WWE will never care about their tag team divisions | Opinion

Don’t expect WWE to ever care about tag teams.

A report from False Finish this week indicates that WWE is looking to rebuild their tag team division after many either left or were cut in the last month. That’s good, as the tag team divisions right now on both brands are nothing much to talk about right now. But the company has such a terrible track record with tag teams dating back to the turn of the century, should we really expect things to be better this time around?

The peak era of tag team wrestling in WWE was around 2000, with the likes of Edge & Christian, The Dudley Boyz, and The Hardy Boyz keeping the division hot. But after the brand split, tag teams pretty much fell to the wayside. Any new teams were either treated like comedy acts or would always be fodder for the main event stars. In fact, the only time the titles ever meant much was when WWE put them on top stars to further a singles feud. The emphasis would always be on the stars but never the titles, which were just props for the eventual big singles match. If there is one trope WWE has put out time and time again, it’s the infamous “but can they get along??” storyline.

I thought maybe things would change once Triple H took charge of creative in 2022. After all, AEW has outclassed WWE time and time again with tag team wrestling, and surely they weren’t about to let the gap widen, right? Well, recent events seem to indicate WWE’s malaise toward tag team wrestling is an inherent problem within the company. On Raw, The Judgment Day held those titles for a long, long time without a title defense, so much so that it actually became a storyline on television. The Vision currently hold the titles but the only other babyface team besides The Usos right now are The Street Profits, who are already teasing a split after returning just one month ago. Stacked division!

On SmackDown the scene is somehow worse. Most of last year had a bunch of teams trading wins and losses with no real direction. Fraxiom, Motor City Machine Guns, and DIY all constantly fought but somehow managed to go nowhere at the same time. They were pushed aside for the MFTs and the Wyatts, who traded the titles back and forth until mostly everyone involved got cut. Now the titles are around the waists of R-Truth and Damian Priest, a thrown-together team that hardly suggests a serious rebuild. And with the division cleared out, the only other team feuding with them is The Miz & Kit Wilson, who should hardly be taken seriously.

Who are they going to bring in to rebuild? They just cut the Motor City Machine Guns, who are still one of the best tag teams in professional wrestling. What sense does that make? It doesn’t seem reassuring either that one of the teams being bandied about for a potential return are Enzo and Cass, which I am not exactly clamoring for. Cass has potential as a singles wrestler and actually has built a far bigger and better resume than he ever did teaming with Enzo.

Could WWE really make a serious effort to rebuild their tag team division? Sure, anything is possible. But history shows that whenever WWE emphasizes rebuilding the division, the feeling rarely lasts before falling back to their same, familiar tropes. I would like to see a healthy tag team division on both brands, and there’s a wealth of talent out there in WWE and NXT to make it happen. But it’s up to the company itself to prove that this time they mean business.

Title match added to updated WWE SmackDown lineup

Solo Sikoa and Tama Tonga are set to defend their WWE Tag Team Championship on the upcoming episode of WWE SmackDown.

Earlier this month, Damian Priest and R-Truth won the Tag Team turmoil match to crown themselves the number one contenders for the WWE Tag Team titles.

With already a star-studded March 20 SmackDown scheduled, General Manager Nick Aldis recently announced that Sikoa and Tonga will now defend their titles against the number one contenders Priest and R-Truth.

The upcoming blue brand episode will also feature a Women’s Tag Team titles match between Nia Jax & Lash Legend against The Bella Twins.

Two new number one contenders crowned on WWE SmackDown

The number one contenders for both the WWE and Women’s Tag Team titles were determined on SmackDown.

After Giulia & Kiana James and Alexa Bliss & Charlotte both came out on Friday to confront new champions the Irresistible Forces (Nia Jax & Lash Legend), Nick Aldis arrived and made an impromptu number one contender’s match between the first two teams. Flair and Bliss emerged victorious after Flair hit the natural selection on Giulia, giving them the next shot against Jax and Legend.

The Irresistible Forces defeated Rhea Ripley and IYO SKY on last week’s SmackDown to win the titles for the first time as a team. During their celebration backstage, they announced that they would have an additional celebration on this week’s show.

