Charlotte Flair on retirement: ‘I’m gonna quit when I want to quit’

Just days after her 40th birthday, WWE veteran Charlotte Flair has opened up about retirement talks.

Speaking to Katie Nolan on Casuals, Charlotte Flair was asked when she might start thinking about hanging up her boots. However, confident and determined, Flair opened up and dismissed the idea of a retirement in the near future.

None of that. It’s unfortunate that those sentences happen because I feel like in our industry, men don’t reach their prime until 40. I started late. I didn’t win my first title until I was 30. Where the girls are now, which is awesome, a lot of people are in their younger 20s,” Flair said.

“But I graduated, had the awkward 20s of not knowing what to do, and then wrestling came later in life. But saying that the men don’t hit their prime until 40, why am I not hitting my prime now? I think it would be easier for people to label me in that box, but I’m not gonna let anyone put me in that box. And I hope women in any profession who are about to turn 40 don’t think that is a slowdown or an endgame.

Now, 40-year-old Flair is far from calling it over on her despite the rise and emergence of WWE’s younger generation.

But if anything, whatever industry that you’re in and sport like Lindsey Vonn did, it’s whatever you are capable of and are willing to do and put in the time. I’m very fortunate. I started out on top, so it might seem like my career is longer, but I just have had the opportunity to be at the top of the game. And now I’m not gonna say sorry anymore for winning. I’m not gonna age out of my career. I’m gonna quit when I want to quit,” she concluded.

Ric Flair’s daughter, Flair, has also made a name for herself on the WWE roster. Arguably one of the most popular names in the women’s division, she is also a 14-time World Champion, which is just a couple of reigns behind her father’s record.

She is now scheduled to tag with Alexa Bliss and compete in a potential 4-way women’s tag team championship match at WWE WrestleMania 42.

Charlotte Flair says WWE Unreal ‘did wonders’ for her

Charlotte Flair expressed her satisfaction with the outcome of WWE Unreal on her connection with fans.

Speaking on Unsportsmanlike with Evan, Canty and Michelle, Flair discussed the influence of the docuseries on how fans perceived her. She highlighted the comparisons to earlier days when wrestlers avoided being spotted in public together to keep up the authenticity of their in-ring feuds. Flair believes the series was a key component in reinforcing how fans viewed her as a face after nine years as a heel.

“Every business needs to evolve and we’re here to sell conflict. The older generation, everyone lived in gimmick. Either you play the good guy or the bad guy. You weren’t traveling with the person you were in a feud with. Now, you can see me and whoever I’m wrestling at the gym the next day. We know it’s scripted. For me, Unreal did so much in terms of the fans being able to connect with the person and not just the character. I played my character so well that they believed that I was that bad guy for the last nine years. For me, it did wonders. Everything has to evolve. If you’re really good at your job, it shouldn’t be an issue.”

Flair paired up with Alexa Bliss last year and won the Women’s Tag Team Titles at SummerSlam. Despite losing the titles after a nearly 100-day reign, they continue to stand out as top contenders in the women’s division. For WrestleMania 42 they earned another opportunity to reclaim the tag team titles.

Charlotte Flair praises WWE women’s tag division, names dream singles opponents

Charlotte Flair feels like she and Alexa Bliss have been able to make a difference in the WWE women’s tag team division.

At WrestleMania 42, the Women’s Tag Team titles will be on the line when current champs Nia Jax & Lash Legend defend against Flair & Bliss, The Bella Twins, and Bayley & Lyra Valkyria. Ahead of that, Flair appeared on Busted Open Radio this morning and discussed her involvement in the tag title picture. Flair believes the division is “stacked” at the moment with so many incredible women involved.

“When I won the titles with Lexi in August [at] SummerSlam, it really did feel like I was holding up a World title,” Flair said. “Given the scenario last year when I came back and losing at WrestleMania last year and then out of nowhere — no one had that [teaming with Bliss] on their bingo card. And I don’t know what I would have been doing had the opportunity not come up.

