Eric Bischoff ‘confident’ Real American Freestyle will land streaming deal

Eric Bischoff says he’s confident his new venture with Hulk Hogan, Real American Freestyle, will land a broadcast deal.

Bischoff and Hogan were guests on Monday’s episode of The Ariel Helwani Show. During the interview, Bischoff was asked about where the promotion’s debut event on August 30 will air. He responded:

“As a matter of fact, as soon as we’re done with this, I have a call with a major platform that everybody would know about and recognize. We may end up there, we may not. We are going to end up on a platform on August 30th. We’re in discussions. I don’t even want to call negotiations. I’ll be really straightforward with you on this. We’re in discussions with two different platforms. Like I said, one over the next 45 minutes. I’m confident that we’re going to land a streaming opportunity and it may be a cable broadcast, but time will tell, you know.”

“I’m not concerned that we won’t have a platform. I’m only concerned with which one it will be and how it will work for us.”

Also during the conversation, Hogan and Bischoff mentioned their goal is to run one event per month. The Real American Freestyle website lists an event in Michigan for October and one in New Jersey for November, but no other details have been disclosed.

Bischoff was also asked about the status of Olympic gold medalist Kyle Snyder with the promotion. Snyder is one of 8 athletes to be featured on the RAF website. Snyder was recently revealed as one of 16 men arrested as part of a prostitution sting in Ohio earlier this month. Bischoff says they will review the matter internally.

“I just read about that about an hour ago, actually. I’ve been on the phone all morning and we’ll talk about it internally. I don’t know enough about the facts to comment on it here. Other than to say, I don’t know how old Kyle is, but as a young man or woman, once you start reaching certain levels of success in life and people know who you are, it becomes even more critical that you are careful in the way you conduct yourself, whether it’s in the business or away from the business.”

Hogan was also asked about the negative reaction he received at the WWE on Netflix premiere earlier this year. He responded that the media treats him differently than others when he’s booed.

“The last time I was in LA, I was Hollywood with the black beard and doing the bad guy thing. I can go out there and get booed in LA or The Rock can get booed in LA or John Cena gets booed in LA but when I get booed, there’s a whole different reaction media wise. For some reason I’ve laid some type of groundwork that people are still interested in what I’m doing. And so for those that are on the team and are riding with the train to the station, that’s great. For those that are the haters and still have a problem with me, there’s nothing I can do to fix that except just keep proving by my actions that I’m still in the game. I’m still pushing hard.”

“When you get booed and then you get 3.2 billion engagements, and you rock that whole world in LA with how much interaction there was on the internet, I’ll take it.”

Hogan was asked if he felt it was people booing his character rather than him personally. Hogan responded:

“All of the above. There were certain people who boo the character, there were certain WWE Superstars who had an opinion and had advice for me but I would like to ask the same guys when I go to New York or Chicago and the people cheer out of the rooftops, I would like to know what their advice is then and what their opinion is.”

“So it’s a double-edged sword and it’s always been that. It’s part of the character, it’s part of me personally, it’s part of my professional life, it’s part of my personal life, it’s all the above. And at the end of the day I’m just like an old scarred up seal with a bunch of scars on me and I’m really relatable to most normal people because a lot of people have been through a lot of stuff I have professionally.”

Bischoff and Hogan’s full appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show is available below:

Shelton Benjamin responds to Hulk Hogan calling him ‘Benjamin Shelton’

After Hulk Hogan called him by the wrong name multiple times in interviews, Shelton Benjamin has issued a response.

A clip has been circulating on social media today with Hogan calling Benjamin by the name “Benjamin Shelton” while appearing on The Pat McAfee Show and speaking with TMZ Sports. The latter was to promote Hogan and Eric Bischoff’s new Real American Freestyle organization — and Hogan named Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, and “Benjamin Shelton” as some of the amateur wrestlers who have found success in pro wrestling.

In response, Benjamin tweeted the following and accompanied it with a GIF of Will Smith saying “keep my name out of your f*cking mouth.”

“Message to @HulkHogan. You lost me forever with your ‘don’t get caught’ …or as you would call it ‘apology’ speech,” Benjamin wrote. “So rather than screw up my name and pretend we ever had any sort of camaraderie which we never had. Please do me a favor & [keep my name out of your f*cking mouth]”

Benjamin is referencing a speech Hogan gave to the WWE locker room in 2018 when he was reinstated into the WWE Hall of Fame. That was Hogan’s return to the company following a 2015 racism scandal where — on a leaked tape from years prior — Hogan used the n-word multiple times and admitted to being “racist, to a point.” Hogan’s speech to the locker room included him urging them to be careful because everyone has cell phones and cameras now, and some people took it as Hogan being more concerned with being caught than being remorseful for his actions. Hogan has said he believes that’s an incorrect interpretation of his apology.

