MLW SuperFight live results: Low Ki vs. Tom Lawlor title match

MLW’s second live special on beIN Sports takes place tonight from the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

There will be two title matches at tonight’s SuperFight event. After winning a title shot in this past July’s Battle Riot match, “Filthy” Tom Lawlor will finally challenge for Low Ki’s MLW World Heavyweight Championship. Low Ki has been champion since he defeated Shane Strickland for the title in July.

The MLW Tag Team Championship will also be on the line as The Hart Foundation challenge for Pentagon Jr. & Fenix’s titles. This match was originally supposed to happen in December before an injury to Fenix delayed it. Teddy Hart instead defeated Pentagon in a singles match at the December tapings in Miami.

Pentagon & Fenix have been MLW Tag Team Champions since June.

Kotto Brazil vs. Ricky Martinez is also set for tonight. The live special begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

**********

Should be pointed out that no Tony Schiavone tonight so it’s Matt Stryker joining Rich Bonini on commentary

Lucha Brothers (Pentagon Jr and Fenix) vs The NEw Hart Foundation (Teddy Hart and Davey Boy Smith Jr) accomponied by Brian Pillman Jr

Fans were into both teams, chanting BOTH THESE GUYS early. Lucha Brothers took most of the match, which went through a commercial break. Pillman was a non-factor at ringside, at least early.

Lucha Brothers were using double team moves, including a “Mexican Destroyer” (as called by Matt Stryker). Pentagon hit a 2nd oneon the ring apron, the hardest part of the ring, on Teddy Hart and would’ve had a 3 count but Pillman pulled the ref from the ring to break up the count. No disqualification for that one.

The Hart Foundation hit their Doomsday Destroyer on Fenix, after removing the mask of Pentagon, and Teddy Hart got the pin to become a double champion.

WINNER AND NEW MLW WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS – The New Hart Foundation of Davey Boy Smith Jr and Teddy Hart

Good match. Slower than most Lucha Brothers matches but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Despite being crowd favorites early, the fans were not that into the Harts winning the belts.

Lawlor was shown warming up backstage and Low Ki cut a promo going over the last 7 months since winning the MLW title and all the guys he’s beaten. He promised to be more violent than ever before and promised to take “the lion’s mane”. Maybe threatening to cut Lawlor’s hair?

Kotto Brazil vs Ricky Martinez (w/Salina De La Renta)

Brazil was out wearing an eye patch and Martinez came to the ring, mocking him, wearing a blindfold over his head and acting like he couldn’t see.

Brazil did a Tope Con Hilo to the outside on Martinez before the bell and was all over him outside the ring. After a couple of minutes of this, he finally rolled Martinez into the ring and hit a top rope dropkick and the match was officially started. De La Renta grabbed Brazil’s foot to turn the tide and Martinez knocked him outside the ring and into the metal barriers outside.

Kotto did a dive to the outside onto Martinez, who caught him and slammed him onto the apron and then picked him up and slammed him on the floor. Martinez took over on the inside of the ring for the next several minutes. Lots of gratioutous shots of De La Renta’s cleavage during the heat spots.

Brazil turned things around by throwing Martinez off the top rope made a nice comeback but the crowd wasn’t that into it so it was kind of flat (unlike De La Renta). Brazil hit a nice frog splash, which got a near pin. Martinez hit an electric chair drop and a wheelchair German suplex but that combination also only got a two count. Light chants for Kotto at this point, with De La Renta screaming SHUT UP at the dozen or so fans who started the chant.

Martinez rolled out of the ring after being hit by a German suplex from Kotto but Brazil went after him and rolled him back in. Martinez pulled the eye patch off of Brazil and then hit him with a knee to the face for a 2. Brazil hit a destroyer (a Haitian Destroyer, called by Bonini) but the ref was distracted by De La Renta. Brazil went after her. Martinez came in for the save. De La Renta maced him and Martinez covered for the win.

WINNER – Ricky Martinez

The announcers were doing the fake cough to sell the mace or pepper spray or whatever it was supposed to be. The crowd was not into this at all and this whole match died a slot death. They tried and it was good action for the most part but the lack of crowd heat really took it down a notch.

Afer a commercial break, a promo aired for the returning Jimmy Havoc, aka “England’s most dangerous man”. Matt Stryker announced the next live special in 4 weeks from Chicago called Intimidation Games.

MJF crashed the victory party of the New Hart Foundation and the former champion challenged Teddy Hart for the middleweight title he never lost. Hart cut a promo on him, mentioning “The Elite” and saying that he should go there because the Harts run this company.

A short promo for “Southern Psycho” Mance Warner aired in place of an MLW control center featuring Tony Schiavone had cut to. Not sure if that was a technical SNAFU or if they just did it to hide the fact that Schiavone isn’t really there. It came off very awkward and Stryker basically just said that anything can happen on live TV.

