AEW Dynamite ratings up for Blood & Guts

Wednesday night’s Blood & Guts episode of AEW Dynamite averaged 953,000 viewers on TBS, up 15.5 percent from last week. It’s the best audience total for the show since March 22.

Dynamite drew a 0.34 rating in the 18-49 demo. That’s up 17.2 percent from last week and is the show’s highest rating in the key demo since February 22.

As compared to the same week in 2022, Dynamite was up 4.7 percent in overall audience and up 6.3 percent in 18-49. Last year’s Blood & Guts aired three weeks earlier on June 29 and averaged 1.023 million viewers and drew a 0.36 rating in 18-49, so this year’s edition was down 6.8 percent in overall viewers and down 5.6 percent in 18-49. Both declines are less than the overall drop in cable homes over the last year.

Listed below are the last 11 weeks of overall viewership and 18-49 demo ratings for Dynamite, as well as the 10-week averages in both categories. This week’s show was up 11 percent in overall viewers and up 13.3 percent in 18-49 as compared to the recent averages.

The Golden Elite win Blood & Guts match on AEW Dynamite

The Golden Elite claimed victory in the annual Blood & Guts match on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite in Boston.

The Golden Elite squad of The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson), Kenny Omega, Hangman Page, and the debuting Kota Ibushi defeated the Blackpool Combat Club side featuring Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta, Konosuke Takeshita, and PAC via submission when Yuta passed out while being choked with a chain by Page. It appeared at first that the call was a referee stoppage, but commentary pushed that Moxley submitted with Yuta unable to respond while being choked out.

The finish came after PAC and Takeshita walked out on the match, The Young Bucks kept Castagnoli at bay, and Moxley was handcuffed to the ring ropes. PAC walked out after a series of miscommunication spots with Castagnoli, while Takeshita bailed on the match at the behest of Don Callis as it became clear that The Golden Elite had the upper hand.

The wild brawl included Matt Jackson hitting a series of northern lights suplexes on Yuta on the top of the cage, glass, thumbtacks, a table, a chair, a bed of nails, as well as the aforementioned chain and handcuffs.

The Pinnacle (MJF, Wardlow, FTR & Shawn Spears) defeated The Inner Circle (Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, Jake Hager, Santana & Ortiz) in the first Blood & Guts match on the May 5, 2021 Dynamite.

In last year’s edition, Blackpool Combat Club (Moxley, Castagnoli & Yuta) and Eddie Kingston, Santana & Ortiz defeated The Jericho Appreciation Society (Jericho, Guevara, Hager, Daniel Garcia, Matt Menard & Angelo Parker) on the June 29, 2022 Dynamite.

We’re Live, Pal: Roman Reigns vs. Jey Uso, AEW Blood & Guts

It’s a brand new We’re Live, Pal! with myself and Andrew Zarian.

We opened up talking about last Friday’s WWE SmackDown at Madison Square Garden. Andrew was live at the show and talked about the vibe in the arena. We also talked about how the trial of Roman Reigns played for the New York crowd.

We then discussed last Saturday’s AEW Collision with CM Punk vs. Samoa Joe as the main event and FTR against Bullet Club Gold in a Tag Team title eliminator match.

Lastly, we previewed tonight’s AEW Dynamite and tried to predict who the mystery partners are for the Blood & Guts match next Wednesday.

AEW notes: Blood & Guts teams and mystery partner intrigue, 200th Dynamite

With AEW’s third-ever Blood & Guts match coming up in two weeks, the teams are starting to come together with two potentially high-profile exceptions.

On Wednesday’s Dynamite, the five-on-five double cage match had its first eight men confirmed as The Elite will have Kenny Omega, the Young Bucks, and Hangman Page on one side with the Blackpool Combat Club bringing Jon Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta and Konosuke Takeshita on the other.

That leaves one member per team remaining with the BCC’s Bryan Danielson on the shelf with a broken forearm and noted Castagnoli antagonist Eddie Kingston in Japan for the annual NJPW G1 tournament.

Following the taping for this Friday’s Rampage, Omega addressed the Edmonton crowd and said he would give a hint about their mystery partner. As he has said before, he recently took time off and didn’t stay home, but rather took a trip “not to Canada” to recruit an old friend. That friend cares about Omega, the people in the ring (the Bucks and Page), AEW, and about changing the face of professional wrestling.

Some fans were chanting for Omega’s former teammate and free agent Kota Ibushi which Omega didn’t attempt to downplay.

Ibushi’s deal with NJPW ended in January of this year and AEW head Tony Khan said that bringing Ibushi in would be “something to consider.”

Conversely, there was no hints given on Wednesday about who could join the BCC for the violent match which will be held at Boston’s TD Garden as part of the Wednesday, July 19th Dynamite.

On the same week AEW began to celebrate their 100th episode of Rampage coming up Friday, they also began their focus on next month’s 200th episode of Dynamite.

That show will take place on Wednesday, August 2nd at the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida. The company’s weekly flagship show first bowed on Wednesday, October 2, 2019, in Washington, DC.

Santana injured during AEW Blood & Guts match

Santana was injured during tonight’s Blood and Guts main event on Dynamite.

When it was Santana’s turn to enter the match, he quickly went after Daniel Garcia. Santana went for a uranage, but his leg positioned awkwardly upon landing and fell to the floor. He spent the rest of his time in the match near the cage, talking to referees. Towards the end of the match, he was taken out of the cage and helped to the back.

