Young Bucks AEW return update

It looks like The Young Bucks will be back on AEW television soon.

Matt & Nick Jackson have been off TV since dropping the AEW Tag Team titles to Private Party in October 2024, but Dave Meltzer reports that they were backstage at a recent Dynamite episode and plans for their return are in the works. When that return will be happening remains to be seen.

Meltzer wrote in the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter:

While they haven’t returned yet, missing several California dates already, The Young Bucks were backstage at the show in Oceanside, CA, and there are plans being worked on for a return although we don’t know when, but it’s not like they’re in that place where so many AEW talents to go disappear.

There was a storyline last October where The Young Bucks said they would be working from home amid all of the chaos that the Death Riders were causing in AEW. During their absence from AEW TV, Matt & Nick Jackson returned to NJPW for a couple of matches and had a brief IWGP Tag Team title reign.

The Hurt Syndicate (Bobby Lashley & Shelton Benjamin) are the current AEW Tag Team Champions after winning the belts from Private Party. Lashley & Benjamin have a title match set for AEW’s Revolution pay-per-view in Los Angeles this Sunday, defending against The Outrunners.

Matt Jackson and his wife Dana Massie have launched a travel show on YouTube called “Never Not Jet Lagged” with the first episode premiering today. It covers their recent trip to Osaka, Japan.

Matt Jackson says Young Bucks’ NJPW return ‘like remarrying an old spouse’

Matthew and Nicholas Jackson spoke to Justin Barrasso of Undisputed as they prepare to defend the IWGP World Tag Team Championships at New Beginning in Osaka.

The Young Bucks will face the team of Tetsuya Naito and Hiromu Takahashi on the February 11 card. It will be their first defense of the titles after winning them at NJPW Wrestle Dynasty in the Tokyo Dome last month.

Matt Jackson says returning to NJPW has helped them move past negative feelings that had lingered stemming from their departure in 2019 to start AEW.

“Leaving NJPW in 2019 was definitely bittersweet,” said Matt. “We were so appreciative of what they did for us, providing us a place to make money and a platform to express ourselves for so many years. But we knew it was time for something new, and we were excited for this brand-new project called AEW. Personally, I was a bit hurt at the time because I had seen some of the other guys who were leaving get a moment to say a proper goodbye to the fans. We didn’t get that, and I was a little bummed, so it caused me to have some feelings for a couple of years.”

“In retrospect, I look back and think they might’ve looked at our new project as a possible threat. And from a business standpoint, there was some hesitancy for them to jump right in with us like we hoped. Looking back now, I can’t blame them. We were this new, unproven thing, making a bunch of promises and it probably spooked them. Now, all these years later, I’ve learned never to take anything in this business personally again.”

The Bucks defeated The Great-O-Khan & Jeff Cobb and Takahashi & Naito in a three way match at Wrestle Dynasty. Nick Jackson says he didn’t think he’d ever get to wrestle in The Tokyo Dome again.

“I honestly didn’t think it would ever happen again,” said Nick. “I also knew my family was smiling ear to ear. It was just a great moment for us.

“Our run in NJPW, as well as Ring of Honor, made us into the wrestlers we are, so going back for the first time felt like home. Felt great to be honest, a full circle moment for us. I’m grateful we got to go back and perform at the Dome quite possibly for the last time. Who knows? But it felt great.”

Matt Jackson continued to say of the Bucks’ return to Japan:

“It sounds silly, but it certainly feels like remarrying an old spouse that you had once divorced. Once we returned, I saw how easy it was to fall back in love. ‘Ah. This is why I used to spend six-eight months a year of my life here. That’s right!’ Now that we’ve gotten to sort of make things right, I only look back at every memory from Japan fondly. It’s really like a second home.”

The Bucks’ full interview is available here.

Young Bucks: Creative changed ‘4-5 different times’ before dropping AEW tag titles

Before ultimately dropping the titles to Private Party, plans for The Young Bucks’ most recent AEW Tag Team Championship reign changed a few different times.

