Two new matches added to Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XIV

With the show fast approaching, the lineup for Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XIV continues to take shape.

Two new matches have been added to Saturday’s card with AEW/ROH wrestler Nick Comoroto making his Bloodsport debut against Simon Gotch.

The other is Timothy Thatcher taking on Slade. It will be Thatcher’s tenth match in the format (3-5-1) while it’s Slade’s second (0-1).

The show, taking place in New Jersey during SummerSlam weekend, will air live via TrillerTV+ with a start time of 1 p.m. Eastern.

Comoroto returned to the ring on AEW Dynamite this April after spending almost nine months out of action following hip surgery. Since then, he’s regularly competed on the indies. Nicknamed “Freak Beast,” he got his start in wrestling at the Monster Factory training school and was signed to WWE from 2019-2020, training at the Performance Center and competing at NXT house shows.

Gotch has a 2-5 record in the seven Bloodsport matches he’s participated in. He was formerly one half of The Vaudevillains in WWE.

Here is the updated Bloodsport lineup:

GCW Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XIV (Saturday, August 2) —

  • Nattie Neidhart vs. Masha Slamovich
  • Pete Dunne vs. Jonathan Gresham
  • Janai Kai vs. Jordan Blade
  • Timothy Thatcher vs. Slade
  • Charlie Dempsey vs. Dominic Garrini
  • Nick Comoroto vs. Simon Gotch
  • Also announced to compete: Erik, Ivar, Matt Mako

Pete Dunne match added to Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XIV

WWE wrestler Pete Dunne and free agent Jonathan Gresham are set to meet one-on-one this weekend.

Game Changer Wrestling has confirmed that Dunne vs. Gresham will take place at Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XIV in New Jersey this Saturday. The show is being held at the Williams Center in Rutherford and will air live on TrillerTV+.

Josh Barnett hyped the Dunne vs. Gresham matchup as featuring two of the best grapplers in wrestling.

“Two of Pro Wrestling’s most dangerous grapplers are set to clash at Josh Barnett’s: Bloodsport XIV,” he wrote. “Refined in skills and holds but possessing the blunt viciousness needed when skill is not enough. These two are set to tear down the house and one another.”

Dunne — who will be wrestling his first match since May — has a 1-0 Bloodsport record with a victory over Timothy Thatcher from earlier this year.

Gresham is looking for his first Bloodsport win, holding an 0-2 record at the moment with losses to Zack Sabre Jr. and Masashi Takeda.

In addition to Dunne, WWE wrestlers Natalya and Charlie Dempsey will be competing at this Bloodsport indie event. Natalya vs. TNA’s Masha Slamovich is booked for the show. An opponent for Dempsey has not been announced yet.

Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XIV (Saturday, August 2) —

  • Nattie Neidhart vs. Masha Slamovich
  • Janai Kai vs. Jordan Blade
  • Pete Dunne vs. Jonathan Gresham

Two wrestlers off GCW Japan tour due to travel issues

Game Changer Wrestling began a tour of Japan on Monday, but two wrestlers who were scheduled to be there were unable to attend.

The indie promotion announced that TNA star Masha Slamovich and mini luchador Microman could not make the trip over to Japan due to travel issues. The three-show tour began today at Shinjuku Face in Tokyo and will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday with events at Tokyo Square and Korakuen Hall.

Slamovich was the TNA Knockouts World Champion prior to recently dropping the belt to NXT’s Jacy Jayne at TNA Slammiversary. That was a title vs. title match where both the Knockouts Championship and NXT Women’s Championship were on the line.

Along with her TNA work, Slamovich is the World Champion of GCW’s sister brand Jersey Championship Wrestling. She was scheduled to defend the title against 1 Called Manders at today’s show. Instead, there was a non-title match with Manders facing Kazusada Higuchi of DDT Pro Wrestling.

Miyu Yamashita and Mao will be replacing Slamovich in her remaining matches on the tour. It will be Yamashita, Shotzi Blackheart & Dark Sheik vs. Super Crazy, Jordan Oliver & Alec Price on Tuesday, then Mao & Rina Yamashita vs. Oliver & Price on Wednesday.

Replacements for Microman’s remaining matches have not been announced yet. He’s a freelancer in Mexico and the United States and had previously worked for MLW.