Santana’s team, which included Eddie Kingston, Claudio Castagnoli, Ortiz, and Wheeler Yuta, defeated the Jericho Appreciation Society after Castagnoli was given the win after submitting Matt Menard with the sharpshooter while Kingston had Jericho tapping out with the stretch plum. The two showed dissension after the match, but the show ended with everyone on the team minus Santana posing on top of the cage.

Prior to tonight’s Blood & Guts match, Santana’s last match was at Double or Nothing, where he, Kingston, Ortiz, and the Blackpool Combat Club lost to the Jericho Appreciation Society in an Anarchy in the Arena match.

Stipulation added to trios match at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door

A stipulation has been added to the Eddie Kingston, Wheeler Yuta & Shota Umino vs. Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara & Minoru Suzuki match at Forbidden Door.

It was revealed on AEW Rampage on Friday that the winning team will gain the man-advantage for their side in the Blood & Guts match on Dynamite.

Blood & Guts will follow similar rules to a traditional War Games match with two wrestlers starting and then further participants entering at staggered intervals. This year’s match will also see six wrestlers on each team.

The Jericho Appreciation Society team will consist of Jericho, Guevara, Jake Hager, Daniel Garcia, Angelo Parker and Matt Menard. They will face the team of Eddie Kingston, Santana, Ortiz, Jon Moxley, Wheeler Yuta, and the mystery wrestler that Bryan Danielson has selected to face Zack Sabre Jr. at Forbidden Door.

Danielson has been out of action since the Anarchy In The Arena match at Double or Nothing with an undisclosed injury. There’s no timetable for his return.

The Blood & Guts edition of Dynamite is set for AEW’s debut in Detroit, Michigan. As of now, no other matches have been announced.

Bryan Danielson to address Forbidden Door, Blood & Guts on AEW Dynamite

Bryan Danielson has been announced for Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite event.

Tony Khan announced that Danielson will appear to address the upcoming Forbidden Door pay-per-view, which takes place this Sunday, as well as Blood and Guts, which takes place on June 29.

Danielson has been out of action with an injury since Double or Nothing last month, when he, Jon Moxley, Eddie Kingston, Ortiz, and Santana lost to the Jericho Appreciation Society in an Anarchy in the Arena match. It was Danielson who passed out after a submission by Chris Jericho after Danielson and Kingston got into an argument.

Zack Sabre Jr. of New Japan Pro Wrestling has frequently been calling out Danielson, and did so again in backstage comments following Dominion. AEW announcers pushed on Friday the possibility of the match.

Here is the lineup so far for Wednesday’s Dynamite:

  • Hiroshi Tanahashi & Jon Moxley vs. Lance Archer & Chris Jericho
  • Will Ospreay & Aussie Open vs. Orange Cassidy & Roppongi Vice
  • Bryan Danielson to speak on Forbidden Door, Blood and Guts events
  • AEW All-Atlantic Championship qualifying match: Penta Oscuro vs. Malakai Black

Blood and Guts announced for June 29 edition of AEW Dynamite

The return of Blood and Guts is happening later this month.

AEW announced that a special edition of Dynamite, Blood and Guts, is set to take place on June 29 in Detroit, Michigan. This follows an angle during tonight’s Dynamite that saw Chris Jericho accept a Blood and Guts challenge on behalf of the Jericho Appreciation Society from William Regal and Eddie Kingston.

Jericho appeared during tonight’s show, highlighting himself and the Jericho Appreciation Society winning the Anarchy at the Arena match at Double or Nothing this past Sunday. Kingston arrived with Regal, with Regal dropping the term “blood and guts”.

Jericho initially rejected the challenge. However, after Ortiz ran into the ring and managed to snip off a lock of Jericho’s hair, Jericho accepted. Jericho, however, said he wanted something in return. He wanted a hair match against Ortiz that was later confirmed for AEW Road Rager on June 15 in St. Louis, Missouri.

After Jon Moxley defeated Daniel Garcia on tonight’s Dynamite, he said he wanted in the Blood and Guts match as well.

The first and so far only Blood and Guts match took place on the May 5, 2021 edition of Dynamite. In the match, The Pinnacle (MJF, Wardlow, Shawn Spears, and FTR) defeated The Inner Circle (Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, Jake Hager, Santana, and Ortiz).

AEW Blood & Guts match expected to return this summer

Blood & Guts — AEW’s version of a WarGames match — appears to be returning in just a few months.

AEW head Tony Khan revealed the news in an interview with ESPN Friday, saying to expect it to return this summer.

The original match was set for a March 2020 Dynamite as part of AEW’s Newark, New Jersey, debut, featuring The Elite vs. The Inner Circle. However that plan was scrapped due to the pandemic.

The match was then announced again for a May 2021 edition of Dynamite with The Inner Circle taking on The Pinnacle. MJF’s group picked up the win and Chris Jericho dislocated his elbow taking a fall off the cage he was criticized for.

However, when it comes to another AEW staple in Stadium Stampede, it appears that match will not be in the cards anytime soon.

Khan told ESPN that while he’s thought about it, running shows in the post-Daily’s Place pandemic era has changed his mindset on that specific match.

“It’s a very different wrestling world now than it was during the pandemic. I think it’s a great match, a signature match for us that people really enjoyed. But some of the reasons we presented that match were because of the challenges that existed in the world because of the pandemic, as far as presenting sporting events with live fans. That doesn’t really exist in this live-event pandemic,” he said.