For the men, Damian Priest and R-Truth emerged as the new number one contenders for the titles, winning a Tag Team Turmoil match. The Motor City Machine Guns were first eliminated by Fraxiom, who then were eliminated by Los Garza. The Wyatt Sicks were in next, but shockingly lost after Tama Tonga interrupted the match, allowing Berto to roll up Dexter Lumis for the win. Finally Priest & Truth entered and scored the victory over Los Garza to become the new number one contenders, earning a future title match against the MFTs.

Tag Team title match official for WWE Clash in Paris

The following are spoilers for tonight’s WWE SmackDown, currently airing live on Netflix and at 8 PM on USA in the U.S.

The next challengers to WWE Tag Team Champions The Wyatt Sicks were made on Friday’s WWE SmackDown as The Street Profits are up next.

Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins picked up the win over Melo Don’t Miz in Lyon, France, with the title match now official for Sunday’s Clash in Paris premium live event.

The end came when Ford and Dawkins hit The Revelation on Carmelo Hayes to pick up the win after The Miz was distracted by the Sicks who came out to intimidate him.

Ford and Dawkins are looking for their third Tag Team title reign and first since this past July when they lost the titles to Joe Gacy and Dexter Lumis. Gacy and Lumis have two title defenses since that win.

New WWE Tag Team Champions crowned on SmackDown

New WWE Tag Team Champions have been crowned.

Dexter Lumis and Joe Gacy of The Wyatt Sicks defeated Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins of The Street Profits on Friday’s show to win the WWE Tag Team Championship.

The victory for the Wyatt Sicks duo came after interference from their stablemate Erick Rowan. The interference spot led to Dawkins being waylaid at ringside, and a distraction from Gacy forced Ford to miss his signature frog splash and ultimately led to the title change.

Both Gacy and Lumis racked up their first WWE career title win of any kind in the victory. Gacy made his WWE television debut on 205 Live in July 2021. Lumis is in his second run with the company and has wrestled just four matches in 2025.

The Street Profits’ second reign with the WWE Tag titles ends at 207 days.

Also announced, R-Truth and Aleister Black will settle their differences in the ring on next week’s episode. Truth interjected in Black’s business on the June 20 SmackDown by taking out Black’s scheduled opponent Kit Wilson before the bell. Black retaliated on the June 27 episode by attacking Truth in the ring.

The Friday, July 11 SmackDown is also the go-home show for both Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12, plus the all-women’s WWE Evolution PLE on Sunday, July 13.

New WWE Tag Team Championship number one contenders crowned

Motor City Machine Guns are the new number one contenders to the WWE Tag Team Championship.

MCMG (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) defeated DIY (Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa) in a number one contender’s match on Friday’s SmackDown to put themselves next in line for a shot at The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) and the WWE Tag Team Championship.

Dawkins and Ford were ringside for Friday’s number one contender’s bout, and the two teams engaged in a staredown after the contest.

The Street Profits defeated DIY for the WWE Tag titles on the March 14 SmackDown in Barcelona, while DIY defeated MCMG for the same belts on the December 6, 2024 SmackDown.

No date for the Street Profits vs. MCMG title bout has been announced to this point, with the bout possibly set for the SmackDown before WrestleMania 41 on April 18, or potentially earmarked for WrestleMania itself.

Friday’s SmackDown also featured multiple new additions to the WrestleMania card, plus the WWE debut of Rey Fenix. Our full report from Friday’s episode is available here.

WWE crowns new Tag Team Champions

The Street Profits are up.

Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins of The Street Profits became the new WWE Tag Team Champions on Friday’s SmackDown, kicking off their third main roster Tag title reign with the company.

Ford and Dawkins defeated DIY’s Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano in the main event of Friday’s SmackDown in Barcelona, Spain to capture their first championship gold in WWE since 2021.

Pretty Deadly are next in line to challenge for the Tag titles after winning a number one contender’s match on last week’s SmackDown.

The Profits now sit atop what might be the deepest division in WWE currently as Tag Team Champions on SmackDown, a roster than includes DIY, Pretty Deadly, Motor City Machine Guns, and Los Garza among the featured acts, with no one team being presented as having a dominant edge over any other.