Benjamin was released by WWE in 2023 and has since joined AEW, where he holds the AEW Tag Team titles with Bobby Lashley. Their Hurt Syndicate associate MVP also responded to the clip of Hogan getting Benjamin’s name wrong.

“Pathological lying piece of human excrement,” MVP tweeted.

WWE

  • Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff & Izzy Martinez were on Fox & Friends this morning to promote their new Real American Freestyle amateur wrestling venture. Hogan said they do not want to compete with WWE and UFC, but Real American Freestyle’s goal is to be just as big or bigger than them:
    • Our goal is not to be competitive with Dana White and the UFC or the WWE, but to be just as big or bigger. Because this is an underserved market.
  • Hogan told TMZ Sports that he plans to make a “special phone call” to invite Donald Trump to Real American Freestyle’s first event.
  • Erik of The War Raiders said on Insight with Chris Van Vliet that he’d like to have a singles run, but he never wants his tag team with Ivar to break up:
    • Yes – so, absolutely [he thinks about having a singles run]. I think there is untapped potential there where I don’t have any doubt. Ivar proved it when I was down with a neck injury that, ‘Give me the ball and I can perform at any point on the card.’ Like, I have full confidence in my ability that – you want me to cut a promo? Great, I’ll cut a promo. You want me to – whatever, whoever, anybody on our roster, especially our roster now, it’s ridiculously talented, like ridiculously stacked and talented. You want me to wrestle AJ Styles on Raw? Great. I’ll tear the house down. You want me to wrestle – pick a guy, anybody. I have a skill set, and I’ve been doing this since 2003. From the indies, I was [a] good guy, bad guy, comedy guy, you know, you’ve seen it just in WWE with Viking Raiders. We’re serious, we’re scary, we’re heels, we’re comedy, whatever, wherever you want to go. We can do that. We have the skill set. So absolutely, there is a part of me that wants to have that spotlight always. We’re in this as wrestlers, but there’s also part of me that I never want that to be at the expense of being The War Raiders.
  • Zelina Vega told Screen Rant that she’d like her first United States Women’s Championship defense to be against Dakota Kai:
    • Dakota, honestly – I would love to give her the first shot. I’m just saying that. Like, Dakota Kai gets first shot. I would love that. She’s become like a sister to me.
  • The Miz has launched a new YouTube channel called Miz Golf:

Wednesday Update

WWE

  • WWE is promoting John Cena vs. Randy Orton at Backlash with the tagline “One Last Time.” The match is Cena’s first Undisputed WWE Championship defense of his retirement tour, which will conclude in December 2025.
  • Hulk Hogan told Forbes that he felt “disconnected” from John Cena’s heel turn when WWE didn’t follow up on The Rock appearing at Elimination Chamber:
    • At the end of the day, when he turned heel—like the [nWo] storyline, like Eric [Bischoff] said—we set it up, we set up, we set up, then we delivered. And then not only did we deliver, we rolled out with me, Hall and Nash. And that story kept snowballing and snowballing, and we kept getting more evil and evil. And so for me, watching that story with John Cena, when The Rock did the throat thing, cut his throat, and John Cena turned heel, I expected more of the same.
    • And then John Cena came out and there was no Rock, and I just got disconnected at that point, ’cause I was expecting the characters to keep rolling out like we did. So I know everybody’s got movies and obligations and stuff, but it didn’t feel like that big tidal wave coming at you. Like when the nWo took over, man, I even hate to say the word, we just cleaned house and beat everybody’s ass, and we just killed it. All the babyfaces were crying and complaining, and it got really ugly. We were so powerful with that trio.
  • In an interview with Undisputed, Jimmy Hart called Paul Heyman the greatest manager of all time:
    • It’s Paul Heyman. He’s my favorite, and he’s been doing this at such a high level for so long. What he’s doing now is the best stuff in wrestling. He’s putting food on the table for a lot of people in WWE.
    • Paul Heyman, he’s magic. He makes every part of what he’s doing so meaningful. That’s what I tried to do, too–if they were going to paint me yellow, then I brought the paint. Paul is the same way–you have to watch to see what he’s going to do next. He’s a genius.
  • Dakota Kai, who hasn’t wrestled in more than a month, tweeted yesterday: “I miss wrestling and I miss you guys”
  • Kai then followed that up with another post: “Not hurt btw!”
  • WWE uploaded the full IYO SKY & Jordynne Grace vs. Giulia & Roxanne Perez main event from NXT last night.
  • SKY thanked the audience for the reception they gave her on NXT: “What an amazing night!! The NXT universe welcomed me very warmly!! Thank you #WWENXT!!!”
  • On commentary during NXT, Corey Graves acknowledged Meiko Satomura’s retirement and congratulated her on having an unbelievable career.
  • Sol Ruca appeared on the post-NXT edition of Busted Open Radio After Dark.
  • Busted Open and Screen Rant have interviews with Zelina Vega. After winning the WWE Women’s United States title last Friday, Vega told Busted Open that – while in New York – she’s going to the 9/11 Memorial so she can place single’s gold on her late father Michael Trinidad’s name:
    • I am going to the 9/11 Memorial and finally getting to put single’s gold on my dad’s name at the memorial. So I’m very, very excited to finally do that. And, I mean, the thing is, it doesn’t mean that the journey is over in that sense because I still – there’s always a part of you that’s like, ‘I want the World title.’ I do. And I think if anything, this inspires me to show people who I am as a champion. And you kind of have a duty to show them how you can rock with that title too.
    • So it’s nice to be able to finally just do this and have that moment because I’ve wanted it for so, so long.
  • Montez Ford has been announced as one of the inductees for the Boys & Girls Club of America Alumni Hall of Fame class of 2025. Ford said he’s “humbled, grateful, and truly honored” by the induction.
  • WWE uploaded a behind-the-scenes vlog from NXT Stand & Deliver.

