Jake Atlas opens up about NXT, mental health, Triple H relationship

Image: WWE

In a revealing interview released Wednesday, former WWE NXT talent Jake Atlas opened up to Denise Salcedo about his mental state during his time at NXT, what led to him to ask WWE for his release before he was cut, failing to get a meeting with Paul “Triple H” Levesque for six months, and getting conflicting messages on how to present himself as the only openly gay wrestler on the roster.

Getting released

Atlas said he was at dinner when he got the call from John Laurinaitis who he had never talked to before. It was a twenty second conversation where the executive told him they were giving him his 30-day non-compete release.

He said the news didn’t come as a surprise as two months prior, he was offered a contract extension by Canyon Ceman and turned it down. He wanted to revisit it in six months and offered a counterproposal which he didn’t go into detail about. Even though he wanted to stay, he later asked Ceman for his release because he didn’t feel like his voice was being heard and “my mental health comes first and I (was) suffering.”

He asked to talk to Levesque as his conversations with Ceman were at a standstill and got the runaround for six months despite being told it would happen. That delay started to make him worried as he didn’t know how he was seen or valued on the brand.

Mixed messages

Even after being signed, it took Atlas five months to have his first conversation with Levesque which happened before the 2020 Cruiserweight Classic. He said they had a conversation about his sexuality that was positive, but showed “a limited kind of perspective and viewpoint on his end on what he feels (the character) should be. It wasn’t homophobic. It was just a limited version of what I was expected to be and do at NXT as the openly gay wrestler that got signed to the brand.”

He said the conversation startled him for many reasons because it was Levesque delivering the message and Atlas wanted to get in line. He said it was hard because in 2019, he was both finding his footing as a character and being more comfortable with his sexuality. He then had to rewind back and try to figure out something that fit the description they were looking for.

He admitted he could have done more for himself in speaking up and “joining the conversation and leading (WWE NXT) to create something that could have been more for the brand.” When he realized it, it was too late. He said he was too closed off early on and wanted to focus on doing everything right.

“I am not pointing fingers and I am not saying anything negative…everything is a two way street. When they came this way, I should have fought back and said, ‘Well, I think this.’ I do think they would have been completely receptive about it because, I will say, WWE is more than ready for LGBTQ+ representation on their shows, and it’s just gonna take the right person to be able to do it,” he said.

“They wanted me to just be a wrestler (with his sexuality) not mentioned or highlighted. I took that and spun it as being a different person. Being the way that I am with working through my inner demons and trying to be perfect, I took that to an extreme of being a different person,” he said, adding they asked him to lose his sparkly jacket and gave him conflicting messages about smiling being perceived as “gay” while later asking why he didn’t smile more.

He said they were overthinking his sexuality and wished there was someone else in NXT that was openly gay that could help understand what he was trying to figure out.

He later said People Magazine reached out to WWE and Atlas about highlighting him and he wasn’t sure how to approach it given the previous conversation with Levesque.

Getting help

“My mental health was probably the worst it’s ever been in the last two years that I was with WWE,” he said, earlier explaining being signed was a dream come true as he loved the glamour and extravaganza of WWE growing up.

He said that for a year starting in March 2020, he had a mental breakdown nearly every day.

“There are days when I would just cry. It was just an immense amount of pressure again that I would put on myself. I just didn’t feel like I was breaking out or being myself or getting people to get behind me. I didn’t feel like I was offering anything authentic. I remember watching my matches back, and I would see this Jake Atlas on the screen and I remember just being so disconnected from what I was watching on TV,” he explained.

“It was really rough and tough but I am glad I got the help that I got,” he said, complimenting Roderick Strong, who he trained with for six months, for helping him find avenues to improve his state of being.

He complimented WWE on providing and encouraging therapy and counseling which he took advantage of. While he understands he may draw criticism for seeming ungrateful for having a job, his mental health, sanity and being alive had to come first.

He revealed that in June, he contracted COVID-19 and missed almost six weeks which added to his bad mental state as he got very sick. He still feels like it affects him as he feels “different.” He complimented the company on their protocols and that they took great care of talents during the pandemic.

The future

After giving himself a night to be sad about the release, Atlas got back to work the next day. He will return to Ring of Honor this weekend and is starting to fill up his indie calendar.

Atlas said he has not spoken to Tony Khan about going to AEW, but is interested and appreciates the kind words Jungle Boy (his best friend) has said about him. He admitted he went incognito to Jacksonville while in NXT to watch Jungle Boy wrestle Kenny Omega for the AEW World title.

WWE 205 Live results: Jake Atlas vs. Tony Nese

Ashante “Thee” Adonis defeated Aryia Daivari

In the opening stretch, Adonis gained a few moments of control. Daivari would respond with some light offence before a dropkick from Adonis provided an opening to scale to the top rope. At the top, Daivari laid out Adonis, sending him crashing back to the mat.