They announced Superfight II will take place in Los Angeles on February 1st, 2020. Main event is next with less than 10 minutes of television time.

MLW World heavyweight title match – Champion “The Professional” Low Ki (w/Selina De La Renta) vs “Filthy” Tom Lawlor

Lawlor out in his UFC Reebok gear and pulling out his own air during his entrance. Crowd chanting FILTHY. Rich Bonini says that beIN will broadcast this match in it’s entirely (he actually says if it goes into “extra innings”, beIN will continue to air it). Filthy’s left knee and both hands are heavily taped.

NEW CHAMP chants from the crowd and they don’t lock up, brawling to start, which Lawlor gets the best of. Ref gives Low Ki a standing 8 count. (?), which he protests. Lawlor going for an armbar after the match restarts but Low Ki kicks him off. Lawlor hits a suplex and then some ground and pound but Low Ki connects with some kicks and they’re both down. Lawlor with a rear naked choke but Ki runs him into the turnbuckle to break it.

Low Ki grabs a door from under the ring and puts it up against the turnbuckle. Low Ki runs at Lawlor but Lawlor moves and Low Ki punches right through the door, shattering it. Low Ki slaps on a dragon sleeper but Lawlor gets to the ropes and breaks. Lawlor attempts a superplex but Low Ki punches out of it and then hits the Tree of Woe double foot stomp and gets a two.

Low Ki with a dragon sleeper but Lawlor rolls through and slaps on the rear naked choke. Low Ki passes out without tapping.

WINNER AND NEW MLW WORLD CHAMPION – “Filthy” Tom Lawlor

They went right off the air after the finish as we were right up to the top of the hour. Match was good but very rushed as clearly something must have gone long earlier in the night and they had to get the show in under 60 minutes. Crowd reacted well to Lawlor winning the belt and Selina at ringside was throwing a temper tantrum as the show ended.

MLW Fusion results: LA Park vs. Sami Callihan falls count anywhere

The Big Takeaway —

Kotto Brazil made his return, but Ricky Reyes is not done with him. Barrington Hughes and Ace Romero were supposed to face off against each other, but ended up being a new tag team. Teddy Hart booped his cat’s nose. The build to the Low Ki and Tom Lawlor MLW title match continued as Low Ki cut a great promo on Lawlor. LA Park and Sami Callihan had a wild brawl that was a ton of fun.

The Recap—

The show opened with a memoriam for Rex Bacchus. A recap aired about all the events leading to LA Park vs. Sami Callihan, as Callihan failed to take out Tom Lawlor.

Kotto Brazil defeated Vandal Ortagun

Brazil made his return from injury, but was sent to the floor quickly by Ortagun. Brazil was wearing a patch over his eye, but has not slowed down as he managed to drag Ortagun to the outside and hit two suicide dives and then a tope con hilo. Brazil went for a Destino, but Ortagun managed to avoid it. Ortagun pulled the eyepatch way out and snapped it back into Kotto’s eye which had to suck.

Vandal nailed a big chop and then sent Brazil to the corner. Vandal got the heat for the next few minutes with some classic heel offense, including rope chokes. After a chop, Brazil fired back with a few, but Vandal went for the eyes and cut him off. Brazil hit an Eat Da Feet and then a few German suplexes, and ended with one with a bridge after a few counters. Brazil used a springboard to hit a headbutt, and then nailed a series of strikes.

Vandal went for a powerbomb, but Brazil countered into a hurricanrana and then hit a Code Red, but Vandal kicked out. Brazil hit a cutter and then a Destino and got the pinfall. This probably went a little too long, but it was a good match. Ricky Martinez attacked Brazil after the match and took his eyepatch.

— A recap aired of Tommy Dreamer vs. Brian Pillman Jr. Dreamer was on the phone, cutting a promo about how Pillman was crazy to let Dreamer choose the match when it was going to be in the 2300 Arena.

Barrington Hughes and Ace Romero went to a no contest

Romero started with some forearms and big strikes. Hughes hit a Vader-like attack, and then Romero did a running dropkick. As both men were getting ready to keep going, Col. Rob Parker came out and cut a promo on both guys about their size. The Dirty Blondes ran out and attacked, and the referee decided it was time for a tag team match.

Barrington Hughes and Ace Romero defeated The Dirty Blondes

Romero and Hughes immediately responded to the Blondes by squashing them, literally and figuratively, when they hit stereo powerslams. It seems there is a new tag team in MLW.

— A video aired hyping Mance Warner coming to MLW.

— H2tv interrupted Tony Schiavone. Pillman Jr. and Teddy Hart cut a promo on Pentagon and Fenix where they called them cowardly for hiding behind their masks. Hart forced Pillman to drink a protein drink and run down the hallway. The segment ended with Hart booping his cat on the nose.