Other Wrestling

  • TNT Champion Adam Cole told Comicbook.com that Will Ospreay and Kevin Knight are two of the people he really wants to face in AEW.
  • Cole praised the work Ricochet is doing as a heel:
    • Unbelievable. I mean, again, when you look at Ricochet, anyone who’s seen Ricochet wrestle, he’s maybe the best athlete I’ve ever seen. Just like an absolute freak of nature. We jokingly in the locker room – we call him an alien. Like, he’s not even a real person. He’s not even a human being. The things he can do [are] just absolutely unbelievable.
    • Clearly one of the best, one of the most athletically gifted guys in the entire world, but getting to see this different side of Ricochet has been so much fun because he’s showing the world what he can bring to the table. Maybe people thought, ‘Oh, ok, cool. He can do all these really, really cool athletic things, and that’s awesome, and we really love that.’ But now he’s showing what a great character he can be. The timing that he has. His aura right now is absolutely unbelievable. So, yeah, Ricochet’s work has been absolutely incredible to watch. It’s been super, super fun. And I’ll tell you what, I may be a good guy, but I’m liking this new side of Ricochet. I am.
  • The Express spoke with Samoa Joe.
  • First Up with Korolnek & Colaiacovo interviewed Adam Copeland.
  • Billie Starkz noted that she’s only a few classes away from obtaining her associate’s degree: “Exams next week and then Summer break! Three classes away from my associates degree! Woohooo!”
  • TNA announced that we’ll hear from Steve Maclin on this Thursday’s live episode of Impact following his successful International title defense against Eric Young at Rebellion.
  • Matt Riddle will defend his MLW World Heavyweight title against Donovan Dijak at the promotion’s Azteca Lucha show in Cicero, Illinois on Saturday, May 10.
  • Marigold is holding a press conference overnight tonight at 3 a.m. Eastern time.

Hulk Hogan names Toni Storm as his favorite AEW women’s wrestler

Hulk Hogan is a fan of the work “Timeless” Toni Storm is doing in AEW.

Forbes published an interview with Hogan and Eric Bischoff on Wednesday about their new Real American Freestyle amateur wrestling venture. During the conversation, the subject of AEW Dynamite surpassing WCW Nitro as the longest-running weekly wrestling series in TBS/TNT history came up. Hogan said he believes Nitro has left a bigger impact than Dynamite, but he has respect for what AEW is doing.

“Well, I don’t know Tony Khan, I got nothing but respect for what he’s done, and how he’s pushed and created opportunities for these guys,” Hogan said. “And you can get hooked into some of those storylines. I started watching some of those girls grind out there, and I’ve never seen people work so hard in my life. Some of the girls, phew, some of [the] bloodbaths and some of the stuff I’ve seen is kind of really cool stuff. But I like the grit and the real aggressive stuff. But yeah, nothing but respect for Tony Khan.”

When asked if he has a favorite wrestler in the AEW women’s division, Hogan offered praise for Storm and Mariah May.