After the fall, Daivari and Adonis traded strikes; Adonis emerged from the exchange victorious. A sidestep subverted Daivari’s attempt at saving his momentum. A crossbody and a near fall from Adonis followed.

Adonis tried again for a move, but this time overshot Daivari. Adonis sold his leg upon landing, prompting Daivari to rush in; Adonis stopped the rush with a sudden spinebuster. However, Adonis was unable to follow up as a quick dropkick to the injured leg left Daivari back in control.

Daivari then hit the hammerlock lariat but intentionally interrupted his own pin that would have granted him a win. Daivari then taunted his all but defeated opponent before slowly climbing to the top rope from where he lept, delivering the Persian splash. Daivari laid into the pin lackadaisically, giving Adonis enough breathing room to not only escape but transform it into a pin of his own, a pin that Daivari was unable to break.

This was fine. Nothing spectacular, but focused enough to deliver an entertaining watch.

Jake Atlas defeated Tony Nese

Nese and Atlas proved to be on equal footing in the opening moments. After trading holds and reversals, Atlas took Nese to the mat with an arm drag and controlled said arm for some time. Nese eventually found the ropes, and the break gave him space and the correct timing to connect with a running hotshot.

Nese dragged Atlas to the outside before repeatedly driving him into the apron of the ring. Back inside the ropes, Nese stomped on Atlas’s body before taking him to the mat with body scissors. As Atlas struggled to free himself from Nese’s control, Nese connected with a suplex. The momentary spacing created by the manoeuvre seemed to allow Atlas back into the match, but Nese stopped any momentum Atlas was gaining with a devastating roundhouse kick.

Nese hoisted Atlas into the torture rack. Atlas not only escaped the submission but quickly turned it into a brainbuster; A standing moonsault and a near fall punctuated the Atlas rally that followed.

Atlas tried for a sunset flip, but Nese blocked it. Nese connected with a swift kick to the temple and a springboard moonsault resulting in another Nese near fall. Nese then insulted Atlas, triggering a melee which turned into a counter exchange. Atlas connected with a lariat and a cartwheel DDT before pinning Nese.

This was quite good. Atlas is a part of a rare breed of true babyfaces, and Nese his perfect heel complement.

WWE 205 Live results: Tony Nese vs. Jake Atlas

Mansoor and Ashante “Thee” Adonis defeated Samir Singh and Chase Parker

Bolly-Rise made their in-ring return, this time with the pairing of Samir Singh and Chase Parker.

Singh and Mansoor started the match in typical fashion. After some light offense favoring Mansoor, Parker and Adonis subbed in. Adonis and Parker traded some light offense of their own before Adonis was lured into the Bolly-Rise corner, allowing Singh to steal control. Parker and Singh traded tags, picking apart Adonis in the process.

Adonis fought for and eventually succeeded in tagging in Mansoor. Mansoor connected with multiple atomic drops on both of his opponents, but Parker and Singh proved to be too much in tandem. Singh landed an elbow drop for a near fall.

Parker and Singh set up for a double team maneuver before being interrupted by Adonis; this allowed Mansoor to connect with a falcon arrow. After a brief four-man brawl, Adonis hit a superkick and Singh and pinned him.

Mansoor remains undefeated as Bolly-Rises continues to be winless. This was an inoffensive match. Nothing special about it, but it wasn’t bad.

Jake Atlas defeated Tony Nese

Immediately following the opening bell, the music of Ariya Daivari played and out walked Daivari. Nese took advantage of this distraction, clubbing Atlas. Nese maintained his newfound control with a variety of strikes.

Time after time, Atlas gained some separation, only to lose it. Atlas finally fought Nese to the floor and connected with a moonsault. Back in the ring, Atlas connected with a lariat, which resulted in a near fall.

Nese stopped Atlas from following up by grabbing his hair. Nese used his fist full of locks to deliver a running hotshot followed by a moonsault. Atlas kicked out of the pin attempt that followed.

Atlas fought free from a suplex to buy separation. Atlas landed big move after big move before trying for pins resulting in near falls; this prompted Daivari to toss his chain into the ring behind the referee’s back. Before Nese could act, August Grey ran out from the back and grabbed the chain. In the chaos, Atlas rolled Nese up for the win.

There isn’t a lot to say about this match. Even with the interference, it felt by the numbers. Again, not bad per se, just plain.

WWE 205 Live results: Jake Atlas vs. August Grey

Ariya Daivari & Tony Nese defeated Sunil Singh (with Samir Singh) & Matt Martel (with Chase Parker)

The bizarre pairing of Martel and Sunil is part of a new alliance dubbed “Bolly-Rise.”

