Intercontinental title match set for next week’s WWE SmackDown

The Intercontinental Championship will be on the line on next week’s WWE SmackDown.

For the first time since June, Gunther will defend the Intercontinental title in a televised match, defending against Shinsuke Nakamura on the August 12 SmackDown episode.

Nakamura defeated Ludwig Kaiser in a number one contender’s match on this week’s episode to earn the title shot on August 12.

Gunther’s last televised defense came against Ricochet on the June 24 SmackDown episode.

Since winning the title from Ricochet on the June 10 SmackDown, Gunther has made the one televised defense against Ricochet, plus 13 defenses on house shows.

In his 13 house show defenses, Gunther defeated Ricochet in singles matches 11 times, won a triple threat against Nakamura and Ricochet once, and a triple threat against Madcap Moss and Ricochet one time.

Nakamura has held the IC title on two previous occasions, most recently from August 2021 to February 2022.

Next week’s SmackDown lineup so far:

The following are spoilers from Wednesday’s pre-Dynamite Dark: Elevation taping and post-Dynamite Rampage taping in Duluth, Georgia.

AEW Rampage for July 22:

  • Hangman Adam Page & John Silver def. The Butcher & The Blade. Page pinned the Butcher with a buckshot lariat for the win.
  • Claudio Castagnoli cut a promo and thanked AEW fans for making him feel welcome. Castagnoli went on to promote his upcoming ROH World Title Match against Jonathan Gresham. Castagnoli said that Gresham’s foundation is about to crack because he tugged on Superman’s cape.
  • Lee Moriarty def. Dante Martin after pinning him with a handful of tights.
  • Britt Baker & Jamie Hayter def. Skye Blue & Ashley D’Amboise. This was a pretty short match where nothing of substance really happened. Baker submitted D’Amboise to score the victory.

Meanwhile, Caster had lines about Zach Wilson, Pokémon, and more. The guest DJ awarded Caster with the win, which prompted a brawl between The Acclaimed and The Gunn Club. The segment ended with Austin Gunn hitting Caster with a trash can.
  • Jay Lethal def. Christopher Daniels via Lethal Injection. This featured some interference from Sonjay Dutt and Satnam Singh. After the bout, the trio beat up Daniels at ringside to end the show.

Two matches announced for next week’s NXT UK

Two matches have been announced for NXT UK.

NXT UK Women’s Champion Meiko Satomura will team up with Sarray to face the team of Eliza Alexander and Xia Brookside next week as well. Alexander and Brookside confronted Sarray in the gym on Thursday’s show and Satomura came to her defense.

The match between Williams and Turan was filmed on Wednesday, June 22 from BT Sports Studios in London. Eliza Alexander & Xia Brookside vs. Meiko Satomura & Sarray was filmed the following day from the same venue.

The full lineup for next Thursday’s edition of WWE NXT UK is as follows:

New Tag Team Champions crowned on NXT UK

After twice unsuccessfully challenging for the titles, Oliver Carter & Ashton Smith are finally the NXT UK Tag Team Champions.

Carter & Smith won the titles by defeating Moustache Mountain (Tyler Bate & Trent Seven) and Die Familie (Teoman & Rohan Raja) in a triple threat match on this week’s NXT UK. Dissension between Bate and Seven led to Moustache Mountain losing the titles.

Seven was going to use one of the NXT UK Tag Team title belts as a weapon, but Bate wanted to win the right way and tried to take the belt from Seven. As they argued, Carter took out Bate with a dive to the outside. Smith then rolled up Seven to get the win.

Bate and Seven continued to argue after the match, with Seven walking off and telling Bate that he’s “done.”

The story leading into this week’s title match has been centered on Bate being unhappy with Seven cheating to win their matches. Both of their previous title defenses against Carter & Smith were successful due to Seven cheating to win.

Moustache Mountain had been NXT UK Tag Team Champions since winning the titles from Pretty Deadly last December.

Strong, Grimes, and A-Kid all lost their original qualifying bouts. North American Champion Carmelo Hayes, Grayson Waller, Solo Sikoa, and Santos Escobar have already qualified for the ladder match.

Also set for next week, LA Knight will team with MSK against Imperium’s Gunther, Marcel Barthel, and Fabian Aichner. The trios bout was set up on this week’s NXT episode, where LA Knight confronted and attacked Gunther while challenging him to a Stand & Deliver match. Barthel and Aichner saved for Gunther, while MSK ran in to save Knight. Barthel and Aichner will defend the NXT Tag Team titles against MSK and The Creed Brothers in a three-way at Stand & Deliver.

Number one contender’s match set for AEW Dynamite

After coming up short at Revolution, Thunder Rosa is getting the chance to earn another shot at the AEW Women’s World Championship.

AEW has announced that a number one contender’s match between Rosa and Leyla Hirsch will take place on Dynamite this Wednesday. The winner will challenge Britt Baker for the AEW Women’s World title on the St. Patrick’s Day Slam edition of Dynamite the following week (Wednesday, March 16).

Baker retained her title against Rosa at Revolution tonight after Jamie Hayter and Rebel interfered throughout the match. Rosa gave Rebel a spear off the apron and took out Hayter, but Baker hit a stomp on Rosa when she came back into the ring and then pinned her.

