Garcia vs. Andretti announced for next week’s AEW Rampage

Action Andretti’s feud with the Jericho Appreciation Society will continue on next week’s AEW Rampage.

In a match announced during Friday’s Rampage show, Andretti will face Daniel Garcia of the JAS on the Friday, January 20 episode.

Andretti made his televised AEW debut at Dynamite’s Winter is Coming episode on December 14, scoring an upset win over JAS leader Chris Jericho. The storyline has since expanded to include Ricky Starks, who also defeated Jericho in a one-on-one match on the January 4 Dynamite.

After a promo segment on this week’s Dynamite, Starks vs. JAS’s Jake Hager was announced for the January 18 Dynamite, and now Garcia vs. Andretti is set for the January 20 Rampage show.

Next week’s Rampage will be taped Wednesday, January 18 in Fresno, California.

The announced lineup for next week’s Rampage:

AEW Rampage, Friday, January 20, 10 p.m. Eastern time on TNT —

  • Action Andretti vs. Daniel Garcia

Kenny Omega, Action Andretti part of 11-match AEW Dark lineup

This will be Omega’s fifth time ever on Dark and his first since a mixed tag team win with Riho over Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti on the 18th episode of the show in Cleveland, Ohio.

Omega will also be wrestling Wednesday on Dynamite as The Elite battle Death Triangle in match five of the best-of-seven series for the AEW Trios titles.

Following his upset win over Chris Jericho last Wednesday, newly-signed Action Andretti will take on Invictus Khash Tuesday while TBS Champion Jade Cargill will put a future title shot on the line against Dream Girl Ellie in an eliminator match.

AEW’s Chris Jericho decided on Action Andretti match, direction in October

Chris Jericho made the decision months ago that he was going to make Action Andretti a star.

Andretti scored a surprising upset victory over Jericho at AEW Winter is Coming on Wednesday. Shortly after the match, Andretti was announced as having signed with the promotion.

Our own Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that the decision for Andretti to defeat Jericho was made more than two months ago. Jericho saw Andretti wrestle QT Marshall on Dark (filmed October 7 and aired on October 11) and decided then that he was going to “make him a star.”

“Action Andretti had a match on one of the streaming shows against QT Marshall and Chris Jericho was watching the match and decided at that moment that this guy is going to be a star. So, he decided that he’s going to make him a star,” Meltzer said.

Jericho first had to get through his run as ROH Champion and feud with Claudio Castagnoli, however.

“This match on this date was not something where it was decided yesterday. This was weeks and weeks and weeks ago. The date was decided the day of the Action Andretti and QT match,” Meltzer continued.

Renee Paquette caught up with Andretti for his comments after the match.

“Renee, words cannot describe how I feel right now. I just went out there and beat, like you said, the former AEW World Heavyweight Champion and an eight-time world champion at that. I’m pretty new to this game but that’s pretty damn good for a rookie if you ask me. And if I can do that out there against a guy like Chris Jericho, well then Renee, I think there is no telling the rest of the things that I can do here in AEW.”

Action Andretti defeats Chris Jericho on Dynamite, signs AEW contract

Following his upset win over Chris Jericho on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite, Action Andretti is officially #AllElite after signing an AEW contract shortly afterward.

Andretti was thought to be simply fodder for Jericho who asked for a match Wednesday after losing his ROH World title to Claudio Castagnoli at Saturday’s ROH Final Battle.

Behind a increasingly interesting Garland, Texas, crowd, Andretti gave Jericho all he could handle in a competitive match, eventually getting the clean win after hitting a running shooting star press.

As seen in the tweet below, AEW is positioning the Andretti win as one of the biggest upsets in pro wrestling history with many on social media comparing it to the 1993 WWE Raw 1-2-3 Kid upset over Razor Ramon moment.

Shortly after the match, Tony Khan made Andretti’s signing official on Twitter with the graphic seen above.

The Philadelphia, PA, native had wrestled for AEW four times previously: twice in January and twice in October. After the last one, which was a loss to QT Marshall on Dark, they gave Andretti a backstage promo which is rare for an enhancement talent that loses.

Andretti’s career is still relatively young as he started in just 2019, mainly working Northeast U.S. indies including for GCW.