Matt & Nick Jackson’s third reign with the belts ended when they lost to Private Party (Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen) on the October 30 episode of Dynamite. While appearing on the Tunnel Talk podcast, Nick Jackson said he and his brother were originally supposed to lose the titles to a different team months before that. The creative direction changed 4-5 times before The Young Bucks faced Private Party at WrestleDream. After that, it was clear to everyone that Kassidy & Quen should be the next champions.

Both Young Bucks said they’re happy things worked out the way they did because Private Party are deserving of the spotlight and were ready for a big push. Private Party have been with AEW since 2019, and this is their first title reign in the promotion.

“This last run we just had, we were supposed to drop those titles months and months before we actually dropped them, but creative changed I would say 4-5 different times in the last like six months,” Nick said. “At one point, we were going to lose the belts to a certain team. And then a month later it changed to another team. And then, I remember Private Party came up to us actually and they mentioned about wanting to do like a long-term program with us. And we were like, ‘Well, sorry man, Tony [Khan] just gave us the layout of what we’re doing and that’s not in the cards.’

“And something changed and we ended up wrestling them in a match [at WrestleDream]… but we tore the house down. As soon as we got backstage, we knew, ‘Oh alright.’ It’s in Tony’s eyes. He was like, ‘I think we have something, I think we have something.’ And Matt and I thought the same exact thing. We were like, ‘We’ve got to pivot. We’ve got to change our plans again.’ And that was like the fourth time changing plans for those titles to be dropped. We were happy though because we wanted to put those guys over. They deserved the spotlight. It’s been five years now, so they were ready for a big push. And I’m just glad Matt and I got to give them that last shove before we left.”

There’s an angle where The Young Bucks have been away from AEW television since their loss to Private Party, but Matt & Nick are expected to feud with Jon Moxley’s Death Riders faction once they return.

For the first time since 2019, The Young Bucks will wrestle for NJPW when they compete for the vacant IWGP Tag Team titles at Wrestle Dynasty on January 5.

NJPW to crown new IWGP Tag Team Champions at Wrestle Dynasty

NJPW has revealed its plan to crown new IWGP Tag Team Champions.

Great-O-Khan & HENARE were scheduled to defend the titles against The Young Bucks at Wrestle Dynasty, but the belts have officially been declared vacant after HENARE sustained a knee injury. Now, it will be O-Khan and a partner of his choosing facing The Young Bucks at the January 5 event to determine new champions.

The injury to HENARE happened near the end of World Tag League. He and O-Khan were still in contention to win B Block at the time but had to withdraw from the tournament.

Tetsuya Naito & Hiromu Takahashi went on to win World Tag League. While the winners usually get an IWGP Tag Team title shot, Naito & Hiromu are not sure if they’ll ever challenge for the titles.

Wrestle Dynasty is set to include talent from NJPW, AEW, Stardom, CMLL, and ROH. It will be the first time The Young Bucks have wrestled in Japan since 2019.

NJPW has also confirmed that the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship and IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship will be on the line at Wrestle Dynasty. Zack Sabre Jr. and David Finlay are the current champions but have title defenses at Wrestle Kingdom 19, which is taking place from the Tokyo Dome one day before Wrestle Dynasty.

Here’s the updated Wrestle Dynasty card:

Wrestle Dynasty (Sunday, January 5 airing live on NJPW World) —

  • Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Ricochet (will be an IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match if Sabre retains against Shota Umino at Wrestle Kingdom)
  • Shota Umino vs. Claudio Castagnoli (will be an IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match if Umino wins the title at Wrestle Kingdom)
  • David Finlay vs. Brody King (will be an IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship match if Finlay retains against Yota Tsuji at Wrestle Kingdom)
  • Yota Tsuji vs. Jack Perry (will be an IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship match if Tsuji wins the title at Wrestle Kingdom)
  • Kenny Omega vs. Gabe Kidd
  • Great-O-Khan & TBD vs. The Young Bucks for the vacant IWGP Tag Team titles
  • International Women’s Cup four-way match (winner receives a title shot in the promotion of their choosing)
  • Tomohiro Ishii challenges either Shingo Takagi or Konosuke Takeshita for the NEVER Openweight Championship (AEW International Championship will also be on the line if Takeshita still holds the title when he faces Takagi at Wrestle Kingdom)