Nese and Sunil took turns in the opening moments trading light advantage and occasional taunts; Daivari and Martel subbed in for more of the same. Sunil and Martel tried for a double team strike, but Martel blindsided Sunil, leaving the door open for Nese and Daivari.

Daivari and Nese traded tags, picking apart Sunil. Sunil struggled for and finally achieved a tag of his own to reverse the flow of momentum. Martel took out both Nese and Daivari with suplexes. Martel tagged Sunil back in, allowing the pair to deliver a successful double team maneuver.

A four-way brawl broke out, leaving the match in a state of chaos. Nese subdued Sunil outside while Daivari tried to deliver a chain-wrapped fist to Martel on the inside. The referee caught Daivari before he could connect with the loaded strike. As the official disposed of the chain, Nese hit a running knee on Martel, allowing the legal man Daivari to score the pin.

This wasn’t great, but it certainly beats Sunil and Martel wrestling each other. As for the future of Bolly-Rise, only time can tell.

August Grey defeated Jake Atlas

Atlas and Grey traded ground control following the initial bell. After a stalemate, the two went at it. Atlas won the strike exchange that followed, allowing him to connect with some significant offense for the first time. A neckbreaker left Atlas with a near fall.

Grey took match control for himself by connecting with a rana after a moment of separation. A dropkick opened Atlas up to a few thunderous chops from Grey.

Atlas caught Grey with a boot, which he followed with an elbow drop. A standing moonsault, German suplex, and lariat left Atlas with a near fall.

Grey snuck in a forearm that left Atlas in a daze, falling to the outside. That allowed Grey to connect with a tope. Back inside, Grey hit a spinning crossbody for a questionable three count.

Following the match, Daivari and Nese hit the ring, destroying both Grey and Atlas.

This match was not fantastic either. Nothing felt like it was building to a finish, and when the finish arrived, it was completely flat.

Isaiah ‘Swerve’ Scott & Jake Atlas set for WWE NXT Dusty Classic

A new team is set for the 2021 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

After Wednesday night’s New Year’s Evil episode of NXT, WWE uploaded a video with Jake Atlas agreeing to team with Isaiah “Swerve” Scott in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Scott asked Atlas to team with him in the tournament and Atlas agreed after making Scott promise that there will be no shortcuts.

During the video, Scott asked Atlas why he was still fuming after their match against each other two weeks ago. Scott said he doesn’t look to the past, he looks to the future. Scott said he defeated Atlas, but that doesn’t make Atlas any less of a great competitor.

Scott defeated Atlas on NXT two weeks ago after using a headbutt to help him get the win. Scott wanted Atlas to shake his hand after the match, but Atlas refused and left the ring. Scott had previously declined a handshake from Atlas after Atlas defeated him on NXT last month.

The Dusty Classic will kick off with Undisputed Era’s Adam Cole & Roderick Strong vs. Breezango and The Grizzled Young Veterans vs. Ever-Rise taking place on NXT next Wednesday. WWE has also announced that a women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic will be held soon.

Here are the teams that have been announced for the men’s Dusty Classic thus far:

  • Undisputed Era (Adam Cole & Roderick Strong)
  • Ever-Rise (Chase Parker & Matt Martel)
  • Breezango (Tyler Breeze & Fandango)
  • Curt Stallion & August Grey
  • Killian Dain & Drake Maverick
  • Imperium (Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner)
  • The Grizzled Young Veterans (Zack Gibson & James Drake)
  • Legado Del Fantasma (Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde)
  • Johnny Gargano & Austin Theory
  • Isaiah “Swerve” Scott & Jake Atlas

The team that wins the tournament will receive the Dusty Cup and a shot at Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch’s NXT Tag Team titles.

WWE 205 Live results: Mansoor vs. Jake Atlas

Mansoor defeated Jake Atlas

Atlas and Mansoor grappled as the match opened. Mansoor secured a single-leg crab. Atlas kicked Mansoor away, causing an awkward crash into the turnbuckles. A neckbreaker to a prone Mansoor and a forearm left Atlas with a pair of near falls.

Mansoor fought his way free from a headlock and landed a chop block. Mansoor landed two dragon screws and a spinebuster before locking in the scorpion deathlock. Atlas crawled into the bottom rope to break the hold. A surprise neckbreaker from Atlas gave him control.

Atlas tried for a suplex, but his leg gave way, allowing a quick pin attempt from Mansoor. Atlas powered through and landed a brainbuster before climbing to the top rope. Mansoor met Atlas with a dragon screw from the top rope to the mat. Mansoor maintained control of the leg and pinned Atlas.

This was a new side of Mansoor. This had some awkward moments but was well-executed.