— Matt Striker ran down the rest of the MLW Superfight card, a significant downgrade from Schiavone.

— Sami Callihan cut a promo about how LA Park was going to leave in a body bag.

— Low Ki cut a promo against ‘Filthy’ Tom Lawlor, applauding him in a very sarcastic manner for overcoming all of Low Ki’s associates. This was a really good promo.

LA Park (w/ Salina de la Renta) defeated Sami Callihan in a falls count anywhere match

LA Park lives up to his name of being the chairman as he brought a chair into the ring. Both men started exchanging chops and Park pointed at Callihan’s protective vest and asked him to remove it. Callihan did and begged Park to chop him. Park chopped him so hard it brought tears to Callihan’s eyes. Park then hit a clothesline and they went to ringside. Park nailed Callihan with a trash can lid after setting him on a chair. Park then hit a suicide dive, knocking Sami off the chair.

Park removed his belt and started beating Callihan with it. Park went for another suicide dive, but Callihan destroyed him with a garbage can and then hit him a second time once on the outside. Callihan hit Park with a pylon, and then with Park’s own belt. Callihan chopped Park, grabbed a beer, and smashed it into Park’s head. Callihan ran at Park, but Park dumped him into the front row and then nailed Callihan with a garbage can. Park took apart a guardrail and set the garbage can on it. Park suplexed him on the garbage can and the guardrail.

Park grabbed several chairs from the front row and threw them into the ring. Park nailed Callihan with a chair and a cookie sheet, but Callihan kicked out of a pin attempt. Park and Callihan brawled out into the lobby, and outside of the building onto the street. After brawling on the outside, they made their way back in a different door and the entire ringside area was torn apart.

Callihan was rolled back into the ring by Park, but Callihan accidentally took out the ref’s leg while rolling in. Park tried to pin Callihan, but Callihan kicked out. After Park hit a powerslam, the ref couldn’t complete the count. Park hit the ref with a cookie sheet. Callihan hit a low blow, and the ref went to make the pin, but Park kicked out. Callihan went to powerbomb Park on a series of chairs, but Park countered and ran to the corner. Callihan charged, but Park dodged and then speared Callihan into all the setup chairs and he pinned Callihan.

That was fantastic. A five star classic? Definitely not, but it was a great, fun brawl.

Low Ki vs. Tom Lawlor title match to headline MLW Fusion Live

A second title match has been added to MLW’s next live special.

MLW has announced that Low Ki vs. Tom Lawlor for the MLW World Heavyweight Championship will headline next month’s MLW Fusion Live, which is airing on beIN Sports at 8 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday, February 2. The one-hour special is taking place at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

MLW is hyping up Low Ki vs. Lawlor as a match that’s seven months in the making. Low Ki has been MLW World Heavyweight Champion since defeating Shane Strickland last July. Lawlor also won a 40-man Battle Riot match that same month, with Lawlor getting his title shot as a stipulation of that match.

Pentagon Jr. & Fenix defending their MLW Tag Team titles against two members of the Hart Foundation (Teddy Hart, Davey Boy Smith Jr. & Brian Pillman Jr.) is also set for February’s MLW Fusion live. MLW is holding television tapings at the 2300 Arena on the same night as the live special.

MLW Fusion results: Tommy Dreamer vs. Brian Pillman Jr.

Quick recap:

  • Dragon Lee defeated Rich Swann
  • Brian Pillman Jr. defeated Tommy Dreamer in a Singapore cane match
  • Low Ki defeated Fred Yehi to retain the MLW world title

This week’s episode opened backstage where we saw ‘Filthy’ Tom Lawlor outside of Promociones Dorado’s dressing room listening in to an ongoing argument. Inside, we heard Sami Callihan shouting that he wants his money owed to him. Salina de la Renta responded by screaming that he gets what he has earned, and that he has not done anything around here to deserve it.

Her words were much more non-PG and were bleeped out, but let’s just say Callihan, in Salina’s eyes, has not had a smash hit in MLW yet. Tony Schiavone tells us it sounds like Salina is demanding that Callihan take out Lawlor tonight.

Schiavone and Rich Bochinni welcomed us to the show from Miami and hyped up tonight’s Singapore cane match between Tommy Dreamer and Brian Pillman Jr. tonight, along with Dragon Lee vs Rich Swann.

We cut backstage to Low Ki who said has gone through all the word class athletes MLW has thrown at him. He said he is going to ride off into the sunset and retire as the best MLW world heavyweight champion ever.

Dragon Lee defeated Rich Swann (10:43)

Schiavone told us that Lee is considered by some as one of the best high flying luchadores in the sport, but he was unable to show off a lot of his talents as Swann dominated most of this match from the start. He passed by the fans as they tried to high-five him and was extra cocky making his way into the ring. He blew kisses to the fans before telling them all to kiss his ass.