    • If you had told me that in 2012 that 12 years later CM Punk would be a far more fascinating character than he is now at the height of his rebellious status, I’d say that’s just not in the cards for him. And yet I look at what he did with [Drew] McIntyre and realize that he’s so much more interesting now. He has a deeper connection with the audience now, which I never imagined would have been possible.
    • You realize that rebels age out and once they do, they can no longer be the embodiment of the disruption that progresses against the establishment. And yet he is now the older rebel with a little more wisdom behind him and a little more tact involved and he’s that much more compelling version of a character and persona — let alone his ability to portray it — than ever before.

    • I don’t care what your politics are. You’re wrong, but I still love you. And I’m going to say hello and I’m going to give you a hug whether you want it or not when I see you. I think people – if they would adopt that a little bit more and not get so much vitriol and so much hate over politics. It’s just ridiculous.

  • Eric Bischoff spoke to TV Insider about his role overseeing MLW’s One-Shot event in New York City on Thursday, December 5:
    • As far as creativity and my fingerprints on the show, I’m thinking more of the production than storylines. Let’s be real, I’m not fluent in the backstory and talent and everything that has been going on in MLW. That will become important and clearly, Court [Bauer] and his team have a handle on that. What I want to do is whatever stories they have in place already, I’m focused on telling that story. What could I do from a production standpoint? For example, the way we treat the backstage interviews or the way we thread the story throughout the show. The way we build anticipation for the main event. Whatever is fundamental in professional wrestling but often times overlooked. Everyone is focused on the finish, the big spot in the match or the in-ring promo. All things that deserve attention, but in the process on focusing on the big things, producers have a tendency to lose sight of the little things that make the show flow and creates emotion and hold viewers’ interest, and surprise them.
  • Bischoff addressed whether he could see himself working for MLW if the show goes well:
    • It’s a good question and fair question, but I’m trying not to think about it because I just want to see how much fun I have. It’s not just me having fun. If Court and his team don’t enjoy it, just slug through it. I don’t want to do that. Or I feel that way, I don’t. The door is open certainly. I got bills. I got a life. I get bored in the middle of nowhere Wyoming occasionally and like to throw myself into something to put pressure on myself with something that challenges me.
    • It’s not a test. My only expectation is to have a great time and make sure the audience has fun. Make sure the talent I work with walks away with maybe saying, ‘I’ve heard all these terrible things about him. He is not such a bad guy.’ Better yet, maybe they say they learned something from this experience. That’s the fun of it. Directing talent and getting more out of them than they thought they could give that’s the home run. In addition to collaboration, that’s the part I miss.

The Young Bucks to challenge for IWGP Tag Team titles at Wrestle Dynasty

The Young Bucks are coming after tag team gold in their return to NJPW.

At Wrestle Dynasty on January 5, Matthew & Nicholas Jackson will wrestle in Japan for the first time in six years. It’s a collaborative show featuring wrestlers from NJPW, AEW, Stardom, CMLL, and ROH. We now have a better idea of what The Young Bucks will be doing at the event. NJPW shared a promo from Matthew & Nicholas on Tuesday stating that they want the IWGP Tag Team titles.

“There’s one thing that Matthew & Nicholas need to accomplish before we retire — and that’s get the IWGP Heavyweight [Tag Team] titles back around our waist one more time,” Nicholas said.

“Tokyo, your rich God-fearing uncles are coming back,” Matthew added. “See you soon.”