“Bro, I kind of like was all over the place until I watched that Toni Storm,” he said. “The one that acts like the 1920s, the Roaring ’20s. Bro, when I saw her start grinding in there and digging, and when I saw her gaffe through her hairline, when she pulled that blade through her hairline and she needed about 10 staples, I went: ‘Holy crap, this girl ain’t playing.’ And the girl she was wrestling [May], I can’t remember her name. It was like a protege or a really hot blonde… Yeah, bro. She was grinding too, man. And I’m telling you, those girls, I would not want to be in that match with them. They were playing hardball.”

The match Hogan is referring to is Storm and May’s Hollywood Ending from AEW Revolution 2025, where Storm defeated May to remain AEW Women’s World Champion. It’s rumored that May — who has not competed since that match — could be headed to WWE when she’s contractually able to.

Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff announce Real American Freestyle Wrestling

Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff are entering the world of professional freestyle wrestling.

Earlier this week, the pair teased a new project and a mysterious “third man” who would be involved. On Wednesday, they announced Real American Freestyle Wrestling, a professional freestyle wrestling league set to launch this summer. They also revealed world-renowned wrestling coach Izzy Martinez as their mystery third man.

Real American Freestyle Wrestling will feature eight men’s weight classes and four women’s weight classes. The promotion’s first event is scheduled for August 30 in Cleveland.

Hogan says his inspiration for launching the league came from watching Wyatt Hendrickson defeat Gable Steveson to win the NCAA National Heavyweight title in March and then celebrate with the U.S. President.

“When I saw that happen and I saw our President hug him, I went, OK, we are on point, we’re ready to go and instincts have prevailed and I smell victory,” Hogan told the Associated Press. “I think we’re right on track, brother.”

Neither Steveson nor Hendrickson are currently signed to the new league, although Hogan teased a possible rematch between the two as something the company has on its radar.

“These kids are young, they’re smart. They’re watching TV. They know about branding, they know what sells. And they’ve all got that little Conor McGregor swag,” Hogan continued.

Olympic silver medalist Kennedy Blades has committed to the league. Hogan says she will be the face of the women’s division. Ben Askren and Zahid Valencia will compete on the men’s side.

Hogan says Bischoff is setting up the new league from a production standpoint.

“Eric jumped in with both feet, and he’s doing a lot to guide this ship right now, brother,” Hogan said. “He’s setting so much stuff up production wise — just moving us forward, light years ahead of where we could have been on our own.”

Martinez is a world-renowned freestyle wrestling and MMA coach and founder of the Izzy Style Wrestling training program in Illinois. He’s helped train Jon Jones for UFC fights, and was Holly Holm’s wrestling coach for her victory over Ronda Rousey at UFC 193. Martinez will serve as the league’s Chief Operating Officer. Hogan will be the league’s commissioner.

“I see this as an opportunity for me to get involved,” Hogan said, “to get back, quit sitting on the couch, to get involved with a bunch of powerful athletes that I can relate to as far as championship material, guys that are on top of their game, and I just — I couldn’t pass on it.”

Bischoff and Hogan also spoke with Forbes about the new league. According to Bischoff, RAFW will be about “World-class athletes, elite-level athletes, Olympic-level wrestlers, collegiate champions, but in a professional environment with a lot more entertainment.”

Hogan added:

“Well, I think Eric described it the best when he said if you think of The Voice. You do the backstories first, so the people care about the athletes, and you see where they started, and the injuries and what type of family background they have, and in the history package, I think that kind of sets people up to care for the athletes, like Eric said. And that’s where we’re going to begin, with the people warming up and getting to know the athletes, and then it’s up to the athletes to perform.”

Hulk Hogan & Eric Bischoff tease new project

Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff are reuniting for a new project, though concrete details about the venture are unknown.

The two posted an NWO-inspired teaser to their social media accounts on Monday morning hyping that they’re back and ready to “slice and dice the world of wrestling.” Hogan and Bischoff — longtime friends who have collaborated together in WCW, TNA, and on entertainment projects — said they have a third man who will be involved with this new endeavor.

“Should we tell them who our third man is? Should we talk about his credentials? Should we talk about all of his championships? Should we talk about the world-class athletes that he has brought to the very top of this sport? Should we talk about that? No, not yet, not yet, not yet,” Bischoff said. “But do stay tuned, because when we do announce our third man, it’s going to rock your world.”

“He’s a badass, dude,” Hogan added. “He’s a real, real badass.”

The teaser was also posted by Bischoff’s 83 Weeks podcast, which he hosts with Conrad Thompson on the Podcast Heat network.

