We got a recap of the issues between Spanish Announce Project and Cole Karter & Griff Garrison.

Cole Karter & Griff Garrison (w/Maria) defeated Spanish Announce Project (Angelico & Serpentico)

Garrison and Angelico started, with Angelico handling Garrison on the mat. Karter pulled Garrison out of the ring and allowed him to reset and take Angelico down with a hip toss. Karter tagged in and clubbered on Angelico, but Angelico held onto the ropes on Karter’s dropkick attempt.

Serpentico tagged in and ran wild, sending Karter and Garrison to the floor before hitting a dive. Maria ran distraction, allowing Garrison to send Serpentico into the stairs. Karter and Garrison held the advantage on Serpentico until Serpentico got to his corner and tagged in Angelico.

Angelico ran wild on both men, hitting a misdirection head kick on Garrison for a nearfall. Angelico locked on a leg lock on Garrison, but Garrison kicked him off into a cheap shot from Karter. We got a move train that ended with all four men down. Serpentico tagged in, and as Karter sent Angelico into the barricade, Serpentico hit a cutter on Garrison for a nearfall.

Maria tried to run distraction, but Serpentico avoided a charge from Garrison to score a nearfall. Maria distracted Serpentico again, allowing Garrison to take Serpentico down. Maria wanted them to hurt Serpentico more, but a miscommunication allowed Serpentico to score a roll-up for a nearfall. Eventually, Karter snatched the mask off of Serpentico, allowing Garrison to hit a discus elbow for the win. They stomped on both Serpentico and Angelico before leaving and celebrating.

Blake Christian & Willie Mack defeated The Outrunners (Truth Magnum & Turbo Floyd)

The Outrunners shook each other’s hands instead of Christian and Mack’s. Christian outpaced Floyd to start before mocking the Outrunners pose. Christian took Floyd to the floor before hitting a Fosbury Flop. Magnum ran interference, allowing Floyd to hit a baseball slide to take him down.

Lee Johnson & The Infantry (Carlie Bravo & Shawn Dean) defeated Iron Savages (Boulder, Bronson & Jacked Jameson)

Bronson took down Johnson early, but Jameson took a dropkick when he tagged in. The Infantry made quick tags working on Jameson. Boulder tagged in and took out both of the Infantry before they sent Dean to the inappropriately named city for a nearfall. The Savages isolated Dean, but Dean eventually fought his way to the corner and got the tag out to Bravo.

Bravo ran wild on the Savages, hitting the Carlie Cutter on Bronson for a nearfall. Johnson and Jameson tagged in, with Johnson hitting a lifting reverse DDT for the win.

Red Velvet defeated Heather Reckless

Velvet got the quick win with a hurricane kick.

Nyla Rose was in the locker room throwing away Athena’s gear when Lexy Nair stopped her. Rose put over her accomplishments and the fact that she took out Athena a few weeks ago. Rose asserted herself as the new Minion Overlord and told both Nair and Billie Starkz to follow her lead. She told Nair to grab the camera while telling the cameraman to take her phone. She baited the cameraman onto a table before putting him through another table, then told Starkz to fall in line.

ROH Board of Directors member Jerry Lynn was with Lexy Nair. Dalton Castle came in, banging on Johnny TV’s locker room door. Lynn held Castle back as Johnny TV came out of his locker room. He did a split, then got pulled out of the frame by Taya Valkyrie. We know this because Valkyrie poked her head out and called Castle a loser. This was all quite wacky.

Cartwheel did a Space Flying Tiger Drop to the floor, but Cruz avoided a tumbleweed from the top rope and laid Cartwheel out with a lariat. Cruz proclaimed that there would be no more cartwheels, but Cartwheel took him down with a flagpole kick and a stalling elbow drop.

Cartwheel hit a Death Valley Driver and a corkscrew splash for a nearfall. Cruz ripped Cartwheel off the top rope and did a cartwheel of his own. Unfortunately, I missed the move that won the match due to the feed buffering, but Cartwheel won with some type of top rope splash.

Action Andretti defeated Anthony Henry

I don’t know who told Andretti about that water bottle spot, but they aren’t doing him favors. I sound like a broken record when it comes to both Workhorsemen, but Henry looked great here.

Henry took down Andretti with a boot, but Andretti came back with a headscissors. Andretti sent Henry to the floor, but Henry avoided a moonsault and hit an armbreaker off of the stairs. Henry worked on the arm and shoulder, benefiting as Andretti couldn’t complete an Irish Whip. Andretti hit a handspring that sent Henry to the floor before following him with a dive.