Lee went for a handshake but Swann refused and ran his hand through his hair. We were told this was Lee’s first match in four months as he has been filming a reality TV show in the Dominican. They exchanged arm ringers and arm drags before Swann attempted a headscissor takeover but Lee evaded it with a cartwheel. Lee hit his own headscissors as both then hit double dropkicks, double kip ups and a stand-off much to the delight of the Miami crowd.

Swann’s apparent heel turn was really showing through as he took the advantage again after a cheap shot and landed a barrel load of right hands to the head while Lee was grounded. Lee got a bit of revenge when, on the outside, Swann went for a chop but Lee moved and Swann smacked his hand off the lighting grid.

Both fighters fought up to their knees where they exchanged right hands, they gradually made their way to their feet to exchange some knees to the head. They stumbled to the corner to exchange some step-up kicks to the head. Lee was then on the top rope but Swann kept up his control of the match by bringing Lee to the mat with a jumping hurricanrana. Swann missed his Phoenix splash and was caught with Lee’s sit out powerbomb, the Dragon Driver, out of nowhere for the win.

Swann acknowledged and raised Lee’s hand after the match in what could keep his face character alive for future matchups.

— Backstage, we see Callihan brandishing a hammer and running into Ace Romero. He asked if he has seen Lawlor and if he does, let him know that he is looking for him. He pushed past an old man, who thought he was looking for Tom and Jerry, and stole his sunglasses. Classic bad guy routine.

— We cut to a social media video from Pillman Jr. who told Dreamer that he is tired of him and he said MLW is his field and his playground. He said he was tired of Dreamer politicking him and his father’s legacy, and he is not afraid of him and not afraid of using his own cane in their match later on. He calls Dreamer a phony and said he is bringing his own cane to the fight.

 – Backstage, Lawlor tells a guy to tell Callihan that he is warming up in a side room by the kitchen.

Brian Pillman Jr. defeated Tommy Dreamer in a Singapore cane match (9:29)

Pillman came out by himself without the rest of the Hart Foundation and was brandishing a Singapore cane. Dreamer also had his own cane and received a good reaction.

Dreamer hit a few hip tosses and removed Pillman’s jacket and hoodie, only to reveal a nice, smart, patterned dress shirt that Pillman also chose as part of his ring attire tonight to help pad himself from the cane shots. He spat a beer in Pillman’s face as they brawled around the ring. They made their way into the crowd and Dreamer ripped open the dress shirt to reveal another t-shirt.

Pillman fought back and dropped Dreamer, of course, groin first on the guard rail. Back in the ring, Pillman hit Dreamer in the hand with the cane and continued his attack on the hand and fingers. Pillman hit a nice standing dropkick and took control of the cane again. He came off the middle rope with a big cane shot to the head for a two count before going back to Dreamer’s hand and fingers. Dreamer got in a cane shot of his own when Pillman came off the middle rope again but with no luck this time.

Dreamer fought back and got in his flip, flop and fly Dusty Rhodes elbow to the head before getting a two count after a powerslam. He took a chair from underneath the ring and pulled Pillman’s clothes up, revealing his back. He drilled Pillman with a cane shot while he was draped over the back of the chair.

Later, he set up the chair, two Singapore canes and Pillman’s own cane in a pile in the middle of the ring but while constructing this death mount, Dreamer gave Pillman enough time to recover. Dreamer picked him up and was looking for a Dreamer Driver onto the weapons but Pillman slipped out and used a cane for a low blow. He then drilled Dreamer with a DDT style swinging neckbreaker to pick up the three count and the win.

— We cut backstage to Callihan, still looking for Lawlor. He met the guy Lawlor spoke to earlier and he told Callihan he was in the room by the kitchen warming up.

— A promo video then aired for the debuting Mance Warner.

MLW World Heavyweight Champion Low Ki (w/ Salina de la Renta) defeated Fred Yehi (4:30)

It was a slow start as both fighters exchanged holds before Low Ki made his way to the corner where he wrapped up Yehi in an armbar over the top rope. Some good chain wrestling followed before Yehi hit a big slam, and Ki hit a shoulder block. Yehi then locked in a kneebar but Ki ended up reversing but Yehi managed to escape with little damage being done.

The tune of the match changed when Ki cheapshotted Yehi with five big shots to the gut and a stiff looking kick to the ribs. Yehi fought back with a nice looking combination of strikes, stomps, a trip and a dropkick to a seated champion. Yehi got a close two count but Ki escaped and ended up on the top rope. He cracked Yehi over the head with club to the side of the face that temporarily floored the challenger. This is all that the champion needed as he dove off and landed on Yehi’s back with a double foot stomp to pick up the three count and the win in a short but well executed match.