Hirsch defeated Kris Statlander on the Buy-In show for Revolution.

St. Patrick’s Day Slam is being held in Rosa’s hometown of San Antonio, Texas.

At last year’s St. Patrick’s Day Slam, Rosa defeated Baker in an unsanctioned lights out match. It was the first-ever women’s match to main event an episode of Dynamite.

Sammy Guevara defending his TNT Championship against Scorpio Sky is also set for this Wednesday’s Dynamite. Wardlow will challenge the winner of that match for the TNT Championship at St. Patrick’s Day Slam. Wardlow got the title shot by winning tonight’s Face of the Revolution ladder match.

Number one contender’s match set for next week’s WWE Raw

Becky Lynch’s challenger for the Royal Rumble will be decided on next week’s episode of Raw.

WWE has announced that a triple threat number one contender’s match between Liv Morgan, Bianca Belair, and Doudrop will take place on Raw next Monday. The winner will get a Raw Women’s Championship shot against Lynch at the Royal Rumble.

At WWE Day 1 last Saturday, Lynch defeated Morgan to retain the Raw Women’s Championship. It appeared that Lynch was supposed to cheat by having her feet on the ropes while pinning Morgan, but the ropes were too far away and Lynch couldn’t get her feet on them.

Morgan and Belair interrupted Lynch on Raw tonight, and they both wanted the next shot at her title. Later in the night, Doudrop went to WWE officials Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville and complained about the same women always getting opportunities. Doudrop demanded to challenge for the Raw Women’s Championship. Pearce and Deville responded by announcing next week’s triple threat number one contender’s match.

The Royal Rumble is taking place at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis on Saturday, January 29.

TNT title match added to AEW Battle of the Belts

Cody Rhodes will defend the TNT title against Sammy Guevara at Battle of the Belts this weekend.

AEW’s Twitter confirmed the match this afternoon. It will be a rematch of their bout from the Christmas episode of Rampage, where Rhodes defeated Guevara to win the championship for a third time.

During the break on last week’s Dynamite, Guevara issued a challenge to Cody using cue cards. Cody most recently defended the title on the episode of Rampage that aired this past Friday, where he defeated Ethan Page to retain the title.

Also announced for Battle of the Belts is an AEW Women’s Championship match, with Britt Baker defending against Riho. Their feud dates back to November, with Riho winning a Black Friday Deal match where if she defeated Baker, she would get a future title match.

Battle of the Belts will take place this Saturday, January 8, at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Rohit Raju becomes free agent as Impact Wrestling run ends

Former Impact Wrestling X-Division Champion Rohit Raju took to Twitter Sunday night to announce he is a free agent as his deal with the company has come to an end.

Raju (Hakim Zane) had been with the company since 2017. While not explicitly stated, it’s assumed his deal expired at the end of 2021.

His role increased and his ring name changed in 2018 as he became a fixture in the X-Division along with forming the Desi Hit Squad faction.

The 41-year-old first won the X-Division title in August 2020 in a three-way with then-champion Chris Bey and TJP at Emergence. He would lose the title nearly four months later to Manik (TJP) at Final Resolution and never regained it.

His last in-ring action on Impact TV was in a December loss to Josh Alexander, followed by a defeat to Josh Mathews at Impact’s Throwback Throwdown 2 event where he wrestled as Quincy Cosmos.

In addition to Impact, Raju has wrestled frequently on the indies through the years and has been a constant in Midwest indie AAW where he recently lost their Heritage title to Ace Austin and Myron Reed in a three-way.

Sasha Banks says she is ‘good’ after WWE house show injury scare

Sasha Banks says she’s “good” after she was helped to the back following a house show match against Charlotte Flair tonight in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Video and photos from the match show Banks landing awkwardly on a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, as her left knee appears to buckle. There then appears to be communication with the referee in the match, followed by a pause in the action as Banks looks to be determining whether or not she can make it back to her feet. After Charlotte’s double moonsault spot, Banks reversed a cradle, but Flair then quickly hit Natural Selection for the finish. The referee then threw up the “x” sign, and Banks was helped to the back by a referee and WWE ringside physician Dr. Chris Amann.

Banks later tweeted:

“I’m good

Thank you for the love always.”

Banks has been challenging Flair for the SmackDown Women’s Championship on house shows, including on five consecutive days during the WWE Holiday Tour last week. In her last televised match, Banks and Toni Storm defeated Flair and Shotzi on the December 17 SmackDown.

Drew McIntyre reportedly suffering from legit neck issues

Drew McIntyre is reportedly suffering from legitimate neck issues that caused him to be written out during tonight’s Day 1 event.

PWInsider is reporting that McIntyre has been dealing with neck issues that require him to undergo medical testing. The hope is that this will only cause McIntyre to be gone for a short amount of time, but PWInsider’s source said that it’s “up in the air” until McIntyre is checked out. They also reported that McIntyre was wearing a neck brace when he left the pay-per-view tonight.

McIntyre defeated Madcap Moss on tonight’s show. Later, he was being interviewed in a backstage segment when Happy Corbin and Moss jumped him. They placed a chair over his neck as Corbin grabbed a piece of stage equipment nearby and slammed it into the chair, injuring McIntyre’s neck.

In the last week, McIntyre worked the SmackDown brand house shows, working multiple times on a single show.