Curt Stallion, Chase Parker, and Matt Martel defeated Sunil Singh, Samir Singh, and Ariya Daivari

Daivari gained the advantage for his team in the early going. He then taunted his tag partners, allowing Stallion to create some separation. Sunil stole a tag from Daivari. Stallion, with aid from Ever-Rise, maintained control.

Martel tried his hand at taking on all three of his competitors but fell short. After being overwhelmed by the numbers, Martel found himself on the receiving end of a double suplex. Martel then began his role as the punching bag.

A forced tag from Daivari stopped the Bollywood domination. Daivari immediately lost control of the match, allowing Stallion to tag in. Stallion unloaded on the now legal Samir; a gargantuan DDT left Stallion with a near fall. Stallion and Ever-Rise traded tags, taking out all three members of the opposition.

Daivari tagged back into the match, connecting with multiple strikes on Stallion. Daivari set Stallion up for a Samir dive, but Stallion missed, hitting Daivari instead. An enraged Daivari then announced he was leaving; the Singhs tried to console him. Stallion, not missing a beat, landed a beautiful dive, connecting with all three opponents. Stallion threw Samir back into the ring in time for Ever-Rise to connect with a double flapjack. On the rebound, Stallion connected with a leaping headbutt. Parker pinned Samir for the win.

This was fine enough, considering no one on Earth wants more Bollywood/Ever-Rise matches. Stallion has star potential.

WWE NXT live results: Three titles on the line

Three title matches will be taking place on tonight’s episode of NXT.

Johnny Gargano has vowed to break his title defense curse and successfully defend the NXT North American Championship tonight. Gargano promised to face a “worthy opponent” that will be determined by the Wheel of Challengers.

The NXT Tag Team titles will be on the line as Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch defend against Breezango. Breezango are getting their rematch for the titles after losing them to Lorcan & Burch three weeks ago. Lorcan & Burch aligned with Pat McAfee and got help from him to win the titles. McAfee, Lorcan, Burch & Pete Dunne are now calling themselves the Kings of NXT.

Santos Escobar defends his NXT Cruiserweight Championship against Jak

e Atlas. Atlas has been out for vengeance against Legado del Fantasma since Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde cost him a non-title match against Escobar two weeks ago.

After Candice LeRae got involved in her match last week, Toni Storm will face LeRae tonight. Storm defeated Shotzi Blackheart last Wednesday after Blackheart was distracted by LeRae appearing on the video screen. LeRae then destroyed Blackheart’s tank.

Plus, Raquel Gonzalez vs. Xia Li is set for tonight’s show. Our live coverage begins at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

**********

The show opened with a Veteran’s Day video.

Gargano opened the show in the ring. He revealed a wheel of challengers, telling people in the crowd to “respect the wheel”. He admitted that the first time he won and defended the title, he lost. But then he became NXT Champion. He eventually spun the wheel and somehow, it landed on a spot with “Leon Ruff” written hastily on white paper. And thus, the match began.

Leon Ruff defeated Johnny Gargano to win the NXT North American title

This was kind of a squash match (until the finish) but Ruff looked good in the spots he was given. This was far more about Damien Priest and Gargano.

Gargano dominated early, chopping Ruff in the corner. Ruff avoided a charge, switched positions around the turnbuckles and dropped Gargano with a dropkick. Gargano regained heat by throwing Ruff off the apron into the steel steps.

Gargano continued the assault outside the ring, throwing Ruff into the cage containing the crowd nearby. Damien Priest then appeared. Gargano initially mocked Priest, but when Priest emerged outside of the cage area, Gargano re-entered the ring.

Ruff tried to gain on this by rolling up Gargano, but Gargano kicked out. Gargano instead lawn-darted Ruff in the corner. He mocked Priest long enough for Ruff to counter with a crucifix bomb to pin Gargano and in the title. Yes, Leon Ruff has won the title.

Gargano was stunned by this development, to say the least. Ruff put the championship around his waist to celebrate, but as the referee held his hand up, the belt fell down, as you see, he’s very skinny.

Leon Ruff was being interviewed when Damien Priest came up to him and told him to take the black Challenger outside. Ruff exited as Gargano came in pissed and had to be restrained. Gargano acted like he never came up with the wheel stipulation in the first place.

In a WWE Network exclusive, Jake Atlas said he was tired of the numbers game. He got out of his car and attacked Legando del Fantasma with a pipe.

Santos Escobar defeated Jake Atlas to retain the NXT Cruiserweight title

This was perfectly fine, but nothing overwhelmingly great. A really good TV title match. There were a lot of things I liked about Atlas that seem lost in translation when going into the WWE Universe, and I will leave it at that.

Escobar controlled early.  Atlas made a comeback. One of Legando del Fantasma tried to use the crowbar while Atlas was on the apron, but Atlas fended off both men. He got a nearfall with a springboard blockbuster.

