WWE, taking Lucha Libre higher, faster, better, farther. The future flies here.”

LuchaBlog posted the video:

On Friday, LuchaBlog wrote of the situation in AAA amid WWE’s pending purchase:

“To the best of my knowledge, AAA has not sat down its office or wrestlers as a group to explain what’s happening, what’s next and where that leaves the people who are currently working for AAA. That should happen here. There’s a lot of luchadors with question marks for futures, and how AAA treats them publicly and privately will start answering those questions.”

WWE’s pending purchase of AAA was a featured story in this week’s edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Meltzer wrote of the situation:

“AAA will have more money for talent and television production, and could get a huge edge in exposure if TKO can upgrade the media deals for the promotion. The biggest key is how many and how often will WWE send top names, or names that can draw with the right promotion like Rey Mysterio, Penta, Fenix and even American stars to AAA shows.”

AAA Alianzas results for Saturday, May 3, 2025:

  • Chris Carter & Mini Vikingo defeated The Lucha Solos (Arkangel Divino & Ultimo Maldito) and Epydemius Jr. & Murcielago Plateado in the Torneo Alas De Oro 2025 match.
  • Andromeda, Dulce Kanela & Jessy Queen defeated Colmillo De Plata, Drago & Garra De Oro.
  • El Mesias defeated Nino Hamburguesa to retain the AAA Latin American Championship.
  • Las Toxicas (Lady Flammer, Lady Maravilla & La Hiedra) defeated Chik Tormenta, Dalys & Lady Shani.
  • La Parka, Laredo Kid & Octagon Jr. defeated Tokyo Bad Boys (Kento, Nobu San & Takuma).
  • Nueva Generacion Dinamita (Forastero & Sanson) & Alberto El Patron defeated El Hijo del Vikingo, Negro Casas & Pagano.

Rey Mysterio undergoing surgery for torn abductor

Rey Mysterio is having surgery to repair the injury that forced him to miss WWE WrestleMania 41.

In a post to his Instagram stories on Monday, Mysterio informed fans that he’s at the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama to undergo surgery for a torn abductor muscle. Mysterio said he’ll have an update later once surgery is complete.

“I tore my abductor the SmackDown before WrestleMania, and I’m scheduled for surgery today. So I will keep you guys posted,” Mysterio said. “Thank you guys very much, and I will let you guys know once I get out of surgery.”

The injury happened during a six-man tag match on SmackDown where Mysterio, Dragon Lee & Rey Fenix defeated Chad Gable & The Creed Brothers. With Mysterio unable to compete at WrestleMania the next night, Fenix replaced him on the card, losing to Gable’s El Grande Americano character in a singles bout.

Dave Meltzer reported that Mysterio initially wanted to gut it out and still compete at WrestleMania before realizing that would not be able to happen.

WOL: WWE WrestleMania night one preview, Vince McMahon-friendly Hall of Fame ceremony recap

There is so much to cover today on the pre-WrestleMania 41 edition of Wrestling Observer Live.

From Friday’s SmackDown, Rey Mysterio was apparently injured during a trios match so how will it affect his match Saturday with El Grande Americano?

Cody Rhodes left John Cena laying but, other than that, it was kind of an uninspired, by-the-numbers Smackdown go home show for WrestleMania. I discuss that and more.

Plus, an “Everyone Loves Vince” edition of the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, Mariah May updates, Naito and BUSHI speaking at Road to Dontaku night one, and more.

Rey Mysterio is out of WrestleMania 41.

Mysterio teamed with Fenix and Dragon Lee on SmackDown to take on Chad Gable and American Made. During the middle of the match, Julius Creed grabbed Mysterio, injuring him. Fenix and Dragon Lee worked the rest of the match, with Fenix scoring the win for his team.

Dave Meltzer has reported that Mysterio suffered a torn groin.

Mysterio appeared on the pre-show as WWE officially announced that they had purchased AAA, with a Worlds Collide joint show with WWE, NXT, and AAA talent scheduled for June 7 at the Kia Forum.

Update on possible WWE WrestleMania 41 replacement for Rey Mysterio

Update (Saturday afternoon): Michael Cole noted on today’s pre-show that Mysterio is a “game time decision” for tonight’s show.

Rey Mysterio may need to be replaced at WrestleMania after he appeared to suffer an injury on Friday.

Mysterio was teaming with Dragon Lee and Rey Fenix against American Made on SmackDown but spent the final minutes of the match being checked on by WWE medical personnel on the ringside floor. He was later seen hopping on one foot before being helped to the back.

Our own Bryan Alvarez has provided an update on the stiuation to his subscribers on X, writing that Mysterio could be replaced by Dragon Lee in his scheduled match against Chad Gable (as Grande Americano) at night one of WrestleMania.

Alvarez wrote:

“I am told still no word on Rey Mysterio, but Dragon Lee is the likely replacement if he can’t wrestle. They could do Fenix, but my presumption is el Grande needs to win the first match and they probably wouldn’t want to beat Fenix so early.”

Rey Mysterio helped to the back following WWE SmackDown match

Rey Mysterio appeared to suffer an injury during WWE SmackDown.

Friday’s show saw Mysterio team with Rey Fenix and Dragon Lee to take on Chad Gable & The Creed Brothers. At some point during the match Mysterio suffered an injury, as Fenix and Lee worked the final few minutes of the match with Fenix scoring the win following a meteora.