After the promo aired at today’s NJPW World Tag League show, Great-O-Khan & HENARE — the current IWGP Tag Team Champions — declared that they are ready to take on The Young Bucks.

Wrestle Kingdom 19 and Wrestle Dynasty are being held at the Tokyo Dome on back-to-back days on January 4 and 5. If O-Khan & HENARE don’t win World Tag League, the winning team will be in line for a shot at their titles.

The Young Bucks were one-time IWGP Tag Team Champions and seven-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions during their time competing for NJPW. In AEW, they are three-time tag champs — recently dropping the belts to Private Party. They have been taking some time off from AEW since that match with Nicholas recovering from a separated shoulder.

The in-ring return of Kenny Omega is among the matches that have been made official for Wrestle Dynasty with him set to face off against Gabe Kidd.

Young Bucks update following AEW Tag Team title loss

In the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer provided an update on The Young Bucks following their AEW Tag Team title loss.

The Young Bucks dropped the AEW Tag Team titles to Private Party on Fright Night Dynamite this Wednesday. Nick Jackson worked the match despite having a separated shoulder that’s been bothering him for weeks. Meltzer notes that The Young Bucks will be taking some time off from AEW programming before returning to feud with Jon Moxley’s faction, which has been wreaking havoc in AEW.

The Young Bucks did an angle after dropping the tag titles to Private Party where they were shredding papers and left to ‘work at home.’ The idea is that Moxley’s group has caused so much chaos that it’s unsafe and they don’t want to get involved, with the idea of eventually coming back and saving AEW. Nick has a separated shoulder and has been working on it for weeks. There is no set timetable for a return past it’ll be for a while, and they aren’t scheduled for the Full Gear show [on November 23]. It’ll be no longer than January since they are confirmed for the joint AEW & NJPW show at the Tokyo [Dome] on 1/5.

Nick & Matt Jackson had been AEW Tag Team Champions since April before losing the belts to Private Party. This is Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen’s first title reign in AEW.

The match on Wednesday had a stipulation where Private Party would have had to split up if they lost.

The Young Bucks returning to Japan for Wrestle Dynasty

The Young Bucks are returning to Japan.

On today’s NJPW King of Pro Wrestling event, a video aired featuring Matthew and Nicholas Jackson announcing they will be at Wrestle Dynasty on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at The Tokyo Dome.

“New Japan Pro Wrestling. Wrestle Dynasty,” Nicholas says in the video.

“The Young Bucks are coming back, baby,” added Matthew.

Aside from AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door shows, The Young Bucks haven’t wrestled for NJPW since Wrestle Kingdom 13 on January 4, 2019. AEW had been officially announced just days earlier.

Wrestle Dynasty takes place the night after Wrestle Kingdom and wrestlers from NJPW, AEW, CMLL, ROH, and Stardom are expected to take part.

During Kenny Omega’s recent trip to Japan, he told NJPW president Hiroshi Tanahashi that if he is medically cleared, he would love to perform on the show.

“If they cleared me tomorrow, I would be back in the ring,” Omega said. “There’s a lot I don’t know right now, but I’d absolutely love to be on a stage like Wrestle Dynasty.”

The Young Bucks post Shane McMahon airport photo: ‘Interesting flight today’

On their way home from AEW Grand Slam in New York City, The Young Bucks ran into an interesting name from the pro wrestling industry.

Matt & Nick Jackson posted a photo of themselves with Shane McMahon at the airport on Thursday morning, captioning it with “Interesting flight today.” The photo comes amid persisting rumors that McMahon could end up joining AEW. He met with Tony Khan this July to discuss possibilities for the future.

After that meeting with Khan, McMahon issued a statement saying they discussed “many things,” but mostly their shared love of the pro wrestling business and the rewards and challenges of working with family. McMahon called it a “great meeting.”

Khan said he “really enjoyed” talking with McMahon.

A chance meeting between McMahon and AEW star Mercedes Mone also happened at LaGuardia Airport in New York City in July.