The three GCW shows from this week’s Japan tour are not being broadcast live but are still airing on TrillerTV+ later in the night on the same day that they take place.

The Hardy Boyz set for GCW return

The Hardy Boyz are set to make an appearance for Game Changer Wrestling during SummerSlam weekend in New Jersey.

GCW has announced Matt & Jeff Hardy for the promotion’s Hit Em Up show on Friday, August 1. It’s stated that The Hardys will be appearing live, but there are no opponents announced or confirmation on whether Matt & Jeff will be competing.

The GCW show is being held at Williams Center in Rutherford, New Jersey and will air live on TrillerTV+.

Jeff Hardy debuted for GCW with an appearance in 2023 while his brother Matt worked a couple of dates for the indie group in 2024. Back in April of this year, the two defeated D-Von Dudley’s sons Terrell & Terrence at a For The Culture event that GCW was involved in promoting.

The Hardys will also be signing autographs and taking pictures with fans at WrestleCon’s SummerSlam weekend convention in Newark, New Jersey on August 1-2. After that, they’ll be in Maine on August 9 to wrestle for indie promotion Limitless Wrestling.

At TNA Slammiversary last night, The Hardys won a four-way ladder match to become the new TNA Tag Team Champions. There was then an angle setting up that Matt & Jeff will face The Dudley Boyz for one final time at TNA Bound for Glory this October.

GCW hosting WWE ID Showcase during SummerSlam weekend

GCW’s relationship with WWE will continue during SummerSlam weekend as the indie promotion will host a WWE ID Showcase event.

Announced by GCW on Tuesday, the show is set for Friday, August 1st at the Williams Center in Rutherford, New Jersey, part of GCW Summersmash weekend that will also feature the 14th Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport event on Saturday in the same venue.

Both shows will be held in the afternoon and will stream live on Triller+.

The event will feature Timothy Thatcher, Kylie Rae, Marcus Mathers, The Vanity Project, Jack Cartwheel, Cappuccino Jones, Ice Williams, Aaron Rourke, It’s Gal, Jordan Oasis, Aaron Roberts and others.

**********

While no matches were announced for the Showcase, both the men’s and women’s WWE ID Championship tournaments are still in progress. June saw Bryce Donovan, Williams, Cartwheel, Jones and Baylor pick up wins in the round robin tournament.

The relationship between WWE and GCW saw the latter host the kickoff to the tournament during April’s WrestleMania weekend in addition to main roster and NXT wrestlers competing on Bloodsport events.

Miyu Yamashita off GCW event due to lack of social security number

Miyu Yamashita is out of tonight’s GCW event.

Game Changer Wrestling announced on social media that the Missouri Athletic Commission is refusing to license Yamashita due to not having a social security number, taking her off tonight’s GCW Take a Picture event in St. Louis.

“Despite the fact that she has wrestled in Missouri multiple times, has all relevant & required documents and has a valid work visa, the Missouri Athletic Commision will not license Miyu Yamashita to wrestle today because she does not have a social security number,” GCW wrote on social media.

GCW owner Brett Lauderdale posted a message on social media to stress that the situation wasn’t a storyline.

“I wish this was a storyline or some creative excuse to explain that Miya couldn’t be here today but it’s not,” he wrote. “Very frustrating given that there was a set of tv tapings done in Missouri just over a month ago where nearly a dozen folks without SS #’s were allowed to perform.”

Yamashita was originally set to team with Billie Starkz against GCW Tag Team Champions YDNP. Other matches scheduled include Matt Tremont vs. 2 Tuff Tony for the GCW Ultraviolent title, Effy vs. 2 Cold Scorpio for the GCW Championship, and Masha Slamovich vs. Mickie Knuckles for the JCW Championship.

Deonna Purrazzo returning to GCW for three shows

AEW wrestler Deonna Purrazzo is returning to GCW for three shows this summer.

Game Changer Wrestling has announced that Purrazzo will be in action for the promotion on July 19, August 1, and August 2. The first show is being held in Coney Island, New York while the latter two are set for Rutherford in Purrazzo’s home state of New Jersey. Opponents for Purrazzo have not been announced yet.

All three events will air live on TrillerTV+. The New Jersey dates are happening at the same time as the state hosts WWE SummerSlam weekend.