Back from commercial, Escobar was back on offense as Legado del Fantasma tripped up Atlas during the break, and were thrown out. Escobar propped up Atlas and hit a hurricanrana off the top rope, followed by a frog splash. Atlas made a comeback, hitting a hurricanrana of his own. Escaobar, however, got heat back after pushing Atlas off the top rope and into the announcer’s table ringside. Escobar then threw Atlas into the steel steps.

Atlas came back with a dive, then followed in the ring with a rollup for a near fall. Escobar dropped Atlas into the middle rope then cut him off with a superkick. Atlas came back and tried for the cartwheel DDT, but Santos blocked it, double hooked the arms and drove Atlas face first into his knee, pinning Atlas to retain the championship.

Dexter Lumis was shown completing a drawing of Cameron Grimes running away from a zombie referee while Raquel Gonzalez was walking to the ring.

A video package was shown of Candice LeRae destroying Shotzi Blackheart’s tank. Blackheart said she wasn’t looking for payback or revenge, she was looking to kick Candice’s ass.

Gonzalez came out to the ring, but when it was time for Xia Li to come out, Boa arrived instead. Boa told Gonzalez that Li would not be able to wrestle her. Gonzalez was pissed and kicked Boa straight up in the temple. She threw him around ringside before throwing him back into the ring and delivering a big boot and a one-armed powerbomb.

The lights then went out and an image of a Chinese dragon appeared. An old guy came to the ring and delivered Boa a note. He then put black marking on his hand before leaving. Boa sold his hand like the marking had some sort of power on him.

August Grey was about to explain why he confronted Timothy Thatcher last week when Thatcher jumped him and applied a front facelock. He then threw Grey into Lumis’ drawing. Lumis stared at him.

Candice LeRae defeated Toni Storm

This was one of the better matches of the night. There was some good wrestling, save for the cheap finish.

Things started off with some chain wrestling. Storm held on and applied an armbar. Storm continued to build up momentum until she went for a running hip toss, but instead went into the steel steps, giving an opening to LeRae.

Back from break, Storm cut off LeRae as both tried to recover. Storm hit a fisherman’s suplex, She went to the top rope, but LeRae met her there and went for a twisting neckbreaker, but didn’t catch her. Storm countered with a legdrop off the top rope, but LeRae dodged. LeRae tripped Storm into the turnbuckle then rolled her up, pinning her using the ropes for leverage.

Storm attacked LeRae after the match when the Scream person came out and helped her assault Storm. Blackheart came out to even the odds, but the Scream person laid her out with a kick. The Scream person then took off the Scream mask, revealing….Indi Hartwell. Hartwell and LeRae posed in the ring, cementing her alliance.

Breezango said it would not be fun Breezango coming out. Breeze promised they would regain the titles.

Timothy Thatcher defeated Dexter Lumis

This was fine. I was expecting a lot worse, but it was just your typical WWE TV match.

Lumis immediately took down Thatcher with a Thesz press as Thatcher recovered on the outside. Lumis gained control, putting Thatcher in a submission. He then laid out Thatcher with a spinebuster, but favored his arm after. He hit a dropkick and sent Thatcher to the floor. Thatcher regained control outside of the ring, but Lumis started to make a comeback until Thatcher shoved Lumis bad arm first into the post.

Back from commercial, Lumis cut off Thatcher and went to the top rope slowly. Thatcher cut him off with a European uppercut, but Lumis shoved him off and hit a swanton bomb. Thatcher shoved Lumis into Cameron Grimes, who was on the apron, then rolled him up for the win.

Grimes jumped Lumis after the match, but Lumis rose and stared down Grimes. He went for the attack, but Grimes cut him off and choked him with a burlap sack. He then connected with a knee into the corner. Lumis tried to fight back with a chair, but ended up sitting in it as Grimes laid him out with a double foot stomp. Grimes told Lumis that he wasn’t scared of him.

Gargano told William Regal he had calmed down and wanted to reverse the results. Regal told him no. Gargano was mad and said it was a goof, a joke. Regal said the decision stood and Leon Ruff is the new North American champion. Gargano didn’t like hearing that.

Ciampa promo. He mentioned that he has been in this business for 16 years and remembers being trained by the likes of Harley Race and Killer Kowalski. He said times have certainly changed, and everyone is talking. Bark enough and people begin to feel to their bite. He never thought he would be the last of a dying breed, but this culture, the 2020 locker room culture, is going to change. Ciampa is that change.

They aired a Prime Target segment covering the rivalry between Io Shirai and Rhea Ripley. That match will take place next week.