 — Backstage, we caught up with Callihan, his hammer, and the poor old man’s glasses, still on his quest to find Lawlor. This building must be huge. He kicked open the kitchen door and slowly made his way to the other side where the door would lead him to Lawlor. He entered the side room and closed the door behind him. We heard a fight ensuing inside and after the grunts, smacks, and clattering died down, the door opened and out walked Lawlor, victorious and brandishing Callihan’s hammer. After a menacing look to the camera he walked off with Callihan seemingly being taken care of by his own weapon.

MLW Fusion results: Low Ki vs. Konnan no DQ World title match

Quick recap:

  • Ace Romero defeated Simon Gotch in a $20,000 Simon Gotch Prize Fight
  • Ariel Dominguez (from Team Filthy) defeated Andrew Everett
  • No DQ World Heavyweight Title Fight: Konnan vs. Low Ki (presented by Salina de la Renta) was a no contest due to referee stoppage.

This week’s episode opened with a video package hyping up tonight’s main event between Low Ki and Konnan. It showed the history between Konnan and Promociones Dorado, and the major events involving Pentagon Jr, Daga, Salina de la Renta and Ricky Martinez that have been building since September and that has led us to tonight’s match.

Tony Schiavone and Rich Bocchini welcomed us to the Scottish Rite Temple in Miami, Florida, for the last episode of 2018. We had a recap from last week’s Tom Lawlor vs. Simon Gotch no holds barred fight, Schiavone mentioned that Gotch has lost his mind since last week and he is desperate to show the world that he is the ultimate fighter in MLW.

Ace Romero defeated Simon Gotch in a $20,000 Simon Gotch Prize Fight (2:02)

Gotch took the mic before the match and said there has been a disease growing in MLW that has reached pandemic levels and he is going to act as the even hand of justice. Romero answered his open challenge.

Gotch tried to take Romero off his feet with a takedown early, but had no luck. He went up top and tried a choke but still no luck. Frustrated, Gotch took to the outside for a breather but did not expect to turn and see the 400 lb. Romero running across the ring in what looked like a suicide dive attempt. In a flash, Gotch dove under the apron and Romero stopped in his tracks before he could squash the self proclaimed prizefighter.

As we were told that one of the five allotted minutes had expired, Romero lifted Gotch back into the ring by his moustache and planted him with a facial hair assisted tree slam. Gotch fought back with hard strikes and slaps but quickly ate a bodyslam for his trouble. Romero then hit the ropes and was successful in squashing Gotch this time with a huge big elbow drop and picked up the three count, the win, and the $20,000.

— Schiavone updated us on Kotto Brazil’s injury, saying he has undergone two surgeries on his injured eye. We then saw footage of Ricky Martinez, apparently after the nightclub incident, in a limo filled with lap dancers and celebrating with champagne. We were told that Martinez has been suspended by MLW before cameras caught up with him outside the building. He said he doesn’t care how long he is suspended for as he is with Promociones Dorado, he flashed some cash before quickly leaving.

Ariel Dominguez defeated Andrew Everett (3:05)

This was a fun short match playing off Dominguez’s smaller size. Everett mocked him throughout the match but in the end that was his downfall as he spent too much time taunting and took his eye off the ball.

Dominguez missed a big top rope springboard splash early on. Everett followed up with a lionsault and finished his Chris Jericho tribute with a cocky foot on the chest pin attempt for a two count.

Everett kept on the advantage until he went for a chokeslam, but Dominguez slipped out and hit a big rolling German suplex for a two count of his own. He tried to continue his momentum as he charged into the corner, but Everett evaded and hit a nice Pele kick that knocked the smaller fighter to the ground.

Everett then went to the top rope but took too much time with his shooting star press as Dominguez was able to get his knees up then quickly grab Everett in a small package to pick up the flash three count for the win.

— We got a recap from two weeks ago where Teddy Hart won the MLW Middleweight championship in the ladder match.

— We then cut to Konnan outside the building talking about tonight’s main event. He says he can see through Low Ki and Salina, that he is on point and will take Low Ki to the deepest waters he has ever been in, and that the revolution tonight will be televised.

— A Tommy Dreamer & Barrington Hughes vs. Brian Pillman Jr. and Davey Boy Smith Jr. recap is shown from last week with Pillman picking up the win via the use of his own cane against Dreamer.

— We then cut to Dreamer where he said he underestimated Pillman. In their first match, he took advantage of Pillman while in their second match, Pillman stole the pin on him. Now, let’s set the stage for our third match, he said. He challenged Pilman to a Singapore cane match in two weeks. He says for every Charlotte Flair and Randy Orton walking around, there is an Angelo Mosca Jr. and Bruno Sammartino Jr. He asks Pillman what one will he be? He says Pillman has two weeks to step up and if he wants to be with him, he needs to beat him.

— We see a recap of the Tom Lawlor vs. Promociones Dorado feud with Lawlor finally getting his hands on Low Ki two weeks ago. We see extended footage of their brawl that went on after the cameras stopped rolling.