Fan footage showed Mysterio being checked on by WWE medical and his tag team partners. Another video showed Rey Mysterio being helped to the back, first hopping on one leg before ultimately being carried backstage. Mysterio has had knee problems dating back to the 1990s, undergoing several procedures. Last year, he underwent stem cell therapy for his knees, wrists, and left shoulder.

Mysterio is scheduled to face El Grande Americano at WrestleMania 41 Saturday. He and the rest of the LWO have spent the last several weeks feuding with Gable and American Made, who have consistently denied that Gable is Americano under the mask.

Rey Mysterio vs. El Grande Americano added to WWE WrestleMania 41

El Grande Americano will make his WrestleMania debut against Rey Mysterio.

The new match for WrestleMania 41 was announced during Monday’s Raw following a six-man tag team match. Americano, Brutus Creed, and Julius Creed defeated Mysterio’s LWO teammates Dragon Lee, Joaquin Wilde, and Cruz Del Toro on Raw.

Americano used a steel plate in his mask to hit headbutts on Mysterio, who was ringside for the contest, and Lee, leading to the win for American Made.

Later, Mysterio demanded a WrestleMania match against Americano, with Raw GM Adam Pearce agreeing to the contest.

The current lineup for the two-night WrestleMania set for Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas:

WWE WrestleMania 41 night one, Saturday, April 19 —

Rey Mysterio declares for WWE Royal Rumble

Rey Mysterio is entering the Royal Rumble.

At the start of Friday’s SmackDown in San Diego, Mysterio kicked off the show in his hometown where he announced that he was entering the Rumble match. After bringing up his own Royal Rumble win back in 2006, Kevin Owens came out and said he’ll root for Mysterio to win the Royal Rumble match as long as he chooses to face him at WrestleMania. After Mysterio reminded Owens he wasn’t actually champion, Owens yelled at Mysterio who tried to calm him down, saying he was delusional just like his son Dominik. The two got into a brawl that Mysterio got the better of.

Later in the show, the two faced off in a match. Owens earned the victory and after the bout extended his hand to Mysterio, who obliged. However Owens jumped Mysterio and went for the package piledriver when Cody Rhodes came out for the save.

The updated lineup for the Royal Rumble, including an updated list of entrants:

WWE Royal Rumble, Saturday, February 1 —

  • Men’s Royal Rumble match: John Cena, Roman Reigns, CM Punk, Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre, Rey Mysterio

Rey Misterio Sr. – uncle of WWE’s Rey Mysterio – passes away

Rey Misterio Sr. — a Tijuana wrestling legend best known for launching the career of his Hall of Fame nephew — has passed away at 66 years old.

Misterio’s death was announced on Friday through a brief statement one of his sons shared to Facebook. Real name Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, Misterio was a wrestler, trainer, and mentor. He was the uncle of WWE star Rey Mysterio, who became an all-time great after being trained by his uncle and receiving permission to use Rey Misterio Jr. as his wrestling name.

“Friends and family, I regret to inform you that my Father, Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, Rey Misterio Sr. passed away this morning,” Misterio’s son wrote. “Will keep you informed. Thank you.”

Misterio’s cause of death has not been announced, but Super Luchas writes that he had been having health problems for several months and was in a wheelchair for his last public appearances.

Lucha Libre AAA paid tribute to Misterio with company president Marisela Pena sending her condolences to his family, friends, and fans.

Former WCW stars Konnan and Psicosis are among the other wrestlers that Misterio trained. At WCW Starrcade 1990, Misterio & Konnan were partners for a tag team tournament.

“So sorry to hear about the death of the original Rey Misterio (Sr.), Miguel Lopez, at 66, the uncle of the WWE star,” Dave Meltzer tweeted. “In his heyday he was almost like Tijuana’s version of Jerry Lawler in Memphis. As a trainer, his track record matches the best, his nephew, the original Psicosis, Konnan, Halloween and Damian all in the same class.”

Rey Mysterio & Dragon Lee vs. American Made set for WWE Raw

A new match has been announced for Monday’s episode of WWE Raw.

The LWO’s Dragon Lee & Rey Mysterio will wrestle American Made’s Julius & Brutus Creed in a tornado tag team match on the show. It’s a rematch from the October 21 episode when Mysterio & Lee defeated The Creeds to advance in the World Tag Team number one contenders tournament.

The two factions clashed on last week’s show as well when Mysterio and Zelina Vega defeated Chad Gable & Ivy Nile in a mixed tag bout.

From WWE.com:

“The LWO knocked American Made out of the World Tag Team Title No. 1 Contender’s Tournament last month, and Mysterio and Zelina Vega defeated Chad Gable and Ivy Nile in a Mixed Tag Team Match on last week’s Raw. Tired of losing, American Made will get another opportunity at Mysterio and his teammates, this time in an incredible Tornado Tag Team Match where everyone is a legal competitor at all times.”

The updated lineup for the Monday, November 25 WWE Raw:

  • WarGames advantage match: Bianca Belair vs. Nia Jax
  • Bron Breakker vs. Ludwig Kaiser
  • The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) vs. Otis & Akira Tozawa
  • Dragon Lee & Rey Mysterio vs. Julius & Brutus Creed
