Column: Hangman Page should beat Will Ospreay at AEW Double or Nothing

Image: AEW

This is an opinion-based preview and reflects that of the author and not the website.

I can’t say it more clearly: Hangman Page should win at tonight’s AEW Double or Nothing and be the one to take out AEW World Champion Jon Moxley at July’s All In: Texas.

There. That’s it. You can stop reading now. (Actually, don’t just yet.)

Page takes on Will Ospreay Sunday to determine who wins the men’s Owen Hart Foundation tournament in one of the most coin-flippy major matches AEW has had in a long time. If Ospreay wins, I will not riot even if signs at the venue tell me to do so. But this is Page’s time and his promo this past Wednesday with Ospreay cemented it.

Did you know it’s been over 1000 days since Page was AEW World Champion? Do you even remember what his first and only reign was like?

I didn’t either, so I headed to Cagematch to refresh my memory. He defeated Kenny Omega for the gold at November 2021’s Full Gear and subsequently defended his title against Bryan Danielson twice, going the one-hour distance the first time and nearly 30 minutes the next time.

Then, things started getting a bit, well, random. He defended against Lance Archer for some reason in a Texas Death Match, a stipulation made also for some reason. He then feuded with and defended the title against Adam Cole at March 2022’s Revolution which I have zero recollection of. He then defended against Dante Martin, Cole again in, wait for it, a Texas Death Match on, wait for it, Rampage. He then lost the title to CM Punk at May 2022’s Double or Nothing and we remember everything around that situation – even if Punk doesn’t want to.

Of those successful defenses, only one was on pay-per-view. There were some tag matches along the way and the fun World title eliminator where he teamed with Dark Order. But the reign happened in one of those times when the AEW World title didn’t feel as special as it should have. Was it Page’s fault? No, but that guy isn’t the man we have now.

The modern day Page is brooding with some darkness and just enough light, most of which is off-camera with his family.

That whole “he drinks too much” storyline is behind him and he’s now an avenging ass-kicker who also can passionately talk about why he’s about to do what he plans to do. After an uneven feeling 2022-23, October 2023 kicked off his epic feud with Swerve Strickland where both men came out better than before.

He burned down a house while drinking whisky, put a hypodermic needle through Strickland’s face, had incredible facial reactions, and basically gave everything he had. Fans responded and refused to let him be a heel. They fell in love with him and for good reason: he’s a really f*cking good wrestler. The slot machine came up with three cowboy hats and everyone got their money’s worth.

None of this is to say Ospreay is undeserving of winning tonight.

I could write another 100 words about Ospreay, but I won’t. He’s great and we all know it, but Page is a Day One guy that has an extensive history with Moxley that started with the third-ever Dynamite. History and “remember when?” is something AEW can finally start to take advantage of with every year that passes, and they have it here in spades.

They can tell the story of the concussion Page suffered in his first shot at Moxley while he was World Champion, the Texas Death Match they survived, The Elite vs. the Blackpool Combat Club rivalry, and more. While Page vs. Moxley will never be Page vs. Strickland, it’s not a bad second place feud in his career that has (hopefully) much more to come.

Most importantly with all this, we all know there needs to be a change at the top.

The fourth Moxley title run has not felt good for many reasons, the least of which is that the belt hasn’t been seen on TV for the better part of eight months. The man that cracks the case and finally takes it out needs to represent everything fans are looking to get back and what they want as their champion going forward.

Ospreay could be that guy, but in my mind, everything Page has done since that underwhelming first run has brought him to this Sunday in Phoenix. It’s the right time to pull the trigger and it’s fitting a cowboy is the one to benefit as he heads off into the desert for another big shootout.

AEW & Other Wrestling

AEW confirms Anarchy in the Arena match for Double or Nothing

AEW has confirmed a major match for this year’s Double or Nothing.

After Swerve Strickland issued a challenge to Jon Moxley on Dynamite and Moxley accepted via video on Collision, AEW officially announced Anarchy in the Arena for the May 25 pay-per-view in Glendale, Arizona.

While the participants haven’t been officially confirmed, recent developments on AEW programming suggest that Moxley’s team could include Gabe Kidd (who interfered on his behalf last week on Dynamite), the Young Bucks, and Marina Shafir. Wheeler Yuta and Claudio Castagnoli of the Death Riders, or The Elite’s Kazuchika Okada, could also be involved. Strickland’s team could feature Kenny Omega, Samoa Joe, Powerhouse Hobbs, Willow Nightingale, or others as well.

This will be the sixth major team-based match to take place at a Double or Nothing event. The first two were Stadium Stampede matches held in 2020 and 2021. In the first, The Elite and Matt Hardy defeated The Inner Circle at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville. The following year, The Inner Circle defeated The Pinnacle at the same venue.