Pat McAfee. Pete Dunne, Danny Burch, and Oney Lorcan came out. McAfree put over Pete Dunne attacking Roderick Strong and Killian Dain. He talked about getting text messages from Tom Brady and others as he headed to Florida, thinking about what he was going to say. He buried the announce team and finished the promo by saying “let’s do this”. He’s really great in this role.

Cameron Grimes was elated about laying out Dexter Lumis. He said he was afraid of him, but then he covered him up Lumis’ creepy eyes. He said he was going somewhere where he’s gotta be, very happy about his actions.

NXT Champion Finn Balor, who has been out with an injured jaw, will appear on next week’s show.

Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan defeated Breezango to retain the NXT Tag Team titles

Good main event. The McAfee stable act immediately has some good main event level presence. After months of feeling forgotten, the tag team division in NXT seems to be shaping up.

Burch and Lorcan immediately started by taking Breezango outside of the ring to the floor. Fandango manages to get the upper hand on Burch as he tagged in Breeze. He hit a snap suplex and tagged in Lorcan, who was taken to the corner and worked over by Breezango. Burch was thrown into McAfee, who was at the announcer’s table, as they headed to the break.

Burch worked over Breeze while commercials ran. McAfee was at ringside as Breezango regained control. Fandango went for a sunset flip powerbomb on Lorcan, but when McAfee tried to catch the referee’s attention, Drake Maverick came in and laid out Lorcan, letting Fandango hit the top rope leg drop for a nearfall.

Dunne came in and sent McAfee into the ring so he could send Breeze off the apron. Burch it tagged in, which Fandango didn’t see. Burch headbutted Fandango, allowing him to be set up for an elevated DDT, giving the win to the champions.

Everyone came in to celebrate, but Drake Maverick came in for the attack. He was quickly cut off as Dunne lifted him up and slammed him on the announcer’s table. Breezango came in for the save, but were both cut off. They set it up so McAfee could connect with a running knee into the face of Breeze, who was propped up on the announcers table. The show ended with McAfee adjusting the camera to show what was left of Breezango and Maverick.

Cruiserweight title match announced for WWE NXT

Another title match has been added to the card for tonight’s NXT.

Ahead of the show going on the air, WWE announced that NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar will defend his title against Jake Atlas tonight:

Jake Atlas made it clear last week that he’s far from finished with Legado del Fantasma and will have an NXT Cruiserweight Title opportunity tonight against Santos Escobar.

After Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde aided Escobar to a non-title win against Atlas at NXT Halloween Havoc, the NXT Cruiserweight Champion was ready to move on from his latest challenger. Atlas had other plans, as the up-and-coming Superstar attacked Legado del Fantasma in the Capitol Wrestling Center parking lot last week.

Can Atlas end Escobar’s reign? Or will Legado del Fantasma strike back?

WWE also uploaded video of an angle where Atlas tried to attack Legado del Fantasma with a lead pipe in the parking lot before tonight’s show and laid out Joaquin Wilde. Atlas said he’s sick of Legado del Fantasma’s numbers game.

Escobar cut a promo calling Atlas a rat and promising to beat him down.

A fatal five-way match for a future Cruiserweight title shot will take place on 205 Live this Friday.

Here’s the updated lineup for tonight’s NXT:

  • NXT North American Champion Johnny Gargano defends his title against an opponent that will be determined by the “Wheel of Challengers”
  • NXT Tag Team Champions Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch defend their titles against Breezango
  • Raquel Gonzalez vs. Xia Li
  • Toni Storm vs. Candice LeRae
  • NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar defends against Jake Atlas

WWE adds Santos Escobar vs. Jake Atlas to NXT Halloween Havoc

WWE has announced a new addition to the card for NXT Halloween Havoc.

NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar will face Jake Atlas in a non-title match on this Wednesday’s Halloween Havoc episode of NXT. The match comes after Escobar and Atlas faced off in six-man tag team action on NXT last week.

Six-man tag match announced for WWE NXT

A six-man tag match has been added to the lineup for tonight’s episode of NXT.

WWE announced this morning that Isaiah “Swerve” Scott, Jake Atlas & Ashante “Thee” Adonis will face Legado del Fantasma (NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar, Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde) on NXT tonight. The match was set up after Atlas and Adonis faced off on NXT last week.

Mendoza and Wilde distracted Adonis during his match against Atlas last week, which led to Atlas using an inside cradle to pin Adonis. Mendoza and Wilde went to attack Adonis after the match, but Atlas took Mendoza and Wilde out with a dive. Escobar then joined his Legado del Fantasma stablemates, but Scott came into the ring with steel chairs. Scott, Adonis, and Atlas stared down Legado del Fantasma until they backed off.