After the match, Athena drove Frost into the title belt on the mat to get the final word in.

– The Kingdom talked about their frustrations in ROH lately in a lengthy video package. Instead of getting a rematch against the Briscoes at Final Battle, they lost to Top Flight. Instead of honoring Jay Briscoe by winning the tag team titles at Supercard of Honor, four other teams got in their way and took that from them. Now, they are not going to stop until they get back at all of the teams that were in that match.

La Faccion Ingobernable (Preston Vance & Rush) (w/Jose The Assistant) defeated The Infantry (Carlie Bravo & Shawn Dean)

Vance hammered Bravo to start, drilling him with a big boot to send him down. Vance went to finish this match off quickly with the Full Nelson, but Dean cut him off after yanking Rush off of the apron. Vance took both men down with discus lariats before tagging in Rush to finish off Bravo with the Bull’s Horns for the emphatic victory.

Brian Cage (w/Prince Nana) defeated Leon Ruffin

A quality squash match here. The crowd got into Ruffin’s comeback before Cage efficiently shut him down.

Cage threw Ruffin around with ease before Ruffin fought out of a suplex with knees. Ruffin went for a top-rope crossbody, but Cage caught him and dropped him with a front slam. Cage went for an F-5, but Ruffin dropped him with a DDT. Ruffin evaded Cage and hit a cutter out of the corner for a close nearfall to a big pop. Dark Order dropped Kiss with an electric chair throw into a powerbomb, then pinned Kay after a Grayson kick led to an Uno powerbomb. Grayson and Uno confronted The Righteous on the stage before walking off.

– Christopher Daniels was in the back with Dasha Fuentes, who asked what was next on his journey to victory. Daniels said this was one of the lowest points of his career. But he was going to earn his keep in ROH, and he wouldn’t start at the bottom. He called out Samoa Joe, noting their long history with each other, and challenged him to a TV Title match next week.

Skye Blue defeated Diamante

An early pinning predicament sent Diamante scurrying to the ropes. Diamante caught Blue in the ropes and hit a neckbreaker before sending her to the floor with a baseball slide. Diamante worked over Blue before Blue fought back, hitting a crossbody off the top rope for a nearfall.

Blue hit a rising knee and a low kick that sent Diamante to the apron. They got into a forearm exchange before Diamante caught Blue with a German suplex on the apron. Lee Moriarty (w/Big Bill) defeated Rocky Romero

Moriarty’s hometown crowd got behind him in the opening moments of this match. Romero tied up Moriarty in the ropes and hit a dropkick. Big Bill menaced Romero on the outside, allowing Moriarty to knock Romero off the apron and drive him into the barricade. Moriarty tore at Romero’s arm, popping his fingers while in an armbar. They traded arm control before kicking at each other’s arms, leading to a Romero tornado DDT.

Romero drilled Moriarty with chops and the Forever Clotheslines, but Moriarty misdirected Romero and hit a clothesline of his own. Moriarty hit the Tiger Driver ’18 for a nearfall. They traded arm submissions before Romero rolled up Moriarty for a nearfall. A strike battle ended with Romero hitting the rewind kick that sent Moriarty to the floor. Romero hit a headscissors off of the steps before hitting a Sliced Bread in the ring for a nearfall.

– Rocky Romero was in the back, unhappy that Lee Moriarty outsnuck the King of Sneaky Style. He challenged Moriarty to a Pure Rules rematch next week.

Christian came back with a springboard into a handspring kick for a nearfall. Loco came back with a powerbomb for a nearfall.

Renegade laid in the shots to Nightingale in the corner before slapping her in the face. The slap fired Nightingale up as she went on the offensive, laying out Renegade with a spinebuster for a nearfall. Nightingale hit the Pounce, sending Renegade into the ropes.

As Renegade laid in the ropes, her sister Charlette Renegade tried the Killer Bees switch out spot. It only served as a distraction as Robyn Renegade went for a roll-up, but Nightingale reversed the cover to score the win. After the match, Robyn adhered to the Code of Honor, but it was only a trap as Charlette chop blocked Nightingale. The Renegades laid out Nightingale with a Hart Attack and stood tall to end the segment.