Three Anarchy in the Arena matches have followed. In 2022, the Jericho Appreciation Society defeated the Blackpool Combat Club. In 2023, the BCC defeated The Elite. And in 2024, The Elite defeated a team consisting of Bryan Danielson, Darby Allin, and FTR.

  • Stretcher match: Ricochet vs. Mark Briscoe
  • FTR vs. Nigel McGuiness & Daniel Garcia

Three matches officially added to AEW Double or Nothing

Three new matches are official for Double or Nothing.

During AEW Collision, it was confirmed that Nigel McGuiness will team with Daniel Garcia to take on FTR. On the most recent episode of Dynamite, Garcia told McGuiness he was going to go after FTR with or without him, but it would be an honor to fight by his side. Stokley Hathaway came out and distracted the duo long enough into getting sneak attacked from behind by FTR. Daddy Magic came out for the save with a crowbar.

On Collision, McGuiness announced he would team with Garcia at Double or Nothing.

It was also announced that Ricochet will face Mark Briscoe in a stretcher match. On Dynamite, Ricochet was about to lay out Zach Gowen with another spirit gun when Mark Briscoe came to the ring to make the save. In a segment that aired after Dynamite, Briscoe issued the challenge for a stretcher match, which was made official Saturday.

After both teams made it clear they wanted to go after the Hurt Syndicate, Cru and Sammy Guevara & Dustin Rhodes battled on Collision, with Guevara & Rhodes picking up the win to become the new number one contenders. It was soon announced the match would take place next Sunday.

Mark Briscoe challenges Ricochet to AEW Double or Nothing stretcher match

Mark Briscoe and Ricochet will continue their rivalry with a stipulation match at AEW Double or Nothing.

Following Dynamite this week, AEW uploaded a promo with Briscoe challenging Ricochet to face him in a stretcher match at the Sunday, May 25 pay-per-view. The match has not been officially announced yet with Ricochet still needing to respond to the challenge.

“Ricochet, you have been the perpetual thorn in my side, the proverbial chap of my ass for the better part of two months,” Briscoe said. “So it’s about time we ended this. I’m tired of looking at you, you bald-headed bully.”

On the Beach Break edition of Dynamite this week, Ricochet defeated Zach Gowen but was chased away by Briscoe when he tried to continue bullying Gowen after the match. Briscoe said he wants to send Ricochet to the hospital as revenge for what he did to Gowen.

Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona will be the venue for Double or Nothing. There is still one Dynamite episode and two Collisions remaining before the PPV.

Anarchy in the Arena AEW Double or Nothing challenge issued

Anarchy in the Arena appears to be set for AEW Double or Nothing.

A wild brawl broke out in the aftermath of the main event World title cage match on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, ending with Swerve Strickland challenging some configuration of the Death Riders, The Young Bucks, and Gabe Kidd to an Anarchy in the Arena match for Double or Nothing set for Sunday, May 25.

Swerve, Samoa Joe, Willow Nightingale, Kenny Omega, Powerhouse Hobbs, and Mike Bailey were all involved on the babyface side in the brawl on Dynamite Beach Break, with The Young Bucks, Kazuchika Okada, Gabe Kidd, Marina Shafir, Jon Moxley, Wheeler Yuta, and Claudio Castagnoli on the heel side.

No official announcement has been made by AEW as to which participants could be involved in Anarchy in the Arena.

If the match is made official, this will be the fourth consecutive Double or Nothing to feature an Anarchy in the Arena bout, with the match headlining the show in both 2023 and 2024.

Toni Storm vs. Mina Shirakawa Women’s title match set for AEW Double or Nothing

Mina Shirakawa has officially returned to AEW and already has a Women’s World title shot, taking place at this month’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view.

During Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, Shirakawa won a four-way title eliminator match by pinning reigning champion Toni Storm to earn the title opportunity. AZM and the returning Skye Blue were also in the bout.

The two frenemies have done battle for Storm’s title before, dating back to June 2024’s Forbidden Door when Shirakawa was still a member of the Stardom roster. Shirakawa was also part of the Storm/Mariah May storyline that took place over the last year.

Shirakawa departed Stardom this year to sign with AEW. She competed in a Ring of Honor match last month with Wednesday marking her first AEW bout since losing to then-champion May in December 2024.

Page pinned Fletcher with a Buckshot Lariat in the Dynamite main event in their semifinals matchup to advance to the tournament finals.

Hangman moves on and will face Will Ospreay at Double or Nothing in Glendale, Arizona, with the winner earning an AEW World title shot at All In Texas set for Saturday, July 12.

Ospreay defeated Kevin Knight in the quarterfinals, and Konosuke Takeshita in the semifinals to earn his Double or Nothing spot, while Page defeated Josh Alexander in the quarterfinals, and Fletcher in the semifinals to punch his ticket to Glendale.