Hogan is the co-founder of Real American Beer, which announced a partnership with WWE earlier this year. He was booed by the Los Angeles crowd while promoting Real American Beer on Raw’s Netflix debut episode in January.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: The fallout from the first WrestleMania

I return to my longform history of pro wrestling series on the DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling show, looking back at April 1985 from my book DragonKingKarl’s 1984-1985 Pro Wrestling Omnibus.

The first WWF WrestleMania has ended, Hulk Hogan graces the cover of Sports Illustrated, the AWA remains strong, but Jim Crockett Promotions has nothing to answer the onslaught of the WWF.

There are multiple events in Japan with both New Japan and All Japan, but things are changing and the WWF is leading the charge.

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Show: March 1985 & the first WrestleMania

Today, the DKK Classic Wrestling Show returns to one of the most epic months in pro wrestling history: March 1985.

WWF WrestleMania took place at the end of the month but in the first weeks, “Dr. D.” David Schultz got fired (for real this time) from WWF, Hulk Hogan dropped talk show host Richard Belzer on his head and injured him, and both Hogan & Mr. T got a fortuitous opportunity dropped in their laps with a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live.

Plus, news from Japan, the NWA, SECW, AWA, World Class, and much more.

Much of the information for this show comes from my book, DragonKingKarl’s 1984-1985 Pro Wrestling Omnibus.

The Latest: Stone Cold Steve Austin & Hulk Hogan comment on John Cena’s turn

Welcome to another episode of The Latest with Denise Salcedo breaking down the biggest wrestling news headlines of the week so far.

Hulk Hogan: John Cena’s WWE heel turn ‘one of the best’ I’ve seen in a long time

Hulk Hogan says WWE “did it right” with John Cena’s heel turn at WWE Elimination Chamber.

Many fans have compared Cena aligning with The Rock to Hogan being revealed as the NWO’s third man at WCW Bash at the Beach 1996. Speaking with The Undisputed’s Justin Barrasso, Hogan called Cena’s turn “one of the best heel turns” he’s seen in a long time.

“Well, we definitely can see Cena now, can’t we?” Hogan said. “We know who he is now. He’s not signing autographs or doing what he’s been doing. That’s bigger than a wrestling angle.”

“It’s one of the best heel turns I’ve seen in a long, long time,” Hogan continued. “All the major players were involved. I can’t say enough about The Rock, too—he was incredible. They did it right, I’ll tell you that.”

Hogan also reflected on watching Cody Rhodes and The Rock’s fathers wrestle, as well as his early days driving for Rocky Johnson.

“I grew up watching Dusty Rhodes and Rocky Johnson,” Hogan said. “Before I started training, back when I was playing in a rock and roll band, I used to pick up Rocky Johnson and drive him to shows. I was such a fan—I’d borrow my girlfriend’s Torino and drive him all over. And when Rocky said, ‘You better get me to the Imperial Room before it closes,’ I’d haul butt to get him there in time.”

Hogan has not appeared live on WWE programming since receiving a negative reaction at the Netflix premiere on January 6. He later told Pat McAfee that he expected the fans to respond negatively to him on the show.

Hogan’s Real American Beer company is also facing a lawsuit from an Akron, Ohio, woman. Michelle Harlukowicz alleges that Hogan or one of his fellow promoters at a Real American Beer event last August threw a can of beer into the crowd, striking her and causing an injury that required 10 stitches.

Cody Rhodes is set to address Cena’s heel turn on WWE SmackDown this Friday.

Hulk Hogan, Real American Beer sued for alleged negligence causing injury

An Akron, Ohio woman is suing WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan and his Real American Beer company.

The Akron resident, Michelle Harlukowicz, alleges in a complaint that Hogan or one of his fellow promoters at a Real American Beer event in Medina, Ohio last August, threw a can of beer into the crowd that struck Harlukowicz and caused an open wound on her head that required 10 stitches to close and will cause permanent scarring.

The alleged incident happened on August 19, 2024 at the Thirsty Cowboys bar. Harlukowicz says that Hogan and event organizers were throwing cans of beer into the audience when one struck her from a distance of about 50 feet. Police were called to the scene at the time but refused to file charges as they could not determine with certainty who threw the beer can.

The bar and the bar owner are also being sued along with Hogan and Real American Beer. WWE announced last month that they purchased a minority ownership stake in Real American.

Harlukowicz seeks financial compensation from Hogan, Real American, Thirsty Cowboys and its owner for her medical expenses, as well as emotional distress, and pain and suffering.

Akron’s Fox 8 was first to report the story.