– Dasha Fuentes was backstage with Colt Cabana, who will challenge Samoa Joe for the ROH TV Title later tonight. Cabana called this the triad, as he had previously challenged Joe for both the World and Pure Titles in ROH. He didn’t know what the future held for him, but he would capitalize on tonight’s opportunity.

Lance Archer defeated Jah-C

Archer got a jump start, dragging Jah-C out to the ring with him during his entrance. Jah-C got a total of two shots in before Archer crushed him in the corner with running elbows. Archer let Jah-C try to fire up, but Archer dropped him with a reverse DDT. A short-range lariat mercifully ended this one as Archer got the win. Konosuke Takeshita defeated Lee Moriarty

This was a standout match between these two, as Takeshita sold Moriarty’s arm work well in the body of this match. I always appreciate when limb work pays off in the closing stretch of a match, and Takeshita and Moriarty made sure to link all the arm work together by the end of the match.

Takeshita and Moriarty traded arm drags before Takeshita laid out Moriarty with leg lariats. Moriarty hit some chops before Takeshita dropped him with a forearm. El Hijo del Vikingo defeated Gringo Loco

Gringo Loco talked about how he’s zig-zagged across the world trying to get Tony Khan’s attention. Loco said after the match, Khan raised his hand and invited him back to ROH anytime. Loco may not have won the match, but earning his way into ROH was just as big of a victory.

ROH World Television Title Match: Samoa Joe (c) defeated Colt Cabana

This was Samoa Joe’s ninth title defense.

Cabana used his technique to stay out of Joe’s hands, but Joe caught Cabana with a back elbow to cut him off. Joe hit the body splash and enzuigiri combination for a nearfall. Gringo Loco on the challenges of booking GCW’s The Wrld on Lucha

As is tradition, the GCW Collective is taking place during WWE WrestleMania 39 weekend in Los Angeles.

Multiple shows will be taking place at the Ukrainian Cultural Center, one of which is the second-ever The Wrld on Lucha on April 1st at 9 PM Pacific — live on FITE.tv.

I talked with Gringo Loco who is booking the event, chatting about the challenges he faces in putting the show together and what he likes about the card thus far.

In our 40-minute interview, seen above on YouTube, we talk about other topics like how he got into wrestling, being accepted, his love for lucha libre, and more.

“Anxiety always sets in”

Loco said the anxiety to put on a good show is a challenge of putting together lineups in addition to staying as authentic as possible — all because he wants the event to be good.

“I just I have nightmares of just running a really bad show. And thank God, last year was fantastic. I got nothing but great reviews afterwards.

“People still talk about it (and that it was their favorite show of the weekend. I really take that to heart because I put a lot of energy into it last year, meticulously putting the card together and the same thing with this year. I just want it to be special and you run into a lot of mental roadblocks because there’s only so many spots.”

To him, one of the most difficult parts of booking a show is handling which spots on the card go to who.

“You figure whatever the number is and you want to get all these people on and, you know, they’re going to knock it out of the park. But if you don’t have a spot for them, I think that’s the most difficult part for me so far while running a show, because not everybody can get on and everybody definitely deserves the chance.”

However, he wants to make sure to build the best card possible so the fans will want to comeback.

“I’m just trying to bring the best card possible, try to bring memories for the fans so that they’ll want to come back and then this could be like an ongoing thing for the world of lucha. But, so far so good. Last year went really well, and I think that people are loving the idea of a lucha libre promotion.”

The card

To date, several matches have been announced that include these:

Himself vs. Psycho Clown

“The rematch is going to happen from the crazy bloody match that we had in Dallas. I think you know what to expect from that one.”

El Hijo Del Vikingo vs. Laredo Kid

“So, we have a crazy match for you. It is Laredo Kid, who is just coming back from injury vs. Vikingo. And I don’t know if you’ve seen these guys work together, but they are maniacs. And I think that if you are in the building in L.A., you’re going to be seeing something very special with those two.”

Los Macizos vs. Familia de Tijuana

“All four of those guys are just crazy maniacs.”

Negro Casas vs. Tony Deppen

“A clash of styles.”

Dulce Tormenta vs. Sexy Star

“If you know anything about those two, these are two of the hardest working luchadoras that there is right now. I think they’re hard hitting and I know they’re crazy.”

Loco explained that he wanted to make sure the show presents lucha libre authentically.

“When it comes to hardcore stuff, we’re really trying to give you just a nice jumble of authentic lucha. I have had a couple of ideas thrown at me and it wasn’t exactly super authentic lucha, so I said no to them. I just want to bring lucha…and put it on a big stage.”