“So I do take the match for the tag titles very serious, because I do feel like what Lexi and I have been able to create together has made a difference. And saying that, there has been — when Lexi and I were going to Raw and facing Bayley & Lyra or IYO & Rhea, there’s been some incredible women revolving around the tag titles. I don’t know if there’s been that much competition — there’s always been competition but that stacked tag team division that there is now. And that says a lot.”

Before Flair & Bliss were paired together, Flair didn’t know if WWE had any creative plans for her. She wasn’t sure if she would even be featured on SummerSlam 2025 — but she ended up winning the Women’s Tag Team titles with Bliss at the PLE. It took place at the same venue (MetLife Stadium in New Jersey) where Flair main evented WrestleMania 35 alongside Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey.

Flair told Busted Open that the knee injury she suffered in December 2023 has helped her become more grateful and appreciate every moment. She’s having a lot of fun in the tag division and wants that to carry over whenever she shifts her focus back to going after singles gold.

When asked about potential dream opponents, Flair named Jade Cargill, Stephanie Vaquer, and this new version of Liv Morgan that she’s never faced before. Flair also believes that she and Rhea Ripley have unfinished business. With a 1-1 record against each other at WrestleMania so far, Flair wants to finish that trilogy.

Charlotte Flair names the Four Horsewomen as her Mount Rushmore

Charlotte Flair considers WWE’s Four Horsewomen her Mount Rushmore of wrestlers.

Flair was part of the group during her NXT tenure. On Episode 4 of the Complex Graps Wrestling Podcast, Flair cited that without the Four Horsewomen she would not have the same passion for wrestling. They inspired each other to level up their game in the ring.

“I always say the Four Horsewomen just because they’re who and why I fell in love with wrestling. Not that I didn’t respect or love or look up to the women before me, had I not, we all have kind of gone our separate paths, but had I not been with that core when I started, I don’t know where I’d be today. They’re the reason why I fell in love with wrestling, got good at wrestling, and we all took it to the next level together. So, that’s my four.”

The Four Horsewomen of NXT comprised of Flair, Bayley, Becky Lynch and Mercedes Mone (fka Sasha Banks in WWE). Their time on NXT led to the evolution of the women’s division on the main roster by 2015.

Flair talked about the rushed tag team with Alexa Bliss on SmackDown last year. She cited the transition from a singles competitor to a tag team did not budge her stance on wrestling.

“It’s not that I never thought it would be successful, but I mean I like wrestling. I like being in there. I like being in there the whole time and I like being able, you know, to dance with my opponent. So, in any tag team situation that I’ve been in since I started, not that it hasn’t gelled, but it hasn’t been like I maybe, I mean it didn’t have the chemistry or it wasn’t given the time to get the chemistry or whatever that looks like. But with Lexi, it just seems like one of those, you know, the best things are the ones that you don’t plan. And this wasn’t planned and it was out of nowhere. So, I think that’s why it’s doing so well.”

Flair and Bliss’unlikely pairing happened last year despite their contrasting personalities. The duo won the Women’s Tag Team Titles at SummerSlam 2025. However, this was not Flair’s first time winning tag team gold. In 2020, she won the title with Asuka.

Barring Mone, who is signed to AEW, the other three ‘horsewomen’ remaining in WWE are vying for gold this WrestleMania.

Bliss & Flair and Bayley’s tag team with Lyra Valkyria are headed for a potential tag team bout. Meanwhile, Lynch’s mindgames were successful to get AJ Lee to issue a rematch for the Women’s Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania 42.

Jade Cargill names Charlotte Flair as her ‘dream opponent’

Jade Cargill has Charlotte Flair on her radar after checking Rhea Ripley off her list of dream opponents.

On Complex Grabs The Podcast, Cargill was asked about the fantasy match bookings fans were conjuring up after WWE announced her signing with the company in 2023. In the interview, she also discussed who was the dream opponent she expected to face on a stage like WrestleMania out of Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair.

“Of course, she’s the top girl. She’s the number one girl in our company currently. You know, she’s placed at such a high position and I’m going to reach the top, the highest of heights within this company. I mean, in what five years now, I have a title. I’ve been a champion three times over. I never worked the indie scene. I’ve been blessed to create such splash and to be the type.”