In 2015-2016, Purrazzo competed for GCW in the early stages of the promotion. She was the last wrestler to hold GCW’s now-defunct Women’s Championship.

Purrazzo signed with AEW at the start of 2024 and is currently part of the ROH women’s division. Along with these GCW appearances, she has upcoming indie dates for Love Pro Wrestling in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (May 30) and Wrestling Revolver in Clive, Iowa (June 14).

RVD defends GCW, Joey Janela from ‘ridiculous’ criticism over Sabu’s death

Rob Van Dam doesn’t place any blame on Game Changer Wrestling for the death of his best friend Sabu.

On Thursday night, RVD and Taz did a live stream sharing their memories of Sabu following his passing. RVD also addressed the controversy that emerged this week after Joey Janela revealed that Sabu’s final match at Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9 almost didn’t happen. Sabu could barely walk because of issues with his knee and feet, but Sabu’s team gave him kratom — a federally legal substance — to help him get through the no ropes barbed wired match. Fans on social media have criticized Janela and GCW for allowing the match to still happen.

“All the heat that’s gone to Joey Janela and GCW? Ridiculous,” RVD said. “I’ve read comments from social media followers that say, ‘GCW should be arrested on manslaughter.’ Wait, regardless of the cause of death, three weeks later? Thank god these people aren’t actually in control actually making real decisions.”

Sabu died on May 11, less than a month after defeating Janela at Spring Break. A cause of death has not been released yet. RVD said that, because Sabu and his ex-wife Hitomi never got officially divorced, there is a hold-up with needing her permission for some things. She is living in Japan and doesn’t want anything to do with the situation.

RVD said Sabu using kratom for the Spring Break match had “nothing to do” with him dying three weeks later. RVD called himself an advocate for kratom, which he believes helps a lot of people with pain, sleep issues, and anxiety. He uses kratom regularly, and Sabu would use it every day.

“A lot of my friends have been able to quit taking opiates and take kratom. A lot of followers have told me and thanked me for talking about kratom because they’ve done the same thing,” RVD said. “Can you get addicted to kratom? You can get addicted to f*cking chocolate. If you’re a person that’s going to be addicted to stuff, then stay away from everything. The answer to that is, sure it’s possible. Can you take too much? Sure.”

Sabu vs. Janela was billed as Sabu’s retirement match, but Sabu felt like he still had one more match left in him after it was over. Sabu told RVD that he was interested in facing him if RVD was up for it.

“People are saying, ‘Shame on GCW for allowing a 60 year old to get in the ring and have a match like that.’ And I can tell you, he was my closest dude friend, closest person to me next to Katie Forbes right here. And I can tell you that he was 61 and he wanted that,” RVD said. “He wanted that for a long time. In fact, Joe Clarke, we’ve had him on the show before, Joe Clarke and I made my documentary on concussions called ‘Headstrong’ which is on Amazon. He had been working with Sabu for a long time, several months, on filming a documentary. Just a few weeks ago, they were over here. Sabu and I were working out in my gym and hanging out in my sauna… I can’t wait to see the footage that he has now. And of course the ending is definitely going to be a little different than they planned on. He was training. He was wanting to have this big retirement match, so much that when it got down to it, he knew that he had more in him, you know?

“One thing that he said when I saw him after his match with Joey Janela — he said, ‘I got one more match in me. If you’re still interested in doing that barbed wire match, I’m interested.’ Because I had talked to him before about being the guy that’s his last opponent, which a lot of people would think, easy, of course you’re going to do that. But he said, ‘No, that’s cheating.’ Just like he thinks two brothers wrestling each other is cheating, from his perspective, because they grew up and they know each other too well.”

RVD said he didn’t really want to do a barbed wire match, but Sabu could have possibly talked him into it if it was really going to be his retirement match.

There was some incorrect information reported about Sabu that RVD wanted to clarify. Sabu’s legal name wasn’t Terrance Brunk, it was Terry Brunk. He was born in Michigan and not New York. And Sabu was 61 years old when he died instead of 60.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help pay for Sabu’s funeral costs. Chris Jericho made a $5,000 donation today.

Joey Janela says Sabu retirement match almost didn’t happen, defends match going forward

Update:

GCW owner Brett Lauderdale released a statement defending his usage of Sabu at last month’s Spring Break event, saying he would never put someone in the ring who he thought would be a danger to themselves or others.