— H2tv time with Teddy Hart and Brian Pillman Jr. They are trash talking Pentagon Jr and Rey Fenix. Hart, along with Davey Boy Smith Jr., are challenging Pentagon Jr. and Fenix to a MLW Tag Team Championship match.

— We were then outside the building with Lawlor. He said that it has been seven long hard months since he had won the Battle Riot, and that Low Ki has been running from him. Lawlor is willing to fight for what he believes in, that he is willing to stand up to any challenge, that he is a fighting champion, and that is what Low Ki will never see when he looks in the mirror. He will show Low Ki how a real professional fighter handles business.

The MLW World Heavyweight Champion Low Ki (w/ Ricky Martinez & Salina de la Renta) vs. Konnan no DQ match ended in a no contest due to referee stoppage (5:44)

This bloody brawl had a big fight feel as we saw the tale of the tape before an extended video package for Konnan’s entrance. Both fighters went nose to nose as the official introductions were announced.

It was a chaotic start to the match as Konnan immediately sidestepped Low Ki, who stopped himself before hitting the referee in the corner. He tossed the official to the side and turned into a loaded sock shot from Konnan. The announcers questioned what was inside the sock as Konnan went for a cover, but Ricky Martinez pulled the champion to safety on the outside.

Low Ki was busted open and took a while to get back into the ring. When he did, he was staggering around but was still able to hit a kick to the gut and some shots to the kidneys before being thrown down looking completely out of it. Konnan locked in the tequilla sunrise but Martinez interfered again and started to put the boots to Konnan.

Martinez picked up Konnan and set him up for Low Ki to attack. Low Ki ran at Konnan with a drop kick, but the veteran sidestepped and Low Ki took out Martinez. Konnan then hit a low blow to floor the champion again, but this time, Salina de la Renta entered the ring. She got in Konnan’s face and tried to hit him with her cane, but that was caught by Konnan who contemplated hitting her with ii. This gave Low Ki just enough time to recover and take out Konnan with a big shot to the head.

Low Ki stomped a beer bottle into Konnan’s head that busted him open too. Martinez and de la Renta entered the ring again, along with Hijo de la Park, and they began beating down a defenseless Konnan. The referee tried to gain some sort of control but eventually called for the bell as Martinez and Hijo held Konnan and Low Ki repeatedly struck him in the back, liver, and kidneys.

Salina took out what looked like a spike and screamed at Low Ki to use it. Officials tried to get into the ring but Martinez and Hijo quickly took them out. Salina again screamed at the champion to use the spike so Low Ki took it and drilled it into Konnan’s back.

Enough was enough for Tom Lawlor as he ran out and made the save. He took out Martinez and Hijo with right hands and a spinning heel kick while Salina and Low Ki slipped out of the ring. Lawlor quickly jumped to Konnan’s aid as the announcers told us the backstage cameras had caught something. We got to the back to see Pentagon Jr. laying on the ground, clearly having been attacked by someone. The announcers speculate this is the work of Promociones Dorado in an attempt to keep the tag team champion from helping Konnan. We go off the air with chaos all round the building, thanks to Salina de la Renta and Promociones Dorado.

Next week:

  • Teddy Hart vs Pentagon Jr.
  • LA Park vs Gringo Loco

Minoru Suzuki replacing Low Ki at Matt Riddle’s Bloodsport

With Low Ki out of the main event, a big replacement has been lined up for Matt Riddle’s Bloodsport.

Game Changer Wrestling announced tonight that Minoru Suzuki is replacing Low Ki and will be facing Riddle at tomorrow’s (Thursday) show. No reason was given for Low Ki no longer being on the card.

This will be the second time that Suzuki and Riddle have faced each other, with Suzuki having defeated him at Revolution Pro Wrestling’s Global Wars UK show in Walthamstow last November. Suzuki will be in action at RevPro’s event in New Orleans on Friday as he takes on Jeff Cobb.

The theme for Matt Riddle’s Bloodsport, which is being presented by Game Changer Wrestling, is that wrestlers can only win by knockout or submission. It’s taking place at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, Louisiana at 4 p.m. Eastern time and will air live through WWN Live and Fite TV.

My Favorite Wrestler (This Week): Io Shirai, Jay White, more

This week in wrestling, the worlds went to war in the latest ROH PPV, the age-old discussion on what wrestlers should and shouldn’t do and what wrestling should and shouldn’t be continued on social media, and New Japan’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament kicked off in spectacular fashion. Here are our favorite wrestlers this week. Who’s yours?

This week’s panel —

Io Shirai

By Zach Dominello

Last week, news of Kairi Hojo heading to WWE led to her being my favorite wrestler (that week). This week, word is Io Shirai has finally accepted a WWE offer and she too is now on her way. Logically, that makes Io Shirai my favorite wrestler this week.