“So, yes, she was one of my opponents. I mean, one of the dream matches I wanted to have amongst others like Charlotte Flair. And I thought that’s actually the opponent I thought I was going to face at Mania was the likes of Charlotte Flair. You know, we’ve been teasing it for so long. And I think that’s a money-making match. I mean, she’s a Queen of home, right? And I am as well. And I think we have such similar aesthetics sometimes that I think it’s more of a like who’s who? Like who’s really like that Queen or whatever you want to say. I didn’t really dream book Rhea as being the person I would have had my ‘Mania match with this year.”

Cargill’s answer remained the same when questioned on feuds for the second half of the year particularly if Bianca Belair and Naomi made their returns. She reiterated Flair still being the No.1 dream opponent noting that SummerSlam would be the perfect stage for it to happen.

“Well, when I retain, we’re gonna, yeah, assuming that in the air. I think well I would love to go on to face Charlotte at SummerSlam, but if Bianca returns, I don’t know what ‘cause the way the big three kind of split up was, like it was like a missing piece.”

“So, I think it’s a storyline we need to embark on when everybody’s healthy and ready to go. I think everybody will want to see that story line. it’s so many avenues you can go with that storyline, right? But the person I would want to see at SummerSlam since I’m not seeing them at Mania will be Charlotte. It’s already there.”

Cargill gave further backing on her reason for choosing Flair.

“It’s about breaking her. She’s stoic. Like I’m stoic, but she’s very like, you know, so I think it’ll be a great match. And I know Charlotte’s a woman for pulling people up and making them better. And that’s the people I want to work with.

Earlier this month, a social media encounter began when Ripley posted a throwback of her championship matches at WrestleMania over the past six years. Cargill took notice and responded by calling her a “second option.”

Ripley instantly clapped back by sharing throwback interviews of Cargill labeling her a “dream opponent.” As the back-and-forth continued, Ripley claimed that all Cargill did was talk. Eventually, Ripley showed up to the March 6 edition of SmackDown to confront the champion and set up their title match for WrestleMania 42.

Charlotte Flair reveals her post-WWE plans

A WWE veteran, Charlotte Flair, recently opened up about her post-WWE plans, where she emphasized helping people out.

A part of WWE since 2012, Flair, 39, recently spoke to Bloomberg Talks, where she opened up in detail about helping people out following her WWE career.

I don’t know what my next step is after WWE, but what I do know is I want to help people. That’s why I invested in them because I know you can’t go wrong and helping create a safe space for people,” Flair said. “I want to become the person that I needed growing up, and I felt like investing in self-care for everyone was like the perfect step in that and being their angel investor.”

Recovered from a concerning injury last year, Flair returned at the 2025 Royal Rumble, which she proceeded to win and face Tiffany Stratton at WrestleMania 41. Following this, she began a tag-team run with Alexa Bliss.

Flair and Bliss recently defeated Giulia & Kiana James on SmackDown to become the number one contenders to new Women’s Tag Team Champions Nia Jax & Lash Legend.

Charlotte Flair thinks poor mental health contributed to past WWE knee injury

Charlotte Flair believes poor mental health contributed to the knee injury she suffered in December 2023.

Flair suffered a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus on the December 8, 2023 episode of SmackDown and ended up being sidelined for more than a year. The injury occurred at a time when Flair wasn’t in a great place mentally, and she feels like it could have been avoided if she was in a better headspace.

“I definitely think when I hurt my knee — I tore my ACL — I don’t think I was in the right state of mind, meaning whether it was imposter syndrome, that dialogue [of] how we talk to ourselves, that inner self-talk. I feel like I was in a very negative space and not opening up about it and the anxiety of, you know, being a woman that’s approaching 40, what that looks like, the demands. I want to be able to say, ‘I’m a woman and what I want more of is time.’ And all that pressure adding up, I feel like the reason I hurt my knee is because I wasn’t all there performing,” Flair told Bloomberg Talks.

“And for someone who has — I always looked at myself as the iron woman, and when my knee took me out, I was like, all I viewed myself was as a professional wrestler. Like, that’s all I am. And that’s not all I am. And I do have a voice and maybe this is the start of something bigger for me. Like, I love being Charlotte, but taking Charlotte to the next level and making these conversations more accessible or not taboo for people in any kind of industry, I think is so important.”