At Dynamite Grand Slam last night, The Young Bucks retained their AEW Tag Team titles with a victory over Will Ospreay & Kyle Fletcher. The annual Grand Slam event is held at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens.

Matt Jackson: Will Ospreay is ‘clearly the best in-ring wrestler on the planet’

Matt Jackson of The Young Bucks believes Will Ospreay has “clearly” established himself as the best in-ring wrestler in the world right now.

The AEW Tag Team titles will be on the line when The Young Bucks defend against Ospreay & Kyle Fletcher on the Grand Slam edition of Dynamite tonight. To promote the match, Matt Jackson spoke with Undisputed and had high praise for their opponents.

“When we first met Will many years ago, we called him a wrestling prodigy. He was young and inexperienced but so far ahead of everybody else,” Jackson said. “And it all came so easy to him. We’d whisper to each other about how he was probably going to end up being the best wrestler in the world one day, but how we couldn’t let him know that because we didn’t want that to go to a young man’s developing brain. We didn’t want to feed his ego [laughs]. Now, all these years later, and he’s clearly the best in-ring wrestler on the planet. And I’m not sure it’s even close.”

Jackson compared working with Fletcher to facing Adam Cole or Kyle O’Reilly when they were younger.

“Fletcher is fantastic,” he said. “He is one to watch. He’s picked up the TV wrestling style so quickly and effortlessly. Wrestling him is intimidating in the same way it was when we first met and worked with a young, sharp Adam Cole or Kyle O’Reilly type. Like that feeling of, ‘We better have our working boots on tonight or this kid is going to lap us out there.’ So, it definitely keeps us on our toes and makes us stay young.”

Ospreay & Fletcher earned this title shot by winning a tag team Casino gauntlet match on Dynamite two weeks ago.

The Young Bucks have been champions since April and are on their third reign with the AEW Tag Team titles.

Kevin Owens discusses Cody Rhodes friendship, connecting him with Young Bucks

Kevin Owens is looking forward to sharing the ring with his friend Cody Rhodes at WWE Bash in Berlin.

Owens is set to challenge Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Bash in Berlin this Saturday. It’s the first-ever WWE PPV/PLE to take place from Germany. The show has a 1 p.m. Eastern start time airing live on Peacock/WWE Network.

In an interview with SHAK Wrestling, Owens looked ahead to Bash in Berlin and discussed his friendship with Rhodes.

“I mean, it’s just great to be able to experience that with my friend, you know? In any way. Anytime I get to wrestle a close friend on a big show, it’s great,” he said.

“Cody left [WWE] in 2016, and it sucked. It sucked to lose my friend at [that] time. So I really wanted him to have the best possible introduction to the independent scene, because he had never been around. He had never done that. At the time, he had already been in the WWE system for so long. The independent scene is a whole different ballgame from the WWE. So I just guided him in the right direction and put him in touch with The Young Bucks [who would] take care of him. And I knew they’d hit it off, you know? They did, I was right. And that just helped him get the right platform, I guess. Everything else, he did. He knew what he was capable of and he really wanted to show people — the promoters — what he already saw in himself. And he succeeded. That’s an understatement. So it’s great to see him get all his flowers, if you want to say that. And to see him in the position he’s in now.”

Owens connecting Rhodes with The Young Bucks helped shape modern wrestling history, leading to the creation of AEW and Rhodes eventually returning to WWE as a main event star.

Rhodes won the Undisputed WWE Championship from Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40. He’s made successful title defenses against AJ Styles, Logan Paul, and Solo Sikoa.

SHAK Wrestling’s full interview with Owens can be watched below:

Trios match added to AEW Dynamite lineup

AEW has made a new match announcement for tonight’s All In go-home episode of Dynamite.

FTR will team up with Darby Allin as they take on The Young Bucks & Jack Perry in trios action on Dynamite. The show is AEW’s Cardiff, Wales debut. It’s being taped at Utilita Arena this afternoon before airing on TBS tonight.