MLW announces four more roster members for new season

MLW has confirmed four more wrestlers who will be part of the roster for their new season.

During the second week of MLW’s “2021 Open Draft,” it was announced that indie wrestler Alex Kane has signed with MLW. It was also announced that Gringo Loco, King Mo, and “Filthy” Tom Lawlor will be returning for the new season.

Kane will be making his MLW debut when the promotion’s new season kicks off with a set of television tapings at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 10. It was stated that Kane will be representing Dan Lambert’s American Top Team in MLW, which King Mo is also a member of.

Kane’s nickname is “The Suplex Assassin.” While speaking with MLW’s Alicia Atout, Kane said he competed in amateur wrestling and rugby in college. He was trained in professional wrestling by AR Fox and made his debut in September 2018.

Kane told Atout that he wants to face MLW National Openweight Champion Alexander Hammerstone.

It was announced during the first week of the Open Draft that Davey Richards, Marshall & Ross Von Erich, Gino Medina, and King Muertes (formerly known as Mil Muertes) will be part of the roster for MLW’s new season. Richards has signed with MLW and will also be making his debut at July’s TV tapings in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia tapings will be MLW’s first event with fans in attendance since March 2020.

MLW Fusion results: National title tournament semifinal match

A Jacob Fatu vs. Barrington Hughes promo video opened up this week’s episode of MLW Fusion. Hughes is undefeated in MLW, but he has never met anyone like Contra Unit’s Fatu.

Air Wolf defeated Rey Fenix (9:48)

A surprise upset for Air Wolf as he put away one half of the former MLW Tag Team Champions. Jim Cornette told us Air Wolf wanted this more than he wanted to breathe, and Rich Bocchini said it could be a breakthrough match for Air Wolf.

It seems with All Elite Wrestling’s debut looming ever closer, MLW is looking for replacements to fill the hole the Lucha Bros will make if they leave full time.

They did chain wrestling to begin, which got the fans involved in dueling chants for both wrestlers. The tempo picked up after they traded chops, with Air Wolf being sent to the outside by an arm drag from Fenix coming off the top rope. However, Air Wolf soon sent Fenix outside himself and hit a running crossbody over the top rope to the floor.

Inside, Air Wolf hit a snap German suplex followed by a delayed version, getting a close two count. Cornette questioned if Fenix should have had a different game plan coming into this one and if he has maybe underestimated Air Wolf.

A jumping face plant/flatliner got Air Wolf another two count as he kept on top of Fenix, thwarting every comeback attempt by the Lucha Bro. They again traded chops while Fenix was on the apron. A moment of lapsed concentration gave Fenix the opening to smack Air Wolf in the face with a hard dropkick and momentarily change the momentum of the match.

With Air Wolf sitting on the middle rope, Fenix tightrope walked across the top rope and kicked him in the face. Air Wolf fought back with another suplex as the commentary team were surprised he was still in this match.

Fenix gave Air Wolf a step-up tornado kick while he was on the top rope. He then went for a Muscle Buster off the top, but Air Wolf slipped out and rolled up Fenix and got the surprise three count victory.

Fenix raised Air Wolf’s hand after the match as the commentary team played up the big win for Air Wolf.

– We then saw a graphic of a new arrival — Austin Aries is coming to MLW soon.

– Kaci Lennox was backstage with Salina de la Renta. De la Renta called out Mance Warner and Sami Callihan, saying they caused chaos last week on the show she was producing. She then challenged them to a match next week against Promociones Dorado and said she will bring the chaos to them, and the chaos will put them in the hospital.

Jacob Fatu defeated Barrington Hughes (0:30)

Cornette called this a match between a Samoan man-eater, and a man who eats everything else. This did not take long at all and sounded like there was a lot of crowd sweetening going on.

Contra Unit are on a collision course with MLW World Heavyweight champion “Filthy” Tom Lawlor, so it made sense to keep Fatu really strong heading into a potential match with the champion.

Hughes backed Fatu up in the corner with some chops and hit an avalanche. Fatu superkicked his way out of the corner, then hit a standing Hughes with a Whisper in the Wind style top rope corkscrew, which knocked Hughes down long enough for Fatu to get the three count.

– H2tv was up next. Teddy Hart thanked the Lucha Bros for handing them their MLW Tag Team titles and said he hopes they meet again in the future. He then called out MJF and called him a pansy and a momma’s boy.