Focusing on self-care and mental wellness has now become a priority for Flair. She’s become an investor in the apparel company Self-Care is for Everyone, which produces clothing with positive messages and promotes self-care tools.

Flair and her tag team partner Alexa Bliss defeated Giulia & Kiana James on SmackDown last Friday to become the number one contenders to new Women’s Tag Team Champions Nia Jax & Lash Legend.

Two new number one contenders crowned on WWE SmackDown

The number one contenders for both the WWE and Women’s Tag Team titles were determined on SmackDown.

After Giulia & Kiana James and Alexa Bliss & Charlotte both came out on Friday to confront new champions the Irresistible Forces (Nia Jax & Lash Legend), Nick Aldis arrived and made an impromptu number one contender’s match between the first two teams. Flair and Bliss emerged victorious after Flair hit the natural selection on Giulia, giving them the next shot against Jax and Legend.

The Irresistible Forces defeated Rhea Ripley and IYO SKY on last week’s SmackDown to win the titles for the first time as a team. During their celebration backstage, they announced that they would have an additional celebration on this week’s show.

For the men, Damian Priest and R-Truth emerged as the new number one contenders for the titles, winning a Tag Team Turmoil match. The Motor City Machine Guns were first eliminated by Fraxiom, who then were eliminated by Los Garza. The Wyatt Sicks were in next, but shockingly lost after Tama Tonga interrupted the match, allowing Berto to roll up Dexter Lumis for the win. Finally Priest & Truth entered and scored the victory over Los Garza to become the new number one contenders, earning a future title match against the MFTs.

Elimination Chamber qualifying matches booked for next week’s WWE SmackDown

Two more Elimination Chamber qualifiers are set for next week’s SmackDown.

Next Friday’s show in Ft. Lauderdale will see Carmelo Hayes take on former friend Trick Williams and Damien Priest in a men’s Elimination Chamber qualifying match. Meanwhile, Nia Jax will battle Charlotte Flair and Kiana James in a women’s Elimination Chamber qualifier.

On this week’s show, Alexa Bliss qualified for the chamber after defeating Giulia and Zelina in a three-way match. Cody Rhodes also emerged victorious in his qualifying match, pinning Sami Zayn despites copious amounts of interference from Drew McIntyre, who attacked both Rhodes and Jacob Fatu in an attempt to prevent both from qualifying.

Another match set for next week is Oba Femi taking on Kit Wilson. Aldis was looking to recruit Femi to the brand when Wilson inadvertently walked into his office with a poem. Aldis took his poem and read it out loud, which had unflattering insults aimed towards Femi.

Here is the lineup for next week’s show, which will continue to air on SyFy in the United States due to Winter Olympics coverage:

WWE SmackDown (February 20)

  • Elimination Chamber qualifying match: Carmelo Hayes vs. Trick Williams vs. Damian Priest
  • Elimination Chamber qualifying match: Nia Jax vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Kiana James
  • Oba Femi vs. Kit Wilson

Nia Jax reflects on infamous WWE match against Charlotte Flair

While appearing on a new episode of Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Nia Jax detailed what went down in her infamous August 2021 match against Charlotte Flair.

The match, which took place on the August 30, 2021 episode of WWE Raw, is notable for how Jax and Flair became frustrated with one another and briefly exchanged real strikes. Jax noted on Insight that things got “heated” after a miscommunication, but they were quickly able to calm themselves down backstage.

“My match with Charlotte, where we kind of got into a little tiff, a little back and forth there. You know, it was a miscommunication. I will say I’m going to call it a miscommunication,” Jax said. “Things got heated, like legit got heated in that match. And I did warn her a few times to stop, like to chill out. And she didn’t. And so then I two-pieced her.

“And, you know, we came back and once we were calm and we were level-headed, we all kind of were just like, ‘All right, got kind of out of hand.’ But sometimes it happens. But yeah, it just got a little out of hand. It got hot and we just started swinging.”

Van Vliet asked if things are good between Jax and Flair now.