Most of what I said about Hojo last week also applies here to Shirai. She’s one of the best wrestlers in the world, and while signing with WWE is probably a good move career-wise, it hurts for us fans of Japanese wrestling. It’s especially going to hurt for Stardom, who’s quickly running out of top stars. I guess Mayu will just get all the belts now.

It’ll be interesting to see what the WWE versions of Hojo and Shirai will be like. It’s been reported that Hojo has been asked to come up with a new finisher as Bayley already does a top rope elbow drop. If you’ve ever seen Hojo’s elbow, you’ll know why that is the most ridiculous request of any wrestler in pro wrestling history. Fortunately, Hojo’s so good that I’m sure she’ll do just fine without it, but seriously, thanks for taking away one of the most beautiful sights in the world, WWE. Here’s a priceless Picasso you might like to hang up in the basement of the House of Horrors for zero to enjoy.

What are they going to ask of Shirai? “Hey Io, just a few things: We’d like you to not do your German anymore because Tozawa does that. And you can’t do a moonsault because that’s Charlotte’s move. Pretty sure she invented it herself, actually. Balor does the shotgun dropkick so I’m afraid that has to go. And no springboard moves or topes. Styles and Ambrose have those covered. Would you mind also being less Japanese? Nakamura already does that. And Asuka’s already quite female so maybe stop doing that too. Anyway, can’t wait to see you at Full Sail!”

What? I’m not bitter. Anyway, Io’s awesome.

Jay White

By Arya Witner

My favorite wrestler this week is a man whose career never crossed my mind until a few days ago. After over a year of competing in mostly skippable matches in New Japan and ROH, Jay White jumped out of my television screen and into my heart with his match against Will Ospreay.

Following a disappointing three-way tag team match, I did not have my hopes up when I saw the graphic. Sure, Ospreay is one of the most exciting and acrobatic wrestlers in the world, but this isn’t Ricochet on the other side of the ring. 15 minutes later I jumped to my feet in applause after a jaw-dropping battle that is one of my two favorite U.S. matches of the year.

White may not have won the match, but he gained at least one new fan in the meantime.

Low Ki

By Jeremy Peeples

Low Ki has struggled to find his footing since leaving WWE years ago. He bounced around the indies, did a little bit in Japan, but wound up being his own worst enemy at times. Now, he’s back in TNA with his biggest main event-level push yet. He was pushed in a main event stable with the BDC before, but he didn’t feel like a top guy there. Now, he’s main eventing shows and cutting fairly intense promos as well.

His work in the latest incarnation of Ultimate X was a fine example of how to make use of his skills without having to take needless damage. He, Trevor Lee, and Andrew Everett had a safe Ultimate X match without the usual crazy high spots that have come to define it for the past 13 years.

Konosuke Takeshita

By Alan4L

I finally had the time to get a DDT Universe subscription and have been digging into everything from this year. The standout revelation is one that I probably knew but had somewhat forgotten — Konosuke Takeshita is an incredibly great professional wrestler.

Through his powerlifting training, Takeshita has become a true heavyweight but still has the athleticism and speed (he was a champion high school sprinter) that led to him being hailed as the new Kota Ibushi not long after his DDT debut. Now Takeshita is a total all-rounder. What really struck me was what a hard-hitter he’s become with his forearm smashes and chops looking particularly devastating.

Then there is that powerlifting strength, best displayed in his amazing match against KUDO at Korakuen on the Sweet Dreams show. KUDO went for a flying double knees and the youngster caught him, hurked him up, and powerbombed him into the corner.

Trust me, it’s more impressive on video than in text so get yourself a DDT Universe sub and watch one of the most exciting young wrestlers in the business today.

Impact Wrestling results: Ultimate X returns

Storm made a comeback and they brawled on the floor. Storm grabbed the leather strap, but Magnus stopped him. Bruce Prichard ran out and sent Magnus to the back.

During the commercial, EC3 jumped Storm from behind as Magnus was ejected from ringside. EC3 hit the TK3 and brought in the strap. EC3 knocked down referee Brian Stiffler and viciously whipped him with the belt for the DQ.

James Storm attacked EC3 and set up for the Last Call when Magnus ran back out and attacked Storm. Magnus and EC3 argued until Prichard ran back out. He announced a three-way number one contender’s match for next week. EC3 knocked him down to end the segment.

Sienna mocked ODB but missed a splash in the corner and ODB took over. Sienna yanked ODB off the turnbuckle and hit the Silencer to retain the title.

– Jeremy Borash came out to the ring, which infuriated Mathews. J.B. hired an attorney and announced that he has been reinstated effective immediately. J.B. introduced his attorney — the returning Joseph Park.

Mathews pointed out that Park is Abyss and called him an idiot. Park challenged Mathews to find a partner to face him and J.B. at Slammiversary. Mathews left and J.B. was now on commentary.