“Any suggestion that I or “GCW” or Joey Janela “forced” him to do this match, supplied him with substances or somehow caused his death is irresponsible, disingenous, hurtful, and false. It’s upsetting and discouraging to see people so eager to cast judgment without knowledge of the facts,” he wrote.

“I would never knowingly put someone who I believed was a danger to themselves or others in the ring and my track record shows this to be true,” he continued. “I have pulled people – in a public and painful manner – from big matches before, sometimes literal moments before a match was to begin and would do it again if I had to.

I spoke to Sabu moments before the match and he was Sabu. He was the same Sabu I had encountered in years past when I participated in his matches as a referee and later as a promoter. He was the same Sabu I met with the following day at WrestleCon, and the same Sabu that made multiple appearances on podcasts and at conventions in the weeks that followed.”

Original story:

Joey Janela is defending his match against Sabu despite it almost not happening due to Sabu’s condition.

In an interview with Yahoo Sports, Janela recounted that he almost didn’t wrestle Sabu in his no-rope barbed wire retirement match back on April 18 as Sabu wasn’t able to walk.

“What do you mean Sabu can’t walk? They said, ‘Yeah, Sabu, something with his knee — they’re locked up. He can’t walk. And his feet are bleeding. He’s not coming. Sabu’s not coming.’,” Janela recalled. “I said, ‘Sabu’s f***ed.’ So we talked to [indie wrestler] Matt Tremont, and Tremont is about to be the replacement for the match. And I feel like this is going to be the most embarrassing moment of my wrestling career. There’s 2,000 people here. This is one of the biggest Spring Breaks ever. The biggest crowd ‘Mania weekend, indie-wise. And I’m going to have to go out there and announce that Sabu, once again, no-showed. And no-showed his own retirement match.”

Janela said that Sabu’s team gave him a legal opiate called kratom that was able to get him to the show. The match proceeded as advertised with Sabu defeating Janela in a bloody, brutal match.

“We are an hour into the show and I said, ‘Just get Sabu here,’” Janela continued. “So they gave him something called kratom. You can buy it at a smoke shop or something; it’s like a legal opiate or something. They said, ‘He’s hopping on the bed, he’s hopping off the bed, and we’re going to get him to the show.’ So he shows up two hours into the show. Sabu was on a different f***ing planet. Everyone in the backstage was like, ‘What the f***? Is this match going to happen?’ And my God, did it happen.”

Responding to criticism on social media following the article’s release, Janela reiterated that Sabu’s team gave him the drug, not GCW, and he did his best to take care of him during the match, despite spots where Sabu slipped and fell out of the ring while running into the barbed wire.

“We didn’t give him kratom his team did, it’s also not illegal and 85% of professional wrestlers do it especially the ones on tv,” he wrote. “So f***  you. Sabu was a grown man, he did what he had to do to get out there. I took care of him to the best of my ability, I didn’t think what happened half way through would happen, it was all to get him one great payday and one last shine in the spotlight. That night wasn’t about me, it was about sabu and I wouldn’t change a thing.”

It was announced on Sunday that Sabu had passed away at the age of 60. Tributes across the wrestling world have been pouring out since, including from top companies such as WWE, AEW, TNA, and New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Joey Janela announces changes to ‘Senior Scramble’ lineup for Spring Break

A couple of changes have been made to the lineup for the first-ever “Senior Scramble” match at Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9.

Janela announced today that Doug Gilbert and Tommy Rich have both withdrawn from the scramble match and are being replaced by Robert Gibson and luchador Damian 666. The six-person bout will now be Ricky Morton vs. George South vs. The Warlord vs. Mike Jackson vs. Gibson vs. Damian 666.

“Doug Gilbert & Tommy Rich will be drinking Mikes hard lemonade in Myrtle beach instead haha,” Janela tweeted. “Replacing them in the Senior Scramble are Robert Gibson and Damian 666!”

Per the rules of the match, all competitors must be at least 55 years old. Gibson is 66 years old while Damian is 63.

Gibson’s addition means that both members of The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Morton & Gibson) are now competing in this scramble.