“Oh, yeah. We’re good,” Jax responded. “But it was definitely, everybody was like, ‘What just happened?’ Even the crowd, because when it happened in the moment, I couldn’t hear anything because I was angry. Like, I was legit pissed. So I didn’t hear anything. But then when I felt the dead silence of the crowd, like I think the crowd was kind of like, ‘Is this really happening?’ And I could hear Corey Graves. Commentary is the only thing I could hear because that crowd was dead silent, because I think they were kind of in shock, like, ‘What just happened?’ So, yeah, it was definitely a moment. So that was a match [where] I’m like, ‘Oh.’ But then we were able to redeem ourselves after that.”

In November 2021, Jax was released by WWE in a round of roster cuts. She has now been back with the company since 2023. When asked about future matchups she wants to have, Jax told Van Vliet that she’d like to face Raquel Rodriguez in a big “hoss match.”

Jade Cargill names her WWE dream opponent

Jade Cargill can’t wait until she gets to stand across the ring from Charlotte Flair one day.

More than two years after signing with WWE, Cargill is still waiting to face Flair for the first time. It’s a matchup that Cargill really wants to happen — and she’s sure they’ll deliver in the ring when they do meet.

“Charlotte Flair. I love Charlotte Flair,” Cargill responded when the Beyond The Bell Podcast asked who her dream opponent is. “I think she and I will have an amazing match. And one thing I know that Charlotte does is, she pulls whomever up that she works with or she tries her best to do that. And she wants to do nothing but represent and elevate the women’s division. And I want to do the same exact thing. So that’s one woman I want to work with for sure.

“I mean, it’s Charlotte Flair. I really want to work with Charlotte Flair. And she has this persona that’s beyond herself as well, so I would love to go toe-to-toe with Charlotte Flair. She’s the ‘Top Girl,’ I’m the ‘It Girl.’ Like, I would love that.”

Cargill is more than 80 days into her WWE Women’s Championship reign but has yet to have a televised title defense. She won the belt from Tiffany Stratton on WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in November.

While Flair is on SmackDown like Cargill, her focus has been on competing in the women’s tag team division with partner Alexa Bliss.

The title picture heading into WrestleMania 42 will become clearer when Royal Rumble 2026 takes place at the end of this month. The women’s Rumble winner earns the right to challenge for either the WWE Women’s Championship or Women’s World Championship (currently held by Stephanie Vaquer) at WrestleMania.

Updates on Rey Mysterio, Charlotte Flair after missing WWE TV

Rey Mysterio and Charlotte Flair both missed episodes of WWE programming over the past week but are expected to be back on TV soon.

In the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer notes that a minor injury kept Mysterio off the most recent episode of Raw, while Flair missed SmackDown due to an illness. Neither is expected to be a long-term issue, with Charlotte having already returned at a house show.

“Rey Mysterio missed Raw this week due to a minor injury but he’ll be back quickly,” Meltzer wrote.

“Flair missed Smackdown this week and was said on television to be sick. That was legit. It was described to us as she was very ill this past week which led to a change in television. She did return to the tour on January 15.”

Meltzer also added that Chad Gable (shoulder) and Tiffany Stratton (undisclosed injury) should be returning soon.

WWE is in London for SmackDown today and will continue with the European tour through January 20. After that, the company heads to Canada for SmackDown, Raw, and Saturday Night’s Main Event before its trip to Saudi Arabia for the Royal Rumble on January 31.

Charlotte Flair still hoping to ‘cross over’ into Hollywood

Crossing over from WWE to Hollywood is still a goal for Charlotte Flair.

In 2024, Flair filmed a role in the yet-to-be-released horror movie “You Lose, You Die.” Being part of the project was fun, but Flair has not gotten any other film roles since.

“I’m still waiting [for more roles],” she said in a new interview with Clutch Points. “I hope to one day cross over.”

Playing a superhero or villain would be a dream role for Flair, but she would be open to anything that would allow her to explore her creativity.

“I’m just as drawn to romantic comedies, drama, and anything that lets me stretch creatively,” Flair said. “I’m not ruling out any role. I love exploring new characters and worlds.”