Escobar retained his NXT Cruiserweight Championship against Scott at TakeOver 31 earlier this month. When Mendoza and Wilde got involved in the match, Adonis appeared and helped fight them off. Escobar got the win after sending Scott’s head into exposed steel on the bottom turnbuckle.

Breezango defending their NXT Tag Team titles against Undisputed Era’s Roderick Strong & Bobby Fish is also set for tonight’s NXT. Plus, Tommaso Ciampa, Kushida, and Velveteen Dream will face off in a triple threat match.

WWE 205 Live results: Ashante ‘Thee’ Adonis vs. Brian Kendrick

Jake Atlas defeated Ariya Daivari

Ariya Daivari started the match with a quick set of jabs which triggered a Jake Atlas fury. Atlas unloaded passionate strikes on the ring’s inside before throwing Daivari to the floor below. Atlas threw Daivari into the barricade before reentering the ring.

Daivari reset the match with a punch to the throat. Daivari’s offense that followed did not match the energy shown by Atlas in the earliest moments but instead was prolonged and ground-based. Atlas’s attempt to regain control was stopped by a clever dropkick to a slumped over Atlas. Daivari then continued to slowly pick apart Atlas. Atlas tried for an elbow that Daivari avoided and punished with a DDT. Atlas tried for a crucifix pin that Daivari kicked from and punished with a clothesline.

Daivari threw Atlas into the corner, which Atlas bounced out of with a forearm. An Atlas back body drop, single-leg dropkick, and German suplex followed. After landing a pump kick on Daivari in the corner, Atlas tried for a big hook. Daivari ducked the punch and landed a neckbreaker, regaining his control. Daivari landed a top-rope splash and nearly scored the fall. Atlas was then hoisted into position for the hammerlock lariat which a quick elbow prevented. Atlas was then able to land a pump kick that sent Daivari to the outside. Atlas wasted no time, setting up for and connecting with a tope.

Without any warning, enter Tony Nese in full sprint. A Nese running knee then laid Atlas out, leaving him with a disqualification victory.

This match was very strong throughout. Atlas and Daivari both worked hard to make a simple match formula meaningful. The run-in was genuinely emotional due to the A-1 work that it extinguished all too soon.

Ashante “Thee” Adonis defeated The Brian Kendrick

Brian Kendrick was caught in the opening moments as Ashante Adonis landed a series of supercuts in the corner. Kendrick tried to lift Adonis for a suplex but instead found himself on the receiving end of an Adonis dropkick and back body drop. Adonis hit a clothesline that caused Kendrick to fall to the floor.

As Adonis tried to follow up it looked as if he accidentally was caught by a baggy ring skirt. Kendrick, without hesitation, took full advantage. After driving Adonis headfirst into the barricade Kendrick returned to the ring. Kendrick attempted to follow up his newfound lead with a kick but was caught by Adonis. A back and forth offensive struggle followed but it was Adonis who landed a crossbody and a DDT to nearly secure the win. A spinebuster left him even closer. Adonis declared it his time before being dropped with a ton of strong kicks.

Kendrick secured the captain’s hook. Adonis was able to roll onto Kendrick, nearly pinning him. Kendrick tried again for the hook but was kicked in the jaw for even trying. Adonis waited for Kendrick to rise and dropped him with a superkick. Adonis then hooked the leg and pinned Kendrick clean in the middle.

For the third time, Adonis and Kendrick shook hands in the ring’s middle following the conclusion.

This match was the best outing of this particular pairing. Adonis seemed as if he had something to prove, delivering a focused performance as the match’s standout. Likewise, Kendrick played the veteran role perfectly.

205 Live’s debut in the Capitol Wrestling Center took place inside of an NXT dressed ring – yellow ropes, NXT turnbuckle pads, etcetera. The ring skirt featured the typical 205 Live branding. Whether this is a decision worth looking into or an oversight is currently undeterminable.

The content of the 200th 205 Live episode was the best in the pandemic era. The matches were fun and dramatic. All in all, a great show.

Tommaso Ciampa to face Jake Atlas on WWE NXT next week

Tommaso Ciampa is set for action on next week’s episode of NXT.

WWE announced tonight that Ciampa vs. Jake Atlas will take place on NXT next Wednesday. The match was set up when Atlas confronted Ciampa on tonight’s show.

Three weeks ago, Ciampa returned to NXT television and quickly defeated Atlas. He continued to destroy Atlas after the match, including giving Atlas a DDT on the floor after he had been put on a stretcher. Ciampa had been off TV since losing to Karrion Kross at TakeOver: In Your House this June.

Ciampa squashed Desmond Troy in their match on tonight’s NXT. Ciampa went to get a steel chair after, but the returning Atlas made his way out to the stage and cut a promo on Ciampa. Atlas said he could have jumped Ciampa from behind, but he’s not a coward. Atlas challenged Ciampa to a match for next week and said he’ll show Ciampa how dangerous he can be. Ciampa responded by smirking at Atlas.