WWE

  • Intercontinental Champion Bron Breakker told CBS Sports that he has his eyes on challenging for the World Heavyweight Championship at some point in the not too distant future:
    • It’s hard to predict where I’ll be at the end or middle of this year, but I think we need to be talking about the world heavyweight championship at some point. Whether it’s Gunther, Jey Uso, or whoever… As I continue to rise and move in the right direction, it’s only going to be so long before I’m up there too.
  • On Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Kevin Owens discussed getting approval to finally do the package piledriver in WWE:
    • Well, the package piledriver was something I’ve asked many times before, and it was always, ‘No, not right now, not today, doesn’t work, can’t do it.’ Until eventually it was, ‘Yeah, okay, let’s do it.’ I didn’t feel like hitting it on Randy [Orton] was the best decision. I thought a normal piledriver was enough for Randy, because Randy is gigantic and quite frankly I didn’t think I could get him up for the package piledriver, because of the way his body needs to be. He’s just too massive. But yeah, and then Cody at Saturday Night’s Main Event was the right time to do it. It was cool. I waited a long time to get to do that in WWE. And the funny part is I knew Penta was coming, and Penta was doing [the] package piledriver and I was like, he better not get to do it before me, because I will lose my sh*t. But it all worked out.

Lou Nixon still being paid for pulled Bloodsport XIII booking

Indie wrestler Lou Nixon shared a positive update last night after being pulled from his scheduled booking at Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XIII.

Calling it the “worst news imaginable,” Nixon posted a statement Wednesday afternoon announcing that he’s lost his spot on the Las Vegas Bloodsport event due to too many matches being booked. Nixon said he understands it’s business, but he felt like his heart has been ripped out and did not know what would be next for him in pro wrestling.

He then gave an update last night saying that, while he’s still disappointed he won’t be wrestling at Bloodsport, Josh Barnett and Game Changer Wrestling have handled the miscommunication professionally. Nixon is still being paid for the booking and will be back for another Bloodsport show in the near future.

“First of all thanks for the support and kind messages, really felt the love today, don’t worry I’m not going anywhere,” Nixon wrote. “Josh contacted me as soon as he was made aware of the situation, unfortunately there was miscommunication with the booking which has led to this error. Even though I’m still gutted I won’t be on this show, I’d like to thank Josh & GCW for handling this situation like true professionals, reaching out to clear things up and still paying me for the booking.

“And after the conversation we had, I can assure you all I’ll be back on Bloodsport in the near future.”

Barnett said he was not aware of the situation but reached out once he found out.

“Lou is a homie of ours and as soon as I was made aware, I went to him directly, handled it, and made sure our guy was good,” Barnett tweeted. “One show is one show, but we have plans with Lou and I always have him on the shortlist.”

Nixon is from the United Kingdom and goes by “Big” Lou Nixon. He wrestled for Bloodsport twice in 2024, losing against Erik Hammer and defeating Calvin Tankman. Nixon will be one of the entrants in the Clusterf*ck match that GCW and Joey Janela are presenting in Vegas on Saturday, April 19.

Bloodsport XIII is taking place next Thursday (April 17) and will air live on TrillerTV+. The updated card for the show can be seen here.

Barbed wire stipulation added to Sabu’s retirement match

ECW legend Sabu is going out in style in his retirement match at Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9.

The final match of Sabu’s career will take place on Friday, April 18 when he faces Joey Janela at GCW’s Spring Break event in Las Vegas. A hardcore stipulation has now been added to the bout with Janela announcing that it will be a no ropes barbed wire match.

Janela made the announcement during a promo at Sunday’s GCW show in Philadelphia.

“A lot of people know what this is, but not a lot of people know what this feels like. I know what this feels like. Sabu knows what this feels like. And in 12 days, we’re going to know what it feels like again,” Janela said after unveiling strands of barbed wire. “I will put on the performance of my career when we take these ropes down, when we take these f*cking ropes down and we don’t replace them with chains or anything like that. We replace them with real, sharp, life-threatening barbed wire.”

Sabu, 60, has been away from the ring since 2021 but is now returning for one last match. There was an angle last month where the former ECW World Champion bloodied Janela at a GCW event.

Spring Break is being held at the Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms Casino Resort in Vegas and will air live on TrillerTV+ with a start time of 10 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Pacific.