Though WWE is a form of acting, Flair told Clutch Points that the process is much different than acting in film or TV. In wrestling, you play the same character over a long time period without switching things up much. The crowd reacting to you in real time also provides a form of instant gratification that does not exist elsewhere.

“There’s a lot of different cuts and takes [in acting], and you’re not in front of an audience, so you don’t have that instant gratification,” she said. “It’s very different, but I enjoy both in different ways.”

Flair has gotten to adapt her WWE character a bit over the past year, playing a babyface in a tag team with Alexa Bliss. Flair — who has usually been a heel — told Clutch Points that learning to be vulnerable and admitting that she has flaws spurred a lot of personal growth in 2025.

“I think for so long, I focused on just being perfect, when really, it’s your flaws that make you special,” she said. “Open up and being vulnerable, writing the Players’ Tribune piece and being open about that journey, I think I’ve really connected with fans on a level I never had before.”

Andrade addresses whether divorce from Charlotte Flair led to WWE exit

Andrade addressed his divorce from Charlotte Flair and speculation surrounding his departure from WWE during a recent interview.

Flair and Andrade married in May 2022, with their divorce finalized a little over two years later. Speaking on The Ring, Andrade said he was responsible for the marriage ending and emphasized that it had nothing to do with his WWE exit.

“When I returned to WWE, they treated me well. I have nothing bad to say. Triple H always treated me well. Everyone received me well,” Andrade said (translated).

He continued to say that the couple’s problems began when Flair was out injured.

“And then she got injured. After that we started having some problems, and then the divorce came.”

“A lot of people ask whether she had anything to do with me leaving WWE. It had nothing to do with that, nothing at all. Not that she talked to the company or said ‘fire him’ or anything like that.”

“I respect her. She was an incredible woman. She was a great wife. I wish her the best.”

“I admit it, as a person and as a man, I was the one who failed in the relationship. I can’t speak badly about her. She’s an incredible woman and I wish her the best.”

Earlier this month, Andrade said in another interview that original plans following WWE’s purchase of AAA would have seen him compete in a four-way match against El Hijo del Vikingo, Rey Fenix, and Oba Femi on the first Worlds Collide show in Los Angeles this summer. However, in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that the match Andrade referenced was not something the company was seriously considering.

Meltzer wrote:

“When we asked, we were told that the match Andrade talked about was never considered or talked about. I mean, you can’t necessarily take Andrade at his word, of course, but he was actually specific and perhaps it was broached to him by one person without the key people knowing. But, we can confirm it was never a serious thought.”

Andrade’s comments about his divorce from Flair and WWE departure begin around the 48:30 mark of the video below (cued):

Charlotte Flair honored to help blaze ‘new territory’ for women in WWE

Charlotte Flair is proud to be part of a new evolution of women’s athletes thriving in their late 30s and into their 40s.

The 39-year-old Flair has been outspoken about feeling there is a double standard applied to male and female athletes regarding age. She used to stress about age but is now comfortable saying she does not have any kind of “prime.” Flair told the Trading Secrets podcast that she believes she is doing some of the best character work of her WWE career right now. Her tag team with Alexa Bliss — starting out as frenemies and growing closer along the way — has been well-received by fans with Flair and Bliss both having fun in their roles.

“I’m 39, I feel like I’m having some of the best character work in my career, great matches. Who’s to say? I just think that the women that I came up with because there has been so much, so much evolution within the women’s division, it’s kind of new territory,” Flair said. “And I’m honored to be a part of that new territory for women going into their 40s. It’s just new territory.”

Flair told Trading Secrets that her pairing with Bliss has brought about a “softness” in her both on screen and off. Their team came about organically, which Flair believes is often how the storylines that resonate best with fans start out. It was Bliss who first pitched the idea for their team during a discussion with WWE creative.

This babyface run has been fun for Flair because of how effortless and natural her team with Bliss feels. Whenever she does turn heel again in the future, Flair hopes it will be extra meaningful.

“I hope just all of this opportunity with her and wherever that story goes, when I do get to go back to being like the solo evil queen, that it just means that much more because I had the opportunity to do this,” she said.

Flair & Bliss were the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions before dropping the titles last month to Asuka & Kairi Sane. They are now on a mission to win the titles back.