X Division Champion Low Ki defeated Trevor Lee (w/ Gregory Shane Helms) and Andrew Everett in Ultimate X to retain his title

This was one of Impact’s best main events in a long time. Low Ki and Everett fought on the apron and Lee shoved them both off into the guardrail. Everett nailed a springboard shooting star press to the floor on Lee.

Lee brought in a chair, but Low Ki punched it back into Lee’s face and injured his hand in the process. Due to the injured hand, Low Ki struggled to grab the cable several times. Lee caught Low Ki and executed a German suplex, but Low Ki landed on his feet and hit a double foot stomp on Lee.

Low Ki tried to climb up again, but his hand was still hurting. Everett knocked off Low Ki, then Helms hit a neckbreaker off the top on Everett. Lee stood on Helms’ shoulders and they tried walking across. Low Ki took them both out with a kick.

Low Ki still couldn’t grab the cable because of his injured hand from punching the chair. So he climbed above the cable and onto the X structure surrounding it and crawled to the center. At the same time, Lee and Everett climbed the cable to the center. Low Ki knocked them both off and grabbed the belt to retain.

Next Week: James Storm, Ethan Carter III, and Magnus face off in a three-way number one contender’s match. Braxton Sutter & Mahabali Shera vs. KM & Kongo Kong will take place as well. Also, Eddie Edwards & Alisha face Davey Richards & Angelina Love in a mixed tag.

– Karen Jarrett came out and introduced herself as the co-owner of Global Force Wrestling. She announced that GFW and Impact have merged. Sonjay Dutt made his return to Impact and asked to be added to the X Division title match.

Bruce Prichard came down to the ring and agreed to add Dutt to the match. He went a step further and decided to add three more guys to make it a six-way. The X Division match will be the main event.

– A video package on Crimson aired next. He’s a member of Veterans of War and they’ll make their debut next week.

Knockouts Champion Rosemary defeated ODB to retain her title

– Next, Swoggle was shown running around in the crowd and greeting the fans.

Kongo Kong (w/ Sienna, KM & Laurel Van Ness) defeated Chris Silvio

Laurel Van Ness is still a mess. Kong hit a cannonball in the corner and followed up with a huge splash off the top rope to win the match.

– Alberto El Patron said he’s the number one contender and challenged the winner of the Impact Championship match. He mentioned Slammiversary as a possible day for his title shot.

– McKenzie Mitchell interviewed GFW World Champion Magnus. He felt that El Patron should go to the back of the line and said he’s next for a title shot.

Impact World Heavyweight Champion Bobby Lashley defeated James Storm to retain his title

James Storm left a six pack of beer at the announce booth. Josh Mathews accompanied Bobby Lashley to the ring. Mathews was back on commentary for the rest of the show.

Mathews tried to give Lashley a bottle to use, but Ethan Carter III came down and told Mathews to sit down. Lashley slammed Storm on the steel steps to take over. Lashley brought in a chair and went to hit Storm with it, but he moved and the chair bounced off the ropes, hitting Lashley in the face.

Referee Brian Hebner got knocked down and Storm hit the Last Call superkick. Storm got the phantom three count and rolled out to get a beer bottle. EC3 grabbed the bottle and smashed it over Storm’s head. Lashley hit the spear to retain the title.

– Next, clips aired from Border City Wrestling of Chris Adonis attacking Grand Champion Moose. McKenzie Mitchell then interviewed Moose. Adonis approached with his arm in a sling. He can’t face Moose next week but has a replacement. Davey Richards jumped Moose and beat him down.

Low Ki defeated Trevor Lee, Suicide, Sonjay Dutt, Dezmond Xavier, and Andrew Everett to win the X Division Championship

This was a really good match with lots of innovative and wild action. All six guys attempted a dropkick and leapt back up to their feet. Five of the guys then hit a five-way dropkick on Lee moments later. Dutt hit a moonsault to the floor that knocked everyone down. Dutt then hit a tilt-a-whirl head scissors on Xavier, with Xavier landing on his feet.

Lee cleared the ring and it came down to Lee and Everett. Dutt suffered a nasty eye injury at some point in the match, though he eventually returned. Lee isolated Everett and kept everyone from entering.

The pace quickened and everyone hit big moves and scored several near falls. Everett hit an insane looking springboard shooting star press to the floor on all five guys. Everett climbed to the top, but Low Ki knocked him to the floor, landing on Suicide and Helms. Low Ki hit the double foot stomp on Lee to win the match.

– After the match, Mathews and J.B. started to argue. The Pope tried to diffuse the situation until he got fed up with Mathews and walked away. J.B. had enough and knocked Mathews out to end the show.

Next Week: Impact Tag Team Champions LAX battle Decay in a street fight. Plus, Grand Champion Moose defends against Davey Richards.