The trios bout will serve as a preview for two of the matches taking place at All In this Sunday. The Young Bucks are defending their AEW Tag Team titles against FTR and The Acclaimed in a three-way match at the pay-per-view, while Allin is challenging Perry for the TNT Championship in a Coffin Match.

Dynamite and Collision are both being taped in Cardiff today. The Collision episode will air on TNT this Saturday night, the eve of All In.

Here’s the updated Dynamite lineup:

AEW Dynamite (Wednesday, August 21) —

  • “Final Showdown” between Swerve Strickland and Bryan Danielson
  • AEW Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada defends against Claudio Castagnoli
  • AEW Women’s World Champion Toni Storm defends against Saraya
  • MJF & Will Ospreay face-to-face

Two title matches added to AEW All In

A three-way for the AEW Tag Team titles is now set for All In.

The main event of Saturday’s Collision saw FTR and The Acclaimed wrestle to a 30 minute time limit draw in a match that had been set to determine The Young Bucks’ opponents for August 25. As the two teams argued in the ring, both ended up fighting. Tony Schiavone announced on commentary that Tony Khan had officially made the Wembley Stadium match a three-way.

After being the number one contenders for the AEW Tag Team titles for weeks, The Acclaimed got their shot against The Young Bucks on Wednesday’s Dynamite. The finish of that match had Matthew Jackson attempting to use one of the titles as a weapon. FTR came out to prevent it, but ended up fighting The Young Bucks when Matthew spit in Dax Harwood’s face, causing the match to be thrown out.

Also announced is a London Ladders match for the AEW Trios titles. The Patriarchy (Christian Cage, Nick Wayne, and Killswitch) will face off against The House of Black, The Bang Bang Gang, and a third team yet to be determined. The final slot will be determined in a wildcard match that will take place on Collision next Saturday in Wales.

Here’s the current AEW All In card for Sunday, August 25 from London’s Wembley Stadium:

  • AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland defends against Bryan Danielson

  • FTW Champion Chris Jericho defends against Hook
  • Zero Hour: Willow Nightingale & Tomohiro Ishii vs. Kris Statlander & Stokely Hathaway, winners get to pick stipulation to Nightingale/Statlander CMLL Women’s title match for All Out

Young Bucks ‘couldn’t be prouder’ of versatility Okada has shown in AEW

The Young Bucks couldn’t be prouder of the work that Kazuchika Okada is doing in AEW.

After signing with the promotion, Okada arrived in AEW this March and was introduced as the newest member of The Elite. He was the top star in NJPW before making the decision to take on a new journey and come to the United States. Since then, Okada has shown his versatility in a new environment.

That includes Okada taking part in Blood & Guts on AEW Dynamite this past Wednesday. In an interview with Sports Illustrated after the match, The Young Bucks expressed how proud they are of Okada for stepping out of his comfort zone.

“Okada has come to AEW and completely stepped out of his comfort zone,” Matt Jackson said. “I couldn’t be prouder to see him trying new things and learning a new style. He’s a movie star with perfect timing, an unbelievable sense of humor, and he just so happens to be the greatest wrestler alive. I can tell you while he doesn’t exactly prefer being in these types of matches, he’s certainly having a damn good time. It would’ve been so easy to just come here and rely on the things he’s already known for. I’m so proud of him and his versatility.”

“Okada is the best,” Nick Jackson added. “He is performing so great and adapting to new matches he’s never been in as well as I’ve seen anyone be able to do it on the fly. It’s been so much fun working with him these last several months. There’s no one better.”

Team AEW (Swerve Strickland, Mark Briscoe, The Acclaimed & Darby Allin) defeated Team Elite (The Young Bucks, Okada, Jack Perry & Hangman Page) in Blood & Guts. The match is AEW’s version of WarGames.

Okada is the current AEW Continental Champion.