Later on tonight’s show, Ciampa ambushed Atlas while he was being interviewed in the parking lot. Ciampa attacked Atlas until being stopped by officials and Kyle O’Reilly. O’Reilly told Ciampa to save it for next week and said this wasn’t the time or place. Ciampa said he’ll see Atlas next week — and he’ll be seeing O’Reilly too.

NXT Champion Finn Balor and NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai’s challengers for TakeOver will be determined on next Wednesday’s NXT. A gauntlet eliminator match will decide Balor’s challenger, while a number one contender’s battle royal will decide Shirai’s challenger. TakeOver is taking place on Sunday, October 4.

WWE 205 Live results: Ariya Daivari vs. Jake Atlas

Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde (with Santos Escobar) defeated Chase Parker and Matt Martel (Ever-Rise)

After Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde were in the ring, Ever-Rise made their entrance to a surprisingly warm welcome. While they seem to be heels still, the Chase Parker and Matt Martel pairing were welcomed with cheers; their hated opponents surely were the reason for this change in reaction (at least in the context of the match before its beginning).

Chants of “Ever-Rise” accompanied the opening moments of the matchup. Martel and Mendoza started the match with an unfamiliar energy. The two briefly traded holds. Martel grew more and more confident as he maintained a semblance of control. An elbow to Mendoza’s midsection allowed for the tag to Parker.

Parker would go on to lose the advantage gained by his partner after venturing too far into Legado Del Fantasma territory. Wilde sneakily tagged into the match and planted an unexpecting Parker with a DDT. Wilde mocked the now dazed Parker. Wilde attacked Parker with a haughty ease. Only after a complete sequence of domination and a knee to act as punctuation did Wilde tag his partner back. The Legado Del Fantasma subjugation continued under Mendoza’s control.

Parker was eventually able to float over an attack after a prolonged period of being grounded. A hot tag followed. Martel connected with many a move on both Wilde and Mendoza, shifting the match into the favor of Ever-Rise. This lead seamlessly into Ever-Rise’s set up for the double-team double-knee facebuster on Wilde only for Mendoza to pull Parker to the outside. Wilde was then able to hold Martel still long enough for Mendoza to land an enziguri, which was sufficient for the pin.

After watching from bell to bell, it is safe to say that this match served as a babyface turn for Ever-Rise. Martel played babyface during the entirety of the contest. He had a babyface comeback, wore babyface facials, and, along with his partner, was cheered as a babyface.

This match was fine, at best. It should be a building block for the future of Ever-Rise and a footnote in the case of Legado Del Fantasma superiority..

Ariya Daivari defeated Jake Atlas

As the match began, Jake Atlas initiated an early tie-up. Ariya Daivari soon found himself pressed against the ropes from where he called for a referee break. Daivari pushed Atlas while the referee was trying to separate the two. A second tie-up saw Atlas take Daivari to the mat with a side headlock. Daivari resorted to pulling the hair of Atlas to break the side headlock. The break lasted mere seconds as Atlas secured the headlock again almost as soon as he had lost it. A sequence similar to this then played out again.

Daivari was finally able to break the side headlock chain with a forearm to the back. Atlas tried to maintain his advantage, but a knee strike from Daivari furthered his lead. A dropkick from Daivari sent Atlas crashing to the outside from where Daivari drove Atlas into the barricade and the announcer’s table. A rope-assisted neck breaker allowed Daivari to cement his heat. Daivari worked Atlas on the mat. Daivari held the wrist of Atlas while kicking him in insolent fashion.

Daivari’s cocksure offense would be his undoing. Atlas fought back from the kicks in a show of courage. Strikes a plenty found their way to Daivari from a desperate Atlas. A German suplex from Atlas led perfectly to an enziguri. Daivari kicked out from the pin attempt that followed.

Atlas and Daivari were now on equal footing. Daivari landed a big boot, Atlas a punt in response. Atlas secured the head of Daivari and planted him with a DDT, Daivari kicked out. Atlas landed a springboard guillotine, and Daivari rolled out of the ring. Atlas connected with a suicide dive, Daivari whipped Atlas as soon as the two re-entered the ropes. Again they were on equal footing.

Daivari tried to remove the turnbuckle pad, but it drew the attention of the referee. Atlas went for a rollup, but Daivari kicked out. Daivari then thumbed the eyes of Atlas. Daivari grabbed his now blinded opponent and connected with the hammerlock lariat. Daivari pinned Atlas for the win.

This match was just not very interesting. Headlocks in the opening act and eye-gouging in the last is not a recipe for success, baring an extraordinary performance. Nothing ever felt the least bit at stake.