Hart called Rich Swann awesome and he warned Brian Pillman Jr. about him for his National Openweight Championship semifinal match. Pillman said the Hart Foundation respects Swann, but he is not going to lie down for him. He said Teddy has a title, Davey Boy Smith Jr. has a title, and Pillman is coming to take the National title.

– Alexander Hammerstone had a recorded message for Gringo Loco. Hammerstone said he was concentrating on celebrating after he wins this National title tournament. There will be clubs, limousines, drinks, and MJF has even rented an elephant. Momma Hammer is coming, Papa Hammer is coming, Grand-papi Hammer too. Even weird Uncle Gary Hammer is flying in to celebrate. Gringo Loco isn’t putting the breaks on their celebrations.

– Ross & Marshall Von Erich have signed to MLW and will make their MLW debuts on June 1 in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

– Tom Lawlor was in his gym with a promo for Avalanche. He said he has been drowning his opponents in sweat, tears, and spit — getting filthy. The only abdominal snowman Avalanche needs to worry about is Lawlor.

Ariel Dominguez defeated Bryan Idol (4:07)

The 5’2” Dominguez was quoted as being the smallest competitor in MLW. He has been training with Lawlor — and it showed throughout this match. A guillotine choke helped him pick up a win and send him on his way up the ranks.

Idol took Dominguez out with a knee to the face and a single-leg dropkick. He suplexed him into the top turnbuckle and nearly landed on his head as he kept on the pressure. Idol got a close two count after a swinging side slam.

Dominguez rolled through a suplex, but Idol kept hold of him and hit a shoulder breaker for another two count. He then went up top and missed a big moonsault, which gave Dominguez the opening for his comeback. Dominguez fired up with a clothesline, chops, and a standing dropkick, flooring his opponent.

A suplex, roll through, and kick to the face got Dominguez a two count, but Idol got back into it with a big right hand. Dominguez fell to the apron but was able to springboard up and hit a twisting DDT. After a struggle on the mat, Dominguez was able to keep Idol locked in a guillotine choke and grab a leg long enough to pick up the win.

– Mance Warner and Sami Callihan cut a promo on Promociones Dorado and Salina de la Renta. They accepted the challenge to a tag match against Ricky Martinez & El Hijo de LA Park, but Warner said it wasn’t a tag team match, he was coming for fingers, arms, and legs.

Warner said de la Renta had stopped them beating each other up, so they are going to beat Promociones Dorado up instead. Thumbs and knee pads up…and down.

– The cameras caught up with de la Renta and Low Ki talking backstage. They argued about Ki’s contract being up for renewal. Ki was frustrated that the promoter is becoming the feature, and as de la Renta noticed the camera, she suggested they take their conversation elsewhere.

Alexander Hammerstone (w/ MJF and Richard Holliday) defeated Gringo Loco in a National Openweight Championship tournament semifinal match (4:55)

Hammerstone sent MJF and Holliday to the back before the match began. Cornette called Loco one of his guilty pleasures and an amazing athlete. He said Loco has added on muscle but it hasn’t altered his agility.

The story of the match was Hammerstone’s strength vs. Loco’s speed — and it was the strength that won in the end after a superplex and a Nightmare Pendulum to send Hammerstone into the tournament final.

Loco took the early advantage, hitting a standing moonsault and a spike headscissors takedown and knocking Hammerstone to the outside. However, Hammerstone had the dive scouted and met Loco with a kick to the face. Hammerstone then dropped Loco face-first on the apron on the outside.

Back inside, Loco fought back and hit a springboard moonsault to a standing Hammerstone for a two count. Loco used his speed to dodge an attack and hit a big back body drop. He then went up top again, but Hammerstone crotched him and joined him up in the corner.

The camera cut away on what could have been a dangerous tumble to the floor, but when we cut back Hammerstone hit a superplex off the middle rope. He then put Loco away with the Nightmare Pendulum to advance to the National Openweight Championship finals.

Hammerstone took the mic after the match and told everyone he is one win away from the National Championship. He said it didn’t matter if it was one win or 1,000 wins, he is getting it either way. Hammerstone said he is not a prospect — he has destiny and that is why he is the next National Champion.

Next week —

  • Brian Pillman Jr. vs. Rich Swann in a National Openweight Championship tournament semifinal match
  • Mance Warner & Sami Callihan vs. El Hijo de LA Park & Ricky Martinez