Ford and Dawkins last held a Tag Team title in WWE in January 2021 when they dropped the titles then branded as the SmackDown Tag Team Championship to the team of Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode. Ziggler now wrestles primarily for TNA as Nic Nemeth, while Roode is now retired from the ring and working as a producer for WWE.

Pretty Deadly earn future WWE Tag Team title shot

Pretty Deadly are in line for a WWE Tag Team title shot.

Elton Prince and Kit Wilson of Pretty Deadly won a three-way number one contender’s match on Friday’s WWE SmackDown to earn a future shot at the Tag Team titles.

Pretty Deadly defeated Los Garza (Angel & Berto), and Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) in Friday’s match to become the top contenders.

They will go on to face the winners of the DIY vs. Street Profits Tag Team title bout set for next week’s SmackDown at a date yet to be announced.

Prince and Wilson are former two-time NXT Tag Team Champions, and also held the NXT UK Tag Team titles on one occasion.

Pretty Deadly joined the WWE main roster in May 2023 as part of that year’s WWE Draft, and have remained on the blue brand for their entire tenure to this point.

New WWE Tag Team Champions crowned on SmackDown

The Bloodline are the new WWE Tag Team Champions.

Jacob Fatu & Tama Tonga defeated DIY’s Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa in the main event of Friday’s SmackDown to capture the WWE Tag Team titles.

Fatu pinned Gargano after a moonsault and implant DDT to secure the victory for The Bloodline.

The title win is the first in the WWE careers of both Fatu & Tonga. Tonga Loa and Solo Sikoa both interfered in the title match to give DIY an out.

After the match, Fatu & Tonga presented Solo Sikoa with their title belts, and SmackDown went off the air with Sikoa posing with the gold.

In Friday’s opening segment, Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes agreed to make his title defense against Sikoa at tomorrow’s SummerSlam event a Bloodline Rules match, where anything goes.

New WWE Tag Team Champions crowned on SmackDown

DIY’s Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa are the new WWE Tag Team Champions.

DIY defeated A-Town Down Under’s Grayson Waller & Austin Theory on Friday’s WWE SmackDown in Toronto to win the Tag Team titles in the show’s televised main event.

The title win is the first on WWE’s main roster for the Gargano & Ciampa duo.

DIY commented on their win in a WWE digital media promo:

WWE’s chief content officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque noted in a social media post that DIY’s Tag title victory came in the same building where the duo captured NXT Tag Team gold against The Revival (FTR) at NXT TakeOver: Toronto in 2016:

Ciampa also held the NXT Championship on two occasions. Gargano is a former three-time NXT North American Champion, and also held the NXT Championship on one occasion.

Waller & Theory had held the Tag titles since WrestleMania 40, where they captured the gold in a ladder match where both sets of Tag titles that had made up the Undisputed Tag Team Championship were on the line.

A-Town Down Under won the SmackDown Tag titles in that bout, while The Miz & R-Truth won the Raw Tag titles. The belts were later renamed the WWE Tag Team titles and the World Tag Team titles.

WWE reveals new Tag Team titles, crowns number one contenders

WWE has renamed the SmackDown Tag Team titles, presented the champions with newly designed belts, and crowned new top contenders for the titles.

WWE CCO Paul “Triple H” Levesque & SmackDown GM Nick Aldis presented Tag Team Champions Austin Theory & Grayson Waller with new title belts on Friday’s SmackDown, with Triple H revealing that the former SmackDown Tag Team Championship will now be called the WWE Tag Team Championship.

In addition, new number one contenders were crowned for Theory & Waller’s titles, with The Street Profits winning a four-way elimination bout on SmackDown to put themselves next in line for A-Town Down Under.

Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins of The Street Profits defeated Angel Garza & Humberto Carrillo, Akam & Rezar, and Tyler Bate & Pete Dunne in the four-way to earn the next shot at Theory & Waller. No date has been set for the title match to this point.

Friday’s Tag title rebrand follows a similar change for the Raw Tag titles on this past Monday’s Raw episode, with those belts now known as the World Tag Team Championship.

All of the SmackDown titles (Undisputed WWE Universal, WWE Women’s, WWE Tag Team, WWE United States) carry WWE branding, while Raw’s titles carry the World branding (World Heavyweight, Women’s World, World Tag Team), with the exception of the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
